So I watched the drawing request livestream from today that I missed out on, and I must apologize! Near the end, Dana clarified that she preferred for the requests she drew to be Patron-exclusives, with her releasing them to the public as she saw fit; As such, I've deleted my previous post showcasing them. Sorry about that...

As for some fun facts I learned during the stream; Apparently Severine is named after Dana's middle name, Mary Severine! I thought Severine was a made-up name, in reference to the word 'Severing' as per Boiling Isles morbid aesthetic, but it's actually a real one! Dana Mary Severine Terrace...

Dana also mentioned how the red grass and purple trees of the Boiling Isles were meant to invoke a bruise that's healing; Symbolic of the Boiling Isles having issues it's dealing with, since even before Belos, and the colors of the isles were meant to convey the idea of Belos striking like a sledgehammer.

We very easily could've not had The Owl House, because of a coin flip! When deciding between Animation and Illustration as a career path, Dana literally flipped a coin to decide... Talk about a gift of fate! Though she did note throughout the stream that art direction isn't her thing, nor is illustration, as it focuses on fine-tuning specific details, whereas Dana prefers things like animation, writing, drawing, etc., getting her ideas out there. TOH might’ve still happened regardless.

And yes, Dana IS a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist, she watched both series when she was around 14 years old on Toonami! I freaking knew it, the similarities between TOH and FMA, the acknowledgement of Arakawa as someone Luz would've emulated in art... Dana prefers Brotherhood, since it's closer to the manga. The chimera episode messed her up like everyone else, and FMA was one of her favorite childhood cartoons alongside Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Champloo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Pokemon.

Dana also watched Dragonball Z, including the Buu and Cell arcs in real time, and was quite creeped out by Cell, as he was unlike anything she'd seen before; So the reference to DBZ in Eclipse Lake is probably from Dana's own experiences, as was the realization of how long it's been. Dana's first and favorite Ghibli film is Princess Mononoke, followed by Princess Kaguya, and she obsessed over the Gorillaz music videos.

Someone in chat suggested that for artists who want to get used to streaming themselves drawing, they can begin practicing by drawing in public! Dana liked the idea and encouraged people to also begin with friends to ease into it.

ok so. you know hit band gorillaz right. or at least vaguely aware of them. well i think they're incredibly cool & everything about them seems absolutely made for me. they're FICTIONAL singers (I LOVE fictional singers bc im always uncomfortable obsessing over real people). also their animation is STUNNING. most of their music videos are 2d animation ever superimposed on a 3d environment or just over footage of real life and it always looks SO COOL. I LOVE 2D AND 3D ANIMATION BEING MERGED IT ALWAYS HAS SUCH A UNIQUE AND COOL QUALITY TO IT. however. there is one major issue i have with gorillaz and that is. i. do not like their music. i just. don't. like sure, rhinestone eyes slaps, and a few other songs in plastic beach are OKAY, and that one time they did a collab with elton john (my avengers endgame btw i love elton john so much) was quite good but. overall. i just dont like it. actually the music video for feel good inc encapsulates this very well because IT IS LORE RELEVANT. IT IS ANIMATED STUNNINGLY. THE SHOT WITH THE WINDMILL BOBBING IN THE CLOUDS IS CARVED INTO MY BRAIN. OVERALL ITS JUST REALLY COOL. BUT THE MUSIC IS JUST. yeah i know gorillaz my sibling really likes them! but yeah i get what you mean cos like they built all the lore and stuff and the characters & the animation is quite cool (i had actually. never seen the video for feel god inc until now lol) but the music is sort of aimed at like. teenage boys who think theyre cooler than they are yknow? like obnoxious guys from my music class Wish their music sounded like gorillaz. my condolences though its like soooo close to something that would be perfect yknow?

🌻 How often do you read your own fics?

Honestly? Not that often. I think it's been a good year or two since I've read any of my finished Gorillaz fics. However, I'll go back to look up specifics if I get a review or an ask discussing scenes or dialogue that I don't remember exactly. I spend so much time structuring and re-writing my past works I think I'll always remember where everything is.

