Chapter Five (Tyrri), pt. 3:
Finale:
As the battle comes to a close and the crystals clatter to the ground, Catena falls to her knees and just starts sobbing
She’s failed. Everything she set out to do has crumbled, she can never go home anymore, there’s no hope of a second chance
God, what if he cuts off her funding? She wouldn’t even be able to stay in Seekersgate, she’d just be thrust out of both university and home
Dropping the crystal in her palm, Tyrri runs over to her
If there’s one thing that Tyrri (like all of the youngest octopath characters) can do, it’s be hopelessly kind to those who have wronged them
She wraps her arms around Catena and asks why the FUCK she would do what she did
I mean, what’s a girl to do but spill the beans, at that point?
Cat reveals that she was sent here on behalf of her father, Augustus Novi, to research into the magic of the Farlands, just like Tyrri
The goal? Profit. The guy ran a large conglomerate in the Banklands, and for some reason needed a shot of money into the system
Non-scholars tend to have a really hard time getting into Seekersgate to avoid profit-seekers from going in and wrecking the place, so imagine Augustus’s pleasure when his daughter proved to be gifted at magic
She was the perfect vessel through which House Novi could skyrocket themselves into fame and fortune and she FAILED.
Augustus was funding her studies, but he’d never do that now. Why would he?
The game exits the cutscene and prompts the player to Synergize
Instead of the player-interactive one that happened in chapter four, this one’s just gonna be a cutscene I think
Maybe not but again. Not a game dev. This game does not exist.
First synapse: Tyrri explains to Cat how her worth is not tied to a single person’s approval; she’s a kickass scholar that puzzled out her notes extremely quickly and was able to put them into practice with a lot of skill
No matter what her father wants her to do, his disappointment can never change the fact that she’s wicked smart and extremely talented
That doesn’t seem to be getting through to her; she’s still caught up in the idea that she failed
Second synapse: Fuck no you failed. That’s bullshit. Look what you’ve proven: by channelling your magic into these crystals and then taking it back onto yourself, you’ve lent an awful lot of credence to the idea of these crystals being an amplifier of magic in addition to their other properties, and saved an awful lot of time for us all
Third synapse: But look what I’ve done! This can never be forgiven!
Bullshit. The entire message of Tyrri’s journey has been that it’s never too late to change.
I mean, Professor Elber is taking a look at his priorities and appreciating his status as a teacher for the first time in ages
The University of Whitecrux is getting a heavy overhaul, with its corrupt former headmaster getting the boot
Who’s to say that Catena Novi, scholar of magic, can’t get up from this? Harder things have been done, after all
Exiting the Synergize segment, Cat just starts crying even more into Tyrri’s shoulder, apologizing over and over
Eventually the exhaustion of the past who-knows-how-long catches up to her and she passes out
Tyrri carries her out of the cave (Tyrri is very little but so is Cat. Perfect symbiosis), stopping at the Guardian’s spring
She explains the situation so that Cat doesn’t get like. Vapourized on the spot, and leaves shortly thereafter
Smash cut to a few weeks later after Cat has mostly recovered; the four others are standing over her bed as she wakes
Montage of the next few days; Cat and Tyrri bargain with the council of elders that run Seekersgate and Cat is able to get off with a few years of community service
The charge is effectively attempted robbery AND she was being coerced into doing it, and there’s plenty of evidence to prove that, so it’s not too hard to let her off at least fairly easily
After that, the full group of five goes over to the Wellspring with a theory to test and a proposal to make
If the crystals grow from magic being added to the water, would they be able to add their own? Would that do anything?
The Guardian accepts the offer, shows them how to do it, and for the first time everyone sees the process of the crystals growing
Human magic can be quite potent, moreso than wild magic, so the process is visible to the human eye
This process goes on for a while, and eventually the Guardian decides “You know what? You meddling kids have contributed so much magic to this cave. If I’m not mistaken, you wanted to be able to study them?”
The gang are gifted some small pieces of crystal! Big W for the magic majors and the geology major there (a little less for the biology majors but like. still)
Tyrri gets to work fashioning a way to replicate what she did fighting Cat (experimental echo), and ultimate settles on a glove with small bits of crystal at the ends of the fingers
The story comes to a close in the apartment that Cat and Tyrri decided to rent together to save on cash, after the completion of the echo glove
The final still is of Tyrri showing it off to the gang
Are they perfect? No, of course not.
But they’re different from where they began, and the world is as well.
And at the end of the day, can we hope for anything more than to change?

Now that I am out of class (and over the initial shock of Nintendo UK's stupidity) let's get to an old fashioned round of Direct predictions/hopes!
Xenoblade 3 dlc. I bought the expansion pass before launch and I would like to know what I bought (yes I am crazy and Monolith Soft owns my sorry little ass)
A new mainline Fire Emblem game. It's been 3 years! Give me Fire Emblem! I know I have 2 routes left in Three Hopes and one in Three Houses but please give me a new Fire Emblem or a remake of an old one
Botw 2. No explanation necessary. At least give an update. I do not expect a release date. A title would be nice tho. Gives us anything. Please.
