🌞⊹ ˚ . 18+, men/minors dni ⁺ 𓈒 ꒰🧺꒱ 🌷 ・ mommy maximoff ✧
Natasha Romanoff was not a very sociable person, in fact, she was quite the opposite. Most people would be surprised to learn that the infamous ex assassin was admittedly somewhat of an introverted homebody, preferring the chosen silence of isolation over bustling crowds where judgment ran wild. For a woman with such a bold way about her, she was admittedly rather soft. She was soft in the way she moved around the kitchen when nobody was around to watch her frolic through cabinets on the balls of her feet, arches deep and perfect, and heels exquisitely raised above the floorboards. She was soft in the way she spoke, too. Her words were always calculated, always direct, and blunt enough to be chalked up to dry humor, but if you listened closely, if you closed your eyes and let the weight of her spoken sentence weigh on your heart in the way she’d never intended for anybody to actually do, you’d notice the soft hitch to her tone that was endearingly Russian, and the way her nose twitched whenever she wasn’t sure how a comment would be received by the masses. Natasha Romanoff was a lot of things, but an arrogant agent was not one of them; not that she’d ever admit that.
You supposed that she felt a crippling need to assert herself as if she were in a position of calculated authority. Some could say that she was in a stance of power, having been deemed not only a level six agent but also an Avenger by time she was twenty-nine, yet even with the moniker of being the only reformed Black Widow to escape Dreykov’s grasp, Natasha was never the authoritarian she prided herself on being when others were around. Granted, you were never one to challenge the way she raised her chin when she was at the center of a room full of men, and you were never one to comment on how her shoulders squared defensively whenever someone took a step to close for comfort. She radiated confidence and certainty, but beneath all of the hurt that she had turned into defensiveness, she was merely a woman that had been wronged and burned by every bridge she’d ever dared to build. You saw her as such, she knew that you did, so maybe that was why she never tried to act that way with you. It was an unspoken mutual understanding that all bets were off when fate brought you two together.
Natasha Romanoff played a lot of games. She liked the challenge of breaking down her opponent before they had the chance to break her down themselves, but the second anyone got too close she pulled a mask over her features and her bleeding heart became a loaded gun. You’d never met someone so guarded in your life, and yet she placed all cards face up on the table whenever she got you alone. Natasha Romanoff was not the sick and twisted woman she allowed the general public to believe she was. She woke up screaming from nightmares bi-weekly, the rasp in her gravely tone not natural but consequential. She closed her eyes whenever she washed her hands in fear of the clear water becoming red with the blood of her innocent victims. She stepped only on the tiles that she knew were silent, scared to make ripples in the water and alert attention. People who didn’t know Natasha Romanoff would say she was something similar to the atrocities that occurred beneath the midnight sky, but you would say she was the shadow of sweet flowers that disappeared after sunset.
You noticed every miniscule detail there was to know about Natasha Romanoff, but you know that she noticed every detail about you as well. She noticed the way you avoid going out in the rain when it’s cold, and how none of your socks ever seem to match even on missions. She noticed how you migrate down to the kitchen in the ungodly hours of the morning just to bake pastries for the team to eat at breakfast, usually cinnamon rolls or blueberry muffins with a crumb coating that Wanda particularly is a fan of, but eventually, she’d unraveled that your little habit wasn’t merely because you wanted to be hospitable toward the people you fought alongside with when extraterrestrial disasters fell to earth, but rather because your mind needed something to focus on when the nightmares of human travesties became too paralyzing and suffocating to handle alone in the dark. The first time her attention to detail became apart was a gloomy day in November, the leaves not all fallen from trees but the air frigid enough to belong in a barren January day. At that point, you’d fallen into a routine of going out for a run through central park each morning, always returning with not only a coffee for yourself, but one for her as well, but with the downpour of raindrops the size of nickels, you’d chosen the lower level gym as your route that day. Natasha wasn’t much a fan of the rain, but she never minded freezing temperatures. She found you in the debriefing room that early afternoon, her hair sodden and crimped from pallets of rain that fell overhead, but in her hands were two cuts of still steaming coffee from your favorite little cafe. She’d tried to say that she was just in the area, but you knew that she had gone out of her way to assure that at least part of your morning remained unchanged throughout the storm.
