In the official art of the book before Wei Ying becomes Yiling Laozu, he wears his hair in a ponytail. After his resurrection, he does so again. He only wears his hair in the “down kinda half pulled back” look as the Yiling Laozu. I wonder if the ponytail is like a familiar sense of comfort for Lan Zhan since he gets the more “WY” he doesn’t associate with his death. Since it’s quite clear, each time Wei Ying jokes about his death, it greatly upsets Lan Zhan. Talking about “stuffing his organs back inside his body” is one of the jokes that truly bothered him the most. The man spent thirteen years mourning his death, named Sizhui after the emotions he felt for Wei Ying since their teens, the bit of familiarity even something as small as his hair, is probably more reassuring than even he realizes.
#-ˋˏ🌥 ┈┈ (ᴏᴏᴄ) ⁱⁿᵘ#( must think on this more when it isn’t 4 am )#( but it’s as familiar to him as the red ribbon and his clothes )#( things that bring him comfort with WY )

Favorite moments in the MDZS manhua this week (chap 130):
WANGXIAN KISSES AGAIN!
ok Wei Ying is in paperman form but IT STILL COUNTS, esp since Lan Zhan's ears still got all red over it
Lan Zhan's so cute when he's all blushy and embarrassed (he's telling Wei Ying to behave in his usual way)
Lan Zhan literally has Wei Ying wrapped around his finger (he's telling WY to be careful)
Honorable mentions:
Wei Ying's cute expression as he's doing arts and crafts
I like the Tinkerbell effect they used for WY as he's following his paperman form (they're heading to Jin Guangyao's secret room where he will soon have a confrontation with his wife)

Shattered Mirrors #68
[follows on from #23]
Every summer, the younger generation of the nobility—the princes, as well as the sons of minor branches of the Imperial Family, higher-ranking officials—are sent to the Cloud Recesses to study with the monks and renowned scholars who reside in the mountains. There, they are exposed to all kinds of subject areas, not only the Six Arts—etiquette, music, archery, charioteering, literacy and mathematics—but also diplomacy and statecraft, swordsmanship and meditation. For that reason, their allies also choose to send their sons to the Cloud Recesses to bolster their education.
Lan Wangji has been attending these annual study retreats for as long as he can remember—both he and his brother had spent the majority of their childhood within the walls of the Cloud Recesses since they were able to hold a brush—and takes great joy in the solitude of the mountains, far removed from the capital and its noise and bluster. Here, he can focus on his lessons rather than on his duties as a prince; here, he can spend his days reading, studying, honing his skills in sword and guqin, instead of engaging others in frivolous conversation. It is his respite, his sanctuary.
His brother meets him on the parapets above the courtyard where this year’s students are assembling, ready to depart for the Cloud Recesses. His arrival reminds Lan Wangji that this is the first year his brother will not be joining them—at nineteen, Lan Xichen has officially taken over as Regent in their father’s seclusion, and will be erstwhile occupied with affairs of state—and the thought brings with it a touch of melancholy.
“Huangxiong.” He greets him with a bow, clasping his fingers before him. Lan Xichen smiles.
“Wangji,” he greets him easily, smiling. “Are all your preparations complete?”
“Yes, Huangxiong,” Lan Wangji replies. “We will be leaving within the hour.”
“That is good to hear.” Lan Xichen looks out over the courtyard to where the other young masters are starting to gather in various stages of alertness. “The Cloud Recesses will be much cooler than the capital. You have always had a preference for colder weather. And the change in scenery will do you well.”
“Yes, Huangxiong.”
A shout of laughter floats up from the group below, loud and familiar, and it sends a thrill of recognition through Lan Wangji to hear it. Even Lan Xichen is drawn towards the sound, peering over the stone parapets at the flash of purple robes below.
“Ah,” he says knowingly. “That would be Yunmeng’s Wei Wuxian, Wei-gongzi. The son of Wei Changze, and Jiang-wang’s ward. He’s here in place of Yunmeng Jiang-shi’s Crown Prince, Jiang Wanyin, who was here last year.”
Yunmeng. That would explain the purple robes and the boisterous laughter—Lan Wangji has never been to Yunmeng personally, but he has heard that they are more…free-spirited as a people. Certainly not as reserved or quiet as Gusu, but with the same affinity for water; where Gusu borders the sea, Yunmeng is home to lakes and rivers, and both nations are well-versed in battle tactics on water.
For Wei Wuxian to be here as a representative on Yunmeng, in place of their own Crown Prince, must mean he is of high birth, or perhaps part of a powerful family. It would certainly explain his cavalier attitude towards trespassing palace grounds in the middle of the night.
“Wangji, is something the matter?” Lan Wangji can hear the amusement in his brother’s voice.
“My apologies, Huangxiong,” he replies with a bow. “I came across an intruder while on patrol a few nights ago, trying to sneak past the guards. I did not think I would find them here.”
“Oh?” Lan Xichen raises an eyebrow, both concerned and intrigued. “Would I be correct in assuming the intruder in question is Wei-gongzi?”