Twilight Princess and Wind Waker were rumored again. They have been for years but honestly with botw 2 delayed to next year we dont have anything Zelda this year. So it would make sense Nintendo drops some remake this holiday season. I probably wouldnt buy either of them (at least not anytime soon) but porting them to Switch finally would be cool.
Honestly there isn't much else I really want because I have too many games as is. Just got into Final Fantasy XV and still have much Xenoblade 3 side content to go and Crisis Core is coming sometime this winter as well and botw 2 next year and Three Hopes in my backlog and just there is already so much.
I would be surprised if Three Hopes doesnt get dlc at some point so they will probably announce a season pass without really showing any content of it
I will drop everything and immediately buy a new Style Boutique/Style Savvy/Girls Mode game tho if it ever happens. Please don't let that series die with the 3ds. I loved those games
Like I mentioned before I want Square Enix and Monolith to remake Xenogears in the HD 2D artstyle of Octopath and Live a Live. Same for Chrono Trigger. Neither of those will happen. But I will include them for inclusivity's sake
Final Fantasy brained as I currently am, I would also still like to see ports of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy because I would like to play those games and have no machine capable of doing so (my laptop is not strong enough for games)
Xenoblade X won't happen until Xenoblade 3 dlc is over so nope. But please Nintendo. I am begging you. Release this game from hell. It deserves so much better.
Maybe we get an update on Pyra Mythra Smash amiibos? Tho that could also just be a tweet sometime. I dont remember what other amiibos are also coming. I just realized there will be a Sora amiibo?! Sometime. I havent played Smash in years
Honestly this list shows I really only play a few jrpg series and zelda oops. In my defense all these games take forever to play so can't really take on more series XD
#nintendo#nintendo direct#xenoblade#zelda#fire emblem#i probably have an old zelda xenoblade fire emblem summoning circle lying around somewhere#not that it has ever done me much good XD#this wont top the last direct#which had xenoblade 3#which was insane#fire emblem could never elicit that in me#and neither would botw 2#botw 2 could very well be mindblowing and hype af but wont have the sheer shock value of that xenoblade 3 reveal

Gotta give my man, Sakurai and his team, massive credit when it comes to Smash Bros.
He knew that licensing every third-party character would be a challenge, and yet he was determined to make sure that every character that was in the series would return for Smash Ultimate. He approached Konami for Metal Gear and Castlevania (twice if you include the echo fighter), Sega for Sonic, Bayonetta (with PlatinumGames) and Persona (sometime during development for DLC with Atlus), Capcom for Mega Man and Street Fighter (twice for including the echo fighter), Bandai Namco for Pac-Man, Square Enix for Final Fantasy (twice) and later Dragon Quest for DLC, SNK for Fatal Fury, and even rivaling gaming company Xbox Game Studios for Banjo-Kazooie (with Rare) and Minecraft with regards to playable characters alone.
And that's not even taking into account other properties not represented by playable characters, such as Shovel Knight (Yacht Club Games), Shantae (WayForward Technologies), Virtua Fighter (Sega), Monster Hunter (Capcom), Bomberman, and Ganbare Goemon (Konami), Rayman, Rabbids, and Assassin's Creed (Ubisoft), Fatal Frame (Koei Tecmonote ), Undertale (Toby Fox), Cuphead (StudioMDHR), Warframe (Digital Extremes), Super Mario RPG, World of Mana, and Octopath Traveler (Square-Enix), Fallout (Bethesda, ZeniMax Media, and later Xbox Game Studios), No More Heroes (Grasshopper Manufacture), and all the various Namco games such as Galaga, Tekken, and The Tower of Druaga and SNK representation beyond Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters. In total, that's at least 30 different franchises with 17 different companies and one sole individual (most likely) to negotiate with.
Just the fact that there are ten third-party fighters (Snake, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Ken, Cloud, Bayonetta, Simon, and Richter) at launch. Compared to Brawl's two and 3DS/Wii U's three, six if DLC is included, that's already a staggeringly impressive count. Then the first Fighters Pass gave everyone four more (Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, and Terry), with the second one giving even more (Steve & Sephiroth), bumping the number up to a whopping 16 (22 if the Hero's skins from III, IV, & VIII and Steve's skins of Alex, Zombie, and Enderman are included).
And they did it.
Smash has the rare distinction of getting these many varied third-party franchises and companies under a single roof, giving a lot of credence to the fact that the series itself has well and truly evolved from being something that simply celebrated Nintendo's history alone to celebrating the history of gaming as a whole.
This game...this franchise, is a fucking major crowning achievement for Sakurai, his team, Nintendo, and the gaming world at large. The first game started as something Sakurai would work on his own time that didn't have Nintendo characters, and even once Nintendo got involved they gave him a small budget and didn't plan to release the game outside of Japan. Things sure have come a long way since then.

