joel/athena/javier - lovers to enemies to lovers poly au. -

(joel is 48 in this, athena is around 26 and javier 37 soooo.....age difference there in the relationship)

this little au idea was meant to be one I had thought of for joel and athena originally but adding javier into the mix felt really fun to me! basically, this would be set within the TLOU universe where the poly trio is present. in the beginning of the outbreak, athena was with both joel and javier at the time and the three of them would carry on and just survive together, sticking with one another for a loooooong while.

however, that would all change after a fallout between athena and the guys and soon she and them had parted ways, athena finding herself forming a little group with rowan, rosaline and kiran (yes they're in this as well). meanwhile, joel and javier would carry on without her though they hadn't moved on from her, their love for her was still there however, they did feel a sense of disappointment when she left, she was theirs and theirs alone yet, she just left. soon, they'd find themselves in jackson where joel's brother, tommy, and his wife, maria, were located. both joel and javier would fit in just fine within the community of jackson, even gaining themselves a friend in dev burman and settling in there for some time, a couple years at least......until she came back.

it would be just five years later that athena and her little group would find themselves in jackson as well where it just happened to be joel and javier were as well. everyone would be very welcoming with her and the rest of the group, no hard feeling between them and the rest of jackson. when joel and javier find out the woman they love most has returned, they don't hesitate to be sure it was actually her and it was! because of that, she'd soon become their biggest headache because they looked at her as enemy now but, she was still their woman and that was a tricky barrier to have.

with athena, she was at a loss for her words the first time she heard joel and javier were also located in jackson as well. she had told rosaline, kiran and rowan a bit about them but never would've guessed she'd cross paths with them AGAIN. they were enemies of hers now, though, she could see that in their eyes but, she could also see just how possessive they'd become with her over time. how they were with her in private when no one else was around to see them.

however, when they were possessive, they were gentle about it. they didn't hold any dark actions against her, no, why would they? they still had loved her all those years later, had still cared. still, to the community of jackson, she was still their "greatest headache", an annoyance that everyone else didn't mind having around but, in private? she was still their lover, their partner. she was and has always been theirs.

(again, this just a silly little idea I had and I thought I'd share with the rest of y'all because why not! also, i apologize if you find any errors in this because this was quick and so it might be a bit messy lol)

being the youngest son of the conglomerate im industries , rowan believes he had dodged a bullet. being the youngest meant lesser responsibilities , freer choices , and a wider array of possibilities — and for the most part of his childhood , though he still was subjected to intense private lessons , he'd never felt the pressure weigh on his shoulders as opposed to how it hampered on his older sister's.

rowan never took his life seriously. lessons begrudgingly attended in the mornings , sports in the afternoon , sneaking off in between doing god knows what , parties at night , and never coming back home until a week later to repeat the process. he was a nuisance as a teen , even more so as a young adult as he began to show signs of not growing out of his teenage mischief. his parents had thought that if they had just allowed rowan to do whatever he wanted at the beginning , he'd grow tired of it and become considerate , but they thought wrong.

after high school , rowan got into yale for sports science. though it was never in his agenda to go to college , his father stroke him a deal of consenting him to study any degree he wanted just as long as he finishes it , and of course , with a few calls to his esteemed yale colleagues were made. his grades weren't the best , but he's a talented swimmer. and for a few months , everyone swore he'd finally stick with it , that is until he suddenly dropped out , went backpacking around the world doing god knows what - a running theme - and called it taking a gap year ... or two.

he had cut all means of communication with his family for almost two years. although his mother became a consistent bearer of news during that time , it was also how he knew his sister had gotten seriously ill , and that coming home was of grave matter.

rowan's relationship with his father was strained , and with his sister's inability to continue working in the company , frustratingly agreeable had only become rowan's response to his father's demands.

Killjoy: the Pack's resident veterinarian/medic/animal wrangler. was a parahunter until a jetpack crash left him severely injured and his squad kinda abandoned him. bitter and cynical, usually hides away in his (heavily fortified) shack.

Transceiver: the first successful Enclave psyker experiment; heavily mutated; his powers basically act as a psychic beacon he can't turn off. leader of the capital wasteland super mutants.

Rowan McMahan (she/her): Raised by vampires, one of her dads was a former vampire hunter who taught her how to fight. She has a sixth sense that allows her to sniff out danger and powered individuals. She's the leader of the group, and is the most insistent on being a super hero.

Bernard Beatrix "BB" (he/him): BB has no magical inclination, in fact, magic seems to bounce right off of him! Using this, he was able to kill the vampire king... which in turn, made him "King of all Vampires", despite being fully human.

Pinky Manor (she/they): Daughter of an evil wizard CEO, made of demonic magic. She was a total daddy's girl... until she became a rebellious teenager when her dad didn't approve of her punk lifestyle and wimpy boyfriend. Totally cut off, now she's working at starbucks.

