OCTOBER NEWSLETTER
Tourist season has finally come to an end! Beachgoers no longer have to pay admission or show a season badge to access the beach, and evenings on the Asbury boardwalk come with that crisp, cool air that feels really nice, not to mention the sweet smell of apple cider donuts. Shifting gears from summer solidly into fall, you start to see pumpkin decorations on porches and leaves turning yellow and bright orange. Exciting!

Happy October! This month is a relatively calm one on the official side of things, so take the time to get caught up on threads or plan out ways to celebrate the autumn season.
Housekeeping
Current Month in TOA: Harpstring Moon
Thank you again to everyone who submitted and voted on our anniversary mission tasks! We’ve added new prompts for the skill points with the most votes. Check them out here!
Due to a lack of entries, the 2nd TOA zine will not at this point in time be moving forward. We may try again in the future if there looks to be enough interest.
Don't forget to take a moment to fill out this month's feedback form! But please read the section below first.
Other
The mod team is constantly working to improve TOA's combat, even when combat events are not actively happening. One of the big things that we've noticed tripping everyone up is the speed stat.
From the combat manual:
A character’s Speed affects their opponent’s accuracy, similar to Avoid, but interacts directly with an opponent’s current Speed. When two units enter combat, the character with the highest Speed will be designated as the character holding the Speed stat, but the other character’s Speed will be added to or subtracted from that number. For example, Character A has +4 Speed and attacks Character B, who has +2 Speed. Character A will be designated as the holder of the speed stat, but Character B’s current speed (+2) will be subtracted from Character A’s, so that the matchup will essentially be +2 Speed vs +0 Speed. This +2 Speed will then work like +2 Avoid and subtract 2 from Character B’s rolls against them. Speed also works with negative numbers. If Character A has +4 Speed and attacks Character B, who has -2 Speed, the negative speed will be added to Character A’s current Speed. The matchup then becomes the equivalent of +6 Speed vs +0 Speed. Speed caps at +6, so even if character B had -4 Speed, Character A would only ever gather +6 Speed from the difference between their stats. At +6 Speed, a character will lose its avoid bonus, but will be able to initiate a follow-up attack. This allows the character to attack again after their opponent’s counterattack, or launch two counterattacks of their own in a row. The table below illustrates how Speed interacts between two players.
As the speed stat works currently, negative speed does not exist in practice. In a matchup, speed is pooled together between player and enemy, and the character with the highest starting speed takes the combined number, always leaving the other character with 0 speed in practice.
We're considering changing it in one of two ways:
Speed will be pooled to determine if a character can use a follow-up attack, but then any remaining speed stat on a character - positive or negative - will be converted to avoid. - Player with +2 speed versus Enemy with +2 speed would put +2 avoid on both. - Player with -2 speed versus Enemy with +2 speed would put -2 avoid on Player and +2 avoid on Enemy - Player with +4 speed versus Enemy with -2 speed would pool both speed to give Player +6 and a follow-up attack. No avoid conversion when a follow-up triggers
Speed will only exist as a positive number. All items and abilities in the combat manual that inflict a speed debuff will be retuned, most of which will become -avoid but some may be changed in other ways. Tentatively, speed will otherwise work exactly like it does in its current iteration, except that there will be no instances of negative speed coming into play. This may require that we raise the speed cap, however, so that it's not as hard to trigger follow-up attacks.
Of course, you can also vote to leave the system as-is. Regardless, we appreciate your feedback!

