can we. have a conversation about this without being fucking stupid please. yes dazai fucks him up and its really awful and sucks so bad. yes it isnt necessary for akutagawa's improvement. but like everything with bsd, theres nuance to it that you are ignoring.

the initial meeting between dazai and aku is aku wanting a reason to live and dazai wanting to give him one. a repeat of what mori wanted to give him. (this does not mean those two relationships are the exact same. please guys. please things are different sometimes). Now. dazai assumes the way to give aku a desire to live is to give him purpose. he ISNT training aku to be a mindless killer - thats literally the Opposite of what hes doing. he wants aku to be More than a sword without a sheath. hes teaching aku to be efficient. not just killing people, being smart about it. being what the mafia wants. giving him a purpose through making him useful.

it also probably comes back to the fact that dazai is WRONG about what made him want (barely) to live. he believes it comes from being surrounded by death, thus making the mafia the perfect place for him. booo hes stupid boo hes wrong!! bc it doesnt. hes bored by it and he says that directly in dark era. that he thought being around death would content him with life and it HASNT. bc he was wrong in fifteen. he didnt suddenly become interested in life bc he was doing violence and masterminding for the mafia. it was bc Someone intrigued him.

dazais whole problem stems from apathy, he wants to die because hes Bored with life. nothing interests him. Except people. so he meets chuuya in fifteen and is Interested by him. and that happens to coincide with his first mission for the mafia so he thinks its the death aspect. but it isnt. and we see this repeated with the other people he cares about (oda and ango most obviously). dazais motivations for his plans arent fucking around w death for his own personal entertainment. its looking after his friends. thats the same no matter what canon material ur looking at. and that same reason is why hes alive.

his misinterpretation of that leads him to be wrong abt aku too. aku needs people, he needs a gentle hand to develop best (beast). dazai says himself that aku needs to find someone to be his sheath and that dazai cant be that person (he doesnt know how to be). ofc, the sheath is eventually atsushi and now that we see aku gain strength both with his ability, with strategic thinking, and just emotionally in general its bc of the development hes gone under w atsushi. but guess what? this is more to the thing of bsd being based on human connection. dazais alive bc of the people he cares for. aku does better around people he cares for.

this isnt to say dazais actions are at all justified, and thats not the point of this. bsd is full of grey characters. but i do wish that u guys at least understood the dynamic u want to complain about.

SMALL THEORY ABOUT BSD CHAPTER 121 ^_^

okay so people are saying that dazai may have been created by the book bcs of that thing atsushi says, i was kinda mixed about it tbh but if we connect it with natsume's character it makes so much sense

we have literally nothing about dazai's life before he's 15. he's a child in the mafia, and it seems like it's all he has ever known. like he was born there. kinda like sigma just appeared one day. dazai is supposed to have parents canonically but did we ever see them or hear something about them more than they're just dazai's parents? it's possible that it was just written in the book that dazai has a family when he was created, but they just don't exist in reality. also all his completely over the top abilities, like the way he controls his heartbeats, his intelligence etc. all his capacities seems purely utilitarian. like he was made to help and be useful. like sigma was.

just no longer human in general. it stands out from every other abilities just like irl dazai was like alienated from others, his ability is a good metaphor for that. so is dazai so alienated and can't connect with other bcs he was made with the book? the fact he knows about the alternate universes too like there is a thing not normal about this guy he can't be human

and that fact would be a great parallel, bcs with what i heard (bcs i didn't read stormbringer), chuuya thinks he's not human be in reality is. and dazai would be the one who's not human in this theory (like his ability name...no longer human...oh mah gah)

and who follows dazai since his 15. and also happen to be an author. natsume!!!! i mean what if natsume is the book's author. he's described as the author of the book that made oda want to stop killing and start writting. that book, maybe it's the book that created dazai. and that would be another parallel. bcs dazai saved oda just like he saved him after.

BSD 109 Spoilers!!!

I will always always ALWAYS come back to this panel when talking about Asagiri’s storytelling.

At its very core, BSD is an absurdist text, Kafka Asagiri having been inspired by many absurdist authors. Franz Kafka, who he took his pseudonym from is one of them. Albert Camus, basically the most well-known absurdist is referenced with the Mersault prison, the name of which comes from a character in his most famous absurdist work, The Stranger. 

Absurdism is the belief that the world around us is irrational and inherently absurd and that explicitly seeking meaning is pointless. In his essay The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus explains, that there is value in the act of rebellion, though. Sisyphus, who has been doomed to roll a boulder up a mountain only for the boulder to tumble back down each time he reaches the peak, finds meaning in the act of continuing to push the boulder. Even though he will continue this cycle for all of eternity, he doesn’t just lay down and give up, he rebels against the absurdity of his situation by continuing to push the boulder, despite the seemingly futile nature of the act. 

As I said earlier, BSD is an absurdist text. All of the animanga’s main characters are on a journey of discovering their meaning in life, and their place in the world, and they do this by rebelling against its absurdity — especially Dazai. 

Dazai sees the absurd world for what it is, and when he was in the PM, he hated it. Thus, he sought suicide as a solution. I will note here that absurdists generally view suicide as a failure to rebel against the absurd, just giving up and giving into hopelessness. But ever since Dazai left the PM and took Oda’s advice, he’s been rebelling against this, doing good despite his inherent beliefs about morality and the world, and he’s absolutely gotten better for it. 

Other characters embody this idea of rebelling against the absurd, hell, that’s kinda what this whole arc is about. The world is literally ending, and things seem to be at their absolute worst, but someone like Atsushi still has hope that he can change the minds of the hunting dogs and save reality as we know it. He even has hope that he can get through to a vampiric Akutagawa when the guy is literally brainwashed and attacking him. Aya as the “last hope” right now embodies this, too, deciding that she can’t just sit around and do nothing and then trying to remove the sword from Bram even though the effort appears futile. 

But everything is going wrong right now. Fukuzawa is bleeding out, Dazai has just been shot through the forehead and appears to have died, Atsushi’s had his limbs ripped off and is at Akutagawa’s mercy, and Fukuchi is literally going to end the world! How can we have hope?!

Think about BSD. Think about the story that’s been told so far. Surely Asagiri isn’t killing everyone right now, surely the world isn’t gonna actually end. I’m not entirely convinced Aya’s plan is gonna work— but please consider that the point of absurdist storytelling is that even when everything seems to be at its worst, even when life seems completely meaningless, there is inherent meaning in still continuing to fight against this. 

BSD has never been a story where the villains win, and I don’t think it’s gonna start being one. I think, as usual, Asagiri wants to scare us, to make us feel hopeless about the situation, only for someone to pull through and completely turn the tides.

Dazai laying down and accepting his death at Chuuya’s hands is not going to be the end of his story, because it goes against everything Asagiri seems to stand for. Dazai wouldn’t just give up in his fight against Fyodor, because he needs to prove he’s right about what he says in this panel:

"The ones who actually make the world turn are those who scream within the storm of uncertainty and run with flowing blood."

I think this reflects Asagiri's own beliefs and is also the reason why he is not going to let Dazai die like this, because in a way, that would be proving that Fyodor is right. From a storytelling perspective, it’d be saying “everything I’ve communicated up to this point actually means nothing and life is truly hopeless!” 

Dazai has cheated death before, as has basically everyone else in danger right now. I promise you, something is going to happen and they’re all going to survive, because BSD is not trauma porn, for lack of a better term. It’s a story about how a group of people fight against the absurdity of their reality, even when everything seems completely and utterly hopeless. 

