Okay hello hi hello,

First off you're amazing and a gift to the world, I wish I had even half your talent. Your last piece blew my mind and I just HAD to ask,

How long have you been drawing/painting for? I imagine forever but I'm always curious how long it takes before artists reach these sorts of levels where it evolves into full-scale projects as opposed to smaller hobbyist crafts. There are so many beautiful art pieces on this platform as a whole and I'm constantly baffled by it all

Hi and thank you! That's a good question

So I've been drawing since I was born, but I've been drawing digitally for 8 years. I think in the very beginning most artists should just focus on having fun, you'll basically improve by default

after a while you will want to improve. It will be slow, but this is the stage where you'll recognize what you need work on

I'd say the turning point is when you've finally gotten far enough into your art journey without any sort of formal training (ie, a lot of artists dont learn the basics/fundamentals first, which is fine since most of us start as hobbyists) But I think learning them really did help me a lot. You start to think more about how light and shadow lays, depth, 3D objects, and more.

I highly recommend watching this video about levels of art, it's been really helpful and motivating to me throughout the years

This part is going to be long so you don't have to read it but I just wanna give my personal journey and how I got to now if anyone thinks it'll be helpful:

(2017) With digital art, I started off on ms paint and occasionally ibis paint x. Mostly using anime deviantart bases (EMBARRASSING), but after a while I developed my own style based on the people I was inspired by at the time, I was just happy to draw and didn't care much about improving at this time

(2019) The people you look up to artistically will naturally change over time (and thats okay), after a while I decided to switch to firealpaca, where I guess I got more invested on how light and shadows work, as well as making my characters look a bit more natural and develop my own style, your preference in aesthetic may also change over time which is noticeable here

(2021) Eventually, I began to lean more into semirealism (which isn't everyones preference and thats okay! realism shouldn't be the ultimate end goal of art) but I really enjoyed making stylized characters look 3D and in natural looking environments, since I felt it spoke to my own experiences, a lot of artists draw from real life experiences. I focused more on anatomy at this time as well as textures and environments, composition also became a big deal for me at this time, as well as wanting to use different colors

(2024) The change from LINEART to DIGITAL PAINTING in 2022 was the hardest for me once I switched to clip studio paint, it was basically like starting all over and I was so lost. I had a lot to figure out on my own but I knew it was a transition I had to make to draw the kind of art I wanted. But I began to study and take more things into consideration, I didn't like my art so I simply kept going "I can do better", learning from my previous mistakes and slowly making something I would be more satisfied with. At this point art felt more like "projects" then anything, because I wanted to make pieces that were of quality and had time and care put into each of them, sure it meant there was no longer much quantity. but hey that's what my smaller Cult of the Lamb lineart drawings are for!! 💙

I'm still growing and I definitely have a long way to go, but I am very proud of my progress this year, and I'll continue to grow until I'm satisfied (haha im stubborn) I also want to develop my secondary lineart style that I do when I'm not painting, since I feel that is important too

in short; time, practice, dedication, and passion are the most important, draw what you love above all else because it will be your drive to keep going, staying motivated was the most important for me

Got Clip studio paint for my birthday a couple of days ago. it took me a while to figure out but its fine as a drawing program even tough im a bit hesitant to switch from paint tool sai since I´ve used it for the past six years and i´m so used to it.love the fact that you can download brushes, i liked no longer having to draw the sparkles on my winx ocs by hand, its pretty neat.

anyways here´s Lumi with her charmix. idk know exactly how she would get it but it would probably have something to do with her realising that it´s okay to trust in the people around her not sure in what situation that would become relevant Lumi doesn´t have a habit of opening up that much she would have to have been under quite a bit of pressure to even admit that she needs help in the first place.

What’s the difference between an AMV, PMV, and MAP?