🎨 If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

That's a tough one! I like to encourage anyone who's interested in drawing a scene to go with whatever inspires them personally. I will say that The Answer started in my head with one scene - Murdoc genuinely smiling - no sarcasm, no smugness - just a real, happy smile up at the sky after he drops 2D off at the airport. At the time, I didn't know why 2D was leaving him, but I knew I wanted to get him to that point of peace within himself where he would be able to let 2D go, and be able to embrace everything about that process - his fears, his relief, his freedom etc. No one's ever drawn that scene (at the end of chapter 25), so if I had to pick one to hope for, it would be that one, but it's also okay! I'm grateful and still obsessed with all the fanart I've received over the years, @ anyone who's drawn me fanart - you're all so kind and talented!!! I remember and will always remember you and everything you've done! It warms my heart to this day.

DC Talk - Jesus Freak: i have become OBSESSED with this christian rap rock (kind of) band. couldn't explain it very well myself but i think they're really fun and super silly. i've been listening to this particular song for quite some time now but it's only recently that my full obsession has developed and i've been getting other people roped into it too..... i'm just spreading the good word 😁

Whitechapel - The Saw Is the Law: had this one stuck in my head something FIERCE these past few weeks. just that crusher chorus line is so fucking good, I never was a huge whitechapel fan but they go hard when the mood is right. played it at work and everything

The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again: cumming all over myself i love the riff and the melodies and there are some real good lines despite very few lyrics overall... admittedly that squeaky chipmunk harmony is pretty goofy but when the rest of it is so good who even care.

Faith No More - Midlife Crisis: i like this one more and more every time i hear it. a friend of mine introduced me to this and it's been stuck in my head relentlessly ever since. also definitely goofy as fuck but i love the kinda hardcore-type vocals mike patton throws into the verses, especially in the live version and the big swelling bridge. a song like this makes me get why people talk about faith no more as "proto-nu metal" or whatever..... fred durst would do some shit like this <3 also got this played on the radio station

Butthole Surfers - Cough Syrup: i don't like this band as much as i wish i did, though i've certainly got plenty more listening to do. def some stupid lyrics here bc it's the butthole surfers but i actually really really like "i can't talk so i guess i got nothing to say." something about that one

Third Eye Blind - Jumper: it's back! i think i've expended all the words i have about this already but man what a good little pop song

Breaking Benjamin - Skin: great example of how enjoying breaking benjamin is more about hearing the loud guitars and the unique syllabic experience of ben's weird as hell enunciation than it is about anything original or lyrical. what the hell is this song about i don't know. but it bangeth mightily. this also stands to represent that i and mine have been listening to a fuckton of bb lately

Elliott Smith - Cupids Trick: a dear friend of mine has put me on that elliott smith shit fairly recently and i think this is my fav from either/or... the riff so good and it's catchy and has a really dark punchy sound compared to the rest of the record (which is also real good! but just different)

Gorillaz - Cracker Island: heard this on the radio a ways back and instantly came all over myself and said "omg who is this is this the new sound of the summer????" and then looked it up and saw that it was a band i already know that's been around for decades ^_^ but it's just a banger and they found one good hook and punched it up to 11!!

Kittie - Eyes Wide Open: KITTIE BACK???? and with a rager O_O <me when my eyes are wide open. lol. not much further commentary here i'm just excited for the new record and i hope it's good and not bad

Enon - Window Display: my experience continues of getting into this band at the pace of a tortoise or perhaps a snail. p sure this is like the biggest song from them and. it good! they just have a tastey sound and i like the vocalist's delivery

Lamb Of God - Redneck: been on some metalcore shit too and like groove metal and shit and it hardly gets better than lamb of god. i feel like i haven't often properly appreciated them but what a consistently banger band. and this one just has some cool catchy parts that have been in my head since like high school. JUST! ONE! TIME!!!!!

