It’s time for a new Swatch Chart! 🎨
I made the 1st version of this chart back in April, but thanks to some newly released sets, there are now 345 colors of Ohuhu’s Honolulu [brush-tip] markers! 😱 So an update was in order.
I don’t know why Ohuhu still doesn’t offer a truly full set with EVERY color, but this Chart is designed to help you keep track of which ones you have & which ones you don’t!
You can find the chart for free on my DeviantArt or My Ko-Fi Shop! [EDIT: These Links have been Updated with the Newest version of the Chart, which you can read more about in this post here.]
And if you'd like to send a little monetary support my way I do have the Ko-Fi listing set as "pay what you want.” Any monetary support is even more appreciated than usual since this was a more complicated chart than usual to make.✨
---------- ⭐️ Like My Art and Want to see more of it? Here's All My Links! ⭐️ ---------- Y'know Sparklers, I've made a LOT of Swatch Charts, but this is the most complicated one I've worked on to date by a fairly wide margin. Truly a "labor of love" as they call it. 🫠 By way of explanation: Earlier this year [in April], I made what was, at the time a full Swatch Chart of Ohuhu's Honolulu Markers. ["Honolulu" being Ohuhu's pet name for their alcohol-based markers with brush tips, as opposed to some other kinds of markers they sell.] This was necessary because while Ohuhu had [and still sells] a nice, big 216 set of the markers, that was still not every color available—There were [and still are] a few stragglers in smaller themed sets, and I wanted a place to keep track of all the colors I did own vs. the ones I didn't. Likewise, I modeled the Chart after the Copic company's own guide to the markers, which I've seen others make their own Copic "Tracker" Charts for and quite liked the layout of. Then, at the tail end of October, Ohuhu released a couple of new Pastel Honolulu sets, and just as we switched into November, they dropped a new 320 (!) Honolulu set—These combined added 106 new colors to their existing 242. [And for the record, if you filled out the previous version of this chart and don't want to swatch 242 markers again but still want to add the new colors, the .ZIP Download for that post has been updated with a new "Companion" Chart of just the 106 new colors.] So to be clear: While the 320 is the largest set of brush markers available from Ohuhu, it is STILL not the Complete selection of colors in one package! 😫 We are now up to 345 Colors Total + the Colorless Blender—if you count one color [GY163 Green Bice] that so far has only been released in an Old Skin Tone set Ohuhu no longer sells. If not, it's 344 + the blender, but I'm going to say 345 from here on out since it's technically correct whether you choose to count that oddball color or the blender as the 345th one. EDIT: As of 2/13/23, Ohuhu has made the "base" 320 Honolulu markers all available to buy as single markers on their website; The chart has been updated to reflect this. However, it should be noted that the 14/15 colors not in 320 set are not yet available as single markers. END EDIT Regardless, 340+ is a LOT of little boxes to try and fit on a single page. It's certainly not impossible since like I said, my original vision is similar to charts of Copic's full 358 [357 + blender] marker range, which still manage to fit on a single page and look like there's room left over. The thing is though that Ohuhu divides their markers up into more "Color Families" than Copic does, and the amount of colors in each family is very different...Not helped by the fact that Ohuhu doesn't have a set "system" for the Honolulu color codes [like RV180], so you have more than a few colors that really don't look like they belong in the family they've been assigned to, so that complicates splitting families up when the column of boxes gets too long. With that in mind, I will repeat something I said last time: "...[the] problem with any Swatch Chart over 50-70 or so colors (including my own): It gets difficult to have so many colors on the page while also still being useful, so I often have a "tracker" page like this, and then a multi-page set of charts that are a more comfortable size. The single tracker page gets filled in with solid color as I see fit, and then the multiple pages are gradients in some way, since that's what I find most useful. You can fill in the chart however you like, but I thought knowing how I handle mine might be helpful for anyone concerned about how small the boxes might print. Also worth noting: I know there's a lot of tiny text up here, and from an accessibility standpoint, I do apologize for that. I've done my best to balance legibility with functionality, but that's just the downside of squeezing so many swatches onto one page. The Copic charts I was taking notes from all have the same problem." To that end, to