03: Mari Kobayashi (23) USC Trojans Backliner

Mari is one of the seniors of the Trojans, one her teammates really look up to because of her calm demeanor and laser focus. She is so unbothered. She is absolutely confident in herself, her strength, her skills and her team. She is sooo strong *swoons* She's quite tall despite her Japanese heritage, and combined with the absolute wall of muscle that she is, she makes for an excellent match for Jean's raw power. He appreciates the way she plays rough but fair, always. How she does not back down ever, has learned to toe the line and use the rules to her advantage, so that nobody ever dares step on her toes.

She does not know anxiety, shyness or false modesty. Things are, or they are not, and you either face them, or you don't. The team can count on one single hand the times she was shaken by something or someone. She's in the top most mature Trojans.

I would say she is perhaps very close to being on the autism spectrum, in the way that Ushijima Wakatoshi (haikyuu my beloved) is: very focused on her goals and going Pro, winning the Championships one more time before graduating, unbothered to make nice or adhere to people's expectations, content in her minimal social life, she can appear cold and distant, but really that's the way she is. Gruff without trying or meaning to, she is a big awkward teddy bear that will tell you when you are wrong, where you failed, and where you need to improve, not because she thinks she's better than you, but because she cares for her team and because she expects the same criticism for you, as a sign of sportsmanship and camaraderie. She does look very scary, like Asahi (haikyuu my beloved), when you don't know her. The lack of emotion (and sometimes presence, even) looks menacing if you think it means anything. But really, that's just her resting face. It's not her fault. Her stature doesn't help, sure, but trust me, she's a marshmallow at heart and off the court.

Mari is absolutely whipped for her girlfriend. Said gf is on the USC Trojans cheerleading squad, and they've been going steady for like... ever. Kind of like Dan and Matt. They've both got their wedding planned, without ever having talked about it. It's just an evidence, and a formality, at this point. Despite being absolutely confident in her relationship as well, Mari's gf is probably the only one who can get her flustered for the smallest thing. She completely melts under her praise, and she likes being the little spoon from time to time despite being so much bigger than her petite lover.

My inspiration for Mari? Nonaka Miho (pictured above), professional climber from Japan. 100%. Saw her performance during the last summer Olympics and immediately knew I had to make her mine.

And so that's all about Mari for now! She is more of a background character, there for her power and wisdom, and for the gay. Someone needs to be stable and healthy on that team!

The day was unusually warm, the kind that called for a cold drink and a moment of respite under the shade. Ren Nakashima, known to the world as "Vox," found himself at a local park, guitar in hand, casually strumming tunes that blended seamlessly with the laughter of children and the distant bark of dogs. It was his birthday, and for once, he was not Vox the musician, but Ren the man, enjoying a day without the weight of fame on his shoulders.

As he played, a familiar figure approached. A courier, with a package tucked underarm and a clipboard in hand. Ren signed for the package, a puzzled look crossing his face. It wasn't often that deliveries found him here, in the open air where music felt most free.

The package was an elegant box, and the musician opened it to see what was inside. As he did, his eyes grew wide:

Inside lay a star, but not just any star. It was... a Hollywood Walk of Fame star with "VOX" etched boldly at the top. It was more than a gift; it was a symbol, an acknowledgment from those who knew the man behind the music. Accompanying the star were notes, each a birthday wish from the members of '86', the band that had shared stages and spotlights with him:

"Happy Birthday, 'Pretty Boy'. You like your gift? Congrats! Your famous, even on the fucking seas now! You better be grateful!"

Ren couldn’t help but laugh in disbelief, lighting grazing his hand over the star, yep, it was real alright, there was no mistaking it. He couldn’t fucking believe it, his name on a Hollywood Star, the ultimate symbol of how far he had come from being some pretty face who would play his guitar at various cafes and bars to now a rockstar legend in his own right, the one thing he wanted more than anything as a kid was now in his hands, quite literally and yet it still didn’t feel real.

He immediately thought about his dad, the man who had the ability to take anything into his hands and turned it into gold, days spent with him and various other people in the studio watching art being made and the two of them nodding their heads and singing along to a hot new song his dad’s client had put out, such a simple time, before his mom took a knife to his throat. He was his inspiration, the reason why he pursued music in the first place and his motivation for when he got turned down again and again and again.

