Teen Roy Harper and Oliver Queen shenanigans? I usually just see grown up Roy with Ollie but I crave more of a father - son bond.

ty for sending through the ask! they send me fucking INSANE!!! i love complex parent-child relationships and i think a lot of people see roy’s speedy era with ollie as just. all bad. but it isn’t! ollie is a good dad overall, yes he has had horrible moments and made lots of mistakes but he did work hard to fix his wrongs (n-52 ollie and roy's first re-meeting can go suck my left tit).

(sorry i took so long to respond! these posts actually take quite a while to type out, and get my thoughts down.)

the first time roy got sick while he was with ollie, ollie was stressing. he’s not ready for this! stitches? easy. girl troubles? no problem. but a fever and runny nose? oh god oh fuck. he’s relying on what he’s seen parents do in movies, so he decides to read roy a story! roy is certainly too old for this and also Doesn’t Love reading, but he bears it because it’s kinda funny for a bit. after like third time ollie tries, roy just goes “pls. you don’t have to do this. lets just watch a movie or something.”. now it becomes a tradition that whenever one of them gets sick, the other will just chill and watch movies with them. they don’t need to talk, the quiet company is much better.

roy genuinely looks up to ollie, so much. he admires the man in everyway, roy grows as a person in ollie's presence. roy developed his sense of justice and ethics from ollie (you can see it through how they both prefer to try and change the system over the individual). i think for the longest time, ollie could do no wrong in roys eyes, which is why their relationship fell apart so harshly because roy had unrealistic expectations of the man and ollie wss just... Not being a good father in this moment. it took a while to adjust his self worth to not be based off his perceived value to others.

ollie may be a lot of things, but he is Not dumb enough to not give roy the sex talk. is it the best? probably not. but he was VERY serious about having it when roy moved in, because he remembers himself as a teenager and is just like "oh god. oh GOD..." (he likes to think hes not like regina georges mum, but he deffo is.... ur getting old dude :/ sorry to tell you)

when ollie first starts going out with someone, roy goes and gives ollie the exact same talk. in front of his date. ollie is just like "ahaha.... kids right?" roy has to spend the night at hal's house hiding out from him. (not out of any serious fear of repercussion, more playful).

i know the stereotype is that ollie's always getting into fights over politics, but it is actually so incredibly both of them. these two only increase in energy and passion when with each other. catch ollie going "YEAH THATS MY BOY!" when roy is chewing the fuck out of someone.

to me? they are both so autistic... idc no one can convince me otherwise. ollie doesn't realise till he hits his late teens, and even then hes in denial about it. he comes to terms with it a bit better after the island, so when he starts to recognise the same things in roy? he is quick to give that boy all the support he needs. he refuses to even let anyone talk shit or about it near roy, because he is so petrified of the the same internalised ableism he had manifesting in roy too.

ollie gets a small tattoo for roy, nothing big. probably just a little one on his back or ankle or something. he didn't even really plan to do it? it just happened. he sends roy a pic after its done and roy is just. emotionally wrecked.... he does not know what to say.... how does he even express what this means to him? its a permanent commitment to him. (he ends up just messaging back "looks ugly :/", ollie can read between the lines well enough to know what he means).

the first near death experience roy has with ollie he gets Fucked Up over it... he's already lost 2 other father figures, he can't lose another. he doesn't say anything about it, but hes attatched to the hip for ollie for at least 2 weeks... ollie didnt even realise why till he mentioned it off handedly to diana and shes like.... thats a child. hes scared. Fix It. they still dont talk about it, but ollie stops getting snappy at roy for following him around.

i feel like i need to get this off my chest but oliver with that necklace is the hottest fucking thing, especially in the scene with the tall grass because to me it screams two things, it’s perceived as the “rough” version of something like a signet ring that a lot of ned / chav working-class boys did wear in the 00s - and still do, at least in scotland) especially because it’s silver to both the audience and felix but when you have a proper look at close up, you realise that the necklace is defo expensive as fuck, like it was hiding in plain sight.

