Installation requirements and precautions for sand dust test chamber
Tumblr media
The scientific name of the sand dust test chamber is Dustproof chamber, and Dustproof Testing Machine. It is used for IP dust testing of products. Its scope of use includes but is not limited to electrical appliances, lighting fixtures, instrumentation, intelligent robots, camera equipment, vacuum cleaners, sweepers, and other products. working principle: The sand dust test chamber is a closed test chamber where the powder circulating pump can be replaced by other methods that can suspend talc powder. The talc powder shall be filtered through a metal square mesh sieve. Straight wire diameter 50 μ m. Mesh size 75 μ m。 The amount of talc powder used shall be 2kg per cubic meter of test chamber volume, and the number of times of use shall not exceed 20. The medium used in the sand dust test chamber is relatively strict. The dust is dry talc powder, and the talc powder should be filtered through a metal square mesh sieve. The diameter of the wire is 50 um, and the mesh size is 75 um. The dosage of talc powder is 2kg/m3. The criterion is that dust cannot be completely prevented from entering, but the amount of dust entering must not affect the normal operation of the equipment. Installation requirements for sand dust test chamber: 1. The site must have sufficient space to accommodate the test equipment and leave appropriate maintenance space; 2. The power supply for the device should have good grounding facilities; 3. The space height of the site should be such that after the installation of the device, it can operate normally, maintain and repair in the future, etc; 4. The device should be located in a place where the perennial temperature is maintained at 2-35 ℃ and the relative humidity is not greater than 85%, and there should be good ventilation facilities; 5. It should be installed in a place with little dust; 6. The ambient temperature of the installation site must not change sharply; 7. It should be installed on a horizontal ground (use a level meter to determine the level on the ground during installation); 8. It should be installed in a place without direct sunlight; 9. It should be installed away from combustibles, explosives, and high temperature heat sources. Precautions for sand dust test chamber: 1. When there is a fault in the internal sand dust test chamber, immediately stop heating and give a fault prompt to indicate that there is an internal fault; 2. After the test, first turn off the running switch, then turn off the main switch. When opening the door for sampling, pay attention to the sand and dust flushing out; 3. The air temperature in the sand dust test chamber should be high enough to ensure that the relative humidity in the box reaches 25% or less. Place the sample at room temperature in the test chamber in the normal use position or according to relevant regulations without packaging, without power, and ready for use. If multiple samples are included, attention should be paid to avoiding contact between samples and shielding each other from dust; 4. Injecting sand and dust into the test chamber ensures that the specified dust concentration is maintained within the specified injection time or throughout the test period; 5. After the completion of the conditional test, the sample remains in the test chamber until all the sand and dust settle; 6. The sample volume should not exceed 25% of the volume of the test chamber, and the sample base should not exceed 50% of the horizontal area of the working space of the test chamber. SC-015 Dust-proof Test Chamber (Sand Dust Chamber) is applied to physical and other related performance tests for electronic and electrical products, lamps, electrical cabinets, electrical components, automobiles, motorcycles and their parts and other products under simulated dust climate conditions. Normal maintenance details for the carburetor
The normal maintenance of carburetor is actually to maintain the cleanliness of carburetor when leaving the factory, which is controlled as a key index of carburetor quality assessment in the professional carburetor manufacturer, and uses a kinds of advanced equipment and technology to strictly control in each link of production. Therefore, in order to ensure the normal use of the carburetor, we must pay attention to the normal maintenance of the carburetor: clean the carburetor regularly, keep the oil duct and airway clean, and the patency of small aperture. This is also quite important to extend the service life of the carburetor. Many failures of carburetor performance can be solved by regularly cleaning the carburetor regularly.
Carburetor is a key component in the engine, and small changes may affect the performance of the vehicle. Therefore, in the process of carburetor disassembly, appropriate tools should be used, and the strength is moderate, in order to prevent the deformation of the parts. The disassembled parts should be placed in order to prevent leakage or misassembly in the assembly.
Cleaning of the carburetor shall be carried out in a clean site. First, wipe the outer surface of the carburetor, the cleaning of internal parts can be used carburetor special cleaning agent or industrial gasoline. In addition to impurities, pay attention to cleaning the gasoline gel on the surface of the parts. The cleaned parts should be cleaned with compressed air, not the cloth or paper that can be used to prevent re-pollution. Blocked holes should not be opened by hard objects such as steel wires to prevent the change of the aperture caused by the carburetor performance changes, should use gasoline or compressed air cleaning out.
During the assembly process of the carburetor, avoid once tightening the floating chamber coupling screw, the carburetor and the engine coupling screw. It must be tightened several times. Generally, the tightening torque is 12N.m-m between. Otherwise, it will cause the deformation of the binding surface, and appear the air leakage or oil leakage phenomenon. The tightening torque of measuring hole parts is generally 1.5N.m~3.0N. Between m, the tightening torque will damage the thread, resulting in deformation of parts and even metal chips, causing secondary pollution and affecting the performance of the carburetor.
In the process of cleaning carburetor, if more sediment is found in the float room of carburetor, it is often caused by the failure of gasoline filter. At this point to check the gasoline filter, if it is invalid, you need to clean or replace a new gasoline filter.
If the motorcycle is not used for a long time, it is necessary to drain the indoor fuel of the carburetor float to prevent the gasoline gum deposition and condensation, resulting in the carburetor failure. In addition, it should be emphasized that: because the position of the idle adjustment screw on the motorcycle emissions, idle, transition, fuel consumption and other performance have an important impact, the carburetor is generally prohibited to turn the idle air adjustment screw cleaning. If it is necessary to remove the idle air regulating screw, you should first screw the adjusting screw through, remember the number of screws (accurate to 1 / 8 laps), and return according to the original number of laps.

The One Moto Show 2017
I spent most of my weekend at the One Moto show manning the Latus Motors booth with our Used Parts department. So, unfortunately I don’t have a ton of photos of all of the amazing things that were happening in this old pickle factory.
Tumblr media
There were all kinds of amazing stuff, Icon had their own VIP room, there were a TON of incredible vendors. Not to mention the freaking mini bike races, which I’m bummed I didn’t get to do, but it was pretty awesome. I did get to ride our HD Street 500 Tracker build up and down a steep ramp which was fun as shit!
Tumblr media
I did get to meet a lot of lovely new people. No one will ever be able to clearly explain how odd it is to have handfuls of people you’ve never met in person come up to you, know your name, what you’ve been up to, and ask you specific questions about future plans. But! It’s also pretty incredible to actually see and meet these faces in real life that you know so well from the internet, and immediately pick up conversation like you’ve known each other personally for months. It’s almost nice to be able to skip the awkward “oh um. cool.. what do you do for a living? what are you into? .... are we into the same things?”
Tumblr media
Anyway! I got to see my babes of Hinterland Empire, and finally meet the man behind Inked Iron in the flesh,got to see my favorite Montana builder from Number 8 Wire Motorcycles, not to mention hang out with my all time fave @motolady !

little bumps in the road (pt. 12)
Part 12. PART TWELVE?!?! WHAT
Previously on LBitR
Alex stays with them for quite some time that night, working out the logistics for the next step of their newly-formed game plan. Lena goes over the reading of Kara’s blood she obtained at LuthorCorp a few times, and the two of them discuss different strategies to clean Kara’s bloodstream of any lingering Kryptonite into the wee hours of the morning.
It’s refreshing, in a small but not altogether insignificant way, to discuss science with Alex. It’s good to talk shop, as it were, with someone who knows their stuff, and Alex undoubtedly knows her stuff--her expertise in xenobiology provides truly valuable insight.
