DCRC Week #20 (Part 1)

Guys how has it already been 20 whole weeks time isn't real. Anyways speaking of, we're reading PKNA #16: Extraordinary Repairs which is a huge deal cause it means that after waiting 20 whole weeks I CAN FINALLY DOXX CAMERA 9'S FULL LEGAL NAME AND ADDRESS!!! IT'S S-

Okay FINE I guess I'll wait to say his name until we actually get to the right part in this post. And idk why I've even prevented myself from saying his real name in front of my friends that are going through this series for the first time cause it's not even like a secret or revelation, they literally tell you his name at the end of Day of the Cold Sun in his character sheet, but nobody reading the English fan translations would know that because nobody has uploaded translated versions of the character sheets (yet...) ANYWAYS

Just as a heads up to anyone who is reading this comic for the first time, the English translating here is a little scuffed (I assume whoever translated this chapter wasn't a native English speaker) so there are occasional grammatical mistakes but nothing too severe that it limits the effect of the story!

I love this issue, Camera 9/Stefan is probably one of my favorite characters. He's just fuckin cool man idk what to tell you. He's fairly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things but I like having him around, he's a fun character to add as a little bit of flavor to a series with so many ongoing narratives. I do wanna highlight this bit of text from the bottom of his Paperpedia page (which has been auto-translated from Italian and might be a bit off):

I like personally just barely tolerate it tho im somebody whose just Immune to this point to ugly art styles ive seen em all they cant hurt me anymore but my thing is like. Isnt venom 2003 a thing spoof? Like based off the thing??? Why did they get a hyper cartoony guy for this…. Like… huh… isnt it meant to be scary i heard???

ok so a few things

regarding the art style first:

venom comics are quite frankly full of ugly fucking art styles so i too am kind of immune to them. just like, any of the mid to late 90s venom solo comics were butt fucking ugly. HOWEVER. venom 2003 is a specific king of ugly that is particularly atrocious to me. just something about the noses, the lips, the jawlines, it's basically just the caricature art style??? but like, in a comic for some reason??? and i also really hate the caricature art style so much i don't understand why people A. make art in that style and B. pay others to make art of them in that style

but whatever. ugly art is very common in comics of all walks of life. it's fine. but the real kicker, and the real thing i was talking about that prompted me to make that specific post, is this fucking page:

i have such beef with this man over how he draws female characters. it is so needlessly objectifying and dehumanizing. like, the male characters get to just exist, but oh god, how dare a woman wake up from her slumber, we must must must depict her languid curves and the rotundity of her breasts !!! combine this very deliberate objectification with the stupid fucking pouty lips choice behind the art style in general, it's just so gross

and then, the icing on the cake was the comments on readcomiconline about that specific page from venom 2003:

anyway, and moving onto The Thing spoof:

yeah so the "shiver" arc of venom 2003 (because this god forsaken comic run is separated into arcs for some fucking reason) was a riff on The Thing (1982). which, how dare you put the good name of The Thing to shame like this.

and like, i do really think that a symbiotes x thing crossover idea could work. a symbiote who goes rogue, who has no qualms with killing anyone around and doesn't care about its hosts, absolutely would basically be like The Thing and as a fan of body horror i'd love to see a take on symbiotes like that. instead of just oh big claw monster kills people, what about big goo alien assimilates you and rends you apart atom by atom !?!?!?!!? just wish it wasn't in the image of Venom Symbiote, my beloved babygirl who has never done anything wrong ever in its entire life

and yes, the body horror aspect of symbiotes x thing doesn't even hit correctly because the art style is just so atrocious. like, the body horror itself isn't grotesque because the art itself is grotesque, and not in any meaningful way. like Venom: The Hunger (1996) is also quite fucking ugly with its art style but its purposefully ugly - the muted, putrid colors with the heavy black shading are meant to be off-putting, to visually echo the frame of mind that symby, and by extension eddie, is in. because the whole story is about how symby is sick, so a putrid color palette feels sickly, and the grotesque shading makes every character look monstrous, because the sickness is warping their sense of reality and genuinely making them feel like they're surrounded by monsters. IT WORKS FOR THE STORY!!!! but venom 2003 it's just, plain bad art. it's cartoony, it's like a caricature, it does not lend itself to body horror on par with The Thing. caricature art styles are great for like, an uncanny valley feel, but that's not what venom 2003 is going for. it has the chutzpah to show rooms littered with dead bodies, but the art style is so fucking messy and chaotic that i literally cannot make sense of what i'm looking at, so therefore the horror of it doesn't hit me. there is no visual clarity or purpose and worst of all IT'S SEXIST and i hate it