Your relationship with Natasha had been an unspoken arrangement for as many months and years as you could remember, but recently things had changed. You’d always found yourself alone in a room, two friends existing within the same space naturally, but lately even that hadn’t felt so innocently charged, and you were as much at fault as Natasha was. The Russian lingered in the kitchen just to watch as you mixed together batter for muffins that Tony would eat half of, but you hung around in the lower level gym just to hand off a water bottle when she completed her workout. Any excuse either of you could grasp onto just to spend a few uninterrupted minutes together had been abused and properly overused, but there was no admission of feelings anywhere close to the tip of your tongue.
There were some days that passed, even now years later, where when you looked at her beneath the kitchen lights, or against the punching bags, you only ever saw the broken woman that Clint had brought in from the KGB. She’d been merely a shell of herself at that time, fiery red hair matted with knots and the blood of her targets, face smeared with dirt and gunpowder. You hadn’t been on base when she’d been dragged in wearing heavy metal shackles and dehumanizing cuffs, but Maria had filled you in on everything prevalent regarding Fury’s newest asset. It had taken you three weeks to run into her when you returned, traumatized from the loss of your team and spiraling into shallow thoughts of death and finality, but from the very first moment youd never seen her as a threat, and she’d never seen you as the lucky survivor that walked away from a raid. Her eyes were soft, softer than the wings of a newly hatched butterfly, and when she stood beneath the sunlight on the deck of the helicarrier, accent thick and sweet like the spring breeze that carried pollen beneath its current, you’d seen the daintiest twinge of gold within the green of her eyes. Maybe it was at that moment that you’d known you wanted to spend your entire life at her side, or maybe that had come much later, but what you’d definitely realized in that first month of knowing her, was that she wasn’t as complete as she wanted everyone to assume she was. There was so much despair and longing beneath her mask of confidence and casualty, so many agonizing emotions that she’d never fully overcome. There were times where you wondered what could be missing from her life that even now, deemed a hero and residing amongst people that just wanted to do good by the world, but you always circled back to the heavy acknowledgement that aside from you and Clint, nobody truly knew Natasha Romanoff. She’d spent her entire life beneath the thumb of power hungry generals, and when she’d gotten a taste of freedom and self identification, she’d conformed to be the woman that everyone else wanted her to be.
Some days however, you saw someone entirely different beneath her eyes that still held specks of gold when the sun fell upon her the right way. You saw a woman that was confident albeit flawed, painfully witty although reserved enough to hide within the walls when she didn’t want to be seen fully. But sometimes when you looked at her, you saw a woman yearning to love in the fullest sense of the word, and that broke your heart the most. She had never been shown unconditional love, never been held softly yet tightly, never been allowed to love back. Natasha Romanoff had been taught that love was the greatest weakness any woman could surrender herself to, and yet she was finally at a point where she wanted to experience the tragedy of loving something temporary. Death was unavoidable, she’d learned that young, but love transpired through isolation even if it never felt entirely complete again. For the first time since you’d met Natasha, she wasn’t scared to submit herself to the experience of loving someone to a fault, even though it meant she could very well lose it all tomorrow. Even if it didn’t seem like it to others, you noticed the subtle ways that she made progress as the years progressed, and each time you looked at her and saw a willingness to explore emotions rather than suppress them, you wanted nothing more than to squeeze her tight and be the one to teach her how to love.
