1- Merrill: “Oh look, sweety! It snows! How weird! It never snows here. Have you ever seen snow before? How lovely, isn't it? Wait... by the Dread Wolf!”

Kat’s magic shows up when she is 6, right one year before she moves from Kirkwall to Redcliff, after her mother’s death. She cannot stand for the hot, humid climate of Free Marches.   One day, as she was helping gather some herbs near Sundermount, Merrill saw her making it snow right over their heads.

2- “NO. NO. NO. I wont name her caty, kitty or whatever just because she is pretty and soft, Anders!”

Her name comes from her father’s love for cats. Fortunately, Hawke can achieve a sort of compromise...

3- Kat: “what if I become a mage, Uncle? Will you still be my uncle?”

Carver: “...um...Andraste was a mage... a good one... I mean, she used magic very little, probably... and she always used it for the good of others... so of course I will... but maybe you’d best avoid telling anyone what I’ve said about Andraste, right hun?”

Her affection and respect for Templars come from her love for her Uncle Carver from whom she inherits her first aknowlegments about the Chant of Light. As he disappeared likely in consequence of Lyrium madness (but no one can be really sure about that), Kat puts all her efforts as a healer to help those who wish to overcome their addiction or health issues that derive from years of Lyrium intake. Even though she knows it is quite impossible, she never stops hoping to see her uncle again.

4- Anders gives his daughter to Aveline and Donnic after Hawke's death. Kat grows up surrounded by Templars, as Donnic was one of them. She has to learn how to keep her magic under control to avoid being discovered. So Donnic teaches her the “Child’s prayer”, a nursery rhyme taught to the youngest of Templars recruits meant for their first practices on how to Focus. Donnic did not expect for this to work...

5- As a child, Kat has a huge crush on King Alistair: he often improvises for his daughter Lexy and Kat little shows with his puppets and tells wonderful, funny stories about the Hero of Ferelden.

6- Kat spends most of her Childhood with Connor (Donnic and Aveline’s son who she considers her brother) and Lexy.

The three of them Always manage to flee from the castle to help at Master Dennett's farm where Eilynn (Dennett's wife) created a sort of shelter for orphans. After the Inquisition events, Redcliff was overrun with children who had lost their families. This orphanage prevented children from being recruited by templars before time.

During these breakouts, Connor, Lexy and Kat get often into any sort of mischief.

7- “ One day, you shall accept your nature. Nobody can escape what one is.”

Kat is Always hunted by her past, her origins, her father’s choices. While she’s learnt how to cope with strangers’ provocations, she really cannot stand when they come from Morrigan who she considers a sort of mirror in which she often recognises herself.

8- “I do not endorse my father’s choices: innocent people died because of him. But I will never deny my affection for him, nor say that he was mad: this Chantry MUST change. You know this, Cassandra, better then I do.” The Chantry askes Kat to publically reject her father as a traitor made insane by his particular kind of possession. The only thing that prevents Kat from arrest or Tranquillity is Cassandra’s protection.

OC Kiss Week: Good Morning Kiss

(This is for DA2 Aber AU because I’m weak. @ghostwise‘s Renata Hawke is too beautiful and good.) Usually, Aberdeen stayed out too late to properly sleep ‘at home’. She’d come in, sagging from her late nights running across Kirkwall, and curl up on a chair in the library until someone took it upon themselves to move her elsewhere--usually Renata would handle it when she got up for coffee in the mornings. “You can just come to bed when you get home, you know.” she hummed, gathering the sleepy elf into her arms. “I don’t mind if you wake me up a little so-long as you don’t stick any cold hands or feet to me. Get enough of that from Anders...” “I usually stink of templar blood.” Aberdeen reasoned, snuggling against the other woman’s chest. “Have to air out some.” Renata shrugged, doing her best not to jostle Aberdeen as she went up the stairs. “I’ve smelled worse. Remember the dragon fight? I couldn’t get the drake spit out of my coat for weeks.” Aber laughed quietly, eyes lulling back closed already. “You get some sleep, yeah?” Renata tutted, settling her into bed and fluffing at the pillows. “I’ll bring Merrill along if we need any blood magic today.” Aberdeen waved her off lazily. “I only need a few hours, tops.” she drawled, “So wake me up if you need someone to bleed a templar for you.” Renata laughed and leaned down, pressing a kiss to her lips lightly. “Goodnight.” she hummed, squishing the other mage’s cheeks together. “Good morning.” Aberdeen replied, wrinkling her nose at her. “Right?” Renata laughed and straightened up, pulling the covers over Aberdeen before turning for the door. “Oh,” she said, “Whatever works for you. I can make you pancakes whatever time of day you wake up.” Aberdeen, curled up comfortably in silk and furs, just chuckled after her. “You’re too good to me.” she said. Renata paused, door half closed, and tossed her a grin, “Just returning the favor.” before leaving her favorite templar hunter to get a proper rest.