AMV = Animated Music Video, PMV = Picture Music Video, MAP = Multi Animator Project (aka has multiple ppl working on it, amv/pmvs typically only have 1 person who worked on it) Sometimes i dont rlly know whether to call my vids an AMV or PMV cause they’ll usually be some animated shots some more pmv shots lol (i think they’d technically be more accurately called an animatic ?) but i like calling mine AMVs if theres some kind of frame by frame animation in there as animatics tend to be just in the sketched out phase n my amvs are more finished with colour n stuff

2. How long have you been drawing?

I’ve loved to draw my whole life but I went properly insane when I was around 12. My childhood friends really remember that time bc it was like a switch flipped and all of a sudden all I cared was art and all I did was doodle all day every day. I was really annoying lol. Then I chilled out for a few years and came back worse at 15 when I started studying speed paints on youtube at half speed and watching Sycra like my life depended on it.  Then I found out animation is like an actual career you can pursue and I have not calmed down since. 

18. What are you currently trying to improve on? 

Speeed!!! I wanna get fast!! I’m also trying to be less of a perfectionist (thats also part of the speed thing) and actually finish things!! So far only really succeeding at finishing things but that okay I will take it!  Im also trying to get better at drawing characters interacting! I want my work to feel more alive! 

26.For digital artists: what program(s) do you use?  

for everything on this blog I’ve been using Photoshop bc thats what school got me used to but I also really like procreate and Clip Studio Paint (I just havent used them in a few years 😅) For work I use Adobe Animate/Flash and I hate it 🤡

The Long Way Home // Shawn Mendes - part 2

Part 1

I do grocery shopping early in the morning not wanting too many people to see me around the neighborhood. The nearby Walmart is basically empty and 6.30 am and the elderly cashier woman couldn’t give less fuck about who she is talking to. Once I’m back home I get changed and go for a quick run on the beach, just to have a look around and get my blood pumping for my first official day here. Running in the sand is making me work hard and by the time I finish my lap I can feel my thighs throbbing. I’m panting heavily as I reach my neighbor’s house and switch to walking. The deck is empty, all the blinds are drawn, no sign of her. My mind is still running about her familiarity, but I still haven’t figured out who she is and how I might now her. I spend the rest of the day in the studio room shutting the world out. It’s around eight when I come out of the house again, just in time for another sunset. I make a cup of tea and make myself comfortable on the ground, mentally noting to buy some furniture for the deck. I might as well leave them once I’m gone, but I could really use some seats out here.

The sun is halfway hidden behind the water when I see movements in the corner of my eyes. I turn to the right and see her again. She is wrapped into a grey blanket, her hair looks the same, kind of even messier than yesterday and this time she has a mug in her hands. She sits down on the steps and stares blankly into the distance, just like yesterday.

She probably didn’t notice me and I debate if I should go over again or not. I really want to find out why she looks so familiar and if maybe I knew her name it would finally click. So I decide to go for it again.

Luckily she is kind of zoned out and doesn’t notice me until I almost reach her deck. She jumps a little when she sees me walking towards her, almost spilling her drink. She stands up, but I speak up before she could escape again.

“Hey! Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you,” I say with a warm smile, trying to look as friendly as possible. She doesn’t answer, just stares at me intensely as I finally reach her deck. “I just wanted to introduce myself. I’ll be spending the summer here. I’m Shawn.” I stop at the steps looking up at her, but her expressions doesn’t loosen up. I look into her green eyes and can’t not notice the dark circles under them that have me wondering what she does that keeps her up all night. She looks skinny, her hands are bony, fingers long without any color on the nails. She doesn’t look like the kind of girl who does hours long glams every day.

I feel like she is not going to say anything, but then she speaks up.

“Okay.”

That’s all she says and suddenly I feel extremely awkward. She doesn’t even want to say her name and I basically feel like she wants me out of her property, but I need to know her name at least.

“And you are…” I try, which clearly is pissing her off and doesn’t want to answer. “Look, I’m sorry if you don’t like famous people, but I swear I didn’t come here to get into trouble. I’m just trying to get away from the world for the summer. I swear I won’t cause any trouble around here.”

“You better not, because I don’t need the attention.”

Her reply is spicy, making it clear that she is not a fan of mine or anyone who is famous.

“Okay,” I chuckle awkwardly, feeling like I’ve definitely overstayed my non-existent welcome. “Can I at least get your name?”