“Hi.” Your voice was soft, delicate as it filled the otherwise silent kitchen. You’d heard her sneak up behind you minutes ago, but only now did it feel like the right time to greet her. She was close, but too far, pressed against the island in the middle of the kitchen whilst you stood beside the sink, hands full of strawberries that Tony had asked you to turn into something delicious. You’d rolled your eyes at the billionaire who had made a habit of soliciting you for pastries, but here you found yourself in the kitchen anyways, trading hours of sleep for muffins that would be gone by the early afternoon. “Wanna help me?” You laid the freshly washed strawberries on a clean kitchen rag, falling into the process of patting them dry without much thought or intention. All of this came so naturally now; she came so naturally now.
“I, um, I could actually just go for a hug. If it’s not too much trouble for the busy, Chef.” Her voice was hoarse, scratchy and thick as it fell onto your ears. Without the running tap, you could hear the quiet hitch in her breathing, wheezing exhales falling out into the space between your warm and yearning bodies. Your eyebrows furrowed, hands abandoning the strawberries in an instance. In all the years that you had known Natasha Romanoff, in all the years that you had seen her in the aftermath of a nightmare, she had never asked for a hug. You could count on one hand the amount of times you’d ever hugged her, and they’d all been for your own selfish reasons. You spun around to face her, palms dragging across your pajama bottoms and riding the water that clung to your palms so you could embrace her fully.
You hadn’t spared her a single glance when she’d first entered, wanting to give her the chance and time to make herself known by her own judgment and comfortability, but now that your eyes traced the delicate shadows across her face, you could make out the unbridled tears brimming in her eyes. She was ghastly pale, a fitful sleep indicative by the deep bruising beneath her eyes. You’d never seen her so distressed, but for a single second you thought about how she’d chosen to seek you out instead of trailing down to the gym and bullying a punching bag like she’d gotten into the routine of doing.
“Can I touch you?” You asked carefully, not wanting to make any sudden movements and spook her back into her shell of isolation. This was progress, and selfishly you wanted any excuse to pull her in close and hold her tight. When she nodded, a weak and fragile incline of her head, you closed the gap between your bodies and melted into her chest. She held you protectively, like she’d needed to feel you to ensure that you were safe and real. A single hand reached up to cradle the back of your head, and her lips found a home on the crown of your head as she inhaled your scent deeply. “You know you can always ask for hugs. Not just because you had a nightmare, but whenever. I mean that.”
Natasha cleared her throat, though she simultaneously tightened her grip around your waist as if whatever she wanted to say would be enough to make you either run away or disappear entirely. You didn’t comment on it, letting her have the time she needed to get her thoughts in order. You grabbed onto her sleep shirt, tight fists bunching up the material and holding it possessively. Natasha felt the motions, felt the way the cotton shirt hugged her belly tighter now that most of the slack was taken up by your grip, and you smiled softly against her chest when you felt her breath out evenly. “Today’s the day we left Ohio.” She started, and immediately your head shot up to search her blue eyes. You’d heard little about Ohio, even littler about the little blonde haired sidekick Natasha found herself protecting for three years, but you knew that what had happened had ruined her. You knew that something as little as moving away was never as simple as it sounded for her. “It was spring break. I left without being able to tell anyone I wouldn’t be coming back. They- They ripped Yelena out of my arms. I– I will always come back for you. You’re the first place that has ever felt like home outside of Ohio. I just– I needed to tell you that I’ll always come back to you.”
“I will always come back for you.” You meant every word that you said, but you could see a cloud of disbelief hanging over Natasha’s gaze as she let your eyes meet again. There was something different about ehr now, something softer and smaller than you’d ever seen. It wasn’t unpleasant, but you couldn’t bear the thought of her so distraught, you especially couldn’t bear the thought of what she had looked like at only eleven. She’d been so young and the world had been so cruel, you just wanted her to know that she was loved, and she was cherished now. She wasn’t just another soldier anymore. “Nat, can I kiss you?”