Insane Clown Posse - Halls Of Illusions: my friends and i have been indulging in what we're calling "fucked up friday" which sometimes includes icp as a soundtrack. still want to listen to the full album with people at some point. but anyway i never took too too much notice of this track until a friend put it on and i realized how good it is. and frankly kind of saw-coded w it

Drowning Pool - Tear Away: kind of not great but the chorus glued itself to me. sort of the death toll of nu metal giving in to the way of the post-grunge ballad but man this vocalist was damn solid!

im not done obsessing over this drawing that i drew so while i dont have any writing requests im gonna talk about Pumpkin

(everything is in early phases of gorillaz)

Pumpkin

-Pumpkin is in his early 20s but its hard to tell because hes technically "undead"

-he is my OC in the Gorillaz universe, but i intend on taking him much further and using him for my own art/music adventures (i write music lol)

-he/him pronouns

-hes like actually clinically insane, im not joking this dude is mental but like not in the "imma kill you" way in the "im gonna steal shopping carts, attach motors, and race them with 2D" way

-technically 2D is the one that accidentally woke him from the dead (he pissed on his grave without knowing, noticed it was a grave, then dumped beer on it as an "apology"??? but like it woke Pumpkin up and he just kinda claimed 2D as his friend)

-He has a little sister (not biological just kinda claimed her) named Stella, they work on music together, she sings and he plays bass

-his real head is inside of the pumpkin, when he was buried (in like early 1920s...) his head was sticking out of the ground and a pumpkin eventually just grew around it

-hes pretty much a zombie (dont tell 2D or else itll be endless questions)

-he lurked around Kong studios for a bit, he eventually stole clothes from 2D once he realised his close were rotten

-thats when 2D actually met him, 2D caught pumpkin in the act of climbing out of his window and instead of being angry just offered him a beer

-pumpkin stared at 2D for a second, thought about it, then accepted and dumped the beer down one of his eye holes because he has no mouth

-when i say him and 2D get into a lot of dumb shit i mean a LOT, these men have almost been caught by the cops to many times to count

-none of the other members really know of pumpkin, Noodle eventually finds him living in the basement of Kong but never says anything, she just randomly comes down and make him play tea party when everyone else is busy

-he actively steals from the gorillaz members, but like nothing big just "hey where did my shirt go? hey wheres that leftover pizza? where is my pocket knife?"

-he eventually starts making his own music once he meets Stella, shes around 18/19 and they meet because she babysits Noodle when the guys are busy from time to time

-pumpkin kinda just looks at her and goes "hmm sister" and thats that

-before Pumpkin had a "nest" (bean bags and other random things he stole to make a bed) he slept on 2Ds floor or crashed with him in his bed (totally just platonic bro things...)

-he adapted really quickly to the early 2000s considering hes from 1920

-prob cuz he doesn't remember his life like at all

-hes roughly the same height as 2D, 2D likes to say that it doesnt count cuz his stem makes him taller

-generally a very similar style to 2D, maybe a little more punk

-this man has the worst RBF youll ever see, like he constantly looks tired and pissed

-Unfortunately for you, she’s more attached to Skeptic and it’s looking like it’ll be that way until she’s at least in her teen years. It doesn’t mean that she loves you any less so don’t worry! She just has an affinity toward leaning to Tomoyasu ever since she was just a little baby it seems. This isn’t always a great thing for him at least. She hits that age now where she throws temper tantrums at the smallest things (a hothead like her daddy), so when he rejects spending time with her in favor of work, she loses her mind. She’s a crier...She cries LOUD and for a long time, but has the odd ability to shut it off like a switch when she wants to. She spends a lot of time trying to pull him away from work for every little thing.

-This girl has a weird obsession with bugs. She loves all creepy crawlies and especially the spiders. For her 4th birthday, she wanted a spider and bug themed party. A lot of the kids in her class were scared of that, but there was also a good bit that enjoyed the various bug themed snacks and party favors. You’ll often find her playing out after it rained, picking up rocks along the walkway and collecting snails from underneath. You have to keep telling her to put them back. If you don’t then you’ll find them in the house again. Don’t even get me started with the frogs...

-Her favorite movie of all time is Hotel Transylvania 2. Nope not the first or any of the others. Just the second one only. To a 5 year old, watching the same movie over and over again never gets boring. To you and Tomoyasu it’s a different story. The two of you know the movie by heart now. You’ve basically been brainwashed and can act out the movie without reference if the two of you ever wanted to do so.

