Meet the dazzling Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris ocellata). This bird is a flashier relative to the typical Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) often associated with Thanksgiving. It sports a lustrous coat of colorful feathers and a blue head dotted with vivid orange bumps. The word “ocellated” in its common name refers to the eye-like markings on this turkey’s tail, which are similar to those found on a peacock’s plumes.

While the Ocellated Turkey is closely related to its North American cousin, don’t expect them to sound the same. This spectacular bird's gobble begins with a series of low frequency thumps—similar to the sound of a starting engine!

"The Ocellated Turkey is the gaudier tropical cousin of the world's only other turkey species, our familiar Thanksgiving bird. Unlike its northern relative, the Ocellated Turkey does not have a broad range. It's only found on the Yucatán Peninsula, which embraces a few Mexican states, the northern half of Belize, and Guatemala's northern Petén region. Despite its size and eye-popping plumage, this bird lurks mostly unseen amid thick foliage."

Ocellata Subspecies Info Added

When the group ‘turkey’ is mentioned most Animalians' thoughts go directly to Gallopavo as they can be found all over the world in plentiful numbers. However there is another subspecies that subscribes to this group called the Ocellata. The Ocellata tend to be quite secretive despite their brilliantly striking colors. Rumor has it that many of them are born in the city of Yucatan but no one Ocellata has ever laid eyes on this city. Oh do I wish I could visit the city, even if just for a moment or two as its said that its a unified utopia….perhaps they may make an exception for a researcher like me?

Note: Although I do not think I will ever be able to realistically be allowed to see Yucatan, I do think there is a good chance that I would be allowed into the Ocellata school where they teach those that venture into the rest of the world how to live. They need teachers there that have lived in the world after all.

Ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata)

The ocellated turkey is a species of turkey residing primarily in the Yucatán Peninsula. It is a relatively large bird, at around 70–122 cm long.The body feathers of both sexes are a mixture of bronze and green iridescent color. Turkeys spend most of the time on the ground and often prefer to run to escape danger through the day rather than fly, though they can fly swiftly and powerfully for short distances as the majority of birds in this order do in necessity. Roosting is usually high in trees away from night-hunting predators such as jaguars and usually in a family group. The Ocellated Turkey is a generalist in terms of its feeding habits. They are known to feed on a wide variety of forage including but not limited to insects such as beetles, moths, and leafcutter ants, grass seeds, nuts, and leaves.