“Yes, Huangxiong.” He exhales through his nose, frowning. “I should report this to Huangshu, so the matter can be dealt with appropriately, given Wei-gongzi’s status—”
Lan Xichen laughs, reaching out to clasp him on the shoulder.
“Perhaps you could let it slide, just this once?” he suggests with a twinkle in his eye. “It is, after all, his first time here in Gusu. I’m not saying not to discipline him,” he adds, when it’s clear Lan Wangji wants to protest. “Just that it would be good to show leniency on a small infraction. After all, if one does not know any better, one cannot be held responsible.”
“Trespassing is not just a crime in Gusu,” Lan Wangji says, annoyed. Below, Wei Wuxian is brushing his horse—a beautiful black mare that nuzzles at his pockets for treats as he croons and laughs, every bit as cheeky as her master—seemingly oblivious to his observers. “He cannot possibly claim ignorance, Huangxiong.”
Lan Xichen smiles and shakes his head fondly.
“Well, if you insist he be punished for his transgressions, I would suggest perhaps introducing yourself before you do.” He steps back, hand falling back to his side. “I’m afraid I cannot see you off. The Qinghe delegation arrived this morning and I must make preparations to receive them. Take care, Wangji. Safe travels.”
Lan Wangji bows at the waist. “Thank you, Huangxiong.”
He stays bowed until Lan Xichen’s footsteps recede, an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach as he watches the distance between them grow. It is inevitable, of course. His brother is Crown Prince and Regent, and will one day be Emperor; it is only natural that their paths diverge as they grow older. In a year or two, Lan Wangji will also be expected to take on more and more responsibilities of his own—already now his uncle is has him reviewing past petitions as part of his studies, and debates with him on the best course of action to take in each particular case. It is challenging work, but rewarding, and Lan Wangji finds it almost as tiring as a full day of drills on the training field.
In the courtyard below, Wei Wuxian is talking to another young man dressed in Qinghe green—Nie Huaisang, the younger brother and heir to Nie Mingjue, the young lord of Qinghe—while helping him with his horse. There is no way to tell what they are saying from this distance, but it must be terribly amusing because Wei Wuxian throws his head back with laughter, and their eyes catch. He watches as recognition dawns on his face, replaced then with excitement, followed quickly by mischievous delight.
“Miu-gongzi!” Heat floods Lan Wangji’s neck at the nickname, shouted across the courtyard for everyone to hear. More than a few heads turn in his direction. “Miu-gongzi, are you here for the study retreat too? Come join us!”
He quashes the little flutter in his chest and turns away, ears burning at such a shameless display, already dreading the next few months.

I realised that a lot of what I had planned to write for this verse coming up is set in the WWX era, but then also realised that the WY arc isn’t really developed either. Like, their relationship build up etc. So here is a little something.
Jumping back to the WWX arc in the next bit (probably).
(Also, yes, I have heard your requests for the AU verse. It is...in development.)

Maybe Jesper & Wylan have their parents over for dinner? Jesper and Colm reminisces abt Jespers Mom, Marya gushes about Wylan as a baby, maybe Jesper and Wylan announce their engagement (or something else cute?? Idk😅)
A modern au...
Wylan ran a hand through his red-gold curls distractedly. He picked up a fidget cube from the kitchen counter and moved the toggle back and forth, glancing at the open door periodically. He checked his reflection in the hall mirror and straightened his navy blue suit jacket.
He called up the stairs to his boyfriend - his boyfriend who was still changing minutes before Wylan’s mother and Jesper’s father would arrive.
“Jesper, they’re going to arrive in five minutes. Please come down soon.”
“I’m coming!” came the shout from upstairs. “Give me a second, I’m doing my hair.”
Wylan rolled his eyes and paced around the kitchen nervously. He didn’t notice that Jesper had entered the room until he put a calming hand on Wylan's shoulder.
Wylan spun around, his breath hitching, and relaxed when he saw it was his boyfriend. He still struggled with sudden touch. It wasn’t his father - he knew it couldn’t be his father, who had been in prison on a charge of child abuse and fraud for ten years, but fears still lay in wait in the back of his mind.
Jesper frowned when he saw Wylan’s reaction and kissed him, resting a hand on his lower back.
“It’ll be okay, Wy.”
Wylan forced a shaky smile, and Jesper echoed it. “I know, Jes. I know.”
At that moment, the doorbell rang. Wylan was momentarily startled by the abrupt noise, even after he had reprogrammed it to play Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off, but quickly ran to answer the door.
Wylan’s mother stood on the doorstep, carrying a bouquet of blue and purple flowers. When she saw Wylan, she grinned and embraced him so hard he found it hard to breathe.
“Hi mum.” he managed to choke out.
Marya Hendriks released him and looked him up and down, still smiling.
“Hi, Wylan.”
Wylan held open the door for his mother, just as Jesper rushed to the door, panting, and waved frantically to her, clearly out of breath.
“I’m sorry!” he shouted desperately, likely more to Wylan than his mother. “I had to check on the chicken!”
