Mana: What It Is & How To Absorb It
For the last decade I have done a study on Elemental Magick, and what I found is very interesting!
This post is dedicated to exploring the concept of Mana as magick energy.
So, what is Mana? There are many theories but the short answer is power. It is magickal energy that exists as particles. A concept that is very common in Anime. In fact, the concept is so common that it was adopted in RPG video games. However, it is hard to say which one said it first. If the concept of Mana is so widespread, then it must be grounded in reality.
Before we continue let's get one thing clear: Magick is real. The beings you invoke in your rituals and spells actually do exist on the astral plane. The energies we summon: The Elements, natural energies, the powers of spirits, etc are very real. This is not, and has never been, a metaphor. It's not just "spicy psychology." Don't let witchy social media fool you into believing that you don't have real power.
That being said - what *exactly* do you think powers our spells? It's not spirits if that's what you think. The truth is that the beings we invoke in ritual are not the ones that fulfill our commands. If that were true then Atheist Witches wouldn't be a thing. They don't even work with spirits. If that were true, then Wizards who work with Chaos Magick Theory couldn't create Servitors. Sigils wouldn't work. So, what is the other option? The answer you are looking for is Mana.
So, I ask again, what exactly is Mana? I have a working theory: Mana is the particles of energy created by the combination of Solar & Telluric power currents. I found the answer I was looking for in John Michael Greer's The Druidry Handbook as well as several other books by various authors. But my main sources have come from fantasy anime, namely Fairy Tail, Black Clover, Akashic Records of a Bastard Magical Instructor, and The Rise of the Shield Hero.
In The Druidry Handbook by John Michael Greer, he mentions the currents of what Druids call Nwyfre (noo-iv-rah). It is the same energy that the Chinese call Chi, the Japanese call Ki, the Hindus call Prana, and we call Mana. There are two main energy currents: the Solar Current and the Telluric Current. My theory is that these currents converge in the atmosphere all around us to create the energy we refer to as Mana. This is why so much anime and so many RPGs visualize it as particles of energy in the air. Because that's exactly what it is!
So, the more scientifically minded among you are probably asking "If Mana is real, then why can't modern science measure it?" My reply is "Who told you we can't?" Consider this scientific research on how the Law of Attraction works. Your nervous system plays a big part in all of this.
Mana is basically the same as electricity, or more accurately - light. It's not that difficult to deduce if you consider the facts. In anime, Mana particles always look the same: like photons. Consider that our entire Multiverse runs on electricity. Our very bodies are electric in nature. The Solar & Telluric Currents of Nwyfre that create Mana are electric & magnetic in nature. Telluric Currents are what create ley lines, aka magnetic flows of the Earth that generate the Earth's electromagnetic field. Mountain air is so healing due to the higher concentrations of Solar Nwyfre.
This is the same reason why we use copper to wire wrap our crystals. The same reason why we work with clear quartz (piezoelectricity). The reason why we work with natural substances such as herbs and oils (trace amounts of stored electrical potential via atoms). The very reason we say to build your Wands and Staves and other Tools out of wood and metal (electrical conductivity). It's also the exact reason why we say to never use plastic in your Craft (because it is non-conductive). And finally, it's the reason why intention controls how our spells manifest (thoughts are electrical impulses).
I will end my research paper here. I hope you have enjoyed my research! I have many more metaphysical research papers to write and publish.

