I Can’t Pretend It’s Okay When It’s Not

spencer reid x fem!reader

When Penelope gushed about a local musician she absolutely adores playing at the cafe she visits frequently and forced the entirety of the BAU team to tag along, she forgot to mention what Spencer would deem the most important piece of information— her name.

At first, when they walked into the coffee shop already a couple songs in due to the team's later arrival (much to Penelope’s dismay), Spencer wasn’t completely aware of the angelic voice completing beautiful melodies. His main focus being on getting coffee into his system asap, while he was up at the counter, he tuned it out almost completely— again, almost. The moment he heard her speak was a completely different story.

“Um, so this is a new song…” the woman on the small five inch high stage started, “I actually wrote it a couple weeks ago after a very… difficult time in my life… a time I’m still actually going through, but I hope you guys have it in your heart to give it a listen with open minds. This is Death by a Thousand Cuts.”

Spencer slowly walked back over to the team, eyes wide and fixed on the woman he believes is the love of his life. The only problem being he has no right to call her his anymore.

Soft strumming of the guitar began, with low my’s being sung, and he heard a soft gasp come from his left. “Oh, this is gonna hurt,” Penelope said, one hand placed on her chest while the other hugged around her body.

“Saying goodbye is death by a thousand cuts

Flashbacks waking me up

I get drunk, but it's not enough

'Cause the morning comes and you're not my baby

I look through the windows of this love

Even though we boarded them up

Not even a minute in and Spencer feels as though he’s been stabbed through the heart. It’s difficult hearing it from her perspective. When he made the decision to end what they had, it was out of protection— it was so that she wouldn’t have to deal with the burdens of his job.

“I dress to kill my time

I take the long way home

I ask the traffic lights if it'll be all right

They say, "I don't know"

And what once was ours is no one's now

I see you everywhere

The only thing we share

Is this small town”

“You said it was a great love

One for the ages

But if the story's over

Why am I still writing pages?”

Spencer thinks back to their love story, back to when it began and the blissful moments, the rendezvous’, and the unasked questions about why they only ever had real dates inside and why no one on the team or anyone with any semblance of importance in Spencer’s life knew of them.

He thinks back to how happy she was, and how she was content with just being with him. How when her eyes lit up the first time he said he loved her, but also the dim the second he ended things.

He thinks about the nightmares he thought were over. How instead of Maeve being the victim it was now her. How if it wasn’t for those nightmares, the onslaught of “what-if’s” wouldn’t plague his mind. How if he had a less dangerous job, a job that didn’t take every ounce of life or happiness out of him, he would and could still be with her.

And as he thinks of these things, he suddenly becomes aware of the blazing eyes that had locked with his, and a tiny gasp is heard from the microphone before she starts playing with more vigor.

“My heart, my hips, my body, my love

Trying to find a part of me that you didn't touch

Gave up on me like I was a bad drug

Now I'm searching for signs in a haunted club

Our songs, our films, united we stand

Our country, guess it was a lawless land

Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand

It hurt. So much. And it was clear it wasn’t only him because each word she sang was aimed to puncture him. The tears brimming in her eyes were also evident. To anyone else, her words are curated from past

memories from someone who hurt her, but to Spencer, it was a message. A message that every single part of their relationship was taken into account while writing this song. A message that everything they’ve ever said or done had been tainted with the memory of him leaving her with no explanation.

“My time, my wine, my spirit, my trust

Trying to find a part of me you didn't take up

Gave you too much but it wasn't enough

But I'll be all right, it's just a thousand cuts”

He watches as she screws her eyes shut, and the sharpness of her words becomes duller as she sings on. He knew he fucked up the moment he walked out of her apartment the night he ended it, but he has never regretted it more than now. He misses her. He misses smiles, the laughter, the unconditional love that radiates from her. He would do anything to get that back.

