CXS was so badass in these two episodes. that really took what we all thought of him in the first few episodes (shitty impulse control, can't see past the end of his nose) and flipped it on its head. god that was so cool. oh my god.

Fry’s Cuts

Submission for the Glader Cup 2022, Day 3 Frypan's Kitchen.

What does Frypan do when Chuck and Thomas (those idiots) have yet again managed to bring the millstone to a creaking halt for the day, and the Safe Haven’s chances for getting fresh bread are cut to an abrupt zero? That’s right, he resorts to his usual solution for that particular problem (yes thanks for asking, this isn’t the first time he’s had to do this): Fry’s Cuts [1].

So gather your old bread, take a tour over to the chicken den for some eggs, coax Newt into plucking you some apples, milk your cow (or let Gally do it for you just to annoy him) (say it’s “urgent”), pester Minho for some of the sugar rations, fetch Teresa to give you a helping hand, and you’re good to go!

Old bread (about 8 slices) (do use old bread, it’ll soak up everything way better than fresh bread)

Milk (0.2-0.3L)

Eggs (2)

Butter (to Fry with) (hehe)

Apples (2-3)

Sugar (as much as you want)

Cinnamon (same as above)

Cut the apples and remove the cores, peel if you want to. Put them in a pan with a bit of water and sugar (ca. 0.5 tablespoons), cook on low heat until they grow soft and mushy (10-15 mins).

Break the eggs and put them onto a plate or similar. Make a frying pan with butter ready. Heat the milk (careful, don’t let it burn). Put the first batch of bread cuts in there, soak them a bit. Take them out and turn them around in the eggs, then fry inside the pan with melted butter. Lather rinse repeat until you’re through with all of the bread.

Serve the cuts with sugar and cinnamon on top, applesauce on the side. (Especially good if the cuts are still warm). Enjoy!

They formed when they were young children, so different and yet so much the same. Logan remembered when they were children, so innocent and naive, unaware of the wars around them and not yet understanding of what would happen later. They were simply two children in glasses, reading in their library.

Class Feature Friday: Enhancement Subschool (Wizard Transmutation Subschool)

While transmutation can be used for a lot of things, one of it’s more subtle, but no less practical, uses, is the tendency to use it to bolster that which already exists. Admittedly, transmutation already simply alters things, but I am referring to less drastic changes.

Indeed, many of these spell may cause very little physical changes at all to their target, living or not. Anything from bolstering the physique or mind of the target, altering a metal object to be perfectly polished for use as a mirror, hardening brittle weapons, altering the physical age of a target, accelerate the effects of a poison, harden cloth into effective protection or weaponry, accelerate the flow of time for a subject, adding magical effects to weapons, grant magical adaptation to another plane of reality, and so on.

The exact limits of what spells belong in this category vary from person to person, but in general, these spells are not overt transformations, and bolster the target in some way.

The transmuters that specialize in this sort of magic are often called enhancers, and can find work almost anywhere, since they can bolster the might of armies and workers alike. However, I imagine that they are frowned upon in the world of professional athletics and sports, for obvious reasons. They can even find work in architecture, with higher-level enhancers able to permanently increase the durability of objects, including structures.

 While these mages do retain the core school’s modular physical enhancement that can change from day to day, they also learn how to imbue enhancements on others with a touch, bolstering their mental or physical abilities, or else toughening their skin, hardening it against attack. As they grow in power, so too does the degree of enhancement.

At greater degrees of mastery, they can also briefly attain surges of even greater physical perfection, surging with strength, agility, or heartiness for a few seconds, just enough to use for a few brief moments before fading.

Interested in using your spells primarily for buffing? This particular school and subschool may be what you’re after. While support spells are your bread and butter, like all wizards you should diversify and plan carefully for what is coming up. Also, don’t pick your buffing spells carelessly. Consider the party’s makeup and prepare buffs that are useful to the group, and make sure to double check which spells are self-only. Speaking of self, remember how these transmuters can buff their own stats up in various ways, particularly physical stats. You can really catch a foe off guard if they underestimate what you can do just because you are a casting class.