Not much I can say about the direct. It is kinda a shame there wasn't anything Fire Emblem related, but hey, I can wait. I only really have 4 things to comment on.
I haven't played Xenoblade 2, so I have no real reaction towards Pyrra being in Smash, but I'm happy for others who have wanted some rep. I also like how deceptive the trailer is at first. They actively hid that this was a Smash trailer and those are my favorites.
Age of Calamity getting an expansion pass is sweet, especially since it seems they're finally making Purah and Robbie playable. Honestly, any excuse for me to keep playing this game, I'll take.
Speaking of Zelda, Skyward Sword coming to Switch means a lot to me since this was the first Zelda game I played. I might even get those new joycons for a real authentic feel.
But, honestly, none of this matters to me, because the moment Triangle Stradegy was shown, that was all I cared about. A jrpg that uses Final Fantasy Tactics style gameplay, has the art style of Octopath Traveler, and is a game where your actions and decisions actually matter and aren't a temporary change like most Telltale games?
I want it!!!
I am literally typing this while I wait for the demo to download because I will be playing it every day until I get this game.

Game of the Year 2020...?
Ive scrolled the list of games that came out this year to see what my GOTY ended up being, but turns out the only game I played in 2020 that released that year was, uh…….
Fucking good game but like I’m not gonna hand it GOTY by default (That goes to Hades, based solely impressions from other people). Actually, I’m not handing out any awards, really. So I guess I’m just gonna go over a bunch of the other games I did play last year, regardless of whether or not they came out then.
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition
A mate got me this for my birthday in December 2019, and unlike the other games I got then (Kirby Star Allies which I burned through that month and Octopath which I still haven’t played) I spent a fair few hours playing it last year. This was before the sequel was announced, and also a little bit after the fact- figured I should try and finish one before playing the other. Unfortunately, I have yet to purchase Age of Calamity nor finish Definitive Edition, because the former is expensive and the latter is expansive. Holy shit there’s so much fucking content in this game. I don’t think I ever will finish it to be honest, though despite the repetitiveness it never really felt boring to me. It’s the only Warriors/Musou game I’ve played, and I’d be interested in trying others based on the experience.
(I’m not playing Fire Emblem Warriors though fuck that)
Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC: The Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra
Sword and Shield felt somewhat lacking on release, and while the DLCs released this year did much to try and fix this its still a bit shit that it required an extra paycheck out of you to get the full game- outside of outsourced mobile games like Go and Shuffle, or services such as Bank or Home, Pokemon has never actually had DLC/microtransactions, so this was a little disappointing. I’d argue that it absolutely wasn’t worth it when Isle was released, as fun as the content was it was again, lacking. Crown Tundra I would argue exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations, however- the new and returning mons are cool and welcome (I despised Calyrex’s design on first reveal but their behaviour in story redeemed it more than enough), and the Max Lair Adventure offered a surprisingly replayable romp that has been great to just try and grind out with friends. I can’t say I’d recommend the DLC pack though- only if because you’ve probably made up your mind already as to whether or not you’re getting it, or this doesn’t apply to you at all. I could also put basically every main series Pokemon game on here, seeing as I’m pretty sure I nuzlocked every region at some point during the year, but I don’t want to make this *that* long.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate Expansion Pass
Smash is still Smash. I don’t find myself playing it much on my own, and even in Perth get-togethers weren’t super common last year. As neat as the DLC characters released this year are for the franchise as a whole, none of them convinced me to play significantly more than usual, and I can’t wrap my head around half of them, so.
Also, I’m still salty about Byleth, and I actually really liked Three Houses, it was my first FE game. Why the fuck wasn’t it Claude????
Rivals of Aether
On the other hand, in the last few months I’ve found myself grinding match after match of Rivals with one of my best mates and the game is a fucking blast, holy shit. I still haven’t bought it for myself, but its basically 100% of the reason I have played 0 smash for the last few months since we’re too busy mashing Orcane vs Ranno over and over and not really getting tired of it. It requires a specific type of person to get into it, but if you’re in that group then its just an excellent game.
VA-11 Hall-A
I first played VA-11 Hall-A (Vallhalla, since typing that is a pain) by pirating it and playing it on my laptop in the dead of night.
It quickly became one of my favourite games of all time.
When the Switch port dropped, I felt obliged to actually pay for it this time around, since the developers had more than earned my money. And then I replayed it again, playing it on my switch in the dead of night (At least this time I had the excuse of being a nightshift worker). With the sequel unfortunately delayed into 2021, it might be time to run it back once more or drag more of my mates into Glitch City since I already forcibly exposed a few of em to it.
The post-credits title screen is still my phone background.
Fallout: New Vegas
I don’t really have much to say about FNV that hasn’t been said already, especially considering HBomberguy’s recently released video, but it is also on my top 5 list and I only got around to playing Lonesome Road and Dead Money this year. Also went out of my way to 100% achievement complete the game on Steam, which I believe is the first time I’ve done that for a game.