The problem, however, is that whenever Lena says anything, Alex‘s eyes turn immediately to suspicion. It’s not outward hostility, which is certainly an improvement upon their encounter at LuthorCorp, but still, it’s uncomfortable. Not that Lena doesn’t deserve it, but still. Uncomfortable.
It doesn’t help that a staggering amount of what Lena knows about Kryptonian biology comes from Lex’s journals. When that little tidbit of information comes to light, Kara goes completely silent, and Alex, crossing her arms over her chest, purses her lips into a line so thin they almost disappear entirely.
Lena can only look down and tug at her fingers as she wilts with shame.
In they end, after much discussion, Alex asks for a detailed list of equipment Lena might need, and Lena silently writes it out on the cheap little motel-provided notepad. Alex takes one look at it, and sighs.
It would be such a simple thing to do if they could just go to the DEO. But they’re not about to risk it--this  little Metropolis detour was already much more dangerous than any of them are willing to admit.
Before she leaves, Alex begrudgingly takes Lena aside and hands her a little rolled-up piece of paper--Lena almost thinks it’s a cigarette at first. She takes it with a questioning look, unrolling to see ten digits of a phone number.
“Pay-phones only,” Alex says gruffly, putting on her motorcycle jacket. “Two rings, then ‘hello, yes’ means talk, ‘yes, hello,’ means it’s a no-go. Anything else, it’s not me on the phone. Memorize that, then throw it away.”
Lena nods, and mouths a silent thank-you. The number is memorized within seconds.
By the time Kara and Alex say their goodbyes--Lena stands awkwardly to the side, feeling like an intruder--the sun is only a few hours away from rising, but Kara insists they try to get some sleep anyway. Lena tosses and turns for the scant hours they have, seeing flashes of green every time she shuts her eyes.
They depart early, bleary-eyed, and groggy, crawl into the Jeep and get ready to travel south. It’s the tail-end of summer, and the air is still muggy and warm, and the Jeep roars down little unnamed roads. The new plan is the old plan--drive with no distinguishable route; except now they do have a route--one that Lena assumes Alex fabricated by throwing darts at a map.
The days bleed into one another until Lena begins to lose track of time altogether. No matter where they go, they never stay more than a night; they call Alex on pay-phones at select checkpoints and receiving their next point in the route, and Lena crosses them out on the map as they go. Kara does most of the driving, while Lena sketches out diagrams and writes down formulas on loose paper until she gets too car-sick to continue.
It feels like another two weeks in, when they finally hear from Alex again--Lena is the one calling this time, while Kara gasses up the car. They’re somewhere in Louisiana and the heat inside the phone-booth is absolutely stifling, but Lena doesn’t dare leave the door open. A quarter clinks, and she dials the number Alex gave her in Metropolis by rote.
“Hello, yes,” Alex mutters on the other end of the line
“We made it,” Lena says. Alex then rattles off a series of numbers-- the coordinates for their next checkpoint--and then promptly hangs up. Lena stares at the numbers for a moment, thinking it strange--it doesn’t seem too far from where they are now.
And it turns out to be not even ten miles away, which immediately makes the hairs at the back of Lena’s neck stand at attention. The place looks to be an abandoned barn in the middle of nowhere--there are no buildings in the vicinity for miles. Lena can tell Kara is also suspicious; the car rolls to a stop a few yards away, and her brows crinkle in confusion.
“Are you sure this is the right place?”
Lena nods, almost wishing she wasn’t. She almost suggests they turn back, but then something catches her eye--it looks like a graffiti tag, or something like it, right on the dilapidated door. She squints, trying to make out its shape, a five-sized diamond with... could it be?
“Lena?” Kara asks again, but Lena is already stepping out, briskly approaching until she can clearly see the Supergirl sigil painted in red on the worn wood. She turns to where Kara is still idling the car and beckons.
“This is it.”
Together, they slide the heavy doors open. Lena expects a lab, or at least some desk space with some equipment, but the sight that greets them once the sunlight illuminates the barn is... unexpected.
It’s an RV. Not overly large--something either of them could easily drive and park without too much trouble, but it has Lena scratching her head. Until they go inside--the keys were taped to the driver’s side window.
It is a lab. A mobile one.
“Wow,” Kara laughs as she takes in the beeping machinery and carefully organized supplies. “This is some Breaking Bad stuff!”
That gets a chuckle out of Lena, but she’s too busy to actually be amused--the RV is absolutely jam-packed with everything she requested and more. There’s even a bed--a cot, really, that comes down from where it hooks onto the wall of the vehicle-- attached to machinery that hopefully, after some tweaking, would be able to separate the traces of Kryptonite from Kara’s blood much in the same way as platelets were collected at a blood drive.
Hopefully.
For the first time in weeks, Lena allows herself to hope--she has direction now, a plan, as short-term as it may be, and her hands are positively itching to get to work. All those mental schematics, those formulas and theories she’s been scribbling until now--she can finally put her brains to good use. She can finally do something.
She almost feels like a kid at a candy store as she goes through everything Alex had managed to acquire for her use; there’s a giddiness that comes from unwrapping a box of brand-new microscope slides, a childish cheerfulness from untangling wires and tubing, and just overall excitement when she turns on the simple spectrometer on a modified counter and hears it whir to life, lights blinking at her almost as happily.
It’s just what she needs to unscramble her mind--to occupy it, fully occupy it with something useful. Lena’s so taken with what she finds, she almost forgets that Kara’s still there, looking at her with inexplicable fondness in her eyes.
“So,” Kara clears her throat, caught staring. “We’re in business, then?”
Lena smiles, and for the first time in forever, it finally feels like she means it.

i found some behind the scenes photos from a set dressing website of what pietro’s room in DoFP looks like from angles we didn’t get to see during the film (we spent a criminally small amount of time down in his room!) and they’re a little low res but have a lot of fun details in them, such as:
not only does pietro hoard a bunch of random things, he organizes them by category; he has a random set of shelves stocked with neatly ordered bowling pins, keeps traffic lights and street signs in a cluster, etc.
he has a TON of leather jackets in a suprisingly wide range of colors (i see at least two tan ones and two pretty dark red ones, and a couple black ones, and what looks like it could be an orange one?), and they seem to be a favorite item of his to “pick up”.
he DEFINITELY does not make his bed.
pietro DOES own a motorcycle (with the requisite helmet, which seems to be red, so safety first!), and more than a few skateboards.
he seems to collect a lot of electronics, with a penchant for TVs and cameras, and more than a few music playing systems (my favorite and the hardest to identify is this combination record and 8 track player called the “weltron 2005 spaceship”!) , and it’s at least somewhat canon that pietro knows how to tinker with them to get them working at his own personal specs: his tape player on his belt is definitely customized, and his pong machine has its framerate and game speed upped for him to be able to play against himself at the rate that he does, so it’s more than likely that pietro, himself, is the one futzing around with these machines.
he has, from what i can see, at least two electric guitars and a cymbals set, along with what looks like a disassembled drum kit; it’s unclear if he plays, but he seems to love music a lot (as evidenced by his massive record collection and all the music/stereo systems he has in his room) so i wouldn’t be surprised if he was teaching himself to play guitar!
the table in the center of his room/nearest his bed seems to be a recycled industrial wire spool; pietro got into ‘upcycling’ back in the 70′s!
probably as promotion/product placement, there are more than a few pepsi bottles and a pepsi sign hanging in his room. some empties and half empties are on his spool table, with some more full ones stacked in an alcove; looks like his food hoarding tendencies don’t begin and end with hostess snack cakes! there also appear to be a number of pringles cans (again, likely as product placement), and, on the twinkie/hostess cake hoard wall, we can see a good number of lemonhead boxes. just nice to know what other kinda snacks he seems to like!
there’s more, but that’s just some of the fun stuff you find out looking a little closer!

