New video alert!! Cast 13 has a full show, y’all!!!
youtube
(Not sure why the uploader went with a Warsaw promo pic for the thumbnail, but I promise the video is what it says it is. Also, the videographer was evidently not very secretive about their filming, so expect more kitties spiking the camera than normal.)

I recently completed a commission for Logan Mortier, who played Munkustrap in the Cast 13 of Oasis of the Seas ٩( ᐛ )و!!! He wanted a piece that would capture the relationship he shared on stage with his fiancé, Lewis Rimmel who played Macavity! What an honour to be given the opportunity to work on this! I was very excited and I had a lot of fun working on this commission 🥰 Thank you so much to Logan!!

Carry On Countdown Day 13 - Lyrics
For this year's COC I've decided to put together daily fic rec lists! Let me know if you find any new favorite reads from these <3
For todays prompt I've gone with fics that prominently feature music and lyrics
All I Ever Wanted was the World by @facewithoutheart
Rated E, 30,152 words
Simon finds himself at the Wank of England, Vauxhall’s infamous gay pub. Ruled by drag queen Baz Pitch aka Tyra Fangs, and staffed by lovable queer misfits, many lost souls have found themselves within its dark walls. But Simon’s not just another lost soul, and Baz is more than the sparkling gowns he wears as armour, and together they may build something better than a place to grab a pint.
Only Creatures by @emeryhall
Rated E, 88,073 words
After Simon dumps Baz in the San Diego airport, Baz tries to be normal about it. He finishes up at LSE, gets an MSt in poetry from Oxford, dates a few men, fucks around. Then he gives up and retires to the Scottish Highlands to cultivate his “Rick Rubin beard” and “Unabomber vibe.” Everything is going just bloody brilliant. That is until Fiona shows up with some unexpected news. Oh yeah, and a porno mag featuring his ex wearing nothing but wings and a tail.
Ride 'Em Cowboy by @wolfywordweaver
Rated M, 9,673 words
Before going on a months long trip to the Midwest with his father for business, Baz is dragged to a strip club on a Cowboy Themed night for one last hurrah by his friends Dev and Niall. It just happens that at the club he meets Simon Snow, a stripper that shakes his world and makes him want things that he think he can't have. Except, maybe Simon wants those things too.
Across the Universe by @sillyunicorn
Rated T, 8,815 words
School has started, but where is Baz? And where did this cat come from? Simon searches for his missing roommate, learns to love the Beatles, and finds comfort in his new furry friend. And maybe, just maybe, what he’s been looking for has been here all along.
Take On Me by @basic-banshee
Rated T, 49,589 words
Baz Pitch is an overworked uni student who -- between his heavy course load and his shifts at his aunt's bookstore -- is stressed all the time. There are expectations on him to follow the family footsteps, and he doesn't want to deal with that right now. His aunt Fiona's bookstore is his one oasis in this (except for on poetry slam nights) and he's glad to have her -- even if she does come with her own brand of crazy. But when Simon Snow, a lit student with a short temper who's trying to distance himself from his bad history, starts working at the bookstore, Baz's life gets infinitely more stressful. Amidst bad poetry slams, author signings, getting locked in storerooms and gaining a (unwanted) roommate, Baz comes to realise that Simon Snow is so much more than he's prepared to take on.
✨Gratuitous self rec✨
In Just Seven Days (And Six Long Nights) I Can Make You a Manahhahaan! by me! @skeedelvee
Rated T, 30,109 words
Reccing this one again because I messed up and forgot I was saving it for this day's prompt before
The Popped Cherry shadow cast is in dire need of a Rocky. Simon Snow has a week to prepare for the role. The person enlisted to help bring him up to snuff? None other than the show's star (and Simon's roommate), Baz Pitch.
