Diziye başladıktan yaklaşık 1 saat sonra çok net bir şekilde “How to Get Away with Murder” havasını alıyorsunuz... İki dizinin çok ortak noktası ve benzerlikleri olması bu havayı güçlendiriyor. Tabi ki dizilerin birbiri ile alakası yok ama ister istemez benzeştiriyorsunuz. Kore dizilerinin tatlı ilişkileri, tesadüfleri, yanlış anlaşılmaları, küçüklükten tanışıklıkları gibi gibi klişelerin hiç birisi bu dizide yok. Dizinin konusu ve çizgisi tek bir şeye odaklanmış. Bence çok da güzel olmuş. Türkiye’de çok fazla Kore sineması bilinmediği için bizim haberimiz olmamış ama yayınlandığı dönem dünya çapında Netflix listelerinde zirveye yerleşmiş.

“Gerçeğe ve adalete giden yol hukuktan geçer.” Diyerek başlıyor dizimiz. Konusu ise prestijli bir üniversitenin hukuk fakültesindeki öğrencilerinin etrafında dönüyor. Merkezlerinde ise, eski savcı olan üniversite profesörü Yang Jong-Hoon (Kim Myung-Min) bulunuyor. Jong-Hoon öğrencilerine ceza hukuku öğretiyor. Açık sözlü ve sivri dilli olan bu hocamız oldukça kaba olması ile ünlü. Öğrenciler onu sevmeseler bile hem saygı duyuyor hem çekiniyorlar. Hocamızın ise bu durum umurunda değil. Tek amacı adil ve katkı sağlayan insanlar yetiştirip, doğru eğitim ile topluma düzgün hukukçular kazandırmak.

Katıldıkları bir ders sırasında beklenmedik bir şekilde, eski başsavcı olan diğer bir Profesör Seo Byung-Ju (Ahn Nae-Sang) odasında ölü olarak bulunur. Bütün deliler ise Profesör Yang’ı göstermektedir. Cinayeti kimin işlediğini bulmaya çalıştığımız bir hikaye örgüsü içerisinde eş zamanlı anlatılan diğer davalar, insan ilişkileri ve karakterlerin özel hayatları önümüze seriliyor.

Profesör Yang’ın öğrencileri hocalarını aklamaya çalışırken diğer yandan izleyicinin şüphelerini de üstlerine çekiyorlar. İzlerken sürekli katilin kim olduğu ile ilgili kafanız karışıyor. Dizi ile ilgili olumsuz olduğunu düşündüğüm noktalardan biri inanılmaz karışık bir zaman çizelgesi ile başlamış olmasıydı. İzlediğiniz sahnenin hangi zamana ait olduğunu anlamakta zorlan��yorsunuz. Ve bunu ilk bölümlerde kalabalık bir kadroyu tanımaya çalışırken yapıyorsunuz. Çok fazla karakteri bir anda yüklüyorlar. Birkaç bölüm geçip karakterleri tanımaya başladığınızda dizinin içine girebiliyorsunuz. Hukuk terimleri ve davalar için söyleyecek bir sözüm yok, dizinin rengi başından belli olduğu için bundan şikayet etmeye hakkımız olduğunu sanmıyorum. Bu tarz sağlık, hukuk gibi ciddi alanlarda bir şeyler izlemeyi sevmiyorsanız hiç size göre olmayabilir.

Çok fazla oyuncu olduğu için tek tek üzerinden geçmek zaman kaybı olacaktır. Ben izlerken bir tık ön plana çıkan iki kişiden bahsedeyim. İlki; okulda hocalık yapan eski hakim Kim Eun-Suk rolündeki Lee Jung-Eun’du. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Soundtrack 1, Our Blues, Familiar Wife, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo, Fight for My Way, Oh My Ghost ve Mr. Sunshine gibi oldukça başarılı dizilere ismini yazdırmış bir oyuncu kendisi. Kore standartlarına uymayan proporsiyonlarına rağmen oynadığı her rolün altından başarı ile kalktı. Bu dizide de bence göz dolduruyordu. İkinci kişi ise, dizinin baş rolü sayılabilecek bir isim, Kim Beom’du. Tale of the Nine Tailed dizisinin yavru tilkisi bu dizide sınıf birincisi Han Joon-Hwi (Kim Beom) rolündeydi. Ghost Doctor dizisi ile başrolü kaldırabileceğini kanıtlamıştı. 