Upon request, here is a rec list of bottom Louis fics where Louis is pining for Harry. We hope you’ll enjoy this list. We also have a mutual pining rec list here and we will have a pining Harry rec list eventually. Happy reading!
1) Down On Your Knees, You Don’t Look So Tall | Explicit | 3445 words
Louis and Harry are friends, and best ones at that. Louis loves Harry more fiercely more than he's ever loved anyone, so he doesn't really have a problem with it when they start doing this thing. this wonderful, wonderful thing.
2) You Had Me At Hello | Explicit | 4529 words
Louis works in the shop next to Harry's cupcake shop.   Louis pines after Harry until he goes into a heat and Harry finally catches up.
3) Just Like Live Wires | Explicit | 5427 words
Harry climbs into Louis’ bed when he’s cold. Louis pines.
4) Something To Live For | Mature | 5535 words
After over a century of waiting for Harry to realize they're mates,  Louis gets his heart broken when his friend announces he's found his 'one' in a human girl named Teresa. Wanting only happiness for Harry, Louis accepts that it just wasn't meant to be and decides it's time to let go of the immortal life.
5) Five Times Harry Styles Was Jealous | Mature | 6184 words
Harry's jealous all the time but there were five times that definitely stand out. Five times that changed Louis and Harry's relationship.
6) On My Mind All The Time, Say You're Mine | Explicit | 9261 words
“Dude, we’re inside, and it’s night time. Those don’t look as cool as you think they do.” Louis could kick himself, he sounded so stupid, but it certainly got the guy’s attention.
It was at that unfortunate moment that he noticed several other things about this hot asshole, that he hadn’t noticed just staring from afar. First, when Louis spoke to him, his gaze was kind of unfocused behind his sunglasses, and secondly, that he had a red and white cane folded up under his arm.
“I’m… Blind,” the man chuckled, awkwardly.
Louis wanted to melt into a puddle out of pure embarrassment.
“I— am so sorry. I have to go.”
“Hey, wait, wait,” the man soothed, grabbing at Louis’ shoulders before he could get away.
“I’m sorry,” Louis repeated, looking down at his shoes.
“It’s alright,” He cackled. “I get it a lot. More than you know.”
7) Let The Beating Waves Come Drag Me Down | Explicit | 9447 words
“Just try it, the worst thing that could ever happen it’s that you won’t like it” Niall had told him. And there he was, on the way to one of these pubs created for perverts, willing to break up the routine to try something new, something that terrified as much as excited him.
One night to get swept up in passion, one night to let the devil get in.
"Tonight, I’m going to make you scream of ecstasy Louis,” he said with a raspy voice full of control, making him tremble with anticipation.
8) Got It Right Such A Long Time Ago | Explicit | 9699
There are a lot of people Harry might expect to find on his doorstep at three o’clock in the afternoon these days.
It could be the delivery man, come to drop off the pair of boots Harry impulsively ordered online last week. It could be one of his neighbors, dropping by to complain about how a party he’d thrown weeks ago had clogged up the street. It could also be any number of his friends in L.A., who stop by unannounced most days to mooch off Harry’s food or whisk him away to try some new yogurt shop.
As a rule, it definitely cannot be Louis Tomlinson, although Harry’s blinked at least three times now, and it’s still Louis standing there, a backpack slung over his shoulder and a duffel bag at his feet.
9) You Know What They Say | Explicit | 10232 words
Nice guys always finish last.
10) Call If You Need Me | Explicit | 10770 words
If anyone asks later on, Louis plans to tell them that it’s all Niall’s fault.
11) Love Is Like This; Not A Heartbeat, But A Moan | Explicit | 13150 words
Note: This fic is locked and can only be read by AO3 users.
In which Harry loves Louis, but Louis has been cold to him ever since he presented as an omega at age fifteen.
Eight years later, Louis approaches Harry with a request, and who is Harry to deny him?
12) Just Let Me | Mature | 14714 words
The party was going well. So well, Niall had already sworn undying love to one multi-tiered chocolate cake, two friendly corgi-poodle mixes, Zayn’s hair, and the entire population of Los Angeles. So well, Zayn had only laughed and ruffled Niall’s hair and not even twitched towards a cigarette. So well, nearly everyone had spilled far past the boundaries of the night’s original plans, extracting bottles of vodka from the cabinets and losing a lot of clothes. Harry had proclaimed that he was finally going to throw a small and very grownup dinner party and of course here they were three hours later, fifty people half-naked in the pool. Soon to be full-naked, if Louis had to guess. Everybody in LA loved a heated pool. Everybody loved Harry.
13) We’re the New Romantics | Explicit | 16054 words
Alternatively, a high school au where Louis pines and Harry is not who he seems to be. Featuring peanut butter banana milkshakes, motorcycles, and first times.
14) Wait For Me (To Come Home) | Explicit | 16066 words
A future fic of time stamps where Louis finally comes to grips with a love he'd denied for too long.
15) Deflower Me | Explicit | 20154 words
Louis is a proud virgin, and no matter how much society tries to make him feel like a freak for not acting on his natural urges, he doesn't suffer from his lack of experience. He has never felt drawn to someone in a way that made him want to get involved sexually with them, and he isn't planning on rushing himself so he can get some because people think it's what he should do.
In walks Fratboy, the Serial Haunter of His (wet) Dreams, who thankfully has a little business going on that might be just what Louis needs.
16) I Wanna Be More Than Friends | Not Rated | 20721 words
The one where Harry’s an alpha with no sense of smell, Louis’ an omega who isn’t allowed to scent his best friend, and that’s all they’ll ever be. Obviously.
17) The Way The Storm Blows | Explicit | 21649 words
Louis doesn’t have a habit of thinking about Harry’s dick.
That would be weird, seeing as they’re best mates, and they share a flat, and they’ve spent holidays at each other’s family homes. Their friendship hasn’t ever risen to a point where Louis should want to see his mate’s dick, and he’s happy to keep it that way.
Except, all that Louis can think about is exactly that. The size of it. The shape. The amount of people it’s been in.
Maybe it’s the tequila talking, or the fact that Louis’ just recently walked in to an eyeful of Harry taking turns on some slags that he’s never seen before, but. Louis’ mind can’t stop obsessing over the idea.
18) Ours Are The Moments I Play In The Dark | Mature | 30830 words
Jane Austen's Persuasion AU. Nine years ago Louis Tomlinson was persuaded to break off his engagement to Harry Styles, a poor sailor. Since then Louis has come to regret being so easily convinced to give up his one chance of happiness. Now Louis' family is in debt and his childhood home is being sold. In a complete reversal of fortune, Harry has returned to England a wealthy bachelor looking to settle down. Events conspire to bring them together once more though Louis is- must surely be- the last man on earth that Captain Styles would think of now.
19) If Ignorance Be Bliss | Mature | 30429 words
Uni AU: Harry is too experienced, and Louis just wants to get to experience him.
20) Where The Lights Are Beautiful | Mature | 31170 words
The accidental bonding a/b/o fic.
