Angelology IV: End of Week Three

Hello angel enthusiasts! It's the end of week three of Angelology IV, time for our weekly recap. Here are all the pins that we have funded, now including the BG3 pins!

Our next funding goal is the Eldritch Saints recolors at $16K. Remember, if these are funded during the campaign, backers can pledge for them at the discounted price of $15 instead of the preorder price of $16-18. If we don't reach this goal, these designs will be available to unlock in the survey/preorder store based on order quantity per design.

I thought I'd share a little bit of my crowdfunding plans. If you haven't heard already, my next campaign after Angelology IV will be Pride Angels, you can read about it on its pre-launch page. I'd like to launch it during June, which is Pride Month, but that might overlap with Angelology IV so I'll see how things go!

After that I'm not too sure what, if any, pin campaign I'll run next. I have two ideas but I'm trying to decide if it's better to self-fund a small amount of pins, open preorders or a pin club, or run crowdfunding campaigns instead. Let me know your preference in the poll I published!

Anyway, my two ideas are:

Themed Monster Enamel Pins - monsters themed after different aesthetics such as Victorian Gothic, Rococo, Medieval, etc. If you saw my Cowboy and Film Noir Monsters pins, this campaign would be in the same vein as those, and those pins would be made available in new colors.

Blood and Holy Water - vampire and angel themed pins. I feel like there's shared imagery between vampires and angels and it would be neat to make pins for that. I'll be working on these during this year's Angeltober. (What is Angeltober you might be asking? It is my annual October art challenge themed after angels. You can find the previous prompts here: 2021, 2022, 2023)

king gizzard and the muppet wizard! i drew cook as a muppet in february of 2022 as a joke and then decided that hey, i should make the others as muppets wouldn’t that be fun! that was in october and just now i got around to finishing a sticker sheet of the whole band as muppets, uh eight months later

WITHIN TEMPTATION To Release 'Worlds Collide Tour: Live In Amsterdam' Live Album And DVD/Blu-Ray

Ahead of WITHIN TEMPTATION's upcoming tour, fans can prepare for the spectacle by reliving the adrenaline-pumping excitement of 2022's "Worlds Collide" run from the comfort of their homes, as the band's remarkable show at Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on November 29, 2022, will be available on vinyl, CD, Blu-ray/DVD and in a special 64-page hardcover artbook on June 21, 2024.

During the "Worlds Collide" tour, WITHIN TEMPTATION played two sold-out shows in their home country at Ziggo Dome. Last month, WITHIN TEMPTATION released the official music video for their newest single, "A Fool's Parade", featuring Ukrainian producer and vocalist Alex Yarmak. All royalties from the new single will be donated to Music Saves UA for the duration of the Russia-Ukraine war.

He was shipped out on the 27th of May, 2023 and is part of their "Dollfie Dream" series of dolls. He was designed by iXima and sculpted by Zoukei-mura and he comes with a magnetic headset, removable clothes/underwear, a removable wig, normal hands and peace sign hands. [Kaito's 24inch height is him when he isn't wearing his high-healed boots and therefore he might actually be slightly taller if he has them on.]

Preface

This year was a year where I learnt a lot about myself. As many of you know, I released my debut novel, Changeling, in March. This was a literal dream come true for me, and I spent the majority of January, February and the first half of March editing the final files, and organizing the release.

All while trying to continue writing Darkling.

And then I burnt out. Hard. I wouldn't call it a mistake, I've learnt a lot about myself and the publishing process, and what my limits are, but it took me quite a bit longer than I'd have liked to recover from that burnout, and so my stats for this year, once I take a look at this, probably aren't going to be a steady as I'd like.

And what I mean by that is there were several periods where I tried to push forward, but had to let it go and continue just recuperating.

It's only been in the tail end of 2023 I've begun writing semi-regularly again, but I digress. Let's dig into some statistics for 2023...