There’s a lot of theories circulating about how things could work out, especially Dazai’s “death,” and I’m not here to repeat all of them, but I will say that a lot of them have credence, especially because Asagiri isn’t the type of author to make mistakes, every single detail has a distinct reason. 

So even though I don't know how things are going to work out, I have full faith that they will, including Dazai's current situation. None of these characters are done just yet, they've got too much fight left in them to just give up.

So i was thinking of Chuuya, Dazai, Nikolai, and any others if you wanna add with a reader with a ability who can talk, see and hear ghosts! I think its very cool and it barely has any recognition.. Its like toritsuka (from saiki k!) but the reader is less pervy.. and if its okay; can the reader be female? Its okay if its not!! I dont mind!!

So the reader has this ghost ability thing and they used to get bullied and shamed for it because people caught her talking to nothing but she was talking to ghosts, so she became insecure of their ability and sees it more like a curse. So technically a socially akward reader?

ཐིཋྀ Once Kunikida and he had a mission but the brunet was not getting up from the couch, so you walked up and after a few seconds you told him that there was a ghost, butt naked, right by his face

ཐིཋྀ He did not look up to see if you were lying or telling the truth, he just jumped up from that couch without a second thought before he was gone out the door. He only realized that you lied once they were back and you were laughing at him with Ranpo

Seiji thought he had everything planned out. He really was sure that there was no way to find him after he ran away from the two detectives. After all, who would search for a running thief in the damn sewers when there were so many better places that could’ve been used to hide in the area?

The plan was in fact a good one, in fact. Kuwahara made it look like he was going towards the warehouses nearby to camp out, while in reality, he came down to the sewers using the ladders, as there was one of the many entrances underground right behind a warehouse.

He was so sure that he wouldn’t be found, that he wasn’t seen, so pray tell, why was he standing face to face with the exact two people he was meant to avoid. The atmosphere wasn’t nice, it was cold, and the smell was even worse, Seiji was trying heavily not to let it show on his face since the two people that were after him seemed to be completely unaffected by the environment they were in. What he couldn’t hide instead, was distress. He did not plan on getting caught any time soon, and yet it looks like he’s 8 seconds away from being behind bars.

“How- How did you guys find me?!”

This was not what Dazai meant when he said that he would show you how useful your ability can be (you refused more against it being useful than anything else he said about it, so that’s what he settled for), but it kind of worked so he wasn’t complaining.

“How- How did you guys find me?!”

Kuwahara Seiji, a 25-year-old thief that uses his ability to make himself invisible for all of his plans, making it hard for the police to identify him.

“It was kind of easy, actually!~”

“You’re talking as if you had any part in finding him.”

Dazai really didn’t. Once the criminal ran away after throwing a smoke bomb on the ground, (The brunet has to give it to him, It was annoying as hell and many people would give up on going after him once the smoke settled down) the two of you had no idea which direction he went off to, as there was a few possible exits from the warehouse you first caught him in.

His solution? Asking you to question a ghost nearby if they saw the man. You were really skeptical about that, he could tell.  What he also noticed was how confused you were about his question. You didn’t understand why he would want that, at least at first. It was soon after that you realized he meant.

You can see invisible things, ghosts can see other invisible individuals as well, rendering Kuwahara’s ability useless when it comes to you chasing him down.

He realized that little advantage of yours some time back while lazing around on his favorite agency couch.

Your ghost acquaintances can be quite the helpers when it comes to investigating stuff. He heard from Kenji, that not too long ago, you had solved a case that was meant to take around a week, in a day, simply because it just so happened that a ghost was on the crime scene when it happened. You had an easy time getting clues and proving the words of the ghost to the police with their help.

He knows that a few times like those won’t stop you from being so negative about your ability, he’s aware of the impact your bullies had on you mentally even if you try to not show it, but all of those instances give you a step forward to seeing what Dazai and the others do.

“Oh c’mon ‘donna! I was the one who gave you the idea of asking someone!”

“We would be able to track him down anyway. Asking someone just made it faster.”

Catching him in the end was not hard at all. Kuwahara tried to sneak away using his ability once again, but you could still see him without him realizing it. You could see where he was walking off to, making it possible for Dazai to nullify the guy's ability and catch him before leading him to the police vehicle near the warehouse you guys were under.

“See? I told you your ability is really useful and fun!”

“Where do you see the fun in my predicament?” He could tell you were just done with him for the day, besides being confused.

“I mean, you’re almost never alone, right? You always have someone to talk to!~” He knows it’s annoying to see ghosts all the time without the option to just… not be able to do that.

A sigh came from you before answering, “Exactly, complete silence for me is a rare blessing.” in an exhausted tone.

“I would love to never be in complete silence.” He wished that you could have some sort of an on-and-off switch.

“Samu… That’s because your voices would be quiet-” “I do NOT have voices, bella!”

“Sure, continue being in Egypt.”

“What-”

ཐིཋྀ Every time he got the hat back onto his head it just floated back up😭

ཐིཋྀ The menace of a ghost stopped only once you got back out of the backroom and scolded them

ཐིཋྀ Chuuya was confused because ‘Who the fuck were you talking to???’

ཐིཋྀ He asked that exact question and even though you were visibly hesitant and nervous, you still explained your ability since he already saw it anyway

ཐིཋྀ You did not get the reaction you expected, which was being made fun of as that was what you were used to, but he instead complimented it <3

ཐིཋྀ Make sure you don’t let a name slip when it comes to your past bullies because you will see them on the news, missing :)

ཐིཋྀ On one of your first dates/early stages of dating, he gave you Marigolds which you lightly laughed at, causing him confusion before you explained their meaning to him

ཐིཋྀ Yeah, he settled for mostly giving you Cyclamens, Blackthorns, and Bluebells alongside your favorite flowers after that, just for fun

ཐིཋྀ Going with the florist thing or just generally, he would help you around with his ability if there’s something heavier to move around

Renovation. A simple small renovation of your small shop was all that you planned. Moving some of the furniture, and changing the place of a few products for easier finding. You had thought that it would take a few days to take care of it since you planned on doing a few things every day so as to not close up the shop for a whole day unnecessarily (and you didn’t feel like doing everything in one day).

The problem was, he was supposedly not meant to know about that. Chuuya found your graphic open on your laptop and saw the renovation plans before realizing that you didn’t speak a word about that. At first, he was confused. Why didn’t you tell him? He could certainly make it faster by helping you.

Yet soon after that, he realized why. You didn’t want him to know because you knew that he would help and, therefore not do his work, something you were always worried about when he stopped by your shop. Well, he was never one not to help you, especially when there’s such an occasion. he wants a thank you kiss besides being a gentleman, your honor

“Is it really that hard to focus on your job instead of helping me move the furniture?” You sighed, pointing to a bookcase and then pointing to a place where a table stood before. “You’re gonna get in trouble.”

“I’m not, besides- HEY!” Looking up, his hat could be seen slowly floating away. He ignored you stifling a laugh as he chased after the hat. Chuuya would ignore it and just continue on with moving your stuff around, but the last time he did that, the hat was later found in a pot, making him have to wash it as it had a lot of soil on it. (A lot of his subordinates wondered why he didn’t have his hat on the next day, he didn't explain it to anyone)

“Can you tell them to stop?!” He could only guess how funny the situation looked to you. To anyone else, it just looked like the ginger was chasing after a floating hat, but you could see the menace that was taking the object away, so it ended up being funnier to you, if you nearly laughing was anything to go by.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, dear.”

“You’re so mean!”

You hummed softly before answering, “I would prefer to be called entertained.”