21) Mark My Word (We Gon’ Be Alright) | Explicit | 35524 words
"He’s always known that there would come a time when Harry would bond with some beautiful, quiet omega, and they would have lots of curly-haired pups and live happily ever after.
Knowing it and living it are two very different things, though. Watching the object of your affection desperately search for a mate and completely disregard you as an option is all sorts of painful, but it is what it is, and Louis is just going to have to learn to live with that."
22) Before We Knew | Explicit | 39831 words
Louis has been skeptical of soulmates for years so it seems like fate when he finally bumps into the owner of the obnoxiously large signature printed into his skin since age sixteen: Harry Styles, a human rights attorney who is firmly against soulmates.
23) Eyes Off You I Explicit | 39396 words
A Charlie’s Angels inspired fic where Louis is the brains, Harry is the charm, Liam is the muscle, and Niall drives the getaway car - and Zayn is there, too. sometimes.
24) Kiss Me On The Mouth And Set Me Free (Nut Please Don't Bite) | Mature | 42074 words
Harry is the CEO of Flora Corp, Louis is his new secretary.
"...Louis wanted him so badly. Wanted Harry to pick him up, bite him, and break him. Make Louis his, make Louis cry, make Louis a beautiful, plump, pregnant omega..."
25) Let Me Touch You Where Your Heart Aches | Explicit | 46625 words
A Friends with Benefits AU, in which Louis falls in love and Harry is jealous. There is some Karaoke singing somewhere in there, because how do you write a romantic comedy without a Karaoke scene?
26) Underneath The Moon | Mature | 46927 words
In five years’ time, Louis would be the one saying to his students about how he knew the great Harry Styles, in a time before he had ever put out an album or performed on a real stage. Harry fucking Styles had been his best friend and he still loved him, he always would. But they couldn’t stay that way.
27) The Sidelines | Explicit | 47078 words
Note: There are mentions of Top Louis.
Or Harry and Louis play hockey for Penn state and can’t stand one another, since they can’t keep their hatred off the ice their coach and team do what they can to keep their hard earned spot in the playoffs and their two star players from killing each other.
28) Waiting For The Tides To Meet | Explicit | 59873 words
Soulmate AU. Everyone is born with heterochromia — one eye is their own eye colour, while the other is the colour of their soulmate's. It's only when they meet their soulmate for the first time that their own eyes match properly. After a hazy night at a frat party, Louis wakes up to blue eyes and the shocking realization that he had met his soulmate, without any sober recollection. Seven years pass where Louis comes to terms with the fact that he'll never know who his soulmate is. Then one fated summer, a beautiful green-eyed photographer arrives at Louis' workplace, with promises of endless laughter and a familiar feeling in Louis' heart.
29) Pinkies Never Lie | Explicit | 83615 words | Sequel

30) Inevitable | Explicit | 185917 words
AU where Louis and Harry used to be more than friends, but everything had to change the day Harry introduces Louis to his new girlfriend.
Check out our other fic rec lists by category here and by title here.

Top Five Harley-Davidson Sportsters, Part One: Ironheads
Harley-Davidson has just rebooted one of the world’s longest-running model lines, with the launch of the new Sportster S. But remarkably, it’s only the third major engine update in the Sportster’s 60-plus years on this earth.
Before the new Revolution Max-powered Sportster S came, we had the Evolution motor that debuted in 1986. And before that, the iconic Ironhead. But throughout each era, the Sportster has always been a mainstay of the custom scene.
To celebrate, we’ve rounded up our ten favorite Sportster builds, divided by their motors. This week, we’re featuring five top-shelf Ironheads from some of the world’s best custom builders—including illustrious names like Max Hazan [above] and Hideya Togashi [below].
Next week, it’s the Evo’s turn.
Hide Motorcycle There’s a long history of Japan’s love for Americana, and the humble Sportster is no exception. Case in point: this Ironhead Sportster by Hideya Togashi of Hide Motorcycle (that’s ‘Hee-day’). It was one of the stars of 2018’s Mooneyes show—a show that Togashi-san is a regular fixture at.
The bike’s built around an original but refurbished 1966 XLCH motor, complete with a Linkert DC-7 carb. But the rest of it is mostly is custom, and it was built without any specific style or theme in mind. “As always, I cherish the balance, and maximize the beauty,” says Hideya.
The motor sits in a scratch-built nickel-plated hardtail frame, with the OEM frame number plate grafted on. Hideya kept the original steering head, triples and forks, but added custom sleeves. The Harley rolls on 21F/18R wheels with drum brakes.
Hideya fabricated the aluminum headlight nacelle and fuel tank, and built the oil tank. The rear fender’s been scalped from a vintage Harley FX Super Glide, then modified to suit. Swept back bars and a pair of beautifully-bent nickel-plated exhausts add to the vintage vibe.
The paint’s extra classy too—a 1930s Harley scheme laid down by Skop Paint Works. Hide’s Ironhead blends vintage speedway and flat track styles together to create a minimalistic and impossibly cool machine. The perfect use of an Ironhead motor. [More]
Hot Chop Speed Shop Here’s another bike that stopped visitors to the 2018 Mooneyes event dead in their tracks: a twin-engined Harley drag bike by Kentaro Nakano at Hot Chop Speed Shop in Kyoto. Using two Sportster XLCH engines, Nakano-san built the monster as a tribute to the drag racers of the 70s.
Unsurprisingly, it picked up two awards at the show—from the top Japanese mags, Hot Bike and Vibes.
‘Double Trouble’ uses a 1969 Ironhead in front, with an older engine at the rear. Both run with S&S Super B carbs, fitted with custom velocity stacks. Kentaro’s friend Kazuhiro Takahashi of Sakai Boring helped rebuild the engines.
The two V-twins are linked by connecting plates, and their output shafts are connected to two separate primaries. The transmission’s a four-speed from a 1980s Big Twin and Kentaro has set the timing of the two motors so that they go ‘potato potato’ at idle, but scream at high revs.
The whole arrangement is housed in a custom hardtail frame, fabricated from steel tubing. There’s a set of early 70s Ducati Imola forks up front, with 18” rims at both ends wrapped in M&H drag slicks. Kentaro installed a pair of Airheart brakes up front, with a Wilwood brake out back.
All of the bodywork was fabricated in aluminum, from scratch. Fuel sits in the cylindrical reservoir up front, with oil held in the seat ‘cowl.’ Custom upholstery from Atelier Cherry adds to the period-correct look.
Double Trouble’s finished off with a narrow set of custom drag bars, with a 1970s H-D tacho out front. The bodywork’s been left raw, with tidy Hot Chop Speed Shop decals on the tank. Buttoned up, it’s both elegant and monstrous. [More]
Hazan Motorworks Max Hazan’s work speaks for itself, but what’s remarkable is that the American builder’s had an unmistakable signature from day one. If you don’t believe us, then consider the fact that this Sportster-powered artwork was only his fourth build.
“I start with a motor that I find aesthetically pleasing, put it on the table, and build the bike around it,” Max told us back then. In this case, the motor is exquisite. Max built it up with two 1981 Ironhead front heads, split the rocker covers and added matching Amal carbs.
The frame was built from 7/8” and 1” steel tubes, and also holds the oil and wiring. The front-end’s a work of art on its own; it uses two springs under the fuel tank, and a damper behind the headlight. The only rear suspension is a pair of springs under the seat, with about 1.5” of travel.
Max had a set of 1920s car tires in his hands, so he built the bike up with a 30” wheel out front, and a 31” hoop at the back. They suit the scale of the bike too—which measures eight feet long, but weighs just 300 lbs.