She froze for a minute, arms slackening around your waist as she stared deep into your eyes, an onset of fresh tears threatening to fall from her own, but before you could withdraw your question, before you could backtrack and excuse your vulnerability as simply being exhaustion, she was pulling you impossibly close, settling both of her hands on your cheeks as she cupped your face and settled her forehead against yours. Her touch was familiar and foreign at the same time, a coming of age to all the daydreams you’d fallen into with her at the center of them all. You’d thought about this moment for months, thought about how her calloused palms would feel against every inch of your skin, her she was always cold but not uncomfortably so. Now, beneath the kitchen lights and her greenish-gold gaze, you realized that you’ve wanted her since the very first moment you met her. “I thought you’d never ask.” Her lips, still impressionable with sadness, curled upward into a smirk, but you didn’t waste a second to kiss it away and show her the truth about love and connection.
Natasha Romanoff had kissed more people then she could keep track of, but never had any of those intimate encounters come voluntarily. For so many years her life had been a means to the mission, but she was free now. Finally, she was entirely free. In so many ways, more than you could even contemplate, you were her first, and desperately you hoped that you would each be each other's last.

Are Peonies Poisonous to Cats? A Guide for Cat Owners
If you’re a cat owner with a love for gardening, you may be wondering if your favorite blooms are safe for your furry friend. Peonies (Scientific Name: Paeonis officinalis), with their lush petals and vibrant colors, are a popular choice for many gardens. However, it's essential to know whether these beautiful flowers pose a risk to your cats.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2c9e7d17960814a483f37a5c3c26133b/4e11476b7e60ee34-a2/s400x600/8e73b73d363eb5508c6a01703b61203cc300495c.jpg)
Understanding the Risks
Peonies are indeed toxic to cats. The primary culprit is a toxin called paeonol, which is found in the bark of the peony plant. While peonies are not considered highly toxic, ingestion can still lead to uncomfortable symptoms and potential health issues for your cat.
Signs of Peony Poisoning in Cats
Recognising signs of plant poisoning in cats is imperative for timely intervention. The key symptoms to look out for include:
Increased salivation
Vomiting and diarrhoea
Neurological signs like fitting
Respiratory distress
Subtle indicators might also appear, such as increased thirst or changes in behaviour. These signs require immediate attention, underscoring the seriousness of peonies' impact on feline health.
Symptoms of Peony Poisoning in Cats
If your cat ingests any part of a peony, they may exhibit the following symptoms:
Vomiting: One of the most common signs of plant toxicity, vomiting helps expel the ingested material from your cat's system.
Diarrhea: This can occur as the cat’s digestive system reacts to the toxin.
Lethargy: A lack of energy or unusual tiredness is a sign that your cat’s body is dealing with the toxin.
Drooling: Excessive salivation can be another indicator of plant poisoning.
What to Do if Your Cat Eats a Peony
If you suspect your cat has ingested a peony, it’s essential to act quickly:
Remove Access: Ensure your cat can’t eat any more of the plant.
Contact Your Veterinarian: Provide details about the ingestion and symptoms. They may recommend bringing your cat in for an examination or monitoring symptoms at home.
Follow Veterinary Advice: Your vet might suggest inducing vomiting or administering activated charcoal to prevent further absorption of the toxin. Do not attempt these treatments without professional guidance.
Preventing Peony Poisoning
The best way to protect your cat is to prevent access to peonies and other toxic plants:
Indoor Plants: Keep peonies out of your home or in areas your cat can’t reach.
Outdoor Gardens: Consider fencing off garden areas with peonies or using deterrents to keep your cat away.
Alternative Plants: Opt for cat-safe flowers and plants such as spider plants, Boston ferns, or African violets.
Cat-Safe Alternatives to Peonies
If you love the look of peonies but want to ensure your garden is cat-friendly, consider these safe alternatives:
Roses: With their variety of colors and similar lush appearance, roses are a beautiful and non-toxic option for your garden.
Sunflowers: These bright, cheerful flowers are safe for cats and add a splash of color to any garden.
Zinnias: Easy to grow and available in many colors, zinnias are another cat-safe option that can provide the visual appeal of peonies.