If you have any recs that fit the prompt that I've missed, feel free to leave them in the comments! There's plenty of gaps in my reading so there's a good chance I may not have read it
Also I've had a hard time finding if some people are here on Tumblr, so if you know someone who hasn't been tagged, feel free to leave that in the comments as well <3

The Temptation Game - (Chapter 13)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter Title: A Decade Later Warning for Readers This chapter contains themes of emotional distress, introspection, and reflections on past relationships. Summary Ten years after parting ways with Jungkook, Y/N stands at the pinnacle of her career as the CEO of Opal Oasis, recognized as the Best Businesswoman of the Year. Despite her accomplishments, memories of Jungkook and the love they shared haunt her, leaving her questioning whether achieving her dreams was worth the cost of losing him. Word Count : 1,136 words
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Days, months, and even years rolled on, like sand slipping through an hourglass, each grain representing moments of laughter, tears, and growth. Ten years had passed since Y/N and Jungkook had parted ways, their hearts still intertwined in the echoes of memories, but their paths had diverged, leading them to new destinies.
"10 years later..."
The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation in a grand hall filled with the most influential businesswomen and men in the city. Luxurious chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting a warm glow over the elegantly dressed attendees. The stage was set, and the air was thick with excitement as the Master of Ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC's voice echoed through the venue, drawing every eye toward the stage. "Tonight, we celebrate excellence, resilience, and ambition. The award for Best Businesswoman of the Year goes to an individual who has redefined success in her field and has inspired many with her unwavering spirit."
The audience held their breath as the anticipation grew. Y/N felt a flutter of nerves in her stomach, but she pushed it down, reminding herself of all the hard work she had put in to reach this moment.
"And the award goes to... Ms. Y/N, the CEO of Opal Oasis, a chain of restaurants and hotels!"
Applause erupted in the room, a cacophony of clapping hands and joyous cheers. A mix of pride and humility washed over Y/N as she stood up, her heart racing. She took a moment to breathe, gathering her thoughts and steadying her nerves.
With a stunning beauty that radiated confidence and a powerful aura that demanded attention, Y/N stepped onto the stage. Each step echoed the sacrifices she had made, the late nights spent working, the moments of doubt that had threatened to consume her. She remembered the pain of leaving Jungkook behind, the love that had once filled her heart but now transformed into a bittersweet memory.
As she reached the podium, the audience's cheers faded into a distant hum. Y/N looked out at the sea of faces, each one representing a different story, a different struggle. She had come so far, not just for herself, but for her family and the dreams they had nurtured together. This moment was not just hers; it belonged to them too.
With a small tear prickling at the corner of her eye, she subtly blinked it away, determined to maintain her composure. Y/N took the award, the trophy gleaming under the lights, a testament to her hard work and perseverance.
“Thank you,” she began, her voice steady but filled with emotion. “This award represents not just my journey, but the journeys of all those who strive for their dreams against all odds. Every challenge I faced only strengthened my resolve to succeed, to create opportunities, and to uplift my family.”
As she spoke, memories of her past washed over her—the struggles, the nights she spent alone, the moments of self-doubt, and the sacrifices made along the way. With each word, she honored the past, recognizing how far she had come.
“I owe this to my family, who believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. And to everyone who has supported me, thank you for being part of this journey. I hope to inspire others to chase their dreams relentlessly.”
The crowd erupted into applause once more, but Y/N’s thoughts momentarily drifted back to Jungkook. She wondered where he was now, what he had become. The ache of their past still lingered, a reminder of a love that had shaped her, but she had forged her path, one built on determination and resilience.
As she stepped back from the podium, a mixture of triumph and nostalgia washed over her. She had become a woman of strength, a leader in her own right, yet she couldn’t shake the feeling that something—or someone—was still missing from her life.
The applause faded, and as she turned to leave the stage, she couldn’t help but glance over her shoulder, half-hoping to see a familiar face in the crowd.
As Y/N settled into the backseat of the car, the engine purred to life, and they began their journey home. The city lights blurred by as they sped through the streets, but her gaze remained fixed on the grand facades of her restaurants, each one a testament to her relentless ambition and hard work. The Opal Oasis chain glimmered under the night sky, a beacon of success that she had poured her heart and soul into.
But despite the sparkling exterior, a heavy weight rested in her chest. As she watched the magnificent structures pass by, a small tear rolled down her cheek, trailing down her face like a silent acknowledgment of the sacrifices made along the way. She had envisioned this moment—standing at the pinnacle of her career, recognized as a leader in her field. Yet, here she was, questioning everything.
