Hey, you! Yes, you! Are you a fan of Our Flag Means Death who's disappointed that the show was cancelled? Good news, we can help each other! I'll sign your petition and spread it around if you do the same with mine! Shadow and Bone was just as unjustly cancelled as Our Flag Means Death, and nothing unites fans more than the cancellation of their favourite shows. So what are you waiting for? Sign the petition, share it, and I will do the same!

Taika and OFMD
thinking about Taika's new interview where he's said the season 2 ending seems like a natural conclusion to the show.
We know that David wrote the season finale the way he did in case it didn't get renewed for s3. And we know that David does have a season 3 storyline in mind, as he's envisioned Ed and Stede's love story as having three acts. And I know that the fans believe there's more story to tell, too, because they haven't resolved their communication issues, their trauma, or lingering plotlines.
The interview mentions that one of the limits on the show's capacity to keep running is Taika's schedule. To me, that may be the biggest holdup of anything when you get down to it. We're so lucky to have had him for two seasons of this show, given just how many projects he has going concurrently. But it gets more and more difficult to block off months of his time - and when looking for a season 3, David is going to need to produce an exceptionally compelling reason to bring him back in again. If Taika believes the show could end where it is, as much as he's adored being on it, he may prioritize other projects.
To me it felt as much of a risk to end s2 on a 'happy ending' note than to end on a cliffhanger, because it leaves the door open for cancellation on the basis of 'good enough.' I get why he did it, and I do think it was the right choice, but still. It makes the season 3 setup harder, because as Taika even said, he wouldn't want a situation where Ed and Stede have to leave their idyllic life behind. Which would have to happen to some extent - pulled back into the fray at least temporarily when the crew needs their help or the larger conflict of the pirates vs the English comes to a head, otherwise there'd be no drama or excitement. And if the storyline was simply Ed and Stede running an inn and having domestic mornings and working out their feelings, that's just not enough for Taika to clear his schedule and sacrifice other potential projects.
I trust David Jenkins to have something in mind that can convince tptb a third season would bring them great ratings and streaming subscriptions. I honestly don't think that's the part of this process that would hold (is holding?) the execs' decision up. Rather, it's whether the premise for season 3 is deemed compelling and necessary enough for our big name actors to sign on and commit their time to. For all we know, it's taking more time than anything to just figure out if Taika has any time in the next two years to devote to this (have you seen the sheer number and scale of his upcoming films?). They're not going to greenlight a third season if Taika can't commit. And Taika's so busy right now with Next Goal Wins that maybe they haven't even been able to sit down with him to have a lengthy contract discussion.
I'd like to think that Taika and David have discussed the three-act story premise for OFMD thoroughly, since it's something David's been saying since season 1 and if Taika didn't think he could do three seasons then I'd think the show would have been a nonstarter unless it was a 'cross that bridge when we come to it' situation, so the potential difference in opinion here is interesting. But it leads to some possibilities such as a season 3 where Ed and Stede aren't main characters - the focus turns more to the crew, with only half or even a third of the episodes featuring the main duo. Or an even shorter season 3 such as a 3 or 5 episode miniseries to reduce the time commitment for Taika. If the timeline for the show's production has to get pushed out an extra year to fit with his schedule, HBO Max might just decide it's not worthwhile to pursue. So there's a lot of things that can happen, and as much as we want an expanded season 3 with more episodes and a bigger budget, that may very well not be compatible with the reality of Taika's long-term availability.
We have to consider these possibilities. As I've said before, season 3 is in no way guaranteed, even from streaming analytics and critical success - but this is another dimension to this conversation that I haven't heard anyone talking about, and quite possibly the most important one because it's very concrete. No Taika, no OFMD. The fact that he said the show could perhaps go on without him and Rhys shows me this is where his thoughts are as well.
I don't want to make anyone despair here - I want season 3 more than anything. I do believe the show, and the story, deserves the full arc and natural conclusion that David has planned. We absolutely need to keep campaigning for renewal, harder than ever as we move into the one-month-post-finale window. But we should also realize that a big part of the renewal decision is out of our hands, and comes down to the ability of the show's star to actually stay involved. I think Taika will try his best to shuffle things around, but as I said David needs to be able to pitch him a season 3 that convinces him Ed and Stede's story isn't finished yet.
So fingers crossed. We may not hear anything for a while, as negotiations have to involve Taika and he's a busy busy man right now. I am optimistic, but I just wanted to remind folks of this aspect of the process.
#our flag means death#ofmd#there's also a very real possibility that interview was just taken out of context lmao#because david's already spoken about the potential for a spinoff that doesnt involve rhys and taika and just is about the crew

So incredibly torn between wanting a third season but knowing it would probably take AGES to be announced bc of the strikes and if we end on another cliffhanger I’m gonna do something drastic

You know the speculation that HBO is only interested in endless franchises so the only way OFMD was going to get renewed is if they'd convinced HBO that the show had spinoff potential?
Something I think about a lot is how they should have pitched a prequel series about Izzy. No, listen, hear me out:
There's a really strong argument for the network that this would work. I mean, this is clearly a very popular character with an intense fanbase who'd watch it.
With a prequel series about Izzy coming, the writers would feel less need to try to make things up to Izzy fans, so they wouldn't have to keep inserting Izzy mentions and ghost shenanigans into season 3 like djenks did in the bsky special. We could get Izzy mentioned once or twice but otherwise move on.
I don't know about anyone else but personally I'd feel no need to watch this show since it's clearly targeted at the canyon and it's all pre-Stede and if Ed appeared he'd be played by a different actor. Obviously just some sort of fanfic I don't need to consider canon.
For several reasons there is absolutely no way the canyon would actually end up liking the Izzy show, because there's no possible characterization of prequel Izzy who lines up with the fanon guy they've constructed, and with a show that actually focused on him they wouldn't be able to reinterpret everything as being what they actually wanted all along like they do with actual OFMD. They would hate it and descend into vicious infighting, which would be very funny for the rest of us.
I daydream all the time about the world where we got season 3 because of this.