It’s not easy trying to get your music career off the ground while raising two kids and Ren was not ashamed to admit that he had his fair share of breakdowns, what artist didn’t? It came with the experience but he kept going, every time he thought about giving up, he swore he could hear his father telling to “Keep marching on, superstar.” so he kept climbing because he could not fail, he would not fail, it wasn’t just about him, Ayano and Ryōhei, his siblings, the only family he had left, they didn’t deserve to struggle and fight to survive, they’ve already been through so much, Ren had promised them that he’ll give them the life they deserved after he buried his parents.

All of that pain, all of that suffering, all the screaming, crying, pleading those people did, grating on his ears and nerves shut up shUT UP, the constant struggle and hard work, it all payed off now the moment his eyes landed on this star. Of course, he was extremely grateful for the people he met along the way that helped him, Kai Quinlan for taking a chance on him and helped him refined his style, Meari Miracle, Kaoru Yamashiro, and 86 for showing him the ropes and boosting his popularity with all the collaborations they’ve done together, his dear manager who he loves to call “Uncle”, despite his gruff and rough exterior, Ren truly saw him as a father figure and was thankful for keeping him grounded whenever “Vox” got a little too into his ego, and of course, he could never forget his own band, Osiris, chaotic as they were, he couldn’t ask for a better band to share the spoils of rewards fame gifted them with (he snickered at the message Iris left, he and the rest of the band will never let their dear drummer let it down).

He decided to cut his time at the park short and packed up his guitar and his star and started to head home for a quick pit stop, he knows for sure that Max and Kaiji (well, mainly Kaiji, he’ll have to explain what a Hollywood Star is and what it means to Max) will lose their shit once he tells them about this and really, he couldn’t have make it as far without them too so this was just as much their victory as it is his.

Jay and Leia were laying down in bed, covers over them both. It was still unbelievable to both of them that they just graduated college. Now they both just needed to get jobs, since there’s no way they can support their children financially with the amount of the money they have.

“Wahhhhh!” Jay and Leia woke up right then when hearing their babies cry. Leia rubbed her eyes while Jay kissed her head. “Again?” The two got up, putting on their clothes right before heading to the babies’ room.

“I was reassuring myself.” Jay replied. Leia chuckled and kissed his hair. They both cooed their babies and sighed. “They stopped crying.” Leia whispered. Jay chuckled and kissed her cheek. They put their children back in their cribs right before heading back to bed.

Shoshi, thank you so much for trusting me again with Jo. She is, as always, a joy and a delight. For those of you who don't know her, Jo Brandt is Shoshi's War Correspondent OC who has made several appearances in the TDS multiverse and appears here by kind permission from her author.

It was easier writing at the Aero Club.

There was always the extra work of bringing her typewriter with her from her room, but the portable was built for outings like this, and, too, there was something…comforting, about writing her column from the middle of things, or at least, as close to the middle of things as Jo was able to get at Thorpe Abbotts without being a security risk. Everyone came to the Red Cross club at some time or another, and the constant stream of chatter in the background made a nice change of pace from the birdsong and quiet tree rustles of the back garden.

And there was the bottomless coffee, of course. And the cat.

"Well hi there, mister, how are you?" Jo asked, as Spark Plug came up to rub against her chair and buff his head against her leg a couple of times. The black and white cat purred for a moment and then took the opportunity to jump up onto the table, narrowly missing Jo's empty coffee cup, and scratched himself against the side of the portable's carriage return a few times. "You're lucky you're cute," Jo said quietly, waiting for the animal to move out of the way before she started typing again. "Usually I charge for spelling errors."

"Excuse me, Miss, is this cat bothering you?"

Jo didn't need to look up at Fred to see that the woman was smiling at her own joke, coffee pot at the ready as she did her rounds of the room. "Yeah, as a matter of fact," she said, sitting back in her chair and holding tightly on to her empty cup before Fred could try filling it. "He was just yowling at me about when I'm going to do that piece about his owner."

The Clubmobile woman deflated a little. "Jo, I'm not -"

"But you are," Jo said, cutting into Fred's excuses about 'not being very newsworthy,' still guarding her cup so Fred wouldn't fill it and run. "You're the one everyone wants to read about! When all those mothers read about their sons they're sitting at home hoping someone's taking care of them -- and that's you."

Fred's smile could best be described as 'flat'. "Interview Mary - or Tatty! They've got much better stories than mine."