make room for the 106 new colors, I did still have to shrink certain elements and, as you can probably tell, really move things around. For example, last time the Greys got to be their own horizontal table, but this time they had to be squeezed into 2 columns. One small benefit of moving everything around is that now there should be a general "rainbow order" to the whole Chart—a color progression that feels more natural. It still won't be perfect once the chart is filled out because of the lack of logic I mentioned earlier in the numeric order Ohuhu puts the colors in, but the idea is still there. Let's see...I think the only other thing that's changed from last time that might not be as obvious is that there's a Color Family abbreviated as "MG." Last time, I dubbed this family "Muted Grey" because Ohuhu sorts them with the other greys on their own charts, but the actual color of the markers is far too blue for me to call them "Middle Greys." At the time, "Muted" was the only other adjective used to describe Grey that I could think of that made anything close to sense. This time, however, I wanted to see if I could come up with something that fit better. I landed on "Mineral Grey," since Minerals can come in a variety of colors, including blue. It's still not perfect, but it's the best I can do without knowing why Ohuhu decided they should be "MG" colors. 🤷♀️ And I know I probably sound a little harsh on Ohuhu by now, but I want to clarify my criticisms come from a genuine place—I love my Ohuhu markers and I'm thrilled they so far offer pretty great quality for much more affordable prices than the competition. I point these things out because I really think if Ohuhu were to take them to heart [which isn't impossible—they've shown they do actually listen to customer feedback even if it takes a while for the results to show], they'll be that much closer to surpassing their competition with a genuinely as-good-as if not an outright better product. I mean really, would I have spent the more-hours-than-I-bothered-to-count working on this chart if I genuinely didn't like the markers? I promise you, no, no I would not have. Sort of on that note, before I go, I will specify as I did last time that [as evidenced by this chart's existence] Ohuhu is one of few companies that updates their products fairly regularly. I'll continue to do my best to keep this chart up to date alongside the markers, but just try to be patient if I fall behind at some point—As long as I'm physically able, an update will come, but I'm only human and have other responsibilities outside of swatch charts, y'know? ----------

I bought the 320 set of Ohuhu markers (brush tip). I already had a few promarkers and some others.
Want to get used to markers and using them more. And also use it with colored pencils (i used it already when doing mostly colored pencil, but still need to do some where its mostly markers with a bot of pencils)

Hello sensei i request guidance
I have recently been reminded on my packet of ohuhu markers i bought a while back. Funny thing though,
I dont know how to use them (never used markers before let alone the alcohol ones or whatever the ones i got are)
Your use of markers is majestic, if i may ask, can you bestow upon me divine wisdom and show me where to start so i can learn please? Theres a lot of stuff online and its incapacitating me
Thank you for your time O great one!
*strokes fake beard* ah yes. my divine wisdom which i most certainly have and not my haphazard "winging it" XD
in all seriousness I'm really also still pretty new to markers;;;; So I wouldn't say I'm great at them yet ahdhhedjjd. I can only give a few points of advice:
1. Paper - I'd argue this is the most important part bc 70% of the art quality WILL be based on how well your paper takes ink. The papers I use are either Ohuhu's own marker sketchbook or watercolor/mixed media paper (about 200 gsm).
I would recommend the marker paper since it's actually specialized for markers and makes the color pop more. Watercolor paper also works, but it makes the colors look a lil duller. In my experience, it's blending markers on watercolor paper dries slower, which makes it easier to blend smoothly/with less streaks. I heard it also sucks up your marker ink more, but I haven't been using markers long enough to know.
2. Blending - There should be a colorless alcohol-only marker in ur set. You use that for blending (mostly). Lay down the colorless "ink" first, AND THEN draw over it with the colors you want to blend--while the alcohol is still wet ofc.
This is difficult to explain without visuals--but, I also tend to use the lighter/fainter colors as a "blending color" also. Blending colors in the same hue or are analogous is easier. Mostly. Meanwhile I had to fight for my life trying to blend orange with blue or even just a cooler gray without looking muddy.