WHOLE. UNAVAILABLE SONG. 「君のくつ」 i immediately recognised the title it was one of the FIRST I EVER HEARD, and thus SURELY the MOST nostalgic and... goddamn.

cue an attempt to listen to it ELSEWHERE? youtube just showed me. a cover. o-ohhh but it WAS, *VERY* nostalgic!!! but NOT THEM. so, i tried another site. it was a *japanese* lyrics site. it actually had a link. to a youtube video. region block. of. course. ........so, my DUMB ASS has just never bothered with a vpn in all these years (used to use proxies on occasion, but...) —so i did not have one handy!! but after NOT TOO MUCH STRUGGLE, i found a jp one (and the site actually seemed familiar? h-huh...) well there was ACTUALLY some good/cute stuff. a LOT of cringe stuff. shameless asides laughing at my own cringe-but-free writing ability. peppered here & there with many an ancient ass meme phrase i hadn't heard in a decade+

and ofc, far too much, incomplete scenes, suddenly stopped, SOMETIMES NOTED with, "i'll write that later" and then i never. did. (and yet i KNOW there were more scenes??? so it was. thought up in bed. and never typed up....) (;_; )

Another Black Metal Post, Mostly for Me

Okay, I’ve been into black metal for like, 12ish years now, but exclusively Asian bands and almost exclusively some kind of fusion. There’s a lot of homework involved with black metal that you’ve got to do to determine if a band is fascist or not, and I really just did not want to do that for the longest time. Non-white bands = non-nazi bands (though there’s a small and very confused nazi presence among non-white Latinos, apparently). But my ravenous hunger for more black metal, particularly of a 2nd wave-ier variety, has set me on this difficult hunt at last, and I’ve finally turned up some things from outside of Asia that I really adore. I’m going to write about them now! Deal with it! And don’t take away my Kvlt Kard for just now trying some of these bands.  Like I said, I’ve been into the Asian stuff for quite a while now, but outside of names and some background everything else is brand new to me. Though I’m quite hardcore about not supporting the music of filthy fascists, this does not mean that I need all my black metal to be explicitly leftist in their music. I’d prefer they weren’t, honestly. My political activity is purely defensive. It is not an interest of mine. It’s a duty which I begrudgingly accept. So to that end, I do generally prefer the safe bands that still write songs about Satan and shit lol Dark Funeral This band is exactly what I was looking for. Overly theatrical, plainly Satanic (of the Laveyan variety, even), and not unlistenably raw. Even on the early stuff, the production is still there. I’ve got a certain tolerance for the rougher stuff, but it’s not especially high, so Dark Funeral’s brand of crystal-clear blasphemy really suits me. Consider me a big fan. Belphegor This is a ridiculous pair of people who are very devoted to their art, and I respect that, even if they seem like jerks sometimes. They’re often more death than black, but the blacker stuff is delightful. They’re also quite disturbing, but not really in a way that bothers me too much. Blutsabbath fuckin’ bangs. EDIT: nvm it has been brought to my attention that these dudes may be fascists, and the lyrics to SBSR off of Necrodaemon Terrorsathan are sort of damning. Fuck ‘em unless they recant. Instead, please enjoy the music of another German-speaking band, Vorga. Sarcoma Inc. Psychopathology is a nutty album. It’s supposedly blackened thrash, but most of it feels more like... thrashened black, if that makes sense? It’s also been great inspiration for a story I might actually put to page some time. As the name suggests, every song on this one is extremely evil. Except I'll Spit on Your Grave, which is a bit whiny, if I’m honest. But the rest? Yes. So yes. Carach Angren Kind of a difficult listen, since their songs often flow together as a single story, so it’s hard to pick one out and be like “fuck yeah this bangs”. But taken as a whole, the fusion of black metal and gothic horror is as natural as it is bafflingly underutilized by other bands. The vocalist is a young dude who doesn’t look like a troll, too, which is always a plus in my book for bands that perform live. Though as long as there’s a cohesive and extravagant visual presentation, I’m not too bothered even if all the members are kinda old or schlubby (Dark Funeral lmao). But yeah, a lower-key symphonic black band that’s still high-key dramatic. Thanks, very cool. Immortal I really enjoy throwing on some Immortal when I need a quick black metal fix. They’re just so purely