adding to my tags because i’ve been thinkin a lot about the post i just reblogged and have more thoughts:

i’ll be real, the more i saw ‘hey adhd influencers are so annoying’ the more i worried that i was unconsciously contributing to the spreading reputation of adhd folks as annoying and over-pathologizing every symptom they experience

and then i realized. i am not a goddam influencer or life coach or representative. obviously i have some obligation as someone who cares about myself and the people that like my comics to not spread harmful ideology or blatant misinformation but i never intended myself to be a “’increase your productivity!!’ blog OR a ‘if you have XYZ you have adhd!’ blog. and i do this for fun, and originally started this blog bc i had a lot of internalized shame and self loathing about my adhd and thought if i could make it funny i might have less of that. let’s get real! and it worked!

i’ve obviously done this kind of thing— (hey these symptoms might be adhd!) a lot before in my life & on this blog, but there’s more to it than trying to be an “influencer” or whatever. a term that didn’t even exist when i started this blog!

i felt very isolated trying to find out if i had any mental problems & what have you originally because of large advice (etc) blogs with staunchly anti self Dx views at the time

so i overcorrected when i DID get dxed and tried to validate everyone who was like me. and of course. not the best course of action always for the ol mental health. tried to be the source of positivity and jokes that i didn’t see because the online adhd presence was near non-existent.

and anyway. i make a lot of fun of myself & the way m brain works in my comics obviously but it is not my obligation to... how do you say.... not be annoying online.

because if folks interpret MY little jokes as a strict guide to diagnosis. that’s on them, really, not me. i also believe “making adhd your entire personality” is a non-issue. so what if people find out they have it and get over excited with identifying as adhd. saying this as someone who DID do it. criticism of this gives the same vibes as people being annoyed that young queers make “being queer” their whole personality. im very obviously more than a guy with adhd, and id reckon other adhd comic artists are too. (im friends with a lot of them!) it’s fine to post about it online.

anyway. i just don’t take myself too seriously and i’m a comic artist for myself first! and you know what, i’ve been considered annoying my entire life. what do i care if a few more folks think i’m annoying. neurotypical or not

a fun observation made after making ofts text posts memes for two hours, i can more or less remember the exact timing of events starting with episode 5 (you know the sand's episode and the start of fuckening) but the first four episodes are a total blur of people fucking and drinking

For my tumblr post today, I decided I would focus on a few particular text posts that center around the oft disrespected character of Marianne. In my opinion, Marianne has gotten an almost slanderously bad reputation from the class. She is deemed as the immature younger sibling, the selfish and self centered daughter, and most certainly anything but prudent sister of her "restrained" Elinor. This is a perspective that these text posts seemingly reaffirm, as they point towards a sort of reckless and dare I say it, "messy" understanding of Marianne as a person. To us, the audience, these text posts reimagine Marianne through modern twitter and tumblr posts as a bit of a mess. I will not proclaim that ill will or textual misunderstanding is the heart of these grievances or perceptions. but I will state that with a fair bit of perspective that this sort of understanding is rather unfair, and maybe a little rooted in the very same standards of conduct during the time that we ought to eschew. Yes, we are given our very first introduction to Marianne as "everything but prudent" and seen as one whose sorrows and joys could have no moderation (as if I can blame a sixteen year old for being a tad unstable, I'm going on twenty through guesswork and thugging out the worst. A digressionary tangent but at least a new phrase for you.) However, lets take a little bit of a look at her circumstances and some prior concepts we've touched upon in the class. 1.She is sixteen! This is a fact that I cannot believe we as a class were so willing to overlook when we were analyzing our opinions of her. Her brain is about as developed as women's rights at the time, yet we hold her to the standard of a mature adult. We forget how excruciatingly specific and important conduct and social expectations could be back in this period, and judge her as if she is failing to reach some very strict rules for behavior that I doubt any of us would fit into easily or enjoy. I personally think this is very unfair to the unlucky lady. 2.She is being pursued by a 35 year old man, I simply cannot stomach it, and grow faint with the idea that I am supposed to in any way find Colonel Brandon a suitable romantic partner (not to say that I believed the class supported this, obviously, it was just a facet of her relationships that stood out very strongly to me.) To act as if I or anyone else I know could rationally operate their love and personal lives with the affections of a "fuckboy" and a 35 year old man, and not infringe on the toes of others with my behavior, is quite optimistic. 3.Have we suddenly forgotten the nature of the narrator? When reading Northanger Abbey, we discussed in detail how the narrator takes on a life of their own, very obviously applying a sort of soft and unspoken perspective that we can mistake as certain truth if we are not paying attention. Am I supposed to trust that Marianne is this certainly bobbling bottle of emotional instability, when I have been shown so clearly that the narrator can (and will) take shots at its characters? Nay, I say, I believe that even on a textual level that Marianne is being given an unfair shake of sorts. Overall, I really have no idea why this stood out so strongly, perhaps it is because both Marianne and I are younger siblings, and I've got to back a sister up. I think this is overall related to the text, discussion, and text memes themselves, but I do not find it impossible that I might have lost myself in a fit of hysterical passion over a fellow gal-pal.