also, thirsty me coming out but the idea of fucking him half asleep and being utterly entranced with the sparkling diamond’s twinkling in the slight light seeping into the dark bedroom, an embodiment of who oliver really is in that vulnerable moment is an idea i cannot get out of my head 👩🏻‍🍳😘 (which i might end up writing but i’ve just gotta muse with someone who loves that lil’ freak boy as much as i do)

i fucking love this analysis. it's seriously so nuanced and absolutely true!!

the things we see from oliver that indicate his deceit are clear as day once you rewatch. and i love the analysis of the jewellery being a glimmer into his real life. it's expensive and that's something that we as the audience don't realise because it's such a norm for working class boys to wear a chain that we don't question it, but also the fact that it's hiding in plain sight; the fact that it shows the audience that he's lying about his situation but even then he goes unnoticed - no one sees it.

half-asleep sex is fucking god tier oh my god. the way the diamond would catch the soft sliver of moonlight that seeps past the curtains, the punched gasps he would let out as you hooked a leg around him to anchor him into your own body, bare tits pressed against the hard expanse of his chest as he rocks his hips into yours. maybe you even grab hold of the necklace as he loses control, muscles twitching and convulsing with pleasure and he loses himself. the facade slips. it's the first time he's not in complete control since he arrived at saltburn. and you know you have him right where you want him.

Formating is something that I actually get a bit anxious about during the arting process, especially for comics that have a lot of dialogue

Cause other than making sure that the art and dialogue are easy to follow along, i need to account for differences in how people perceive said art and dialogue, a lil example of this is this lil panel

however people are different and i know there are people who tend to read it like this:

So I try my damn best to make the dialogue is easy to follow along so even people who usually read dialogue the second way, actually read it in the first way (aka the way i intend it to be read, whether I succeed or not isn’t something I’m aware of but I sure do hope so hahaha)

And I also love to experiment with panels to see how to make the comic look a lot cooler while still maintaining simplicity and its easiness to follow along

Here’s a quick example of the same page but after playing around with the panels, the first is the og page look, the second is the final page look (you’re lucky to see a page from an unreleased yet to be finished comic dbhdhdhdh)

Needless to say comics are hard to make but still are very fun

“Commander, we’ve lost contact with CT-2639 on the eastern perimeter.”

Marshal Commander Neyo swiveled his head, pulling away from your hands as you cleaned the cut on his forehead. Head wounds always bled like a mudscuffer, and this one had made an unbelievable mess, but it wasn’t severe enough to be life-threatening. You silently followed his movement, continuing to work as Neyo replied to the trooper.

“Send a BARC trooper to reinforce his position,” Neyo snapped, clearly irritated that the situation had not already been handled several rungs down the command ladder.

“They’re all out on scouting missions, sir,” the trooper said nervously.

Neyo nodded shortly, then turned back to you. “You, medic. Grab a medkit. You’re coming with me.”

It galled you slightly that he hadn’t bothered to learn your name, even though he had refused to allow any of the other medics in the 91st treat him since the first time you’d patched him up months ago, but given that he was one of the highest-ranking clones in the GAR, you weren’t about to call him out.

“Yes, sir,” you replied, quickly sealing the laceration with a spray bandage. Luckily, you were nearly finished treating him before the trooper had interrupted; otherwise, you had no doubt the commander would have simply shoved his bucket back onto his bloody head and jumped on a BARC speeder.

You shrugged the heavy medpack onto your back and followed Neyo to a BARC speeder with an auxiliary stretcher, watching him nervously, dread swirling in your gut.

“Well?” he asked, his tone clipped and impatient.

“I’m not speeder trained, sir. Sorry, sir,” you admitted, hoping that he wouldn’t reassign you to a different unit as he tended to do when his subordinates weren’t up to his frankly unrealistic standards.

His sigh was audible through his helmet’s speaker. “Climb on the back.”

“Sir?” you asked, startled. It was going to be one hell of a tight fit on a speeder designed for one.