grim that a single song can provide all the vitamins and nutrients my blasphemous body needs to keep going during the work day. And it’s nice to have a connection to the early second wave that isn’t racist trash. Also, why don’t more black metal bands do the “write your songs about a fantasy world” thing? You’d think with all the Tolkien and medieval influence it’d be more of a thing. Maybe people just don’t want to be accused of copying Immortal. Anyway, good stuff. Zeal & Ardor This is actually the band that prompted my recent hunt, because I’d known about them since their debut but wasn’t all that excited with the lack of grimness in “Devil is Fine” and dismissed the whole experiment. Then early last year I decided to check in on them, and I found out that oh, they do indeed have a lot of songs that are more black than blues. I adore the combination, but I prefer when the black part takes the lead, like in Row Row and Come on Down. One of the best bands in metal tee-bee-H. Xolotl This is a pre-Hispanic Aztec folk-black band that only released one album, and it’s a fucking banger. I regularly listen to the whole thing. Blackbraid A bit more atmospheric than I usually prefer, but it’s just this Native dude who lives in the middle of nowhere in the Adirondacks and makes songs about nature. Guy seems cool as shit, and his Native spin on the black metal look fuckin’ owns. Apparently the next album is going to be a lot folk-ier, which sounds fucking FANTASTIC because everything he’s done so far slaps. And honestly, the pagan/natural connection feels a lot more genuine here than with the Nordic bands, because Native suppression is still going on to this day. Scandinavia’s been Christian for what, 1,000 years already? bitch u isn’t oppressed, but Blackbraid’s really got something to scream about. Jute Gyte Jute Gyte is really hard to listen to and I think that’s super. But I like zeuhl, so like, sometimes I want to be musically exhausted. Jute Gyte reminds me a lot of zeuhl. They’ve also got a song called “Your Blood and Soil are Piss and Shit”, which should honestly be a new anti-fascist slogan. Love it. Crescent I just found them today, and they’re a bit more death than black most of the time, but MMMMMMMM my inner Egyptophile has been fed. “Reciting Spells to Mutilate Apophis” is such an incredibly hard song title. Though I wish the lyrics weren’t in English, but hey, Ancient Egyptian or even Coptic are probably too much to ask. But the vibe is still strong. And it’s nice that the band is actually, you know, Egyptian. So yeah, black metal. I’ve been enjoying my latest deep dive. I plan to stop by Diskunion tomorrow and see if I can pick up some Dark Funeral or something, even. It’s nice to have so much more to listen to while I work. My gripe, which I will repeat since the main point of my post was in the tags of my last post, which you can't see here, was that if you go into the 'indie sleaze' tag, literally the first 4 or 5 pages are just filled with 'sad/depressed girl' aesthetic posts, all inexplicably tagged indie sleaze when to my knowledge, there's nothing indie sleaze about them.

Lizzie Goodman's book Meet Me In The Bathroom is the whole entire reason the world flipped from finding 00s indie kids annoying to suddenly romanticising them and having nostalgia for something most of them either remember differently or didn't partake in anyway. The title of her book is actually longer: Meet Me in The Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock n Roll in New York City (2001-2011).

She reckons it was all gone by 2011. From my memory, by around 2008-09, the bubble was bursting. Some of the bigger indie bands of the time were slowing down/didn't release music for a while, and those who did had okay albums. Nothing of the same consequence as the work the same people put out from 2001-2007.

Stiffed split up in 2008 (the new wave-indie punk band that Santigold was one half of). After that, bands who I'd regard as the second wave of indie (Vampire Weekend, London Grammar, The Xx, The Vaccines) were either playing their first shows or releasing first albums. Disney pop was starting to take over the musical conversation again, as some of its biggest stars were beginning to leave their shows and start pop singing careers. Ed Sheeran played The A Team on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury in 2011, the beginning of his rise. Angles (2011) was a dismal return from the Strokes; another 2 years and the albums got so bad that the band went on hiatus. Many other bands from that period look back on their 2010s albums as some of their worst.