The journey had been arduous, filled with sleepless nights, endless meetings, and moments of doubt that gnawed at her spirit. Each step toward success had come at a cost. The fruit of her labor should have yielded peace and fulfillment, but instead, she felt an emptiness that resonated deep within her.
"Why?" she whispered to herself, her heart aching with unspoken questions. "Why does it feel like something is missing?"
The success that had once felt like a distant dream now sat heavily in her lap, yet it failed to fill the void that lingered. She had chased this ambition with fervor, driven by a desire to uplift her family and create a life far removed from the struggles of her past. But even with all the accolades and accomplishments, her heart felt strangely barren.
Thoughts of Jungkook crept into her mind, uninvited yet persistent. She remembered the laughter they shared, the way his smile could light up her darkest days. In the whirlwind of her career, she had buried those feelings deep, convincing herself that her path was clear and that love was a distraction she couldn’t afford. Yet now, as she sat in the plush comfort of the car, she couldn’t shake the nagging sensation that love—his love—had been the missing piece all along.
"Is this what I wanted?" she pondered, staring out the window as the world blurred past. "To achieve everything but lose the person who mattered most?"
The question lingered in the air, heavy with emotion. She remembered their last conversation, his words echoing in her mind: "From this moment, I won't come in front of you." The finality of his departure had cut deep, leaving a wound that had yet to heal.
Each success she celebrated felt tainted by the absence of Jungkook, a bittersweet reminder of what she had chosen to sacrifice. Despite the accolades and recognition, she found herself longing for something morea connection, a love, a sense of belonging that had eluded her.
As they approached her home, she felt a knot tighten in her stomach. It was a beautiful house, a symbol of her hard-earned success, but it felt hollow without the warmth of laughter and the presence of someone who understood her deepest fears and dreams.
The car rolled to a stop, and Y/N took a deep breath, wiping the tears from her cheeks. She stepped out, the chill of the night air biting against her skin. Each step toward the door felt heavy, laden with the weight of her thoughts.
Inside, the quiet was deafening. She closed the door behind her, enveloped in silence that echoed through the spacious rooms. Y/N stood in the dim light, staring into the distance, wondering if she could ever find peace in her accomplishments.
Even with all the success, my heart is still empty.
She whispered the thought to the darkness, wishing for an answer, for a sign that the path she had chosen was the right one. But the only response was the steady ticking of the clock, a reminder that time continued to pass, even as she grappled with the emptiness within.
To be continued....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could she ever find her way back to the love she had lost? Was there still a chance for happiness beyond the shadows of ambition?
The journey ahead remained uncertain, but one thing was clear: her heart was still searching for something—someone—to fill the void.
Will her emptiness get filled? or is it too late?

Dark Shadows was an American gothic soap opera that aired weekdays on the ABC television network, from June 27, 1966, to April 2, 1971. The show depicted the lives of the wealthy Collins family of Collinsport, Maine, where a series of supernatural occurrences take place.
Dark Shadows became popular when vampire Barnabas Collins played by actor Jonathan Frid was introduced ten months into its run. It would also feature ghosts, werewolves, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel, and a parallel universe. A small troupe of actors each played many roles; as actors came and went, some characters were played by more than one actor. The show was distinguished by its melodramatic performances, atmospheric set designs, unusual storylines, numerous plot twists, adventurous music score, broad range of characters, and heroic adventures. Dark Shadows developed a large teenage audience and a dedicated cult following. By 1969, it had become ABC’s highest-rated daytime series with viewership in the millions!
The original network run of the show amassed 1,225 episodes. The success of the series spawned a media franchise that has included two feature films (House of Dark Shadows in 1970 and Night of Dark Shadows in 1971), a 1991 TV remake, a 2012 film reboot directed by Tim Burton, and numerous spin-off novels and comics. Kathryn Leigh Scott has narrated all 27 vintage Dark Shadows novels by Marilyn Ross for Oasis Audiobooks, available on Amazon.com.