“It has nothing to do with what I said, doll.” Was said by Chuuya just as he finally got hold of his hat. Even if the ghost was still holding onto it, at least the hat wasn’t continuously floating away toward the flower-bare pots with just soil in them again.

“Let them have some fun in a while, Chuu, they don’t do it too often.”

“Yeah, and it just so happens that they decide to have their little fun almost every time that I come here.”

“They love you.”

“I wish they didn’t.” 

“It’s better than if they disliked you.”

“Why?”

“There’s a customer that they don’t like for being rude to me,” The ginger frowned at that information but you continued on, “And they are rude back to him every time he comes by my shop.”

“What do they do?”

“Y’know, pull on his clothes and hair, steal his things, and make them completely dirty on purpose, make him think he heard or saw something and that kind of stuff. Pretty sure they stole some of his money from the guy’s wallet.”

Chuuya was quiet for a moment before speaking up. “I think I prefer my hat being occasionally stolen…”

“Exactly!” You shouldn’t smile like that after what you said, but he’s not gonna comment on that one.

“...So the bookcase is the next to be moved, isn't it?

ཐིཋྀ He’s gonna ask a million times for you to join him in pranks if you won’t agree the first time

ཐིཋྀ Just imagine telling someone a ghost-related thing that they can’t prove is not true

ཐིཋྀ You caused someone to be in hospital after they didn’t sleep for way too long

ཐིཋྀ You told Fyodor that there’s a ghost hanging around him all the time, but didn’t say whether it’s the guardian one or some random one, you just left the rat to ponder on which one you mean (Nikolai died when he found out)💀

“WAIT! What do you mean there’s some ghost stalking me?!” Nikolai could tell that Sigma didn't expect to be told something like that today, but again, who would?

“I didn’t say stalking, I said following you around as they seem to be interested in you.” Why did you smile so innocently at that? He doesn’t know but he does encourage you since it gets more reactions from the bi-colored-haired man.

“It doesn’t make it better?!”

“I think it does! Some ghosty is interested in our little Sigma!” He had to add something to the fire, what kind of a person would he be if he didn’t?

“Don’t call me that, Nikolai!” 

“But whyyyy?” It was Thursday, the day that the white-haired clown dubbed ‘the best day to prank Sigma!’, even though he says it every week. He also deemed himself lucky as you finally agreed to help him prank the younger man again after rejecting him multiple times.

“Because I’m not little! And I won’t believe you guys again.”

“I don’t agree,” You spoke up, “Even the ghost agrees that you’re small!”

“See Sigma? We even have your beloved ghost on our side!”

“That’s no ‘my’ ghost, and I don’t believe that they said it. [Name] could be lying for all I know!”

“But do you have any way of proving that it’s a lie?” Nikolai couldn’t wait until he took the bait.

“...”

“Exactly!” You grinned before speaking up again a moment later, “They actually have a cute nickname for you that I’m thinking of using now…”

“Should I be scared?” Nikolai regrets not getting you into the pranks earlier, after all, the younger one had no way to prove you wrong. Sigma looks genuinely frightened that it may be real this time.

“No… It’s really a cute nickname that the ghost calls you by because they didn’t know your name when they first started following you around.”

“Stalking.”

“No.”

“I wanna know it! Tell us, dove!” Was it a nickname he could use himself? Or were you lying about it being a cute one and instead it’s weird? He doesn’t know which option he would like more. If he was being honest, Nikolai was feeling like you were telling the truth and not lying again like the last time.

“Cotton.”

“Cotton? Where did that come from?”

“That’s adorable! Let’s call him that!”

“I think that’s a perfect idea, Niko!”

“No!”

Nikolai can already tell that he’s gonna have a lot of fun with that nickname in his vocabulary now.

I don't know what you're trying to ask me. Like are you asking about how other people will react?

Anyway, I think people really need to remember that the modifications are meant to take out mercy, not brainwash them into violent berserkers who is angry at everyone all the time.

Even the siblings don't kill if they don't really need to. I don't think they murdered all the Big Mum crew members that tried to invade Germa in Whole Cake.

The reason why they seemed so cruel when handling Broc Coli was literally because it's a revolution/civil war. The one hiring them was the side of royalty. To put an end to the war, you have to take out the enemy commander. You could argue that the guy could've just been taken hostage/prisoner, but that's inefficient.

So Sanji isn't to be going around threatening to murder random mooks for no reason to begin with.

Plus, Sanji is already violent even supposedly without the mods. The mods isn't the reason why Sanji can get angry enough to want to kill people. He's just like that from the start, the mods will only take off his breaks and he might actually follow through and kill someone.

Unless you're going to argue that the mods are actually active this whole time and nobody noticed (but Oda-sensei already said that's not what happened).

The mafia

So, yesterday I happened to watch a documentary about the mafia and as my brainrot is huge, I immediately remembered bsd.

So, please, hear me out.

It's not unknown what the mafia does.

They do everything that gave them money.

They killed, tortured, rapep... and although people knew that they did this, they hardly were caught.

Why?

Because the mafia is an organized crime.

It's not a simply thief trying to steal something, it's about people, with status and hierarchy.

To the mafia, being a low member or a high member matters.

The mafia later formed a crime comission, to protect the mafia families all over USA.

They obviously can't work alone and even the bosses have to follow orders.

While Mori is the boss of the mafia, I believe he is following superior's orders.

He has connections with other people, like Stormbringer showed us and Fifteen too.

The murder of a mafia boss, like Mori did, is seen as an act of respect, much like Chuuya said.

Once a guy killed his own brother to prove that.

Anyway- he was crazy.

But the focus here is, Mori can't simply order people around without any insight on the situation.

As the mafia has several ranks it takes time until the boss will hear the case.

There is also something about the mafia, they don't want people that will attract the justice.

For example, Dazai and Akutagawa were two people that killed a lot, unecessarily.

Which was probably why Dazai was arrested as soon as his crimes were revealed.

Mori couldn't risk it, one.

The other is that Dazai is supposed to succeed Mori and that by killing Dazai, Mori had nothing to win.

And Mori plays to win.

He doesn't play around, if he acts it's because he knows he will win.

For example, he rarely sends Chuuya and when he does things are getting ugly.

Mori will let someone of his own organization die as long as he takes some benefit from it.

Oda's death.

He gain something, he was the King of chess there.

But he miscalculated the Dazai's part, because he lose for once, but not for the reasons a normal person would loose.

He plays to win and only when he knows he can win.

So, the mafia getting involved on conflicts like the Dragon head conflict is the last thing they want.

They work on the dark, they don't want to be spotted.

When they suspect some people are a threat they eliminate them, just in case.

The guy that started to call the police with his atrocious crimes was killed by the mafia.

They don't risk it, that's why they work.

And the evidences are small, so they can't be arrested that easily.

And so, that brings us the fact that Chuuya is someone risky.

Why did he join the PM? Because of his wonderful personality? Because of his black mafia blood?

No. Chuuya, unlike Dazai, joined the mafia because he had too.

But Mori was willing to kill him if necessary.

He was not going to risk the mafia because of Chuuya.

So... logically speaking Chuuya is a big threat to the Mafia's secrecy.

So why is he there?

Because up until now, he hasn't caused a lot of problems.

Quite the opposite, he helped the mafia a lot.

But do I doubt that Mori won't hesitate to get rid of him if he ever gets something from it?

No. I don't.

He won't kill him because killing Chuuya is almost impossible, but he can very well send him away from the mafia.

Whether to be a weapon for other organizations, through favors or money, or any other way.

Mori is not going to risk the mafia for a single person.

So... here we have the way the mafia works.

You are in or out.

You are useful or you are not.