-She sleeps with a mushroom nightlight every night and she prefers that it stays on green no matter what. When you asked if that was her favorite color she said no. There is no explanation behind the green light, but you don’t question it much these days anymore.

-Tomoko is always invested in whatever Skeptic is working on. Although she doesn’t understand anything he’s doing, that won’t stop her from pulling up a chair and sitting next to him. She’ll watch him, mesmerized by the rapid typing on his keyboard. Most of the time she sits next to him and uses her coloring book. She has a large collection of them! Both her and Tomoyasu haven’t the best posture. She’s unfortunately picked it up by watching him so you’ll have to keep reminding him to sit up straight when around her at least.

-Absolutely adores daddy Skeptic’s ‘grown-up music’. You worked hard to curate a lovely kids playlist full of classic Ghibli songs as well as nursery rhymes. It’s all to waste since Tomoko prefers Gorillaz and Tame Impala now. “Tomoyasu, I’m not sure she should go back to school singing Dirty Harry to the rest of the kids. It’s a song concerning war and rather adult themes.” It’s a musical war you won’t win because Tomoko will whine until she hears her favorites come over the radio. Now your 5 year old knows all the words to songs she probably should know the words to just yet lol.

-The kid has a huge heart but also won’t let anyone step all over her. She’s a sweetheart always looking out for others around her. She takes her own school lunch and feeds it to the squirrels at recess (a habit you and Skeptic are trying to break her from). She helps out at school and around the house. She even tries to use all her strength in those tiny arms to open doors for strangers in public. You’ll have to help her with that one! At the same time, she’s not a push-over. Spending so much time with daddy she’s bound to pick up on some of his not so desirable traits. Poor Tomoyasu tries to hide his melt-downs from his daughter but she’s caught the tail end of a few of them, secretly watching from a distance as he berates an associate over the phone. I’ve been sitting on these head cannons for a while, not really sure why. Some of them are more thought out than others, guess that’s why I haven’t felt ready to publish them, but I don’t think I’ll ever find the time to fine tune them so I’m just going to throw them out here.

These are “scandal” head cannons for if the Gorillaz were real people, except for the first one about 2D, which is just a nice thought imo lol.

Anyway, here they are.

-2D got into producing during the bands hiatus between getting back from his not-so deserted island experience and Humanz. He’s now a very sought after indie music producer. Won an independent Grammy in 2019 for producer of the year. He loves to do it because it gives him a sense of purpose outside of Gorillaz and helping out up and coming music acts is extremely fulfilling to him. He also loves to collaborate outside of Gorillaz. Bands will seek out his unique vocals for back up singing and occasional covers of other songs.

-2D has embarrassing memory lapses brought on my his head trauma and pill abuse that gossip rags always love to print about. He’s been known to be found peeing on the sides of buildings, ragging on and insulting strangers on the streets or crashing other people’s weddings or parties. He often comes to and can’t remember how or why he ended up there.

-Murdoc has had several write ups over the years for being an abusive boyfriend. He keeps luring women and the occasional man around only to get belligerent with them and start loud, over the top fights that draw crowds. The Daily Mail publishes every piece sent in about him, regardless of if it’s true. Occasionally the stories have a leg to stand on but mostly it’s conjecture from “anonymous sources”. In these times, 2D will always stand up for him, prompting the DM to start the rumors that he has Stockholm Syndrome, a rumor that has the power to send 2D into tirades. Occasionally he’ll be so high out of mind that he’ll go off on nonsense tangents about Murdoc and how these people are just after attention cause he’s famous and that the abuse he’s endured was never “that bad” even though there’s interviews and evidence pointing to the opposite.

-Speaking of The Daily Mail, the love to constantly speculate over the status of 2D and Murdoc’s relationship. Over the passed 20or so years, they’ve been the only publication to run actual compromising pictures of them together

-Noodle has a reputation for getting shit faced out at club and god forbid she’s out with Murdoc. They enable each other to drink more and more. Noodle gets Like embarrassingly falling over drunk and saying wild ass shit. Most of the time though she’s caught shouting in Japanese at paps and autograph seekers. It’s gotten so bad in more recent years that Noodle is starting receive bans from a few of the same nightclubs Murdoc already can’t get into.