Alec Miller (he/him): Son of a chemist and a botanist, his parents did not approve of Alec's inclination for cryptozoology... and most importantly: ALIENS!!! THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE! He's very anxious and scared of them though.

Keaton Kareem "Kat" (he/she): Kat's a speedster. Fun loving, easy going, and adventurous. He's very insistent on being the comedy relief and not taking anything seriously. That's all there is to say on the matter.

TLOU Spidey AU: A Rundown.

So, I recently made a mini post about wanting to start a Spidey AU of sorts for TLOU/my OC, Athena Kallis, who essentially becomes a spidey/spider-woman variant. In this post, I'll be doing just that: sharing my thoughts and idea on the spidey au I have in mind for my OC as well as her relationship with Joel Miller and how it's effected in this AU. Let's begin, shall we?

For starters, let me introduce Athena Kallis and her lore in this specific AU:

Athena Kallis was born on November 1st, near a settlement in Auckland, New Zealand. That settlement was known as Piha. Growing up, she'd love exploring the beachside and creating her most memorable memories there as a way of distracting herself from the mournful loss of her parents.

Her parents died of a tragic accident while she was young and at the young of 9, she would find herself moving in with her uncle. Where? San Marcos, Texas. However, she moved within the inlands of that area which arises some conflict with who she is and where she's from.

Later on in life, after graduating high school, Athena took the road to college, moving away from Texas and finding herself in Seattle, Washington where'd she study up on her education and use her degree to become a wildlife biologist at the age of 25. Her Uncle Ari had soon moved into Seattle as well, hoping to be near her whenever he'd like. He also found a job working for a nearby homeless shelter, one in which Athena would volunteer at from time to time.

Getting back to Athena, though, being a wildlife biologist was great! She got to provide expertise on conserving the biological diversity of national forests and grasslands while working to protect and recover endangered species. One particular species she worked on a lot was that of a spider: the katipō. The young woman grew fascinated with how it worked and what it's species was like. The spider, itself, also became crucial to Athena's life after the incident.

One night, while getting so caught up in her work and studying up on the spider, she hadn't realized that she got bit by the venomous spider she was studying. For a time (more like a few hours), nothing abnormal seemed to have happened after getting bit....that was until things started changing. Soon after, Athena found out just how much she had changed due to the bite. Things were sticking to her glue, she had a strong grip on objects and....she could shoot out webs AND climb up walls. She was living, human spider in a way. There came a time where she took advantage of these spider powers, it happened during robbery near the homeless shelter her uncle worked at. At first, Athena didn't know if she could help out or not but luckily she did as she managed to stop a criminal from going around the city and robbing other places. HOWEVER, that also came with the scar she now bares under her eye, a scar that she got while chasing down the criminal as he struck her with a knife. Athena figured that, if she can stop a criminal like the one before that, she'd be able to stop many others. It's what the city needed: A hero.

So, she became just that, a hero that Seattle needed. She managed to make a suit for herself, one in which the colors were reminiscent of her favorite bird: the wrybill, that meant her colors were white, black and gray. With the suit, she could keep her identity hidden while still being able to save citizens from criminals and turning them in. There was a cop, Dev Burman, who had become curious of why this spiderling was roaming the streets, why they were suddenly coming in to take out bad guys. He still keeps an eye out on the spiderling, hoping to one day get to know her a bit better even if he already knows about the girl behind the mask.

The people of Seattle loved this spiderling and Athena loved seeing how much she was loved, even if some had doubts about her. Her Uncle Ari was quite fascinated over a person in suit taking the streets to fight off bad guys, he just hoped that whoever was under there was staying safe. Speaking of Uncle Ari, he's important as he's the one who unintentionally gets his niece into a budding romance with his best friend, Joel Miller, without even knowing it.

The Beginning/Relationship of Joel and Athena:

Joel Miller was close friends with Uncle Ari for a while, a bit after Athena left for college. Sometimes, Uncle Ari would mention him to her on the phone, was yapping about what the two discussed that day and everything like that. Athena never knew what he looked like but did have curious mind as to what he looked like.

Joel Miller was around Ari's age, having met him a bit after Athena left for college. From then on, him and Ari have been the greatest of friends. Sometimes, whenever Athena was mentioned, Joel was reminded of his sweet baby girl: Sarah. Sarah was Joel's daughter, his everything however, she was gone from him to quickly after a tragedy happened, he'll never forget what was taken from him, how someone he loved so much can just vanish like that.

While Athena never knew what Joel looked like, it was quite the opposite for Joel as he knew what Athena looked liked. Ari would show baby pictures of his niece to Joel from time to time and had even showed a recent picture of her attending some local event with friends Athena had sent to Ari. It was a polaroid picture of her and, while Joel would never say it out loud, he thought Athena was very pretty in his eyes. It seemed as though she could light up his whole world if ever got the chance to meet her.

and she did.

