Chapter 18 commentary

Chapter 18 Angelique 

I actually started writing the outline for this chapter in 2020 (which was very different when I look back on it) and then I started fleshing it out in October and November of 2022. 

Around that time two people in my family became ill for a long time and they passed away 9 months apart from each other. May God rest their souls.

So there was a period of time where I mourned and many of my hobbies went on the back burner. 

I was finally inspired again at the end of 2024 and beginning of 2025 to finish this chapter.

Chapter 17 had Obi-Wan and Ferus on their recon trip and Chapter 18 is a “meanwhile on Naboo” telling.

(Read the chapter first because there are spoilers below.)

There’s a sense of urgency in this chapter. We have Anakin focused on repairing the ship and impatient to get it done.  He’s got countdown clocks, he’s dreaming of running after his soon-to-be-born son, he’s even a bit impatient with his family at the end. 

I also wanted to show the passage of time by mentioning that Padmé is 20 weeks pregnant. In Chapter 15 she was 17 weeks. I liked the scene I added of Padmé having some “me time” where she reflects on the friends she misses.

The new name of the ship, Angelique, is a different version of angel, but also I have loved the name since I was a teenager watching Dark Shadows reruns on the Sci-Fi network. Angelique was the witch played by Lara Parker. 

Obviously the kids are still going to have some PTSD with going back to the scene of the crime. Jeswi doesn't want to participate in fixing the ship and doesn't like the name change. Sors is conflicted.  He doesn't want to go, but he’s also looking for Anakin’s approval. 

What I hope came across is that I’m trying to build their personalities. I’ve turned Jeswi into a little fashionista. I also wanted to show some little signs of their Force abilities, like perfectly guessing passwords and predicting the mail. 

Speaking of which, I have to gradually build up a father-children relationship and I’m quite proud of how the scenes between Anakin and Jeswi and Anakin and Sors turned out. He’s already decided he’s raising any of his children to be different Jedi. Jeswi is allowed to miss Jin-Lo and Sors can be a married Jedi. I think the scene with Sors added some humor to the chapter. 

Lastly, when Obi-Wan and Ferus come back I didn't want to rehash the last chapter too much, but just have enough as a reminder. With Anakin curbing his anger I originally had him pacing and cursing under his breath. But then I figured that was too immature. He’d grown since he was 19 in Attack of the Clones. He’s been a general in a war, but also like Darth Vader at the end of Revenge of the Sith, he wants to destroy the whole room. Only everyone in the hangar is watching, including the kids who can see the scene from the cockpit. And Sors and Jeswi are his constant reminder of what he’s capable of if he doesn't keep his anger in check. 

Which brings me to his scene with Obi-Wan, and him passing on advice inspired by Qui-Gon. Anakin’s got to work through some issues.  And both he and Obi-Wan are keeping secrets.

The day went on and on like that. Some of the clones were better than others at self defense. Lara went through all of them, not even breaking a sweat, while Anakin and Obi Wan watched from their table, taking marks on what they saw. Honestly, Lara had taken them all apart, so the two men weren’t sure what exactly she was looking for. Rex had watched in silence, wondering what it was like to be up there fighting her.

When she finished her last candidate, she walked over and picked up her quarter staff, and addressed the table. “Any of you four good at sparring with a quarter staff?” Kenobi and Anakin shook their heads.

“Swords only I’m afraid.” Obi Wan replied. “Besides your question is clearly a challenge, and most likely a trap. I’m not that ignorant.”

“Come on now. Not even one of you four will get up here? I’ll play nice.”

Cody looked over at Rex and piped up “Rex can do it. He’s pretty good at sparring.”

Lara looked at Cody with a slightly irritated expression. A trap indeed. She looked over at Rex, who was shooting Cody a ‘what a dick move!’, look. Rex looked back to Lara and sighed, getting up slowly. “Fine. But when she puts me in the infirmary, you all remember this was Cody’s idea.”

The men all laughed and Lara smiled. “I give you my word, no infirmary will be necessary.”

Lara tossed Rex a quarter staff and stepped over to the center of the ring painted on the tarmac. She stood with the staff in the crook of her arm, straight vertical to the ground, and when he lined up to face her, she looked him in the eyes and bowed respectfully. Their eyes were locked on the other as he returned her bow. All three men at the table shared a glance - the look between Lara and Rex was positively steaming.