The 'indie, garage rock revival' movement as we knew it back then, was truly over. The last important moment I can think of from it might be the Karen O-Santigold collaboration, GO!. 2012.

All this is to say—and who fucking knows why I feel compelled to say this at all—is that if you're nostalgic for the doom, the gloom, the despair of the colourless, post-recession 2010s, if you're nostalgic for the AM period, Lana del Ray, 2015 Tumblr or grunge aesthetic (2014 was peak grunge revival/nostalgia*, fuelled by it being 20 years since Kurt Cobain's death + fashion designers feeling that we were now removed enough from grunge's working class history to send a stick-thin model down a runway wearing a $300 potato sack that year).

Then you're not nostalgic for 'indie sleaze'. That period was well and truly dead by 2013. This was not a well formatted post, and god knows I'm procrastinating on other things, but thank you for coming to my slightly confusing TED Talk.

*a small note: I lowkey disagree with 'revival'. There was one single grunge band that came out of the 2013 boom and they were even wary of associating with it (Wolf Alice). There were no grunge bands to come out of grunge 'revival'. It was only clothing and nostalgia.

Helloooo long time no see, how’s everyone else’s year been??

 Ok so everything is a dumpster fire right now but...! nvm that’s the end of that sentence.

Anyway,

I know I said this blog would go into long bouts of silence, but I suppose this has been an especially long one. Long story short, I hit a MAJOR burn-out with this project. But I did finish it! This is the farthest I’ve ever got on anything, so that’s goal #1 complete? I finished the first draft at the end of June, like I planned to, But I was seriously dragging myself along more and more towards the second half, and by the time I finished the last page I was so sick of looking at this story I couldn’t bear to go back to it for a long time. I thought I would only take a month off after finishing the first draft so I could return with fresh eyes and hopefully let the burn-out wear off, and have it edited and posting by fall, but it ended up taking longer than that and I couldn’t even get myself to open the folder again until the end of October (quarantine depression most definitely had a factor in my creative drive being so thoroughly beaten with a wrench).

So, after some thinking and writing a whole lot of words, I’m having a slightly different idea of what this is going to look like. With a bit of preface first.

My initial goal was to essentially write a complete book, beginning to end. And I did do that! It’s 154k words long. (shorter than I projected thankfully but still. Longer then the longest canon super edition) And Honestly…. I really do not like big chunks of it.

 At the end of the day, since this is a rewrite and not a fully original fanfic, a lot of what I wrote will be repeated info that readers already knows, just told a bit different. I don’t really care, because that’s sort of just what a rewrite is most of the time, but still. I wrote out every detail, and I had fun a lot of the time but there are also a lot of times when I had to force myself through a section that was necessary for a complete “book”, but not super fun for me to write. There’s multiple action scenes and training scenes (let me tell you, I absolutely LOATHE action scenes oh my god I never realized until this just how much I hate writing them!! It feels like going through boring motions to get to the stuff I actually care about, I just want to write conversations and sometimes scenery description! Action sucks!) and I can’t exactly cut this stuff, nor do I think they are bad scenes in concept, they just apparently aren’t where my expertise is. If I don’t enjoy what I'm writing, I think that is going to show and it will end up boring to read too.

When I had the idea to rewrite this, there was a big handful of specific scenes I wanted to make, and most of those scenes turned out well and I like them. I think they alone get across “this is what I wanted changed in this book.” I probably could have left it there, and summarized the smaller changes in between.

Anyway all that is to say… I will still start publishing the stuff that I wrote (frankly i’ve put too much time into this to not do it), and I really really want to start before the end of the year but we will have to see. I’m still editing right now, so I’m not 100% sure what the final product will look like, but I have a feeling what's going to happen is good chunks of it will be written out fully in prose and dialogue and all that junk, and other chunks of it will not.