Marya laughed and hugged Jesper too, then followed Wylan and Jesper into their house. They waited in the living room for a few minutes, chatting about Marya’s new job and the art project Wylan was working on, until Jesper’s father arrived.
They sat down for dinner, and Wylan carried two precariously balanced plates into the dining room and managed to put them on the table before collapsing into his chair.
Fifteen, ten, years ago, he could have never imagined himself here. He would have never pictured getting away from his father and the cold, empty mansion. Buying his own house in a diverse neighbourhood in the middle of Amsterdam with the love of his life. Getting officially diagnosed as dyslexic, autistic, and finding there were people who understood him. People who cared about his struggles. People who didn’t brush him off or call him spoiled, selfish, bratty.
Finding out that his mother alone was alive, that she hadn’t died as his father had told him but filed for divorce was the single best thing that had happened to Wylan.
Colm Fahey laughed heartily as he cut a slice of his chicken. “You know, when Jesper came home from school one day and told me he and his friends were planning a rescue operation, I never would have guessed it would end with him moving to the city with a boy like you.”
“Dad!” exclaimed Jesper in mortification. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Colm laughed again. “It means I think Wylan is good for you. Very good indeed.”
Wylan blushed a bright pink and mumbled a thank you under his breath.
If he was honest, Wylan couldn’t believe his own past either. In fact, he’d received multiple offers to turn his life story into a movie, and he’d refused them all. He hadn’t published his book for the money or fame - he’d done it to inspire others who were facing the same thing he had, give them hope. How was he to know it would blow up and become the most popular New York Times bestseller of the year?
He had to admit, a movie about an abused boy who was rescued by a notorious gang from the local high school and proceeded to find the evidence necessary to send his father to jail with his new friends’ help would be pretty cool. The fact he found his supposedly dead mother and fell in love with the gang’s guns expert was an added bonus.
“How’s Kuwei?” asked Wylan.
Kuwei was Wylan’s step brother. He was the child of Marya’s new husband from his previous marriage. Kuwei was a year younger than Wylan and they had a lot in common. Wylan wished he could see him more often, but Kuwei lived with his husband Joost in Moscow and only visited Amsterdam once a year for family gatherings.
Marya smiled fondly. “Very well. You know, we were thinking of maybe having him and Joost over for a few weeks next Christmas.”
“That would be great, mum.”
The table fell into a comfortable silence as they finished their food. Marya and Colm exchanged embarrassing childhood stories about Wylan and Jesper, and Wylan felt something in his heart he hadn’t known before the last ten years of his life. Belonging.
When the plates had been cleared away, Wylan sat back down, his heart beating fast. He exchanged a glance with Jesper and his boyfriend gave a little nod. It was the only signal he needed.
Wylan took a deep breath and took Jesper’s hand in his. He caught his mother’s eye, his hand shaking ever so slightly.
“Me and Jesper had something to tell both of you. There was a reason we invited you here tonight.”
Jesper squeezed Wylan’s clammy palm and let out a giant grin. “We’re engaged!”
The table broke out into chaos. All of a sudden, everyone was hugging everyone and Wylan could barely hear anything over Marya and Colm’s shouts. Even Jesper seemed to overexcitable having delivered the news.
Wylan winced all the noise. Seeing his discomfort, the others quieted and looked at him expectantly.
“So,” he said, his eyes glittering, “Who wants to see the ring?”

HEIGHT. ( Hetalia DEBUNKS )
( They make NO SENSE. This is my opinion don’t come after me.)
Austria is about 5′8 according to most people in the fandom. Look at this picture.
He is estimated to be 5′9 according to most people. I have no fucking clue. It’s either Rod is wearing like heels according to them but he looks like 5′5 to me if Seborga’s 5′9. Or Seborga would be 6′1 or over according to my logic. My problem is, Latvia and Sealand look like they are the same height.
I can see. Latvia’s 15 Though. He is 4′5. Sealand is estimated to me 4′2. Pardon me but it looks like Sealand is taller TO MOST of us. But like.. LATVIA IS 15. Do you think pressing on someone’s head could make them THAT SHORT. The esitmated height for a 12 year old is 5′2. Sealand is literally 1 foot smaller than the average height. Wy is even shorter.
Ok she cute and all but HER ESTIMATE IS 4′1. She looks like that height but I have no clue. Are they THAT short? But you know what really bothers me. The fact that England and France are the SAME HEIGHT.
rumor has it france never FUCKING GROWS. IT SURELY LOOKS LIKE IN THIS OFFICIAL ART FRANE IS WAY TALLER THAN ENGLAND MAYBE BY ONE TO TWO FEET. I Estimate the correct height for France would be 5′10 - 5′11. England first looked like he was 5′5 - 5′7 to me. But if It was canonically like this I guess he’d stay 5′9. They are Both canonically 5′9 according to most fans.
I usually saw Sweden, Russia, Turkey, Greece, Germany as really tall. Not because they’re bulky or anything -sweat- but because they seem tall. Sweden is 5′9. Russia and Germany are 5′11. Turkey and Greece are 5′10. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. I thought they would be like 6 feet or over BUT APPRENTLY NOT.