You survive or you die.

It's a hard life, living on risk.

Chuuya becoming an executive made him less active as a mafia member, he now orders around.

It took time until Mori gave him this role, but he did.

So Mori has definely something in mind.

Because this is all on someone else and not on Mori.

Mori is the boss of the Port Mafia, but the future of the organization is not his to decide.

Dazai was the underboss.

Akutagawa is the soldier.

So this is the hierarchy.

It's interesting thinking this way, don't you agree?

The Port Mafia are a family but the type of family that you need to earn your place.

Unlike the Agency.

They accept everybody.

It's up to you to decide whether it is a good or bad thing.

BSD CHARACTERS THAT I THINK CAN DEFEAT AND/OR KILL FYODOR!

1- Lucy M.

well basically they don't necessarily need to kill fyodor to defeat him.

all they need to do is get lucy close enough to fyodor so she can activate her ability.

if anne's able to catch and trap fyodor, he'll be stuck. i don't think there's anyway he can get out of there, and since lucy won't kill him she'll be safe.

honestly i think her ability's the best way to defeat fyodor (and asagiri might agree since there's no killing💀)

2- Adam

he's a robot. he could blow fyodor up and he'd be fine. adam manga appearance when. i miss him.

no but seriously i doubt that fyodor's ability would work on him. WHY should it? worst case scenario if he kills fyodor mary shelley gets turned into him on the other side of the world.

3- Poe

kinda similar to lucy.

if poe can write a novel that's complicated enough, he can trap him in it forever/ kill him.

(BUT the thing is that poe hasn't been able to defeat ranpo with that, and fyodor has outsmarted ranpo before. so i doubt he can manage to write a story that complicated—at least not in a short time)

4- Dazai

people have probably said him a lot before! and i mean yeah it's simple.

dazai's an ability nullifier. fyodor's immortality is an ability, so if dazai kills him fyodor shouldn't be able to come back. (but i think he might need to make contact while he kills him for it to work?)

it kinda feels like absolutely DESTROYING his promise to oda but oh well dazai said he's to kill him in prison arc.

5- Lovecraft

based on his fight with skk, chuuya going full force on him and blowing him up + dazai saying that his "ability" isn't an ability and couldn't nullify it, i doubt that he's a human.

so if he kills fyodor he his ability can't work (like i said about adam i think his ability only works on human beings?)

too bad the guy has disappeared years ago :/

but like i personally dare fyodor to go ahead and possess THAT. if he can do that i think we should just let him win.

7- Atsushi

he's the MC ffs since atsushi's ability's claws can "slash through skills and space" (according to akutagawa), maybe his ability won't activate if he gets killed by the tiger.

like if he kills him as the tiger, it'll somehow (??) get past his ability?

Sypnosis: You're one of the Strawhats, and after hearing the news about your captain being caught and imprisoned by Kaido, you join Raizo in infiltrating Udon to save him. There, you again met the man you've been obsessing with for a long time since you saw him for the first time in Sabaody. However, you discovered what happened to him, and you sure as fuck won't let it slide. No one's messing with your Milý and gets away with it.

A/N: One Piece is the beautiful creation of the genius Eiichiro Oda-sensei. It has heavy *spoilers* for the Wano Arc since the context revolves around Udon Prison. Please remember that the flow of the story is just a fantasy in my head, and English is not my mother tongue.

Luffy was defeated by Kaido and was imprisoned in Udon. Raizo, a member of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance that your crew was a part of, plans to infiltrate the Udon prison to save him, and you won't pass the chance of joining in. The plan was to enter the prison, find Luffy, and escape as quickly as possible before anyone could find out.

That WAS the plan.

But since Luffy is your captain, plans sometimes work differently than intended. You've got stuck in Udon with the person you're supposed to save, and Raizo is nowhere to be found.

"You're not even going to give me something to eat?!" Luffy whines beside you.

The escape plan failed, and Queen, who ruled the prison, forced Luffy to join a Sumo match he started for entertainment. So, both of you fought the whole day. 

"I'm hungry..." his stomach growls on cue.

"Shut up and go to sleep!" says one of the Beast pirate members guarding you three while staying in the makeshift arena. 

You shot a glare at him, hoping he'd drop dead only if shooting daggers could kill. You saw him shudder and quickly turn his back on you. 'That's right. Be scared. 'cause once I get the chance, I'll dice you all into fine pieces.'

Luffy continues to whine about turning into a mummy by the next day if he doesn't get something to eat and you can do nothing but sit quietly. Old man Hyo stepped closer to him and apologized for being a hindrance on the escape mission. 

"Don't worry about it, gramps," you stated. Putting both your hands at the back of your head. "It was the captain's decision, and honestly, it'll leave a bad taste in my mouth knowing that we left you behind." you finished. Old man Hyo clenched his fist. He was still visibly guilty and probably blaming himself, thinking it was his fault you and Luffy couldn't get out of there on time.

"But still, Y/N-dono, you could've gotten awa-" You shushed him, waving your right hand, gesturing to stop. "It doesn't matter now, is it? It wasn't that bad. I haven't beaten people up for quite a while, so it's a fun time." You grinned. The old man looked at you unexpectedly and shook his head in defeat. 

"Strawhat..." He called Luffy. "Why do you still want to fight Kaido? Knowing that you lost to him once already?" 

As if on reflex, the Beast pirates around you all turned towards the three of you after hearing what the old man said. Curious to know the answer. Your captain got annoyed and released a wave of his conqueror's haki to knock them all down. He then proceeded to explain the four emperors of the sea to the old man and that Kaido was one of them. 

"I'm going to become the king of the pirates, so I have to take them all down." Luffy finished with conviction.

You smiled widely. You've heard it countless times, but the ecstatic feeling it gives you doesn't get old. It brought back memories from before you became an official part of the crew.

*Flashback*

"Oi, Y/N! Join my crew!" you almost drown yourself in the glass of water you're drinking to the sudden outburst of the guy beside you. Whipping your head towards him with furrowed eyebrows, giving him a look like he grew an extra head, you retorted, "And what-in-the-holy-meatballs made you think I would want to play pirates with you? More or else BECOME a pirate?!".

"What? It'll be fun, I swear!" raising his right hand as if to promise. "Sanji's the best cook, and you'll enjoy all the dishes he'll serve! We can even have different eating contests occasionally.", he babbled.

Just thinking about it made you salivate.

Tempting…

It's really, really tempting...

But… "No, Thank you!".

As much as you're tempted by the idea of eating the 'best' dishes this Sanji person can cook, just thinking about living with a diverse group of individuals on a ship and floating for days in the vast sea made you cringe. You're okay with being alone, going from one place to another since social gathering is not your cup of tea. Being alone gives you freedom, not to mention the peace of mind of not causing trouble to anyone. Aside from being a petite woman with a huge appetite, you have no exceptional talent to boast. You only have an appetite that surpassed even this guy’s, the reason he lost to you in this meat-eating competition where you met. 

Standing up, you gathered your things and swiftly left the place without turning back. You thought that was the last time you'd see the guy, so you brushed it off as an uncanny encounter. 'He's a pirate, so they'll probably leave this island immediately.' you forethought. 

Boy, were you wrong! Because for the next couple of days, you always 'coincidentally' bumped into each other, and a series of back-and-forth barrage of why you should be joining his crew and why you shouldn't would always start. And the rest was history…

*End of Flashback*

You’re unsure if it's his persuasion, hidden charms, or just him being Luffy that you finally said 'Yes' to join his crew. Whatever it may be, you surprisingly never regretted it.