Almost everything was fashioned by hand, using metal that was lying around the workshop, or, in some cases, small salvaged parts. There’s a frosted shot glass as a taillight cover, and a porcelain doorknob on the hand shifter. The handmade tank only holds 1.5 gallons… but Max is under no illusions about his creation having to be ridden far.
Eight years on, this Ironhead still stands as one of our favorite Harleys—nay, customs—and some of Max’s best work. [More]
HardNine Choppers The 1979 Harley-Davidson XLCR is arguably too rare to be customized these days, but the owner of this Sporty has three. So he had no qualms about handing one over to Swiss builder Danny Schneider for a makeover.
Danny, who operates as HardNine Choppers, is an ex-motocrosser who had previously built two Triumph flat trackers, and was itching to give a Harley the same treatment. So he took on the project with the provision that he could turn it into a tracker. Luckily, the client agreed.
Danny’s work went deep—starting with the motor that he bored out from 997 cc to 1,340 cc, with KB Performance pistons. The carb is from the Harley performance specialists, S&S Cycle, and the exhaust is a custom nickel-plated system that exits under the seat. Danny had to relocate the oil tank to accommodate it.
The custom fuel tank echoes the lines of the original XLCR unit, but it’s actually a slimmer, split design (the left side houses the oil). Danny hand-shaped an aluminum tail section too, with slits to help dissipate heat. He made the seat pad himself, too.
Suspension is by way of Showa shocks from an FXR, fitted with Öhlins cartridges, and Bitubo rear shocks. It rolls on 21F/16R spoked wheels, with a Beringer brake set that Danny drove to the French company’s HQ to have made.
This XLCR is a clever mix of classic style and modern parts, tied together with a host of custom touches and a fresh paint job inspired by a mini-bike spotted on the street (true story).
It’s also a great story of perseverance; Danny took a two-year break in the middle of the project to welcome his daughter into the world and battle testicular cancer. Then he crammed two month’s worth of 15-hour days in to finish it in time for the MBE Expo show in Verona, Italy. Much respect. [More]
DP Customs We’ve featured a slew of slammed and hot-rodded Harleys from the now-defunct DP Customs over the years, but this was one of their wildest. Brothers Jarrod and Justin Del Prado built it as a personal project between client jobs, using Justin’s own 1000 cc 1979 Ironhead Sportster as a donor.
DP Customs went all-out, starting with a turbo that had been sitting in the shop waiting for the right project.
The motor was rebuilt with forged pistons and new valves and springs, then the turbo was installed with a custom draw-through setup, and a Mikuni carb. From the custom aluminum intake and exhaust, to the custom oil system that runs into a Mooneyes tank, it’s an impressive setup.
Like three of the other Harleys on this list, this one features a scratch-built hardtail frame. It uses DP Customs’ signature 6” stretch and 4” drop, with a custom 19” wheel up front, and a modified 15” car wheel at the back. The front brake’s a Brembo, and the rear is a custom system with a combination sprocket and rotor.
Up top is a wafer-thin seat, with a traditional peanut tank up front. DP Customs installed clip-ons with Biltwell Inc. grips, and head- and taillights—but there’s no speedo, and no turn signals. The asymmetrical paint job, red frame and gold wheels should clash, but somehow they harmonize, maximizing the Harley’s eye candy appeal.
DP Customs admit the bike wasn’t built with practicality in mind, summing up that “it hauls ass in a straight line, and the brakes work.” [More]

Does Your Story Suffer from Exposition-itus
Exposition. What is it? What does it do? Exposition according to dictionary.com is a noun and the definitions that concern us are numbers 2, and 3. The act of expounding, setting forth, or explaining. And Writing or speech primarily intended to convey information or explain, a detailed statement or explanation.
Or in author terms. Info-dumping.
It is the opposite of action. Action being the dialog and actions that move your story forward.
Now, not all exposition is bad. In fact, there are going to be places in your book where information is necessary. However, if your exposition outweighs your action, it will slow your story down and turn off readers. Especially, if your exposition is in the beginning of your book. Especially since most exposition is in passive voice. A lot of times, I find exposition to be the author starting the story in their own head and explaining everything up to the point where the inciting incident starts, and then not realizing it’s exposition and not editing it out later.
So, here are 9 symptoms of exposition-itus, a readers perspective and in author terms b/c I also happen to be an author.
1) It reads like a history book.
In fact, it might as well be a history book, as the author has decided to spend so many pages on the historical and cultural facts that have brought us to this point in the story. This can actually be disguised as dialogue, where one character is telling the other character everything they need to know whether or not the reader actually needs to know about it or not. This can include things like background, family history, asking what is going on in the other character’s life, and so on and so forth.
Boring. Yawn. Especially if this happens in the beginning of the book. There is no interaction or action, reaction going on for us to care. These are words for the sake of words and the author needs to edit, figure out when or if this information is actually important to the story and then casually slide it in there.
2) It reads like a character sheet.
This is when the author, instead of relying on their ability to show us character traits, decides to tell us the traits of these characters instead.
In the Lone Prospect, I could tell you “Gideon was a man in his mid-twenties exactly (25), fresh out of a medical discharge from the military and wearing his worn out, too thin, farm clothes from his teens that strained against his adult physique. He loved his mother and didn’t want to worry her, but he and his father weren’t getting along. Thus, leaving Gideon looking for a new place to settle down. He was mildly optimistic about it. Oh. And he was a werewolf, so it made things a tad more complicated.”
Or, I can do what I did, wait until chapter three, have Gideon write a letter to his mother while interacting with a duck and hope I conveyed the same information in a way that doesn’t bore you to tears.
In telling us the ‘traits’ of the character, the author makes it doubly difficult on themselves on top of frustrating the reader. If you tell the reader the character is competent, sarcastic, and reckless, then you have to show it too or risk not having consistency in the book. Instead, know your character traits, keep them close to your chest, and simply have your characters act. That way the reader can determine them for themselves, and character consistency is maintained.
3) It reads like a scene summary.
So, you’re reading along in the story and there in the middle of what could be a good scene of character interaction is a paragraph about how there was character interaction because these are all great friends, really! But instead of showing you, the author instead has decided to tell you.
Which completely ruins the point of the reader figuring out these people are good friends.
Again, in the Lone Prospect, I have a scene I could have summarized. Gideon has just been accepted into the pack after a potluck dinner. This turns into a party. And I could have summarized the party; people having motorcycle races over here, the hand to hand combat spars over there, people dancing to loud techno-metal music over here, what is the pack doing with a military grade drop ship in a hangar? Oh wait. Instead, I turned it into a several page scene where you see this all from Gideon’s point of view and actually interact with people.
4) It reads like a list.
Description. It’s difficult. It’s especially difficult when you aren’t sure how to do it. So, authors will often resort to lists in order to get it out of the way so they can get on with the exciting bits, the story. Without considering how much or if the character their using as a point of view character is going to notice such things, or if the reader is going to care.
Most readers will not care about detailed descriptions of clothes. They just don’t. As a person trained if fashion, this is painful, but I’ve come to terms with it.
A list description reads like this, “Gideon was six foot even with light olive skin, short brown hair growing out of a buzz cut and two days worth of stubble, and golden brown eyes that were best compared to aged whiskey. No one gave a damn if he shaved anymore, so why bother. He wore a too thin white t-shirt straining against his military physical trained muscles, and stone washed jeans that were spattered with bleach spots and worn around the knees. His black combat boots were all he had left of his uniforms, outside a few tailor made dress blues he only got to keep because they were tailored, and a mess of ribbons and awards he didn’t give a damn about. The boots were broken in and comfortable and one of his two pairs of shoes. Thus, why he was wearing them with his jeans.”
