Jeep JK 3.8Lにミッションクラーラーを取り付ける
前期型のJeep Wrangler JKには、3.8Lのエンジンにクライスラー製4速オートマ (42RLE)が搭載されています。この42RLEミッションは、起伏の激しい山道や砂漠などのオフロードでの使用時に度々オーバーヒートすることが知られた悪名高きミッションでもあります。トランスミッションの最大の敵は温度であり、42RLEはミッションオイルが115C (240F)を超えるとオーバーヒート (HOTOIL警告が出る)し、2速以上に変速しないLimp modeになる。以前、傾斜のきつい山道のオフロードを4HIで走行中、HOTOILが出てしまったことがあり、早く冷却系を解決しなければと思っていました。これにはいくつかの原因があり、一つは35インチのMTタイヤに対してディファレンシャルのギア比が3.73と低く、最低でも4.11あるいは4.88のギアに交換するのが必要とされています。ただre-gearにはショップに頼むと$2,500ちかくかかってしまうので、なかなか踏み切れずにいます。前後のアクスルを下ろす必要があり、DIYで簡単にできる改造ではないです。
問題はラジエーターを通るミッションオイルが十分に冷却されないことであるため、今回はひとまずミッションクーラーを追加でインストールすることにします。ウェブ上には以下のようにたくさんの記事があるので、これらがとても参考になりました。DIYでとにかく工夫して改造していくカルチャーです。日曜日の午後に行うプロジェクトしては最高ですね。途中、足りないパーツを買いにいったりしましたが、3時間くらいかかりました。
この作業に取り掛かる前に、できれば普段の運転中にミッションオイルの温度を軽く記録しておくと良いです。これによって、インストール後の効果を比較できるようになります。Jeep Wrangler JKにはミッションオイルのゲージがないので、Bluetooth機能付きのOBD-2ポートに刺さるスキャナーを買っておくと便利です。ケータイからクルマのセンサーの情報を様々に読み出す事ができます。OBD JScanというアンドロイドアプリを使っています。
アイディアとしては、ラジエーターを通って冷却されたミッションオイルのライン (Return line)とトランスミッションの間にミッションクーラーを追加でインストールすることで、ミッションオイルがミッションに戻る前に、更に冷却するというものです。B&Mから出ている以下のクーラーをAmazonで購入しました。

全体像
上がオリジナルで、ミッションから出た熱いオイルはラジエーターで冷やされてreturn lineから戻ります。今回はクーラー(青い四角)をその間に取り付けることによって、冷却機能の向上を図ります。
フロントグリルの取り外し ラジエーターの上部に6個くらいプラスチックのリベットがあり、これでグリルが固定されているので外します。また、下部のクリップを外す際には左右のウィンカーのライトも外しておきます。これでグリルが外れます。
クーラーの取り付け B&M Super Coolerは様々なクルマにインストールできるようなユニバーサルなデザインなので、Jeepへの取り付けにはフロントグリルを外し、コンデンサーの下にあるボディフレーム(Swaybarの真上)に電動ドリルで穴をあけ、付属のL字ブラケットが取り付けられるようにしました。固定にはM10ボルトを使用し、適当な位置で固定。クーラーの取り付け位置は、前からみて右側あるいは上部にクーラーのホースの取り付けがくるようにすることで、最も効率的な冷却が期待できるようです(下向きはNG)。クーラーの上部のブラケットは、フレームにある穴がそのまま使えたので、ドリルは必要ないかと思います。この部分に試行錯誤し、一番時間がかかりました。
ホースの取り回しと取り付け 付属する3/8インチのトランスミッションホースを取り付け、これをラジエーターファンの後ろ側まで持ってきます。ラジエーターの隙間から十分に取り回せると思います。ところが付属のホースは微妙に短く、近くのホームセンターでホースを買いに行く羽目になりました。また、付属してこなかった3/8" Barb Fittingsも2つ必要です。これは予めAmazon頼んでおきました。Barb Fittingsは、ホースとホースをつなぐ金具で、新しいクーラーのホースを既存のホースに接続するときに使うものです。日本語だとホース用継手というのでしょうか?
次にReturn lineを同定し、適当なところをカッターで切断します。このときにミッションオイルが少々漏れるので、下になにか敷いておいたほうがいいかもしれません。このReturn lineにクラーラーのホースを接続し、クランプで固定しておきます。Return lineは、クルマを上から見たときに2本あるラインのうち、上部を指します。これがトランスミッションへと流れていきます。不安な場合は、下に潜り込んで、ラインをラジエーターに向かって目で追いかけていくと確実です。Barb Fittingsをホースに取り付けるとき、予めミッションオイルを塗っておくと、スムーズに奥まで入ると思います。
エンジンをかけ、クランプでつなぎ留めたホース周りからATFオイルの漏れがないことを確認します。ATF+4を必ず使用します。ホースを切った時およびクーラーにオイルが循環する分のミッションオイルを少し追加します。ゲージでオイル量を確認します。
ミッションオイルの監視 通勤に毎日15kmくらい下道を走っているのですが、このときおおよそミッション温度は80Cから85C近くまで上がっていました。また上りの岩場などを4LOで山登りしていると95Cから100C近くまで温度が上がってしまうことがありました。インストール後、街乗りでは60C前後を維持しており、70C以上に上がることはほとんど無くなりました。効果は絶大です。引き続き、長時間の高速運転とオフロードでの温度変化に気を配りながら、監視してみようと思っています。