“Look, I’m not trying to get friends around here, okay? We won’t go jogging together, watch the sunset or paint the view sitting on the deck. I’m here to be alone, so don’t count on having a buddy in your neighbor.”

I’m kind of speechless, her dry reply just hits me hard in the head and I don’t know what to say. For such a pretty girl she has a pretty sassy, kind of rude attitude.

“I was just asking for your name. No need to bite my head off,” I say, still not over her behavior.

“I’m Sloan. Thanks for coming over, but I have something to do now. Bye,” she snaps before turning around and walking into the house, shutting the door behind her.

I stand completely frozen for a couple of moments before I manage to move my legs and leave. I slowly walk back to my house and halfway I stop and glance back. I see the curtains move in one of the windows so I know she has been watching me and I just can’t really figure out where to put this conversation in my mind.

Sloan. She definitely doesn’t want to be good neighbors, I mean I wasn’t planning on making a new best friend, but we could have hung out a few times, I was hoping to have her watch over the house when I’ll be gone, but she definitely doesn’t want to stay in contact with me. And her name didn’t even help me figure out why she looks familiar, but seeing her up close just strengthened the feeling inside me.

  “You really didn’t go too overboard with this house,” Brian comments as he looks around in the living room and the kitchen.

“Why would I need more? It’s just me here.”

“I’m just saying, it’s a big change after the hotel suits and luxury apartments,” he shrugs plopping down to the couch, making himself comfortable. I grab two beers from the fridge and join him handing his drink. “Thanks.”

“I’m perfectly fine with it.”

“I know, you are going back to your roots, finding yourself and all the shit,” he mocks me rolling his eyes, but I know he is just joking, so I just shake my head laughing.

We stay silent as he continues observing his surroundings. The place is quite cozy, that’s one of the reasons why I like it. Every piece of furniture seems to be so different, but at the end it looks great together. It’s a nice mixture of vintage and modern that goes perfect with the view over the deck.

I catch Brian staring out the window and I know he is a sucker for a nice walk at the beach but would never admit he likes all these cliché stuff.

“Wanna go for a walk?” I ask and watch his eyes light up.

“Sure!”

With our cold beers in our hands we leave our shoes behind and take the beach barefoot. The wind is messing our hair up, but luckily it’s not cold.

“So, how is writing?” he casually asks.

I know everyone is worried, I would be too. A year ago I wrote two songs a day. Being on tour gave me so much inspiration, but soon my mind got blocked. I didn’t talk about it for a long time, everyone thought things are going well, but then I had nothing to present at the meetings, studio sessions became painful as I couldn’t get one song done in weeks. The team sat me down one day and I told them how I’ve been feeling. The past two years have been too suffocating, I was always on the road basically until I was so exhausted I couldn’t get out of bed. It’s not like I was forced, it was more like my own, inner motor pushing me. I felt like if I don’t do everything right now I might not be able to do it later.

Andrew cancelled half of my plans after that, I spent a week at home, just rewiring my mind and I realized this is what I need. I have to take a few steps back, spend some time alone and get everything in my mind straight and just think about everything that has happened.

“It’s fine. I started a song, but I’ve been here only for two days.”

“You sure being alone is doing good to you?”

“Yes, Brian. And tell this to Andrew as well. He is texting me every hour to check in on me. I’m not a baby,” I chuckle.

“I know! We are just worried about you.” He holds up his hands, clipping the beer between his thumb and pointing finger.

“Worry less, I’m doing fine.”

He stops and turns to me with a serious face and I know he is talking for real this time.

“We just don’t want to see you go where you were in 2018.”

“I won’t,” I reply right away. I promised myself I would never go there again.

“Alright, I trust you,” he smiles at me patting my shoulder before we start walking again. “Oh, you have a neighbor!” he points out nodding in the direction of the little blue house.

Sloan is out on the deck, she is wearing a huge, black hoodie with no pants, she is barefoot, as always and her hair is finally let down. It’s longer than I thought, almost reaches her waist.