Your trip down memory lane was cut short when a mud-like entity appeared behind old man Hyo. It was Caribou, and on his stomach was Raizo, much to the old man's surprise. Questions were fired at the ninja, and he happily answered and explained to the old man what had been happening.

What was awesome was when Caribou stole Queen's share of Red Bean Soup!

"Fucking food finally! I was already thinking about chopping one of the Beast pirates." you nonchalantly said, which earned you weirded-out looks from Raizo, Caribou, and the old man. "Relax.", you said. " 's a joke.", and you smiled innocently at them. They can only nervously laugh at the awkward atmosphere while Luffy, knowing you, just laughs off his head.

The next day, Kaido shared some news with Queen. Komurasaki, the famous Oiran of the flower capital, died. Queen was devastated and hurriedly commanded to hook up the light-scroll snail to confirm the news. Your team, on the other hand, was so eager to start the sumo match.

"Did you idiots gain weight from yesterday?!" Queen was astonished. Eyes popped out after seeing Luffy and the old man, all plump and round than they were yesterday. 'Stupid captain,' you scratched your head in annoyance. 'I told him to eat only enough to regain his strength. Not to the point of bursting!' The beast pirates probably know by now that Queen's casserole of Red Bean Soup was missing, and the culprits are not too hard to guess.

You pinched the bridge of your nose like it would help stop the upcoming headache. "I also think finishing all that soup was too much. I'm surprised he survived this long as a captain." Caribou muttered. "Well, that's Luffy for you." is all you can say.

The light-scroll snail was rolling, showing a place somewhere in Wano. Queen was frantically looking for any signs or news about Komurasaki but to no avail. The view was changed from one place to another until it showed a scene where Zoro and Sanji saved a little girl. 

Both you and your captain's face lit up. You excitedly run towards the arena, propping yourself up to stand behind your captain and to get a clearer view of the scene. Everything happened so fast, and now your crew was all in combat mode. "Go get them, guys! Kick their dirty asses!" you cheered even though they won't hear you. Arms stretching upwards.

Queen looked at you and asked if you knew the green-haired man shown on the screen. It was Zoro. ‘Shoot!’ You should have remembered. You shouldn't know that you knew them as part of your crew's disguise. The excitement of seeing everyone again and in action had you slip the crucial details in your mind. Luffy turns to you with knowing eyes, and you both 'tried' to deny the fact. Lips pouting, eyes looking elsewhere in an attempt to lie. 

Unfortunately, you two sucked at lying, "It's too obvious, you liars!" Queen hissed. Clicking your tongue in annoyance, you couldn't care less about the consequences. To hell with the disguise! Everything was already fucked up since the escape mission failed. You’re almost at your limit anyway, and the itch of wanting to go wild is growing stronger by the minute. You focused your attention back on the screen instead. You have already decided that when all hell breaks loose in here, that’ll be your cue to go on a rampage. But for now, you’ll simply enjoy watching your friends break some legs.

In your peripheral vision, you saw one of Queen’s underlings approach him. You used one of your hidden skills to make out whatever he’s reporting. 

Ultrasonic hearing. 

Sounds cool, right? 

Of course, it is. After all, you put so much effort into naming this skill in another fancy way to mask the truth that it was only talent in picking up gossip. So helpful in hunting new delicacies.

Kidding aside, you heard Babanuki speak about a criminal arriving soon from the Flower Capital. Queen seems not to expect any new prisoners and is curious about who they might be.

Not long after, Udon Prison's main gate opened, and more of the Beast pirates walked in. You noticed one of them on a horse carrying a vertical red flag with the words ‘HITOKIRI.’ Queen asked who it was. “He’s a piece of garbage that couldn't complete a mission given by the Shogun of the Flower Capital,” answered Babanuki.

“We have a message from Orochi saying that we can punish him however we like.” announced the man leading in front of the newcomers. “We brought you, Hitokiri Kamazo!” he shouted. 

The prisoner started laughing manically, and you turned your head in his direction for some reason. Escorted was a tall man wearing a brown kimono, blonde hair, and a face covered with bandages. The only visible features you’ll see are his eyes and purple-colored lip. ‘Nice fashion sense.’

“Oh, so you’re Kamazo? I’ve heard a lot about you.” - Queen.

The prisoner continues laughing, not giving a shit about what the baboon said. 

“We also caught another one,” another beast guy added. “This one was stupid enough to show himself to us while yelling something. So, I shot him multiple times and didn’t even try to run.” the guy laughed.

Much to the surprise so far, the other prisoner turns out to be Eustass Kid, captain of the Kid pirates. He was holed up in the same prison cell as Luffy, and when you’re trying to escape the other night with your captain, he beat you all to it. ‘What the hellhole do you think you’re doing, you Oni (demon)!’ You can’t help but think you’re surrounded with morons.

Luffy called out to Kid. He stood beside you, and you didn’t even notice. The shock on his face after seeing his fellow captain being brought back inside was evident. You turn your attention back to Kid, now kneeling on the ground. ‘Hey, what’s going on.’ Confused by his sudden action, you started to move toward the kid pirate’s captain, but Luffy stopped you. You looked at him, and he wasn’t even looking at you. He still has his attention on Kid. However, his grip on your wrist says otherwise. It was firm enough to tell you not to do anything. Yet.

You sighed, then nodded at Luffy; only then did he release his grip on you. Looking back at Eustass Kid, you saw an expression you never thought you’d see in him. Mixed emotions danced throughout his face, but bewilderment was more prominent.

He spoke to the other prisoner, Kamazo, who was still manically laughing. “Oi, what happened? Why are you laughing?! Stop! I said stop!” tears started forming in his eyes. He continued, “I remember how you hate the way you laugh…” staring at Kamazo but more like seeing a distant memory of the past, “...and you even stop laughing out loud at some point.”

Jerking your head to the side, thinking, ‘I’ve heard this before.’. It was somewhat familiar, but you can’t remember where or when you heard about it.

“Anyone who mocked the way you laughed was easily beaten to death.” - Kid

Then it hit you.

Your body froze.

An unwelcoming chill runs down your spine.

The next thing you knew, your lips moved, mouthing what Kid said, like you knew the next thing he’d say, like the back of your hand.

“Until you started wearing a mask to hide your face.” - You

“No shit..” was what followed after the statement came out of your mouth. Blood ran cold, and your hands started to tremble out of control. You couldn’t believe it. You were just guessing and were instead hoping you were mistaken. 

Now crying, Kid said, “That’s the person I knew. So please stop.” his tears flowed freely down his face. He’s hurt and in rage, and so are you. Your lips quivered to suppress the waterfall about to burst at the sudden realization. ‘What in the actual fuck…’ 

“Stop and look at me! What happened to our crew?! What happened to you?! Did Orochi do this to you?! Answer me!” Kid yells back at Kamazo with enraged eyes,

“Killeeeeeer!!!”

Hearing the confirmation made your eyes wide and your body tremble. The person you long to see after a long time is standing a few feet away from you. As much as you want to jump for joy, whatever you’re feeling right now is far from happy nor sad but rage. This is not the reunion you’re expecting to have with him.

“Milý-sama…”  you whispered.

He never really interacted with Kenji either?? We didn't see him have any close relationship with Gin, the child he brought into the mafia, and it's known that he hurt Q. "You haven't read his entrance exam," quite frankly, I don't give a fuck. I have met Akutagawa.

“Sasuke. Please explain why this woman is in Azuchi after you helped her the night of Honno-ji.” Kenshin spoke decisively but didn’t even spare a glance for his ninja. Instead he watched Mai like a cat observing a rodent.

