I've spent a few hours playing "A Date With Death" and I've been reminded of how much I miss playing otome games. I used to play them all the time back in highschool. Games like "Cinderella Phenomenon", "Mystic Messenger" and "Nusantara: Legend of the Winged Ones". Playing them now makes me remember how much I wanted to make my own.

And hey, if I ever find the time and learn to code using Ren'Py I still might do it. Maybe I'll pull a Stardew Valley and make all the music myself too.

Melanin Friendly Games – ‘Nusantara: Legend of the Winged Ones’

It’s Black History Month, and while I’m a week late to the party, I wanted to do something special to celebrate and what better way to do that than to flood your timelines and readers with Melanin Friendly games?! Diversity in games has certainly gotten better over the years, and as a Black woman and a gamer, I really appreciate seeing more and more developers including narratives that focus on characters that look like me. I’ve written about representation in games before, focusing mostly on indie games and visual novels, since they tend to have more inclusive casts of characters and narratives. I wrote a post last year spotlighting a list of visual novels and otome games that featured Black and Brown characters in prominent roles and I want to kind of expand on that. Every day I’ll write mini reviews of games that I’ve found that have characters of color at the forefront.

First up is the fantasy romance visual novel, Nusantara – Legend of the Winged Ones from indie developer, Sweet Chiel.

I played Nusantara the other day and jshfjsnfhksndb there are no Tumblr posts about this game and I don't know why!

Firstly, being introduced to this title screen and seeing Mitra's abs, I just- *chef's kiss*:

Although Mitra was an adorable cinnamon roll and I did enjoy his route... I actually enjoyed Reksa's route the most! I just.... I won't spoil anything but omg... I am weak.

The game (it's free but you can give the creator money, which I recommend you do!):

I really wish there were more visual novel games for nblm and mlm but there's waaaay more out there with female protags. However, at least the game itself is really good. Additionally, it focuses a bit on Indonesian culture, which I had no idea about. Overall, I do recommend!

10- What is your favorite otome game and why?

That one is hard, uhmmmm an AAA tittle I love so far is Hakuoki but I have softspot for many indie ones like Cinderella Phenomenon, I really like the job they pull off on that one.

14- Has playing the otome brought you anything in life?

Yes it did! I am a sucker for romance and romantic stories so otomes are one one my favorite things, i go mostly to see what kind of story I can read and enjoy the ride but it also has got me to think that the format as visual novels or otomes is something I would like to make as a hobby since I love to share stories so is one more path to try!

Also my best moments through my rough years were the nighters I pull completing routes on otome games, it feel nice even if I would nap after lunch ówò

17- If you were to recommend an otome to me, which one would it be?

I think maybe one of the indie ones since is more likely that you may not have try them. Also still have not get a hand on enough AAA titles yet 💦

Magical Otoge Ciel is one of my favorites, the tone is soft and a bit deep, even so is quite charming even if feels simple at first look

Nusantara: Legend of the Winged Ones is and interesting one, but as any recomendation from me depends if you like fantasy because is quite an interesting take as the idea of the story, it has it's own charisma if I can say something.

Cinderella Phenomenon is really cool, I would recomend give it a try if you haven't before, is quite a ride to be honest.

Each of this are made by different people but I personally would keep an eye on the next project because I do have faith in their works if something. Hope this are nice recs for you in any case💦
