Ten Facts About Ulannium Kaarz
I wasnât actually tagged to do one of these for Ulannium, but I started putting this together as a sort of case-study for him, and it seemed to make sense to do this. Tagging the following people just in case they want to do this for one of their own OCs: @raven-of-domain-kwaad @anchanted-one @actualanxiousswampwitch @grandninjamasterren @sullustangin @cyraniadebergerac @starrypawz @intheinkpot @voidendron @lanabenikosdoormat @dragons-bones @clifford-telegenic @cryo-lily

Fact One â Parentage and Early Childhood: Ulannium Kaarz was born on Coruscant, the son of Ishris Kaarz, his mother, a brilliant research scientist with a Republic pharmaceutical conglomerate, and Luncib Kaarz, his father, a marketing executive and lobbyist with the same company. Both of his parents were very affectionate, Ishits especially. Although she worked long hours, his mother always made time for her son at bedtime, first by singing him Mirialan lullabies, and later by reading to him, fictional stories at first but later more advanced texts such as scientific manuals. Years later, Ulannium would credit his motherâs efforts (and her genetics) with the development of his impressive intellect. By chance, Ulanniumâs Force sensitivity was not discovered until he was already six years old. (Possibly a result of his motherâs interference in the screening process.) By then, he was already academically precocious in the extreme, devouring books far beyond his age-level. When he was selected by the Jedi and told he might one day gain access to the full wealth of the Jedi Archives, Ulannium was thrilled at the opportunity. Indeed, if he had an ambition at this point, it would have been to spend the rest of his life in the galaxyâs greatest library. Ulannium had a younger sister, Tharia, who was possibly even more curious about the universe than he. As she was four at the time, he regarded her as a pest who kept stealing his scientific holopads. When the Jedi tested her for Force-sensitivity, it came back negative, much to the relief of her parents who were already giving up a son.

Art by @theoasiswinds
Fact Two â Inspirations: One of my inspirations for the character of Ulannium is George Smiley from John le CarrĂŠâs Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. When he does finally confront someone, whether an enemy or even an ally whom heâs trying to persuade, he brings the full force of his intellect to bare on them, and people often find it as overpowering as a force of nature. Ulannium is remarkably proficient at understanding and analyzing most of the people he encounters, including some who others find enigmatic. (Such is the case with Corellan Halcyon. Ulannium understands the Hero of Tython far better than someone like Satele Shan, at least earlier in the story.) On the flip side, a select few people are something of a mystery to Ulannium, and throw him off entirely. (This was the case with Zenith.) Another character who inspired me was Vaegon Targaryen, a minor character from George R.R. Martinâs A Song of Ice and Fire. He could have done a hundred things, including becoming the King. He preferred his books, however. Â
Fact Three â Growing up on Uphrades: To avoid potential contact with his family on Coruscant, the Jedi sent Ulannium to their small enclave on the agricultural world of Uphrades. It was a small training cadre; two semi-retired Jedi Masters and eight younglings. To discourage unhealthy attachments amongst the younglings, they were arranged on a tiered-age system. The oldest of the younglings would be around fourteen and would be considered on the precipice of their initiate trials to become Padawans. The next-oldest would be a year or two younger than the eldest, and so on down the line until the youngest child, who would be around four or five. With the age difference, it was hoped that the younglings would be less likely to adopt detrimental attachments to each other.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6ee22e38b9f88bf2ff4917af1ef37940/81c076c968af7133-7f/s540x810/bf2c684c14c15a6a237e4655a83c6105fd3544a7.jpg)
Fact Four â First Friendship: Two years after Ulannium arrived on Uphrades, the next youngling was sent. The younger child seemed untalented and almost Force-blind to Ulannium, who by then was already demonstrating an impressive sensitivity to the Force. But as the Masters were unwilling to give up on him yet, when he turned six, he was handed a training saber. Within a week, he had surpassed every other youngling in combat, even those twice his age. Within a year, no two initiates could match him. Even Master Sagottoh, once a Blademaster of the Order in his younger years, soon found himself pressed. This youngling - one age tier below Ulannium - was named Corellan Halcyon. When they first met, Ulannium himself thought the youngling was untalented and barely worth his notice. Later, when his martial capability manifested, Nowan Ko Detizu realized that Corellan needed Ulanniumâs help to acclimate to the other children, most of whom were intimidated by the young firebrand. The bond the two developed would last them the rest of their lives. In recognition of this reality and her responsibilities, when Ulannium was ready to become a padawan, Nowan Koâs report to the council would advise them not to assign the two to work together, which is why they were kept separated for the next eight years. Although they were both disappointed, both would ultimately conclude it had been the right thing to do.