“Lord Kenshin, this is Mai. She was on a pilgrimage to Azuchi because she has a job working for a warrior family here.”

“Working for a warrior family or joining them?” Yuki snarked.

“I said I was sorry Yuki. I seriously-“

“If you think I’m going to forgive your tendency of tackling and attacking people, boar woman, you’ve-”

“Call me that one more time and I’ll kick you and mean it!” She warned.

“I’d like to see you try it.” Yuki glared.

“Yukimura it is usually protocol to remember someone’s name especially if a friend of yours introduces them to you. Isn’t that right Lord Kenshin?”

“Why would I bother to remember the name of a suspicious woman when I can just kill her?” Kenshin asked his cold eyes holding her captive.

“There will be no killing my friend either, Lord Kenshin!” Sasuke intervened actually moving to stand between her and his liege lord. Obviously he seemed the more viable threat in Sasuke’s eyes. “Mai is my friend. She speaks a similar dialect as I do and we discovered we come from the same region. I’ve been trying to help her settle in here. She’s been kind enough not to say anything about us sneaking around enemy territory. She has my trust and Yuki’s also. Right Yuki?”

“I trust her mouth if not her feet.” Yuki admitted.

“I said I was sorry.” Mai sighed. “Seriously, two ronin just tried to beat a guy up. Things like that don’t usually happen on my lunch break! All my self-defense instincts are on overload.”

“She speaks the truth.” Kenshin said but he still seemed skeptical. “Very well. Swear on your life that you will not betray us to Lord Nobunaga or any of his subordinates. If you break your vow your life will be forfeit to me.”

Mai gasped. Her life? Man these guys took promises seriously. She glanced at Sasuke who seemed at a loss for what to say to his sword-happy liege.

Suddenly Kenshin’s sword was at her throat. “Your oath, woman, or I take your head.”

She stared into those ice cold eyes. One green one blue yet both otherworldly.

“Lord Kenshin-” Sasuke started to object.

“I swear I will not betray you.” She spoke the words he asked for and she meant them. She had no intention of betraying Sasuke or the other’s to the Oda forces. It wasn’t her place to start the war prematurely. Also having war break out in the middle of Azuchi would have consequences she did not want to think about. .“I won’t reveal that you were in Azuchi. Not to your enemies or anyone else.”

“Very well.” Kenshin sheathed his sword. “Sasuke I’ll be at your safe house. See to her arm before sending her away.”

With that Kenshin disappeared around the corner into the streets. Mai couldn’t help a relieved sigh.

That was one warlord who was far too sword happy for her liking.

“I’m sorry Mai.” Sasuke spoke sheepishly, “I’ve tried to convince him that threatening the lives of strangers does not leave a good impression.”

“Threatening the lives of allies doesn’t either yet he continues to do it on a regular basis.” Yuki grimaced as he got to his feet. “As pleasant as this visit has been, boar woman, I think I’m going to take my leave.”

She glared at him. Then she noticed the weary sigh that escaped Sasuke and decided to cut her favorite ninja a break. “I really am sorry Yuki. I need to head home for today but some other time could I please treat you to lunch or something as an apology? I really really did not mean to attack you on the second day I’ve known you.”

Yuki paused his departure and glanced at Sasuke who shrugged.

“Fine. Meet me tomorrow at mid-day at my booth. The afternoons are usually slow anyway.”

“Ok! I’ll be there!” She sighed with relief.

“No kicking anyone though. Got it?”

“I swear! I will take the entire day off from kicking people.”

“Good. See you later Sasuke.”

With that Yukimura disappeared down the ally. Sasuke drew closer and lifted her injured arm to inspect it.

Oh yeah, Kenshin ordered him to do this. She hadn’t expected Kenshin to recall she was injured during that scuffle. That he would ask his own ninja to check on her, however, was almost as confusing as the rest of the experience. “It looks like the muscles have been strained but nothing serious. It will likely bother you for several days however. I’d rest it as much as possible so it can heal properly.”

After that observation Sasuke took out a salve to apply to the swollen part of her wrist and elbow.

“Thank you for helping me Sasuke.”

“After my liege lord threatened to kill you? It’s the least I can do. I really am sorry about him. He isn’t normally so-”

“Stabby?”

“Aggressive. At least not when it comes to women. Usually he acts like they are invisible or interacts with them as little as humanly possible.”

“He doesn’t like women?” She asked.

“More like he doesn’t acknowledge their existence. So that he noticed you and remembered who you were?” Sasuke shrugged, “I’m just really surprised.”

“Sasuke…are you safe working for Kenshin?” She asked hesitantly. She felt like she was trying to offer an abuse victim an opportunity to ask for help.

“Safe wouldn’t be the term I’d use. However, despite the impression he just gave you Kenshin is actually very strict as far as his code of ethics. He would never act dishonorably towards a subordinate. Also, he would never intentionally harm someone weaker than himself outside of battle. He does often express affection in odd ways. However, I wouldn’t be the ninja I am today without him.”

Despite his tranquil demeaner Sasuke spoke rather emphatically of his Lord’s good qualities. Someone who had earned Sasuke’s trust had to have his good points-right? Mai decided if she ever ran into Kenshin again she’d make an effort to not set him off. Hopefully then she might see some of the better points Sasuke saw in him.

After Sasuke walked her back to the outskirts of the castle Mai hurried inside. Hideyoshi was expecting her to return with the special candy he had asked her to pick up as a surprise for Lord Nobunaga.

Hideyoshi’s dark expression, however, was not the greeting she had hoped for.

“I take it I’m late?”

“Not just late, Mai, I’d say especially late. It is nearly dark and you left before lunchtime.” Hideyoshi scolded her. “I don’t mind if you window shop a bit while you are out on an errand but making me worry something happened to you like this is unacceptable.”

“I am so sorry I worried you. I truly did not intend to take so long.” She even bowed to him apologetically. The last thing she needed was another warlord angry at her today. “Azuchi is so much larger than I realized and it took me much longer to get back than I though it would. I promise I will be much more conscientious about returning early enough not to worry you again.”

“Were you able to pickup Lord Nobunaga’s candy like I asked?” Hideyoshi seemed to accept the apology at least.

“I did! Here.” She handed over the bag of konpeito she’d found at the shop Hideyoshi had asked her to visit. “I was also able to find the sewing items I needed at the shop you told me about.”

“I’m glad to hear it. Now, I was wondering if you’d be interested in doing some repair work on a Haori Coat for Lord Nobunaga?”

“What?!” Mai was really surprised especially because Hideyoshi had still seemed so suspicious of her.

She’d been doing her best to earn her trust but if a poison needle were to show up in his coat Hideyoshi would be most likely to blame her! “Are you sure you trust me to do that?”

Hideyoshi actually laughed at her incredulous response. “Of course I would. It is a small repair and I felt it might give you an opportunity to show him some gratitude for giving you a place here in Azuchi.”

Mai blushed. She really hadn’t been able to show much gratitude to Lord Nobunaga. Well not in the way he expected her too. She’d dodged his attention whenever she could. He seemed to be reluctant to enjoy her company against her will and Mai was relieved about that. Still how do you show gratitude to a guy who gave you food shelter protection and a job?!

“I’d be grateful for the opportunity Hideyoshi. Please let me know if there is any thing else—er—sewing-wise I can do for Lord Nobunaga. I would be happy to express my gratitude to him in that manner.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. Now get some rest. I’m sure you’ve had a long day. I left a tray of food in your room so you wouldn’t go hungry.”

“I-you did?”

“Well a spy can’t really be interrogated if she dies before I find out who she works for.”