“Secure the medpack to the bike and get the kriff on,” he growled. “We don’t have all day.”

“Yes, sir,” you said, snapping rigidly to attention.

You squeezed in behind him, trying very hard not to think about the way his hips pressed your thighs open, or the way his strong back felt against your chest as you wrapped your arms around him and hung on for dear life. The BARC speeder was unbelievably fast, and the landscape whizzed by in a dizzying blur as Neyo expertly navigated to CT-2639’s last known position. The bike turned abruptly, and you unconsciously tightened your arms harder around his torso. He dropped his hand briefly from the controls and settled it over yours, adjusting your position so you gripped his belt instead of the slick plastoid of his chestplate, then raised it back to the handlebar.

The bike slowed as you approached your destination, sweeping the terrain for any sign of the missing sentry. A flash of white and red plastoid at the bottom of a ravine drew Neyo’s eye.

“There.”

The speeder came to a halt, and you jumped off, grabbing the medpack and running to the downed trooper. He was unconscious, but his vitals were strong enough—for the moment—and Neyo helped you stabilize his spine as you carefully transferred and secured the patient to the stretcher on the side of the BARC.

“Bike isn’t powerful enough to carry three,” Neyo said as he mounted the speeder.

You nodded in understanding. “Yes, sir. I’ll make my way back on foot. He needs more care than I can give him here, and the base medics are equipped for it.”

“Negative. Hold position here. I’ll send someone to extract you.”

“Yes, sir.” You hesitated, and Neyo looked up at you, his helmet blocking his expression—not that you’d ever been particularly good at reading the commander’s cold, hard eyes. “What’s his name?”

Neyo was silent for a beat. “Boey.” His helmet tilted as he surveyed you from head to toe, as if suddenly realizing he was about to ditch you in an active war zone without armor or weapons. He handed you his DC-15 and climbed back onto the speeder. “Try not to get killed.”

Luckily, no battle droids appeared to ruin your day. You didn’t have to wait long before you heard the whine of a speeder approaching your position, but you were surprised to see not one, but two BARCs appear, and one of them was the commander himself. He drew to a halt, and you immediately surrendered the blaster to him. The other trooper looked back and forth between you and Neyo, but stayed silent.

“Boey?” you asked.

“He’ll make it,” Neyo replied, sliding forward to make space for you. “Get on.”

You obeyed, feeling very thankful that it was a short trip to the base as you once again straddled Neyo’s hips and tried to think unsexy thoughts. 

For kriff’s sake, he doesn’t even know my name. He’s kind of a dick. Why am I like this? Maybe when he reassigns me for not having achieved every single karking qualification in the GAR, I’ll end up in the 212th—if I’m going to have an unprofessional and inappropriate crush on a superior officer, Commander Cody seems like a nice, safe choice. Why do I always seem to go for the dicks? Some mysteries may never be solved.

Neyo started up the speeder and took off at top speed, leaving the other BARC trooper behind to secure the position. Unfortunately for your sanity, it seemed that Neyo had decided to inspect the entire perimeter, because there was no sign of the base anywhere, and the ride seemed interminable. As you gradually became accustomed to the speed of the bike, you tore your eyes away from the center of his back and began to look around at the landscape as you hurtled through the air.

It was actually a beautiful planet, when there wasn’t an active battle going on. Neyo drew the bike to a halt at the edge of a cliff with a stunning view out over the lush forest. He pulled off his helmet and set it on the bike, then dismounted, holding out his hand to assist you off the speeder.

When you met his eyes, they were as hard, cold, and unreadable as ever, and you couldn’t help wondering if he’d decided to just dropkick you off the cliff instead of bothering with the hassle of reassignment paperwork. Well, if this view was the last thing you ever saw, you couldn’t deny that it was breathtaking.

“What is this place?” you asked, unable to keep the awe out of your voice.

“Western perimeter. Cliff provides a natural defense.”