 Exactly what is it that makes a person choose to specialize in enhancement though? Some may be seeking the limits of mortal perfection, like an ascetic but with arcane magic. Others might see the potential for greatness in all things, seeking to bring it out the best in everyone. Others may be arcane craftsfolk, and see enhancement as a natural focus for their craft. The possibilities are out there.

  None now know what the exact cause of the wyvaran degeneration was, whether it was biological or merely cultural, but the fact remains that their civilization collapsed. Convinced that his people lost some natural trait that led to their downfall, Ogan Firetongue is determined to breathe new life into wyvaran civilization with arcane magic, but as his obsession grows, his methods warp.

 The party happens across a goblin tribe. Normally, this wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, but this batch apparently has gained access to potions that bolster them in various ways. The big mystery being that these potions were actually meant for the goblins, an experiment by a cunning bugbear wizard seeking a spell to make himself utterly unstoppable when stalking prey. If not stopped, he will eventually undergo a ritual transformation into an implacable stalker.

 With a sudden ripple of unseen muscle, the party watches as the old woman they met at the tavern knocked a belligerent drunk on their ass. However, the woman is no martial artist, but a retired wizard! Learning from her will provide great insight into transmutation magic, but the biggest question is her history.

Another Sneak Attack on Science (With Monsanto’s Fingerprints?) –Protect Independent Government Evaluation of Pesticide Hazards