Dramas for the first half of 2023
Now that we are six months into 2023, time to do one of these posts. I am gonna include both Korean and Chinese dramas, because why not and any drama I even checked out is on it.
DRAMAS WATCHED
29. Romance of Twin Flower (China) - make it cease existing! My favorite het web novel got murdered and then had its grave spat on.
28. Dominator of Martial Gods (China) - if MST3K still existed, this drama would be prime material for it.
27. Wanru’s Journey (China) - acting. Try it!
26. Royal Rumors (China) - they tried acting. But forgot to try having a functional screenplay on top.
25. The Last Princess (China) - acting is nonexistent and the story is trash but it never aspired to be what it wasn’t and was kinda cute.
24. Oasis (Korea) - great acting in a story with a screenplay that goes round and round fruitlessly like a hamster in a cage.
23. The Trust (China) - the OTP in this one swaps bodies but it would have been better for everyone if whoever made this and an actual competent writer swapped theirs.
22. Snow Eagle Lord (China) - yet another drama in which Xu Kai does his best to keep acting opposite a wooden costar and through a terrible screenplay. There is something seriously wrong with that man’s career choices.
21. Heartbeat (Korea) - the good: it’s harmless. The bad: it’s harmless.
20. Back from the Brink (China) - ummm the people are pretty? And if I were 10 I’d be all about this show but as is...
19. Joseon Attorney (Korea) - slightly less fun than reading a legal treatise.
18. The Starry Love (China) - the definition of a xianxia playing it safe and pastel; I did love the secondary couple a lot but it was not enough to save that snoozefest of a drama.
17. Chong Zi (China) - badly acted and a screenplay that somehow manages to be both repetitive and disjointed. But I am a sucker for the shizunfucker trope so here we are.
16. Island (Korea) - a mess but Kim Nam Gil is hot with a sword.
15. Circle of Love (China) - rationally, a hot mess. But so entertaining and addicting and fall of make outs of epicness!
14. Lady Durian (Korea) - makjang from the Queen of Makjang and with that scrumptious cast! This is gonna be GOOD!
13. The Forbidden Marriage (Korea) - sweet and oddly charming despite nobody in it bothering to act much.
12. Pledge of Allegiance (China) - the way they had to edit it likely due to censorship made it less than it what could have been but still more than most dramas this year.
11. Choice Husband (China) - delicious cliches and tropes and angst in the rain!
10. Hidden Love (China) - to make ME of all people to care about a fluffy modern is a bona fide miracle but the two mains are chemistry machines who portray longing so well.
9. Gone with the Rain (China) - wildly uneven but our heroine and the sexy general she eventually chooses are pure gold!
8. The Secret Romantic Guest House (Korea) - how to do youth sageuk right. Everything about this just works!
7. Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow (Korea) - it has flaws but is so gorgeous and full of longing and grief and everything good!
6. Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (Korea) - a sequel/prequel that is almost as good as the original, how often does that happen?
5. See You In My 19th Life (Korea) - wacky and grieving, delicate and odd, this is everything I ever want in a kdrama.
4. Call It Love (Korea) - a truly exquisite story of trauma and loneliness and healing and love.
3. Till the End of the Moon (China) - gloriously messy in every way this is just MORE. The ending is enraging and there are issues but when it hits, it hits so hard the rest of it does not matter - the dark characters, the dysfunctional love story, the battles, the insane visuals, the EVERYTHING of it. This is what fantasy should be like.
2. Chang Feng Du/Destined (China) - came out of nowhere to own my heart via its story of growing up and finding love and slow organic relationship building and keeping your soul in a world of horrors.
1. The Ingenuous One (China) - the best one, so I am gonna talk about it below.
FAVORITE DRAMA
The Ingenuous One - so impossibly solid, from acting to visuals to screenplay to EVERYTHING! Adult characters with adult issues and choices, both moral dilemmas and battles equally compelling. The love stories, the friendships, the shades of grey. This is utterly and completely adult.
WORST DRAMA
Romance of the Twin Flower - if I could make one drama cease to exist, this would be it.
FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER
Tantai Jin, Till The End of the Moon - the best character this year hands down - by turns (and timelines) unhinged monster, a contained saint, a victim of abuse trying to attain being viewed as human, a schemer, a ruler, grief personified, curiosity and monstrosity and nobility all mingled.
Runner up: Jang Uk, Alchemy of Souls - sunshine boy gone dark and grieving, but still with that same core of steel.
FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER
Shim Woo Joo, Call It Love - she’s damaged and impulsive and relationship-phobic and revenge driven and glorious!
Runner Up: Shu Ya Nan (The Ingenuous One) - allowed to be tough and dark and with her own agenda and not a member of a good sect and just so cool.
NEEDS TO BE MURDERED
Han Dong Jin’s Mom, Call It Love - that woman was horrifying and the source of so much of his trauma; a real realistic monster petty in all ways except for the damage she inflicted.
FAVORITE SHIP
Gu Jiusi/Liu Yuru, Chang Feng Du - wholesome and helping each other grow and talking it out but also there is blood feeding and midnight rescues and everything. They are good but not in the least boring.
Runner Up: Woo Joo/Dong Jin, Call It Love - two wounded souls finding such slow but such amazing healing with each other.
FAVORITE SECONDARY OTP
Su Ming Yu/Ke Menglan, The Ingenuous One - there’s actually been a lot of good secondary OTPs this year (General x Fox in TTEOTM, Investigator x Princess, TIO, Rang/Mermaid, TOTNT1938) but these two owned my heart - gentleman merchant x gambling hostess ftw.
NOTP
Romance of Twin Flower - they took my favorite het novel OTP, smart and coldblooded and forces of nature and turned them into THAT?
SHIRTLESSNESS AWARD
Xiao Hong Ye, Circle of Love - guy was a terrible abuser but those pecs were the real sin!
CRAZIEST FUNFEST
Circle of Love - screenplay written by rabid monkeys and populated by a bunch of psychos but such ridiculous, irresistible fun!
FAVORITE SCENE
Tantai Jin confronting Li Susu in jail, Till the End of the Moon - the energy, the intensity, the darkness the EVERYTHING.
BIGGEST CRUSH
Li Gong Quan, The Ingenuous One - yeah whatever, I realize he’s a minor character but I loved him so much! The whole having to bring down your benefactor who’s gone evil tho you are in love with his daughter should have been a whole other drama!
BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER
Chen Wende, Gone with the Rain - most of this drama is not that exciting but whenever his King of Trolls hot general shows up, I sit up and pay attention. I am 35 eps deep because of him.
NEEDS A SEQUEL
The Ingenuous One - I am dying to see what happens to royal investigator and supposedly dead princess, how our OTP will travel the world, the merchant and his lady, Ten Taels and his orphans and his girl and just everything. I loved these people so!
NEEDS A DIRECTOR’S CUT
Till the End of the Moon - it was clear they cut a BUNCH in the last third to fit the ridiculous new “40 eps or bust” rule and it would flow so much more smoothly if it was allowed to breathe.
NEEDS SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
Romance of Twin Flower - it should have been shredded into nonexistence sorry not sorry.
TOO MANY SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
Pledge of Allegiance - this drama was good but had gaping lacunae where too many scissors were taken to it for censorship reasons; I am surprised even what’s left was allowed to air tbh but still...
TROPE THAT NEEDS TO DIE
Shrill = cute - I see it every year, I hate it every year.
FAVORITE TROPE WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF
Hot Men Whump - come one, TTEOTM alone would fill the quota but we also had CFD, Call It Love, See You in my 19th life etc etc.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Back from the Brink - it’s based on a novel by an author whose other novels (Zhao Yao, Blue Whispers, Mulberry Song) I adore and the novelist was the screenwriter so I was so excited. But it was a juvenile, flat mess that de-powered the heroine and taught me that yeah, sometimes the writer should not adopt their work.
BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE
Chang Feng Du - I loved the novel but the trailers were a fluffy bland disaster and I checked it out with zero expectations. However, this is a glorious adaptation, a lesson in how to transport a massive novel on screen into slim 40 eps and to account for changes in medium and stricter censorship restrictions for dramas versus books while keeping the essential vibe of the original.