The parts I can’t edit to my liking might just be summarized instead. So we may end up switching back and fourth between summarizing and normal writing. Will that be weird? Shrug! Probably, but the alternative is I will spend another 2 years agonizing over trying to fix everything and no one wants that, especially not me. I want this to be DONE now, before I hit a 3rd burn-out in the middle. I think 3+ years is MORE THEN LONG ENOUGH to be focusing on a war-cats rewrite. God willing that this was my last super long hiatus

all of you still looking at this blog after my bouts of inactivity, thanks for bearing with me! I’ll try to post more updates as I near final completion and I should have some art coming y’alls way soon

might fuck around and make a list of tony’s alters*!! right now. why not. its hard to differentiate but i could take some stabs in the dark. ok this got long so its under a cut.

mark aside (because ive said enough about him), there’s at least the two who look young, no surprise. there’s probably at least one more young one (younger, with more focus on home/family/howard trauma) but he wouldn’t be relevant to this whole... plot, anyway. but we do see one who looks to be in boarding school, so under 15, and a slightly older one who still looks ~young, i want to say 17-20ish?? and he’s very “look how fine and okay we are! our life is awesome!” but is literally in a racing suit as if fast cars aren’t somewhere he gravitates mid breakdown. i love that for him. very in character. 

there’s also uhh. cave!tony, actively bandaged. he absolutely never left the cave, and wont. theres no... yknow. there’s no adjusting to that that’s a clean split kind of thing. i dont know how long 616 was in the cave but i’m assuming also a couple of months?? like mcu?? more than long enough to end up with a permanent split who can’t really... i mean we all know he didn’t like. get therapy. he cant reintegrate. he’s probably either the old host who “died” in the cave, or he split in that environment, but either way, he doesn’t make it out. 

there’s at least two iron man splits, the sort of... early grey one and the red&gold one are shown, and i dont know enough about early comics canon to make a guess at why they’re distinct, exactly, but i’m guessing some sort of near-death-or-actual-death event that puts a nice clean line in between them. or a team change, could be less dramatic than that? unless the grey one’s JUST the mark I, in which case nvm because the difference then is obvious. escape vs be a hero, you’d need two. notably theres not a super modern iron man split shown, i’m assuming once he stopped doing the secret identity thing that stopped being a split type he’d need, but prior to that he’d need an active, functional iron man split at all times. and he’s got at least the two. (whether or not you want to call mark an iron man split... shrugs! he’s not quite the same tho, since his job is not to pilot the suit, necessarily.) 

there’s an actively drunk one, and he’s an important split, because he’s obviously going to hold onto a lot of the desire to drink/etc. i know tony does the “keep a bottle nearby to figure out how bad he’s doing” thing but honestly that’s also a “how close is this tony” meter, imo. he’s necessary but he’s also, generally, possible to keep away. if he’s holding onto the majority of that impulse it’d be, honestly... well i think it’d look like the way tony approaches his alcoholism actually (and the whole crown meant specifically to control, yknow, hulk, in ts:im? was also clearly aimed at this one, on tony’s end.) 

we’ve got this very coherent seeming business-y tony also, who i’d peg as “The Tony Stark” -- as in, the face, the name, the one who’s “on.” especially in the early days when the “host” tony was drinking, having a split whos job is company things, PR things, etc, that’s going to go a long way. he seems like that, but i’m stabbing in the dark. i could be missing sth obvious. 

we’ve also got the one in eScape in ts:im who doesn’t show up on the page in im2020 but because the kid shows up in both, i’m really... willing to extend this to him also. he has no reason to show up re: mark anyway but he seems coherent and specific and extremely out of time. probably an old host but cut after the alcoholism spiraled out of control? since he clearly drinks without much concern. but, fwiw, he doesn’t seem to line up totally cleanly with any “real” time period, and was actively being manipulated by motherboard, so...? i dont know. 

i’d argue there’s also The One Who Died In Civil War II but he wouldn’t show up in this whole convincing-mark thing because. well. he’s “dead.” like hes in there but he’s Deactivated, so to speak. host change. 

the new tony, post-mark, is someone distinct! new host. but a shaky one so far and i think this tracks with what i’ve read of iron man vol 6 also (which is only whats on MU), tony has no idea what he wants or what he’s doing but he’s trying a bunch of things, that are all very different from what he was doing before but also falling back on things that are familiar, like hosting big parties, even when it’s incompatible with his new goals. this would track with it being a whole host-switch since pre-CWII and post-mark tony are just... not going to be the same person, imo. 