How long does it take for them to officially get together? Did any of the other Lighthouse members have any suspicions beforehand?

For Renata and Merrill, it took them a couple of years! They were fast friends very soon after meeting one another. They were both adjusting to completely new circumstances and relying one another through it. Both were also coping with a lot of anxiety and grief over their respective losses during the Blight. I personally headcanon that as soon as Merrill was out of Clan Sabrae, she felt a tremendous relief to no longer have Marethari's expectations set upon her. The expectation to be a perfect First, to give all of herself in an attempt to approximate Hirael Mahariel (nobody could, not even Marethari and certainly not Merrill!). The first thing she set upon was gathering her resources and strength to continue working on the eluvian. The second thing was getting out there into the Kirkwall lesbian scene!! because she never had time while studying for First!! So she dates Athenril for a little while. Very, very casually. Cue Renata going Oh that's!! That's neat! Congratulations!!

Of the group, I think Isabela figures it out first. Not just because of their very close friendship, but because they are clearly oblivious to their mutual attraction. Someone please help them.

Lirio and Lace are mutually interested pretty much right away, but there is so much going on at the time that their flirtations don't materialize into anything more than an affectionate friendship. There is a lot of respect and appreciation that develops between the two, and they work well together. However, in the interest of accomplishing their mission, it seems best to put romantic pursuits on hold… for the time being. Varric knows pretty much right away, of course. And it's not like Lace and Lirio are shy about it, they're just… busy! Then, of course, Solas' ritual happens.

So… a little over a year, between meeting and becoming romantic.

What is their favorite thing to do together? Do they share any hobbies? Does your Rook teach their partner their own hobbies? Does the partner teach Rook theirs?

Renata is a writer and she spends a lot of time indulging in fiction and poetry. Merrill is a reader but her interest is more geared towards non-fiction texts, on topics varying from magical theory to daily kitchen recipes. Still, they can happily spend an afternoon around a stack of books! Merrill's eluvian research is a huge driving passion for her, it eats up a lot of her free time. However, she keeps Renata at arm's length from it, knowing it to be dangerous. Meanwhile, once Renata and Varric open their publishing office, she spends a lot of time in her print shop working. Merrill finds it a little drab. I can't say they share many hobbies!

Lirio and Lace share an appreciation for nature and exploration, and that is definitely their main commonality (one early moment where Lace is falling for him involves her reading some of his writing about a landscape he once witnessed). Importantly, they are interested in and supportive of each other's hobbies. Lirio loves listening to Lace talk about what gory book she's reading, and enjoys watching her practice her archery, especially in battle (hot). She enjoys seeing him in his element, swimming or manning a ship, practicing with his daggers (hot).

What does their ideal date look like? Do they go on much?

Renata and Merrill would happily enjoy an evening staying-in. Cooking a delicious meal, dancing, and lounging in bed for hours without a care. (No need to go outside, it's too Kirkwall-y out there). This usually happens in Merrill's little apartment, which Renata always prefers to spend time in, even after moving to Hightown. It's a place of true solace, an escape.

17. what were they like as a child?

Hamal was a 'difficult' child. He was moody and often acted out, be it tantrums or outright defiance... late to speak, slow to warm up to people, those early years he could be found getting into trouble and hanging out with Tamlen, who was the only one who could coax him to do anything. Indeed, he could go days without saying a word to anyone but Tamlen.

Renata was a model child, very much an elder sibling. She was dutiful and obedient with just the right amount of childhood mischief. She was also brave and daring, which made for the best kinds of adventures. She amassed a group of friends wherever she went, which was problematic once her magic began to manifest. Then the family tended to pack up and move regularly and she lost a lot of those connections.

Neluayo was quick to grow up. She was a gifted artisan from a young age and spent a long time honing her woodworking skills, perhaps at the expense of enjoying other facets of her childhood. But she was busy, and dedicated, and she took on a lot of responsibility among her clan. She also married young, bonding with her first sweetheart when the vallaslin were still very fresh on their cheeks; and she was widowed young, during the Blight.

21. what is their biggest regret?

Hamal's biggest regret is not going back to look for Tamlen. Because regardless of what Duncan said, as far as Hamal describes it, he knew Tamlen was alive. He could feel him out there. Their bond was never severed until he killed him as a ghoul. And he knows Tamlen would've gone back for him.

Renata's biggest regret is not noticing what was happening with Anders. Where they had once been so close, he became distant enough that she was blindsided by what he did. Maybe she could have helped, maybe she could have spared him having to make that decision... or at least, seen it coming.