"Freda Torvaldsen, from Madison, Wisconsin, is very used to managing rambunctious attitudes," Jo said in a fake newsman's staccato. "Twenty-six years old, she put her career as a kindergarten teacher on hold to go overseas and entertain America's flyboys. From slinging doughnuts to singing tunes, there's nothing Fred, as she's known around base, can't do - and that includes rehabilitating stray animals." She paused for effect.

"You're making me sound like Snow White."

"I'll bet if I asked nicely I could find you seven guys to be dwarves," Jo shot back without missing a beat.

She was serious, and Fred knew it. "Please don't."

"And anyway, she's a brunette," Jo added, for effect. "Thirty minutes. And a picture. With the cat."

"No one wants -"

"Everyone will want a picture with the cat," Jo cut in strongly. "Especially after I tell them where he came from."

Fred got into enough arguments on a daily basis that she could tell when she had lost one, and she sighed (somewhat dramatically) and sat down just as the door opened and a fresh group of flyers rolled in. Most of them gravitated towards the counter and Mary Boyle, but one of them broke away to stand behind Fred's chair as if to look over her shoulder at Jo's typewriter.

"What's this? Fred Torvaldsen is sitting down? On a Tuesday?"

"I'm being interviewed," Fred said, looking up at the pilot with a fondness in her eyes that was hard to hide. Jo bit back a smile and allowed the pair their moment - Clubmobile girls weren't supposed to have favorites, but John Brady was one of Fred's. (If he had his way, he'd be more than a favorite, if Jo was any judge, but she supposed there would be time for that later. Hopefully.)

"Is our trusted correspondent going to write about how we'd all fall apart if you weren't here?" Brady asked, with absolute seriousness.

"I am, Captain Brady, thank you so much for suggesting that," Jo said strongly, before Fred could get a word in edgewise, grinning at him.

"You both are being very mean," Fred said with another one of her exasperated smiles.

"We are," Brady confirmed with a sly smile that did nothing to hide his delight. His hands never left the back of her chair, but there was something in his eyes, too, that was doing a lot of very heavy lifting for his favorite who wasn't supposed to be a favorite.

"There a party here I don't know about?" John Egan's voice came booming from behind Jo. When had he come in?

"I'm being interviewed," Fred cut in, before anyone could say anything else. "Jo's going to add me to her Rogue's Gallery for the Clarion."

"Excellent. Best news we've had all day. You'll make us all look good, Fred. Are you putting in a good word for her, Spark Plug? Are you?" The cat, which had formerly been relaxing next to the typewriter, had stood up as Egan approached, yowling softly for attention and closing his eyes to lean into Egan's large, warm hand and its energetic scritches, the cat's expression perhaps best described as 'pleased'.

Jo looked away to see Fred was watching her with an odd look in her eye and a secretive smile. "What?"

"Oh, nothing," Fred said mildly, sitting back in her chair. "Are we starting this interview now, or what?"

Meet The New Mods

Thank you very much for the warm welcome! To begin we’d like to say a very big thank you to mods Pan and Claire, as well as Jo, Marie and Kat, for their hard work in creating and continuing the event for six years — especially with how big the community has become! We have a momentous job ahead of us when it comes to modding the community and running the event as well as they did, but we are determined and up for the challenge.

I’ve participated in Whumptober for a few years, although I never finished. I’m a writer who can’t write fluff to save my life; if a character isn’t going through some kind of trauma in canon I’ll make it happen in fanfic. I live with an old blind mini poodle and intense imposter syndrome. I used to mod communities on Livejournal (fandom OLD) and I’m really excited to be a part of the new mod team. Hello everyone! Those in the Whumptober discord may know me as being a mod there since last year, but if not, then hi! I have been a completionist for Whumptober every year since 2019, and it’s safe to say that the event quickly became one of my favourite times of year. I’ve been a fan of whump since well before I knew what it was, so it’s been amazing to find a community filled with so many like-minded, wonderful people creating such fantastic (and evil ;)) works. Hiya! I’ve mainly lurked in the whump community for a while, across several different blogs. I was a Whumptober completionist in 2021 on an old blog, but I haven’t completed it since! I mainly write OC whump, with more focus on emotional suffering compared to the physical elements. Outside of whump, I volunteer and run a wildlife rehabilitation unit, work in retail and keep the ADHD goblin in my head happy by cycling through an endless list of other hobbies like graphic design, wildlife photography and traveling for gigs. I’m really looking forward to helping put together Whumptober this year and being a part of it!