You looked down over the cliff and immediately regretted your decision, feeling dizzy and lightheaded at the distance to the bottom. You swayed dangerously, and Neyo grabbed you by the waist and pulled you back from the edge, your back colliding with his armored chest.

“Damn, that’s a… hell of a drop,” you managed to say. 

“Mm-hmm,” he agreed, his voice low and close to your ear.

You couldn’t resist asking, “Is this where you dispose of medics who don’t know how to ride speeders?” 

“What?” You felt his head turn as he observed you closely. “Why the kriff would I expect a medic to be BARC speeder certified? Do you know how much training BARC troopers have?”

You cleared your throat, trying not to dwell on how very, very close he was; or the deep, quiet rumble of his voice next to your ear; or the way his hands still rested on your waist. “So… you’re not going to reassign me?”

“I should,” he said quietly.

Your heart plummeted and your stomach twisted. You stared down at the ground in front of you, desperately trying to hide your embarrassment and disappointment.

One of his hands slid forward, flattening over your belly and pulling your body back against him. You felt the rough fabric of his glove move softly across your jaw as he tilted your face toward him with his other hand. His thumb brushed your lips, and then his hand drifted down to rest at the base of your throat, your pulse racing wildly beneath the gentle pressure.

“I shouldn’t—” His lips were so close to yours that you felt his breath ghost over your skin as he spoke. “—with a subordinate…”

You couldn’t tear your gaze away from his mouth. It was all you could see as you whispered, “You’re a marshal commander. Everyone is your subordinate.”

He drew a shallow breath, but made no move to close the tiny distance between you. The moment stretched out unbearably, until at last you could no longer resist the temptation. The tip of your tongue barely grazed the corner of his mouth before he snapped, crashing his lips into yours, clutching your body against his as though, if he only held you tightly enough, he could feel your warmth through the cold, unyielding plastoid of his armor. He kissed you with a passion that left you breathless and reeling, and when at last his lips parted from yours, he nuzzled your face gently as he whispered your name.

“Wait…” you breathed. “You know my name?”

For the first time since you’d met him, Neyo smiled. “I’ve always known.”

and yet at the same thing i feel like there's a MILLION things i could touch on!!

The way the fandom perceives him, his ships, his cut dialogue, the way he's drawn, the ridiculous discourse. He's been my comfort character for so long it almost feels like i'm talking about an old friend lmao

i think to start i should probably specify that these are 100% my own opinion; yes they are forged in my interpretation of canon content, so that means that some of this post will seem really tight-knit to canon, while other portions will seen outrageously out-of-character. And that is ok! I try to base my head-canons and perception of characters off of their personalities and such, but I can't help but be a little silly sometimes.

Probably first on my docket is his weird obsession with Lukas and Jesse...Yes i call it obsession, though I wouldn't call it far to suspect that Aiden is dependent on Lukas, he's so grotesquely attached. Even from the first time we meet him, Aiden's immediately searching for Lukas' validation.

"Lukas! Get a load of these losers!"

Why? Maya and Gill have already stirred enough insults that surely he's heard by now. Is it just the potential of being addressed? Of being heard? It's only to be brushed off.

Lukas calls the shots. That is told to us very early on. Whether that's because he's actually respected or Maya and Gill are forced to fall into place because Aiden will listen to him- who truly knows (probably the first one).

Later on he antagonizes Jesse again, and once again, only really deterred by Lukas. He's trying to lighten the mood, ease the tension. All the while Aiden seethes behind him. The hatred is so clear. Once again like I said before he's in this constant fight for attention against Jesse. First it's just with Lukas, then its with the world.

You could even say him breaking the lava was for attention. He smashed a STONE BLOCK. WITH HIS BARE HAND. This is past school bully levels of torment now, he's so desperate to make sure Jesse stays below him that he's willing to break his hand in order to destroy Jesse's build. And you know.

he doesn't even start to realize how bad of an idea it was until lukas comes up from behind him.

Of course, depending on whether or not you make Olivia and Axel stay to save the build, Jesse's gang either wins or loses. Of course the interaction you get from Lukas afterward is different, but god.