When Joel came up to visit with Ari, he'd told he'd like to stay for a few months, see what it's like away from Texas. Ari was thrilled about this visit, excited to see his best friend after months and even more thrilled that he'd be able to properly introduce his niece to Joel.

Both and Athena and Joel had met when Athena came in to help volunteer at one of the many cookouts the shelter threw every few months. Athena's mind immediately sensed that a handsome, older man was standing in front of her as soon as Ari called him out. Joel's brain was no good either, here Athena was, standing right in front of him. She was real!

The two introduced themselves, making small talk that day but both would eventually hit it off. Time went on and soon, Joel and Athena were gaining strong feelings for one another, feelings that would be admitted. They just couldn't help themselves around each other, it was a spark that matched between them. So, they do eventually get together and things are better than ever for the pair.

For a time, Joel doesn't know about Athena's identity as "The Katipō", and Athena keeps it that way for a while. In fact, the only person who knew at the time was Rowan Bauer, her best friend (and has a thing for Dev) and he's done a (almost) pretty good job at keeping it secret. She doesn't want Joel to freak out over his girl practically risking herself to save the city. Eventually, though, it's revealed to him that Athena is the web slinger he keep seeing on the news and tv. Things are a bit complicated for a while but, in the end, Joel realizes that all he wants is for Athena to be okay out there. That she comes home, still in tact, still carrying her love for Joel. That's exactly what she does because both she and Joel couldn't live without one another, they deserved one another and belonged together.

Bonus fun facts:

Joel has a calico cat named franklin.

Athena has a tattoo in honor of her heritage/culture and where she comes from.

Athena also has a blind salamander named Palo (though, sometimes he's referred to as "Matty" also 😉)

Oh lovely Zabala, about the OCs, is there any drama brewing between them and how long did it take the others to figure out Carter could see weird stuff?

Most beautiful ask I’ve ever gotten. I’m about to rant.

Drama is brewing. Endless amounts since they’re sophomores in a small town. Mini introduction with them:

Carter Rosales. He sees ghosts, demons, supernatural creatures that wanna tear his soul apart and he’s unfortunately used to it as a 15 year old boy. Generally sarcastic, nervous and quick to assume the worst. Town knows him as the crazy guy since he’d talk to himself (ghosts) and in elementary school, would rave on about the things he was seeing that teachers and counselors would get concerned, calling his parents.

So obviously in a small town, everyone kinda stayed clear of him. He has beef with like half the people in the drawing for example-

Gabrielle Thompson. Popular because everyone knows her since she’s the schools top journalist but unpopular because her label is “the nosiest girl in school”. Secretly, she just really wants a friend since the people she surrounds herself with don’t really like her because she’s “desperate”. She also has ADHD because I said so. In freshman year, she talked with Carter and they actually had a good time. He told her about his troubles as the schools freak. In her dense 14 year old brain, she wanted to try and fix his reputation by writing in the schools paper and trying to defend him. Made things worse and now he just avoids her. She still tries.

Then there’s this bitch (sorry bro)

Jack Miller! Does three sports, popular and is generally a rude guy. Mostly because he’s not very socially adept but still. He hangs around kids that make fun of Carter and while he doesn’t partake in it, he’s still pretty condescending to him because he thinks he’s weird. He says that to his face. Multiple times Later, they get to be friends but for now, they both hate each other.

He’s actually super awkward behind the golden exterior. Most likely has ADD. He also hates Rowan who we’ll get to in a moment.

The rest are more neutral with Carter

Lian Xiāo. Kid who’s just trying to find themself by picking up thousands of hobbies they’ll abandon in a week. Tries to stay out of drama. Carter is the warmest to them the most because they had a group project together in middle school and Lian was the nicest to him. They both have orchestra together as well so Lian is the closest thing to an ally Carter has in the beginning of the story. They also are apart of the journaling club like Gabrielle but takes the photos.

Last one! Rowan Demski! A new kid which is a shock in this town and was the talk of the school the whole freshman year. Now she’s just chillin. Rather temperamental, especially to Jack. They both hate each other violently. How did it happen? Who knows. They forgot but they can’t stop now. She doesn’t talk to Carter much but they were in the same home ec class in freshman year and since she loves cooking, she helped him hold a knife. Also super tall. Girlie is 6 ft.

As for the “how long did it take the others to find out he can see weird stuff?” question, kinda depends. In my brain, it takes until sophomore year that they take him seriously due to a fun lil incident called a near death experience ❤️❤️ everyone at school knew he “thought he saw creatures” but they didn’t believe him cause y’know. They’re the first people to actually take him seriously.

Trauma bonding is insane.