He doesn’t realize he’s standing there, staring at her in awe mixed with sadness until applause is heard throughout the cafe and Penelope lets out a small “so sad and and beautiful,” while wiping under her eyes. He also doesn’t realize that after she announces a small break that he was walking up to her in a daze, the entire team behind him eyes wide with shock.

He also doesn't realize the first words he speaks to her are what they both longed to hear between the two for weeks.

“I miss you so much.”

She’s shocked to say the least. She’s completely speechless to the point where he begins to speak again due to the lack of words on her side.

“I’m an idiot— I’m, I’m so stupid. You’d think with an IQ of 187 I would be able to not make decisions like leaving the one woman I love the most in the world. Y/N, I swear I thought I was keeping you safe because with me and my job, that’s not always a guarantee, but listening to you and what you’re going through, I can’t— I know it wasn’t the right thing to do—”

“Spencer,” she finally cut him off, placing her hand on his arm and shifting her eyes to the people behind him who had been standing with him. “Later, okay? You can tell me everything later when we aren’t surrounded by a bunch of people.” The look in her eyes was genuine, but there was still hurt swimming in them. He wanted to say something, anything to ease it, but before he could open his mouth she grabbed the acoustic guitar and gave him a small smile. “And I miss you too,” she said before walking back up on the small platform and adjusting her mic.

While introducing her next song, Spencer slowly made his way back to the group who were going to ask the inevitable questions, but that didn’t stop the small smile from making its way to his lips, and he thought that maybe, just maybe, they won’t have to pretend to be okay anymore.

So yes, suguru: we have the academic rival trope for sure—with the “smart ass x dumb ass” thing going except we switch the tags every few few minutes<3 loook suguru def did not like me initially, and vice versa because I found him too stoic and he found me obnoxious BUT the mutual admiration? Yes. First off: they’re all really lovely designs, yes even Quaxly. Kudos to the artists! I’m in love with these beans!

Fuecoco: I’m a huge fan of 'mons that are creatures disguised as objects. Applin definitely comes to mind with this guy, and that’s my only complaint- why is the Fire-type 'mon based off an apple?

...actually hold on. hear me out here- doesn’t he look kinda like a chili pepper? That makes a lot more sense, I’d have to look up kinds of peppers but that might be the basis! Ok going off of that, he’s a Very Good Lad and I can’t wait to see the fiery alligator he evolves into :D

this post has been in my likes for a while and i kept meaning to reblog it but i was having a hard time finding the words to express what i wanted to say

anyway this letter has actually been making me tear up for weeks now bc like. ok. this is gonna take a sec to explain:

so ive been active in the ofmd fandom since like april 2022 and while the majority of the content on here is reblogs, i also have been pretty regularly posting original stuff since like june or july 2022, primarily metas and shitposts.

but i’m definitely not posting as much as i used to (i think fall 2022 was my most prolific posting period) bc my life circumstances have changed and i dont have as much free time and energy as i did a year ago. and this is a good thing for me! im very happy with how my life is going rn! but i do miss getting to dedicate more of my time to thinking and talking abt gay pirates.

more than that tho. i also consider myself a half decent writer and like a pretty mediocre artist (and i don’t say that to be self deprecating, i’m not insecure abt where my skills are at for things that are essentially silly hobbies. worrying too much abt quality takes the fun out of it for me). and i’ve posted like a handful of scribbley ofmd doodles and one chapter of an abandoned WIP that i dislike now and actually don’t want anyone to read.

and sometimes i feel kinda? guilty?? about that?? not so much abt not posting as much anymore, bc like i said, i’m busier these days and that’s a good thing. it’s more abt art and fic, especially fic bc i actually have been writing a lot of ofmd stuff it’s just all WIPs, like i have more ofmd WIP files on my google drive than i can count and absolutely none of it is worth sharing. i’ve been telling myself i’m gonna write all this ofmd fic and then i never finish anything and sometimes it feels like i’m… idk, not doing enough for the fandom??? i feel like i should be Contributing More. like it is my civic duty and i’m letting my siblings in fandom down. and no, i don’t know why i feel this way.