Zero Escape Series (Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors, Virtue’s Last Reward, Zero Time Dilemma)
The Danganronpa series’ less colourful sibling, Zero Escape was a series I finally got around to finishing after having borrowed a friend’s copy of VLR back in high school and playing it wrong due to not deleting his save file (oops,). I think VLR remains my favourite, and I really hope the series continues at some point (unlikely as it seems now) considering how ZTD missed the mark pretty hard. The first 2 games are still excellent mystery games and a lot of fun, though you do need somewhat of a tolerance for words.
A Hat in Time
Oh god this game is so fucking cute. Also, just an excellent platformer. Is the DLC still on sale? I should buy that.
Fallout 4
Its just not New Vegas. It just isn’t. I really tried with this game, I really did. The gunplay is great, modding and building shit is fun, but its just not the same.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
A couple years ago I bought a SNES Mini, but until 2020 I didn’t really have a convenient way of playing it seeing as my monitor didn’t have an HDMI port. But now I do have one with one, so I got to start playing this classic! And then stopped because of uni. Should finish that, probably.
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon
Shit Keara I still have your copy sorry I’ll get back to it :<
Pokemon Stadium
I also managed to get my N64 up and running, and despite being the wrong region for most of the games available in local shops, I somehow managed to get Stadium for a great price. Got to dig out my old Red cartridge and anything. Fuck me though, this game is brutal. Seriously, Gen 1 battle mechanics are tough to deal with at the best of times, having to do battle after battle with said mechanics without losing is just nuts. I still haven’t managed to get Round 2 unlocked.
God, fuck you Blaine. Goddamn fire spin Rapidash motherfucker.
Super Mario 64 Speaking of, I managed to pick up a Japanese cartridge of SM64, complete with BLJ glitches and 3 entire save files. After much effort, I managed to actually get it working, and spent most of the night of Christmas getting smashed and trying to beat Bowser in the Fire Sea. I played a lot of the DS remake as a kid, and I feel like an idiot for struggling as much I did with the original.
This is all of course a buildup to the fact that I was lying about not assigning a GOTY. Because there is only one N64 game in my small collection deserving of Game of the Year, because its deserving of Game of the Year every year since its 1999 release.

Smashing Musings - Travelers
The Travelers Set Forth!
Just a musing for any future Smash title. Today, I’ll give a made-up moveset I made for the eight Travelers of the game Octopath Traveler.
Yes, I said the EIGHT Travelers. Ophilia, Cyrus, Tressa, Olberic, Primrose, Alfyn, Therion, H’annit - all eight of them with the same moveset. As per some discussion among certain comments, I decided to make them all alt choices for the same fighter (much like Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings, or the four Heroes), and give them all the weapons and elements available. Of course, their proportions can be adjusted to fit the same hitboxes (again, like with the Koopalings).
-= Specialty: Boost - As time passes, BP (Boost Points) will fill. The Traveler has up to 3 BP at a time. - Using Boost will activate 1 BP at a time (or deactivate them if there's no more to activate). - Active BP will apply to the next smash attack used, increasing its damage and launch power. - It can also alternatively apply when using Element Attack, HP Thief, or Leghold Trap.
- Neutral Attack: Three step sword combo. - Flurry Attack: Rapid knife jab. - Side Tilt Attack: Fires an arrow. - Up Tilt Attack: Waves a staff upward. - Down Tilt Attack: Rising axe swing. - Dash Attack: Spear lunge. - Side Smash: Cross Strike. Slashes forth twice with a sword. - Up Smash: Spearhead. Jabs spear straight upward. - Down Smash: Amputate. Slams axe forward, smashing ground around. Axehead is a meteor smash.
- Neutral Air Attack: Swings staff around once. - Forward Air Attack: Fires an arrow forward. - Back Air Attack: Thrusts knife behind self. - Up Air Attack: Swings sword upward in a wide arc. - Down Air Attack: Swings axe below in a wide arc.
- Grab: Snatches foe up close. - Pummel: Punches foe upside the face. - Forward Throw: Lunges foe with spear. - Back Throw: Pushes foe behind and backstabs them with knife. - Up Throw: Strikes upward with sword. - Down Throw: Slams foe into the ground with staff.
- Neutral Special: Element Attack: Hold to cycle through six different elements, and release to cast it. - Fire: Moderate damage and range. - Ice: Short range, but freezes foes. - Lightning: Tall hitbox. - Wind: Launches foes hard straight upward. - Darkness: No launch, but heavy damage and hitstun. - Light: Single hit, good at breaking shields. - The next use will begin with the next element in the cycle. - Each Boost level will make the attack bigger and stronger. There are essentially 24 variations overall for Element Attack, considering this. - Side Special: HP Thief: Strikes twice with dagger. A weak attack that recovers a slight bit of health with each hit. - Each Boost level will increase damage, and even further increase healing. - Up Special: Panther Dance: Leaps upward, surrounded by a reddish aura. - Will use a single Boost level if button is held long, becoming invulnerable for most of the move. - Down Special: Leghold Trap: Throws a trap forward that will capture the first foe it touches for a while. - Each Boost level increases the time that the foe will be captured for. - Shield Special: Boost: Each press will activate one BP available. Can activate up to 3 BP. - Final Smash: Journey's End: Delivers a burst of blue fire in front. Leads to a cinematic attack where all eight Travelers deliver their strongest attacks to the affected foes.