Konusu, kurgusu ve çekimleri ile çizgisini bozmayan yakışıklı bir dizi yapmışlar. Bir de üzerine oyunculuklarla enfes bir hale getirmişler. Özellikle müziklerini beğendiğim dizi sayısı çok az. Law school müzik konusunda tam bir profesyonellik örneği olabilir. Sahne geçişlerinde, karakterlerin tavan yaptığı noktalarda, duygu değişimlerinde bütün müzikler cuk oturuyordu. Belki sonrasında açıp dinlemek için çok uygun değillerdi ama dizi ile bir bütün hale gelmişti. Bütün sahnenin duygusunu zirveye taşıyordu.

Adalet, rekabet, suç, gizem, azim, hırs ne ararsanız vardı. Tek bir şey eksikti. Bittiğinde nasıl üzüldüm anlatamam. Dizide çift yoktu. Aşk vardı ama hep arka planda kaldı. Bastırıldı, örselendi. Joon-Hwi (Kim Beom)‘nin aşık halleri inanılmaz sevimliydi. Dizi bittiğinde o aşkın devamını görememiş olmak beni çok büyük hayal kırıklığına uğrattı. Birçok dizideki çiftten çok daha mükemmel bir ikili izleyebilirdik.

Kısaca dikkat çeken çalışma grubunun üzerinden de geçeyim. Kang Sol A(Ryoo Hye-Young), bölüme zar zor girmiş fakir bir aileden gelen en normal karakterdir. Diğerlerine yetişmek için ekstra ekstra çabalamak zorundadır. Kang Sol B(Lee Soo-Kyung) ise aynı isme sahip tam tersi bir karakterdir. Hırslı, yüksek notlar alan ve zengin bir aileden gelen soğuk bir kızdır. Seo Ji-Ho(David Lee), hep yavru köpek gibi üzgün bakışları olan sürekli bir şeylere canı sıkkınmış gibi dolaşan kendi halinde bir çocuktur. Jeon Ye-Seul (Ko Yoon-Jung) ortalama bir öğrencidir. Güzelliği ile ön plandadır. Yoo Seung-Jae(Hyun Woo) öğrenciden çok öğretim görevlisi gibi görünen aklı başında ağır başlı bir karakterdir. Min Bok-Ki(Lee Kang-Ji) çalışma grubunun maskotu gibidir. Hareketli eğlenceli bir öğrencidir. Jo Ye-Beom(Kim Min-Seok) öğretmenlerin gözüne girmeye çalışan ama onu sivriltecek bir özelliği olmayan silik bir karakterdir.

Ve kötü karakterlerden biri olan savcı Jin Hyeong-U (Park Hyuk-Kwon) oyunculuk anlamında göz dolduran bir diğer isimdi. Dikkat çeken 2 isim var demiştim ama dizi birçok iyi oyuncuya ev sahipliği yapmayı başarmış görünüyor. Park Hyuk-Kwon’u birçok dizide yan rollerde izledik. Something in the Rain, Where Stars Land ve en son Reborn Rich dizileri bunlardan sadece birkaçı.

Sonuç olarak, dizi beni tatmin etti. Çok keyif alarak merakla izledim. Bu tarz dizilerden sıkılmıyorsanız kesinlikle izlemelisiniz.

dong gu, welcome to waikiki. he's probably my favorite male lead lmao. he's such a mess and so, so petty but i've got a weakness for grumpy dudes who are secretly soft and i think he's a good example of that trope executed well

kimura shunji, bridal mask/gaksital. LMAO favorite =/= endorsement, but he's my personal favorite villain/antagonist in a kdrama. his arc is just so well-executed and grim and park ki woong totally crushed it

The King’s Affection

Watched on Netflix. Rating: 10/10

I had to take a brief break while watching this drama because it was exciting and dramatic and I was neck-deep in a stressful semester of grad school. Still: in a year where I struggled to finish any piece of media and feel invested in anything, I was on the edge of my seat with this drama. I laughed, I cried, I gasped. This may not be my favorite drama ever but it’s my favorite 2021 drama: both one that aired in 2021 and that I watched in 2021.