(Beyond Pesticides, July 2, 2018) The U.S. House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill that includes “report language” that would restrict independent evaluation of pesticide hazards by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report language, as part of the U.S. House of Representatives Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies FY2019 Appropriations Bill, directs ATSDR to “focus on its core mission of assessing hazardous exposures and working with communities, if requested, near toxic waste sites and not agricultural operations” [emphasis added]. As some may recall from “The Monsanto Papers,” Monsanto pushed to stop ATSDR from researching the cancer-causing properties of its herbicide Roundup/glyphosate. [Unsealed internal Monsanto documents from a federal lawsuit, dubbed “The Monsanto Papers,” showed evidence of questionable research practices by the company, inappropriate ties to a top EPA official, and possible “ghostwriting” of purportedly “independent” research studies.] There is also a significant cut to the budget. The Senate Appropriations Committee does not include the same restrictive language. Tell your U.S. Senators and Representative to reject language, attached to the House appropriations bill, that prohibits independent evaluation of agricultural chemical hazards by the government’s research agency (ATSDR). Americans would do well to look to South Korea for an example of how to contain and possibly defeat the fast-spreading coronavirus.After days of indecision in which President Moon Jae-in and his aides could not believe how quickly the disease was spreading from China, they woke up to the danger and instituted one of the most effective systems anywhere.South Korea’s Creepy Coronavirus Cellphone Alerts are Useful, But They May Be TMIIn one remarkable innovation, drive-by centers test those with symptoms without asking them to leave their vehicles. A quick temperature check, a rub inside the mouth and maybe the nose with a cotton swab, and it’s all over until the results are known a few hours later.Dr. Ogan Gurel, who got his medical degree from Columbia in New York and moved to Seoul 10 years ago, cites drive-by testing as one of “a panoply of measures” designed to stop the virus from overwhelming this country of 51 million people.“There is no silver bullet,” says Gurel, who teaches medicine and provides scientific advice. “Individually, people might suffer, but in aggregate they end up with qualitative stabilization.” That is to say, for the overall population the disease is brought under control.The proof is in the numbers showing new cases in South Korea decreasing steadily–just 110 on Thursday, the lowest in more than two weeks, while 177 were declared cured and sent home. All told, the number of cases totals 7,979, but the general feeling sense is the worst is over.“Korea is setting a good example for the U.S.,” said Jang Sung-eun, who still rides the subways to work every day while many of her colleagues try to work from home. “They say we Koreans are rather effective in dealing with the problem.”Such guarded optimism reflects a discernible shift in national mood from the near-panic that engulfed the country after the virus was discovered to be emanating from a church in the city of Daegu, 170 miles southeast of Seoul. The church was one of dozens run by the secretive Shincheonji sect, whose leader, Lee Man-hee, has proclaimed himself the embodiment of Jesus Christ.“There was some resistance among them to testing,” says Gurel, but by now almost all the sect’s 230,000 members have been checked. Most of those suffering from the disease were members of the church or caught the virus from members who may have passed it on through two or three others, who in turn transmitted it to still more contacts.Korean self-discipline and community cohesiveness explain much of the success in coming to terms with an illness that remains almost out of control elsewhere.“The rate of new cases is tapering much more than in Italy, Iran or the U.S.,” says Gurel. “They’ve been taking measures that are quite constructive. They’ve been isolating cluster areas but not in a totalitarian way.”Quite aside from the availability of quick, no-cost testing, Dr. Gurel cites the discipline of Koreans in heeding advice of all sorts. “There is a constant message about social hygiene,” he says. Avoidance of public spaces, frequent hand-washing, all that “eventually improved the situation.”Kim Ganglip, vice health minister, outlined the philosophy behind the campaign to halt the spread of the disease.“We consider two core values to be important,” he told journalists in Seoul. “First is that public participation must be secured through openness and transparency. Second is to respect creative thinking and use cutting-edge technology to develop the most effective means of response.” On that basis, he said, “the government is working on various ways to ensure that the information that citizens need to stay safe includes detailed explanations.”Once a patient is confirmed to have the disease, the words “emergency alert” on mobile phones show his or her “travel history,” said Kim. “The more transparently and quickly accurate information is provided, the more the people will trust the government.” If that approach seemed like an intrusion on privacy, Kim adopts that same argument in debunking what he called “the traditional response to an outbreak of contagious disease” that involved “locking down afflicted areas and isolating infected victims.” That approach, he said, has had only “modest effectiveness” while appearing “close-minded, coercive, and inflexible.” In fact, he said, “We have experienced harmful consequences with democracy being undermined and active public participation in the process being reduced.” As a democratic country and a pluralistic society, said Kim, “we must transcend the limitations of the conventional approach to fighting infectious diseases.” But how can South Korea manage to pull off the trick of sticking to democratic principles while trying to tell people what to do and how to behave? The answer, some believe, lies in Korea’s military history. “Having the large military and needing to remain in constant readiness for an outbreak of war is probably helpful,” says Steve Tharp, a retired U.S. army officer who’s lived on the peninsula for decades. ”The government was also able to quickly pull assets from the military, such as nurses and others, to assist in the effort. We see pictures of soldiers walking around in hazmat suits spraying different locations.” Then too, Tharp notes, geography helps. “South Korea is essentially an island with the water on three sides”–and the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea “blocking the hostile nation to the north.” Finally, he adds in an email, “The small geographical size of Korea and the great rail and road networks also mean that assets/resources needed to fight the virus can be redistributed quickly nationwide–in just a matter of hours.” Korea’s history of having battled, and defeated, previous epidemiological threats undoubtedly helped.While President Donald Trump’s people seemed oblivious to the danger of a pandemic, observes Tom Coyner, a long-time business consultant in Seoul, in South Korea “the national health program is relatively immune to political pressures.” Thus “precautionary measures, such as those pertaining to a possible pandemic, such as SARS, MERS, and now COVID-19, were being treated seriously and unlikely to face budgetary cutbacks. “Hank Morris, also a consultant in Seoul, agrees. “The Koreans must have developed viral infection testing capacities from the time of SARS and MERS, and also for swine flu, all of which were within the past 20 years,” he says. “They began developing large-scale testing years ago and have allocated some resources to testing capability every year.”Amazingly, even Korean conservatives, bitterly opposed to the liberal policies of President Moon, cannot deny that Korea’s approach to coronavirus actually appears to be working.“We’re very advanced,” says Maeng Joo-seok, a regular participant in right-wing protests before the government banned them.  “We are very developed and reliable”–enough to imbue Koreans with confidence in their ability to defeat the odds as they have done so often since the country’s rise from the rubble of war.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. We are pleased to welcome Gabriel Orozco’s seventh solo exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel, from September 7th to October 5th, 2019. A series of new works created in Mexico City and Tokyo is on view: sculptures in obsidian and tezontle; drawings and watercolors on Japanese calligraphy boards (shikishi), and tempera on canvas paintings.