- Entrance: Bids farewell to the green-capped traveler. - Idle: Holds hand to hip while tapping foot. - Idle:Adjusts arms into a fighting stance.
- Up Taunt: Spins in place once and throws a hand into the air. - Side Taunt: Brandishes a weapon (in the same pose). - Down Taunt: Kneels down to write in a journal.
- Victory: Unique animation that changes based on the Traveler: -- Ophilia prays with Aelfric’s Lanthorn by her feet. -- Cyrus reads from a book. -- Tressa adjusts her cap and puts a hand on her hip. -- Olberic crosses his arms and turns away slightly. -- Primrose does a small dance. -- Alfyn wipes his brow and hangs onto his satchel strap. -- Therion turns away from the camera. -- H'aanit shoulders her bow as Linde relaxes by her. - Victory: Looks to the distance and ventures away. - Victory: Stops by a journal pedestal to record progress.
-= Palettes =- - Ophilia - Cyrus - Tressa - Olberic - Primrose - Alfyn - Therion - H'aanit
-= Extra =- - Idle stand, walk animation, and dash animation are based primarily on their overworld sprites. - Victory tune may be the same from Octopath Traveler, loop included. - Kirby’s Traveler hat could be based on the Sorcerer job, or the green-capped traveler who used to serve as the save point in Octopath Traveler’s demo (and doubles as a relic from the Bravely games).

E3 Ratings
EA
Microsoft: 7/10 Not bad overall. They showed some decent games and announced what seems like an overall more appealing version of Stadia. as well as Project Scarlett. The only thing that really drags it down for me is the over-reliance on trailers that didn’t actually show off much gameplay on so many of their announcements.
Bethesda: 2.5/10 Dear God... I have never witnessed such an obvious display of blatant lying through teeth and emotional manipulation. Casually understating the shitshow that was (and still is) Fallout 76. Furthermore, the actual announcements were most underwhelming. The only things they REALLY had going for them were Ghostwire, Wolfenstein, and DOOM... None of which are actually technically even Bethesda IP’s. In fact, those three announcements are the ONLY reason why I don’t drop the score down to negative numbers.
Devolver: WTF/10 This show was just pure insanity. I don’t even know what to say. I guess all I really CAN say is that it’s probably not safe for younger viewers.
Ubisoft: 6.5/10 They had a decent start with Watchdogs, and MythicQuest was a fun announcement. As time passed, though, I feel like they kinda started to lose momentum. SO much Tom Clancy back-to-back. Also if you have to buy both Uplay+ AND Stadia, that’s... Yikes. Roller Champions looks fun, though, as does Gods and Monsters. Not a bad note to end on. The Just Dance sequence did cause me to tune out for a bit though, despite the amount of hype they tried to give it.
Square Enix: 8.5/10 Obviously the highlight here is FF7. They jump right in with the big guns, and BOY were those some big guns. There was some other cool stuff there, of course. Life is Strange 2 for those who are invested in the story, a few more Final Fantasy Titles (Remastered 8, Crystal Chronicles, and Shadowbringers), and Octopath for PC. Outriders looks like another generic shooter, but at least the guns are cool. Lastly, Avengers was interesting, though a little underwhelming... The showed virtually no gameplay, and oh yeah, spoiled Cap’s death in the beginning... And then heavily implied later that he survived because, otherwise, you’d only be playing him at the start. Also, it’s online. Overall, GREAT start, pretty good middle, and decent, if not a little underwhelming, finish.
Nintendo: 9/10 Though a Direct lacks the same level of energy as a well-put-together conference, Nintendo had a LOT of cool stuff to show this year. We got not one, but TWO Smash reveals. On top of that, we got more info on Platinum’s new title, Astral Chain, as well as DaemonXMachina. Of course, the big highlights people will no doubt remember are Animal Crossing, the revival of Panzer Dragoon, Link’s Awakening, and a NEW Zelda game set after BotW. Overall, a pretty solid year for Nintendo.
So yeah, in short: EA doesn’t really deserve the time or attention, Microsoft had a pretty decent showing, Bethesda is dead to me, Devolver was a drug trip, Ubisoft was pretty alright, Square Enix had a pretty damn good year, and Nintendo, in my opinion, barely beat them out.

AYYYYYYY, loved the Nintendo Direct from yesterday (9/13/18)!!! So many fun looking games coming out in the future, honestly I can’t wait to get them (but I’m back in college for my Junior year so maybe I’m gonna wait on purchases? ... Nah lol).