Paeonia officinalis, are commonly grown
Paeonia officinalis, commonly known as the common peony or garden peony, is not native to the United States. It originates from southern Europe and has been cultivated in gardens around the world. However, due to its popularity as an ornamental plant, it can be found growing in various states across the US where it has been planted in gardens and landscaped areas.
While Paeonia officinalis itself is more commonly found in cultivated settings rather than naturalized in the wild, peonies in general, including other species, can be found in many regions across the US. Some states where peonies, including Paeonia officinalis, are commonly grown include:
California
New York
Illinois
Ohio
Michigan
Pennsylvania
Massachusetts
Oregon
Washington
These states have suitable climates for growing peonies, particularly in gardens and cultivated landscapes. However, Paeonia officinalis does not typically grow wild in the US; its presence is mainly due to horticultural activities.
Conclusion
While peonies are a stunning addition to any garden, they pose a risk to our feline friends. By being aware of the symptoms of peony poisoning and taking steps to prevent exposure, you can enjoy a beautiful garden that’s safe for your cats. Always consult your veterinarian if you suspect your cat has ingested a toxic plant and consider cat-safe alternatives to keep your garden both beautiful and pet-friendly.

In order of appearance:
151. Canada Ginger (Asarum canadense) Not a ginger; the root just tastes like it. Flowers are springtime only and you miss them entirely if you don't get close to the ground!
152. Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis) Was able to get her by calling up one of the plant places I order from directly during the COVID years. Their usual boxsets weren't listed as available so I asked if they ever would be that year, as a repeat customer, and listed the plants of theirs that I'd like and they put it together for me! She's a morning flower only, but she's stunning.
153. Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia) One of my very first. Grassy green foliage and cute little light blue bell-shaped flowers.
154. Panicled Aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum) Well behaved for an aster. When she starts growing onto the sidewalk I ease her back into the bed and she stays.
155. Smallflower Columbine (Aquilegia brevistyla) You can eat these flowers too but she's not quite as profuse as her taller red cousin so I'll wait before trying one.
156. Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) Considered much more well-behaved behaved than her cousin the common milkweed, and therefore favoured in garden settings, I find she's not nearly as fragrant, but her flowers are stunning. In spite of her name she's quite drought tolerant. And while she doesn't spread by rhizome (well-behaved), she does seed prolifically. But like her common cousin, her young pods, young shoots, and flower clusters are edible cooked!
157. Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) She moves around. Died back in the area I initially planted her but has popped up in several places nearby and considerably further away. Her dried flowerheads still smell amazing after the winter if you give them a squeeze.
158. Wild Geranium (Geranium maculata) A beautiful plant from spring to fall. Her foliage is roundy in the early spring and then she has these wonderful pink flowers against the dark green of her leaves. After the flowers are done the foliage is still interesting, and then it turns red in the fall.
159. Sweet Corn (Zea mays saccharata rugosa) Not technically native to the area and can't survive the winter, but grown here long before colonization. She makes a rather handsome garden plant in my opinion.
160. Purple Poppymallow (Callirhoe involucrata) Just a strikingly beautiful groundcover for a dry area.
161. Smooth Rose (Rosa blanda) She doesn't bloom very often and suckers very slowly, but a non-aggressive rose is exactly the sort I need for property that isn't mine.
162. Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) Beloved of the bumblebees, and I like to use her in flavouring my pies.
163. Redroot Amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexa) Not pictured as I don't have pictures yet. Not sure if she reseeded this year. I rescued her from a fallow area and she has reseeded at least once, so we'll see.
164. Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) Not pictured as I don't have pictures yet. Also one I rescued from a fallow area. I don't know why so many people don't like purslane. She's a cute succulent groundcover in my opinion, and a nice snack too.
165. Crowfoot Violet (Viola pedata bicolor) Not pictured as I don't have pictures yet.
166. Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) The only one I planted without any known food use--it's poisonous--but purely because I saw a picture in David Attenborough's The Secret Life of Plants and always wanted one.