I mean.. This is the only Full image I could find with literally their full bodies please don’t take me down tumblr
I still can’t believe he’s 5′11. I thought he’d be SUPER TALL.
ABOUT FINLAND. Finland is 5′7. They have a HUGE gap between height. If I said Sweden would be 6′1 would Finland be taller? Or Shorter? You Decide not me.

My Review of Arte
How did I get into this anime? Well, I had a few slots open for the spring 2020 anime season! Let’s read what this anime is about.
A girl during the Renaissance era in Florence, Italy wants to be an artist…
*ADDS THIS IMMEDIATELY*
I really don’t want to be disappointed with this. I have a horrible habit of adding animes where the main concept has to do with the art world. And have it go wrong when the anime is too boring or not enough love is given to it. But maybe this will go well! The manga is already getting high marks and praise. And for being a history piece, it got picked up rather quickly from a big anime licensor in the west.
Arte comes from a noble family and her family has plans for their daughter. It’s just that Arte is heavily into…well…art. They’re fine as long as it’s only a hobby, but it’s getting a little out of hand for Arte’s mother. Arte wants to become an artist! BIG problem! This is Italy during the Renaissance era. No women artists! But Arte persisted by asking all around to become an apprentice.
The only man to even give her a chance was an artist named Leo. After testing her endurance, he allows her to become his apprentice. Arte’s life is officially changing as she throws away her nobility to draw and paint.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: FUNimation grabbed this anime. Surprisingly, they didn’t give Arte a simildub. Quite possibly because this was one of those newer animes that arrived during the COVID-19 nightmare! Or they didn’t want to fuck with Italian accents this time around! The sub had a nice mixture of veteran and newer seiyuus. Color me surprised when I heard Rie Tanaka’s voice again near the end of the series. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Arte is played by Mikako Komatsu (known for Mairin on Pokemon XY, Seishirou on Nisekoi, Susamaru on Demon Slayer, Wy on Hetalia, Eternal Feather on Soul Eater NOT, and Tori on YGO Zexal)
*Leo is played by Katsuyuki Konishi (known for Kamina on Gurren Lagann, America on Hetalia, Tsumugu on Kill la Kill, Laxus on Fairy Tail, Tanaka on Durarara, Fuegoleon on Black Clover, and Arima on Tokyo Ghoul)
FAVORITE CHARACTER: Arte! This girl wants to pursue a career in the arts and will do whatever it takes to do so. She defies her mother’s wishes, cuts her long hair, almost cuts off her breasts, did all the impossibly difficult tasks other apprentices could never do, and so much more. You have to admire this crazy, little lady.
SHIPPING: In episode 3, Arte started feeling that light and fuzzy feeling many of us feel when we “fall” for someone. And she started to feel funny whenever she was around Leo. This would be fine and dandy except for a few issues. For one thing, Leo is her boss and she’s his apprentice. Best to keep things professional! Secondly, during this period in time, Veronica does have a point. It’s best that if you want to achieve in your craft in a man’s world, it’s best to stow the romance bags to the side. After that bag of reality was dropped on Arte, she mostly focused on her art work and no romance was ever brought up again.
Although, I do have an inkling about Yuri having the hots for Arte! But I know my girl Arte here don’t have time for this boy’s bullshit!
LEO AND ANGELO: No, this isn’t a shipping debate. Actually, there are fans of the show speculating if these two characters are in fact the famous artists Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Come on now, this story is absolute fiction with a few true details here and there. Yes, we still don’t know the full name to Leo to prove that he could be the fictionalized version of the real-life artist and the anime never once put up an advisory at the beginning of every episode saying that any character that’s similar to real-life people is purely coincidental. But it’s possible that these two could very well be those very artists. Both da Vinci and Michelangelo were living Florence around the same time. I’ll chalk this up to you history buffs and conspiracy theorists out there. I choose to believe the creator of Arte just used the names of these artists and that’s that!
ENDING: During the 7th episode, Arte is given an opportunity to go to Venice to become a tutor for a handsome man’s niece and to paint a portrait of his sister-in-law. At the time, Venice was seen as a staple in the art world (despite Florence’s rich history that we know today) and this would be a perfect time for Arte to spread her wings. I mean, she won’t be an apprentice under Leo forever, right?! Yeah, Leo’s words to Arte before she left for Venice played around her head a lot during her stay in Venice. Saying that it’s okay if she chooses to stay there longer than six months or even stay permanently!
During this time, Arte was able to find ground with this difficult child (Catalina) that she must tutor as these two do share something in common. Both girls have a certain passion that they want to hone as their own, but can’t due to family forbiding it, status in the world, and even gender. Arte did so much to get where she is now including disobeying her mother by leaving home and try in a profession that’s mainly for men. Arte was unable to do much with her relationship with her family (especially after her father’s death), but she was able to help Catalina and her mother with theirs and even hope for a future where Catalina can see a boy she likes again.