anyway i have always been a big fan of rambling in the tags but i often like, forget other ppl can see them (which has gotten me in trouble before lol). in my brain, talking in the tags is like talking out loud for my own benefit.

idk i’m getting really teary realizing someone actually noticed and appreciated me doing that, that even when i’m not making any content myself or not as much of the content i want to be making or i’m making less content than i used to, i’m still contributing to the fandom in some way by cheering on other creators who have more time and/or energy to create more than i do. like i said, i’m mostly talking in the tags for myself, but i’m so so glad that ppl appreciate my thoughts and i’m so glad it’s encouraging to other fans. there is a lot of talent and a lot of love in this fandom and even tho it’s uhhh Rough Sometimes im still really fuckin glad to be here with y’all <3

i love laika movies so i offer today a coraline au (you can watch the movie on youtube)

levi moves in with his mom and uncle (he’s a sassy child just like kuchel and sometimes he swears; he learned that from kenny). anyways, since he just moved he is grumpy; he misses his friends, farlan and isabel.

kenny is being more annoying and snappy than usual and his mom is tired and moody because she is so busy working and trying to tide the place up (and forcing kenny to help because he can be lazy)

so levi ventures into the forest and meets hange. he dislikes this weird child who will not shut up and keeps asking him questions 😩 because her grandparent forbid her from entering the house (because of the door). but hange insists on being friends and he has to agree. hange also owns a car named erwin. levi hates him lmao.

he discovers the door and then meets his other mother (hell yes scary kuchel 😩) and his other uncle as well as the other neighbors. his other mother pays a lot of attention to him (even if his real mother is just busy with work and doesn’t have time rn, levi is just a little boy)! by the way in the real world i think pixis and zackly would be great neighbors? idk why lol i think they would be a cool elderly couple that bickers constantly. and the eccentric neighbor that lives upstairs would be mr shadis hell yeah.

the second night he meets hange again, and he meets the other hange as well. his other mother tells him that she “fixed” her which is why hange won’t talk or be too excited. levi is at first happy with this but then it kind of makes him depressed? because the real hange is so happy loud and sweet, while the other hange seems quiet. they go to shadis’ circus that night together and they eat candy and just have a good time 😔✌️

third night levi had rough day and a heated argument with kenny; kuchel asks him if he would like tag along with them to go grocery shopping and levi ignored both of them which made his mom sad, so they leave without him. when levi goes through the door, he is greeted by the other hanji, because the other kuchel asked her to take levi to the theater 🥺 (which is zackly and pixis bc i said so). oh the two of them have fun, hange throws roses at him but at the end of the night hange looks so upset to leave him 😭 bc she feels terrible but can’t do anything because they are all being controlled by the beldam.

then the other mother tries to sew buttons into levi’s eyes but he gets into an argument and ends up trapped inside a mirror where he meets the ghosts of the dead children, including hange’s relative. and he promises to save them. then!! the other hanji saves him by sneaking in and pulling him out of the mirror 🥺 but her face is all stitched up by the beldam. levi unstitched hanges face. and then she got levi to the other door, but levi won’t leave her because the other mother will hurt her again 🥺 but the other han can’t go because she’s just a puppet created by the beldam. levi is pushed through the door so he can escape, but then finds out his family disappeared.

hange is there and levi is actually happy to see her ok, but won’t admit it. hange then talks about her grandparent’s twin’s disappearance. and she wants to go with levi but levi doesn’t want hange to get harmed (bc of the other hans) 😭 he goes to sleep that night alone in his mother’s room(i like the part where coraline uses the pillows to pretend her parents are still there) so he grabs kenny’s hat and makes a pillow kuchel 🥺💔 then he gets woken up by erwin (kitty erwin) who shows him his family was kidnapped by the other mother.

he asks the beldam to play a game with him, and she agrees. he finds the eyes of the children with the help of erwin, and a witch stone. he is heartbroken when he sees hanges clothes hanging as a way to make him angry. he then tricks the beldam and frees his family (they manage to seal her away in the process). at night, the ghost children thank him, and tell him to throw the key.