-Russel had a reputation in the early 2000s for being caught talking to himself. It became a crazy obsession in the media for a few years, who was going to catch Russel staring at walls muttering to himself and also causing a lot of speculation as to the nature of his relationship with Del while he was alive. Occasionally those times would devolve into him looking spun out an homeless especially after Dels exorcism. He would still chatter like he was there but really he’d just gone mad. Took an extended break as a posh recovery center after the events of plastic beach, his captive stay in North Korea triggered his muttering again.

-Russel is a secret hacker, but for Robin Hood do goodings. Likes to hack into databases to wipe people’s debts or give kids lunch money for school. Almost got caught once leaving a campus getting recognized but managed to bribe the student with an autograph.

-Russ has also been caught buying black market, endangered animals for his Frankenstein-taxidermy. Getting deeper into his hobby, he wanted make the ultimate endangered animal. He claims he didn’t see anything wrong with him, since he was technically preserving the animals and they were already dead when he bought them.

-To that point, his room smells awful. Like fermeldahide and death. Also Murdoc likes to take dips of said fermeldahide to make whet joints to take on adventures. Which usually end up in him tripping his balls off.

-Noodle has mpd. She has triggers for her alters that over the years she’s able to keep controlled but in her teens especially she’d get caught out in public claiming to be someone else and dressing the part. Her alters stem from the abuse she endured as a child soldier. It’s a tactic used to make her a better assassin so her main Noodle personality won’t be able to recall the pain and horror she’s inflicted on people.

-Noodle likes to commit petty crimes for fun, and has been caught on camera several timesSometimes Murdoc will join her, but when they do, the crimes usually escalate beyond petty. The most fun they’ve had together is hot wiring random cars and taking them for joy rides. They always try to return them but usually forget where they came from.

-Murdoc still gets the itch to commit arson from time to time and usually finds old abandoned homes or factories to light up. He’s been arrested for a few but there’s never enough evidence to nail him for the crimes, he’s gotten too good at it.

-Murdoc has several off shore bank accounts and shell corporations. They’ve been talked about in the press marginally but no one really knows what they’re for or where he gets all that money or what he needs it for. “And you never will,” he says, no doubt.

I recently got back into Gorillaz and rewatched all the music videos that have since come out and have been obsessing over 2D’s eyes for the last few hours. All throughout Phase 1, 2, and 4 they’re black. But in Phase 3 they are almost always white, are exclusively white in Phase 6, and are mostly white in Phase 5 with the exception of the part in Humility where 2D’s head gets hurt and he blinks and his eyes that had been white for the entire video turn black.

I think it was really interesting that the meaning of white colored eyes for 2D specifically was suddenly changed following Phase 4. For most fans, it was pretty easy to believe that 2D’s eyes were white because of an intense amount of stress and anxiety. He was trapped on an island in the middle of nowhere, imprisoned underwater where a whale constantly watched his actions as a giant psychological mindfuck, and the only other characters he had constant interaction with was one of the most abusive assholes in the world who has basically taken control of his 2D’s life whenever he wants no matter what 2D may or may not want and a cyborg imitation of one of his best friends/ pseudo child that only follows Murdoc’s orders and can kill anybody on command with the weapons in her body. Of course he’d be stressed the fuck out and what better way would there be to show this in a character who is known for his eyes being black suddenly turning white as if somehow instead of his skin turning pale like a normal person’s does when scared and anxious, the blood making his eyes black rushes out. Then he came back in Humanz with black eyes and it seemed everything was back to whatever Gorillaz version of normal is, meaning 2D was less stressed or dealing with his stress better and his eyes were back to black. When Humility came out and 2D’s eyes were white while he seemed so happy and free, it was the real head spinning moment.

