accent notes for hespetarian marquesian/genla:
if mainland (shamal) marquesian we conceive of as british english, think of the hespet as being like scotland. genla, similarly, think of as scots gaelic in this analogy. Giada, being seaborn, would speak with a lowlands or hebridean accent and the hillfolk would speak with a highlands one.

Ok so basically…
(Spoilers for all three games and movies 2 and 4 just to be safe)
Alexander was a Human representative to the Yo-Kai world near the end of Ancient Enma’s life. He had the ability to communicate with yo-Kai and unlike most didn’t lose that ability when he got older. He was good friends with Ancient Enma and Nurarihyon, in fact there were even rumors that he and Nurari were dating.
(Nurarihyon is Zazel’s Japanese name, in my AU he changed his name from Nurarihyon to Zazel after the events of the second movie to signify his change in character and purpose)
Ancient Enma, near the end of his life, started to believe that humans were evil and the source of all that was wrong in the Yo-Kai world, so one of his first orders in this era of his life was to kill Alexander. Ancient Enma thinks that Alexander is getting too close to too many yo-Kai, that he might be trying to start a rebellion, that he’s trying to turn Nurarihyon against him. So Alexander was assassinated, and his soul was sent to the infinite inferno for his “crimes”.
Fast forward several decades.
There’s a new Enma, Nurarihyon is Zazel, and yo-Kai-human interaction is accepted and even encouraged by Enma. Zazel has mostly forgotten about Alexander, it had been decades at that point. And someone escapes the infinite inferno, a mysterious yo-Kai with the ability to steal other yo-Kai’s powers from them. His name is Azriel.
Azriel kidnaps Zazel one day and Zazel starts to remember Alexander and eventually puts two and two together.
And Zazel remembers how much he loved Alexander, and they kiss. Azriel has an “Erik at the end of POTO” moment, tells Zazel to leave him alone, but unfortunately for the both of them their love had been set in stone and there’s nothing they could do to change that.
Azriel lashes out at the new Enma, trying to steal his powers, but he can’t. Enma tries to talk sense into Azriel but is unsuccessful, and all hope seems lost when who else arrives but Righteous Zazel to save the day.
Azriel gets defeated, Enma is considering sending him back to the inferno for his crimes, when Zazel steps in and tells Enma about who Azri really is.
Zazel basically confesses his love for Azriel and Azriel is granted mercy.
Azriel from then on works for Enma in the palace and gets to date zazel.
And that’s that.
…Wow that was a lot to take in lol sorry if that was too much. I just really love Zazel and I think he needs a boyfriend
honestly, this rocks
it makes sense to me, at the beginning it was a lot to take in but after getting my brain thinking and working (trying to remember stuff + shifting gears from working with technology all day) it all just flows easily. Alexander (Azriel) coming back as a yo-kai to reunite with Nurarihyon (Zazel) felt like a hugeee “Screw you lmao, you can’t stop our love 🖕🖕” to Ancient Enma, which I always love, even when it’s just from an audience perspective at time.
