I am continually astonished at how fun they made the battle mechanics, the art style, and the music in the Octopath Traveller games are, but how phenomenally, completely, and mind-numbingly boring the story and characters are.

Its not even about them being predictable! The Dragon Quest series is just as simplistic, but it??? has?? charm?? Octopath Traveller is just?? so?? boring???

I'd like to put it out there that I have So Many opinions about soundtracks.

Movies, video games - the whole shebang.

Music is really just such an amazing art form, decorating time with the vibrancy of sounds, instruments, melodies

Game soundtracks that slap (I'm sure you know most of these, but eh what do I care): Hollow Knight (obviously, Christopher Larkin knows his shit) Risk of Rain 1&2 Hades (Darren Korb is a madman) Doom (again, another clear choice) Octopath Traveller Death's Door and Moonlighter (David Fenn has a niche and it's lit) Furi

I have many others I'd like to mention, but I will be talking about these and more in time to come as I think of things to say other than "Good Shit!"

The Persona Games would almost definitely be too hard for me. Fire Emblem was too tough (every game i own in that franchise besides Three Houses lies incomplete). Most Zelda games were too tough. Octopath Traveller was too tough. If it's a game involving turn based combat, 90% of the time it's gonna be too tough for me. So i never play many games. I was a playthrough based kid, all the way.

I watched many a playthrough, though. It's how I know so many video games. Sometimes it was annoying to watch other people playing things instead of me, but it was also strangely mesmerizing. The level of enjoyment i took from watching playthroughs was surreal. I didn't even need to play something to enjoy it. I just needed to watch someone else play it. That's how I engaged with the Batman Arkham Games, the Ace Attorney games, some of the Persona Games, some of the Fire Emblem games, and probably many other games that i'm now blanking on.

My point is: I watched a lot of playthroughs. And although I still don't feel like going back and watching any of them again (some of those videos were 2 hours long sometimes), they have produced a strange nostalgia and sentimentality in me. Who knows? Maybe I do want to watch them again. But I worry that long videos or even videos like these with people talking over games wouldn't interest me anymore. I may have changed as I aged. And if I did…that could mean i have burned my bridges to many old hyperfixations. sigh…

Octopath traveller games, theyre fun but theyre disappointingly shallow story-wise. I think even one additional chapter for each character would've greatly improved the first game, and I don't like that none of the stories have a connection with one another. It's not a journey with your party, it's a trip to the grocery store when all these randos are following you.

It's also unfortunate because Square Enix have DEEPLY STRUGGLED with putting out any sort of good stories. They keep focusing on reworking gameplay, hoping they can get an addictive RPG game style, but the stories are traaaaaaaaaash.They’ve had failure after failure for the past two decades.

If you give a game a story worth playing, people will grind through it no matter what. That's why people are still playing the original FF7 even though it's long and boring.
