Okay so as a random writing resource and also just a good way to find new books:
Are you writing a fantasy or historical fiction series that is set before the discovery/development of electricity?
Don't know what kinds of food your people are eating, or how they get it and prepare it?
Try looking up old cookbooks on Project Gutenberg!
I found this one, which is great not only for the descriptions of how to pick out food at the market and some of the ways shady merchants will try to sell you meat that's not fresh, it also gives some brief descriptions of how to make your food last once you've got it home, and is just a neat, cool resource from 1700s America before electricity.
You can read it on Project Gutenberg, where it can also be downloaded in various ebook formats since its Public Domain:
Or you can have fun with the original 228 year old book, complete with 228 year old english spelling, below:
Pretty much any kind of world building you're interested in, Project Gutenberg probably has an ancient book about it!

I was gifted an old church community cookbook from Oklahoma, because I just think old cookbooks are neat and like new recipes for baking.
A lot of these old cookbooks have little bible snippets & stuff sprinkled in, of course, but I didn’t expect…

a “where to consult” guide, for all your (sometimes very specific) woes.
Are you seeking the best investment? Planning your budget? “Wanting to live successfully with your fellowmen?” We have a verse for you!
Also, just… Sin (Other)

What does trying to DM your oshi fall under: “Tempted to do wrong”, “feel your faith is weak”, or “need forgiveness?”
…actually maybe it’s be “want a worshipful mood”, but only if you Nasty~

Behold, a rival! Calumet baking powder is coming for Clabber Girl. This booklet is not dated, but I'd peg it as 1930s, like the Clabber Girl booklet.

Drink coffee. Support the Internet Archive.
(NO - SERIOUSLY. We wouldn’t have those weird pics of retro food or kitschy vintage cakes respectively from the cookbooks and Wilton Yearbooks of yore. Support me either by signing the petition or buying my products on Zazzle. A portion of royalties earned will go to the IA.)

“the governments of the world have been twitching uncomfortably for years now as they realize how hard it is to control a populace who have real time access to all of the information about everything ever, on a tiny computer that lives in their pocket.”
“we built this brilliant beautiful thing out of plastic and wire, and it was deliberately and maliciously lobotomized by people that thought it gave the pack mules too much freedom. too much power.”
been thinking about these narcissist cookbook lyrics in light of the tiktok ban

I have a bunch of vintage cookbooks given to me by family members, and I've been testing them out. I've been documenting the recipes and results (mostly good, but there have been a couple flops) on an Instagram I made for this purpose.
and even tho this is a personal project of mine and it doesn't need people to be viewing it, the big reason I started up this account is to share these recipes. my grandmother that passed away earlier this year gave me the oldest cookbooks I have, the ones that are certainly out of print and impossible to find. my grandmother believed in sharing love via food, and there is no better way to honor her memory than to share recipes so that they don't disappear.
so. to see if I can get a bit of a bigger audience for my little pet project, to further my goal of spreading these recipes so they don't fade into obscurity, here is the link for the Instagram! if you like vintage recipes, classic Midwestern recipes, or even just want to see what the hell are in these old cookbooks, please, give me a follow there.