I can definitely say that I am a Alexander/Azriel enjoyer all the way after reading this 👍👍

I just wanted to share the list of crimes Kabuto Yakushi commited and the amount of jail time he would have been given, though i could only really calculate the average for each individual crime and the jail time for when it is commited once, so his total jail time would be much higher (though the death penelty sorta cancles that out) Oh, and i couldnt take in account how his exact situation would effect these charges but i hope Tumblr can forgive me for that. (Note: This is based off of the legal system in North America, and because im not familiar with the legal system in Naruto, this obviously wouldnt be accurate to how his crimes are canonically percived) 1. Assassination- Life in prison (the murder of the 3th Hokage, 4th Kazekage and it can be assumed may others. The fact that the was at least two political leaders could possibly add the charges of Regicide and Political Assassination.) 2. Grave robbing- 5 years in prison. (Collecting samples for the reanimation jutsu during the 4th shinobi war, and before then for other various purposes incuding the reanimation jutsu.) 3. Treason- life in prison (The attempt to join Danzo and overthrow the leaf village) 4. Child abuse- 10 years (As it was an extream case) (The exparimentation on, physical abuse, and medical neglect of Yukimaru and it can be assumend that there were other children whom were mistreated) 5. Desertation- Death penalty or life in prison (Abandoning his mission assigned by ROOT after his mothers death, the death penalty would only be used becuase of the fact that he left to join Orochimaru) 6. Terrorism- 20 years to life (The attack on the leaf, that one castle he and Orochimaru crushed with those snakes when they were looking for Tsunade, and many other cases) 7. Unlicesend surgery and medical treatment- 8 years in prison. (All of the expariemnts that required surgery along with all the medical treatment he provided to Orochimaru) 8. Abduction- 5 years in prison (but that seems low so idk if that right) (The abduction of Sasuke, Yamato, Yukimaru, and it can be assumed that there were many others, though most were done by Orochimaru alone.) 9. Mutilation- 14 years prison (The specific act of the mutilation during the expariments) 10. Theft- 2 years in prison (considering Kabutos situation, it can be assumed that he has commited theft on several occasions, though i can think of a specific incident) 11. Extortion- 5 years in prison (Of Tsunade, Guren, and most likely many others) 12. Abuse- between 2 years less a day or 10 years in prison. (The abuse of Yukimaru, Kimimaro, Guren, Gozu, Kigiri, kiho, Nurari, Ringi and most likely many others) 13. Fraud- 2 to 7 years in prison (All of the false claims and identitys he had throughout the years) 14. Unethical experimentation (outside of the 4th great ninja war)- 10 years in prison to life in prison (The expariments he did with Orochimaru) 15. Crimes against peace- (couldnt find an average sentence) Planning and excecuting the 4th Great Ninja War. 16. Espionage (outside of war)- a term less than 10 years in prison (all of the spying Kabuto did, including the double life he lived in the hidden leafe village) ---The rest are war crimes, and all the crimes against humainty--- -Attempted Global Domination- life in prison or the death penalty.
-Torture or inhuman treatment, including biological experiments (specifically in war) (this includes the charges of Torture, unethical expariementation, and all the other silly things Kabuto did during the 4th shinobi war) -Espionage (during the war)- most likely still a term less than 10 years (All the spying he did during the war) Thats all i can confirm, but im sure theres many others. that all adds up to 115 years in prison, 4 life sentences, and 2 death penaltys. (with some assumptions about how those individual crimes would actually be treated) Though, those aproximate sentences were if that crime was commited on its own, but i think its safe to assume that if those crimes were all prsented together, he would recive the death penalty. Anyways, sorry for any spelling mistakes and if there are any mistakes in this post or things i didnt cover, please tell me!

forgot to include a TL note through that entire chapter somehow, so to make up for it here's a post explaining the wafers in Chapter 15. "Bikkurinyan Choco" is a parody of a popular Japanese wafer brand called "Bikkuriman Choco", which do indeed come with little collectible stickers inside.
Tumblr media
The sticker illustrations are done in a cartoonish, squished style, often of mythological figures. They've done collaborations with other popular media before, but no Yo-kai Watch, though. Here's some assorted ones:
Tumblr media
A standard line of stickers.
Tumblr media
Some Star Wars ones
Tumblr media
Many, many One Piece collabs
Tumblr media
And even some with real life celebrities, such as this Japanese youtuber.
I'm unsure if the probabilities for rare stickers are truly 1 in 1,000,000, but Nurari is right that people do try and sell these for a quick buck on ebay and the like.

Hantengu appearance finally clicks. The old man, Nurarihyon.