I think If Noodle had been right in thinking 2D had been possessed like Russel and that was why he was acting so different than before and had white eyes in Phase 5, that might have been a little much even for Gorillaz since while 2D is one of the more odd looking members of the band, he is also the most relatively normal member. He had a fairly normal childhood with the exception of the accident that led him to have blue hair, he has loving parents with normal jobs, and between phases he had pretty average stories of working at his dad’s fairground and going to school or traveling. He wasn’t Murdoc who made deals with the devil, or Noodles who was a child soldier and assassin also dealing with literal demons, or Russel who had been possessed and turned into a giant because of chemicals as he swam to Plastic Beach. There’s no real connection he has to anything exceptionally strange or supernatural until Phase 6 and that’s not particularly exceptional since everyone in the band also interacts with the portals.

I’ve heard two different theories about why 2D’s eyes are now almost exclusively white. One is that his eyes mimic the energy and emotion he feels. Black is a neutral state. Extreme happiness or extreme sadness/ stress? White eyes. I think it’s a fairly decent explanation. It feels like a better fit for 2D while also explaining why he has the same colored eyes for such conflicting emotions and circumstances. It doesn’t have quite as much depth as I would hope for though. The second theory is that 2D’s eyes being black has been because of consistent head trauma because people who suffer from 8-ball fractures should be able to heal and their eyes turn back to normal, but they also need to be more careful of their head hitting anything because it can easily send blood rushing back into the eyes. While Noodles is definitely the most dangerous of the group, Murdoc has always been the one to become violent easily, and seems fond of finding reasons to harm 2D. During Phase 3 (the lore not the clips), Murdoc and 2D are all alone and are not performing. During Phase 5, Murdoc isn’t around because he’s in jail, and when he returns in Phase 6, he no longer has as much power within Gorillaz and doesn’t seem as prone to anger and violence as before. In this theory, 2D’s eyes being black has been the result of Murdoc continuously hurting his head to maintain the specific image of 2D that he had when he woke up from his coma, the same image that 2D had when Gorillaz was originally being marketed. For Phase 3, they’re not touring at all, so 2D doesn’t need to keep his black eyes. For Phase 5 and 6 Murdoc is either not present or not attempting to harm 2D. His eyes are white not to show a specific emotional state but because they’re healing since he hasn’t suffered continuous head trauma from Murdoc anymore. While I think this is a more interesting theory that delves into the interesting and fucked up relationship between 2D and Murdoc, I have very clear memories of clips from Murdoc’s radio show while on Plastic Beach. Sometimes 2D would come in and those would end with major fights between the two that included the sound of physical hitting, things being thrown, and 2D making very big dramatic noises that sounded like he was hurt or scared. I can’t imagine that the entire time 2D and Murdoc were stuck on Plastic Beach together, Murdoc didn’t just decide to hit 2D whenever he felt like it which is why this theory also isn’t entirely full proof.

I feel like there’s this great middle ground theory somewhere between the two that actually makes a lot of sense. Because even in Phase 3, despite 2D being believed to have white eyes throughout the entire phase, in the artwork and videos his eyes do go back and forth from black to white and vice versa. This could just be a lack of consistent character design, but it could also be a way of showing 2D’s complexity despite him seeming to gradually be more uwu-fied by the story and fans. I guess I’m going more along the mental state route, but I guess 2D’s eye color could indicate his clarity of mind at the time? Or how focused his mind is? For his eyes to be white is for him to have a focus on a fairly simple singular goal or have a somewhat definitive idea of who he is, what he wants to be, and what he wants to do. He is trapped inside his underwater prison bedroom in Plastic Beach and his eyes are white? His singular goal is getting out but he doesn’t have the ability to because he is worried about the whale seeing him. He’s on Plastic Beach with Murdoc and Cyborg Noodle and his eyes are black? It’s been a while since he’s been on the island, long enough that Murdoc will let him leave the prison bedroom and roam under supervision, and he’s lost looking out into the ocean trapped with Murdoc and a dangerous imitation of someone close to him he thinks is dead and will never get to the see the sunset again, or sing with him, and oh god she would have been an adult and she practically was one compared to the rest of them when she died and Cyborg lacks all her warmth and he can’t tell if it’s better or worse that Murdoc attempted to recreate Noodle at 14 then attempt to create the wonderful adult she could have turned into at 19 and where the fuck is Russel. He’s skating and having the time of his life with Murdoc gone? He’s free and enjoying himself and wow this album that he’ll be a major creative force behind will be amazing and he’ll make sure it is and Noodle and Russel will be there and they’ll all support each other and he can experiment with sound in a way he’s feared to do since Murdoc came into his life. He trips and hits his head but quickly shakes it off and his eyes that briefly turned black are white again? The hit and the somewhat imposing blurry figure of Russel standing over him briefly sent him spiraling back to a place in time he would order not to revisit, but he knows where he is and who he is and while his confidence is shaken, he still knows what’s happening. His eyes are still white as he reaches back down through a portal to a fearful and hopeful Murdoc smiling with outstretched arms because Murdoc’s fear is that he has no use, no power, and has been abandoned to die in the middl of nowhere with the palace he attempted to create long ago and imprisoned 2D in? He knows that Murdoc has been a horrible person and may always to some degree be one and while he will never forget the physical verbal and emotional abuse, he can see Murdoc attempting to be a better person every day and knows that he will never know the person Murdoc could be if he let him die but also that he Stuart 2D Pott is not a killer, and not even Murdoc fucking Niccals will make him be one.