BEST NON-2023 DRAMA I’VE WATCHED IN 2023
The Imperial Doctress (China) - the pining the pining by the Hot Emperor! This is like all my web novel dreams come true!
MOST ANTICIPATED
A Journey to Love/Prisoner of Beauty/My Journey to You/Kunning Palace - maybe one of them will air before the world ends.

Helen Norville, Tim Ahern and Dale Jennings, tearing up the streets of Darwin! ❤️
.
.
The settings of A White Marquis Matinee Jacket were visually gorgeous. The streetscapes of suburbia, old school motels and glimmering pools, the sprawling dusty outside of Berrimah Prison, and also the stunning clearing in which Helen and Dale had their date in.

But did you know that this part of the episode wasn’t filmed in Darwin itself? Filmed around March 2021, The Newsreader’s makers found themselves a victim of the state border closures of the COVID pandemic. Northern Territory had closed their borders to Victoria, meaning the makers had to source a local state alternative to bring 1986 Darwin to life. Frustratingly, they had flights to Darwin booked already, and Anna Torv had even booked a crocodile cruise for the cast and crew; revealed in a 2021 episode of the TV Reload podcast.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/10247311db3d83649a1cb9ef91c97a84/b65ac022f67e89e0-93/s540x810/e119dce5b4395b01628b409e329a541ad7371918.jpg)
It’s then that they settled on Mildura; a city in northwestern Victoria. As an ABC article stated, its tranquil, oasis-like streets proved the perfect location to transform into Australia’s northernmost capital city, and so the creative crews had a lot to play with. It was more deserty than tropical, so any place with a palm tree was used, and the film makers were so careful in framing shots.

The good people of Mildura also proved to be very useful. Not only did they provide their homes, businesses and vintage cars to dress the set, a whole group of locals were also employed as extras (with exception of Michael himself), playing members of the press crew that are in the background of our scenes with Helen, Dale, Tim and Ross. Reading the article aforementioned, they were so proud to play a part in making the show.

Let’s all take a moment to admire these shots taken by the ABC and Michael Lucas’ husband Adrian Chiarella, and to say a big thank you to the good people and places of Mildura for bringing this wonderful episode to life! We would not have had A White Marquis Matinee Jacket without them! ❤️🌞🎥🕶

Awhile back, @berkiesims asked if I would provide a post on the way I played my legendary legacy save. For the above generations I followed the rules from both original challenges The History Challenge and The Decades Challenge. However, I added death percentages based on real life events and diseases during each time period. I searched the % of deaths for let's say the black death and would come up with a % it would affect my sims that reflected that. Then randomized who would die in my save file from said death. And paired it with this Historical Disease mod. Once generation 19 heir was a young adult, I saved them to my gallery and started a new save file with them to begin a lepacy play through utilizing James Turner's Pack Disabler Tool.

by James Russell Miller
The Giving of Manna (Exodus 16, Numbers 11)
The people of Israel had now entered upon their forty years of discipline. Daring this period they were to be made into a nation. This wider purpose should be kept in mind in all our studies of the incidents of the wandering in the wilderness. The people were to be trained to trust God and to obey Him.
The first experience recorded was at MARAH. There, in great thirst, after three days of desert journey, they came upon springs to which they eagerly rushed, only to find the water bitter, unfit to drink. A tree growing close by was cut down and cast into the waters, at once sweetening them. Thus a lesson in trust was taught God was leading them and He would not fail to provide for their needs.
Often in life, God’s children come to bitter springs. What promised to be experiences of refreshing, prove to be disappointing. Human lives have many sorrows. But always close by the bitter spring grows the tree which will sweeten it. Many interpret the tree of Marah to mean the cross of Christ. The gospel has comfort for all in any trouble. Dr. Fairbairn speaks of the words of Christ as a handful of spices cast into the world’s bitter streams and sweetening them.
After leaving Marah, the people journeyed to ELIM, where they found an oasis with twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. Life is not all disappointment and bitterness. Troubles pass away. Joy comes after sorrow.