The name Nurarihyon is a portmanteau of the words "Nurari" (Japanese: ぬらり or 滑) meaning "to slip away" and "hyon" (Japanese: ひょん or 瓢), an onomatopoeia used to describe something floating upwards. In the name, the sound "hyon" is represented by the character for "gourd".[17] The Nurarihyon is unrelated to another, similarly named ocean Yōkai from Okayama Prefecture.[18]
and also Starting in the Shōwa, and Heisei eras, yōkai-related literature, children's books, and illustrated references note that the "nurarihyon" would enter people's homes in the evening when the people there are busy and then drink tea and smoke like it's their own home. It is explained that when they are seen, they would be thought of "as the owner of the house," so wouldn't be chased it away, or even noticed. They are also noted to be a "supreme commander of yōkai."[11]

Food in Devil & the Deep Blue Sea
I thought we'd kick off the Devilverse commentary on this blog with a topic that I get asked about a lot when it comes to my writing. I'll break it down by book and put it under a readmore!
To wit, the one and only thing I can say I ever felt bummed out about with regards to the worldbuilding of Exandria (par for the course for an RPG) was how little focus Exandrian cuisine gets! But I'm not writing an RPG, I'm writing books! And I love food!
Let me know what other topics you're curious about!
Book I: Crowned Teeth
The idea behind a lot of the cuisine in the Hespet Archipelago is that it's supposed to reflect the history of the area: a lot of the free cuisine has a basis in a Nurari custom or cooking method that they taught to those that had come to Nurari communities after having escaped from pirates, but it took on a very different appearance once the communities went their separate ways. For instance, we have the "timanya" that some of the crew eat, which is a free take on a Nurari dish. The word "timanya" is a corruption of the Sardinian dialect word "timagnera", which means an incense burner/thurible. In Nurari tradition, these dumplings are called as such because they're simmered in a pot -- when you lift the lid, the fragrant steam rises in the same way that incense does. The shape of the parcels, as well, is reminiscent of an incense burner.
We see this, too, early on in Vasta when we go to market. Compare the honey-bread and candied currants to the foods that we see in Ganatar: honey and berries are both sweet staples in the region, but where the Nurari put regional berries in barley milk, the free are using foreign products to emulate a similar result.
The Hespet Archipelago in the series is based considerably on the social and economic history of the islands Corsica and Sardinia. This inspiration is also reflected in one of the Hespet's bigger quirks: there are very few cows. You notice that most of the meat and dairy comes from goats/sheep! Sardinia is known for one of its own varieties of cows in the Sarda, which is considered a very small breed. One could also make the argument that the cows are also too busy sunbathing to make milk for the Hespetarians.
Book II: Wine-Dark Sea
"Timanya", as mentioned before, is a corruption of the Sardinian word "timagnera", meaning a thurible or incense burner. We actually see the Nurari dish when Fjord and Jester have lunch in Visumïa, and it's much lighter fare than the free version that Felaun and the Oxendines ate in Viga. While the Nurari still eat boar or cheese as the filling, instead of the dumplings being fried in pink dough, the filling is wrapped carefully in a thin leaf. This and the marrow and beans from the night before are both supposed to illustrate the reversal in the relationship between Fjord/Jester and King, where it's now King leading them through a world that they don't quite understand.
Kingsley's commentary on how to find nice food and drink in Gallu is supposed to serve as an ironic echo of Giada's own predicament, in which all of the good things on the islands and the best of its products are sent far away to succeed.
There's also the granita scene, which was supposed to reflect how much Marquesian influence has touched both the Hespet and the Menagerie Coast (it's the same word, but Jester realizes that the flavors are completely different -- how can a granita shop not have strawberry?).
Book III: Home to Roost, Act I
The Plank King's lunch in Darktow is supposed to show subtle disdain for how much bounty he actually has, and the way he abuses that prosperity (his copious amounts of white wine is for 'swilling out seeds' from between his teeth, for instance) -- a major theme for him in general. These are all things on his table that would take a great deal of effort to acquire, even for him: chilled soup, citrus, parsley, branzino. We see all kinds of feasts with kings where the meat in question is chicken or a suckling pig; I was trying to go for the Denethor vibe while taking into account that Darktow is an island and a maritime power.