As we near the end of this series, we find Arte still wondering about her future. She’s still seen as the rarity as being a woman of nobility entering the art world when that profession is usually done by people seen as lower than nobles and majorily male. Plus, what Leo said before setting for Venice keeps replaying in Arte’s mind. It’s true that this time Arte has spent in Venice with Sofia and Catalina was life-changing. And Yuri ended up asking Arte to stay with the family permanently. Meanwhile, Leo is noticing that maybe, just maybe, he’s missing Arte. That or he’s annoyed by all the people in Arte’s circle bugging him.
In the finale, Arte has reached a conclusion on where she’s going to go after finishing up Sofia’s portrait. She got some decent advice from one of the apprentices she met in Venice. That Arte should use her nobility and gender to her advantage in a male dominated profession. Okay, he didn’t exactly say that, but you get what I mean. There’s a certain softness to Arte’s work that’s not seen with many male artists. She should continue doing what she loves despite what others may say or think.
So in case you’re wondering, she turned down Yuri’s proposal of staying with Sofia and Catalina full-time. She’s going to head back to Florence and continue as Leo’s apprentice. Yeah, Catalina is pretty upset by Arte leaving after spending over six months with them. But they promised to keep in touch with letters. Upon Arte’s return to Florence, she learns about Leo doing a special mural for the Easter holiday. But Leo got ill and has been bed-ridden for days.
Arte steps in and takes over the mural so that it could be completed in time for Easter. With a little help from her friends like Darcia, Angelo, and Veronica, she was able to complete it. And just in time for Leo to emerge to give his critique on Arte’s work. As usual, he told her on what she should have done, but acknowledges that she has definitely grown as an artist during her time in Venice and is happy to see her again. Surprisingly, that wasn’t the only shocking moment of the finale.
Arte’s mother was there for the unveiling of the mural and actually praises her daughter. I guess she’s come a long way from the first episode where she burned all of Arte’s drawings. So yeah, girls can be more than just bargaining tools for marriage or becoming nuns. So Arte’s going to continue working under Leo and we end there.
I can already tell you that many people were not digging this anime, but I liked it. But again, painting is my thing. And being a female, I’m drawn to stories of girls trying to overcome prejudice just because of their gender. Even when studying art in school, most pieces that were covered in the curriculum were majority (if not, all) male. Well, unless I took a class with a supremely feminist teacher, we would not learn anything about female painters. And if we did, it would just be for like one day or one week out of the semester before we get to the well-known names like Van Gough, Pollock, and Monet.
By the looks of it, Arte doesn’t look like it’ll get any kind of continuation. I know that the manga is still in publication and maybe if that ends we might get something extra. But I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. Even FUNimation didn’t bother giving this an English dub. Then again, this aired during the height of the COVID pandemic (in Japan) In fact; it was one of the very few animes in the spring season that never took a week off due to COVID. I would like to see what happens to Arte in the future. Like if she ends up with her own workshop or if she takes over Leo’s place when he retires. It’s fun to think of what happens and I might just one day pick up the manga to see if any of that actually happens. Due to my particular love of painting, I’m going to recommend this series regardless. And while you’re at it, check out some other series like Honey and Clover or Hidamari Sketch.
If you would like to watch this anime, FUNimation and Hulu have all 12 episodes available for streaming.

The Oglala National Grassland is a United States National Grassland in the northwest corner of Nebraska. It is in northern Sioux and northwestern Dawes counties, on the borders with South Dakota and Wyoming. It is 94,520 acres (38,250 ha) in size and is one of the small handful of National Grasslands administered by the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service together with the Nebraska and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forests and the Buffalo Gap and Fort Pierre National Grasslands from common offices in Chadron, Nebraska.
Oglala National Grassland is home to some of the most striking badlands formations in Toadstool Geologic Park, near Crawford, Nebraska and Whitney, Nebraska.
The Hudson-Meng Bison Kill, also located on the grassland, is an archaeological excavation in progress.
The Warbonnet Battlefield Monument, commemorating the 1876 Battle of Warbonnet Creek, is located on Oglala National Grassland on Montrose Road.
The grassland also contains the Agate, Bordgate, and Rock Bass reservoirs.

The flag of the state of Wyoming consists of the silhouette of an American bison. The red symbolizes the Native Americans and the blood of pioneers who gave their lives. The white is a symbol of purity and uprightness. The blue is the color of the skies and distant mountains. It is also a symbol of fidelity, justice and virility. The bison represents the local fauna, while the seal on it symbolizes the custom of branding livestock.
In 1916 the Wyoming Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) ran a contest inviting the public to submit possible designs for a Wyoming flag. A prize of $20 was offered to the winner, and the DAR received a total of 37 entries. They chose a drawing by Verna Keays, a recent graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago. On January 31, 1917, Governor Robert D. Carey signed the state flag bill into law and the bison flag was officially adopted.