Soooo…. queerbaiting works. It gets people to watch shows they otherwise wouldn’t. Which is important, if you’re…say…starting a spinoff or moving to a new network. Right?
And having watched so many people get their hopes up in the past (only to have them crushed). I have to say that ambiguous references to “friendship”, “closeness”, “family”, or being “like brothers” , usually accompanied by images of the actors in the ship together is…textbook queerbait.
No promises made. No commitments given. Just lots of vague comments that they can say later were misinterpreted.
Saying “give them what they didn’t know they needed” (Tim Minear) is so close to “give them what they want, but in a way they didn’t expect) Jeremy Carver, that I can’t help but wonder - is there a playbook for this kind of chronic Queerbaiting? Like a PR strategy that’s written down and given to showrunners?
I swear to god, if they start saying “we go where the story takes us” I’m gonna crawl under the furniture and drink and bawl.
It would be awesome if the ship went canon or the chars were acknowledged as LGBTQ. No reason not to hope for that.
Just… prepare yourself for disappointment. That’s all I’m saying. Go watch media that’s ALREADY giving you what you want (like OFMD).

Cheers Queers!! Question of the day for y'all, in an alternate timeline where we get a season 3 of OFMD what would y'all want to see in it? Or even what would you like to see as its own spin off? We for one at Big Gay Energy would love a Zheng the Pirate Queen spinoff show!!

Save OFMD
Other shows have been brought back through fan action. Now, we fight.
Season 3 was so close - The streaming numbers for season 2 were brilliant, reviews were excellent and fan fervor was and is high DESPITE the 40% FUNDING CUT for the season and its slashing from 10 to 8 episodes. Max was pumping so much money into advertising season 2 still, ramping up new merch, and investing at such a scale that makes NO sense for a show set for cancellation. The cast were getting hyped and active on social media late December. David Jenkins has vouched for the folks at Max and their enthusiasm for a third and final season.
So, why no season 3?
David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, the owner of Max and controlling entity, has been cutting shows from the platform early for the tax breaks and follows the no third season strategy as this is usually the point where pay must increase for those employed for the project. Additionally, since he took over leadership, the platform has had a tendency to remove cancelled shows from services VERY QUICKLY and offers no other way of watching. This means if you enjoy something, you have to pirate or potentially never see it again, all for the sake of greed. There's FAR too much love and hard, hard work that goes into projects like these for them to just be wiped from the face of the earth, ESPECIALLY in a time where we have ample ways to preserve things indefinitely.
WBD has seen a 5% drop in stock value recently and this will only get worse if fans become aware of his financial strategy and realise they can't get invested in any Max shows as there's no guarantee they'll be around for long at all. It's made worse by knowing so many wonderful, impactful, meaningful shows are being cut in favour of another 90 Day Fiancé spinoff and other derivative reality shows. No offence to them and their fans, but the market is pretty saturated already and we could all use television with HEART in these times.
If you can, even if you're not a fan of Our Flag Means Death but may be interested in the fight against the current strategy being forced on the likes of Max, consider signing and sharing the petition set up by Renew as a Crew (linked above).
Also, if we can get Neil Gaiman's eye on this, even better. I'm overjoyed we get the last part of the Good Omens story, I just sincerely hope we can get the last act of Our Flag too.
Representation is important. Love is important. We shouldn't have queer representation relegated to it's own category, forced to fight other shows of other genres to be THE queer rep we get to keep on screen. We deserve better.

So now that Jenkins said "season 3 and beyond", I'll share my current daydream:
An anthology spinoff set in the ofmd universe, with each episode about a different set of pirates and their shenanigans
Have some REAL fun with it - they can be real pirates, or ahistorical as fuck. Can be the backstory of one of the side characters. Can have pirates, or even people from all over the globe. Maybe one that's animated, or a bottle episode?
#ofmd#our flag means death#save ofmd#let.me.dream.with.ofmd#could be called Dead Tell No Tales or something lmao

Re: 485 -- Why do people assume that Izzy's redemption story arc had anything to do with fan service/appeasing Izzy fans? What if, hear me out, the writers were just telling the story they wanted to tell in a way that made creative and narrative sense to them, & that Izzy's redemption fit into the bigger story the OFMD team wanted to tell? What if, hear me out, they wrote a redemption arc for Izzy without regard to what Izzy fans wanted in any way? Because, hear me out, it's not the Izzy Hands Show. It never was and will never be unless there is an Izzy Hands spinoff series someday.
Idk - I am genuinely sick of the notion that Izzy & his fans are central to the story, and/or had any sort of influence on how the writers approached season 2. He's PART of that story, and an important part! But OFMD IS NOT HIS STORY. I'm so bloody tired of Izzy Canyon people always making everything about them. OFMD s2 was not written to appease Izzy fans. It was written as a full show centered on the two main characters, Ed and Stede. The other characters, INCLUDING IZZY, exist to help advance Ed and Stede's story. The end. Take it or leave it! Wish those people who don't like it would actually leave!
