today's dracula daily had me wondering what kind of bat dracula might be posing as, so I looked up a few things.
Largest species in the British Isles: Noctule Bat (Nyctalus noctula) with a wingspan of 32-40cm (12.6 to 15.7 inches) Another large bat species: Serotine Bat (Eptesicus serotinus) with a wingspan of 32-38cm (12.6 to 15.0 inches), less common species found in southern England and Wales Most common: Soprano Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) with a wingspan of 19-23cm (7.5 to 9.1 inches) Second Most common: the visually nearly identical (though slightly bigger) Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) with a wingspan up to 20cm (7.9 inches)
source for above: woodland trust
Now those would be the bats that Mina considers normal sized. Now bats certainly range much larger, such as the golden crowned flying fox with a wingspan of five feet. But I don't think we need to look so far from England for a bat that Dracula might turn into that Mina perhaps would view as "giant"
the largest species in mainland Europe is the greater noctule bat (Nyctalus lasiopterus), with a wingspan up to 46cm (18 in). The greater noctule bat is also one of the few bats known to eat passerine birds*, and the only species that hunts them on the wing (in flight) versus while roosting*.
It's rare in Romania, but it's there. And it looks incredibly adorable

*Aka perching birds. Think sparrows, songbirds, corvids. Passerines are a very diverse group of birds. *There may be another species of bat that also does this, the Great evening bat (Ia io) of eastern and southeastern Asia.

Happy pride month, the best thing about living in the UK is that every one of our bat species have been observed engaging in homosexual behaviour of some variety.
But it's not just them! You might be surprised at just how many bats are gay, both male/male AND female/female, with a lot of bats displaying behaviour that favours both male and female partners! This behaviour has been observed in the wild in Pteropus, Pipistrellus, Myotis, Nyctalus, Plecotus, Rhinolophus, and more! As well as in captivity in Desmodus! The exact behaviours vary between species, but include allogrooming, fellatio, mounting, and even inter-species homosexual sex!

sorry if you've talked about this before, but I'm curious if clanmew have different words for different bat species? they obviously differentiate insects and birds, but bat's are harder to distinguish at a glance. cats would have an advantage with their hearing, being able to hear bat's squeaks (and I think different species make different patterns and sounds?) but like. I don't remember how many bat species there are here (I think noctule, pipistrelle, greater horseshoe, lesser horseshoe, daubenton's, whiskered, barbastelle, and serotine? I mightve missed a couple), but I love bat's so thought I'd ask. pipistrelle are the most common though I'm from the south-east of England so I occasionally see daubenton's too.
FOUR bat species! Over here in the main entry for birds, check there if you'd like more trivia on them. Clan cats count them as very special, blessed songbirds.
The ones that Clan cats have words for so far;
Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) = Popep
Soprano Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) = Ipi'ip
Long-eared Brown Bat (Plecotus auritus) = Fepfr
Common Noctule (Nyctalus noctula) = Shi'po
There are four more kinds of bat, for EIGHT total in this region, that I have not yet described because I don't have good access to their song recordings (Even the main four were ass on butts to hunt down) If you have clear recordings of the songs of these four I'll add them too.
Pipistrellus nathusii
Nyctalus leisleri
Myotis daubentonii
Myotis nattereri

7th of August 2024: Leisler’s Bat
Tumblr media
Yesterday we had a critter exclusive to an island, so today let’s look at one who’s widely distributed: Leisler’s Bat (Nyctalus leisleri). They‘re considered medium-sized for a bat [1], being around 5-7 cm long with a wingspan of 26-32 cm [2]. They’re found across Europe and North Africa, but are most commonly found in Ireland [3].
They’re the third most common species of bat in Ireland [1] and are the largest. You can best recognise them by their fur colouration, being dark near their head and lighter further down [4].
They show a classic bimodal activity pattern at night, coming out right after sunset (usually only around 18 minutes after [1]), and then reemerging coming back for more just before dawn. This is likely because their typical prey, insects, often flies, are most active during those times as well [5]. Leisler’s Bat is also a very fast, if not particularly manoeuvrable, flier, so they don’t have to worry about being caught by predators themselves if they leave their roosts too early [1].
While in nature they roost mostly in trees, they have also adapted to more urban setting, resting in attic spaces. They may also use street lights to hunt for insects attracted to light [4]. Mostly they prefer hunting in pastures, though this and their prey may vary depending on the time of year. For example in Bristol, moths and butterflies make up a good part of their diet in September, but not in June [1]. Their diet also changes significantly between countries, though remaining within the realm of insects they can catch and eat in flight [6].