I was into historical dramas in 2021:but in this historical drama, the crown prince’s twin sister has to take on the identity of her brother, the crown prince, when he dies. Secret identity stuff and cross-dressing are already fun, but to make it more intense, if the female lead’s secret is found out, she would be killed by her super evil grandfather. Park Eun-Bin was incredible playing the female lead, Hwi/Dami. She did a great job at embodying the identity of the crown prince and also making me feel her anguish over all the dramatic crap that happened to her that she didn’t deserve. I hadn’t watched Rowoon in a drama before, but he played probably my favorite kdrama male lead of all time. He’s clever but also a himbo (imo), kind, gentle, understanding, funny, absolutely smitten by the female lead, and tall—I’m a little in love with this character, shut up. I loved the male lead’s Mulan-esque bi panic (banic, if you will) because it wasn’t really a bi panic: the problem was that he fell in love with the crown prince, of all people. I found the political intrigue gripping and the romance was a good mix of happiness and sadness to pair with the already-compelling concept. I told all my friends about this drama, and now I’m telling you too.

Extraordinary you

Watched on Viki. Rating: 7/10

I watched this 2019 drama while I was waiting for episodes of the King’s Affection to come out because Rowoon is also the male lead here. Verdict: yep, Rowoon is dreamy in this, too. This drama is about a high school romance comic in which the characters become aware that they’re characters and try to change their fate as written by the writer. It’s a really cool concept, and overall, I pretty much enjoyed it. Like a lot of dramas, I was gripped by the first half of the drama and then started losing interest or just didn’t feel as invested as it went on. The setup, reveal, and the two leads meeting and growing closer--that was all really great. It takes several episodes for the female lead, Dan Oh, to meet Rowoon’s character and that build-up is exciting. The middle and ending were kind of “meh” for me. I still enjoyed the drama and finished it, I just think possibly it could have been shorter. A lot of the dramas I have watched have a great setup and then fall into “oh no the male lead is in danger. Now they’re ok. Oh no now the female lead is in danger!” back and forth to kind of create this push and pull plot where not a lot happens. That happened a little here, but not enough to make me stop watching. I rarely want the secondary characters to be explored or explained more than they are. In this drama, I wanted more layers in some of the other characters and how they related to their comic world.

Hometown cha cha cha

Watched on Netflix. Rating: 10/10

It took me longer than it should have to finish watching this drama—right when I was about to watch the last episode, some yikes news broke about the lead actor. Regardless, separating the actors from the art, this is one of my favorite dramas now. To my American @ss, this drama’s plot is basically just a Hallmark movie (others on tumblr have said this too, but it bears repeating): a rich well-off women from the big city moves to a charming small town with a lovable cast of characters, and a jack of all trades guy who knows the true meaning of life (not Christmas) helps the female lead unwind and get back in touch with what matters. That alone would be a fun ride, although pretty predictable. Hometown is so much more: the two lead characters have layers and are both good people with some deep emotional obstacles they have to overcome to be together. This drama is surprisingly heart-wrenching as you get to know the characters more. The second to last episode made me cry like a little bitch. The found family of the town made me cry in a good way. Hye-jin and Duk-sik are each other’s manic pixie dream significant other, and we love that for them. The only thing that I don’t like about this drama (although I accept it), is that there’s a restaurant lady who should have gotten together with the pretty teacher who has a crush on her. Instead of a wlw couple, we have a realistic and frustrating and touching side story about a heterosexual divorced couple. Whatever, fine, I guess. This is still one of my favorite dramas.

Lovers of the red sky

Watched on Viki. Rating: 5/10

This should probably have a lower rating. This is a drama with a beginning and setup I LOVED but then could hardly keep watching as it completely lost its way halfway or two-thirds through. The plot is bananas but basically: in this historical fantasy drama, we have two destined lovers, who are both blind but at alternating times in their life. They meet as children and fall in love, the girl is blind, the boy is not. The boy is sacrificed in a ritual to save the country from the curse of this god of evil/blight. The boy then becomes that god’s vessel, he becomes blind, the girl gains the god’s eyes and she can see now through the intervention of a good goddess. The girl goes on to become a divine royal painter: the evil god can only be truly captured and banished if he is trapped in a painting of the previous king by the court’s divine painter. The girl and boy are separated but then meet again as adults, and the magical friction causes the boy to sometimes become possessed by an evil demon that wants the girl’s eyes while they’re reconnecting/falling in love again. 