Projects Worked On

Darkling 77,136 words (This year! Total manuscript is almost 100k right now) - Bonus Scene; 1,109

First Quarter - January-February-March

Words: 19,428 Time Writing: 19 hours 30 minutes Time Editing: 11 hours 20 minutes

This period I was hyper-focussed on getting ARC's of Changeling out to readers, finalising formatting, particularly for the Hardcover, reviewing proof copies, setting up all the various sales channels, and most of the time I logged in January was Editing Time as I needed to review the notes left my by Editor before release.

Once the editing was finalised, I tried catching up with Darkling in between everything else and this is where I really began struggling. I'd thrown myself into my self-edits in December of 2022, and in hindsight I really needed a break but, with a deadline approaching, I just couldn't take one.

Second Quarter - April-May-June

Words: 5,224 Time Writing: 2 hours 20 minutes

April and May I wrote absolutely nothing. Not a single word. And while I never announced it publically, June was supposed to be the original release date for Darkling.

Which meant I had to cancel my editor slot, and re-evaluate where I stood on what I could reasonably accomplish. This is really where I began to recognise how hard I'd pushed myself into a burnout.

After writing nothing for two months, June was where I tried to do a complete reset, and start from scratch building up my daily wordcount and, well. I just wasn't ready yet. I managed 2 days in June, on the 3rd and 4th, and then crashed back into writing nothing.

Third Quarter - July-August-September

Words: 1,346 Time Writing: 1 hour 20 minutes

After crashing in my reset attempt in June, I knew I had to just ride the burnout to it's end. Pushing was only going to make it last longer. I also knew I had a long-awaited holiday set in September. It was my first holiday in about 15 years, so I decided to not set any goals for this quarter. If the mood to write struck me, I'd go with it, but otherwise I was concentrating on reading, on preparing for my holiday, and on outlining other ideas, worldbuilding, and anything to do with my books that wasn't actually putting new words down on the page.

One of those things was figuring out a bonus scene to give away for Darkling Preorders, and I did try working on that a little in August. That's where most of my words for this quarter landed, but most of my time was spent outlining.

And the thing is, the holiday actually really helped. Where I went on holiday happened to be a very similar landscape/enviroment to one of the location in Darkling, and I found around the middle of the holiday I was handwriting in a notebook. I'd not done that in a long time.

Fourth Quarter - October-November-December

October Words: 2,439 Time Writing: 2 hours 45 minutes

November Words: 51,841 Time Writing: 43 hours 45 minutes

December Words: 2,273 Time Writing: 1hour 40 minutes

I came back from my holiday re-energised and knew I wanted to dive straight back into Darkling while still riding that high. I spent some time writing in October, before I hit a few snags and realised I needed to get a birds eye view on the plot.

So I stepped back from writing again to rehash my outline. I now have a timeline of events stuck to the large cupboard in my living room, but it set me up for success in November's Nanowrimo.

My original goal for Nano was 75k, which would have completed the Darkling Manuscript, but November Nano's are always hard, and I've only just pulled myself out of a 6-month burnout, so I had no intention of pushing myself too hard. I did win Nano, but with 51k and change.

Which left me just December to finish the final 20-25k. I'm always a little slower in December. A reaction to a fast Nanowrimo/November, combined with family and holiday seasonal stuff pulling at my time, so I didn't get as much done as I'd have liked, before Christmas prep took up all my free time. I did still managed a few thousand words though, so I was happy enough with that considering how the rest of 2023 had gone.

Goals for 2024

I try and keep my goals vague and loose, because I know I can't always commit to things, especially long term, but in general I'm just going to try and make self care a priority this year, while still making progress and moving forward with my writing.

I’ve been meaning to write up a shareable post for some time now regarding the fiasco with Layla Szczepaniec and her company JpopDolls. I’ve been putting it off for months now because the whole situation just makes me so unbelievably angry that it is hard to calmly and succinctly explain all the bullshit Layla has put not only myself through, but also dozens of other customers and doll artists through.