Moving farther into the inhospitable wilderness, the people soon found themselves needing bread. They had already forgotten the lesson of Marah the kindness of God in providing for their needs and began to murmur! Again God’s answer to their ungrateful complaining was love a new mercy. “I will rain bread from heaven for you.”
“In the morning there was a layer of dew all around the camp. When the layer of dew evaporated, there on the desert surface were fine flakes, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they asked one another, ‘What is it?’ because they didn’t know what it was. Moses told them, ‘It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.’” Exodus 16:13-15
MANNA was a substance which fell with the dew. For forty years, manna was rained about the camps of the Hebrews, until they reached Canaan and had the natural products of the fields for food. It fell in small grains, like white frost flakes; and in taste like thin flour-cakes with honey. It was gathered every morning, except on the Sabbath, and in place of this a double portion fell on Friday morning. If kept over-night, it became corrupt except on the Sabbath. Manna was the principal part of the food of the people all the forty years. As a perpetual memorial of this miracle, a golden pot of it was laid up in the ark.
God always has some way to provide for the needs of His people. He is not limited to ordinary means. He never works needless miracles. He did not send manna while the people were in Goshen, because there was no need for it then. But here in the wilderness, where food could not be gotten in any ordinary way, He supplied it supernaturally .
“Yes,” someone says, “ that was the age of miracles but we cannot expect God to provide for us in these days as He did then for Israel.” The answer is that God’s love is just as watchful and as faithful now as it was in the days of miracles. We may always with perfect confidence depend on our Father to provide for us in some way when we are following His guidance. Indeed, it is God who feeds us every day just as really as it was God who gave the people the manna each morning. We do not call it a miracle when our daily morning meal is spread for us yet it is no less God who gives it to us than if a separate miracle were wrought each morning to feed us.
‘Give us this day our dally bread.’ Back of the loaf is the snowy flour, And back of the flour the mill; And back of the mill is the wheat, and the shower , And the sun, and the Father’s will.
Something was given to the people to do even when the bread was supplied supernaturally. “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day.” Exodus 16:4
They were not to lay up in store but were taught to live simply by the day. When night came, they did not have a supply of food left over for the next day but were entirely dependent upon God’s new supply to come in the morning.
In this method of providing, God was teaching all future generations a lesson. When the Master gave the disciples the Lord’s Prayer, He put this same thought of life into it, for He taught us to say: “Give us this day our daily bread.”
This is a most valuable lesson for every Christian to learn. We should make a little fence of trust around each day, and never allow any care or any anxiety to break in. God does not provide in advance for our needs. We cannot get grace today for tomorrow’s duties; and if we try to bear tomorrow’s cares and burdens today we shall break down in the attempt.
TIME comes to us, not in years, not even in weeks but in little days. We have nothing to do with ‘life in the aggregate’ that great bulk of duties, anxieties, struggles, trials and needs, which belong to a year or even to a month. We really have nothing to do even with tomorrow.
Our sole business is with the one little day now passing, and the one day’s burdens will never crush us; we can easily carry them until the sun goes down. We can always get along for one short day and that is really, all we ever have.
The Divine purpose in all this experience comes out here, “In this way I will test them, to see whether or not they will follow My instructions.” God is always testing us. Trials test us whether or not we will submit with humility and obedience to the experiences that are sore and painful. Life’s needs test us whether we will trust God in the time of extremity or not.
None the less, do the gifts and favors of God test us. They test our gratitude. Joy tests us as well as sorrow. Some people forget God, when all things go well and they have only prosperity. Do we remember God always as the Giver of each new blessing? Are we grateful to Him for all that we receive? These favors also test our faith. Do we still lean on Him while we have plenty? Ofttimes one who turns to God when help is needed fails to look to Him when the hand is full. The Divine mercies also test our obedience. Do we obey God as carefully and follow Him as closely and trustingly, when our tables are full as when the pressure of poverty or need drives us to Him? Every day is a probation for us.