Idk. I feel like there’s so much that could potentially be done with 2D and his eyes and it’s just never fully addressed even though it could easily provide a short hand for understanding his emotions and development and relationships with other characters.

Honestly? King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard! When I saw them “Infest the Rat’s Nest” hadn’t been released yet and they played the entirety of the album + some others including my favorite song by them. It was an unforgettable show!

I would maim someone for the chance to see Pelle Ohlin perform, either with Morbid or Mayhem Im not even picky

Gorillaz: Plastic Beach

mAh, nostalgia. This album was my high school years. I got a digital copy for my birthday from my mom and became obsessed with this album well into college. The dominance of electronica, the use of people with great voices, the expansion of the lore, Lou Reed...this album was all of music when I got it. It's my favorite Gorillaz album and it looks like it's gonna stay that way for a while. But how is it on a not even approaching semi-objective level? Let's find out.

1. Orchestral Intro

You can probably guess it by my awful taste but I'm not really into orchestra. This opening though, with the sound of waves and the mourning instruments, really tipped me off that I was in for something different. This album wasn't going to start off with something chill or even a zombie movie clip. No, at this point, Gorillaz were officially done fucking around.

2. Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach

Then we get the brass leading us into a good beat and then HOLY SHIT, SNOOP DOGG?! He leads us in like a bandleader while a chorus of women back him up Just Like That while he goes with his usual flow. He adds the needed touch of instant cool to an album that's practically frozen with the artists already on it and with this song, it feels like you're walking past the gate into Disneyland.

3. White Flag

Some nice Arabian sounding instruments on this one. Pretty cool for Gorillaz to keep engaging in world music. Anyway, this was a really cool instrumental but it's time to move on to the other son---

Suddenly, we get beeps and mixes backing up Bashy and Kano as they kick so much ass talking about pacifism for the sake of survival. This song kicks an undisputed amount of ass and it barely even tries.

4. Rhinestone Eyes

What I like about this song is that I keep finding new things to like about it as the years go back. First, I liked the weirdly-threatening nature of the song along with the woman moaning in time with the verses. Then I liked the video (even though it was insanely shady of EMI to release that without Damon's and Jamie's permission and it ended up being the thing that led to Phase 3's premature ending and Gorillaz going on hiatus). Then I liked the continuation of the moaning that I first noticed in live performances then finally heard in the song itself. This song is like Rolexes falling from the sky.

5. Stylo

Ah, the first single from the album. I remember telling my dad about this when I first saw the video for it. I was about to write off Gorillaz as a relic of my past before I saw Murdoc and 2D get run off the road by Bruce Willis. This song has an awesome bridge by Yasiin Bey, nice crooning by Damon Albarn and incredible back-up by Bobby Womack, who manages to lift the entire song over his head using just his voice. Damn, wish he had another song that put his voice on full display. Maybe later in the album...

6. Superfast Jellyfish

Yeah, De La Soul is back! And they're singing about TV dinners! Seriously, these guys can make guessing crossword actually fun instead of a dredging experience and have Shiny Toy Guns frontman Chad Petree singing about radioactive seas brings the whole thing home. It makes you want to really go out and eat a random jellyfish but don't do that. It'll hurt.

