Do you think Eight remembers their name? It's implied at the end of the Splatoon 2 DLC that they get their memories back, but all through Side Order, they're still referred to as Eight, which means either they don't fully have their memories back, or they're much happier as Eight than as whoever they were before, so they kept going by Eight.

The line in Marina's Dev Diary where Eight smiles really widely after Marina calls her Eight and not Agent 8 makes me think the second one. Also makes me wonder what living in Octo Valley is like

if Acht is any clue, Eight might literally be Eight's actual original name, even if they never remember it XD

Octarians are many things- soldiers, engineers, hackers, DJs..... but their leader's name was Octavio, a name based on the Latin word for 8.... There was a slacker down there who's name was just 8 in German.... There's this funny thing actually, that Eight was called Acht in some of the other translations of Splatoon-

lore i've got for her is that she constructed weapons for the octarian army, like the weapons the tentacle troopers and octolings use on the battlefield, and when she escaped to the surface, became something of a weaponsmith for underground turf war, building and modifying weapons that would NOT be approved for official turf war like, at all, ever.

she works for grizzco to fund her illegal weapon-crafting endeavors.

the idea for her came about from this outfit i had my octoling in lol, so her usual gear is the lo-vis visor, (modified) hacker jacket, and punk whites. as for her main, something she either built or modified. i'm kind of leaning towards a heavily modified n-zap

Lyon is a male octoling with light pink tentacles (with pale yellow accents), the raspberry eyes, and the slit eyebrow. Taller than average, he's punk, has ear piercings.

He fled from Octo Valley to pursue sweet sweet rock music, stayed in Inkopolis but left again, wandered the desert for a while and ended up in Splatsville where he's now a guitarist, drummer and singer. People tend to be afraid of him and think he's quick to fight, but while he takes no shit from anyone he's usually nice and he's very loyal to his friends.

Link is a part of a TRON crossover I wrote during April Camp NaNoWriMo 2022. He's a Splatoon 2 player character whose real-life player is a dataminer. So Link, who has no idea he's in a videogame, has to venture out of Inkopolis, where he's always lived, into the code of the game itself. He's a B-rank N-Zap '89 main who has to fight against programs with discs! There's a lot of themes about identity, reality, and, although I didn't quite get far enough in the fic to carry out this theme, losing your childhood. Very strong "we have the right to mod our own hardware/software" energy, though. Outside of being a hacker against his will, Link likes ranked battles, gaming/building his PC, and a good hot meal after a day of hard work. He's aromantic and asexual.

Koa — Known as "Agent Sakura" and the resident hacker in the NSS. She doesn't go on many missions. Instead she uses her hacking skills to assist the members who help Octolings escape from the underground domes, mostly by accessing maps and information about the domes and the soldiers and guiding the NSS through their missions. When she does go on missions, she wields a modded Inkbrush.

Ruby — Known as "Agent Duchess" within the NSS. She rarely goes on missions but is surprisingly skilled at gathering intel, due to others' perception of her being "just a (dumb) fashion model". She also helps escaped Octolings adjust to their life on the surface, and uses her wealth to ensure they have what they need to start out. On the rare occasion she goes on missions, her weapon of choice is the Undercover Brella.

Cerrin — Known as "Agent Song" within the NSS. His main mission is to help Octolings escape the domes. He's very good at keeping them calm as they escape, and along with his sister does whatever it takes to get the escapees to the surface. His weapons of choice are the Heavy Splatling and the Slosher, and if he's (somehow) disarmed he's more than capable of fighting hand-to-hand.

Ursula — Known as "Agent Aria" within the NSS. Her main mission is the same as Cerrin's - to help Octolings escape the underground domes. She usually handles defending the group when needed, and her weapon of choice is the N-Zap. Like her brother, she is able to handle herself in hand-to-hand combat, should she be disarmed.