In the midst of this great mercy of manna, God taught the people to remember the Sabbath. On the sixth day they were to gather and prepare twice as much food as on other days. The reason was that on the Sabbath no work was allowed. No manna fell on that day. There are several interesting things to notice here. While on other days, any manna stored up would rot; the extra day’s portion gathered on the sixth day remained fresh and pure for use on the Sabbath. Still further, on the morning of the Sabbath, no manna fell as on other days. Thus God taught the sacredness of His own day .
He teaches us also here that in order to keep the day as it ought to be kept, we should prepare for it the day before. The people were to gather the Sabbath’s portion on the sixth day. There would seem to be in this provision and preparation in advance, a suggestion of the way we may best observe our Christian Sabbath. Some of us remember certain old-fashioned times in the country, when on Saturday evening careful preparations were made for the Sabbath, so that there would be no needless work done on the Lord’s Day. Wood was cut and carried in, all the implements of worldly labor were put away, boots and shoes were cleaned and blackened, coffee was ground and food cooked, so far as possible in a word, everything was done that could be done beforehand to insure the most restful Sabbath possible. This old-fashioned custom is a good one to keep in vogue always. Very much of Sabbath enjoyment and profit, will always depend upon the measure of preparation we make for it in advance.
The Lord spoke of this manna miracle as an exhibition of His glory. “At evening, then you shall know that the Lord has brought you out from the land of Egypt; and in the morning, then you shall see the glory of the Lord!” The supply of food was an exhibition of God’s glory. We may see the same glory in every evening’s and morning’s blessings, which a thoughtful Providence brings to us. We think only of the unusual, or the supernatural, as manifesting the glory of God. We forget that this Divine glory is shown just as really and as wonderfully in every day’s new blessings. The miracle of God’s daily Providence is infinitely more stupendous, than the feeding of a prophet for a few months from an inexhaustible handful of meal; the feeding of five thousand in Galilee with a few loaves and fishes; or even the feeding of a nation with manna for forty years. If the single special miracle shows glory, what does the great continuous miracle of each day’s common blessings, year after year, and century after century, show?
Let us learn to see the glory of God in every piece of bread which comes to our table, in every drop of water which glistens on a leaf in the morning sun, in every blade of grass and bursting bud and blooming flower in field or garden.
One special lesson that God wished the people to learn was trust. So He rebuked their complainings and murmurings when they found fault, and became afraid when they had hardships to meet. “The Lord hears your murmurings which you murmur against Him!” Exodus 16:8. This is startling! Does God really hear every discontented word we speak? Does He hear when we grumble about the weather, about the hard winter, about the late spring, about the dry summer, about the wet harvest? Does He hear when we fret and murmur about the drought, about the high winds, about the storms? Does He hear when we complain about our circumstances, about the hardness of our lot, about our losses and disappointments?
If we could get into our hearts and keep there continually, the consciousness that every word we speak is heard in heaven, and falls upon God’s ears before it falls upon any other ear would we murmur as we now do? We are always on our guard when we think anyone we love and honor is within hearing, and speak only proper words then. Are we as careful what we say in the hearing of our Father? We are careful, too, never to speak words which would give pain to the hearts of those we love dearly. Are we as careful not to say anything that will give pain to Christ?
There are many interesting points of analogy, between the manna and Christ.
The manna is called “bread from heaven.” “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever!” John 6:51
The manna was indispensable without it the people would have perished. Without Christ our souls must perish.
The manna was a free gift from God there was nothing to pay for it. Christ is God’s gift, coming to us without money and without price.
Yet the manna had to be gathered by the people, Christ must be received and appropriated by personal faith. “Take, eat,” runs the formula of the holy communion. The bread is offered to us but we must take it and we must eat it. So must we take Christ when He is offered to us.
The manna came in great abundance, enough for all. Just so, there is such abundance in Christ that He can supply all the needs of my soul, and of every soul who will feed upon Him. No one ever came hungry to Him and found no bread.
Manna had to be gathered each day, a supply for that one day. We must feed upon Christ daily. We cannot lay up supplies of grace for any future. We cannot feed tomorrow, on today’s bread.
The manna had to be gathered early, before the heat of the sun melted it. We should seek the blessings of Christ’s grace in life’s early morning before the hot suns of care and trial beat upon us.