7. Empire Ants

Okay, before I give this song its totally fair score, it should be noted this is my third favorite song of all time. I love Damon's reassuring lyrics in the beginning but the switch in the middle to a more upbeat electronic pop tune pushes this song past perfect.

Then there's Little Dragon...

This song introduced to me to Yukimi Nagano's voice and wow...I didn't think humans could sound like that, let alone an Asian woman singing soul. If you think the instruments are carrying her here, obviously there are clearly no other songs on the album that showcase her talents so I have to recommend After The Rain, Twice and Constant Surprises by Little Dragon. Seriously, this woman's voice will water your fucking crops.

8. Glitter Freeze

Where is north from here? Don't ask me, I'm not a compass. Anyway, this song has Mark E. Smith from The Fall and they use him to his fullest extent...by which I mean letting him make an absolutely evil fucking laugh somewhere near the end. The instrumentation makes it feel like you're in a storm on a shaky ship and you're definitely going to feel like you need some pills after you're finished. This stuff will put hair on your chest.

9. Some Kind of Nature

This song introduced me to Lou Reed and I'm grateful to it for that. Lou was a shitty dude but damn his voice really made things better than they should have been. Fuck, I was one of the eight defenders of Lulu for this reason. But Damon doesn't sit with his thumbs up his ass on this song. He holds his own and makes the chorus sound legitimately dreamlike. All we are is stars, indeed.

10. On Melancholy Hill

This song is awesome to chill to...unless you're escaping a cruise ship while being gunned down by fighter jets. But other than that particular example, I recommend this song for anyone trying to relax while thinking of someone special. But be careful with the last note of this song. That gong can be a real eye opener.

Bummer of a song but if there's one song you absolutely NEED to learn on melodica, it's this one. Aren't we all broken? Well I am. And this song speaks to me.

12. Sweepstakes

Yasiin's back and there's gonna be trouble. He plays a carny in this track and you know that no matter how many times you listen to this song, you'll always gonna fall for his schemes. He's gone on to say that this is one of his finest achievements as a MC and I can see why.

Holy shit, they got the 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover guy on this track. Makes since because this, outside of Empire Ants, is my favorite song on the album. The harmony, the little imp they got for the bridge, the triangle...everything makes this song better than it has any right to be on an already awesome album. Damn, plastico indeed.

14. To Binge

Shock of all shocks, Yukimi's back! And it's a duet with Damon! And it's a song about a relationship torn apart by addiction! It's not my birthday so it must be Christmas. These two manage to drown the listen in waves of audio goodness that leaves them feeling like they spent 3 minutes and 56 seconds standing under a waterfall.

15. Cloud of Unknowing

Okay, I cried to this song. And now, with Bobby Womack's passing, I cry even harder. This song should be an anime ending with how solemn it is but you need to listen to the end to hear, "It may bring sunshine on its wings." Also, Damon covered this song live after Womack's passing. I suggest you look it up because it is tear-ripping.

Who would you say are some of your greatest artistic influences?

I grew up on Disney movies and classic Cartoon Network shows. Hanna-Barbera stuff, lots of Genndy Tartakovsky content! Those were my early inspirations. I got obsessed with Gorillaz and Jamie Hewlett’s art in general when Gorillaz first started - I was about 13 at the time. He was pretty much the only single artist I ever really fawned over but that stopped eventually. (I still like his style, just not that crazy about it anymore.) I really liked Dürer and Toulouse-Lautrec as a teenager as well.

I never really latched onto a single artist or their art later on, I just kinda follow a variety of them. My friends and my husband @cameronaugust have definitely been an influence on me though. I think my semi-realism improved a lot thanks to working with Cam. Sometimes I draw a hand, look at it and go “that’s a Cam hand” because I wasn’t able to do that before :D

I know this might seem weird coming from someone with a blog that has been dominated by a single OC for the last 7 years but I have a hard time getting obsessed with new things for long periods of time. Real life people, especially. Even if I find someone’s art fantastic, I will not obsess about it the way I might have before, as a kid. Maybe that’s just part of growing up or I’m callous like that. :/