The drama is really great up to the end of the painting contest plotline—it’s beautiful, dramatic, fantastic, and seems touching if a little cheesy. After that point, it’s just the same point of conflict over and over. Oh no, we have to paint the divine painting. Oh no, something went wrong and the hot guy is still possessed and trying to kill the female lead when he goes into demonic fits! There’s an evil prince who lusts after the demon and a good prince who is in love with the female painter. I found them pretty boring. I gritted my teeth and forced myself to finish the drama. The ending is pretty sweet actually. I mean, they better give us a happy ending after forcing us to watch the same conflict/plotline three times (or was it four times?). Such a disappointment. Very beautiful though.

Flower of evil

Watched on Viki. Rating: 9/10

This is a 2020 drama, it just took me a while to finally get around to it. This should probably be a 10/10 drama for quality, it’s really good, it’s just not my usual type. This is a crime thriller with some romance: the complicated romance is what kept me hooked because I don’t usually go for crime thrillers. The setup is that a homicide detective finds out that her husband has been living with a false identity since she first met him. He is a suspected accomplice to a serial murderer from an old case before their marriage. The drama unfolds: is the husband a serial murderer? Is he killing again? Is she one of his targets? The wife detective and husband characters are extremely well-written, layered, and compelling. The action and identity stuff in this drama is gripping and kept me on the edge of my seat. Would recommend!

My roommate is a gumiho

Watched on Viki. Rating: 7.5 or 8/10

I thoroughly enjoyed this drama and thought it was fun, but honestly, there were some parts to it that I thought were dumb, haha. The plot is that an almost 1000-year-old fox spirit needs to collect human energy in his bead in order to become human. If he doesn’t by the time he turns 1000 years old, he dies. Yet! One day his bead accidentally pops out of him and goes into a modern-day college student (the female lead). While trying to figure out how to get his bead back, the fox spirit asks the female lead to be his roommate so he can keep an eye on her and his bead. The best parts of this drama are the comedy. The first few episodes are really strong and really funny. This drama goes into my favorites pile because of a few particular scenes, including an iconic moment when the female lead calls the second male lead to get help unplugging the first male lead’s toilet. 

When the romance and the next few plot lines really got going, that’s when the drama started to not feel as fun and fresh for me. The second male lead is just annoying and he’s way too present in the main plotline/takes up too much screen time. I still would recommend this drama, especially to anyone who enjoys fantasy romance like me. It’s fun and I absolutely love the female lead. Lee Dam (Hyeri) managed to be super charming, strong, but also realistic. She seemed like a silly college student at some times (who I’d want to be friends with no joke) but also navigated a relationship with a 900+ year old magical creature smartly: she had realistic morals, insecurities, and established her boundaries and communicated throughout the drama. A+ romantic heroine in my opinion. Also, the side characters are super cute and I was just as invested in them as the main couple. Yeah, thinking back, some of the main plotline drama and the really frustrating/kind of boring second male lead are what lower this drama’s rating for me. Everything else was a great time. I kind of miss this drama? Maybe I need to rewatch it?

Are you human too?

I wrote a longer review (rant) of this drama in another post, in which I collected all three of the robot dramas I’ve watched together in one pile. This drama was okay—not great. In this robot drama, the robot is created by a genius scientist who is separated from her son by her husband’s ultra-rich family. The grandpa wants an heir who is completely under his thumb. The mom creates the robot to help her manage her grief at this separation. Yet, when the son is in an accident (coma trope alert), the mom and the son’s best friend/secretary scramble to make sure he doesn’t lose his place and fortune in the family. The robot takes the son’s place in secret, right around the same time the female lead becomes the rich son’s bodyguard. This drama is dumb. It’s not horrible. Kind of grating, annoying. There seems to be little real science with the robot and I found even the fantastic, leave-your-ethics-at-the-door romance silly too. The character who is most developed and interesting is the rich human son, who is portrayed as a cartoon villain at points. Every other character could be interesting but were not written well to their potential. The female lead isn’t a good bodyguard and doesn’t seem like a good person, although I think she’s meant to be? I mainly watched this whole thing because the main character, the robot, is played by a handsome actor and is a cute character. Also, the episodes were short. I wouldn’t recommend this drama unless you’re really into robot stories (although not realistic ones) or are a fan of the lead actor.