Need some help with Superhero names!
I was hoping someone could help me figuring out some names for Cass in my Training Wheels au, where she becomes a hero for a couple of years before taking on the Batgirl role.
For the Robins its pretty easy to come up with a name since I could just look up bird names (or bird related words). But I can't quite do that with Cass. Maybe I could do that with Bat names but none I looked up online really seemed to fit that cute but creepy aesthetic I was looking for.
Here's a list I did think up tho:
Batbite, Batbitty, MiniBat, Batmini, Batlass, BatBoo, Minicula
Batbuff, Nyxie, Vampi, Foxglove, DuskBat, Twilight
PygmyBat, Vesper, Myotis, Barbastelle, NightBat, Raspy
Nyctalus, Noctule, Nocty, Vampyressa, (Batgirl...II ! no lol that sucks)
Does anyone like these names? I'll admit I'm not good at coming up with this stuff lol.
I also thought about looking up Chinese words as well (did you know bats are good luck in China? pretty cool) but while Cass biomom (Shiva) might be Chinese, maybe. But Cass doesn't really have a connection to her heritage like that, so maybe that wouldn't work.
If anyone likes those names, or can think up a better one let me know! I have some drawing I want to post for Cass, but I want a name for her before I do.
Thank you for your help! Here's a bonus Cass for you! :

A Noctule Bat 🦇 (Nyctalus noctula) flutters above a meadow with a pond at sunset, in search of its prey, a white ermine moth (Spilosuma lubricipeda) I love to draw bats because of their elegant wings and feisty expressions. Media: pen and ink, Copic and Pantone markers, soft pastels

Upon returning from a short time away, Emiel opened the door to his home. A ray of light shown in as the holy vampire entered into his house. His eyes scanned the somewhat dark interior, a reprieve from the harsh sun outside for his vampiric eyes. He immediately noticed an unfamiliar shape on the wall.
Nyctalus noctula, a common noctule bat. He immediately recognized it, being a polymath well-versed in many things. The bat was curled up clutching onto the wall, it's wings folded up under it giving it the appearance of a little loaf with small feets and ears poking out.
He could tell from hearing its little heart and its scent that it was very hungry and thirsty, the little bat was weakened and had come in as a result of hunger induced confusion and relative weakness and fatigue. The bat noticed his presence and chittered in fright, using echolocation to better see him. He heard its heart race, the bat was horribly afraid and regarded him with wide eyes.
// Hi anon!
I won't be answering this ask from Regis' point of view because you've done too much of writing my muse for me - something I don't appreciate. Please refrain from describing what Regis does or thinks if you send me any asks/prompts.
Setting the scene and describing what npcs do is perfectly fine of course but leave my muse to me, please :)

Are there bats that have unusually large or small wings for their body size? Does body size reliably predict wingspan?
As far as I am aware (and a quick google search seems to support this perception, I was unable to find anything directly relating to this subject and what I did find was full of technical jargon), body size does reliably predict wingspan across the order Chiroptera.* There are some species where the females tend to have a larger body size* than the males, though.
*A fancy way of saying all bats physically look proportionally similar. *Possibly only in specific measurements, such as the length of forearm, versus in general, if I understood what I read correctly from the article linked below.