-Luigi’s Mansion 3 looks good so far, but since we haven’t seen enough I don’t feel like I can make a complete decision on it. I mean, I’m still planning on getting it when it comes out cause the other two were fun.
-OBVIOUSLY Animal Crossing is a must. It’s gonna be great to have it for the switch and to just sit back, relax, catch some fish, pay off Nook’s “generous” debt, and accidentally pass 12 hours of a day without realizing it.
-Isabelle in Smash actually surprised me, I was not expecting another AC character, but Nintendo always pulls out the bamboozles. She looks fun to play (but my boy Richter is still at the top sorry to say) and also doesn’t look like an echo fighter, which is cool beans.
-Town looks like a fun RPG (I have a soft spot for RPG’s, I need to get Octopath which I hear is super). If they can pull off having the whole game take place in a single town, that’d be awesome.
-Daemon x Machina also looks like a fun game. Who wouldn’t want to pilot and gundam-esque machine, slowly turn characters into androids (or cyborgs?), and deal with giant situations.
-Also, can we just mention that they gave the Splatoon Update an anime opening, like... what? lol, it was cool, but... what?
2019 is looking to be a good year so far, along with the new Yoshi game, a bunch of FF’s, and other games, it seems like Nintendo’s gonna have a fun line up for all of us. I’m already hyped, and I can’t wait to see what else they’re gonna talk about (more smash characters/new content? where was metroid at? Street Fighter V Turbo Deluxe Ultra Championship Edition Plus Ultra Combo Breaker & Knuckles?)

If I had a printer I would be unstoppable. Anyway completely unrelated to that here are the smash or pass poll results of the ones we've done so far:
Anyway Therion is awarded the most smashable at a whopping 69%. That's right baby 69% of people smashed Therion while Mattias was voted the least smashable at 69.4% of people voting pass.
The greatest sample size came from Agnea though I think sample sizes are important but that doesn't change that there are still a lot of people are down bad for ya boi Therion here.
The man in purple literally surpassed the man himself Osvald, and Temenos and Partitio are, according to data, about the same amount smashable at a 0.4% difference.
A lot of people passed on Agnea and I'm just now realizing she's the only girl we did the poll on. I got this poll still running right now though on the sexiest female Octopath II boss though and I put that one up for a week instead of a day because I need knowledge.
If anyone wants to do more just let me know.

An hour late again, (damn you, college) but here’s my thoughts on the September 2022 Nintendo Direct:

Ideas for Smash DLC:
a Hunter (Monster Hunter) --- Rathalos is already in the game, Capcom already has connections with Smash Bros via MegaMan and Street fighter. Has a variety of weapons that coud make for a unique fighter.
Solaire (Dark Souls) --- an Amiibo already exists, Dark Souls Remastered released on Switch, Dark Souls is Developed by From Software, Published by NamcoBandai (who co-developed Smash 4 and Ultimate) Attacks with Swords and Miracles. Could incorporate a limited Stamina mechanic that balances attacks that are extremely powerful.
Geno (Super Mario RPG) --- Copyright owned by SquareEnix. Exists within Smash Ultimate as a Spirit. Could be an upgrade from Mii Costume to fighter, a la Chrom, K Rool and Isabell. Sakurai wanted to include Geno in Brawl.
Sora (Kingdom Hearts) --- Kingdom Hearts has a History on Nintendo hardware. A Sword character that can use magic. Used to promote potential Kingdom hearts ports? Excellent music. (Though all of this could be said about any other Final Fantasy fighter as well. Noctis/Squall/Zack instead?)
Octopath Traveler(s) (Octopath Traveler) --- Switch exclusive SquareEnix JRPG that received many accolades. Attacks can be pulled from the 16 different classes within the game since each character can re-class freely.. Each alternate costume could be one of the 8 playable characters. Stage could be a traveling stage that changes layout and hazards as the background changes, like the games title screen.
Felix (or Matthew) (Golden Sun) --- Obscure Nintendo IP. Isaac exists within Smash Ultimate as an Assist Trophy, however IIRC Felix’s game, The Lost Age, sold better. A fighter that attacks with a sword as well as “earth based Psynergy” (plant and rock magic.)
Elma (Xenoblade X) ---- Monolith already supports smash in the form of Shulk. A character who specializes in debuffing enemies. Has two weapons, one for melee, one for ranged combat. (Would likely get passed over in favor of Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2)

E3 2018 Thoughts on Nintendo
So Nintendo over the years has learned to show only what’s coming out soon rather than bait fans with a teaser for a game that is way out in production (Looking at you Sony and Microsoft). In addition, they used their direct this year to push forward the versatility of the Switch as well as give a huge show of appreciation to the Smash Pro community that pretty much built itself from the ground up. I will give Nintendo this much, their booth this year, while not as cool as the Mario one last year, did have a lot going on and the game lines for just Smash and Let’s go Pokemon were over 4 hours long. They had to cut them off on all three days and set up areas for people to watch others play on big screens.