I’m writing up this post because I do not want anyone else to be in the same position as I am now where they’re out of luck getting back their money and have nothing to show for it other than a few Facebook messages and emails full of nothing but excuses and lies. If this post prevents even one person from doing business with JpopDolls, I’ll consider that a win. If it causes Layla to shut down the business for good, I certainly wouldn’t shed any tears over it.

The short of it is that I preordered an Asella Raspberry doll in coffee skin back in October 2020. I never received the doll nor have I received a refund. Layla has not posted to the JpopDolls Facebook page (the only active source of information) since June 2022. Comments are also limited on the FB page (or at least I know that I am personally blocked from making comments on it). I am not the only one in this position either. There are people that preordered dolls from early 2020 that never received them, and there’s people that purchased in stock goods that either never received them, or it took months to receive them.

The long story is that back in February of 2022, Asella herself posted on her Facebook page that she had recently been in contact with Fdoll and Island Doll (2 companies that JpopDolls had used in the past for casting Asella’s dolls) since she was planning to run some preorders herself, and found out that neither of them had received orders from JpopDolls in the last 1-2 years, despite the fact that Layla had been regularly running preorders since 2020. Prior to this news, I’d spent a little over a year emailing and messaging Layla asking for when dolls would be arriving, and always given something along the lines of “soon���, and once given an actual month for when the dolls should get delivered to her.

When contacted about this news, Layla stated that Asella was misinformed and that the dolls were delayed due to the 2020 COVID shutdown and casting problems. She then stated that the dolls would be delivered by spring, and if they weren’t, customers would be refunded. Spring came and went and no dolls materialized and no refunds were sent.

In summer of 2022, a public Facebook group was created called People and Businesses who lost money to JPOP dolls. It currently has 79 members. It was a group that aimed to try and organize all of the JpopDolls customers that had been having issues with the company. Together, dozens of us filed formal complaints to the Washington state Attorney General’s Consumer Resource Center, as well as the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Unfortunately, nothing came of these complaints. I believe some individuals also filed police reports and knew of at least one person that was thinking of trying to go to small claims court since they lived in the same state as Layla. I haven’t heard any updates regarding that though.

From what I read in the group, JpopDolls has been ripping off artists that worked with them for years, at least since 2017 (when Grace was still alive, so this isn’t a new problem with a new owner). This has led those artists to stop working with them in the past. A post from October 2022 also stated that they received an email from JpopDolls about a sale on doll clothing and accessories as well as in-stock dolls, so Layla is clearly still actively trying to do business and the website is still up and running. I have not personally heard anything from her since emailing her in March.

I have personally come to accept that I will not be getting my money back, and even if I did receive the doll by some act of God, I wouldn’t want it anyway. The entire situation soured me on a doll that was my grail for a majority of my time involved with this hobby. At this point all I want is to make sure that nobody else does business with JpopDolls (or Layla Szczepaniec) ever again.

Do not buy anything that’s in stock or on preorder. Do not give your hard-earned money to someone that is more than happy to take it and then never send you what you paid for. If you have an order with JpopDolls that is still within the timeframe your bank or PayPal give to file a claim, get your money back now.

Please do share this information with your fellow doll collectors, new and old alike. I don’t want anyone else put through this nonsense.

Bandai Namco US Lists Kingdom Hearts Tamagotchi on Amazon, is an Announcement Imminent?

We didn’t se this one coming! Bandai Namo US has updated the Tamagotchi Store on Amazon to include both the Dark Mode and Light Mode shells of the Kingdom Hearts Tamagotchi. The Kingdom Hearts Tamagotchi just recently launched in Japan back in October of 2022 after being officially announced in late March of 2022. Either shell is available for preorder, and both are unavailable, with no pricing listed.