Mai gasped. Did he really think that?!!

Hideyoshi’s laughter made her turn an even brighter red than before and she wanted to scamper off to her room to hide. Instead she braced herself and bowed to him again.

“You have been especially patient and accommodating Lord Hideyoshi. I am so sorry to be such a burden. If there is any way I can ever thank you—”

She broke off when Hideyoshi used his fingers to tip her chin upward prompting her to stand up straight.

“I appreciate the gratitude Mai, but there’s no need to bow to me. I’m happy to do it and I’d be happy just to hear you say thank you.”

She looked up into his handsome face and her heart seemed to be climbing up her throat making it difficult to speak. Seriously she’d been around way too many attractive warlords lately.

They did go into battle sometimes right? Shouldn’t they come home a little marred afterward or at least significantly less perfect? She thought of Lord Masamune’s eyepatch and the hallway immediately felt warmer. Okay even if Hideyoshi and the others lost a finger or an ear or something they’d still probably be outstandingly hot. It was a lost cause to wish that her heart could spend a few peaceful moments in the Sengoku Era not overacting to one handsome man or another.

“Thank you Lord Hideyoshi.” She said.

He smiled and she was once again reminded of why he was possibly the most eligible bachelor in Azuchi.

“You’re very welcome Mai. Here is the parcel with Lord Nobunaga’s coat. Just get it back to me when you’re finished ok?”

“Okay.”

“Goodnight!”

“Goodnight, Lord Hideyoshi.”

Mai watched him disappear down the hallway before heading for her room. Inside she found the food he had left for her and scarfed it down hungrily. She then opened the parcel that held Lord Nobunaga’s Haori to inspect what needed repaired.

She knew Hideyoshi meant what he said about her gratitude. For him a simple thank you was sufficient.

Yet she couldn’t help feeling like she somehow still wanted to show him she was grateful. So instead of going to bed she lit some extra candles and began to work on repairing the coat.

As she did Kenshin’s words from that afternoon came back to her.

"Don't cut yourself. The edges will be sharp."

She paused mid-stitch realizing how kind he had actually been to her. He had helped her pick up the pieces of the shattered bowl. Commanded Sasuke to check her arm—

Yet before all that he had saved her life.

Kenshin Uesugi had saved her.

What would have happened with those two ronin if he hadn’t intervened? She might have escaped, yes, but Kenshin had stopped them. She had only had the power to intervene. He had the power to change what was happening and chose too.

“I didn’t thank him. I didn’t even think…”

The realization stung and she was suddenly so angry with herself.

She continued sewing trying to come up with some way to express her gratitude to Kenshin for saving her. He didn’t like women so asking him to a tea house like she had Yuki would likely be more torturous than—

Yuki!! She was supposed to see Yuki tomorrow!!

Mai was suddenly very excited.

She could ask Yuki what she could do to thank lord Kenshin for saving her! Of course if he didn’t have any ideas she could always have him lead her to Sasuke and her ceiling ninja would certainly have a brilliant idea!

The idea made her especially happy and she began humming unconsciously as she continued to mend Lord Nobunaga’s coat.

Character Study: Chuuya Nakahara's Stubborn Refusal to Give Up

Guys its time for me to get back on my little soapbox... and of course it's gotta be Chuuya that I talk abt after being basically inactive in the BSD fandom since the summer.

I haven't read any of it yet, but I'm aware that a Stormbringer manga is currently releasing chapters, and as such, I felt it appropriate to share my thoughts on Chuuya and the story that takes place in the LN, which was one of the major things that made me fall in love both with BSD and Chuuya as a character. So, needless to say, Stormbringer spoilers ahead!!

I will also preface this by saying that I originally read Stormbringer in April of 2022, so it's been a hot minute! If I get things wrong or leave something important out, please let me know!

Put simply, Stormbringer is Chuuya's personal hell. The people he cares most about gets murdered by this guy claiming to be his brother, his entire identity is brought into question by said guy, he's losing control of his ability (which I'll remind you was what he previously centered his identity around when with the Sheep), and all the while Dazai is being Dazai (AKA really annoying).

And Chuuya is only sixteen years old.

Speaking of Dazai, can we marvel for a second that Chuuya hasn't turned out more like him? Given everything we know about his backstory, it would make perfect sense if Chuuya were cynical in the way that led him down a path of self-destruction. And I'm not saying that he's not above such tendencies, but he's not actively suicidal in the way Dazai is. In fact, he resents Dazai's outlook on things and actively tries to differentiate himself, even if deep-down, he knows there's a part of him that might be a bit... depressed.

I'll bring up here the scene in SB where he hallucinates Dazai teasing him whilst being tortured -- Dazai, in a sense, reflects Chuuya's inner thoughts at that point. Internally, he harbors the insecurity that he and Dazai are similar (inhuman), which he cannot allow himself to truly entertain. But he feels it sometimes, that hopelessness, that depression. Chuuya is certainly a cynic, a kid who has seen the worst of the world, but the main difference between him and Dazai is that he refuses to give in, and that's actually a pretty big difference.

(I will note here that I'm primarily using the description of Dazai as he existed in the Port Mafia. In the present day, things are quite different, as that version Dazai is characterized by his choice at least try to live, if not only to fulfill his promise to Oda. Yet, even in the present, he still regularly attempts to kill himself, so he's not fully on the "continue living in spite of it all" bandwagon, but rather, he's kinda tied to the back of it being, dragged in the dirt, even though he could untie the knot at any moment and plunge into oblivion. (Sorry got carried away with that metaphor.))

But back to Chuuya! As previously stated, he quite frankly has every reason to just not care -- about the people around him, about Yokohama, even about the world -- and yet, he does care, and very deeply, even if he's not always overt about it.

After the Sheep betray him, he effectively has nobody. Rather than join the PM, he could've gone off to die in a ditch, and no one would have really cared all that much. And even when he joins the PM he asked them to protect the Sheep when he could have easily left them to their own devices. He cares about them, even when all logic says he really shouldn't, and there's really something rebellious about that. I will say that this example is the most wishy-washy, as Chuuya was very much manipulated by Dazai and Mori into joining the PM, to the point where he basically had no choice.

But that informs a lot of his decisions in SB, as the story basically kicks off with him acting outside of Mori's jurisdiction. He knows that he shouldn't be looking into his past, and that Mori wouldn't be happy with his attempts to do so. But he's determined to not let the system get the best of him. Despite the odds, he finds a group of friends (arguably, a family) who are willing to help him with this and is determined to go forward with it. He's not really loyal to the PM at this time, either, acting on his own despite the danger.

And yeah, it was dangerous, because then the Flags all die. Even then, he doesn't give up, though. He's tempted by Verlaine on multiple occassions to basically forfeit his reason for being, accept that he's lines of code and not actually a human being. It's enticing, and Chuuya certainly entertains the idea, because wouldn't it just be so easy to just give into futility? If he's not a person, then why have qualms about morality? People? Life? He could become an unstoppable storm, destroy everything in his path, not care.

But that he refuses to do, as well. Even when given the ultimatum by Dazai to find out for sure if he's human or try to stop Verlaine from destroying Yokohama, he confidently chooses the latter. He realizes that the circumstances of his existence don't matter, and what does matter is what he does with this life he's been given. So he chooses to fight.

And he chooses to fight over and over again, even (and especially) when things are at their worst. Things will never be easy for Chuuya -- very often he and others he cares about are put in danger -- but what makes him Chuuya is that he will always push back against the forces that be, even if it means risking his life or partnering up with his god-awful ex-partner. To him, it is better to have tried and failed than to have not tried at all.

