Yoona woke up to the sound of someone knocking on her door, confusion laced into her features as she took her phone, quickly checking to see what time it was. She must have fallen asleep on the couch earlier, the TV playing some random show she didn't remember watching. Once she got up, she slowly made her way over to the door, not entirely sure who would stop by to visit her at this hour. However, the moment she opened the door, the sight in front of her caught her off guard. "Pureum...? Oh my god- what happened to you? Let's get you inside!"

After getting over the initial shock of seeing Pureum in that state, Yoona pushed the door open further, stepping outside to help the male get inside. She walked him over to the couch, making sure to be careful as she made him take a seat. The thought to bring him to the hospital ran throught her mind yet she figured he wouldn't be too keen on that, otherwise he would have went there instead of being here. She went to get the first aid kit, being quick enough to get back to him. "Did someone... Did you get into a fight with someone?" She couldn't help but ask, the concern in her tone quite evident as she focused her attention on tending to his injuries.

It wasn't too unusual that he seemed to be rather serious about giving advice, people's safety was a given thing in his daily life. And while Yoona was appreciative of people giving her advice, she typically went with things according to her own set ways. However, this time for once, she was invested in taking Pureum's advice seriously. Perhaps because he actually knew what he was talking about, whereas most other people simply gave others advice just to feel better about themselves or be in control.

"I'm actually surprised that you can just buy it like that. I mean, in a way that's a good thing since it's for one's safety. But at the same time, it's kind of concerning too. Thankfully you can't buy the ones the police uses." She let out a small chuckle, although it wasn't entirely a thing to laugh about. Yoona offered him a bright and thankful smile, giving a little nod afterwards. "Thank you, that would be very helpful and is also much appreciated. Oh, that's okay. Although it's also good to know that. Most of the time I have a hectic schedule myself, so I'll need to make some time for it first anyway."

Pureum nodded slowly, as though it made sense she was thanking him. When in honesty, he was slightly confused why she was thanking him. "Sure thing." As if he had done anything besides agreeing to drop the subject the two were stubborn about. Though, the topic was time to be moved on.

Despite the weird thanking exchange, Pureum took the advice giving very serious. Maybe it was related to his profession, but everyone's safety was always important to him. "There are places you can purchase them. And it's not illegal to have. You just can't buy some of the ones the police department uses, because those are stronger in pepper ratio or something. But yes, you can just go to a store that sells it and gets it." Nodding again in agreement, glad she was starting to open up to the fact that self defense was a good thing. "Sure, I can text you the information later. I should warn you though, that particular gym is rather busy and can have quite a number of people sometimes.."

20220714 Dear M. Up to Episode 9  [SPOILERS SORRY]

Dear M. was a highly anticipated drama that fizzled out and was postponed due to scandals and I guess just some bad luck. All that aside, I wanted to talk about the drama itself and the storytelling of what I have watched so far!

I still have three episodes left so we'll see what happens after I watched those but I wanted to write some things down now before I forget anything.

First thing's first, I do want to note that I have been LOVING this drama so far. I love the romance and (most of) the characters and it makes me feel all fuzzy inside and I have been having very tangible reactions to this show. But there are also some things that I really need to talk about for some reason that I don't know. 

The Relations Map is Kinda Crazy

I was trying to map it out for my friend and I started laughing I'll post it maybe. But there are so many love triangles it's funny. 

I Miss The Aesthetic (among other things) of Love Playlist

I think this is tough because I understand the appeal of the aesthetic (lighting, clothes, vibes, etc.) of Dear M., HOWEVER Love Playlist was beloved for a reason, and there's a reason Dear M. was even created after it. Love Playlist was fun, spunky, and went into different relationships in an interesting way. Dear M. though is very cliché and draws heavily from many beloved tropes. And of course, it is a lot more dramatic than I remember Love Playlist. I also miss the playlist part of it! Speaking of, where is this song Maple Latte, and the rest of the OST? Is it because the show was postponed? Lastly in this section, I really really miss Pureum and the more dynamic and character-y characters! I feel like Jimin was a lot more spunky than she turned out to be (I know she is played by a different actress, but the writing is different too?) and her character has become kinda one-dimensional? Some of the best-written characters are the more character-y ones like Mokjin and Young! I wish there was a bit more of that and a bit more of the goofiness and fun of being a college student instead of the melodrama they created. 