There are better ways to work in description. This is boring. In fact, it’s probably not even relevant. I don’t think I’ve mentioned he’s six foot yet. I may have mentioned Savannah is 5’2”. Or just that she comes up to his chin and it amuses him.
5) It reads like the author is telling themselves the story up to this point.
Instead of opening with some type of action or dialogue, the story instead opens with a ramble of words about the location, the history, or the characters, or combination thereof. What I mean is, the author doesn’t jump straight into the scene, they are instead setting the stage a lah ‘it was the best of times, and the worst of times, on a dark and stormy night.’
Maybe you could get away with that a hundred or more years ago. You can’t today.
Get to the point.
(This is especially frustrating when you’ve had a decent straight to the point prologue and a chapter, and then chapter two or three we’re on our third hook and it becomes an author ramble.)
6) Passive voice. Passive Voice. Passive voice.
You might notice in most of the points about, there is a lot of the use of the verb ‘to be.” Or it sounds like a newspaper story where the author is rattling off the facts of the incident.
Usage of the verb ‘to be’ slows the story down. Telling us things. Summarizing things, instead of ‘speeding’ the story up, makes the reader feel like the author thinks we’re stupid and can’t read between the lines. (Yes, it’s better to show AND tell emotions. Like, I said, exposition isn’t always bad.) Or, the author simply doesn’t know how to write. Because why would you skip the fun, and yummy character interaction scenes.
Go through your manuscript. Find the verb to be, kill it without prejudice as much as possible. Look for summarization and flesh it out! Then, figure out if you really need that scene or is it a ‘darling’ and needs to be excised with fire. (Or lovingly saved into a separate document for later. Yes. Yes. My precious.)
7) It’s irrelevant to the story at hand…
Many times, when your story suffers exposition-itus. It’s because the information you’re explaining or giving is simply not relevant to the story right that moment. The reader doesn’t need to know the information to get full enjoyment out of the book. And the information given is more or less to show off their world building or sometimes to simply up the word count.
As an author, I recommend taking all your exposition and creating a world building document called a “bible.” This will put all the world building into one place, get the urge to explain everything out of your system, AND give you the benefit of seeing places your world building might be weak. Then you can while you’re writing be able to put the relevant information into the book as the reader and character needs to know it.
Especially if the character doesn’t know the information yet or can’t know the information.
OR
8) It answers all the questions the reader is asking.
This is where the author feels the need to explain everything. The character is in a new situation. So, there is another character who knows what is going on, but can’t get involved for ‘reasons’ training the character. So, the author tells the character and the reader all the information including motivations and enemy capabilities.
And, well, there is the entire book and mystery ruined.
That is only one scenario mind you.
Your job as an author is to set up questions about the character, and the world, and the situation. The character and the reader go on a journey to answer these questions. These mysteries keep the reader turning pages and buying the next book. If you answer these questions in the prologue, or the first five chapters, then the reader has no reason to keep reading the book.
9) The story isn’t moving forward.
One thing about exposition is it stalls the plot.
Your story is like being in an elevator. The scenes that move the story along are like the elevator moving between floors with the chapters being the elevator stopping and opening the doors to let people on and off. Exposition is the elevator stalling between floors.
You’re hanging there, precariously over a long shaft by wire cables, and the elevator has stopped without any way for you to leave as the soothing and yet aggravating music drones on and on. Eventually, you hope, things start moving again.
And so, when the elevator stops at the next floor, the reader gets off and refuses to get back on. Or if they’re really aggravated, they will figure out how to crawl out the top of the elevator and pry open the doors to get out.
Exposition is the ‘dead spots’ of your story. They’re places where the reader starts skimming hoping to get to the next bit of action or character interaction that is relevant. Exposition kills your tension and makes readers set down your book.
If anything, put exposition near the end of your book, “Dumbledore Explains” style or “Elementary, my dear Watson,” mystery style. By this point, you have your readers so invested into the plot of the story, they’ll be more likely to forgive you a momentary ramble or history lesson.
I know I have exposition at the end of the Lone Prospect about different types of motorcycle clubs. One. This is actually relevant information that given the book is about a motorcycle club, you the reader need to know. And two, I’m not planning on addressing it directly by showing the differences until book five! Three, Gideon needed to know this information as it influences his decision on if he’s going to stay or not.
So, I’m hopeful, as an author, you can forgive me for my ramble about motorcycle clubs in the form of Hunter telling Gideon a story. Well, Hunter and Brand because Brand had to get in on it.
Anyways, here are 9 symptoms of exposition-itus. I hope it helps. Please remember, your action ratio should always outweigh your exposition ratio by a large margin. Be precise and be concise. Especially in the beginning of the book where you’re trying to keep readers reading your story.

It’s Only a Game (Part 6)
A/N: This is completely AU now. Also, I am still heartbroken. In this universe, no one knew who the Brotherhood were and Colt and Ellie were the ones who tailed Kaneko to the factory for the drop in Chapter 8. I also thought that this was angsty when I started it, but nothing will ever top Chapter 13 in that department.
Pairing: Colt x MC
Rating: PG-13 (Swearing.)
Length: 3068 words
Summary: Everything falls apart.

Ellie tried to focus on the bolt in front of her but it was impossible. She had already made two mistakes on the car and really didn't want a third, but her brain was fuzzy. Toby was standing close by; he already had to save her when a pair of wires started smoking because she connected them incorrectly. He obviously didn't want to take any chances, which was smart, but Ellie's could not, would not focus. She desperately wanted to look away from the bolt, to peek, just one peek, but absolutely should not do it. This was the hardest test she had ever taken.
Two turns of the wrench left and, crap, she peeked. Colt was sitting on the floor next to his motorcycle, working on putting the parts together again, brow furrowed in concentration. Almost like he had the same problem, he glanced her way at the same time. She felt her cheeks redden and he winked at her, lips curving into a smirk. Her heart started beating faster and she could not wait for this evening to be over, for Logan to fall asleep, for her to sneak downstairs under the cover of darkness.
She didn't really understand it, when Riya and Darius started dating. Darius was all Riya could talk about or even think about; she had spent hours listening to every detail about their dates or his hair or their kisses. She attributed it to infatuation or hormones but oh, now she knew. She now knew that attraction and desire could be all encompassing and intoxicating and, even worse, she never wanted it to stop.
She managed to peel her eyes away from Colt and drop back down to the wrench. She could do this.
As she was settling back in to attack the bolt, there were three sharp knocks at the back door and it swung open. She heard a sharp intake of breath next to her and Toby dropped the screwdriver he had been holding, sound echoing around the now silent garage. She turned to the door and her heart dropped in her throat. Two LAPD uniforms were sauntering through the garage, leisurely looking around. She didn’t recognize them but stayed down, partially hidden behind the car; she knew that it was a bad sign that they walked right in.
Everyone else in the room seemed to be in shock. Colt stood up from his bike as Kaneko walked out from the office. They exchanged a tense look and Kaneko spoke first, calmly. “Hello, officers. Can we help you?”
The male officer nodded; big and burly, she could see the envelope in his hands. “Kaneko?”
Kaneko nodded. “That would be me.” He did not seem surprised by the sudden intrusion and continued calmly hobbling forward.