Fact Five â Tragedy: When the Sack of Coruscant took place, Ulannium was still far away on Uphrades, reading a text on archaeology. He recalls feeling a deep sense of foreboding in the pit of his stomach, but as he was unable to determine what it was, he soon resumed reading. A few days later once the reports had come in, the Uphrades Masters regretfully informed him that his family had been killed during the attack when falling debris had collapsed on them on the street. The youngling showed little reaction at first, then finally announced his intention to head off to find solitude to meditate. The masters, decided that he needed time to process what had happened, let him. Corellan, recognizing that he needed friendship, pursued him and talked. [I may write about that encounter someday.]

Fact Six â Personality: One of Ulanniumâs personality quirks is his tendency to answer a question with a question. This is sometimes a defensive mechanism, and sometimes simply a way to get an individual to rethink their position diplomatically. In the normal flow of conversation, he does this skillfully enough that people rarely even notice. He picked up this particular quirk from Master Nowan Ko Detizu, one of his mentors back on Uphrades. The Cathar Jedi taught him a multitude of simple techniques that aid him in his day-to-day life as a Jedi, diplomat and sometime political and military leader.
Fact Seven â Traits: By the time the class stories begin, Ulannium is already an expert in the fields of biology, archaeology, geology and history, and could probably have earned a masterâs degree in any of those areas if given the time and inclination to do so. Although he was appropriately honored to meet the esteemed members of the Jedi Council, he was most excited to meet Gnost-Dural, as the Kel Dor had, by then, been named the Keeper of the Jedi Archives. Ulannium definitely has a strong interest â some might even say a passion â for ancient Force knowledge and would live in the Jedi Archives if he could. One of the most difficult decisions he ever faced was rescuing Laria Taphoni on Taris, effectively sacrificing the holocron the expedition team had found. In making his choice, Ulannium was guided by the principles of the Jedi code and recognizes that it was the correct decision, but nevertheless he had to meditate for a long while to process everything that happened. Although he recognizes that Rajivariâs teachings ran contrary to the Jedi code and had corrupted many ancient Jedi, Ulannium never quite forgot what he had learned of it. He wishes he had spent more time with the fallen Je'daii Master to learn where things had gone wrong.

Fact Eight â His Relationship with Nadia Grell: Ulannium doesnât believe in concepts like âlove at first sightâ. But when he met Nadia, he generally became more protective of her innocence. Eventually, those feelings evolved into romantic impulses, but even in their early days together, he was somewhat distracted. That was one of the reasons he didnât immediately pick up on Nadiaâs force-sensitivity, which he would have normally understood right from the get-go. As a side note, his relationship with Nadia develops very differently in my story than in the game and does not progress until after she is Knighted almost three years after becoming his Padawan. As a fluffy note, To date, Nadia is the only person who has ever called him âUliâ. Sheâs usually discreet about the practice, but she did actually let it slip in front of Felix Iresso on one occasion. Ulannium was embarrassed, Nadia was aghast, and Felix was amused.
Fact Nine â Joining the Alliance: After Ulannium and the rest of the Ossus colony rejoined the rest of the galaxy (lining up with the Jedi Under Siege expansion from the canon story), he and Nadia became honorary members of the Eternal Alliance, with Ulannium serving as the Allianceâs liaison with the Council. The Council - when it eventually reformed - did not formally condone or condemn this relationship; they simply pretended that they didnât know it existed, despite it becoming common knowledge by that point. [Note: This mirrors Revanâs post-KOTOR relationship with Bastilla in the âRevanâ novel.] Far from being past his prime after joining the Eternal Alliance, Ulannium achieved some of the most impressive efforts of his career as the Allianceâs top diplomatic negotiator, writing much of the treaty that Corellan and the Alliance would eventually sign with the Galactic Republic. But arguably the most impressive feat of his career was the negotiation of the Treaty of Alderaan, a pact that ended nearly twenty years of civil war and internal discord. Leading the Allianceâs diplomatic corps, one of Ulanniumâs top deputies would be the Killik Joiner and former Imperial diplomat and Intelligence operative, Vector Hyllus. Ulannium learned a great deal of respect for Hyllus and his capabilities, which was reciprocated by the Joiner.