“Yeah, she is not a fan of mine,” I scoff taking a sip from my beer. Brian is watching her, he is squinting his eyes as he tries to take a better look at her as she throws a few towels over the railing of her deck.

“You talked to her?”

“Yes, and she made it clear she doesn’t want to be my friendly neighbor.”

“What’s her name?”

“Sloan.”

“Dude, no way!” His eyes widen as he glances at me and then back in her direction. When she is done with the last towel she walks back into the house.

“What?”

“You didn’t recognize her?” he gasps and I shake my head no. “That’s Sloan Westbury!”

“Who?” I ask as my mind is slowly putting the pieces together. The familiar face, the name…

“Shawn, she is Sloan Westbury, the Disney girl who went nuts last year.”

“Oh my God,” I whisper as realization hits me.

I know now, this is why she looked so familiar, I’ve seen her on TV so many times. Last year, when I was touring the press was all up in her ass. She had numerous scandals, wild parties and nude photoshoots, people were judging her every step right until she deleted all her social media profiles and just… disappeared.

“She was rude because she thought I would bring attention to her again,” I realize as I stare in her house’s direction.

It’s all clear now.

A: ooh uh i learned to draw cats from watching tennelleflowers and i got a lot of good tips from lavendertowne. if they mean like IDEAS, my one original story thing i have was something i made up in second grade and have been developing since then

stolas and blitzo. stolas is just really weird and blitzo doesnt translate well into other art styles. i can do stolas pretty okay but FOR FUCKS SAKE WHY IS BLITZOS HEAD SO LONG-

A: okay uhhh thats hard because i draw a lot of things that are jokes and i share with friends, so like if we include the memes i share with friends as kept to myself than i post like 80% of it

A: im honestly not sure but i did notice since i started watching more anime i did start doing the fucking. thin necks. i also finally got a doodle style like i see on tumblr a lot so that also i guess

A: uhh a handful of shows like gravity falls, steven universe, ect . i also love nintendo games but they dont do anything for me in terms of art most of the time, tho i am a huge fan of some zelda games cuz theyre pretty.

the first dream i remember like my grandparents on my dads side had a bigger house but it was still like that unfinished messy paint plaster crack all ovr the place and in the dream i wanted to to paint the upstairs so it looked nice and they wouldnt let me so i was like okay ill move then and they were all like gasp why and i was like cause i wanted to live in a cared for place so they let me paint it but the dream switched over to like a character i helped make had a long flat weapon that had been the back of a throne of the king of wands card it was like a knife or a sword i guess but it was long and flat like a spatrula with the symbols of the throne cut out instead of spatrula slots and the dream was brief the character just sorta toggled between those two things 

and then i dreamt about a huge park where my things had been all thrown about and left outside to get sunsoaked and weather damaged and i was like well im moving so i should gather all my things up but i saw a few broken crayons that lead up to someones house and i wasnt sure if they were mine or not but i gathered them up anyway and they were certaintly like the kids who lived in the house beyond the gate i went into the park more and the parent who looked like one of my dads ex came out with two kids and we talked while i was putting things from the park into a big tote bag i was explaining how the park belonged to my grandparents and they just threw stuff of mine about here and how i was leaving then the mom like shared some of the family dynamic in an overshare way and i was like ,okay, and then there was like a huge wall of art supplies that were fresh and new and some worn and old and i was like trying to find my stuff while being tempted to steal some of the new stuff and there were like a old proffessor looking guy and some Beefy jock type dudes talking to me while i was doing while i was trying to take stuff so i had to explain some of my art supplies were there and then the dream shifted to where i was a group of people who ran errans for like a king and got stuck in a life and death game and the part i rememember the most from this was that a false like person lead me out through the window to fall for like a fake ground and fall to my death but i jumped over it and to safety and the girl got made and lead a team mate to the fate she intended for me and as the remaining group progressed the point of view faded out to a television and i was a kid watching this then i dreamt i was animating a fan music video or a new one for the studio killers and jenny was there and i noticed she was upset but i didnt want to like push or couldnt? like i remember the feeling