DAR regent Grace Raymond Hebard, a professor at the University of Wyoming and noted suffragist and scholar, contributed suggestions for changes after the design had been accepted. In Keays' original design, the one approved by Wyoming's legislature, the bison faces toward the fly, symbolizing its former freedom to roam the plains of Wyoming. Hebard thought that if the bison were to face toward the hoist, the design would be more balanced (animals generally face the hoist on flags, as they would the wind). In the end, all Wyoming flags from the first batch produced onward showed the bison facing the hoist, although this change was never officially adopted by the Wyoming legislature.

Steven Universe Podcast: Fan Celebration
This is an outline of the Steven Universe Podcast regarding “Fan Celebration”: an issue of the podcast in which voice actors and storyboarders answer fan questions. No volume number or episode number was given for this one. The official description:
It's a celebration of the fandom! Zach Callison (voice of Steven), Deedee Magno Hall (voice of Pearl), Michaela Dietz (voice of Amethyst), Matthew Moy (voice of Lars), and Storyboard Artists Miki Brewster and Lamar Abrams tackle everything from gem weapon of choice to creating their own storylines to favorite scenes and hardest ones to voice and create to memorable studio moments and best-loved characters!
This is a long podcast with a long summary, so as usual I will give you a bulleted list of highlights, followed by a detailed summary.
Highlights:
Miki Brewster’s favorite characters to board are Amethyst & Ruby. Character reactions are inspired by what she thinks a fan would want to see, and designs she loves are overgrown old Gem stuff on Earth. In the SU world, her weapon would be a greatsword.
Matthew Moy would have related to Pearl or Lars most as a child. His hardest thing to VA for has been Lars’s switch to being a confident space captain. He feels connection to characters he plays is vital. His memorable moment with the Crew was finally meeting Estelle after about four years of doing the show. A line that sums up his character would be just groaning about what Steven has gotten him into. His favorite episodes to be part of were probably “Lars of the Stars” and “The Good Lars.”
Lamar Abrams would have related most to Sapphire as a child. His hardest thing to VA for was the energetic stylings of Zooman Wy-Six. Lamar leans on direction to properly play characters and doesn’t necessarily need to relate to them. His memorable moment with the Crew was improvising a chant to egg Sour Cream on in “Lars and the Cool Kids.” A line that sums up his character (Buck) is “That’s nasty. I don’t like nasty stuff.” His favorite episode to be part of was maybe “Shirt Club.”
Deedee Magno Hall thinks the thing her character would never say would involve enthusiastically ordering food. If she was in the SU world, her weapon would be an antibacterial spritzer. The most fun part of her job is the people she works with. The hardest scenes for her involve when Pearl screams. Deedee’s favorite thing to record is “all the songs.” If she could write an episode, she would have it be musical and involve a tour of the SU world on a flying carpet. she thinks jewelry in the SU world would be an alternate way to protect your friends and keep them close.
Michaela Dietz thinks the thing her character would never say would be a sincere “I love you” (though she would SHOW it), or maybe saying she’d had enough food. If she was in the SU world, her weapon would be a cannon that shoots “the bits.” The most fun part of her job is the people she works with. The hardest scenes for her involve talking during a song. She says she sometimes has to burp on cue and has trouble doing it. Michaela’s top episode to record for may have been “The Question.” If she could write an episode, she would have the Crystal Gems writing a cartoon. In answering what food Amethyst would NOT like, she thinks it’d be anything with nutritional value or superfoods. And she thinks jewelry in the SU world would be like being able to carry your friends around.
Zach Callison thinks the thing his character would never say would be about loving his mom (his feelings for her are weird, and he doesn’t know her), or that Steven would never insult a restaurant’s cooking and send it back. If he was in the SU world, his weapon would be a gun blade. The most fun part of his job is the people he works with. The hardest scenes for him were doing all the Stevens in “Steven and the Stevens.” A funny VA moment for him was when he and Grace Rolek had to stuff huge marshmallows in their mouths for a full-mouth line. Zach’s top episodes to be part of were big turning point episodes like “Jailbreak” and “Mr. Greg.” He thinks the biggest difference when recording for a video game is the increase in effort noises and being trusted to know their characters more. If he could write an episode, he’d have Peridot and Steven hunting down a mob boss in a gritty episode where they’d fuse into a tiny Fusion at the end. He thinks jewelry in the SU world would be like keeping Gems as pets and would horrify Homeworld.
The detailed summary is below!
[Archive of Steven Universe Podcast Summaries]
Miki Brewster is first up; Miki is the storyboarder who wrote and boarded on the episodes "The Question" and "Reunited" (among other episodes). She answers these questions:
Q: Who's your favorite character to storyboard?
A: Ruby or Amethyst. She just thinks Amethyst is cute and Ruby is excitable and fun, and her square head is fun and easy to draw.
Q: How do you come up with how characters will respond to situations?
A: What would a fan really want to see this character do? If you're a fan, you could watch a whole show just for a character, so reactions should be about what makes that character unique and worth watching.
Q: What kind of motifs in music or design are most interesting to you?
A: Gem architecture on Earth, like overgrown temples and crashed ships.