the beldam’s hand got to stay in the real world so she tries to take the key and levi with her to her world. except!!! hange is there! to rescue levi!! and they managed to destroy the hand (they almost died ahaha) and to throw the key down the well. oh and of course levi is happy that they are all safe 🥺 they had that picnic with the neighbors the next day 🤧

that’s the abbreviated version lmao i missed a lot. including erwins dialogue because the sass and how calculating he is, plus the eyes? oh and then levi warms up to him. they are both sassy lmaoooo. and i love their friendship tee bee h. plus the neighbors! and how shadis warns levi that he should be careful! and his mice and how he calls them cadets lol. and pixis and zackly bickering and telling him he’s in danger! and giving him the witch stone? and more of kuchel kenny and more hange 🥺 at this point i’m just rambling shdhdbcjfj bye

Iwa knows how to deal with Oikawa at his worst and vice versa. if you do end up showing preference to one over the other - say you cling to Iwa because he doesn’t go as hard on his punishments or Oikawa because a pissed off Iwa scares you they’re gonna notice, and there is nothing like a little exposure therapy to cure your fears.

So, I just read the Dear Old Friend Osamu drabble and I couldn't help but grin. The implications I got from it and the initial one-shot were the following;

1. Atsumu is a titties man, considering how much he bit and teased them in DOF.

2. 'Samu I don't have a favourite twin how dare you is an ass man considering how many words of that drabble were dedicated to his thoughts lingering on the titular dear old friend's arse.

And I'm just LIVING for it because they really do complete each other in that regard. I have a few ships, but the main one on my brain rn is Kae//Bedo! I do keep an open mind to ships though, as long as there's no inc//st or ped//ph//lia

That being said I LOVE anything platonic or familiar!! (I will cry happy tears talking about Kaeya and Diluc being brothers again you have no idea how much I hope they're able to reconcile-)

We support oc x canon here! While I'm no imagines blog and don't do any oc x canon myself, I'd be glad to talk about some headcanons with you!

Do note that a lot of the characters do not have canon ages! Because of this, I may consider a character you see as an adult a teenager and vice versa. That being said, I stay completely PG-13 here (Only I get special permission to say fuck more than once-), so hopefully that doesn't become a problem!

Please don’t call the child characters “Lolis” here! I know most people just call them that as a joke, but I just have bad memories associated with the word!

As in today (05/11/2020), I’m only in the gorillaz fandom and sloooowly making my way towards the homestuck one (I’m still like, at the very very start but I’ve already met Dave and the “Mayor of Can Town” guy).

I’ve noticed that a lot of the problems with gorillaz shippers is how they force you into believing the ship is real, but don’t worry: this blg is a NSFW free blog. I migth ramble about one or two fics I’m reading, but I’ll make sure to tag them with something like “stupid fic rambling” or a random exclamation noise, like “bleh”, so you can block that tag and enjoy a ship free blog.

Le 2doc: my situation with the ship is... eh. I don’t really get why so many people want 2doc shipper to jump off bridges, but i do get it when they go batshit crazy and do nasty fanart/fanfiction of uh... “unconsensual kissies”, if you will. It’s a really toxic part of the fandom, and that’s why I stay very very far from it. However, I do think that the ~vibes~ between them kinda click, not in the canon universe though. Idk, pretty boy with blue hair and nasty sex god are an interesting dynamic. But, as I said before, this blog is nasty content free!! So no murdoc for you!! hah, I’m kidding: there just wont be any weird 2doc nsfw and I actually don’t even talk that much about it, but there migth be some reblogs here and there sometimes (very few times, but still.)

Homestuck:

Havent got there yet but I got curious and checked the tag on ao3 and holy shit, more than 2.300 fics???? Wtf??

(also, by the amount of people I’ve seen talking about blocking the homestuck tag and pretending it never existed, I’m concerned.)