"It's not cool you had to deal with Aiden being an idiot."

You just know he was lingering behind a stall, overhearing a conversation he wasn't meant to. Later on we meet him again and somehow he seems even more pissy.

"How's your stupid pig" it's not out of genuinely. Lukas probably made him ask. He goes on and on, he won, why is he so mad?

Of course this eventually bounces off into the birth of the Wither Storm.

Aiden was in the conference room when it happened. When was the last time he saw Lukas? All he knows now is that there's some devilish creature tearing the earth apart and EATING people. Maybe for once he's worried about someone other than himself, but of course he's terrified. Hell he's the first one out of there.

He manages to group up with Lukas again, only to lose him. We know that post EP4 he managed to evade the Wither Storm because he can show up to help distract it in the ending battle, so it further begs the thought.

He and Maya and Gill were out there alone. Without their leader- helpless. They probably presumed him dead, or worse. And in the wake of the rubble it's almost like Aiden has a change of heart—and then a miracle. Lukas is okay. Lukas is okay and he needs their help. He needs Aiden's help. Oh sweet recognization.

He does their bidding for what? To have his spotlight be stolen by Jesse. And just when he thought he got Lukas back, once again. He's been taken from Aiden. First by the Wither Storm, now by Jesse.

Because Lukas is a hero now. And Aiden is just the guy who won the building competition.

The gap between EP4 and EP5 is unexplained but we can guess from the reactions of the townspeople to the state of Beacon Town that it's been at least a month or two- maybe more.

But in that time Aiden's been lingering, meditating on his thoughts. He tries in some way to confront Lukas probably, to try and regain what they'd lost. But no, no there's no going back. So the Ocelots are no more, and the Blazerods rise from the ashes. Aiden is their leader now, and it's getting to his head. Lukas called the shots, Lukas was his shining star in a way- but now with Aiden as their lead, he has no one to look up to—a big fat fucking lie.

Aiden will ALWAYS need Lukas' validation. Even in his attempts to berate him there's almost a weird sense of falsivity to the statements. Insistence that "they ditched him", the Ocelots were "Lukas' gang" anyways. They're not connected to him anymore! (Gill even comments about the Ocelots being a cooler name. almost like a sign that breaking off from Lukas was Aiden's idea in the first place. A strike back for leaving him.)

"The minute the Order decided you were cool he wouldn't stop sniffing around you like a tame dog."

He is SO jealous. It's a statement that's embedded in cruelty but at it's core, he speaking to a mirror. Was he not following around at Lukas' side for the whole of EP1? Searching for him? Hoping? If anything Aiden is the tame dog here, Lukas is the one holding the leash.

I won't recite everything I said in the last post (though I'm sure I've practically already done that), but once again he goes from heeling to Lukas to trying to murder the guy. Talk about a messy break-up.

Part of me wishes that his last fight was with Lukas rather than with Jesse (of course this would never happen obviously). We only get a snippet from he and Lukas' mini fist-fight in EP5, which ends horribly no matter what you decide to do. But there's such a strong hatred in the lines.

"I've got him Jesse!"

"Oh you've got me?"

It's angry. When did it turn from "The Ocelots," from "Lukas and Aiden," to : "I've got him." Betrayal. This is almost a final hit. A final straw that breaks the camels back about every thought Aiden has been thinking since Lukas left.

Lukas isn't his friend anymore.

Lukas is on Jesse's side now.

And Aiden will not have that. Not one bit.

I wonder a lot about what happened during the "before" of Sky City's end. Did they just go ham? Or did Aiden sit and think about what he'd done for a few minutes. What about Petra and Ivor? What goodness did he have in his heart to let them go? Maybe just the shock of coming to terms with the fact that he just killed his best friend. No. No Lukas isn't his best friend anymore. He just killed his enemy. The biggest pain in his side.

