Someone needs to address the big elephant in the room and saying that the amount of posts regarding butches being basically sugar daddies to femmes is quite weird. First of all our culture stems from working class women, the first femmes were strong and Independent women, most of the time they were the one paying for their butches, because they were unemployed due to how they present themselves. Now, things have changed quite a lot, and mind you I loooooove spoiling my femme, from big gifts to little simple things, however! This comes from within me, it's my desire, not an imposition. I'm pretty sure most butches want to do that, even in the past, that chivalrous attitude inside of us you know. However, it is not required and it's not something you should expect from us by default. I saw a lot of young butches struggling with this, or struggling with the fact of not being "strong enough", having a weaker physique or for not having the right amount of finances to support their femmes and this is crazy! There's no such thing as a right way of being butch, and if there's one, surely it's not being forced into the financial caretaker role. You're entitled to your own weaknesses in your relationship, whether being them psychological, physical or economical, you're not less of a butch bc of this

some ways in which my old-fashioned / old school butch shows me love in traditional ways :

- she always keeps space in her bags to bring a spare pair of shoes in case my feet get tired from heels

- food is usually split 0/100. i swear i sometimes try to object, but it does not get me very far 💌

- she always walks on the side of the road, no matter where. because of this, we often do little spins when the roads turn to accommodate, which i find it very sweet

- she builds and fixes everything, and lets me decorate

- she tries her best to make sure that i never get up to get anything for myself when we are at home. it usually takes me going ‘darling?’ for her to instinctively know if i need a glass of water, a blanket or anything else

- she makes the important decisions, but lets me know that my word is final if i ever decide to veto anything

- and of course she holds my bags no matter when or where, no matter the amount of bags 💌

nothing will ever put into words how beautiful, rich and complex the history of butches and femmes is. the way these identities encapsulate the nuance of dyke gender, affection and the inherent longing to be seen - truly seen for who we are, in a world that often times, seems to have forgotten us.

thinking of those who came before us, how the ofos butches would curl a cigarette in their hands, and watch a femme from across the bar with long nails tap her glass, in anticipation of that one moment that tells them both it was all worth it. the gentle smearing of lipstick, the confidence from straightening out a tie. we have always performed for one another, and known each other far beyond the capability or understanding of anyone outside of our community.
