Duran Duran spin-off Arcadia released a bunch of vinyl in Japan, so here’s a family photo of the album and three 12” remixes. The paper OBI strips that wrap around the sleeves are artworks unto themselves in some cases, making for some striking covers.

Well, I’ve learnt basic Japanese over the past couple of weeks so can confidently tell you that you’re listening to The Takayuki Inoue Band performing music from the LP “Resurrected, Those Detectives !!” Not sure if it’s a film or a TV series- even the internet can let you down sometimes.

The internet has however finally solved the mystery of the OBI strip for me- the colourful band of shiny printed paper wrapped around the left hand side of new Japanese records and other audio/visual media. I’m not a voracious consumer of Japanese vinyl at all so was never particularly bothered by them or curious about their purpose. Of course, now with endless time available for the pursuit of pointless knowledge, I’ve discovered that the OBI (帯, Japanese for belt- originally the one used to secure a traditional kimono or yukata) is packed full of information; original release date, production date, exact selling price, a date after which said price can be legally discounted and, of course, all the usual catalogue numbers, artist’s names etc found on the record label itself. There. Riveting.

So that’s how I’m spending my time. Did you know that the city with the heaviest annual snowfall is in Northern Japan and that the Fins, per capita, drink more coffee than any other nation on the planet? Neither did I. I’m also learning new things about my navel.

Here’s a Japanese Billy Squier EP with two live tracks on Side A and a round-up of three hits on Side B. I used the Google Translate app to read some of the liner notes and they seem to be pure stream-of-consciousness, with the writer noting that the EP is being released to coincide with Squier’s Japanese concerts that May but that the EP won’t be out until June, and that he’s writing the notes in mid-April, so he’s never seen Squier play but surely they’ll be good concerts because the live tracks sound ok. It’s a riot. At least the music’s good.