Dion — Known as "Agent Prince" within the NSS. He generally stays away from the more dangerous missions, and instead helps escaped Octolings adjust to life on the surface along with Ruby. If he's needed for a mission, though, he chooses Dualies as his main weapon.

just had my first encounter with splatoon 1 hackers (in turf war and not ranked, fortunately)

splatfest stage (night time with splatfest opening jingle, squid sisters sang now or never. no ink me up though. abxy friend list)

urchin underpass (after it was over i realized... that was not hammerhead bridge or saltspray rig. urchin wasn't even in rotation)

there were only 2 of us at spawn at the start (and then after it started the rest just... appeared in the middle?)

the teammate i spawned with had elite octoling goggles and the srl coat

another one of my teammates was just throwing whole masses of splat bombs at once (not bomb rush style, like one throw would be like 5 of them)

there was no enemy team (not even with 0p on the results, just nothing where they would be) (i have a feeling all 8 of us may have been on the same team, and the results don't have a way to show more than 4. i didn't count how many of them i had but one teammate i remember seeing wasn't on the results screen)

actually now that i'm looking at the results (i recorded like half of it) i'm noticing that the names on the initial screen with our victory animations are almost entirely different from the ones on the list afterwards

someone had one death somehow (remember that this is urchin underpass? surrounded by walls? i'm not forgetting a place to jump out of bounds normally am i?)

anyway since one of my purposes doing turf is to get points toward unlocking gear slots, i just tried to ink as much of the stage as possible. maybe see if we could get to 100%? i think my teammates were more concerned with squid partying though so we only got up to 86%

Dream of 4/10/23

A splatoon 3 dream where the DLC had you play as Agent 3 you were sent back to Inkopolis and the whole city was destroyed, empty, trashed, and abandoned. (The first level was the tutorial level from splat 1) You were trying to figure out who did it and as you got deeper and deeper into the city you saw octarians lived there now. They were all trying to move into the surface secretly into the abandoned plaza hopefully with no sound so no one could disturb them but now that you found them you were supposed to drive them back underground for some reason. The story is hazy for me but I remember there was this evil group of cuttlefish who were dumping some type of ink pollution into the waters and underground it was some sort of a mind controlling device as well so as soon as they hit water they would release these brainwaves into the water. I remember this really specific cutscene where it told the history of octarians sort of like the walk towards asgores room in undertale where every enemy and boss were telling you the story. At the end of the story you could see Agent 8 sitting on DJ Octavio's UFO kettle (splatoon 1) she had CQ Cumber in her lap and it's revealed HE was the one brainwashing everyone and his motives were that he wanted to go back to the pre-evolution era I don't remember why exactly but you had to defeat a brainwashed Agent 8 and there was this really unsettling eerie cutscene where after you defeat her, her face was just straight up missing. No sound or anything it was just really off putting. I remember a part where there was a new Salmon Run map that was unfinished but hackers were making it so people could play on it in turf war, but it didn't work and caused everyone to infinitely fall through the ground. It was some sort of Industrial Plant (Similar to the one you see in the background of Marooners Bay I'll put a pic) I remember before the credits there was a cutscene where Callie and Marie sing Calamari Inkcantation but it was super slow, sad, and like, empty sounding. It also had english lyrics that were subtitled in the game underneath the animation and they were singing about how certain things can be portrayed differently by different people and that the only person who can judge something it's worth is you. Also playable cuttlefish was a thing. they did not look like anything like an inkling/octoling and was really ugly LFMAO. This is all I remember. Very eerie. It all was

I wanted to do a couple seasonal outfits, here's winter featuring Goggle because them both using the same pose here is so silly!

Here's the summer fit! She kinda looks like Poipo from the manga but She's hangin out with 8 it's cool. I have never done any poses with the blaster before and I found the clash neo first.

And The Ranked Fit now with 99% more swim and Run speed up! She's with Hachi and their poses look awesome next to each other! They look like super heroes in my opinion.