My Reference Guide for the Elements
I’ve made another post about how I don’t really use the elemental system for invoking the quarters, but wanted to take a little time to explore each individual element for this week’s @2019grimoirecchallenge prompts, so without further ado...
Fire:
What does it represent? Fire represents the passionate and volatile emotions: anger, lust, excitement, etc. It is energy, and motivation: the heat of the sun that warms the earth, the promise of summer and the freedom it gives us. It is change, metamorphosis, chemistry: the way a phoenix is reborn, the way one transmutes lead into gold. It’s the craftsman’s forge that makes raw material into something refined and useful. Fire is inspiration: a spark of life, or insight. It is the fire of the hearth: a warmth and a comfort, a gathering place for friends and family, the heat that cooks out food.
Deities or myths associated with it in my practice? I have a couple of deities I work with who are associated with Fire; they feel closest to Brighid and Gofannon the Smith, but I’m still feeling out my relationship with them.
How do I connect with this element? I connect to this element by lighting candles and watching their flames, by sitting beside a campfire with friends, by tracing the patterns of constellations in the night sky, by soaking up the warmth of the sun.
How do I use this element in my practice? I use a lot of candles in my practice. For me, candle magic is the easiest method of spells, because I just carve sigils into colored candles and light them to carry my intent. I keep fire lit on my altar: in a hearth-like piece and in the lantern devoted to my patron goddess.
What kinds of magic can be done with this element? Almost any kind of spellwork can use candles. I also give offerings to the fire to transform them from physical form to energy that is given to my gods. I light fire as guiding light. I offer myself into the metaphorical fires to be reforged and renewed (this would be like visualization work).
Air:
What does it represent? Air represents the realms of the mind: thought, communication, logic. It is clarity, truth, justice. It is the realm of the abstract and our capacity to think in the abstract. It deals with dreams, memories, prophecy.
Deities or myths associated with it in my practice? I can’t think outright of any deities I personally work with whom I associate with this element, though my lantern goddess and The Hunt both make themselves known with birds, clouds, and wind.
How do I connect with this element? My favorite method of connecting with this element is being up somewhere sort of high on a gusty day and letting the wind whip around me. Cloud gazing/scrying, and observing the night sky are also ways that I connect with this element.
How do I use this element in my practice? The element of air seems to be used mostly for omens and messages. I hear birds on the wind, see the riders in the storm clouds rolling in, feel the rush of the Hunt in a blustering. It lets me know that magic is afoot and that something is happening.
What kinds of magic can be done with this element? I like cloud scrying a lot: making note of what I see in the clouds and trying to interpret the images. I sometimes shout my worries to the wind to let them be carried far away from me.
Water:
What does it represent? Water is the realm of emotions, wisdom, peace, healing, depth. Water connects us to the ways between our own world and the other realms. It is the life blood of our planet, and so echoed in our own blood. It is the womb of the universe that gave forth all life. It connects us to the unseen, the mysterious, the realms of those gone before. It activates our intuition. It is ever-changing, ever ebbing and flowing. Where it brings peace, it may also smother the unprepared in its crushing depth and gravity. Water cleanses and heals.
Deities or myths associated with it in my practice? I associate my patron goddess with the water. I also associate water with The Oran Mor, and the primordial seas from which all life began. I also work with now and again with Manannan MacLir, whom is associated with the sea.
How do I connect with this element? My entire life has been spent around water: I grew up in freshwater marshes on the banks of a river, and alongside one of the largest lakes in the world. I’ve held a deep fascination with boats, sailing, and all things associated therewith forever. I connect to this element by standing barefoot in the rain, or wading through the cool muddy puddles that collect in my parents’ yard. I sit beside the river or marsh and write, draw, read tarot.
How do I use this element in my practice? Water for me has most been used for cleansing in my practice. I often stand out in a storm if I’m feeling overwhelmed or will use water to cleanse myself if a storm is not coming anytime soon. I sometimes float in a pool or a lake and let myself release all the tensions, worries, and negativity that I’ve been carrying around- this is also easy enough to do in a shower.
What kinds of magic can be done with this element? Healing, cleansing/purifying rituals can be done with water. I also like to scry with water, and will use water in my visualizations of moving between our own world and the realms where my spirit guides/gods dwell.
Earth:
What does it represent? Earth represents groundedness, stability, prosperity. It’s the realm of all the things we need on a physical and mundane level to survive: money, health, our food, shelter, etc. etc. It’s the foundation block we need to keep us steady and able to reach towards other things.
Deities or myths associated with it in my practice? I heavily associate my patron god/leader of the Hunt with the element of earth.
How do I connect with this element? I like to walk barefoot in the grass, sit beneath and talk to trees, work with clay, and meditate with crystals when it comes to connecting with earth.
How do I use this element in my practice? How don’t I use this element in my practice? I think at this point, my connection with the natural world has become so intuitive and so integral to my practice, that I don’t necessarily think about it often. But: I speak to and make friends with tree spirits, try to clean up local wild spaces, and go somewhere natural and green when I need to ground and find my center again.
What kinds of magic can be done with this element? You can use earth for things like: health, money, the home, care for your pets. Bury things in the dirt. Sculpt poppets or figures for offerings out of clay. Use crystals to focus your intent towards a certain energy. The possibilities are endless.
Spirit:
Truth be told, I don’t really use this element now that I’ve moved away from Wicca. For a long time I understood it as the culmination of the other four elements: where they merged and blended they created life energy. Spirit wove connections between the elements of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.
In my current vocabulary, “Spirit” would be replaced by Nwyfre. It is vital force that flows through all things. It is the energy latent in every aspect of our universe. It is the humming melody of the Oran Mor, if you’re able to hear it. It’s not something that is outright used and accessed as the other four elements because it is inherent in literally everything. For me, it is more an element that is understood, in the sense that I acknowledge its presence in the world around me, and know that its intricate webs of song and energy weave between myself and all things.

Cultivating Nwyfre
Nwyfre is a magical term used by Druid’s to describe the “life force” or energy we find in the world around us. It’s common to begin to explore this energy first in our own bodies. Iolo Morganwg first popularized its use, but now it can be applied to many magical arts. When I first encountered the phrase, it wasn’t a word I was…

But you can face these challenges head on with a balanced mind and heart. Keep yourself adaptable so that you don’t have to resist change. You are close to achieving what it is you want, but you have to be patient and let it come naturally. All good things come to those who wait.

I follow the path of the Seven Elements - Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Spirit Above, Spirit Below and Spirit Within.
From beginning to end, I am one with Nature.
With gratitude, I partake of this meal and in doing so, I will honor all those who have sacrificed themselves so that I may eat.
I will find nourishment in the fibers, both seen and unseen.
My body will be stronger, my mind will be calmer and my spirit will be fulfilled with each and every bite.
I will carry the spark of Nwyfre within me, flow with the waters of Gwyar, ground myself in the soils of Calas and share freely all the love that I have been given.
May the Awen inspire us all.