Lara started to pace around Rex to the right, rotating the staff in a circle on her wrist, watching him from the corner of her eyes. Rex turned to pace opposite her, waiting for the next step. She was lightning quick, he’d watched every sparring match with her that afternoon. She didnt project her movements, because she seemed to move on the fly so well. He saw her stop spinning the staff and started to move towards her, guessing she was about to come after him. He was right; he stepped into the ring just as she danced towards him to try for a side blow with her staff. He got his up to block her in time, and saw surprise and calculation light her eyes. He whirled back away from her, continuing his spin to bring the staff down towards her legs, attempting a swipe. She hopped up in the air over his strike, did a back flip, landing lightly and immediately gathering herself for a jump spin air kick at his face. He just jerked his head back to dodge the blow. So that’s how it’s gonna be, he thought. Okay, game on then, General.

Their fight got fiercer. Rex was actually very accomplished at hand to hand combat, and after watching her all afternoon, he had an idea of how to stay slightly ahead of her. The problem was, she didn’t tire, while he did. Lara started to wear him down, and the first sign was when she was able to snatch his legs right out from under him. He landed on his back, staring up at the sky in surprise. Lara didn’t offer to help him up, rather he saw she was about to finish this match with her staff planted against his chest or throat to show him he was dead. He rolled away from her and managed to get his feet under him, his staff up to defend. She stopped a foot away from him, her staff cocked at an angle, her eyes narrowed in concentration. He returned her look, eye to eye. He wasn’t going out peacefully - she was going to have to earn this win. Lara backed off a bit, opting to circle him again like an angry tigress. Rex circled opposite her, then went on the attack.

Lara did a backwards block, getting the staff over her shoulder and down to keep him from getting her from behind. She rolled forward in a somersault and popped up, turned and struck at him, getting blocked again. This time she did a back round out to put space between them, and Rex went after her, not realizing it was a trap to draw him in. As soon as her feet touched the ground, she leapt over his head in a front flip, spun in midair and cracked the staff over his back, hard enough to send him flying. Rex landed on his face, rolled to his back as soon as he could but before he could defend himself, he saw her spin her staff above him. She leaned in on one knee, bearing the staff down with two hands, pointed at his neck. Anger flared in both their eyes; Rex wanted to get up and fight her more. For her part, Lara was breathing heavier than she had the entire day, nostrils flared in effort. “Do you yield?” She asked him, her tone quiet and smooth as silk.

For a moment Rex didn’t answer. He realized he wouldn’t beat her, but she had his blood up and he was angry. Angry that he let her hand him his ass in front of the generals. Angry that she was so damn good. Angry that she wasn’t his to have. Angry that he couldn’t take her hand, stand and kiss her there in front of everyone present. He struggled to get his fury under control, knowing their little audience was watching. He finally took a deep breath and nodded. “I yield.”

Lara immediately stepped back and away from him. She watched Rex move to sit up and then almost as an afterthought, she reached her hand forward to help him up. Rex stared at it for a moment, long enough that everyone present thought he was going to reject her offer. Begrudgingly, Rex took the hand and she got him back to standing. She backed two steps away and bowed to him again, rigidly. He did the same, though this time he couldn’t look at her. He heard her say “Good match, Captain. You’re very good at this.” Rex nodded curtly. He walked over to the weapons rack and put the staff back in its place, and returned to his chair. He was still angry. Everything about her drove him crazy. Her eyes, her graceful movements, her hair, her humor, her musical voice, her smell. She smelled like some kind of flower and spice that he couldn’t name. It was intoxicating.

Lara had followed him with her eyes, aware that she’d pushed him hard in front of everyone. She risked a glance over at the table full of generals and Cody, behind which sat Echo and Fives. Echo was watching Rex guardedly, then his eyes met Lara’s. They were full of a knowledge about his place in her life. Not hurt so much, more resigned. Lara couldn’t help that. She wouldn’t deny she loved Echo and her time with him was fun, rewarding and special. But this thing between herself and Rex - there would have to be a resolution to it, sooner than later. But again, it had to be Rex’s choice. She hoped this Army was worth the cost of what Rex was trying to do, pushing happiness away with both hands.

Kiara, dressed up as Lara Croft, probably due to Rafe Cameron being here. Marilyn as the Pink Power Ranger, which like, kudos to her. Tripp dressed up as a greaser. Briar dressed up as Katinka from Zoolander. Asher dressed up as a pirate and maybe he'll score some booty tonight with that fit. Obie as a ring master which is laughable because we all know who the real ring master in his friend group is. Carter as a scary as scarecrow that makes me want to call Dean and Sam Winchester. Halloween with the Van Der Linde’s - Part Deux

This is part 2 of a Halloween post I did a while back. There are some lame memes of mine that reference part 1 but it’s of course not a necessity to read the first part. If you want to read it - here it is. Arthur - a pilot from Top Gun - he always thought it would be cool to fly and he loved the movie growing up. He thought about becoming a pilot himself as he loved freedom. However, he hated the idea of joining the air force and he didn’t want to be a commercial pilot.