Crash landing on you

Watched on Netflix. Rating: 8/10 (due to genre preference)

To everyone who is into kdramas, this drama is old news, but I still feel like I’m catching up on getting into kdramas. This is a really great drama from 2019 that I never finished. I’m still at episode 13/19. A rich heiress from South Korea lands in North Korea during a freak paragliding accident. With the help of a band of North Korean soldiers she befriends, the heiress has to find a way back home without being captured by the North Korean authorities.

The romance in this drama is excellent and I love the cast of characters/found family. The moments of comedy are great, the dramatic moments make me cover my mouth with my hand and gasp (always a good sign), and I can sense that the ending will put me through an emotional wringer. It’s just hard for me to get through--I think that the genre of this drama is not really my cup of tea? I will finish this drama one day, when I’m in the right mood.

Doom at your service

Watched on Viki. Rating: I don’t even know.

By the end of 2021, I was STILL watching this drama, even though I started watching it (and I think it aired in) the summer/late fall? I finished it in January but only by gritting my teeth and forcing myself to. The main plotline has an 8 rating from me. There’s a lot in the fantasy and world building that’s unexplained but essentially: in modern South Korea, there are two gods. One is the gardener, who seems like a more traditional “god” (goddess) who takes care of humans. The other god is Doom: he brings destruction, unhappiness, doom to humanity. Doom is your typical tortured tall handsome bad boy type except powered up to the extreme (because he’s a god/spirit). Doom despises humanity and so when a cancer patient wishes doom on the world in a moment of despair, he leaps at the chance. He can’t destroy humanity himself but he is allowed to grant human wishes. The female lead is the cancer patient: Tak Dong Kyung is played by Park Bo Young, one of my favorite Korean actresses and the reason I picked up this show. When she realizes what’s happening, Dong Kyung and Doom arrange a contract (this is kind of a contrived plotline but it’s fun): if she dies, Doom will unleash doom on the world. However, Dong Kyung can live and be healed by Doom if she instead allows the person she loves most to die in her place. 

When they set this up, Dong Kyung decides to fall in love with Doom so she can get rid of him. But she’s in an enemies-to-lovers fantasy tragic drama so uh that’s not going to go her way in the end. The main plotline is, yes, a little contrived in my opinion but the high stakes, drama, and emotion are great. There’s a lot of emotion in Dong Kyung and her family coming to terms with her terminal illness. There’s a lot of heart in the family and relationships, and this drama is way warmer and more touching than the main concept would have you think. However, this drama has the absolute dumbest secondary romance plotline I’ve seen. Dong Kyung’s best friend (who is charming in the main plotline scenes) is in a love triangle with two handsome and boring men and this takes up a lot of show time. The secondary love triangle was extremely painful to watch and the main reason why this show felt like a slog. What were the writers thinking? Why was the secondary love triangle never somehow meaningfully connected to the main plot? I’m still so confused by this.

Mr Queen

  Watched on Viki. Rating: 9/10

In this drama, an egocentric male chef from modern Korea bumps his head and wakes up in the body of a Joseon-era queen. This somehow is exactly what the political intrigue and court shenanigans of the Joseon court needed to right wrongs and bring retribution against the corrupt people in power. This drama is hilarious and exciting and the lead actress, Shin Hye Sun, deserves so many awards. I think I’m a sucker for historical dramas that have some sort of identity or gender-crossing plot (lucky for me that there are so many of them). I’m also a sucker for the modern-person-falls-back-in-time trope.

I love everything about this drama except 1. There were some parts in the middle that felt slow, and 2. The ending could have been set up better. I saw people online get mad at the ending, but I wasn’t surprised. I never expected this to be an out and proud mlm pairing. I enjoyed and was surprised by the bi/gay/gender stuff that did exist in the drama. The ending didn’t break my love for the drama overall.

Bonus not-Korean Asian dramas:

A Man Who Defies the World of BL

Watched on Viki. Rating: 9/10

This Japanese drama is short and sweet, an homage and parody of BL tropes. I haven’t watched a lot of BLs, although I have friends who are into them. I still found this drama hilarious, despite not knowing as much as the intended audience probably should. The ending is sweet, and it’s a short but fun ride!