The officers shared a puzzled look, the female officer taking the envelope to squint at it. “Ah, no.....Colt Kaneko?” Ellie felt her heart drop and had to steady herself on the tire so she wouldn’t fall over. She felt Toby’s hand land on her arm, steadying her. They shared a terrified glance and she turned to Colt. His eyes were hard and she could see his jaw clench.
“Yeah?”
The officer nodded. “We’re going to need you to come with us.”
Colt raised his eyebrows. “Do you have a warrant?”
The officer handed over the envelope and Colt opened it, skimming the papers inside. Frowning, he put the papers back. “Can we do this outside?”
“Colt...” Kaneko widened his eyes.
Colt turned back. “It’s fine, Pop. It will be fine.” Ellie thought that she saw Colt’s eyes flicker to her but it was only a millisecond and then he and the officers were walking out the door.
The silence lasted for thirty seconds before Toby let out a loud “FUUUUUCK.” Everyone looked uneasily at each other.
Finally, Ximena spoke. “Boss? What do we do now?”
~~~~~
Apparently, the answer to that was clean. Kaneko had them cleaning the shop for hours and anything of...questionable legality was moved or destroyed. Ellie was physically and mentally exhausted; she could feel the blisters on her fingers and Logan’s bed, usually so comfortable, wasn’t soothing her sore muscles. However, she could not sleep. She knew, had known all along, that this was one of the hazards of this life. Not only did you need to avoid murderous gangs, but you also lived under constant threat of arrest.
She got out of bed silently, making sure Logan was still breathing deeply, and walked the familiar steps to the shop floor. There, she wandered aimlessly. She knew in her head that Kaneko was right. He had to convince her that it was an awful idea to try to see Colt in jail. Rationally, she knew that it would be a mistake; she was just having a hard time convincing the rest of her to sit and wait.
Silent tears rolled down her face as she passed by Colt’s motorcycle, wiping her face as she remember Colt, eyes cold, walking away.
Could she really do this? Now Colt and her dad were on opposite sides, completely opposite sides here, and she couldn’t possibly choose between them. She had this fantasy that everything would work out, maybe Colt would go straight, maybe the police really wouldn't care about the crew but, after today...
Maybe she was not only mourning Colt’s arrest but also the hope that she could thread the needle between her two lives and come out between them unscathed.
As she continued on her third lap of the floor, Kaneko walked out of his office. “Ellie.”
She turned to him, eyes wide. She hadn’t known he was there but it made sense that he couldn’t sleep either. She wondered if he had prepared for this day, if he had prepared for the possibility of seeing his son led away in handcuffs. She wondered if he blamed himself for this, if he would send Colt away again.
She looked at him, silent, for so long that Kaneko sighed. “Come in.” He gestured back into the office and turned, slowly padding back through the door. Ellie followed, heart in her throat.
“Sit.” Kaneko had turned to some papers in front of him, jotting notes and numbers that she couldn’t read. “Trouble sleeping?”
She nodded, focused on the bags under his eyes. “You too?”
Kaneko looked at her, sharply. “He knew the risks.”
“Yeah....” Ellie trailed off, looking out the side window. The world was dark, the quiet weighing on her.
“He knew the risks and he knows what to do.” Kaneko caught her eyes. “You can’t do anything stupid. You can’t help him now.”
Ellie sighed. She really wasn’t planning on doing anything, she just... “I just feel so powerless.” Tears started to form, the tightness in her eyes a familiar ache now.
Kaneko dropped his pen on the deck and studied her. For a while. She felt herself wilting under his gaze and sat on her hands so she wouldn’t fidget. Finally, he nodded. “Come to my office. 6pm. Tomorrow. Exactly on time.”
She raised her eyebrows but didn’t question him; she felt like she was being dismissed from the principal’s office. Finally she nodded and turned to go.
“Don’t be late.” He called after her, turning back to his work.
~~~~~
At exactly 5:59pm, Ellie stood outside Kaneko’s door and knocked. He quickly opened it and ushered her inside, closing it firmly behind her. Without a word, he turned back to his papers. Ellie hovered for a second, unsure of the protocol, then sat down across from him. A clock in the corner ticked. One minute went by. Two. Three. Finally, Kaneko broke his silence. “One more minute.”
Ellie watched, amazed, as, true to his word, sixty seconds went by and then his telephone rang.
“Hello.” Kaneko put his pen down and cradled the phone in his ear. She couldn’t hear who he was talking to.
“Any new information for me?” He nodded, frowning. The wrinkles on his forehead looked more pronounced. Maybe it was just the lighting in the office...but maybe Colt’s absence was hitting him as hard as it was her.
“There is someone here who wants to talk to you.” Kaneko turned to her and handed over the phone, going back to the paperwork.
Ellie took the receiver gingerly. “Hello?”
“Ellie?!?” Colt’s voice hit her like a wave of cold water and she felt tears spring to her eyes.
“Colt, are you ok? Oh my God, Colt.”
She could hear his sharp intake of breath, a slow exhale. “Ellie, I can’t really talk where I am.” It sounded slightly muffled, like he was covering his mouth. “I’m fine. How are you?”
“How do you think I am? What are they charging you with? Do you have bail? What’s going on?”
He sighed, slow to answer. “Ellie, it’s fine....don’t worry. I should be back in a couple days, ok?”
“Colt....” the tears had started to spill out of her eyes and onto her cheeks. She thought of how lucky she had been, when he was here, to be able to touch him, secret stolen moments that she thought would never end. Now, she ached to even see him.
“Ellie, I’m ok, I swear, but I can’t talk where I am. I only have a minute left, will you look out for my dad for me?”
“Of course...”
“Ellie...” the phone was muffled again and he was whispering, hard to make out over the line, more breath than speech. “Ellie, I miss you.”
“Colt.....” The tears were falling fully now, she couldn’t stop them if she tried.
~~~~~
Colt laid, uncomfortably, on the thin mattress. His conversation with Ellie had thrown him and he couldn’t really afford not to be on his game. His dad had mentioned this possibility and he knew the general plan if something like this ever happened, but thinking about it and living it were two different things. It was hard not knowing what was happening at the shop, if Pop was staying safe, if Ellie was ok. He wondered if this was the straw that broke the camel’s back and whether she would even be there when he got out.
Colt sat up as keys came down the hall again. He could not afford to get distracted. “Kaneko?” He stood. He had been expecting this since he got here. His dad’s lawyer said that they could only keep him for three days without officially filing charges, but to expect multiple conversations, interrogations into his dad, the shop. Might as well get this over with. He would never give up his father, regardless of the offer on the table.
He was walked down the hall and into the interrogation room. After a wait, a long wait, an interminable wait designed to make him reconsider all his life choices, finally, the door opened.
Two detectives walked in, one clutching a folder overflowing papers and a couple of glasses of water. “Colt? I’m Detective Shaw and this is Detective Foley. Sorry about the wait.”
Colt nodded. So this was the Good Cop. “No worries.”
Good Cop sat down, pulling a picture from the folder. “Hopefully we can get this cleared up really quickly. We just need some help from you and then you can go on your way.” Colt raised his eyebrows and waited. “Do you know what this is?”
Colt looked at the car. “A Maranello.” Of course he knew what that car was. He had stolen it from the owner of the LA Badgers and Mona had driven it to a storage container off an East LA highway. “My Pop owns a garage.”
Good Cop nodded. “It was actually stolen last weekend.” Colt looked at him. Waited. Waited more. “We think you know something about it.” Waited. The only sound was the clock in the corner, dulling clicking away the seconds of Colt's life. “Can you tell us about it?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Good Cop frowned. “Colt, you seem like a good kid. Made it into a good university. But your dad doesn’t exactly have your best interests in mind.”