Fact Ten - His Legacy: Some years joining the Alliance, he and Nadia had their first child: Maykia Ishris Kaarz. She is named for both of her grandmothers; Maykia on Nadiaâs side and Ishris on Ulanniumâs. Sheâs a couple of years younger than Bela and Tasiele, who are friends of hers who Iâve spoken about elsewhere. Her childhood was complicated to say the least, but she eventually fully joined the Jedi order on her own terms as she began adulthood. She wields a double-bladed lightsaber as her mother did, albeit sheâs not a true Jedi Shadow. [Note: Maykia is part of the âFuture Halcyon Legacyâ Iâve been putting together. ]

Thousands of years later, Teela Kaarz, one of Ulanniumâs descendants, would be conscripted to work on the construction of the Death Star. Teela and a group of Rebel recruits fled the doomed space station before it exploded. [Novel: Death Star ]

I'm captivated by Corellan's personality in your narrative. Could you share more about his defining traits? For me, your JK comes across as a dedicated, humble and compassionate person who shows strong protective instincts, bravery and resilience in the face of adversity. I greatly admire his commitment to seeking peaceful solutions. But I'm curious, how would you describe his overall personality and his approach to his bond with Kira while remaining true to his and the Jedi Order's ideals?
Thanks for this ask, @rajakaen !

Corellan was raised in a rather isolated Jedi enclave on Uphrades. It was two semi-retired Jedi Masters, Sagottoh Panaka and Nowan Ko Detizu, with eight younglings, the eldest of whom was 14, the youngest of whom was five. Because of that isolation, his perspective on certain things was very skewed.
You speak of his humility, and yes, its true to an extent. But he genuinely thought he was going to get to Tython, and there's be fifty other padawans just like him.
So he was a little confused by a lot of stuff he experienced on Tython, but Master Sagottoh instilled in him a full-steam ahead mentality, so he pushed through. It was only after chapter one of the Jedi Knight story that he actually caught his breath enough to understand a few things.
Kira⌠was a surprise to him. He had no context whatsoever for his feelings towards her.
When she kissed him, it brought clarity.
Did he feel conflicted? Sure. But his biggest concern during that time was that if they were discovered, that Kira would be expelled. She'd worked very hard to become a Jedi Knight, and he didn't want to ruin things for her.
But he can't run away from it. If he tried, he'd probably crack, the way Malgus did after he killed Eleena.
It got easier after they joined the Alliance, of course.
Thanks for the ask!

The Only Ones Who Can
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/67af556b9acd1530d5357beb11b4b8f9/2957d801dcf1061c-16/s540x810/c6b420302d9c598f831a0e2435c491efcce95d68.jpg)
Authorâs Notes: With thanks to the lovely and amazing @chaosandwonderâ , for sending me the prompt âfifty reasons to touch someoneâ 30. ... as comfort (Sorry this took so long! I canât draw like you, but I can offer you this for your kindness. Sorry that Iâm a slow writer!) Sheâs graciously granted me permission to use her OC in this piece. This story take place during the Battle of Corellia during the Class stories.
Corellan Halcyon splashed cold water on his face from the basin of the refresher, allowing the cool sensation to refresh him.
He had seen combat on dozens of worlds, but never on this scale before. Tens of thousands of Republic and Imperial soldiers were fighting all over Coronet City, most often in brutal block-by-block fighting. He couldnât begin to calculate the total casualties of it all, much less the long-term impact of leaving so many citizens homeless. Heâd once heard from Rusk â whoâd been fighting wars since before Corellan was born â that urban fighting was the bloodiest imaginable and he now saw the truth of it. Choosing to fight such a battle in a city was madness, and yet he was being forced to do exactly that.
Corellan knew all this bloodshed was only furthering the Emperorâs plans. Whatever massive loss of life was required for his ritual the Battle of Corellia was certainly feeding into that. Somewhere out there, Tol Braga was orchestrating all of this under the Emperorâs control. Corellan was determined to prevent the Emperorâs dark work from coming to pass. The schemes heâd already stopped on Belsavis and Voss had, at their core, been precision attacks hidden amidst the backdrop of larger military operations, designed with the intent of triggering a chain reaction of apocalyptic events. A metaphorical hypodermic needle of poison to the heart. Â
By comparison, Corellia, with its brutal all-out warfare, was been like a mallet to the head.