Bandai Namco US did recently bring the Kingdom Hearts Tamagotchi to the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con. Could an announcement from Bandai Namco US be imminent? Will the Kingdom Hearts Tamagotchi be part of the spring lineup for Tamagotchi? We shall soon find out!

sorry it took me so long to get to this!!! but here, have a long-ass look back at 2022:

1. first things first, did you have a good year?

abso-fucking-lutely. i still can’t believe all the good things that happened this year. i did what i did last year for this meme and went through my google photos to bring you the highlights:

first things first, i finally got to leave my shit-ass job (and, more importantly, my shit-ass boss) for a job that actually pays me what i’m fucking worth, can i get a hell yeah.

the jujutsu kaisen 0 movie came out in the u.s. and it was really good and they added in nanami’s black flash record just for meeeee even though it wasn’t in the manga. 🥰

with my new income i have been able to get more serious about collecting figures (nendoroids in particular!), which is an interest/impulse of mine i haven’t really been able to indulge basically since i was collecting pokemon cards as a little kid. i have always had a collector’s heart (like my father before me, who was collecting baseball cards while he was enabling my pokemon card addiction and who this year got into collecting hot wheels to scratch that same itch), but i have always had to really hold it down and exercise a lot of restraint for financial reasons, and it has genuinely been really nice and fun to have the kind of disposable income that has allowed me to really go for it, to the point where my tiktok is now pretty solely devoted to nendoroid unboxings and i have a fucking google spreadsheet where i keep track of my figure collection, the status of my preorders, my wishlists etc.

for the first time since the start of the pandemic i got to hang out with two of my dearest friends (MULTIPLE times each)!!!

i fucking watched naruto??? after my college bestie spent ten human years trying to get me to???? it was good i would die for rock lee?????

finally got my hair looking the way i actually wanted after several attempts, lol.

my sisters and my college bestie came into town to see bastille, because of course it wouldn’t have been the best year ever if it hadn’t included a bastille concert. :)

i finished an october writing challenge for i am pretty sure the first time ever??? and i did it all for one fandom, which i’ve never done. and i feel really good about it!!!

i turned 30!!!

I ADOPTED A CAT, SOMETHING I HAVE WANTED TO DO LITERALLY MY ENTIRE LIFE, AND I LOVE HIM MORE THAN ANYTHING IN THE WHOLE WORLD

got caught up on the chainsaw man manga right before the show dropped, and both are EXTREMELY good.

in addition to my turning 30 in october my mom turned 60 in december, and as our birthday present to each other we went on a trip to nyc in november and went to see moulin rouge on broadway, and it was absolutely fantastic.

it hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows, obviously; i think because everything else has been so good i’ve spent the year mentally and emotionally having a bit of a sexuality/romantic crisis. which, like, obviously it’s good that most of my life is going well enough that i have the bandwidth to start really digging into stuff like this, but i haven’t really hit upon any like closure or epiphany yet, and honestly stumbling back into fandom via jujutsu kaisen hasn’t helped this at all. i’ve felt worse about being ace this past year than i have since the “discourse” of 2016-2017, and genuinely i wish i could just, like, turn it off, lol. my therapist actually had to tell me a couple sessions ago that being ace isn’t a bad thing, because of the way i was talking about it/trying to find some kind of loophole where maybe i’m not ace, actually. in addition, my obgyn’s office has been giving me the runaround in a major way this year resulting in a lot of issues with my birth control which has affected me hormonally, so that’s been kind of a background thing, as well. but even with all that, this has definitely been one of the best years i’ve had in a long, long time.

10. what song sums up this year for you?

at the risk of making light of my last answer, “i love it when hot guys cry” by link lauren, lol.

11. what album came out and has been on heavy rotation since then?

probably the closest to qualifying for this title is give me the future, but idk if i’d say it’s been on heavy rotation. i’ve been listening to a lot of old music lately, unfortunately.

38. what was the best moment of the year for you?

bringing home yuji!!!!!!!

50. what do you wish for yourself?

i think what i want this year is to just continue detangling my sexuality/romantic orientation and its impact on my self-worth, and to find ways to engage with fandom that don’t make me feel like shit, lol. just really get my mental health under control so i can really enjoy all the good stuff i’ve got going on in my life while i’ve got it.