Warframe Asks
I saw this ask game from derelicthorror earlier this morning and wanted to run through it. I don't know that I have any Warframe players that follow me, but I thought this would be a fun thing to answer anyway. I am not actively playing right now, but I've been around for about 9 years now.
There are a lot of questions, so they're under the cut.
1. Which primary weapon is your favorite? Secondary? Melee weapon?
Tenet Arca Plasmor has been a recent favourite for me. As far as being fun to use, I used to main with a Kohm, lol. I have not found a Kuva Kohm yet, unfortunately.  I am still a big fan of the Synoid Gammacor, despite being nerfed many years ago. I also like the chain secondaries - kuva nukor and tenet cycron. My old main used to also be the rakta ballistica! I do not have a ballistica prime, sadly :(  Melee weapon has always been the tonbo <3 I love it so so much and was lucky enough to get a riven from my friend.  I tend to skew towards weapons that are fun to use, rather than being meta. Sometimes there is overlap, but not always.
2. Do you prefer long-range combat or are you a frontliner?
Oh baby, I still spin-to-win even if it’s not the meta anymore. I prefer melee combat by far.
3. If you could naturally inflict any kind of damage, what kind would it be (i.e. heat, radiation, cold, magnetic)?
Radiation is just fun, but that might be the Mesa Main speaking. I do enjoy murdering my friends with friendly fire.
4. Who was your starter frame?
Mag!! My baby
5. Favorite NPC?
Teshin Teshin Teshin Teshin
6. Least favorite NPC?
Simaris, lol H U N T E R R R R R R R R R
7. Which faction has your favorite aesthetic/architectural design?
I am a Corpus hoe, though obviously orokin stuff looks cool as hell with the gold.
8. What’s your favorite piece of Warframe lore?
I don't really know that I have one. I feel like the lore is a bit confusing most of the time. Things get retconned, etc. I play the game with blinders on when it comes to the lore and always have.
9. What’s your favorite Operator accessory?
I love the umbra scarf when it’s open. I still use my operator because of the accessories tbh
10. Favorite ephemera?
Gloriana or Peach Blossom
11. Least favorite ephemera?
Out of the ones I own, either the Nyctalus or Eros Wings. Just too big. And the disappearing thing never works as well as I'd like, so I just avoid them.
12. Who is your favorite Cephalon?
Cy
13. What volume do you have Ordis set to?
Zero. I have personally not ever loved Ordis. After 8 years, I just cannot anymore. It did make doing New War a little funny though because his volume slider, of course, works for quests too. I think I did temporarily turn up his volume for the quest.
14. Which quest is your favorite?
The Second Dream will always hold a special place in my heart.
15. Which syndicate(s) are you allied with?
PERRIN SEQUENCE BABY Also Red Veil and New Loka
16. What is your Railjack named?
SSV Normandy, of course :)
17. Kubrow or kavat?
MOAs, even if they’re just a pale imitation of true MOAs.  But to answer the actual question, Kavats if the DNA wasn’t a pain in the ass to get. I used to heavily breed kubrows so I’m burnt out on them.
18. What’s your favorite track in the OST?
March of the MOA of course. I was super stuck on For Narmer after New War, though.
19. Who comes to mind first at the phrase “Space Dad”?
Teshin, because apparently that’s what people call him? He can’t be my dad, though, I wanna do him nasty.
20. Which faction do you hate fighting the most?
Orokin, because you get the worst of all the factions. Ancients, bombards, nullifiers, etc.
21. What was your first Prime build?
Jeez, it’s been too long. I’m almost sure my first prime was Mag though.
22. Do your operator and Warframe wear matching colors?
It depends! Mostly, yes. All of my frames and my operator have a pink/white/black/gold default. I have a few other “default” palettes I use for some frames, like neon pink/green/blue and black. When I use the alternates, I don’t change my operator.
23. Which Warframe would you take grocery shopping?
Mag because I love her.
24. Are you Sun, Moon, or neutrally aligned?
I think I’m Moon? I don’t even remember what this shit does. Have they fully explained it? All I know is that you can’t change it. I logged in earlier to look at my crew members but forgot to look at this.
25. Which planet is your favorite to run missions on?
Anything but Europa lol
26. Cetus, Fortuna, or the Necralisk?
Fortuna, hands down. I don’t like the melt though :( give me back the snow
27. What are your Railjack crewmembers’ names?
Xapp Fahkk (my first Lich, who I accidentally converted), Aeloeth, and Orukk Jiss lol I also have some cool friends like Naz Ner, Spelm, and Probate Akitiorikaidoj.  I actually logged in just to see what their names were, and while I was already online, figured I’d go see what Ticker had today. Which means I adopted Brian for the low low price of a million credits (worth it).
28. Which Warframe is the most attractive?
I have always been hot for Mag. And Mesa Prime, of course.
29. What’s a Warframe headcanon you have?
I'm not sure I have anything super thrilling, I've been out too long. I do remember that my clanmates and I used to make jokes about us all living in our dojo with our pet MOAs. Which was before pet MOAs were actually a thing and before operator reveals.
30. Do you play public or solo?
SOLO. I hate pubs.
31. Which color palette is your favorite?
Metisse, of course.
32. What’s your favorite floof?
The ostia vasca kavat floofs and their little red eyes. Adorable!
33. Business, Son, or Master Teasonai?
None, tbh, but I can deal with Biz most.
34. What’s a line of dialogue that stuck with you?
They come to this place when they know they are not pure. Tenno use the keys, but they are mere trespassers. Only I, Vor, know the true power of the Void. I was cut in half, destroyed, but through its Janus Key, the Void called to me. It brought me here and here I was reborn. We cannot blame these creatures, they are being led by a false prophet, an impostor who knows not the secrets of the Void. Behold the Tenno, come to scavenge and desecrate this sacred realm. My brothers, did I not tell of this day? Did I not prophesize this moment? Now, I will stop them. Now I am changed, reborn through the energy of the Janus Key. Forever bound to the Void. Let it be known, if the Tenno want true salvation, they will lay down their arms, and wait for the baptism of my Janus key. It is time. I will teach these trespassers the redemptive power of my Janus key. They will learn its simple truth. The Tenno are lost, and they will resist. But I, Vor, will cleanse this place of their impurity.
35. Does your Operator have a name? What is it?
I hadn’t ever considered, tbh. I suppose just ‘Viper’!
36. Who is your comfort Warframe?
Mag Mag Mag