How magic works. The short story. And I'm more than happy to go into more detail about how I believe magic and spell crafting works, feel free to ask.
So, I'm a kitchen lady. I like to cook. I use cooking for spells and rituals and To love and honor others.
I use my kitchen stuff. And, Things get old, wear out, you get it. I've been considering new stuff for a while... Didn't want to spend the money because... Money. Plus, the old stuff still works. I've been thinking it. Not speaking it... Not asking for it... Not lamenting my old stuff. Just considering it to myself. Not even thinking much about it, just randomly at times while working in the kitchen.
Apparently, unbeknownst to the people who wanted to celebrate my birthday this year, not only did everyone, I mean this literally everyone, buy me a new item for my kitchen for my birthday, three people bought me the exact same kinda big ticket item.
Again, I honestly never said anything to anyone. And yes, I know I didn't put the idea in any heads because times are tight and I don't actually NEED new, just wanted, you know. sometimes we just daydream things we want for the sake of the fun of that.
The magic? That is magic. Getting new stuff without mentioning it. That's how putting intention into the world makes things happen. I didn't ask. I didn't perform ritual spells. I did what I always do, considered, put mental attention to eventually having some new stuff. Got new stuff.
Yes. It could be coincidence. Everyone may have just thought, gee let's get new kitchen stuff for her birthday. Of course it could be. It's weird but certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
However, it could also be magic at work and actually much more likely to be.
See, When you've lived a life of multipotentiality where you have more hobbies than space, people frequently get you stuff that is random... Markers, throwing axes, jewelry, books... Because you like it all. And when you've never had a themed birthday in your life, let alone a birthday with gifts as oddly specific as this, you must look around for a reason why this happened at this particular time. I didn't ask, nor hint. They didn't talk to each other about it. It just happened.
It really doesn't matter which side of the "is it coincidence or magic fence" you land on. Because, at the end of the day, coincidence or working magic, the end result is I no longer have to do this myself. The items I thought about, put intention toward and put into the universe or nwyfre or whatever you choose to call it, arrived in my kitchen without my purchasing them. As they say, real will is effortless.

01.01 triad Druid elements
Correspondences
According to Druid philosophy, everything in the universe is made up of three elements in some combination, with one element dominant.
If we look at our Druid ancestors' poetry and stories we can see that they revered three Elements, those being Land, Sea and Sky, or Calas, Gwyar, and Nwyfre.
[UPG] In the human body, Calas is what the body is made of, Nwyfre is what the spirit is made of, and Gwyar is what the changing states is made of.
Nwyfre
Nwyfre (pronounced “NOOiv-ruh”) is said to be an old Welsh term meaning “sky” or heaven.”
As an element, Nwyfre is the mental dimension, the expansion of the source of life and consciousness. We often refer to it simply as the life force.
Nature image: blue sky
Symbol: circle
Druidry branch: druid
Color: white
Kindred: gods
[UPG] Chakra: Third Eye, Heart, Crown
Gwyar
Gwyar (pronounced “GOO-yar”) literally means “blood” in old Welsh, but it’s more general meaning is “flow” or “fluidity.”
As an element, Gwyar is the source of change, motion, growth, and decay.
Nature image: running water
Symbol: upside-down triangle
Druidry branch: bard
Color: blue
Kindred: ancestors
[UPG] Chakra: Solar, Throat
Calas
Calas (pronounced “CAH-lass”) comes from the same root as caled, Welsh for “hard,” and means “solidity.”
As an element, Calas is the source of form, differentiation, manifestation, and stability.
Nature image: stone
Symbol: upside-down triangle with line through
Druidry branch: ovate
Color: green
Kindred: spirits
[UPG] Chakra: Root, Sacral

What's a moment in your life that left you viscerally grateful to be a diviner or to have divined about the situation?
When I did the Tarot reading that lead to me joining the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids.
I was doing a reading to understand what was going on in a relationship. The Tarot took a hard right turn, showing me that my intensity was hard on the relationship.
After doing a series of readings that followed one after the other, trying to understand what this meant, I ended up drawing the Hierophant and realized that I wanted a connection to lineage that I didn’t have, so I joined OBOD.
At the time, I had no idea how those readings connected. What did Druidry have to do with being a walking intensity bomb? But I felt a wave of very visceral relief as soon as I carried out the decision.
In retrospect, looking back over my Tarot journal, I can see the cards trying to tell me that I was having a hard time working with nwyfre and awen. I didn’t have the knowledge to hear what the cards were trying to say directly, but they pointed me to people who were able to tell me what I needed to hear, and something inside me knew that following that advice was the right thing to do.

When I first typed 'OBOD' into a Google Search to see what my friend was on about when they said they were becoming a Druid, I would have raised an eyebrow if you'd told me that you could be both a Druid, and an Odinsperson.