Corellanâs forces, both his own crew and those Jedi who Master Satele had placed under his command, had served magnificently thus far, prevailing against vast numbers of Imperials and Sith. Most of the Jedi reinforcements heâd been sent had been inexperienced when theyâd arrived on Corellia, âraw recruitsâ as Rusk had called them. Now, however, they were fighting like hardened combat veterans. They had already helped liberate most of planetâs famed industrial base, turning that military production in the Republicâs favor. Now they were gradually closing in on the government district.
Slowly, almost imperceptibly, Corellan and his people were winning. The Republic was pushing the Empire back. Â Â
Now standing in the refresher of a makeshift Republic command center in Axial Park, he had just a few minutes to collect himself before the next mission. Heâd sent Lord Scourge â who had little interest in saving lives on Corellia except as a necessity to foil the Emperorâs plans â to conduct reconnaissance and attacks of opportunity behind enemy lines. (He was remarkably proficient at it, and no Imperial soldier or officer was likely to challenge the Sith Lordâs presence. Even if rumors of a Sith Lord going rogue did emerge, it would only sow dissent among the Empireâs forces.) Doc was treating wounded soldiers and civilians in a nearby med-center. Teeseven was helping to get the Republicâs local communications systems online so they could coordinate larger operations from here. Kira â at Corellanâs insistence and over her very verbal protests â was recuperating back on their ship, having not slept in two days of fighting. He knew he would need her fresh and ready when the final confrontation came.
So it was that Sergeant Rusk would be joining him for his push against the Emperorâs Imperial Guard at Axial Park. It was a task the Chagrian was well suited for, given his long history of combat.
As he dried his face with a disposable towel, Corellan looked up at himself in the mirror. He found he barely recognized the Jedi looking back at him. He was freshly shaved, but his eyes looked sunken, his face thin. This was what war did to people.
Tython feels like a lifetime ago. He thought to himself.
But he had learned by now that putting on a brave face for those under his command was part of whatever it was that he contributed to the Jedi Order and to the Galactic Republic. So he rolled his shoulders, straightened his armor and robes, ran a comb from a Republic field kit through his hair, and prepared to return to the action.
His crew needed him. The Jedi task force needed him. Corellia â the planet from which his parents apparently came from â needed him. The galaxy itself needed him. (Or so Master Satele had said. Corellan had his doubts, but this was unquestionably his mission.) He took reassurance in the fact that he was needed. That Corellan Halcyon had a place in the galaxy where he belonged.
Corellan couldnât explain it; he wouldnât have even admitted it out loud to anyone besides Kira, but somehow, he knew they were going to succeed. It felt arrogant to even think such a thing, given the immense loss of life and after everything that had happened up until now. But for the first time since escaping the Emperorâs Fortress, the Jedi Knight was starting to envision a final victory. Â
He was clinging to that confidence right now. At this moment, after days of almost constant fighting and weeks of missions all over the galaxy, that belief was keeping him on his feet.
I can do this. Corellan told himself.
Now refreshed if not rested, he stepped out of the refresher, prepared to head back to the gathering site to meet Rusk and the Jedi strike teams. They would need to be given their assignments. They would need to hear a few words from their (somewhat reluctant) field commander. They would need to be led.
It was then that he felt a nearby tremor nearby through the Force, his consciousness reached out on reflex as he felt a knot of pain and fatigue, coming from the passageway behind the refreshers. Corellan ducked his head around the corner to see if he could find the source of the disturbance. Â
Seated in a fetal position on a pair of crash seats was a human female with arms wrapped around her legs and her head â crowned by her intricately braided long dark brown hair â buried in her knees. Clearly, she appeared deeply troubled. Corellan was surprised to see that she wore the long robes of a Jedi master as his brow furrowed in concern.
âForgive me.â He kept his voice low, but clear as he intruded on her privacy. âCan I assist you, Master?â
Startled, the Jedi looked up at him. He noted she seemed young to hold the rank of master, appearing to be no more than a year or two older than he was, if that. Her eyes â a lovely shade of amber â were bloodshot with exhaustion while her bronze skin looked almost ashen. He saw no tears in her eyes, but sheâd clearly been holding in a wellspring of emotion. As her eyes focused on him, she blinked in recognition.