Q: If you were in the SU world, what would your Gem weapon be?
A: A greatsword. They're cool and you can hit hard with them.
Matthew Moy and Lamar Abrams are the next guests.
Q: Which character would you have resonated with most as a child?
A: Matthew would have resonated with Pearl (because she worries so much) or Lars. Lamar would have resonated with Sapphire (because she's quiet and introspective the way he was--he would have identified with her diplomacy, and she's trying to make people understand).
Q: What has been the hardest scene to do voice acting for?
A: Matthew feels it was when Lars became the space captain. It's a big switch, being confident, such a contrast to his teen angst from before. Lamar said he has an easy time voicing Buck, so his most difficult was voicing Wy-Six (he can't remember if it was Jay-Ten or Wy-Six, he always gets those two mixed up). It's so energetic and exuberant and he says it was tiring to do for a whole session. He can't believe other people have to voice characters who yell and scream.
Q: How much do you feel for your characters, how do you relate to them?
A: Matthew feels like acting requires it; connection is vital. Lamar thinks it's just about getting across the right feeling even if you can't personally relate. Rebecca helps with the direction. He suggests he might sometimes be told to make Buck "more disinterested," and Matthew wants to know if he's ever actually gotten that direction. He thinks maybe, or at least he's sometimes told to try stuff in a higher or lower tone.
Q: What kind of antics do the voice actors get up to? Any funny or memorable times recording?
A: Matthew remembers meeting Estelle finally like four years into the job. During the pilot he recorded with 80% of the cast but not her, and he finally got to meet her and introduced himself awkwardly, and she's like "Hey Lars, nice to finally meet you." Lamar suggests maybe it was almost like what Garnet herself would do in that situation, and Matthew enthusiastically agrees, suggesting "Oh my gosh we're all the same." Lamar remembers finally meeting her after a while too, and he met her outside the studio when she was probably going to get something to eat. He saw her with her glasses on and thought she looked cool but later realized that was probably Estelle. Lamar remembers one time he was voicing Buck with Brian Posehn (Sour Cream) and Reagan Gomez (Jenny) and they had to do a little chant egging Sour Cream on while other characters would be talking over it, and he thought that was fun. (The improvised chant he describes is the one at the end of "Lars and the Cool Kids.") They love the "side walla that nobody hears." Lamar always hopes someone notices those things.
Q: If you could sum up your character in one quote or moment what would it be?
A: After McKenzie jokes that Matthew should say "bingo bongo" or she'll be disappointed, Matthew says that doesn't really sum up Lars 'cause he's a complicated fellow. He just makes a reluctant/frustrated grunt and says "that sums up Lars." He adds, "Ugghhh, Steven!" That's Lars's inner monologue all the time: "Steven, what did you get me into?" Lamar remembers writing one of the first Buck episodes in "Lars and the Cool Kids" when Buck is reacting to Jenny's story about doggy-do. "That's nasty. I don't like nasty stuff." Lamar loves how he doesn't exclaim or get into a lot of emotion: it's just "that's nasty, nope."
Q: What would you say has been your top favorite episode to be a part of?
A: Matthew loved "Lars of the Stars," and "the baking episode" ("The Good Lars"), the whole Wanted arc was really cool. Lamar isn't sure--he guesses he loved in "Shirt Club" when Buck is being a jerk about Steven's art, "this is bad and it's funny," and then when Steven gets back at him shooting his "vote for my dad" art out of the t-shirt cannons and some people are laughing at Buck's art, he sheds a single tear. Lamar loves that, "wow he DOES have emotions." He also really liked that it was a bonding episode with his dad and an episode about being better friends with Steven.
The next group is Deedee Magno Hall, Michaela Dietz, and Zach Callison.
Q: What is something that you think your favorite SU character would never say?
A: Deedee says, "Can I get a double double with cheese, please?" (They all laugh.) Michaela says she thinks Amethyst would never sincerely say "I love you." Deedee objects, but Michaela says she would show it but not say it, and wonders if she made the others sad by saying that. Zach says he has a dark one: that Steven would never express feelings of love toward his mom, because he doesn't really know her like that. Deedee says she feels like she's gonna cry. Zach says they've literally never met and she's causes tons of problems in his life. McKenzie was not prepared for answers like this because she expected them to be more like Deedee's funny one, so Michaela jumps on that and says Amethyst would never say "no thank you, I've had enough." And on the subject of food, Zach says Steven would never say "THIS FOOD IS TERRIBLE! TAKE IT BACK!" (He says it in Steven's voice.) He'd never do that in a restaurant. Michaela thinks he'd just silently eat it and think something positive about what he could imagine the bad food tastes like. Zach begins to chant "Chew . . . swallow" in Steven's voice.
Q: If you were in the SU world, what would your Gem weapon be?
A: Zach says maybe an anime style gun blade. Like a musket. Michaela says probably a cannon that shoots out "the bits." Deedee says anti-bacterial spritzer. They agree that it fights germs. Michaela agrees that that is SO in character.