Anyways, most of this is probably just me recounting what I've already said. When it comes to his story it's pretty clean-cut and simple, it's just the interpretation. For me, it's a descent to madness. And honestly I relate LMAO

I think a real big eye-opener for me was codf1shbaby's Aiden's Memoir, which is. So. Fucking. Good. It's heavy as hell, but god damn is it well written. Really got me to thinking about his psychology on a deeper level, which is GOOD!! Aiden is one of those characters who gets read at face value (which is fine, I expect it. He has like a total of 40 lines in the whole of MCSM), which I think forces a narrative that there's nothing there worth looking for.

I implore you to read Aiden's Memoir if you like deep psychological stories, and if you like the writing PLEASE check out my friend Cosmo's stuff (shameless plug), he's extremely talented.

I also implore you to do your own searching! There are so many characters who are worth diving into!

That's EXACTLY how I see OdyPen 🥹 They are basically "mirrors" of one another and are just so intuned with each other in just how they ARE. Sharing a mind, soul, life, etc, and practically everything in every way except physically (in which yeah, demisexual lol. aka how they do share it physically)

They're stubborn and a bit prideful so in a way, they wouldn't stand for anything else. I even often write them in a way that is very "all or nothing" in how they react to things.

Like Odysseus just does not have a bride prize/concubine as why? Sex isn't on his mind unless you match his mind. (which yeah...Only Penny can do lol). Even Circe in my fics literally illusions shit up to look like Penelope as he wasn't "showing his true colors in an act of lust" as she realizes that he can't even feel it otherwise. (complicated but not explaining that now)

Both Penelope and Odysseus where they're unaffected/not needing/wanting sex unless they're with their person. As a "Why share a body when we don't even share the same mind?" for them. It's almost heightened by the fact that this part of relationships belongs only to them and is special between them. Nothing is minimized by the fact that they're demisexual and wouldn't experience a draw to anyone else.

For Penelope, Love and lust only exist in Odysseus. For Odysseus, love and lust only exist in Penelope. It is why everything with the goddesses was especially awful for my Odysseus and also why neither of them couldn't just "start anew".

and wow, the plot thickens! it seems we’re hurtling right towards the foreshadowed duel between prince and rebel! (i’m putting my money on ▇▇▇▇.) i must say, though, i really love the contrast between the ways in which you developed mc’s chemistry with both contenders. while her interactions with yeonjun all take place in romantic, grand and/or dreamlike decors, her little moments with taehyun are often set in bleak, humble and/or dangerous places. there’s also, obviously, the fact that yeonjun is so expressive about his feelings and taehyun, so reserved about his. it should feel like one has an edge over the other… and yet! and yet, the romance never feels like it’s unequally distributed. (although i suppose taehyun and mc’s “pay-off” has yet to occur? it appears to me that it did sort of happen in the last chapter, since making himself understood is his biggest struggle and he did, in fact, manage to make his intentions clear for once... but then he fucked up? what was the “pay-off” of yeonjun and mc’s romantic storyline, btw? to me it would seem like the part where he kneels in public but idk how everyone else perceives it!) either way, i find that mc has as much tension with taehyun as she does with yeonjun and only a fantastic writer could achieve such mastery. i don’t think i should be reading this for free. oh, i also love how the notion of “promise” was brought up several times in part five. the subtle references to the star seekers lore in your own lore are *chef’s kiss*

things are definitely getting more tense between taehyun and yeonjun. yeonjun is NOT afraid to overstep and taehyun… i can’t say what i want to say here 🤭

i’m so glad that you guys are able to feel the difference. i tried to be very intentional in the portrayal of the two different lifestyles that MC leads when interacting with the both of them! i hoped to make the reader feel the difference in the scenes to subconsciously sort of feel the same way that MC feels, loving the wist with yeonjun and then brought right back down to earth when interacting with taehyun. i think there’s also something to be said about how MC doesn’t really tackle or think about her problems with yeonjun, but when she’s around taehyun she usually is forced to contend with them.