167. Wild Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) Beautiful flowers and tasty all around. What more could one want?
168. Field Thistle (Cirsium discolor) The parent of that field thistle, which appears to be dead in both halves, sadly, though her younger siblings are still alive. Her flowers are quite lovely and I do hope to see them in the garden next year if they don't get cut too.
169. Canada Milk Vetch (Astragalus canadensis) Interesting yellow-green flowers become deceptively inviting bean-looking fruits, but those don't have a known edible use. Other parts do, though.
170. Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) I can't remember if she's named as such because she was used to treat snakebites back in the day or if her flowerhead kind of looks like snake's rattle. Anyway she's interesting.
171. Compass Plant (Silphium laciniata) Not pictured because she hasn't made a flowerstalk yet. Must be young. Her relative the cup plant has been flowering reliably every year.
172. Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides) Not pictured as I haven't got any pictures yet.
173. Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera) A very drought-tolerant blazing star species. Not quite as showy as dense blazing star but a nice tall plant for the back of a sunny garden.
174. Blanketflower (Gaillardia xgrandiflora) A hybrid with one parent native to here and the other out west. Not sure if she's fertile or not. Got her because I needed another plant for the minimum order and she looks nice enough not to be mistaken for a weed.
175. Graceful Cinquefoil (Potentilla gracilis) Flowering in her first year in the garden! She's hopefully going to form a groundcover in a relatively short period, over which her flowerstalks will sway in the breeze.
176. Pale Purple Coneflower (Echinacea pallida) Glad I got pictures before the landlord cut her. (:
177. Wild Savoury (Clinopodium arkansana) Not pictured as I don't have pictures yet.
178. Small-Leaved Pussytoes (Antennaria parvifolia) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
179. Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium nigrescens) Not pictured as I haven't seen any flowers yet.
180. Red Elder (Sambucus pubens) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.

For Almost A Century, The Kuertz Family Guarded Hazelwood’s Natural Beauty
On the north side of Montgomery, a couple of nature preserves perpetuate the memory of Hazelwood, a once wild corner of Hamilton County. The Harris M. Benedict Nature Preserve is owned by the University of Cincinnati and the adjacent Johnson Preserve was donated to the City of Montgomery.
One hundred years ago, Hazelwood was rural enough to need its own deputy game warden. That role was filled by a truly eccentric gentleman named Louis Kuertz. Warden Kuertz knew the land around Hazelwood intimately and he knew many of the woodland creatures individually.
Rube, a crow, would alight on his hand or shoulder upon being called. When Kuertz hollered across the lake on his property, a turtle named Monte would rise from the lacustrine depths and waddle up to his feet. Kuertz was instrumental in having quail designated as a songbird – and therefore exempt from hunting – in Ohio.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f152c5ad6b5215719eae77a02b71dc57/be89930cb04690c8-5b/s540x810/dad0c5e4e7e73016ff8977f523642cde99b66bb2.jpg)
Kuertz worked variously as a truck farmer, a cabinetmaker and as game warden, and passed along his devotion for the natural world to his wife, Anna Belle, and especially his daughter, Gertrude. When Gertrude was just 12 years old, she inspired newspaper coverage because she would trek into the autumn woods to help her father locate poachers. The Cincinnati Post [4 November 1914] noted that Gertrude knew how to identify snipe, plover and quail and was proficient with a gun and fishing rod.
“Gertrude also studies butterflies and flowers and prefers books on botanical and avicular subjects to fairy tales. In winter she goes about in the woods scattering food for wild creatures that otherwise might starve.”
Gertrude’s affection for animals extended as well to domesticated varieties. In 1916, the Post ran a series of articles, allegedly composed by a turkey named Trixey as that chubby bird awaited the arrival of Thanksgiving. With all the build-up, the Post’s readers would have expected a traditional and savory end to the gag. Instead, on Thanksgiving Day, the Post located Trixey “in full bloom of life, smiling pleasantly” at the Kuertz farm. Gertrude was there to explain:
“’We do not slaughter our pets,’ said Miss Kuertz proudly.”