Triad Princess

Watched on Netflix. Rating: 8.5-ish/10

This is a 2019 Taiwanese show, but I watched it on a whim this year. The daughter of a powerful mafia boss secretly gets a job as a bodyguard so that she can be close to an actor she’s a fan of. Honestly, I don’t have much to say about Triad Princess except that this was fun! It delivered what it promised and was a cute romance with a badass female lead. I don’t think this had a clear ending, so I’m waiting in hope for season 2.

K-Drama Roundup of the Year

Hey guys! I hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas. I was very invested in dramas at the start of the year, before completely falling out of them after my mum got rid of her Netflix membership and I moved back to uni. But the little I finished was very good and I’m here to talk about it.

Run On

I honestly thought I’d never watch a fluffy rom-com again, but Run On was impossible to put down. I love shows that love their supporting cast, and Run On had love in abundance - maybe even too much love - for all its characters. The supporting characters had lives outside of the main romantic relationships, and this led to an experience that felt fuller and richer because its non-romantic relationships weren’t put there with the ulterior motive of getting two people together. I felt like the writer was drawing this great big beautiful web of human connection. Also I have never seen an actor relish a role like Sooyoung as Dan-oh, and I ate it up.

Mad for Each Other

Mad for Each Other is the only drama that had my sides bursting over a juvenile poop joke, since the way it was executed was so perfectly contrived and stupidly well-acted. The show is just much funnier than it has any right to be. Baek Ji-won throws herself into her ahjumma role with wonderful self-abandon and Gil Hae-yeon is just so brilliant as Min-kyung’s mum that I wished the show was about her instead. In hindsight, Hwi-oh is such a fantasy man it almost breaks the show’s reality. Remove his anger issues, and he’s literally perfect. And the ending was...fatigued. I’m not the right person to speak on its depiction of mental health, so I’ll leave that discussion to people better equipped.

Mine

I’ve heard that Mine’s second half is better than its first, which gives me hope. I liked the first half a lot, but more for its potential than what it was actually doing. Kim Seo-hyung was radiant, but everything else was only glimmers of something good. The only thing that flat out sucked was the romance between Cha Hakyeon and the maid, which was trite and underwritten (the messy relationship between Hye-jin and Ji-yong was enough to show the problems with young women getting involved with rich men, we didn’t need a Cinderella story on top of it). I fell off the show, but I’m willing to re-enter its opulent, over-dressed world and give it a second chance.

Once Again

I really regret being so weak to cringe. Something happens halfway through Once Again that’s so cringy I dropped the show. Which is a pity, because I was having so much fun! Once Again is just so gosh-darn lovable, and is probably the only family drama to not violently trigger me. This is a show to watch for the veteran actresses - Baek Ji-won is an obstinately girly ahjumma and Lee Jung-eun is a woman whose self-confidence left me starstruck. Both are also romantic rivals and between themselves, they chew so much scenery there’s nothing left for anyone else. It’s glorious. And Kim Bo-yeon plays a very messy rich widow in this - a character you hate, then love, because she’s just very lonely and her sons have their lives to live. It’s my favourite perfomance in the whole thing and I thing I’ve talked myself into watching the show again (bonus points for Lee Sang-yi, who is such a cutie). 

Children of Nobody

This was my last drama of the year, and wow, what a way to end it. I don’t hear a ton about Kim Sun-ah, which baffles me because she’s so good. This is really her show and she plays Woo-kyung with steely determination. I have never seen someone be gaslit so thoroughly and still straighten her back and barrel on, even as everyone (myself included) doubts her intuition. This was a hard show to watch at times (the depiction of child abuse isn’t sensationalised, which made it more painful), but its compassion towards its subject matter made it all worthwhile. As a murder mystery, it’s solid, but the real pull here is watching one woman work through her trauma while saving the kids around her. Cha Hak-yeon’s performance here is stellar, and I love Lee Yi-kyung the comedic actor, but I love Lee Yi-kyung the dramatic actor. More serious roles for him please.

Coffee Prince/Secret Love Affair

Both these shows were so ahead of their time that they’re still ahead of their time. Coffee Prince has a shoujo-esque premise that’s really just a jumping point for some great filmmaking that still feels fresh. I will finish the show, but the characters are hurting right now and their hurt is my hurt. I’m just taking it thirty minutes at a time. As for Secret Love Affair, I was so impressed with how, by some kind of magic trickery, it drew out this painful story about a woman’s mid-life crisis from its corporate shenanigans. Kim Hee-Ae and Yoo Ah-in have the chemistry that makes a strong argument for the kind of relationship that they portray. And to the show’s credit, the scandal of the relationship isn’t something it tackily waves around all over the place. Right now, there’s been a lull in the story (corporate shenanigans ugh), so I’m taking my time. But I will be back.