Neluayo doesn't have regrets. She makes the best decisions available to her at the time and grits her teeth to whatever consequences may come. I think she has the kindest outlook of anyone; she isn't hard on herself about any of it, though she recognizes where she would've changed things, if she could...

17. What is your Rook’s favorite thing about their partner? What is the partner’s favorite thing about Rook?

Zevran's favorite thing about Hamal is how often he surprises him, and continues to surprise him. He doesn't get bored with him! His genuine personality, his unique outlook, his actions… Hamal lacks the pretense other people favor, and in that way he grounds Zevran and beckons pieces of him that are likewise genuine, expressive, free. Meanwhile, Hamal's favorite thing about Zevran is how hopeful and resilient he is, even if he doesn't quite see it himself. He doesn't quit; he keeps striving and moving forward even after everything he's been through, and so, to Hamal, he becomes someone who always has a solution, an idea, a word of comfort or encouragement. He admires his strength and character.

Merrill's favorite thing about Renata is how steadfast she is. In her view, there is something incredibly noble in how Renata continues to be graceful and charming and kind, even when shit's hitting the fan. Even when she's angry or lost. She's dealt with things so elegantly, it inspires Merrill just by being near her. Makes her feel safe. Calm in the storm. Renata's favorite thing about Merrill is how self-assured she is. Merrill is true to her ideas and convictions, and no one can deter her from them; simply because she is confident in her understanding of things, certain in her own abilities and skills, in her truth. Renata isn't sure she can point to a scrap of truth in the world, save for Merrill. That's incredible.

Lace's favorite thing about Lirio is how empathetic he is, how thoughtful in his actions and words; he is really aware of the world around him, and he loves it in an unrestrained manner, unabashedly, he loves it. Even when it reviles him. Stars and moons and waves in the sea, and the trees and the people in the cities. It contextualizes a lot of her own experiences. Lirio's favorite thing about Lace is how dedicated she is to her goals and ideals, finds it inspiring how she can be decisive, just chart a course and follow it; she holds the map. There's a ruthlessness to her, but it's hidden in a gentle expression, and she'll wield both as needed. Glory be to god for dappled things etc.

17. a description of your OC’s family by a future historian

The Amells were a powerful family in late-Blessed Age Kirkwall, though in the following century they became much reduced in influence following a string of scandal, misfortune, and an unfortunate lineage of magic. A notable exception to the relative obscurity that befell the line was Renata Hawke, grandchild of Lord Aristide Amell.

Renata Hawke—so named for Divine Renata I—gained influence and wealth by defending the city from Qunari forces in 9:34 Dragon. At this time she was named Champion of the city, despite claims that she possessed magic herself. She was known as a prolific author and a philanthropist. Despite all this, her life was touched by tragedy. Her siblings were both casualties of the Fifth Blight, which struck while the Hawke-Amells were residing in Ferelden. Her mother was killed in mysterious circumstances.

Renata Hawke herself never married, and disappears from the history books following the Kirkwall Rebellion, where her efforts to stem the conflict failed. The city has not had a Champion since.

(In scribbled graphite along the margins: They’re still not happy that the only woman named Champion of Kirkwall for the past 200 years was an apostate mage with a Dalish wife. Never mind the fact that her involvement with the Inquisition was well-documented! They’d rather act like she up and fell out of the face of the earth. How typical!)

could i slide in and ask hermit and wheel of fortune for RENATA?

Of course! 👀

The Hermit: When Hawke is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them?

It somewhat depends, but she’s never really had an issue with solitude! She likes to keep busy; back in Ferelden, there was always something to do around the farm, and in Kirkwall, she could pick up extra work from Athendril. If left to her own devices, she could read, write, explore the city… she’s always engaging with something. Idle hands, you know, lol. And she’s a big daydreamer!

But in Hightown, the mansion always feels too big and empty. She hates being alone in that place. Rather than be alone, she’ll usually go spend time at the Hanged Man or at the print shop she and Varric run. By the time things fall apart, she’s spending more time at Merrill’s than in the mansion. It’s just too lonely there.

The Wheel of Fortune: Describe an interesting character moment for your Hawke. What made this moment stand out to you?

The Bone Pit is an interesting questline for her… I’ve always been intrigued by her motivations, and how Hawke will always be in some way embroiled with these complex social dynamics in Kirkwall. Class dynamics and worker rights, refugee protections, everything going on with the mages… so if in Act 1, she already winds up owning a share of a local mining enterprise? That’s fascinating. “For the workers,” she says!

And of course, by Act 3 she is running a printing business with Varric, which puts her and co. right in the center of Kirkwall’s politics. She has employees! She has a say in how these people’s lives go! She makes important decisions that impact the entire community! But she does not make them alone.

That’s entirely up my alley in terms of the type of protagonist I like to write.