The article went on to list other animals who would not provide sustenance to the Kuertz family, including a red-haired pig named Ruddy, Nana the pony, Bossie the cow and Nanny, a goat of unusual variety donated to the Kuertzes by the Cincinnati Zoo.
“Ganders and geese, ducks and drakes, pigeons and chickens and pheasants and quail – all immune from the swish of the butcher’s knife.”
Gertrude also had a pet hawk. Her interests extended to the vegetable kingdom as well. When the Association for Preservation of Wild Flowers launched a campaign in 1921, Gertrude served as poster girl, holding a sign encouraging flower lovers to leave enough blooms to reseed for the next year.
There came a time when Frank Mills Jr. came courting and the Kuertz family naturally wanted to be sure he was as committed to environmental matters as their daughter. Mills derived from a well-known Cincinnati family. His father, Frank Senior, was the longtime director of the Cincinnati Athletic Club. A nude photograph of the elder Mills hung for many years at the club as an example of perfect manly physique. Apparently the Kuertzes approved, for a wedding date was set.

These days, it is considered conventional, if not downright old-fashioned, to be married in a church. A century ago, church marriages were the gold standard. Pretty much the only alternative to a religious venue was the local magistrate’s office. No one got married outside. Unless you were Gertrude Kuertz.
When Gertrude and Frank Mills said their vows on 3 October 1925, it rather caused a stir in Cincinnati social circles because the ceremony took place under the trees at the Kuertz family farm out in Hazelwood. The Cincinnati Post [8 October 1925] devoted several columns to the event:
“In what church was she to be married? She knew no place more sacred than the woods in which she had seen Creation march among her trees and touch them with life and where she witnessed since her childhood the gentleness of the divine love, even to the least of creatures. The woods were to be her church.”
As irregular as it might have seemed at the time, Gertrude’s outdoor wedding was officiated by the very proper Dr. Edward P. Whallon, described as “a minister of the Old School” in an official history of the Presbyterian Church.
The wedding culminated in a good-sized banquet, also served under the boughs of the great trees, illuminated by several bonfires. After the wedding, Gertrude’s appearances in the newspapers were largely confined to the gardening columns. She and Frank, a chemist by trade, excelled at growing almost anything except corn. Frank told the Post [7 July 1965]:
“There are too many varmints around. First the chipmunks dig up the seeds, then the rabbits eat the tender shoots and if there’s any left, the woodchucks strip the ears.”
And, of course, Gertrude would be opposed to shooting any of the brigands.
Gertrude and Frank lived most of their married life in a house personally constructed by her father on the family farm, next door to the house she grew up in. They raised a son and a daughter there.
Louis Kuertz had his own idiosyncratic architectural style that involved knocking together a rough iron framework and covering it with layers of stone and concrete. Kuertz built several such structures, including a bell tower for the local school, in the Hazelwood area. The house Kuertz built for his daughter was known to the nearby community as the Gingerbread House. It looked very much like the houses pictured in fairy tale books and had unique touches including dozens of nooks and crannies and a fireplace sculpted to look like a tree. All the doorknobs turned backwards and all the light switches were installed upside-down. Louis Kuertz died in 1933 and his ashes were placed under a memorial stone on the family estate.
Over the years, bits of the Kuertz farm were sold off. The Gingerbread House survived on a remnant acre until 1992, when it was sold to a developer by Gertrude’s daughter and was promptly demolished.

Would never describe myself as "a bright little patriot" but an all-black outfit with a grape-colored bag absolutely sounds like something I would wear
What are you wearing?