And my current outfit! I wanted to build off the Hacker Jacket and like what I came up with. That Octoling is tired of hearing Eurydice talk about all her friends and why they should totally join her friend group!

Not tagging this with system shock because it's like. Very far removed they aren't even the same species. But I scribbled down hacker as an octoling and goggles as an inkling and decided to actually colour them and shit. Because I love combining my interests to keep myself sane.

This is something that has LONG been misinterpreted.

Yes they are “less intelligent” than the Octolings, but you have to keep in mind what level the Octolings operate on.

They’re an entire species of hyper-intelligent geniuses that make technology so complicated inkling society can barely even process it. Even less talented hackers like Acht who slacked off in school can datamine any given database like it’s nothing, Octolings are with very few exception one of the smartest species alive.

Other octarian species being less intelligent than an Octoling does not make them stupid, certainly not to a sub-human degree. The most we see in-game about the other species from an insider perspective would be the mem cakes.

The way Eight describes them in poetry is definitely more like old friends as equals rather than like. Pets.

I know the mini-comics in the art book aren���t made with intent to be taken too seriously, but it’s worth noting the Octarians are just normal guys in those.

It is worth note though that there’s also a more serious comic which features these guys in speaking roles.

Like they’re not pets or beasts or whatever, these are guys. They’re dudes. They work a 9-5 and have a wife and kids. Non-octoling Octarians are sapient. Every Salmonid is also sapient that’s why they wear pants.

Mimi is a mimic octoling, genetically modified to have greater control over the pigment and texture of both her skin and tentacles, which lets her pass as other species. For several years she acted as a Surface Agent for Octo Valley, a sort of spy tasked with gathering information on inkling weaponry and settling surface-based disputes. During this time she disguised herself as an anemone, employed undercover as a referee for the Inkopolis turf lobby, getting beaten on and bitten by rowdy squid kids daily. These days, with tensions easing between the Valley and Inkopolis, she lives in Splatsville, acting as a Valley ambassador of sorts for Octarians that live on the surface.

Mimi is not what most people would consider friendly, but she is fiercely loyal to her people and harbors deep concerns about the fragility of Octo Valley's culture when so many of its young people have left to live on the surface. It's preferable to their total extinction, but she still mourns for what was lost between this and the gradual failure of their infrastructure underground in the wake of the great turf war.

When she's not warring with her existential fears, she has a side hobby running a food review blog.

"Ursula... I don't think it'll be a problem..."

"Well. I for one don't want to wait the rest of the night at the station for the earliest train back to Splatsville..."

"That's right! Waiting would be pointless, and you'd at least be able to get some sleep at our place!"

"Yeah... Sleep sounds pretty good right about now."

[Ruby smiles a little. She doesn't need another hint to understand -- Cerrin is tired, and getting him home is the most important thing right now. She moves to tap Ursula on the shoulder, gesturing for the purple Octoling to follow before she starts to lead Cerrin to her car. Ursula follows, albeit reluctantly, leaving Koa and Dion with Akihiko.]

"We should get going."

"I call shotgun!"

"...Right."

[The three are silent as they walk across the hospital parking lot and toward Akihiko's car. When they arrive, Dion immediately hops in the front passenger seat, making note of how normal the vehicle seems.]

"...Huh. I was expecting something fancier from a rich guy like you."

[Akihiko laughs softly.]

"Sorry to disappoint."

[A silence lingers over them once more as Akihiko starts the car and drives out of the parking lot. When they're about half way to his home, he speaks again.]

"Koa... You're a rather skilled hacker, if I'm recalling correctly?"

"Woah, wait, you're a hacker? That's so cool!"

"I guess...? What of it?"

[The red-orange Octoling pauses for a moment.]

"I have a favor to ask of you."

Splatoon had an update where it added “Cheese Mode”. This mode was just the exact same as the first, casual game mode, but with everyone wearing comical cheese hats. The icon for the mode was the transgender flag. Everyone agreed that this was the best thing to ever happen to Splatoon.
