Tribble Month 2023 Day 27: Smart or Dumb

Her cat stared at her.

Lots of cats liked to stare at lots of things, so it took her a while to notice, but hers looked entirely, unblinkingly, solely at her.  Not at toys, or the food dispenser, or the birds hopping around outside; even catnip wouldn’t keep its attention.  Just her.  When she prepped the kitchen for dinner, or repaired the floorboards in her attic, or remembered her oil paints existed for the span of an afternoon, a pair of dark eyes always watched from behind.

Until, one day, they didn’t.

She turned the house upside down, called all her neighbors, stuck posters on every tree and telephone pole.  Nothing.  Nothing, until a few days later, when she dug a folded note out of her windowsill garden, smudged with dirt and pawprints and a messy, impossible Thanks.

Through the open window, she heard the distant bellow of a moose.

way back in like. march?? I took a stab at writing some kind of kabitserye type of story but it was a mess: it kept veering off into murder mystery drama territory because I was reading a lot of murder mystery novels around then and it Wasn't Good because I hadn't tried writing mysteries, let alone murder mysteries, before lmao

I did write a handful of short mystery stories since then, so next year I might take a stab at this idea again now that I'm no longer jumping head first into a genre pool I don't know how to swim in :)