Also both of their tournaments did strong numbers this year, showing that Splatoon and Smash are still hitters in the E-sports area. Though now I hope Arms gets in there because that game is fun.
Dameon X Machenia reminded me a hell of a lot of the Super robot Wars games that come out for Gundam and other series. Yet this was very different. Flying robots to fight what looks like monsters/mecha seems like a fun way to pass the time. Also, based on the Tree house showing, there’s a customization element going on not just with the avatar (which you can chose your gender) but also the robot itself and it’s weapons. There’s also an area that looks to allow online play along with a single player campaign. Again, mixed feelings, unless you can invite people into the server that you want playing with you so that you know no jerks will just jump in and ruin the game. Over all I like what I see, but it’s a ways out. Nice of them to start with something exciting.
Super Mario Party looks amazing. So apparently we can have four players to one switch via the tv set up, but also two switches can be made to change up the board, which brings up the question, can you have more than four players playing if you have three or more switches? It’s Mario Party so most people know the drill for this one. I do like that they kept in a lot of things from the older titles and apparently we’re going to have Bowser as an option to play. This should be interesting to see, and probably will be a buy for me once I’m done with my back log of games.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Torna the Golden DLC. This could practically be a game in and of itself given the way that the story is taking shape here. It looks really interesting and is certainly filling in gaps in the story that we had from XC2. What I’m wondering is if Xeno will rival FF, Tales and DQ in the future with the story telling and now the world building. I should note too that the Challenge mode brought back in Shulk and Fiora from the first Xenoblade Chronicles story. Visually the game looks amazing and really got me excited to buy the DLC, and, apparently there is a second edition that let’s you get both the DLC and the original game. Similar to the FF XV Royal edition.
This one is the one that I’ve personally been waiting for. As a Fire Emblem Fan since way back from the Game Boy Advanced Version, it’s exciting to see an new FE show up on the Switch. Fire Emblem Three Houses showed up and wow. Since this is clearly an incomplete game there’s things that need to be worked on, but from what we saw I would say it’s really visually amazing. Reportedly the artist that did the art for the Uta wa no Prince Sama series is providing the art here. Though I don’t know because others are saying it reminds them of the artist from the Persona Series. I will say though that the character’s look amazing, and the fact that it’s not an Avatar in this game means that a lot of the story and depth of the story will rely on the characters interacting with one another. Another cool thing was the system where you can train the characters in different triangle weapons, which can become useful. From what we’ve seen there appears to be an open world aspect of this, and you can run around. Also units now have warriors with them and can create formations based on what you need. Over all this looks fun and the animation for the cut scenes are top notch. I won’t lie I’m a bit biased on this one.
Fortnite was a good move on the switch’s part, and the fact that they showed it in a way that is different than how Sony, Microsoft, or PC shows the game means that they can pull in players that normally may not want to play this. The vibrant color had me going “Wait…is that Fortnite? What the hell? Is it really that goofy?” as most version I’ve seen have had people wearing serious clothing rather than the goofy stuff that you can get. Honestly, if I was good at shooters and liked them, this trailer would have made me pick it up. I hope that people playing on PC and Xbox are having fun with Nintendo players…Sony, I know you were burned in the past by Nintendo, and have issues with Microsoft and for some odd reason hate PCs, but come on…stop locking people out of playing with others. Sheesh!
Hollow Knight, another interesting showing here. Hollow Knight I heard was a good get for the switch, given that it’s a fan favorite. Mix of platforming and fighting will work well on the switch. To be honest while it’s cute and all I’ll have to see if I want to get it.
Killer Queen Black is a surprise for some people, as it was a small arcade game that had a loyal following but was believed to not be able to be put on a console system. Apparently they did it. It seems to be a timed exclusive so it may not stay just on the Switch. Looks like fun, but I’m not a bee fan honestly. But it looks nice and I’m sure that other people will love to play it.
Overcooked 2, I can’t wait to get. It seems like an awesome game and one that I will be playing a lot with friends. Reminds me a bit of dinner dash but with puzzle elements and strategy. Should be a good buy for people that want to have something a bit more relaxing to play in it’s own way.
Octopath Traveler showed up again, and mentioned a new Demo. Square later went on at E3 to say that they’re going to make a division for the Switch so that’s a promising thing. The game’s demonstration at the tree house has made this a day one for me, which is rare outside of again, Fire Emblem. So this has me very excited and I hope to see more games like this and others from Square Enix on the Switch.
Let’s Go Pokemon: Pikachu/Evee. Pretty much seemed like Pokemon Yellow. I mean, you play with Pikachu following you around rather than in the ball, and it combines elements of pokemon go. On top of that you can transfer pokemon from go to the game, and you get a mew in the new pokeball add on...although I wish the price was a bit lower for that pokeball. Sheesh!