âI know you.â She brushed a stray hair from her eyes. âYouâre the Hero of Tython, arenât you? Master Satele put you in charge of Orderâs main task force on Corellia.â
He waved a dismissive hand at her use of that honorarium. Other Jedi might call him that; he was simply who he was.
âJust call me Corellan.â He cautiously leaned closer. âCan I⌠forgive me Master, but you look like youâre in distress?â
Suddenly self-conscious, the Jedi Master remembered herself. She lowered her feet to the floor and stood up, straightening her robes. Â
âIâm Master Hiraya Manawari.â She gave him a weak smile. âYou can call me Hiraya.â
Corellanâs eyebrows raised in recognition.
âItâs an honor to meet you, Hiraya.â He bowed, his arm crossing across his chest. âIâve heard of your exploits. Youâve achieved some remarkable things for the order and the Republic. Iâm glad to finally meet you.â He paused, recalling the details heâd heard of her current assignment. âI was told you were also leading a mixed task force. An alliance you formed coming from several worlds.â
âI was.â She stammered. âI mean⌠I am. But Iâve just received some troubling news.â Hiraya sighed. âI donât know if Iâm fit to be commanding anyone, right now.â
By his own reckoning, Corellan had very little experience counseling others, particularly not those in a position of leadership in his own Order. He briefly considered sending for some other Jedi more suitable to this task.
Thereâs no one left to call on. He quickly realized. Bela Kiwiiks was busy on the other side of the city helping the displaced refugees. Jun Seros and Corin Tok had both been killed in the fighting days ago, before Corellan had even arrived. The masters of the Green Jedi were either dead or otherwise occupied, desperately trying to save their schismatic order. The other Jedi heâd encountered seemed to be even less experienced than Corellan himself. Â Â
He wasnât conceited enough to believe that the Force had drawn him to her. But he seemed to be the only one here, now.
I must try. He swallowed.
âWill you tell me whatâs happened?â
Hiraya chewed her lip in consideration, before evidently deciding to confide in him.
âMy mentor in the Order⌠has fallen to the dark side.â She finally answered, letting out an exhale that conveyed a wave of bottled-up emotions. âHeâs commanding a contingent of Sith forces here on Corellia.â
Corellan absorbed that, finding himself unsuprised. Jedi falling to the dark side was certainly nothing new to him, but privately heâd hoped he would have been informed by the Council about this development given his overall mission on Corellia.
If Iâm forced to divert my attention towards another target, it could take daysâŚ
He stopped, embarrassed at himself. Heâd processed her words as a military commander and strategist, not as an active listener. Not as someone trying to help her.
Iâm already failing at this.
She continued, apparently unaware of his discourtesy.
âThe council has ordered me to⌠to neutralize him.â Hiraya emphasized the word, as she sniffed, clearly aware of the implications of such a command. She cast her eyes downward. âI donât know if I can bring myself to stand against him.â
He understood that he needed to say something now, even if he wasnât very good at this.
âTell me about your mentor?â he inquired.
âWell, his name is MasterâŚâ she started to answer.
But Corellan had immediately realized heâd erred again, asking the wrong question. He was thinking like someone trying to solve her problem for her, not helping her to work through it. The name and deeds of Hirayaâs mentor werenât the important part of this conversation, as they werenât the root cause of her turmoil.
âForgive me.â He interrupted, raising a forestalling hand. âI meant to ask who your mentor was to you?â
Hiraya seemed taken aback for a second, but quickly recovered. Corellan could almost feel her powerful intellect turn inward on her own thoughts and feelings.
Itâs good to talk about our problems with someone. Master Orgus had said to him once. Only now was he finally applying that lesson.
âWell, to me, he was like the village elders in my tribe.â she began. He could see Hirayaâs features start to soften at the wistful memory. âHe welcomed me to Tython and was both like a father and mentor. Despite the fact I joined the Order later than most padawans, he made sure I didn't feel differently. It was through his guidance that I overcame my struggles and to become a rightful Jedi."
As she finished, Hiraya let out a long breath, and he could feel her relief at just sharing her troubles with someone. Corellan simply listened quietly, letting her get it out of her system. He couldnât help but think of his own mentors, the Jedi Masters who had taught him. Nowan Ko, who had taught him to respect all life. Sagottoh, who had put a training sabre in his hand and reminded him that it did not give life; it brought death, and so it should only be used responsibly in the service of life. Orgus, who had completed his training, recognizing that while he could guide Corellan, but that his choices would be his own.