i am on the fence a little about if ts:im tony and IM vol6 tony are the same person or not, and i was leaning towards “yes” because i feel like ts:im tony didn’t have enough time to stabilize, like, there were too many breakdown events happening in rapid succession while mark was building up in the background. but he had a relationship with jan that was going well, he was really trying with the eScape, etc, so i want to give him that distinctness, at least, and IM vol6 tony also did the thing where he changes his appearance up a bunch, which is kind of a red flag for host changes, especially... right after the year-long interruption that was mark’s whole... thing. 

i’d have to read a LOT more comics to say any more than this, because i’m sure i’m missing some obvious ones who should exist but aren’t present/relevant re: mark. but. here are some of my thoughts anyway!!!! tony& gives me life.

As a side note: every single person in this fandom is horrible at tagging their spoilers, you guys really need to do a better job at that because I’ve got a bunch of blockers on and I was STILL almost spoiled multiple times. Come on you guys...it literally came out today, be better about this.

Alright going to try and keep expectations low because I feel like the target audience for this is G1 dudebros who take a series about transforming cars way too seriously, but I’m still cautiously optimistic because a friend vetted for the dudes working on this show so WE”LL SEE

Episode 1

Aw man there’s only 6 episodes??? Bummer, I wonder if they’re already working on Season 2 or if they’re going to see how this does and let it die in the water if it’s not popular enough.

Things I know going in: Skyfire / Jetfire is in this, Megatron has big lips, and Elita is in it. That’s literally it, I’ve managed to avoid spoilers thusfar (though a few of the promo images implied Skyfire’s a Decepticon, so you KNOW that’s gonna break bad eventually)

The transformation sequences look so reminiscent of those stop-motion videos people do of their Transformer toys transforming. This isn’t a dig at the animation style, I think that’s rather charming and I wonder if it’s intentional.

man I’m only like a few minutes in and I’m already bored. I’m going to watch the whole thing, but I feel like this is really lacking soul or personality so far. It very much feels like the script was written by people who aren’t familiar with these characters, so they’re writing them how they EXPECT them to sound, not writing them as they actually are. It’s more than a little disappointing, but this is only the first episode, so I’ll keep going and see if this is consistent throughout the series.

I know they’re on a time-crunch because they only have 6 episodes, but they have to do more to make me care about the characters. I’m inclined to care about them already because I’m familiar with the series and because as a stand-alone, even I’m like “Ok. So?” whenever new problems come up for them. I’m not invested!

Not to compare the two, because I feel like this entire liveblog will turn into a comparative essay, but Cyberverse got me invested in characters within the first episode! They were on an even TIGHTER time-crunch because their episodes were only 10 minutes, and yet they did a great job weaving a tight narrative and making good use of their time to tell a story and have characters charm the audience.

You know, there’s a lot of talking in the show but the dialogue doesn’t actually say a lot. It doesn’t reveal much about the characters or tell me who they are.

It really annoys me that characters always pause after saying “I”. It’s always “I.........[long pause] rest of their sentence.”

Again, it feels very much like the writers read the wikipedia page for Transformers and maybe the first sentence of each character’s bio page and then wrote the entire script from there. It’s frustrating. I hate being so severe in my reviews because I hate dunking on my fellow writers because they don’t always have final say in what happens, but this is astonishingly poor writing.

Like, I can see what they’re TRYING to accomplish, but it feels like they whiff so badly.

Ugh ANOTHER WRITING PET PEEVE: Constantly having characters start to say something but then then their dialogue gets cut off. It’s fine if it’s once in a while but over and over it’s annoying

I also feel like a lot of the VAs lack...emotion. They don’t emphasize the lines. Like, “Get him into the repair bay” is one example. Depending on how you emphasize certain words in that sentence, you can infer a lot! Emotion, the state of mind of the character, etc. But when it’s delivered in such a bland way, it’s a bit like “ok whatever”, which is how I’m starting to feel about this whole show. This doesn’t go for all the VAs or all lines, but it’s consistent enough that my mind’s wandering.