And here is where I'll bring up my favorite way of analyzing BSD: absurdism!

Everything I've described about Chuuya fits the absurdist philosophy, which this post provides a more in-depth description of. The long and short of it is that 1) life has no inherent meaning but 2) we must not give in, but instead revolt against absurdity. It is Chuuya's stubborn refusal to give in (whether thru suicide or becoming part of the system) that characterizes him as an absurdist to me.

Anyways, that's what I've got! I think I need to re-read Stormbringer (or keep up with the manga as it releases) because writing this made me realize that I really don't remember it as much as I thought.

The 2025 CBC is over and I loved the story, so here's some funny moments I captured:

Hector got one chance to shine and Takasugi never forgave him for it, that's just petty. At least he got to look cool, you were giving Izou a run for Boyfailure of the Year there.

Well, sorry Gudako wasn't learning business management or whatever it is your lot was doing at Shouka Sonjuku, the volleyball team needed her.

This man is so damn petty, poor Okuni. Either that or he genuinely doesn't remember. In any case, he's a piece of trash.

It's so sad the only tsukkomi got brainwashed by the enemy. Someone save this comedy routine, please.

I love the "Takasugi is a villain" running joke so much. Everyone knows he is and he barely even denies it.

Now this is just cruel. I know Oda Nobunaga was particularly cruel even among the worst Japanese warmongers, but you can't do the man like this, Kippoushi.

True, he IS a egocentrical CEO. I fear for his secretary.

One Piece Chapter 1099 - Initial Thoughts

And we're back

After a week break it's time to see if One Piece will take the lead in emotionally devastating me for this week, given how other things are leaving me on 3 week breaks of ship-based anxiety, not that you could tell of course I've kept it sooooo well-hidden

Anyways, it's time for more One Piece and so, more Kuma backstory, let's see where we go from here

Oden cover this time, Tanukis are giving him a makeover

We pick up where we left off two weeks ago, King Becori has returned and has been burning down the south

Kuma though is fighting through the fire to save people

Becori got the idea from the Goa Kingdom fire, figures

The people though are a lot more resistant to the act than the Goa Nobles were, so Becori orders a few to be killed to silence the mob

Kuma is here and he is fucking pissed

The church is being used as a shelter, as Bonney worries for her dad

Despite Becori's threats, Kuma lays out the entire castle, the One Man Revolution of Sorbet

News travels to Marejois about a new king in Sorbet, as Saturn learns that the people voted Kuma to rule

Kuma though says he's just a figurehead, since a previous king, Bulldog, is actually running the country

A much more adult looking Bonney is running laps in the church though, surprising everyone in how much she looks like Ginny

Seems she somehow ate a Devil Fruit, but also wasn't aware of it, since her aging up was unintentional and she was just trying to up her stamina

As the others try to see how much control Bonney has over the fruit, King Bulldog arrives at the church

Hey it's that old version of Bonney she used in the Reverie, but also Bonney here...

Turns out Queen Dowager Conney was an actual person, explains some things at least in how she made it to the Reverie in that disguise

Kuma yelling at Conney at the back thinking it's Bonney XD

Conney is Bulldog's mother, and Bulldog as Kuma's advisor has come with news

Becori's still about, running a smear campaign on Kuma, thus the moniker of 'The Tyrant'

The propaganda means he's still backed by the World Government, and thus it's only a matter of time until they come back to finish the job

Wanting to protect Sorbet, Kuma leaves it in Bulldog's hands, and goes out to confront Becori again at sea, this also means Bulldog and Conney will take care of Bonney in the meantime

'But I'll be so lonely' welp that's another knife in my riddled heart right now

Alas, Kuma does confront Becori, sitting pretty on a Navy ship and accusing Kuma of usurping him and being a corrupt dictator

Kuma sunk the armada, which got him a bounty (Carrot meanwhile sinks a bunch of Yonko ships and doesn't even get one bounty...yes I'm still sore about it the anime did not help validate her conclusion in Wano)

'He was a hero' 'I don't care, he was my dad first' - Oda please my heart doesn't have room for all these knives

Bonney also wants to be a pirate when she's 10 and cured

Kuma journeys out for info on Sapphire Scales, traveling to all the places he sent the Straw Hats to

He first goes to Chopper's island, since they had vast medical information

Then to Mihawk's island, doesn't look too occupied back then

Oh hey it's those Grand Fleet guys, Jeet and Abdullah

The bounty hunters of course fail in trying to claim Kuma, this was very pre-Dressrosa

Vegapunk's old home is next but they don't have answers

Tequila Wolf is sailed past again (Kuma and Oden have now sailed past it), I don't know what the next one is but it looked like Kuma helped it out, maybe it was Brook's island?

Then Weatheria (Nami's island) and the Boin Archipelago (Usopp's island) with Heracles'n

The stress is creeping up on Kuma though, dead ends and Bonney's 10th birthday is getting closer

Now that's a draconic ship there

The Revolutionaries have found Kuma, Morley has joined and Betty is still looking way different to how she does now

Dragon has a drink with his old Comrade, Ivankov and Inazuma are in Impel Down at this point, but despite all the news around Kuma he doesn't listen to media

Betty also gets Kuma's blessing to lead the Eastern Forces, since Dragon wouldn't allow anyone to take Ginny's position without it

Sabo and Koala also wanted to see Kuma, if only Dragon showed this much pride in his biological child

But he does give Kuma some intel, Vegapunk is moving labs and security is lax, good time for an audience

I think the move is implied to be the Punk Hazard incident too

Kuma is more than willing to rejoin the Revolutionaries once Bonney is cured, and Dragon is more than willing to welcome him back

Back at Sorbet, Bonney is learning how to fight, the scales are still spreading slowly though

Kuma takes Bonney to Navy Science Division Lab 08, which will later be where Egghead Island is, telling her it's a check-up

Got a little box for her like Nezuko

Everyone's surprised about how weird looking the other is

Vegapunk CAN cure Bonney, so clone theory might be done now

Bonney is playing with Sentomaru at this moment so she's not privy to the conversation

Stem Cell Treatment will be the method, real life solutions being thrown in there

The price is exorbitant though, equivalent to building a cyborg

Vegapunk also learns that Kuma's a buccaneer, even though his association with the WG would make that dangerous information

Vegapunk can't explain why Buccaneer blood is special, but he'd like more of it to clone him

Kuma is of course concerned about the idea of clone soldiers, but with Vegapunk using it as a form of payment he's more than willing to do it

Vegapunk hoped at least that the clone army's ability to deflect bullets and shoot lasers would scare evil pirates into submission, having watched Oppenheimer I think the sentiment is meant to be similar

But Kuma does like the idea of robots bearing his likeness protecting the innocent

Saturn meanwhile though has other intentions for them 'a weapon's worth is defined by how many it kills'

The bots are named Pacifista after Kuma's proclaiming himself a pacifist, two men looking to do some good without the hindsight of what damage they will wrought

This was a steady chapter really, could've been a lot more devastating for sure.

We've slowly built up again to all the stuff leading to Kuma's affiliation with Vegapunk, as well as his brief run as a pirate. Much like Corazon it seems most of his travels were fuelled by trying to find a cure for Bonney. A lot of blasts from the pasts this chapter too, though I suppose it makes sense that Kuma visited the places he sent the Straw Hats to, given how them being sent there was tailored for their skills or what they needed to improve on.

The Bonney Clone theory is likely dead, but I still can't put it past Oda to pull the rug, especially for Chapter 1100 - Oda and round numbers after all.

But yeah, it seems a brief alleviation for the moment, before it likely goes to hell again...