Where would I be now if not for them?
âHe sounds wonderful.â He offered, in reflection. Â
Hiraya rewarded him with a flash of a bright smile as her eye glazed over at the wistful memory.
âHe is. He really is.â she sighed. Her expression soon fell again. âBut now itâs as if heâs died, and rather than becoming one with the Force as he should have, heâs left this dark and twisted shell of himself behind. And I need to stop him. Here, on Corellia. If I canât find some way to redeem him, to save the person who he was, then I have to kill him.â
She looked away sadly.
âI donât know if I can bring myself to do that.â
Corellan felt an upswell of sympathy at her plight. He couldnât imagine being asked to face Orgus Din under such circumstances. Or â Force help him â Sagottoh Panaka or Nowan Ko. Â Â
âThatâs a terrible burden to carry.â He offered, feeling helpless as he chewed his lip. âI know thereâs nothing that I can say that will make this any better. But for whatever its worth, they wouldnât have entrusted this task to you if you couldnât handle the responsibility. That you are the best Jedi for this mission.â Â
Hiraya nodded silently in thanks. He hoped she didnât mind hearing something she probably already knew.
âDo you think I can save him?â she whispered. âBring him back to the light?â
Corellan chewed on that and perhaps inevitably considered his own predicament with Tol Braga. Heâd not known the Jedi Master for long, but in just a few months heâd come to see the Kel Dor as another valued mentor, and one of the most dedicated Jedi Masters heâd ever met. But Corellan knew what the Emperor had twisted him into. And now, Braga was attempting to bring about the annihilation of Corellia, granting the Emperor enough power for his ritual to end the Galaxy. It was as evil and destructive a goal as Corellan could imagine.  Â
Tol Braga had to be stopped. No matter what the cost.
So, he now suspected, did Hirayaâs fallen mentor.
âI donât know.â Corellan finally found his resolve. âBut itâs good to have hope. Nothing else is possible without it.â
He pressed on, even knowing what a toll this campaign had been for her and what lay ahead.
âAnd⌠I think that when the time comes, youâll do everything that could be done. That whatever happens, youâll do the best you can and thatâs the most anyone could ask for. Youâve accomplished great things for the galaxy, and you know your former mentor better than anyone else they could have sent. If you canât help him, then no one else could have.â
âYou have more worth and value to the order and the galaxy besides being a fighter or a military commander. Youâre a diplomat, a healer, a scholar and already a teacher to others. Jedi like you are the future of our order.â
He gave Hiraya the most reassuring look he could muster.
âYour mentor clearly saw that in you, and whatever has happened since then, theyâve obviously helped cultivate those qualities. And that person will always be a part of you. Your actions and your choices are your own, but the person your mentor was lives on in everything you do. Whatever the future holds, you are his legacy. Your deeds and achievements honor him.â
Hiraya closed her eyes.
âI understand.â Her voice was fatigued, but a grim acceptance had taken hold.
âGood.â Corellan scratched the back of his head sheepishly. He felt acutely out of his depth, advising a Jedi Master on a personal crisis. âWell, thatâs the most philosophical Iâve gotten for a while.â
âWait.â Her eyes opened with a flash, full of concern. âWhat about you?â
âWhat about me?â he raised an eyebrow, not understanding the question.
âYouâve become the orderâs champion. Our hero. But donât you have value beyond being a warrior or a soldier?â Hiraya asked.
âOh.â he was taken aback by that. His own future wasnât a subject he normally considered.
It was Corellanâs turn to look down at the duracrete floor of the base. He considered the strange twists and turns his life had taken, from his time growing up as a youngling on Uphrades all the way up to the present. He thought of the things heâd seen, the places heâd travelled to and the people heâd met. He thought of Sagottoh and Nowan, and the various masters and mentors who had followed them. He thought of Orgus Din and his life-changing experiences on Tython. He thought of his crew and all their missions together leading up to now.
A strange life for a Jedi. He observed. Not at all what heâd expected.
âI think I was always meant to serve the order in a⌠martial capacity, I suppose.â He finally said. âIf we werenât at war, Iâd probably be serving in some minor role, standing guard at the Temple of Tython, perhaps.â He recalled something Master Sagottoh had told him once. âJedi werenât intended to be soldiers or warriors. We were meant to be peacekeepers, counselors, and scholars and diplomats like you, for example.â
Just while speaking, heâd found his answer to her question, and how he saw himself within the Jedi.