Bonus

Can’t talk about 2021 without talking about Squid Game. I watched it. It was fine. It peaked at episode 2, which was brilliant, and never got that shine back. I wasn’t blown away by its commentary on class, since K-dramas are physically incapable of not talking about class. But it was nice to see a class-conscious drama blow up to such a global scale, even if the hype, like most things, was temporary. 

And that’s pretty much it for the year. It’s not a lot, and there’s still more I plan to watch from this year (Inspector Koo, for one). I’m looking towards the new year with more exhaustion than anything, but I hope 2022 is a great year for all of us. Happy New Year!

Reseña de Hwayugi / A Korean Odyssey (2018)

SINOPSIS

Es una versión moderna de la novela clásica china llamada "Journey to the West". La historia muestra la vida de Jin Seon Mi AKA Sam Jang (Oh Yeon Seo) que tiene la habilidad de ver fantasmas y quien por cosas del destino, en su infancia se cruza con Woo Hwi Chul AKA Ma Wang (Cha Seung Won), el Rey Demonio, un extraño ser que le pide un favor; mientras Seon Mi realiza el favor conoce a Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi), el Rey Mono, otro extraño ser que termina engañándola. Debido a este incidente Seon Mi sufre muchos problemas. Cuando es adulta, vuelve a encontrarse con Woo Hwi Chul y Son Oh Gong, lo que provoca que las vidas de todos se compliquen.

A Korean Odyssey (AKA Hwayugi) me llamó la atención mucho antes de leer la sinopsis o siquiera conocer a Lee Seung Gi, el título, me parecía muy interesante pero por alguna razón que no recuerdo, no me animé a verlo creyendo que no me gustaría. Ese fue otro de mis grandes errores como doramaniaca. Lo empecé a ver a principios de octubre y déjenme decirles que el timing que elegí fue PERFECTO, pues pese a no pertenecer al género del terror, sí pertenece al de fantasía, por lo que hay seres sobrenaturales como dioses, demonios y fantasmas (claro que nada aterrador). Por lo que lo amé desde el primer capítulo.

Primero hablemos de Lee Seung Gi porque él y su personaje merece un párrafo exclusivamente para él. A Korean Odyssey (AKA Hwayugi) fue el primer kdrama que filmó después de haber finalizado su servicio militar en el 2017 y… algo le hizo el servicio militar, ¡algo! Lee Seung Gi pre military service es guapo y cute pero Lee Seung Gi post military service es cute, sexy af y masculino, muy masculino (ni siquiera sabía que me gustaban los hombres masculinos hasta que empecé a leer y ver más videos del actor). Cuando vean el primer capítulo de Hwayugi, sabrán de lo que hablo, se enamorarán al instante.

Son Oh Gong, el personaje protagonista interpretado por Lee Seung Gi tiene una personalidad fuerte, muy fuerte, es impulsivo y realmente puede golpear. Si hay una escena con Son Oh Gong en él pueden esperarse de todo, especialmente en las escenas de besos ;) su personaje sí que sabe como disfrutar de los placeres carnales.

Respecto a Jin Seon Mi, su personaje de niña me enamoró; sin embargo, me tomó un poco más de tiempo amar a su personaje de adulta. Quizá no me gustó la manera de actuar de la protagonista o que el personaje al principio no tenía mucha personalidad más allá de ver espíritus; no obstante mejora con el pasar de los capítulos (eso o te acostumbras jeje).

El personaje de Ma Wang, interpretado por Cha Seung Won, es otro que me gustó por todo el amor y respeto que guardaba hacia su amada. Al principio creí que él era el antagonista, luego creí que él y Son Oh Gong eran los malos, después entendí que en esta historia no hay buenos ni malos; solo seres humanos y mágicos coexistiendo y luchando contra lo que ellos creen que esta mal.

Mención honorífica a los personajes de Jin Bu Ja (Lee Se Young, síp, la misma actriz que actuó en Doctor John) y P.K. AKA Jeo Pal Gye (Lee Hong Ki). Sus personajes, tanto individuales como pareja me encantaron. Amé el concepto propio de Zombie que crearon y el amor que P.K. tenía por Bu Ja. Lindo y desgarrador.