The artist’s practice draws nourishment from his daily environment, culture and nature he finds in his surroundings. He incorporates local materials and artisanal know-how into his work to create his own lexical system.

Hence his encounter with Balinese stone-carvers gave birth to the Dé series previously shown at Galerie Chantal Crousel in 2017: sculptures hand-carved in limestone whose forms are simultaneously intuitive and geometric; As Briony Fer writes, “Carving, sculpture’s oldest skill, provides the means to destroy a square stone block and fill it with holes: which means putting in play the right angles of a cube together with the circular rotations of the parts that have been cut away in order to expose the empty core that is the inside.” The obsidian and tezontle sculptures presented in this current exhibition, are a continuation of this reflection, which began in Indonesia and continued in Mexico City. Like limestone, these typical rocks from Mexico are evidence of a tradition, a history, and a territory. “The diversity of the mediums of the sculpture reflected a diversity of fabrication sites. A French automobile garage, a South Korean sign-shop, and a British billiard table factory certainly have nothing in common other than their role as sites for making work by Gabriel Orozco. […] There is no way to identify a work by Orozco in terms of physical product. Instead it must be discerned through leitmotifs and strategies that constantly recur, but in always mutating forms and configurations.” The starting process for this new series of sculptures is the same as for the limestone works: the artist used a compass to trace circular geometrical shapes on the stone. However, in this instance, mechanical tools were used to carve the valuable stones. Motifs and shapes are always similar, only the medium varies. The circle, axes, and the rotative motion seem to dominate Orozco’s œuvre, less as a pictorial motif than as a work process or strategy. “A circle is not a form in a composition, let alone an aesthetic form that reveals the hidden order behind things, but an instrument or operation.” In this case, the circle strategy serves new sculptures, fluid and porous, drawing upon the artist’s recent wanderings. In these works, geometry encounters geology.

For over ten years, his pictorial practice has continually attested to a spatial thought system. It is the result of a strategy, or of pre-existing rules of the game. However, the system may occasionally venture off-trail. Éclaircie (2019), begun in 2008, introduced new, unexpected colour and texture palettes. Also, the circles no longer accumulate, but overlay each other, their edges forming a “fractured curvature made up of color segments that seem to float on a white ground.”

In the case of the work mentioned above, a metallic-like background, nearly coppery, that the artist rubbed and reworked, until rebirth of the canvas.

Yet, these pieces are always well oganized in a grid-like pattern. Two of the watercolours in the show (Untitled and Untitled) attest to this. Although the result of the procedure appears intuitive, it is nevertheless the product of a strict system. In the canvas paintings (Tigerfish, L’envol and Mémoires de plantes), thoroughness establishes a subtle dialogue with perceptible reminders of nature, its colours, movements and counter-movements.

A series of watercolours –Suisai in Japanese– is exhibited in parallel with these paintings. As usual, he uses the materials around him to create. In this case, he adopted boards used for Japanese calligraphy. Their gilded surface enhances the properties of the watercolour. The motion of the raised hand is an appeal. The strict grid and circle structure seem to have disappeared; the geometric system has mutated somehow. “Even if the object itself doesn’t show a circle, there is a circular movement in the process of the making and the way of circular action and a circular or cyclical way of working.” The process is still organic, with a visible trace. However here, the shapes are free and the spots flow, accumulating and spreading. If we see mainly abstract compositions, we sense the presence of flowers, plants, but also landscapes. The watercolour technique enables Gabriel Orozco to discover new shapes, more traditional, more turbulent. They allow him to apprehend painting in a different way, and to focus on both gesture and medium. Playing with the multiple degrees of opacity and transparency offered by watercolour and its diluted substance, spinning brushstrokes bring the work to life.

In 2019, Gabriel Orozco was chosen to orchestrate the transformation of Chapultepec Park in Mexico City into a nerve center at the crossroads of art, culture, and nature.

