in fics where luke gets plopped into the prequels i want every jedi within ten metres of him to think hes the weirdest jedi theyve ever seen. he has negative lightsaber form. he doesnt know what a kata is. he handstands when he meditates. his solution to sith is to try and have a chat. hes a political radical who keeps suggesting revolution. you ask him what the jedi code is and he says "kindness and compassion and helping those in need :) ". you ask how he used the force like that and he says some shit about how you are a luminous being limited only by your mind. the councils authority is just a suggestion. he is somehow the new favourite of both qui gon and yoda

So.
When I saw this post, the first thing I thought was, "Did she really say that? When, where, why?"
Kamala Harris did say, "As Commander in Chief I will ensure that America always has the strongest and most lethal fighting force in the world." It was day 4 of the democratic convention; her remarks as prepared from PBS are here.
Still, it's important to look at where in her speech this comment falls. Here's the full section:
As Vice President, I have: confronted threats to our security, negotiated with foreign leaders, strengthened our alliances, and engaged with our brave troops overseas. As Commander-in-Chief, I will ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world. I will fulfill our sacred obligation to care for our troops and their families. And I will always honor, and never disparage, their service and their sacrifice. I will make sure that: We lead the world into the future on space and Artificial Intelligence. That America—not China—wins The competition for the 21st century. And that we strengthen—not abdicate—our global leadership. Trump, on the other hand, threatened to abandon NATO. He encouraged Putin to invade our allies. Said Russia could—quote—“do whatever the hell they want.” Five days before Russia attacked Ukraine, I met with President Zelensky to warn him about Russia’s plan to invade. I helped mobilize a global response—over 50 countries—to defend against Putin’s aggression. And as President, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies.
Notice how in the same breath as declaring, we will have the strongest and most lethal military, she commits to caring for soldiers and their families. That gives it a very different flavor, doesn't it? It implies, "with a more effective, lethal military, our troops will be safer." So—do you think that's true? A more lethal force may very well shorten conflicts. It may instead cause an arms race. But that's a different argument than "force is good for force's sake," or even, "there are terrorists out there and we need to get them." So it's worth looking at with some nuance.
She then begins talking about NATO and Ukraine. That's a new claim; "a stronger military will help us support Ukraine against Russia" and implicitly, "a stronger military will allow us to enforce peace in Europe, alongside NATO." Now, then you may ask: do we deserve that power? Are we responsible enough as Americans to influence world politics, especially through military force? Historically, we've actually sucked—see Vietnam war, anything we've ever done in South America, our current support of Israel (though Harris herself advocates for a ceasefire and self-determination for Palestine). But what of Ukraine? Was that intervention justified? And would that intervention have been improved by a larger, more effective military?
There's a lot more to talk about with this specific quote, especially social factors behind Harris and her identity—like the PR issue being a woman and being anti-military funding would be, considering the right may accuse her of being soft, too feminine, not violent enough—an unfortunate, but very real undertone. There's the "securing our border" undertone, since immigration has become a central issue to the election, and everyone's leaning right nowadays.
Claiming it's fascistic is a stretch. Where's the aggrandized past? Where's the discrimination and extermination that defines fascism? The censorship? The breakdown of surrounding institutions and checks and balances? The attacks against human rights?
Horrifying, that's easy to see—but "we need a strong military" propaganda isn't exclusive to fascists; everyone does it, from autocrats to communists. That's not necessarily a good thing, and it's genuinely worth questioning, why is our military budget so goddamn huge? Why is "lethal" desirable? But it's more complicated than either "military bad" or "military good."
So, if possible, please give Kamala Harris some wiggle room. I'd encourage you to read or listen to the rest of her speech. It's pretty good. Don't let one sentence alienate you from her.
Also, please vote, preferably for her.
"As Commander in Chief I will ensure that America always has the strongest and most lethal fighting force in the world."
- Kamala Harris
