He'll dig up just about anything, he's started from being a sneaky piece of shit stalker following celebrities around to having built enough connections to be among the first to know when someone with a Reputation is entering this or the other club
But that's not even where his real forte is, oh no; gathering info is easy, figuring out how to get it around is difficult: who to sell it to? who's gonna pay the most, who's gonna turn into an enemy if you share the wrong name, the wrong location, expose the wrong people? no, he's good at finding shit, but the complexities of having to mind connections and be careful with who you drag into the dirt? not his favourite
What Minjun really excels at... is spinning shit around, he can turn the most innocuous of pictures into the drama of the century, by carefully nurturing doubts and rumours, he's a snake, a bastard
He's always hated the entertainment industry, he thinks himself above it, because he's not as desperate as them, he doesn't do what he does because he's otherwise got no worth in life, he doesn't sell his soul, he sells the souls of others
He doesn't think he's on the right side of history, oh no, by no means, he just thinks... well, don't become a celebrity if you don't want this treatment

#fave spotting#edward woodward#callan#the saint#the persistent patriots#1967#david callan#classic tv#eddy is the named guest star for this episode but actually he wasn't really the household name he would become at this point#in fact this ep was the first Saint episode to air in the uk in 1967 on January 6th‚ setting off a banner year for Woodward that would#be the making of his career. he'd done a few guest spots (Sergeant Cork and Mogul among them) and yes he'd had some stage success#but 67 was his year; around the same time as this Saint appearance he could be seen on the BBC's celebrated drama strand Theatre 625 as the#lead in a multi episode adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Sword of Honour‚ and almost exactly a month later he'd be making his first screen#appearance as Callan in the Armchair Theatre pilot A Magnum for Schneider‚ the beginning of tv immortality and bigger and better things for#the actor. here he's... well he's serious and he's sullen (two of Ed's strengths as an actor) in a role which.. is FINE on the surface but#absolutely begs some deeper questions. he's the prime minister of an unnamed African country‚ in London to negotiate the independence of#said country from the UK. it's.. a complicated issue (which this single Saint episode absolutely fails to address but I'd have been truly#astonished if it had). i mean yes we're all anti colonialism here of course (even if Simon does seem suspiciously morose about the prospect#of losing another colony in his opening voice over‚ he at least appears to be on Eddy's side through the episode) but there's a kind of#deafening silence throughout this ep: Ed is of course white. his various ministers and other government officials who oppose him are all#also white. the titular 'patriots' who oppose him and make attempts on his life and to prevent the process of independence are all white#the most obvious comparison to be drawn (and presumably the main inspiration for the character) is Rhodesian prime minister Ian Smith#who had led the white minority government of what is now Zimbabwe from 1964 and had been involved in similar negotiations with the british#government (that fell apart in late 65 as Smith's government announced Rhodesia's unilateral independence; the country then became an#unrecognised state subject to economic sanctions that lasted more than a decade). the thing is‚ Smith was a racist piece of shit; the whole#reason those negotiations broke down was because of his refusal to secure black representation in Rhodesia's governance#which makes the complete absence of any black characters in this episode a major red flag. but Ed's character isn't presented as the#villain of the piece; the episode is adamant that the work he's doing is selfless and for the betterment of his country‚ and it isn't as if#Smith was a particularly popular figure in the uk at this point for the ep makers to be painting a positive portrait of him. idk#it's messy. at best tone deaf and at worst.. well. i wish Ed had had a better ep to guest star in that's all im saying

#alright so some explanation here#obviously the first domino is warner bros. hiring then indie director chris nolan to reboot batman#this then provides a nice business partnership UNTIL wb decides to release tenet straight to streaming#what with theaters being closed due to the covid-19 pandemic#which obviously pisses off chris 'films are meant to be seen on the big screen' nolan#enough that he breaks off the almost 20 year (very lucrative tenet notwithstanding) professional relationship#so he goes to universal and he's like 'you got the rights to oppenheimer i'd like to do this'#and universal--having one of the few household director names fall in their lap--is like 'sure man do whatever'#this is the how the studio system is supposed to work#you make the studio a bunch of money so the studio gives you a bunch of money to make whatever you want#small aside: apparently there was a wb event sometime ago celebrating nolan's films#basically an event for the wb execs to pat themselves on the back for nolan's batman movies#and nolan's there and he takes his time to speak to talk to all the execs there about how he had to fight them for every creative decision#the same one's they're there celebrating now and that history has proven nolan right#i say all this because you might be thinking 'listen 2021 was rough. i might not agree with releasing straight to streaming but i get it'#'was that enough to jump ship?' probably not but it was definitely the straw that broke the camel's back#SO. how does barbie fit into this? well...you might've noticed if you watched the movie that it's a warner bros picture#they deliberately put barbie--a general audience family film--on the same date as oppenheimer in an attempt to hurt nolan at the box office#and that shit backfired on them because they thought the general public was intellectually incapable of watching both movies#they did not expect you freaks (affectionate) meming the hell out of both movies#so while warner bros marketed *the hell* out of barbie universal rode the barbenheimer meme wave#oppenheimer and universal have made a frankly freakish amount of money on a 3 hour biopic largely by riding warner bros aggressive marketin#marketing that was so aggressive because they wanted to hurt chris nolan at the box office and make him come crawling back#and that shit is never gonna happen. it's all funny.#tl;dr zaszlav EVEN IN SUCCESS can't call himself a winner hahahaha