then the dream switched quickly to me watching a woman in like 3d midrange poly like decent ps2 graphics look at a picture with another woman in it, a little scene played out and she opened it revealing a crawl space behind it, i could see from a low set of stairs and she put the picture back completely on the wall (they all were like on hinges) as a guy was yelled at her from and un see place that i later learned was the bathroom, and each thing worked out was like i had to watch her and try to talk to her the best i could before the man got out of the bath, then go back to the door at the end of the hall, then crawl through the vents on my side of the door and overhear the fight scene and watch the animation the picture had which was like? showing me what to do with the guy i think? it was black and white abstraction or like watching them might have gotten the woman to come out of the picture frame or enough energy to like get the other woman to come into the picture? the pictures were like highly stylized black and white (they looked kinda like one of my mom's own art) and each time it would get harder like the guy would come out sooner or the fighting would get more intense and come out into the living room and the very last round i had was instead of the woman going up to the painting in the hall it was the man who turned and saw me on the carpeted stairs of the living room going into their hall and i ran to the door and he like clip glided up the steps like his poly neck crained to the side so much it was clipping like it had broken and his mouth got all wide like an Intentionally Scary Creepypasta thing and as he got closer to the door like the skin texture got all poly vieny and red and his eyes got whited out and then he was naked, i managed to get on to the otherside of mine door which was like a Real door and i was a Real person and there was a thin blade coming through the space between where the door closes as he was trying to pry the door open from his end and i was pushing against it with all my Might and then after a while he gave up and then i went back through the vent to see if i could over hear the fight part and whole room was filled with polygon people while the guy was telling them about another world filled with people to eat and i saw the animation on the wall of the black and white woman serving a human head but it was all that weird animation and i knew she ate these people and i got noticed and was scrambling back as the woman in the pictures pulled themselves out so these black and white stylized animated woman reached out and stepd out and started to eat the polygon people while the woman in the first frame grabbed like wife and pulled her into the picture she was in and i got but up through the vent during the screaming chaos

and then the last dream i remember having before i woke up was i was at my grandparents on my dads side house and it was a time when all the family still got together on black friday for us to shop and i had gotten a bunch of red and plaid like stuff and was like at least w ith these terrible people i still got stuff unlike with my mom then i woke up

okay so i can give some info to the anon

so if youre looking for a free program on a computer i would recommend downloading firealpaca, its got a p simple interface and i actually used it for quite some time and idk dude its a pretty great program especially considering its free???

or alternately you can get like a pirated version of paint tool sai, its not too hard to come by haha i know plenty of people that got sai free that way. but yeah sai is a very good program and very commonly used for illustrations

i personally have used both but now ive switched to using clip studio paint (formerly called manga studio) and it is a fanastic program but it does cost money, i got it when it was on sale for $25 but usually its $50

and then theres also photoshop which a lot a of artist do use to draw and i dont own it but i have used it at school in the past and i def think its good program, but if im not mistaken you can no longer pay them in one go you have to do it like monthly?? and that goes for any adobe product (uuuh correct me if im wrong on that tho!! cuz once again i dont own photoshop) but thats also for the newer versions ive heard you can get photoshop cs2 for free??

but also you said app so idk if you meant for like an ipad maybe?

in which case i would strongly recommend procreate!! if im not mistaken it costs a few bucks on the app store (it has been years since i bought it tho i dont remember) but that was the first like good quality art app that i had, like when i got my ipad years ago that was what i was using for digital art cuz i didnt have an actual drawing tablet for my computer. and even now i see a lot of artists getting ipad pros and theyre either using procreate or the ipad version of clip studio

hi!! and um in short, both yes and no. yes I do draw occasionally but none of my drawings are digital. it’s really just me doing sketches with pen and paper and then scanning them onto the computer, after which I’ll clean up some lines in photoshop

mm if you’re looking for a tablet tho I hear the term “wacom tablet” go around a lot? what I’d suggest is to check out some art blogs and if it isn’t in their about or faq (bc sometimes artists will put that kind of information there so always check first !!!!!) then sending an ask to the artist will probably get you some info about different devices