hi. here's another blaseball fan trying to get more people into blaseball
to understand what makes these guys insane, you need more context about blaseball. blaseball, just as a website, is a baseball simulator. except people die sometimes. other things happen too, like a player will siphon another player's blood in bloodrain, players get encased by a giant peanut (aka getting shelled), players change teams in feedback weather, etc etc etc.
blaseball fans make the entirety of the blaseball lore. all headcanons are excepted. like, jessica telephone is usually depicted as a girl with telephone features worked into her somehow (like a keypad on her face, giant phone for a bat, etc.), but you can just decide that you think jessica telephone is a lion and that's an official IRM (interdimensional rumor mill, a term used to describe all of these different interpretations). the wiki has irms for some of the players. i say some, because 1) more popular players don't really have an IRM section. players like jessica telephone, jaylen hotdogfingers, and nagomi mcdaniel have widely-accepted irms, so they kinda just get one. older players that aren't super popular but well-known by a specific team will have this as well, like reese clark of the houston spies. but lesser-known players will have multiple. for example, brock forbes has eleven rumors, terrell bradley has two, etc.
teams also write lore about the team itself. for example, the baltimore crabs live in baltimore, maryland, but the original players on the team killed Big Deb (the giant crab goddess that ruled baltimore) and now her carcass is used as the stadium :]
there's 24 teams, and all of them have their own culture and vibe. it can be a lot to try and figure out which team you want to go with. here's a cool hint: even tho the website makes you pick one team, you can join as many teams as you'd like. personally, i am on both the houston spies and baltimore crabs.
the teams: atlantis georgias, baltimore crabs, boston flowers, breckenridge (broken ridge) jazz hands, canada moist talkers, charleston shoe thieves, chicago firefighters, core mechanics, dallas steaks, hades tigers, hawaii fridays, houston spies, kansas city breath mints, los angeli unlimited tacos (the "los angeles" is plural), mexico city wild wings, miami dale, moab hellmouth sunbeams, new york millennials, ohio worms, philidelphia pies (everyone just calls them the philly pies), san francisco lovers, seattle garages, tokyo lift, and yellowstone magic.
so yeah! a lot! some teams you can get a vibe for immediately, but even then there's bits and pieces that aren't as obvious. for example, the tokyo lift is a gym-themed team, but they also have past lives as pirates.
if you want more info on individual teams, the houston spies bit together this slideshow. it's a little outdated, but the general vibes stay the same. for most teams, you can visit different team channels in the maincord, but some teams mostly or only use a sidecord, like the baltimore crabs. the maincord is huge, but you can mute most of the channels. i have every channel besides my team channels and announcements muted.
for finding more info: someone else mentioned the wiki, which is helpful, but hasn't been outdated for the new era (coronation). it's still not fully updated from the expansion era (because the expansion era was hella hectic). most teams will have their lore in their own discord server, since it's not allowed in maincord anymore (because people were being Weird when making lore and there's only so many mods). most if not all teams have links to their servers pinned in one of their channels.
going thru all of those channels and finding links can be A Lot. finding a team can be A Lot. but don't worry! there's no wrong answers and everyone is excited to have new people.
when i was picking teams, i considered these questions:
what size team do i want? i prefer smaller teams, so i went with the spies. some teams are big but don't feel too big, like the crabs (although i have most of the Crabitat channels muted).
do i like lore or stats more? i definitely prioritize lore but i ended up on two stat-heavy teams lol. every team needs a balance, though, so no matter what you want to contribute, you'll be welcomed (even if you don't feel like contributing anything). i definitely have a place within the spies for Making Lore
how much do i care about winning? i do not give a singular fuck, which is how i ended up on the spies.
how competitive of an environment do i want? some teams are much more cutthroat than others and that's important to think about
what aesthetics do i like? this one isn't as big for me personally. im not too attached to the aesthetics of the spies or crabs, and they aren't really aesthetics-driven, either. but some teams, like the lovers and the garages, have very established aesthetics. even if you don't "fit" within the team aesthetic, tho, the team itself can still be a good fit.
i think that's all i have for right now. i mean. its a lot. lol. but i may add more later :3
huh thats kinda cool. collaborative lore. love when people come together to make something<3 even more when that something is kinda fucked up<3