Q: What is the most fun part of your job?
A: Zach says "This right here." They all say it's great to see friends, and Michaela adds, "AND seeing Zach and Deedee. Just kidding, they ARE my friends." Deedee says she's getting so many wrinkles from smiling due to being around these guys.
Q: What was the hardest scene to voice act for?
A: Deedee doesn't like when she has to scream, because it's hard on her voice. Michaela has a hard time with speaking during a song, because she slips into like a weird Broadway projection and has to remind herself that that's not Amethyst. Zach adds that the timing on that is really difficult. For Zach, he says it took a lot of time to do all the many Stevens in "Steven and the Stevens," and there was lots of screaming.
Q: Do you remember any particularly funny moments from when you were recording?
A: Zach immediately answers "No. None. Zero." Michaela agrees and says there is no laughing and it's a very serious show. Deedee bursts in with disagreement and reassurance that they are joking and there's SO much laughter. Deedee says efforts are the most fun. Zach loved when Robert was looping one of Deedee's "???" reactions into the booth. Zach loved when he had to use jumbo marshmallows for him and Grace to put in their mouths to make full-mouth noises. Michaela chimes in that sometimes she has to burp on cue and that's hard for her. Zach can burp on cue and offers to do it for Michaela, and demonstrates.
Q: What would you say has been your top favorite episode to be a part of?
A: Zach says "Mr. Greg" and "Jailbreak"--any episode that was a huge turning point like that. Deedee loves "Mr. Greg" too. Zach loves Deedee's performance of "It's Over, Isn't It," and Deedee responds "No, YOUR section was great," and they just keep saying "No you're great, no YOU'RE great." Michaela's was probably the "Ruby Rider one" ("The Question"). She loved the engagement at the end. Zach chimes in to say the wedding episode ("Reunited") was great too, and the song was very difficult, but the others loved hearing him sing "Let's Only Think About Love." That song is almost four minutes long! Deedee loves ALL the songs.
Q: How is recording for a video game different from recording for the show?
A: They agree it's SO different; Zach says it's partly that they have a different crew recording them, with a different voice director. Michaela feels they depend on them to know their characters more in the video game recordings. Zach agrees they trust them more, while on the show the boarders and crew know as much and more than the voice actors. Zach says on video games they have to make a lot more effort noises and weird command prompts, so many details. Michaela agrees about the efforts, and Deedee is sad that they're not in the room together. Michaela adds, "so we cry the whole time, it's crazy."
Q: If you could write your own episode, what would it be about and what would your character be doing?
A: Zach immediately says DO NOT LET ME DO THIS. Michaela says she would write an episode about the Crystal Gems writing a cartoon episode about themselves. Pearl would say "and then I would say a joke! I'd be the comic relief!" Zach thinks they'd have to look at the camera and break the fourth walls. Deedee says she'd love an episode where the whole thing is a song, even more so than "Mr. Greg." It'd have to have a flying carpet scene where they can see the whole SU world, through music. Zach says he'd want a gritty detective show with Steven and Peridot taking on a mob boss, with them talking in deeper voices, Peridot going "those clods are gonna get what's coming to them!" And he'd want them to fuse at the end because he really wants the Steven/Peridot Fusion. Michaela prompts him to "say the theory," and Zach says he just wants that Fusion to be half the size instead of double the size. For shorty squad rep. There's so much utility to a tiny Fusion!
Q: Is there any food Amethyst DOESN'T like?
A: Michaela says: Anything with nutritional value? Superfoods? Anything that lacks textural integrity--she thinks Amethyst would not have much fun with baby food or applesauce, she just loves to chew and have something to do.
Q: How would Gems react to the concept of jewelry?
A: Michaela thinks it'd be like Baby Bjorns, they'd be carrying their friend around, like Amethyst could run around with friends on her wrist. Zach feels like it'd be too much like keeping Gems as pets, and Homeworld would be horrified by our civilization enslaving their people. Jewelry is totally how come Homeworld is mad at us! Deedee says when they're poofed jewelry could be a way to keep them close and safe. Zach worries the jewelry casing would break when the Gem came back. Deedee worries they'd fall through a hole in a pocket. Zach suggests if someone complimented your necklace you could be like "thanks these are my cousins!" Michaela suggests Bismuth would have a "Bedazzled fanny pack." Deedee says "maybe a Pearl Pouch."
There's no information about a next podcast episode.

Born and raised in the Bama clay, these boys are as southern as they come. Taught how to bend a string and break a heart by Skynyrd and Hank, brothers James and Frank Ford along with their hometown friends Andrew Davis and Ben Crain formed the southern rock band known as Them Dirty Roses. Piling into an RV with their belongings, their instruments, and all the whiskey they could carry (in the cooler), they made their way from Gadsden, AL to Nashville, TN. All living all under one roof, Them Dirty Roses are a living example of the quintessential rock and roll American Dream. Their live show calls for a shot of whiskey and a 2 for 1 special — BUT what that really means is you better be ready to throw back 12 for 6 and shake it with Them Dirty Roses.