3. Bleeding - THESE THINGS LOVE TO BLEED FR. On both marker paper and watercolor paper, I always have to compensate for how much the ink bleeds/feathers once it actually touches the paper, especially when you're using brush tip markers. I hate it ✨
Also if Ohuhu includes this plastic? film? thingy with their markers iirc. You put that on the back of the paper you're drawing on to catch any ink that bleeding through the page.
4. swatch your markers - imo markers are WAY more rigid in terms of color and blending. Yet frustatingly, they also can look very different when wet vs. when dry. SO! it helps alot to make swatches of your markers so you can get a consistent idea of what they'll actually look like.
5. Use colored pencils instead of markers for drawing details - After doing the broad colors with marker, I like to go back in with colored pencils to add detail and for some color correction. I can't do details in marker. I'm not powerful enough for that hfhrhehe
6. Ohuhu's marker caps DON'T match the color they are. It's dumb and another reason why you should make swatches fhhdjej
Aside from that I don't think I have much else. The rest of my knowledge comes from watching other artists' tutorials:
youtube
youtube
in summary: i have no idea what im doing 👍 hope this helps! ✨
#asks#silvershayde#i only have the ohuhu honolulu 120 set (i think) and the skin tone set#idek if its a general markee thing or just ohuhu but their color choices feel very limited for what i want to do#so i def recommend looking about what sets the colors come in and see what works best for you#i was going to put the dark-to-light rule here but I realize I don't really follow it

Happy HxH BigBang 2024, everyone!
I had the absolute pleasure of creating these two art pieces for the wonderful @clood's Leopika fanfiction - "right number" !
Art media and tools used: For Leorio's piece: -> Alcohol markers (Ohuhu Honolulu) -> Black ink pen (Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens) For Kurapika's piece: -> Watercolor paint (Royal Talens: Van Gogh - 24 half pans set) -> Watercolor paper (Van Beek - 300 g/m², 140 lb) -> Colored pencils, oil-based (Faber Castell Polychromos)
Keep reading if you're interested in detail photos and/ or if you're interested in me rambling about my thoughts and ideas while creating these pieces. :)
I may have gotten a little bit artsy with this project.
While thinking about what kind of general feeling I wanted to convey, I came up with this idea of making a sort of three-dimensional art piece, that you would look INTO.
I wanted the feeling to be like: 'These two people live in two different worlds - each in their own box'. As an outside viewer, you'd literally get a glimpse into their little worlds.
Going from that idea, I wanted to make them both contrast very strongly.
Leorio's piece, I wanted to make very moody: - dark, warm colors - strong shadows - pop-art style - alcohol markers as an art medium
Kurapika's piece, in contrast, I wanted to be very calm: - light, cool colors - soft art-style - translucent watercolor paints as a medium
The sweet @ayellowapple really encouraged me with my idea. Thank you so much, my friend! I appreciate it a lot ♥️
But also, I am SO relieved it all worked out.
A huge thank you to all participants for making this whole event so exciting and fun. As well as, of course, to the amazing mods @hxhbigbang24 who really keep putting their souls into the making of this!!
I am so happy I got to be part of everything! ♥️

I got some new alcohol markers for Christmas and felt like drawing my favorite Warframe #girlboss, Loid :)) I can't stop replaying that cunty tiktok audio in my head, send help.
In other news, Ohuhu's Honolulu markers kick ass. Absolute Copic killer, they are dead to me. Great quality for a fraction of the price, and their color range is HUGE!

Ohuhu Honolulu Flow Chart
After the recent discovery of Ohuhu's own attempt to put every Honolulu set on an "easy to understand" diagram, I finally took action on this idea I've had for a while now to make more of a flow-chart to try and accomplish the same thing.
Ohuhu tried their best, but the bottom portion of their diagram is super misleading. But then, to be fair, the whole reason I went with a flow-chart with text instead of an image-only diagram is because I'm not sure there is a way to do this that makes sense without all that extra text.