But the most important example I can think of when it comes to this part of the book and food would have to be the "henweigh" concept in the Greying Wildlands. The henweigh's specific selection and serving method is very loosely based on something we have in Dublin called a spice bag. I also thought it would be a fun way of alluding to the purple tief's sliding scale of Irishness on the stream (while Tal was going for a Belfast accent and Lucien's accent is somewhat Generic Southern Irish, the inverse is true of spice bags: they're very popular in the Republic, but not so much in the North), and also referencing his bit in canon where he talks about his favorite food being "spiced cream", which as most people have pointed out isn't really A Thing.
Also, "henway" is a Pun Trap much like "updog", "Greek urn," or "Candice". You now have an answer to the question that isn't "8-10 lbs." You're welcome.

Am I the only one who thinks that Kouen (Enma)‘s treatment in the second movie was quite messed up ?
I mean- The kid was assigned as king but his second in command legit locked him up and asked him for resignation because he thought that he wasn’t worthy of his title. I know that kouen could easily escaped from it but you can’t deny that it’s not fucked up.
And ngl, Zazel feels like a character that can’t cope with the loss of his previous lord.
Absolutely not ! You're not the only one, I also think Kouen's treatment was just... absolutely messed up in the second movie ! Not only was he completely mistreated, but Zazel also made it ten times worse...
There's a lot to talk about as far as they are concerned, but I tried to keep it as short as I could ! I apologize in advance for any mistakes or if it is overdevelopped ! Also don't hesitate to send me any other questions about Yokai Watch !
I feel like the end of the second movie does not answer the issue their story wanted to tackle.
The whole point was to help Zazel moving on from his trauma of losing Ancient Enma from very probably a disease (which is even more cruel considering it must have been killing him since numerous years), and finaly enabling him to move on and accepting Koen as the new ruler of the Yomakai. Sadly, instead of actually showing us that even if he appears as evil, he remains a father figure deeply caring for Koen, a litteral child ! By admitting his faults and showing affection towards him... they prefered to show us that in the attitude of Koen, Zazel still saw Ancient Enma in him, as shown below.
Tumblr media
Which is totaly the opposite of what the meaning of this story was supposed to be ! By this action, Zazel doesn't only shows us that he still is not ready to move on, but even worse ! He is still trying to cling to the last remainings of his beloved king that he sees through Enma.
Which would also explain a lot of things about him. For example, why he chose a sickness over every other ways to restrain Koen without it appearing suspiscious. The same sickness that took away Ancient Enma. Another example would be how he quite litteraly locks up Enma in his own palace to make him fill up paperwork. And apart from his obvious hatred of humans, it could also be interpreted as a desperate need for control. To be able to protect at all cost the "New body of Ancient Enma", while shape-shifting it to his heart's content in order to make him act exactly like his predecessor.
And obviously, such an unhealthy relationship couldn't bring any good to a young and manipulable child such as Koen.
Firstly, he was assigned as king in his early childhood, very probably because of the chaotic situation surrounding the aftermath of his birth, as seen in Forever Friends, which burdened him with way too much responsabilities and duties.
This very probably is an element explaining his quite rebellious personality, especially towards authority.
But as if it wasn't enough to mess him up, he could not even be comforted and guided by his only parental figure left after Ancient Enma passed away ! No wonder he purposefully stayed trapped by Nurari to beat him right after with absolute rage. He simply doesn't know how to respond to stress and his emotions in general other than through anger.
Furthermore, he could not even express his personality, as Zazel would not give him any chance. This could also be the answer as to why he runs away to the human realm so often in order to finally express himself. All he did was trying his best to keep up with all the standards he had set up for himself, while begging for guidance, and acting like the child he is.