i think that the payoff for taehyun has definitely not come yet, and yeonjun’s (in my opinion) comes a little later as well. you’ll just have to wait and see…. >:) yeonjun’s confession scene was definitely a massive payoff, though. maybe the ‘big’ moment between them, but i’m not 100% sure, we’ll see how things happen 😭

also PLS😭 TSFAWC is going to end up being around the average fantasy novel length when it’s done, i feel it :,)

hi angel, first of all, thanks a lot for your ask 💞 i wasn't offended at all by your ask, i've liked reading all your thoughts on the fic & especially on jk, it has made me laugh a lot 😂 i also take them into consideration for perfect time, it helps me build the characters and it also helps me to understand how you perceive them. because i imagine one thing but i can be understood totally differently.

the perfect example is eunjin, the baby mama. for me, she's simply trying to help, she doesn't want anything from jk and she doesn't feel threatened by oc because she isn't in love with jk nor does she believe that her daughter would call oc mom. she's concerned and wants to help. i didn't build her to be toxic but some of you perceive her like that.

then yeah, jk has been acting like a complete idiot. he hasn't moved on at all, and is very immature. he simply was overwhelmed with everything & didn't know how to act when he finally got what he desperately wanted for 10 years.

He struggled but managed to tumble out to his little table as he picked up his phone from it and opened the text Gina sent

"That's it, I'm comin' in." Suction Cup Man said as he took the first two steps in before being caught in a pink trap like thing. The Wizards eyes turned back to pure white.

"Violent dumbass, heart so rotten. Become soft with a heart of cotton. A twisted soul who yelled and swore.. cause a ruckus nevermore!"

The orb power ball thing in the Wizards hands exploded as a white light was seen outside of the windows for a moment. A smoke was in the room, but it cleared quite quickly. "That ought to calm your inner fire. Now you may start a life where you--" He was cut off by a squeal of a laughing fit. "Inspire...? I-- ohh... shit..." floating pink hands and feathers were absolutely destroying the asshole in front of him. "WH--WHAHAHAHAHAHAT DID YOU DOOHOHOHOHOHO?! *snort* SHIHIHIHIHIT!!" So I started to think about queer media (as you do) and the question hit me like a truck

What is better, a subtle queer story or a explicit queer story? Why the difference?

This is gonna be long so get a snack, sit down and let's go

First off I wanna say this is not talking about queerbaiting. I'm not interested in that atm. When I say explicit vs subtle I mean the topic of queerness beyond romance, I mean stories that go further than "I can't like this person we're from the same sex oh no"

To explain myself better I'm going to touch on different pieces of media that show queerness subtly and explicitly, but those will also be divided between Japanese media and western media (oh God if you have recs on more queer media that isn't from the west nor Japan pls give it to me give it now-)

This post will have as representatives of queer Japanese media: "Our dreams at dusk", "Villain", "Requiem of the Rose King" and "Stars Align" (if applicable the manga spoilers will be kept to a minimum)

And the representatives of western media will be "Felix Ever After", "Heartstopper" and "Our Flag Means Death"

I bet now you can see how some of the media in the western group is similar to the Japanese media. All of the works mentioned are undoubtedly queer, but there's a key difference: a few of them talk about queerness with explicit terms (gay, trans, queer, etc) while others go more on vibes (the queerness is right there but its not named with labels or common terms)

Now I'm not saying the ones that are explicit are better or vice versa, but it made me think about the difference and why a method works for certain stories and not for others.

Let's go to the beginning: I was reading a recent manga called "Villain" by teniwoha and other collaborators. The manga is based in the vocaloid song of the same name. The story and themes within the song are pretty much gender-non conforming and trans people being vilified by society because they are different. But so far I can see the manga is trying to add more layers to the concept of queer people being vilified (I'll make another post about that I promise). The point is that the story explored a trans-masc nb teenager and a gay teenager who has a crush on the other person. The thing with this manga and these characters is that sometimes they're too...on the nose. Not only tries to sneak references to the song evert time it can, but some of the moments seem too classic, like if they googled "how do nb feel about being nb" and they got some testimonials from teenagers.