Link to view the chart Online instead of as a flat image. (It does not update in real-time so I'll have to do it manually, but whatever.) But the real benefit is that all of the sets listed on the chart should be clickable links when viewed this way so you can more easily double-check either what you have or what you're looking for. (I did leave a couple of links out on purpose—usually because just 1 link wouldn't cut it for some reason—but any that were left out accidentally, I promise I will 100% figure it out after posting this and add those as soon as possible.)
I tried to include all the necessary notes/information right there on the chart, but you're familiar with this sub and my comments, you'll know it's very possible some things aren't as clear as they could be, and that's why (as implied by the title) I'm posing this here and now—The only way for me to properly test if everything makes sense is for other people to actually attempt to use this chart!
At this point, I'm too familiar with the sets and the unique complications many of them have to be able to fairly judge if this makes sense to someone that hasn't spent hours investigating the sets and making spreadsheets! So it's up to you Sparklers to find holes in the logic or layout that didn't occur to me!
This flow chart was originally posted on Reddit and since been edited per Reddit comment suggestions before back-posting to Tumblr.

And yes, Luke's "blanket" is in fact Vader's cape. Love that trope!
Used Ohuhu Honolulu and Copic Sketch alcohol markers after outlining in black ink, plus Derwent Inktense blocks for the walls and floor. I like using alcohol markers, although the colors are more intense than I would prefer. Currently only have limited colors to work with, so I'm looking forward to getting some subtler shades and earth tones!
Am incredibly pleased with how the kids turned out, especially since I sketched them out late at night and without references. Turned out much better than expected.

Another Ohuhu vs Copic Post
I'm not the first to compare the two, and I won't be the last, but I have opinions and I love foisting them upon the void of the internet so here we are.
I have a mishmash of 16 copic grey tones and one pastel purple (BV11 Pale Violet), and the 96 Honolulu B Pastel set from Ohuhu, and even though I've only had these Ohuhus for a few hours, I can already tell you I have OPINIONS!
Let's get the obvious out of the way. The seventeen (17) copic markers I've acquired over the years cost more than the ninety six (96) set from Ohuhu. Lol. Lmao even. Everyone knows it, copics are Pricey and that's why everyones looking for an alternative. So yeah, I've been excited about ohuhu for a while! They're been a good competitor, even more so since they added brush tips and refillable markers! For real, while copics have been ridiculously priced, I've resigned myself to just buying a few here and there because it felt like a better investment in the long run. But now? I HAD TO KNOW! What are ohuhu markers like to USE?
Kind of nice, to be honest. They have next to NO smell, especially compared to the copics. Even my prismacolor markers are stinkier than the ohuhus. Love that. I'm not hotboxing myself out of my room every time I want to do a color. Amazing, no notes. Well, one note. I think the reason they aren't as stinky is because they aren't NEARLY as juicy as copics. Maybe it's the color set I got? I'd like to revisit this with a more bold color set to see, but the pastels feel almost Dry. So I wouldn't be surprised if the juiciness results in more stink. If that's the case, then yeah I'll go into the hot box.
The juiciness is probably also the reason ohuhu doesn't blend as easily. They still blend nicely, but the copics were SO smooth. Here's some blending I did with each set. The colors aren't compareable, because the copic colors I have go much darker than the ohuhu pastels, but the blending is the same.
Ignore the one on the top lol that's when I decided I needed More Colors and got the Ohuhus. The bottom cloud is the copics (the brights are prismacolor markers that are not part of this because they're about 20 years old at this point and not alcohol based anyway). It was my first attempt at blending, but it was easy to get a nice gradient! The hardest part was choosing colors and that's on me!
Here are ohuhu clouds! I noticed the paper had some texture so I did the little blob on the right to compare with the first cloud. It did blend a lot smoother on the smoother side of the paper, but I still had to use the darker copic marker to even the blend out. I don't mind that too much, to be honest, I think they work VERY well together! I did find myself needing to layer the ohuhus more, but I really do like the result.
