OFMD episode where Stede and Ed have been trying to fuck nasty for a while but someone is always barging in with a question or a problem that needs solved, so Ed grabs Olu, hands him a shitton of money and tells him to take everyone into town in a way reminiscent of the mall trip from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Now that ofmd is trending again, this is my reminder to go check out this fic series by my favorite ao3 writer, aletterinthenameofsanity! It's finally finished and it's a fantastic au of Season 2, now with a COMPLETE season 3 as well. It ft. trauma recovery, lovely crew found family dynamics, really great tealoranges continuation, great disabled rep, two different polycules, IZZY HANDS GETTING HIS HAPPY ENDING, Captain Oluwande, amazing asexual/aro rep, Archie development my beloved, religious/fairytale metaphors, Lucius actually getting to deal with his trauma, some of the most tender scenes I've ever read, and an ending so satisfying that it watered my crops, cleared my acne, and cured my asthma! For all those let down by the finale, this is a pretty great alternative!

Things i of course i think about when i should already be asleep:

During s2e2 when Ed was attempting suicide, where were Jim’s knives?? They EASILY could have killed and/or incapacitated Ed, keeping the rest of the crew relatively safe. I think this goes to show just how much Jim, like the rest of the crew, care about Ed, where they don’t really want to hurt or kill him, they just want him to stop and get better. They all were dumbfounded by Ed sailing into the storm to try and get them killed, but they all could not bring themselves to hurt him until the last moment.

That is why Izzy had to be the one to shoot Ed in the hand. Jim easily could have done something similar with one of their knives, we have seen their accuracy and how they knived a british officer’s hand in the pilot. But they also genuinely care enough about Ed to not want to hurt him. They, and the rest of the crew, seemed like they had resigned themselves to die given Ed’s actions until Izzy shot him. Now as has been established by others much smarter than me, Izzy thinks he cares about Ed but it is not the same genuine care the crew has, especially when it comes to his safety. He did threaten to kill Ed in s1e10 after all. So Izzy, unlike the crew, feels no pain at hurting Ed, shoots Ed in the hand, which gives the crew the signal to fight back for their lives. But it is interesting that when Jim deals the final blow, it is not with their knives, as would be expected of them, but using a cannonball to bludgeon Ed. I of course like to think that this is a nod to their partner, Olu, threatening to bludgeon a British soldier if you look closely in the pilot. However, it is also interesting to think that bludgeoning in this fashion has a better survival rate than say being stabbed in the heart with a knife. And I think this slightly less deadly method of killing along with the fact that it is a method their partner they have been separated from used shows another kind of care for Ed: they don’t really want him to die, and are doing it out of love.

That or this is another way to get back at Ed for separating them and Olu. Idk

Still amazing how much subtleties they put in this show to get points and characterization across.

OBLIGATORY COMPLETE OFMD SEASON 2 TEASER THOUGHTS AND SPECULATION POST™

Okay, to start off, I cannot BELIEVE we got this. I cannot BELIEVE we got a voiceover of Stede's note to Ed. We were all thinking it. We were all hoping for it. I CANNOT BELIEVE WE LEGITIMATELY GOT TO SEE AND HEAR HIS LOVE RIGHT OFF THE BAT. HE LOVES HIS ED SO SO MUCH.

Followed by this shot right as Stede is narrating. It's difficult to tell, but it seems like Ed??? The one-armed jacket and the fact that it's layered with Stede's narration makes me quite certain it's him. But ALONE??? AND COMING OUT OF THE SURF??? (There's a shot later that has me PARTICULARLY raising eyebrows at this moment. I'm thinking that he fell off the boat/was lost in that one storm shown later, and Stede of course is going to dive in after him or attempt to get to him in some sort of dramatic way. Which makes me think he and Stede are going to potentially talk feelings/reconcile on the beach)

And the fight choreography of this. Are you actually kidding me right now. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. GETTING TO SEE ED ABSOLUTELY KICKING ASS IN COMBAT??? Doing away with Izzy was not a good idea

I’ve gathered my thoughts about why doing away with Izzy Hands character was not in the best interest of the show.

1. OFMD S1 was beloved because at its core its’s a show about the possibility of change, happiness and love at any age. Ed and Stede are middle aged man that are settled into their lives before they find each other, fall in love and are forever changed.

A lot of us expected that the love that Ed and Stede found would be larger, that it would reach other characters, even someone like Izzy. In certain ways their love did reach Izzy and changed him, but with his death the message of the possibility of change and happiness at any age is somewhat undone. I suspect this is the reason a fair share of the audience is upset at his passing.

2.At the heart of OFMD there are two characters: Lucius and Izzy. These characters are essential, along Stede and Ed who are of course the protagonists of the show. In S1 Lucius and Izzy are paired with Stede and Ed, respectively, and mirror them as friends and guides - the guiding part is seen more clearly with Lucius to Stede in S1 and Izzy to Ed in S2. Much has been said about the toxicity about Ed and Izzy’s relationship and I’ll make a separate post to discuss it. In this point I want to mention that Lucius and Izzy represent the extremes of a younger and older generation of queer experience, with their respective quirks and foibles that have been exaggerated for comedy. These two characters are essential and doing away with either of them takes away from the thematic richness and comedy in the show.

3. Izzy is a foul mouthed dour character that plays the “straight” in every comedy scene he’s in. A room full of funny people isn’t as funny. Because Izzy is the character with the most gravitas and pathos in the ensemble every other character bounces of him and the results are hysterical. Who will replace him in this role next season? Other “straight” characters are Zheng, Jim, Olu, Wee John and Jackie. Unfortunately I don’t see any other character playing this role as effectively, but it’ll be interesting to see if the writers can make it work.