But that's the thing. those feelings are still valid because they belong/ed to someone. If you personally have not experience something, amplifying voices of people who have is the thing you should be doing.

All of that to say that "Villain" feels pretty explicit in my eyes and they are only in chapter 6. I strongly feel like the manga will get even more explicit because reasons (i will explain in another post i promise).

This moment reminded me to other Japanese media that are pretty explicit with queer terms, moments, etc. "Stars Align" and "Our Dreams at Dusk" present terms, reflections, etc that make queerness explicit. Characters in "Stars Align" reflect on gender identity and the future, while characters in "Our Dreams at Dusk" show the reader all the kinds of genders and sexual orientations that exist. They even touch on how they are perceived in their society.

"This is all fine" I hear you cry "but we already got stuff like that. Media that explicitly shows queerness as a way to teach the audience about it" and you're right! we have media like "Felix Ever After" and "Heartstopper". They both talk about terms, gender identity, labels, etc. Media that talks about queerness in a way that makes it the focus to teach the audience about queerness is not new.

But you need to consider the oh so precious cultural/political context. You see, I'm going to assume, my western reader, you are used to this because western media has dipped its toes on it already. After years of making queer subtext, we have seen explicit queer media in the last 10-5 years? so we are used to it. Hell, some people even prefer media like "Our Flag Means Death" because queerness is alive and present, but it's not as explicit as it could. The words "gay, polycule, lesbians, nb" etc are never said but the characters are loud in their queerness. A lot of people prefer that approach because it voices their feelings without getting...lets call it technical: in both "Our Dreams at Dusk" and "Our Flag Means Death" there are characters with no defined gender identity. they are themselves without any labels.

Japanese media is not new to the subtleness at all. Works like "Requiem of the Rose King" have already proof they have and can do queer media, but for years it has been subtle. No one says "gay, intersex, trans" etc in the manga mentioned and yet readers knew the queer themes explored in the manga. It is just recently that japanese people are being more vocal and have the chance to show queerness in media (I'm aware they have been protesting for years I only mean in media). Media like "Villain", "Our Dreams at Dusk" and "Stars Align" are not explicit because japanese people just got the great idea to talk about it after the west did, it's because being explicit about queerness works in their political and cultural context. From what I've been told, currently most japanese people are accepting but they will ask you to "keep it at home." In a situation like that, no wonder why they are going for more explicit media recently. They don't care western media has been doing so for years now, it is their culture and their fight. There is still subtle japanese queer media (monster 2023 ily) but their creation process does not follow the creative process queer media in the west does.

So back to my questions: What is better, a subtle queer story or a explicit queer story? Why the difference?

The answers are short: both and because they belong to different political and cultural environments. Representation is important, but we need to consider the place it comes from before criticizing it.

What should you choose if you create a queer story? idk, whatever fits you. whatever fits the story you want to tell.

Evren, wait, are you still hung up over Maxine? you can come over and we can chat, my siblings are asleep” and Cypress is genuinely upset and concerned bc he’s seen Evren heartbroken before “Cy, as much as I’d love that, I do need to let some frustrations out”

He calls his band and FaceTime’s them whilst he’s at the studio too—and they all pretty much know about Max and him—but also that when any of them call each other at stupid o’clock it means that there’s a song idea brewing.

Obvs had to name the song after their ship name:

I imagine when he performs this on stage that the fans sing back the bits that are in italics.

And when he has to go on talk shows and social media and promote the song, the question he gets every single time is “who’s the pretty red head?”, and he’ll just genuinely smirk and come up with witty answers like “well, listening to the song won’t be fun if I tell you”

And when nice interviewers ask how he’s doing I imagine him saying, “oh, yeah, I’m okay now. it happened, I wrote a successful song about it, and the good things I said about her are true and that won’t change”

But also him being nervous af to contact Maxine bc she could absolutely hate the song and he’d be ready to apologise for the argument in the first place, but he’d text after a few days like ‘hey, are we good? x’ and then like another one an hour later like ‘by any chance, do you know if your ex hates me??’