Jimin, Haneul, and Rosa's Storyline is too Frustrating

If you are going to pit one woman against another (which I am truly sick of these women against women stories) why can’t you make it more nuanced?? Why can’t you go beyond oh this one guy liked Jimin but Rosa liked him? It’s been too overdone and it’s starting to feel a little sexist… Also Rosa keeps making one manipulative move after another it’s honestly kind of impressive like she is playing CHESS. I loved Hwang Boreumbyeol in the ONF Webdrama, Can I Step In? (although I know that objectively, it is not a good drama HAHA) but I am starting to think I’m going to have a hard time looking at her the same. She is VERY good at glaring and making disgusted faces very impressive. Also I feel like Jimin and Haneul’s relationship should’ve been fleshed out more before they went against an adversary of their love. The last time watchers of Love Playlist saw them they JUST got together after Haneul realized that he does not like Pureum if I am remembering correctly. Again, a reason why Pureum would’ve made a great addition. 

I Really Love Minho and Jooah Though

I am truly a sucker for the childhood best friends to lovers trope. It’s also super super interesting because this feels like a new take on that trope with Minho not really being in the unrequited love the whole time? Usually it’s extended but it seems like they set it up so that his love blossomed from seeing her liking someone else (which again the jealousy thing is kinda overdone but I honestly think that the way they did it is more complicated than that it’s more like he is seeing her in a new light, not feelings being activated by jealousy which I can appreciate). I also like both actors in these parts, I think they were casted really well!! I also think Jaehyun would’ve blown up on the acting circuit if this show had come out as previously planned and if they were able to promote it. I am lowkey terrified of that man and am a little sus of him but I also have come to be a huge simp for him over the years. I was telling my friends that my heart does a weird thing when I hear his voice??? Anyways I hate when people serenade people because it’s so cringe but the way they did it with Jaehyun really had me giggling and kicking my legs while on my lunch break at work. 

Moon Joon’s Character has Thrown Me for a Loop

I honestly cannot believe this man. First, my reaction was very strong for him, and I couldn’t tell if he was the main male lead or not? I’m usually a sucker for second male leads so I just kinda figured it would be Jaehyun at first. Like Joon was perfect but then holy shit him taking credit for Minho’s app and then HOLY SHIT HE HAD A GIRLFRIEND?? That plot twist was too much of a twist like it really came out of nowhere. I understand trying to surprise the viewer but I feel like this is to the point where it doesn’t make sense? So weird, unexpected, and honestly I’m not sure I like how this character turned out even though I REALLY liked him earlier. How could he have a girlfriend I’m so confused there were too many romantic things in a row they KISSED ugh so confusing.

I Appreciate Jooah Figuring Out Her Dream Through Her First Love

I feel like people, ESPECIALLY women are scolded and looked down on for discovering things because of other people but Young was right when she said that all of us are made up of the people that we interact with. I think it is really admirable that Jooah decides to stick with what she discovered she liked and not be knocked down because the reason why she came to like it didn’t work out. 

Alrighty so these are my thoughts on Dear M. for now. I am sure there are a lot more that I am forgetting but I am now tired of typing and I think I’m done for the day haha. If I have more thoughts after finishing the drama up I will post about it but I also might not have any. 

So far: 8/10!! I really like it as long as I separate it from Love Playlist in my mind but I also know that it is pretty trope-y and that’s not for everyone no matter how much I might love it.

Year 1s: Yu Jin - friendly boy who is still very fresh and full of life as long as there is no maths involved. A marshmallow who somehow can fight well and kick asses if his friends are hurt. Do not piss off his brothers, adopted or not. Like video games and plushies. Ja Yun's birth brother. Ara - Spunky girl who can kick everyone's ass with a smile. One of Yu Jin's best friends and very protective of her weaker friends. No one dares to make her angry, and she might or might not have made a teacher resign in fear. Her best subject is Home Econs. Pureum - meek boy adopted by local gangster whom everyone picks on until Yu Jin and Ara made him their friend and become his bodyguards. Struggling student who feels bad about relying on the two for almost anything and wants to become stronger and someone they can rely on too. Areum - Sweet sunshine girl very much protected by her brother Pureum. Very curious and innocent, she became fast friends with Ara and the two often go off on adventures together while her brother follows along worried. The best student of the four, and after Ara, she is the most adored by Hanarin. 

Year 2s: Mano - problem student who riles others up for fun. Saeha's nephew and respects him a lot, to the extent of picking fights with those who dislike the teacher. Not that he will admit it in his uncle's face though. His dream is to become a doctor because he gets to stick lots of needles into his patients. And also to treat Leon’s illness. Leon - a very frail and sick student who often hangs around Mano. No one is sure how they become friends, but they just somehow get along, together with Ignatio who sneaks into their class sometimes and sneaks them candy bars. Very fascinated by poisons, and spends his free time reading up on poisons in the school library. Maru - often mistakened as a delinquent due to his dyed hair, but actually a nice kid with low confidence. Somehow just often get involved in fights because others think he is a delinquent, and became very good at running away from trouble because of that. Being tutored by his next door neighbour Choi and has a huge crush on the year 4. Luka - the other delinquent of year 2, he should rather stick to himself but due to his purple hair highlights the fight often seeks him out instead. Somehow the fights often involve Maru too, which resulted in an animosity towards the blonde. If left alone he is quite an alright guy, just don’t let Maru get anywhere near him.