THE NIBS! LETS TALK ABOUT THE NIBS! Copics big thing was always HEY WE HAVE REPLACEABLE NIBS! So when your nib inevitably gets Nasty, you don't have to buy an entire new marker. But now. Guess what ohuhu has done. REPLACEABLE. NIBS! Not only that, but most of the nibs are INTERCHANGEABLE! So if I decide I don't actually like that I got a brush/bullet combo and want the chisel, I can replace either with a chisel! HOW NEAT! I don't know if copic nibs are interchangeable, but they have always been replaceable.
Ohuhu has more different nibs and nib combos. They have brush/chisel, brush/bullet, chisel/bullet, something called a tri nib??/chisel, slim chisel/bullet, and wide tip. The tri tip is. So interesting to me. I'm not a chisel fan, if I want to cover a lot of space I can do that with a brush tip. But this tri chisel?? looks like you get more control over the line width. It's fascinating. I'd love to try it some day, but I don't think it fits the art I generally enjoy making. Like. I don't think I'd use it a lot. It's why I chose the Honolulu B, they have a brush and a bullet nib.
Copics have fewer choices, brush/chisel (sketch), brush/bullet (ciao), bullet/chisel (classic), and Wide. Biggest thing about these, though is that everything but the ciao are refillable. This is the other big draw to copics, especially considering ohuhu doesn't offer open stock. If your favorite color dries out, you'd have to buy a new set with that color in it. Ohuhu has started offering refills for some colors, and I can only hope that means they'll eventually offer refills for every color they offer. Both set of nibs are fine. Copics are a little more squishy, but I think that has to do with the juice once more. They aren't different enough to affect me in either direction.
Color choices are close enough, ohuhu honolulu series offers 363 colors, thier oahu has 320 colors, copic sketch offers 358 colors, all of which have refills. Ohuhu offers 50 colors on their website. Again, I really hope that since this is so new, it just means they'll offer more refill colors in the future. Still, a win for copics. I also love that copics allow you to buy empty BARRELS along with refills, which means you could theoretically make your own colors. Also, if you price it all out, in the long run, buying empty barrels and the ink refills and filling the markers yourself is cheaper than buying individual or sets of copic markers. I hate that. Lower your prices.
Overall, I like them both! Are copics better? Yeah, absolutely, I'm not denying that. But the price is SO outrageous and ohuhu is fighting for that affordability market. They're perfectly fine markers, and I WILL be buying some brighter more saturated colors. I will also be slowly (very slowly) buying copics too. They're so smooth, they really are the quality they're known for. If you want to try out alcohol markers and don't want a commitment, go for ohuhu. They have so many sets, and a wide price range, and still everything is so much more affordable than copics. It all comes down to that. If you want an investment and can drop a lot of money at once, then yeah absolutely go for copics. I am doing all I can not to say They're Worth It, because I hate that price I HATE IT! A single marker shouldn't be six dollars (and that's the Discount Price at Blicks). But I can't deny their quality. I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing, which is getting a large set of ohuhu and supplementing it with copics and hopefully one day copics will take over.
Did that help?
PS ohuhu caps clip on to the end of the barrel. Copics do not (unless you get the ciao).
#bookbird babbles#um. how do i tag this#my reviews#????#OHUHU VS COPIC#idk lol i had fun theyre both good markers#and i love seeing how far ohuhu has come!#i love that they're listening to their customers!!!!!#i havent used any other alcohol based markers and tbh i dont want to#ive done enough research to know ohuhu and copic are the leaders in quality#but like. if someone wants me to review another alcohol based marker i will#i do enjoy this lol#prismacolor markers were always my go to but again ive been using the same set my mom bought me in 200....5? 2004????#when was i in middle school#anyway those aren't alcohol based so they do NOT blend but theyre not SUPPOSED to blend#they do layer nicely though#i think prismacolor has gotten into the alcohol marker game since then but im out of their loop tbh#have been for a while#i think buying the pastel set did me dirty but i use pastel colors a lot more than brights so i thought it was best#and i DO like these colors dont get me wrong but to do a true 1:1 comparison with the copics i have#i shouldve gotten darker colors#but i didnt buy them to do a comparison i bought them bc i wanred to draw clouds lol#ANYWAY THIS WAS FUN WHAT NEXT