Dutch and Molly - Molly *really* wants to do Bonnie and Clyde. Badly. So badly. Dutch thinks the idea is too basic. He thought about doing Elvis briefly. Finally, Dutch decided on King Henry VIII and Molly as a princess. Henry VIII was known for his romantic notions of courtly gentlemanly love and all things grand.......but is more famous for how his wives ended up and his politics. (No, that’s not commentary on Dutch but I suppose you could make an argument for some minor similarities). Molly’s dress is indeed based on the deleted Ball Gown dress.

Hosea- David Bowie 100%. He loved David Bowie for decades and since people have said he resembled David, he thought, why not?

John - Like every year, he didn’t want to dress up. He finally “forced himself” to choose a Yellowstone employee shirt....which then caused the family to goad him into adding pizass to his costume...which was a jacket and some spurs.

Abigail -Lara Croft, She watched the kids in one of her foster homes played Tomb Raider and she loved it. She always wanted to be like Lara. The only thing she changed was the shorts into longer pants.

Sadie - She saw Pearson and Charles dress up like pirates last year and knew she could do a better job. You bet she’d be the most bad ass pirate queen you’ve ever seen....her epilogue outfit even looks like a pirate’s outfit. 

Charles - A Jedi and he’s comfortable as hell. He was a comfy pirate last year and intends to be comfty again. He almost convinces Arthur to join him, especially since “Jedi fly ships”. Star Wars gave Charles a lot of comfort growing up and he stills enjoys it through the ups an downs. Then Uncle appears....

Uncle -  is a Jedi, too doing bad Obi-Wan Kenobi impressions.......just to follow Charles around and annoy him.

 Sean, Lenny and Javier - the three Spider-Men so they can do the Spider-Men pointing meme....just with three Spider-men! Lenny’s back up was Marty McFly, Sean’s back up was Elton John and Javier’s back up was Legolas. Yes, I FIRMLY believe Javier is a “nerd” in the best of ways. 

Jack - wanted to be involved, but remembered he was spiderman last year and the year before that so now he’s decided he’s Batman. He was not allowed to watch the Robert Pattinson film, but he’s watched the Kevin Conroy original Batman the Animated Series and loved it.

Kieran - One of the classic Riddler styles, baby! He loves that Jack is Batman - the same version he grew up with. He tells lame riddles all night which annoys some of the gang members, but Jack has a ton of fun trying to figure them out.

Josiah Trelawny - lost a bet and did not get to pick his outfit. He was horrified until…….it was the ladies who picked it out. They picked out Dr. Stephen Strange.

Tilly, Karen and Mary-Beth - Charlie’s Angels. Mary-Beth wanted it last year and they didn’t do it so she INISTED this year. Note: I l literally do NOT know ANYTHING about Charlie’s Angels except that Farrah Fawcett was extremely famous because of it. If you know how to match characters to their personalities, go ahead!

Susan Grimshaw - Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. It’s a fun costume with so many different interpretations so she gets to pick what pieces she wants.

Micah - the Joker Heath Ledger version because he likes doing the impressions. He is monitored around Jack. (Oops, didn’t know I had 3 batman characters on here. Sorry, but I think it works!)

Mr. Pearson - Bob’s Burger and people actually like it! 

Reverend Swanson - Gandalf. He has a rivalry with the “Star Wars nerds”, but it’s all in good fun.

Leopold Strauss - doesn’t dress up. He thinks it’s a waste of time. Some of the less festive gang members agree with him. However, he does hand out items like pencils which....is useful at least?

Bill - Freddy Kruger - but does not wear the mask around Jack and his sister. He wants to be able to choose when he’s scary and when he’s not...besides, the Marstons and co would kick his ass. (Jack would probably think it’s cool, though.) (Doing a collage image because watch someone report me for posting a horror costume lol I know people who have been reported for less.)

Rufus -  Jack and Abigail decide Rufus will use his good boyness for good and make up for John’s lack of celebration.

Amelia Marston - My name for Abigail and John’s daughter. Abigail and John want to raise a strong little lady so who better than a feminist icon like Rosie the Riveter? (To those who don’t know, Rosie the Riveter was a World War II propaganda figure who encouraged all women to work outside of the home for the war effort - usually in factories.