Year 3s: Ja Yun - trickster who often gets into detention when his adoptive brother is too done with it to stop him. He seems to like pestering the strong loners, which Gotaya attributes to being too dumb to live, but somehow he never gets beaten to pulp. Everyone stops the news of his antics from reaching his brother Yu Jin, because the last time that happened, everyone involved including Bigak got lectured by the year 1 for hours. Gotaya - Ja Yun's oh my god not again adoptive brother. He is totally done with this shit and is often found face palming at Ja Yun's antics. A model student and prefect, very good at sports, but questions his life everyday looking after his two idiots. Can’t wait to graduate and  Yeon Hwa - The school beauty who packs a meaner punch than Ara. Ja Yun's childhood friend and often gets into trouble together with him, and tries to pull Gotaya in to whatever they are doing. Very atheletic and has many admirers, but no one dares approach her. Bigak - On one end of the third year delinquents is Jayun, the friendly if not idiotic troublemaker, on the end is Bigak. He is very dangerous, and there is a rumour that he killed someone with his bare hands that even the fourth years avoid him like the plague. Ryu Guheul - A tall student who follows Bigak around, whom no one had ever heard him speak. A kind hearted student who helps the first years who asks him for help when he is alone, most theorised he is being bullied by Bigak to do his biding.

Year 4s: Mu Yeung - Very serious guy who can't wait for high school to be over and done with since it bores him out. Ignatio's twin, and Maru and Yu Jin's adoptive brother. He cares much for these two kids, and will step in and punch out whoever who bullies his younger brothers. Ignatio - Fun loving dude who skips school to hang out at the mall yet still somehow manages to get straight As for each exam. Sometimes sneaks into Maru's class to make sure his brother isn't bullied, and became fast friends with Mano and Leon somehow. Choi - the friendly and hot neighbour who somehow shot up like bamboo during puberty. Recently helping to tutor Maru because the poor boy is failing his subjects and too scared to let his brothers or parents know, and is totally unaware of Maru's growing crush on him. Eun Yul - the glutton who leeches on Mu Yeung and Choi's lunches because he is a bottomless pit for food. Lazy and refuses to move most of the time, when he is riled up he can be quite violent. Once stabbed a teacher who pissed him off with a cutter and most try to avoid him if possible.

Teachers: Saeha - Science teacher who is so done with everything and has a headache each time his nephew ends up in detention or trouble again. Cares much for the boy but he'd never admit it. I don't find him annoying, actually. I know that sometimes I make it seem like I do, but he's a fun and nice person to be around. I secretly find his reactions amusing. Oh, definitely that it's okay to accept help once in a while! There are people out there who actually want to help out of the goodness of their heart and because they care.

Introduction to CHAOS: Bae Lyung Edition

- older twin - is tiny  - like so small an actual dwarf - part of the visual line and deserves it  - also model  - smol but feisty  - also so cute like so actually cute  - unnie line but so innocent - really really good dancer and choreographer - also ridiculously smart maybe even the smartest - did i mention lipstick? it looks too good on her - dimples - sugar allergy but always hyped - also deals with a lot of fear of failure, stress and anxiety help her - older cook  - responsible Bae sister  - has schedules for everything. it’s getting out of hand but also the one and only reason they get everywhere on time - curls did i mention curls - from a poor/neighbourhood, has fought tooth and nail to survive and become the idol she is now - is one of the three people world wide who can handle Ryung and that’s impressive - used to be part of “Hyped”, an underground rapper/singer band she did with Dae - what a kind person honestly it’s so nice  - opposite of her sister but it works - cat lady #1 - is also one of those people who can wear anything and it looks amazing

Relationships with the other members: Chae-ha: very similar interests, keeps her balanced bc Lyung is more down to earth Myung: the two innocents of the group protect them at all kosts Ryung: all i can say is that the Bae sisters are I-C-O-N-I-C Dae: they are actual children together, energy levels wayy too high and wayy too early in the mornings, also helps Dae with leader stuff Areum: they help each other with their needs bc they understand Pureum: lyung gets shook at how not innocent maknae Pureum is