âI fight for a galaxy where Iâm redundant.â Corellan expanded. âWhere Jedi like you are the norm, and ones like me are the exception. I expect if we ever defeated the Sith for good⌠when we defeat the Sith for good⌠Iâll just quietly withdraw from the wider galaxy and retire from the order. It would probably be better for everyone.â
He chuckled. The war had marked him, and it would continue to do so. He didnât know what heâd be by the time it was over.
âWeapons should not be left out unattended.â Â
Hiraya reached out, placing her hand on his. He was surprised by the simple gesture, drawing comfort from it.
âYou have more to offer the Jedi and the galaxy than your prowess with a lightsaber, Corellan Halcyon.â She smiled warmly. âYou are more than a weapon. Far more.â
Corellan found himself grinning boyishly, touched at the kindness in her words. He found himself feeling like a padawan again. He wasnât sure her words, but he did appreciate that someone would say that of him.
âThank you, Hiraya. Thatâs⌠very kind of you to say.â
She nodded in acknowledgement and sighed.
âWhy did it have to be us?â
Corellan could tell that the question was intended to be rhetorical, but still felt it deserved an answer regardless. Indeed, heâd been asking himself that same question not long ago. The conclusion heâd come to was not easy to hear, but she deserved the truth.
He reached back and touched her hand as she had his, gently but firmly.
âMaybe because weâre the only ones who can.â
Hirayas eyes widened in surprise, and she looked past him for a moment. There was regret in her eyes, but he could feel her steely resolve as well.
âPerhaps we are.â She finally replied. Though her words were passive, he could feel the strength and resolve behind them. This was the Jedi Master who had saved so many lives and forged an alliance of disparate factions. Thus was the Jedi Master who had accomplished so much and who represented what the Jedi should strive to be.
As the two started to turn for the exit, he stopped her. Â
âHey - when this is over? When you finally get a chance to catch your breath?â he gave her a hopeful look. âTake some time for yourself. Do whatever it is that brings you peace. You deserve it.â Â
Hiraya blinked as her cheeks blushed prettily, the corners of her lips turning upward into an unexpected grin as she looked past him again. Corellan couldnât say what thought had drawn that reaction from her, but he suspected that his words had led the Jedi Master to consider something very specific. He found his own thoughts turning to Kira and everything she meant to him. He drew comfort in the sensation, and strength for the battle to come.
âThank you.â She finally said. âFor that and everything. I hope in time you can follow the same advice.â
Corellan didnât miss her meaning, simply nodding firmly in thanks. He hoped the same, though he did not trust himself to say as much.
âDonât mention it.â Now girded, the soldier â the Jedi hero and the reluctant military commander â mentally snapped back into place. Rusk would no doubt approve. So would have Orgus Din. Â
âYou ready?â
âI am.â She answered, her lips turning upwards until her expression matched his.
And with that, the two Jedi departed the base. Corellia â and their destinies â awaited them.
Authorâs Notes: A little cliched, I know. But I wanted to write something soft.
@chaosandwonderâ is an amazing person, by the way. I am so grateful that she is part of this community. In Corellanâs story, Ulannium Kaarz is the Barsen'thor of the Jedi Order, and his tale follows that of the Jedi Counselor. Hence, I intentionally leave Syo Bakarnâs name out of it, so as not to compromise @chaosandwonderâ âs own story. Nevertheless, Hiraya seems a delightful character.
(In case it wasnât obvious, when Hiraya grins near the end she is supposed to be thinking about Felix.)
Corellanâs point of view of himself and the galaxy would change by the end of Knights of the Eternal Throne. But I wanted to discuss his perspectives at this particular point. He is humble, but more than that, he doesnât consider himself exceptional, except as a warrior.
The Jedi Knight on Corellia storyline can be a little frustrating. Satele claims to be putting you in charge of all Jedi forces on-planet, but this is clearly an exaggeration, as you find Jedi all over the planet who arenât under your command, not counting the ones from the Consular story. So Iâm simply calling Corellanâs group the âmain Jedi taskforceâ here.
Quick notes
- Iâve always liked the character of Rusk, underdeveloped though he is. Iâd like to explore Corellanâs relationship with him further in the future.
- Corellan doesnât know Jun Seros was a corrupt fanatic at this point. More on that later.
- I have more planned involving Sagottoh and Nowan.