They had a quick run down of games coming out including: Octo Expansion, SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy, Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Ninjala, Paladins: Realm Royale, Roller Coaster Tycoon Switch, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (may have shown this it went fast), sushi Striker.
Smash Brothers Ultimate, I know some were disappointed that this took up so much time, but there’s something that has to be said. This is really, outside of maybe the bigger tournaments, that Nintendo has shown that they have been paying attention to the pro scene for their fighting game. With all the tweeks that they did to this game, and allowing the characters in there the way that they did, they’re going to be a contender at larger game tournaments like Evo and the like. Back when the switch was first show in 2017 there was the whole E-sports section, and I think that Nintendo is actually looking into that with some of it’s games. The various things, like the one on one fighting being made to be more devastating when you have solo fights means that, for pros, the game will move faster. Having the different stage styles also means it’s better for the competition scene so that the game can be played there.
I’m glad to see Ice Climbers back, all my Fire Emblem characters are still there, Wii Fit is back, the amazing Pit is there still, I love that we now have Daisy –my girl –as a character to play as, and we finally got Ridley –after all this time… Now Sakurai, please put in Takamaru from the Mystery of Muramasa castle as not an assist and I will praise you to the high heavens. Oh yeah and Proto and Base (Bass?) are in Megaman’s smash now. (Proto as an echo fighter please? Or Zero?)
As for the other games that are coming out to Switch, while they didn’t show them all…here’s the list from E3 2018 of the games that are coming:
Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion
Bomber Crew
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy –Rumors are going around that Spyro may also be coming too
Dead Cells
Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten DX
Dragon Quest XI –apparently yes it is coming for the switch.
The Elder Scrolls: Legends –tired of this being on your phone…use it on the Switch on the go.
Fallout Shelter
Fate Extella Link –Hey what do you know…the Fate series is now on the Switch
FIFA 19
Freedom Planet
Gal Metal –music game that has an interesting story
Galak-Z: Variant S –You like Gundam? You like arcade games? Well this is right up your alley
Harold Halibut
Just Dance 2019
Kingdom: Two Crowns
LEGO DC Supervillains
Little Dragons Café –What if you could raise dragons in the world of Harvest Moon, same creators
Mario + Rabbids DLC
Mario Tennis Aces –This was kind of interesting to see in the Tree house, making me consider getting it.
Mega Man 11
My Friend Pedro –Yeah the gag game that is coming to PC from Digital Revolver, it’s on the Switch.
My Hero Ones Justice –For those of us who want to smash things with Lord Murder Explosion (Bakugo)
NBA Live 19
Planet Alpha
Raji: An Ancient Epic
Shining Resonance Refrain –Kind of wish this one was shown, but Sega does what Sega does…
Spintires: MudRunner –basically you want to play with all terrain vehicles…then here you go.
State of Mind
Super Meat Boy Forever
Team Sonic Racing
Trials Rising –wish they would have shown some of this
Valkyria Chronicles 4 –Sega….you should have had your own direct…seriously
'V-Rally 4
Wargroove
Arcade Donkey Kong
That’s a lot of games coming out for the Switch…most of these would be fun to play…and that’s not even listing the ones that were already out prior to E3.
Over all, for presentation regarding the use of the Direct, I’d say A- to a B mostly because of the variety. Though I do think that they could have elongated their direct to give more showings of the games that weren’t Smash that were coming to the Switch.

Having just watch the same Direct you have, Nintendo’s presentation may not have been as explosive as expected, but DAMN! Smash looks simply incredible and so, because there is a lot to cover, including new fact sheets for Fire Emblem Three Houses and Super Mario Party, here’s a Digest dedicated to catch you up on what you may have missed, starting with a video of the direct:

LOS ANGELES, June 12, 2018 – Nintendo opened its activities for the annual E3 2018 video game trade show with a bang – and a smash. Showing world-first footage of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo shared details about the latest entry in a series with sales of more than 40 million units worldwide. A new game built for the Nintendo Switch system, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lets up to eight players square off in action-packed battles that are all about smashing beloved video game characters off the screen. Legendary game worlds and fighters collide in the ultimate showdown at E3 2018, which runs through June 14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, and the arrival of Epic’s Fortnite on Nintendo Switch demonstrate the strong momentum Nintendo Switch continues to have through 2018 and beyond.”
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will include every single fighter ever featured in the series’ nearly two-decade run, making it one of the biggest crossover events in gaming history. Fans can enjoy returning favorites like Ice Climbers and Pokémon Trainer, as well as newly announced fighters like Ridley from the Metroid series and Inkling from the Splatoon series. The game supports a variety of controller options, including Nintendo GameCube controllers (original or newly designed), Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. With Nintendo Switch, players can throw down whenever and wherever they like in Handheld or Tabletop mode while enjoying online play.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate combines many stages and new items, with gameplay that makes it easy for players of all skill levels to jump in. All current Super Smash Bros. series amiibo figures are compatible with the game, and any fighter’s amiibo figure from other series will also be supported. Super Smash Bros.