Hello everyone!
As I take on more projects and expand my practice, it feels prudent to write monthly newsletter posts to keep followers up to date on what projects I'm currently undertaking. So here's the update for October/November 2024!
Zines
Currently I'm participating in two zines, both of which will likely be released in November!
One is the Detective Conan Fanzine, which is dedicated to the 26 movies of the franchise. I was assigned Movie 2, and I've posted a preview below! The full illustration will be available on INPRNT after the zine releases.
The other is the Counter-Pale Resistance (@de-fanzine-cpr-pale), which is a Disco Elysium fanzine. Participants take inspiration from song lyrics to create their piece, whether it's an illustration, comic, or writing. I created an illustration of Harry and Dolores for this zine! I quite like this piece-- it will be available on INPRNT after the zine releases, and I'll also be making gold foil postcards of it. Stay tuned!
Additionally, COMPASS: A Heishin Anthology (@haidocityzines), which I did several illustrations for, has been released for free digitally! Download your copy here. There are also merch bundles remaining if you're interested.
Merchandise
I've been putting together a Kaishin merch bundle in the past several months to go with a polished print version of Breaking Stasis (link goes to the original version-- polished version will be uploaded at a later date), my 2021 Kaishin Secret Santa manga. There's going to be a bookmark, a memopad, and a postcard in addition to the book. I'm waiting for the last of the merch samples to arrive! When they do, I'll photograph them and open up pre-orders.
Remember this? The pages are now fully toned and I've fixed the illustrations that were bothering me...
Pre-orders will likely open on Friday, Nov. 8th, and will close before the end of the month. A more detailed announcement is coming in early November!
Additionally, I've added several prints to my INPRNT:
Commissions
Commissions are currently closed! However, you may contact me at any time via email at [email protected] or soharsquare on Discord to add your name to the waitlist. Folks on the waitlist will get priority when commissions open up again.
Upcoming Events
November 23rd: Tabling at KDF26 (Tainan, Taiwan)
December 10th: Lecture on creating fanzines and doujinshi, hosted by the NCKU Manga Club (Tainan, Taiwan)
December 14th-15th: Tabling at FFK17 (Kaohsiung, Taiwan)
This probably isn't relevant to most people here, but I figured I'd put this out there just in case!
CHORUS
CHORUS is my current comic project! It's a 16-chapter BIRDMEN fan manga, and we've just uploaded the last pages of ACT 2. If you liked my previous comics, please consider checking it out at @birdmenfanmanga! Most of my love at this time is going into this project.
A more extended newsletter on CHORUS can be found here.
Subscribe to the Monthly Newsletter Elsewhere
In times like this when social media websites are imploding for one reason or another, I think it's nice to have multiple bases of communication. Of course, monthly newsletters will always be posted on Tumblr, but you can also join my Community Discord for these updates as well. I have also set up an email subscription list.
Thank you all for the support thus far!
Love, Soh Arsquare. Oct. 27, 2024.

Stay tuned for a Newsletter full of interesting things to gawk about! Game progress, character information, artwork, development insight... No Penumbra Phantasm, though.

'And more deadly to Frodo was this!' He stooped again and lifted up a long thin knife. There was a cold gleam in it. As Strider raised it they saw that near the end its edge was notched and the point was broken off. But even as he held it up in the growing light, they gazed in astonishment, for the blade seemed to melt, and vanished like a smoke in the air, leaving only the hilt in Strider's hand. 'Alas!' he cried. 'It was this accursed knife that gave the wound. Few now have the skill in healing to match such evil weapons. But I will do what I can.'
He sat down on the ground, and taking the dagger-hilt laid it on his knees, and he sang over it a slow song in a strange tongue. Then setting it aside, he turned to Frodo and in a soft tone spoke words the others could not catch. From the pouch at his belt he drew out the long leaves of a plant.
'These leaves,' he said, 'I have walked far to find; for this plant does not grow in the bare hills; but in the thickets away south of the Road I found it in the dark by the scent of its leaves.' He crushed a leaf in his fingers, and it gave out a sweet and pungent fragrance. 'It is fortunate that I could find it, for it is a healing plant that the Men of the West brought to Middle-earth.
👀 okay but if Aragorn was speaking elvish the narrator would have said elvish, wouldn't he?
Is Aragorn using human magic?
Also athelas isn't native to the continent???

Happy October! This year, TOA won't see the return of its annual autumn mini-event, so members who wish to make their own Halloween fun this season are more than welcome to! However, we have a more important announcement to make...
Saying Farewell to Mod Bren
Bren is one of TOA's original founders, but after four years, they have decided to step down. Their art and lettering has become iconic for TOA's events over the years and will remain immortalized in the blog's archive. They will also remain within the community as a regular member.
Now Introducing... Mod N!
N, a longterm member of the community, has agreed to step up and fill Bren's spot. He has had a couple weeks of onboarding already, so we believe that he will do phenomenally in this position. Please give him a hearty congratulations, and look forward to what we have in store for you in January!
Housekeeping:
Current Month in TOA: Harpstring Moon
In place of Midsommar, we will be re-running TOA's advice box near the end of the month.
Thank you again to everyone who submitted and voted on our anniversary mission tasks! We've added new prompts for the skill points with the most votes. Check them out here!
REMINDER: Please delete your title posts when starting new threads. Keeping them on your blog makes it harder for the mods to check your activity at the end of the month. These title posts do not need to remain on your blog in order for the thread to be valid, and you can in fact delete them from the dash as soon as you save them to your drafts.
Game Liveblogging channel: Members are now allowed to create threads for their liveblogging experiences, and we encourage you to do so if you know that you will be liveblogging a game for a while.
Mentor signups are open! Please sign up if you’re interested in helping a newcomer get acclimated to the group. Of note: it is now a requirement to be 18+ in order to apply to be a mentor.
And don't forget to take a moment to fill out this month's feedback form! Please do not submit blank forms.