Lo único que no me gustó de la historia (pero que luego sí haha) fue la incorporación del brazalete. Despees del capítulo 3 empecé a dudar de que hubiera un correcto desarrollo de la historia de amor entre los personajes principales. Eso es lo que detesto en los kdramas de fantasía, muchos de ellos no saben desarrollar el amor entre la pareja principal.

Dije que al principio odié el concepto de enamoramiento causado por un brazalete, pero llegando al capítulo final todo tuvo sentido y me gustó porque realmente me desgarró el corazón… y para mí, el capítulo final fue muy triste, más triste que el de Goblin (síp, lo dije). Literal, el último capítulo es un martirio recordándote que Bu Ja y Jin Seon Mi murieron, que muchos murieron y que ya nada es igual :,( fue muy triste.

I am a huge fan of historical Dramas. But I believe it is rather hard to find one that fits your watchlist. There are political dramas, romantic comedies and Dramas based on true Stories. Whether you like classic KDrama Plotlines or not so typically Stories I am sure you will find something on this list.

- The Last Empress [황후의 품격] // 2018 by Joo Dong-Min

A Drama that plays in our period of time but can nonetheless be called a history drama. It displays how a monarchy would function in modern South Korea. The Story is about an unsuccessful and naive musical actress who marries the Emperor of the Korean Empire. Her character seems clumsy and featherbrained but being the main act in this drama her role is bond to change. This series starts of rather light and comedic however it'll change in later episodes as the Plot develops into an investigation storyline.

- The Tale of Nokdu [조선로코 - 녹두전] // 2019 by Kim Dong-Hwi

This Drama plays in the Joseon Dynasty and tells the story about Nokdu, a young man who wants to find the truth about his birth. On his way he disguises himself as a woman in order to enter a widow village where the answers to his questions lie. Given that this Story is a romantic comedy we also have our female lead character, a young woman living in a Kisaeng house next to the widow village. As the Plot develops, more and more interesting characters are introduced but the storyline lacks cliffhangers and overall interesting turning points. Nonetheless it's a light and fun to watch Drama.

- My Country: The new Age [나의 나라] // 2019 by Kim Jin-Won

This is by far my favorite History Drama. The story revolves around two good friends but their different ranks in society leads them on two different paths. It's a story about a big revolution but it isn't the outcome that is important. This Plot has everything: Epic fighting scenes, an unbreakable friendship, an interesting plot with excellent cliffhangers and unpredictable turning points. All characters are unique and have their own plotlines which makes you even more anticipated to watch. The lead actors are well known figures and fit the two main characters perfectly.

- Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung [신입사관 구해령] // 2019 by Kang Il-Soo & Han Hyun-Hee

A romantic drama about a rookie historian and an abandoned prince who secretly works as an author of love novels. Although it doesn't start of very interesting the many small plotlines lining to an connected end make it worth to watch till the last episode. Fans of Astro will definitely have a joy watching this cute drama, with Cha Eun-Woo as the main lead and adorable clumsy prince. But also the historical background is rather interesting as we don't see this kind of topic often. After all it's more a romantic comedy than epic story but still entertaining to watch.

- The King: Eternal Monarch [더 킹: 영원의 군자] // 2020 by Baek Sang-Hoon, Jung Ji-Hyun & Yoo Je-Won

Another modern monarchy story taking place in two parallel worlds which gives this drama fantasy vibes. The drama tells the story of detective Jeong Tae-Eul and the Emperor Lee Gon who meet each other under very interesting circumstances. Because this story takes places in different times and worlds it comes across confusing in the beginning but the heartwarming characters and love story make up for this. This drama has beautiful cinematics and interesting plot twists not to mention great actors like Lee Min-Ho and Woo Do-Hwan. In the end it's a classic romantic love Drama and less a historical piece.

Hymne of Death is based on a true story and takes place in 1920, when Korea was under Japanese Occupation. The Drama tells the tragic love story of Soprano Yun Sim-Deok and playwright Kim Woo-Jin. Going as far as calling it the Korean Romeo and Juliet this short Story is full of dramatic plotting and beautiful poetic scenes. The historical part doesn't come to short and shows us Korea in periods of change but also the harsh reality of the Japanese invasion.