Unleash The Archers rounded off a trek through Europe with Orden Ogan and Rhapsody Of Fire by adding a few headline gigs of their own in the UK. Before flying home to Canada, the metal outfit had one last stop, the ever popular Bannermans Bar in Edinburgh. Think of a metal version of the Cavern in Liverpool, and you are close enough. Tonight, it was rammed. Something that seemed to genuinely surprise the band.

Before Unleash The Archers took to the stage, Damaj represented the west coast of Scotland by bringing their fiery brand of metal to the masses. Having just recorded their debut album in Sweden, it was time to dust off the studio cobwebs by getting back in front of a crowd. Tracks from their EP ‘The Wrath Of The Tide’ were known to the core fans down the front, and ‘Well Of Souls’ particularly stood out, as did the total banger ‘The Testament Of Judas’. The mix of thrash and old school metal works well on the latter, an ambitious track that takes many twists and turns. Damaj did enough in their allocated time to get more than a few people stopping at the merch stand on the way to the bar.

After a quick turnaround, it’s the turn of the headliners, and judging by all the Unleash The Archers shirts in attendance, no-one has just wandered in off the street. With new album ‘Apex’ rightly lauded as their strongest to date, it’s no surprise that Unleash The Archers chose to lean on it heavily tonight. ‘Awakening’ kicks off the album and the live set, a glorious seven minute romp of piledriving bass drum from Scott Buchanan, who towers over the tiny drum kit like Gulliver in Lilliput. Brittney Slayes quickly lives up to her stage surname and unleashes (sorry, couldn’t help it) what can only be described as a true metal voice. As soon as you mention a vocalist alongside Dio, Rob Halford, or Geoff Tate (for me, the holy trinity of metal voices), it provokes a response, intentional or not. Slayes is not the next Dio, Halford, or Tate, they are all unique, but she is the first Brittney Slayes, and deserving of all the plaudits that will come her way. Christ, she can sing! Her classical background no doubt helping with her range. Do yourself a quick favour, go check out the band’s Facebook page, where you will see a video of her performing in an Edinburgh karaoke bar after this show. Anyone that takes on Queensrÿche at karaoke deserves a stiff drink or two, but she totally nails ‘Queen Of The Reich’, trust me. No time to rest after the opening onslaught of ‘Awakening’, as the band power full steam ahead straight into a pair of new tracks. ‘The Matriarch’ has a great tempo, and fists are pumping the air in unison as the dual guitars from Grant Truesdell and Andrew Kingsley get the pit going. ‘Cleanse The Bloodlines’ quickly follows, and the pit takes a slight breather throughout the seven minute epic. Fists are still pumping skywards as the song ends and the band pause to get a breath in the crucible-like heat.

The carnage continues when Unleash The Archers launch into an oldie (of sorts), ‘Test Your Metal’. People are windmilling everywhere, which is actually rather nice, as the breeze is very welcome. Slayes vocals are incredible, delivering a vocal performance truly worthy of the Metal God himself. ‘Time Stands Still’ slows the pace down a notch or two, but the ferocity is still evident, and the neck muscles get a proper workout. Bassist, Nikko Whitworth deserves a special mention for playing with a back injury that makes even the slightest movement look painful. Not only that, but his unique style of playing is incredible to watch. Top work fella! The set begins to wind down with the arrival of ‘Tonight We Ride’, which is marked with some more high pitched screams from Slayes, quickly followed by Buchanan’s breakneck speed bass drum. Featuring plenty of audience participation, it seems to be the perfect way to end the show. Only thing is, the band have to go through the crowd when leaving the stage, and these guys are not for shifting (one fan came over from America so he is not moving yet!). A quickly arranged encore of ‘Apex’ is produced, and the intro is perfect for a little bit of waving one’s arms in the air side to side like a loon. When everyone else is doing it, it’s not so bad. The title track of the latest album is an eight minute behemoth that evokes a vibe of classic Maiden, easily the highlight of the evening, and one that could have been missed had anyone been foolish enough to leave early.
