Origin #3 thoughts 👇

The family dynamics of the Zabis are always fascinating to witness. You could probably infer that line of thinking from just the show itself, but it's interesting to see Degwin talk about his loss of determination from Garma's death here.

I get to collect yet another instance of weather control being a thing on the Sides in this volume.

After all these months, I finally got to see this moment of Bright being like the only person in the present who talks about Zeon Zum Deikun's assassination that I thought I had just misremembered being in the movies...and then I rewatched the first movie where it wasn't present either, so I got really confused. But no, I had just picked this Origin bit some time in the past on accident. Sayla getting her own separate panel reacting to his outburst is some excellent foreshadowing as well.

As always, I appreciate that this manga gives some more depth to storylines that weren't as developed in the original show. I never really considered Char facing more consequences for allegedly killing Garma than just being sent off for an indeterminate amount of time.

I also appreciate the extra scenes between Ramba Ral and Hamon that are in this that showcase their relationship more as well.

On the other hand, sometimes plot points get cut out that I feel take away the depth of the story. I can understand why the Adzam and M'Quve mine attack were removed because Kycilia and M'Quve both have more separate and specific roles now, but I feel like Amuro still needed a reckless event with consequences like destroying that mine putting White Base in danger did (on top of meeting Ramba Ral). I shouldn't try to compare the storylines of the Origin and the original show/movies too closely though, since they're all separate things.

(Side note: I wonder who's job it is to clean the big front windows White Base considering they're probably covered in handprints from people doing this kind of thing all the time...)

Speaking of that Ramba Ral encounter, the scene where he finds Amuro's gun always felt a little creepy, but the Origin's take on it just made my skin crawl...

Sayla being accused of being a Zeon spy is an interesting new twist, though I'm a bit disappointed her commandeering the Gundam was removed from the story. Also, I thought that Cozun constantly sexually harassing Sayla when she secretly met with him for information was an unnecessary addition 👎

Usually, the new side character White Base officers slide right off my brain as soon as they leave the page, but I really like this lady's design.

I don't have much to say about the final battle with Ramba Ral and his squad because not much was different, but also it was just as exhilarating and thrilling as it always was.

Bonus Corner:

A benefit of this being a manga I didn't consider is that the characters can have alternate outfits more often...I thought the painting outfits everyone got were charming.