“What does Pop have to do with this?” Colt sat as still as he could.
Bad Cop moved away from the wall, bending down in Colt’s face, arms huge on the table. “You know what your father has to do with this and you were in on it, kid. We’ve got you.”
Colt sighed, already bored. This looked so much more exciting on Law & Order. He tilted his head so he could look up at Bad Cop. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Bad Cop started and pushed a chair over, the clatter loud in the small room. “Stop the bullshit, kid.”
“Foley, enough.” Good Cop put his hands up, placating him. “Colt, you have to know that your dad doesn’t exactly run his business on the up and up. Three cars were stolen from a charity event. We have witnesses who place you there.”
“I’m not big on charity,” Colt shrugged and slouched down in his chair.
Bad Cop pushed the table, aggressive. “You and your friends lifted the cars because your dad doesn’t care about you or your future or if you end up a pathetic punk ass like him."
“Ok, this is ridiculous.” Colt sat back in his chair and looked at the ceiling. “I’m done here.”
“You’re done when we say you’re done.” Bad Cop banged on the table, spilling the water cups, and Colt felt his heart stop.
Drip.
The water, sliding across the table, had started to drip on the floor, echoing in the silent room.
Drip.
The anger came suddenly. Colt was no stranger to anger, to a fury that built in his blood and churned in his veins and grew and grew until his fists moved of their own accord. He knew anger but this, this....he had to take a breath, deeply, in through his nose. He couldn’t see the table, the detectives, he could see nothing but the red behind his eyes.
He knew that voice. He knew that fucking voice.
Drip.
Colt knew he had to keep his cool. He knew he couldn’t ball his hands into fists and come up swinging until the anger had morphed into bruised knuckles. He knew he couldn’t stand and bash the detective, the dirty dirty cop, couldn’t pummel his face in until the anger in his blood had cooled.
Drip.
He bit his tongue, tasting the blood pooling in his mouth.  He needed to keep his temper in check. He bit down harder. More blood. Metallic in his mouth.
That’s the fucker who hurt his dad. That motherfucking-
Drip.
He took a breath, then another. Swallowed the blood. Breathe in. Out.
Drip.
Drip.
Slowly, he turned to face the cop, dead in the eyes. He looked at the detective, Foley, was it? He looked at his features, memorizing his eyes, nose, cheek, mouth. Stared him down. The roaring in his ears was starting to subside.
Finally, he smirked. “What’d you say?”
Colt couldn’t say what happened in the rest of the interrogation. The beginnings of a plan to hit The Brotherhood where it hurt were starting to form in his mind. And, in jail, he didn’t have much to do, other than think.
~~~~~
“That’s me.” He signed the property retrieval form and grabbed his things, quickly looking through his wallet to make sure he had some cash. Phone was dead, but that was probably a blessing. For the seventh time in the last hour, he played through his moves in his head as he walked through the precinct, dodging multiple uniforms in the busy entryway, trying to get out of this godforsaken place. However, at the door, steps from freedom, he paused; he could tell that eyes were on him. Eyes darting through the lobby, he caught sight of a small room, surrounded by glass, probably used for questioning suspects or delivering bad news. An older man stood standing, staring straight at him, glaring, face filled the typical hatred he had come to expect from cops. Colt paused, taking in the badge around his neck, arms folded across his chest. Maybe it was the lead detective on his case?
After a quick double-take and a caustic salute, he stepped out the front door and blinked as he stepped into the sunlight, reorienting himself to the city.
Time to move. He ducked into a convenience store for a water to break his hundred and then hopped the bus, seven stops. Ducked into a door that looked like it was made solely of graffiti and ducked out with a burner. Bus again, more stops, out of the city. He stared out the window and wondered how far his thirst for vengeance would take him. Based on the boil in his blood, pretty damn far.
Once he got to the beach, it was deserted. Quiet cliff, no one for miles. Perfect. He pulled out the burner and dialed a number he knew by heart.
“Hello.”
He waited, listening to his dad’s footsteps walk through the shop, waited until he heard the door shut behind him.
“You missed our call yesterday.” His father chided him, but it was without heat.
“I had some thinking to do. We have 20 minutes on this phone.” His father listened, actually listened, as Colt went through what he knew and the plan he had come up with.
Once he finished, he heard his father sigh. “I’m not sure...”
“Do you have a better plan?”
Pop paused. “No. But how do you know who you can trust?”
Colt bit his lip. “...I have an idea.”
~~~~~
It took another bus ride, waiting for a connection, jumping on a new route, Jesus forever, and, finally, a short walk before he was in front of a squat house in a fairly nice neighborhood, a world away from Gramercy Park. He stopped to look around. A quiet road, well-maintained houses. He didn’t know what he expected.
Hands in his pockets, he made his way up to the door and knocked. Mere seconds later, he heard quick footsteps hurrying over; the door opened and he found himself looking into a familiar pair of very suspicious eyes. The two considered each other for a minute until, finally, Colt spoke, “I need help.”
The door opened wider and Colt stepped inside.
150?!
150: ‘Are you shamelessly flirting with me?/ Is that a problem/ Absolutely not, you may proceed.’
——
The Way Things Work
Betty Cooper had worked at the garage for as long as she could remember. When she was 5, she would sit outside, listening to her dad fix her bike. When she was 8, she would make lemonade for them both, as he taught her about the insides of their car engine. When she was 13, they started exploring the machine together, Betty helping whenever she could. Then she started working at the garage, becoming friends with everyone else.
Sweet Pea was a few years older than her but always looked out for her: he was the brother she never had. Toni looked out for her too, excited that she finally had another girl at the site. Fangs would mess about with her most, they were like two peas in a pod.
That didn’t mean to say she wasn’t friends with Northsiders. They loved her too. Veronica Lodge being her bestfriend, Archie Andrews and Kevin Keller also adding to the odd bunch.
Betty loved all her friends. In different ways. For different reasons.
Who they were or where they came from had no significance to her friendships. She treated them as equals, which they were, and by her doing this she earned the respect of the whole town.
Betty Cooper was everyone’s favourite darling.
Of course such a famous, prestigious role in society doesn’t go without consequences. Such included being hit on, way too many times.
It wasn’t always a bad thing.
But sometimes it was, and luckily she was strong enough to defend herself. And it was always reassuring to have Fangs’s strong arm wrapped around her shoulder, or Toni’s defiant stand mirroring her own, or Sweet Pea’s switchblade made apparent to the offender.
The last one made her chuckle.
Sweet Pea had left early for a date with Veronica; Fangs was not working today; and Toni was ill, so Betty had the garage to herself. She didn’t mind. In fact, sometimes she took pleasure in it. Surrounded by so many beautiful vehicles, engines just waiting to be heard and listened to, Betty enjoyed having this private time to herself.
But when the loud, thumping beat of a motorcycle was heard by the empty garage, Betty looked up to find herself stunned. She tried to peel her gaze away from the leather-covered stud, with gorgeous ivory hair falling down onto his olive-tone face perfectly as his slender hands came to brush the ignorant curl out of his piercing blue eyes.
Piercing blue eyes that caught her own.
And encouraged a smug smirk to rise on his face.
She looked away, suddenly embarrassed for some reason.
It wasn’t like Betty Cooper to be embarrassed.
He was walking towards her, but she didn’t look up, pretending to be so indulged in whatever was under the car hood. She couldn’t concentrate but she had to pretend to be.
By her not looking at him, she missed the way his teeth tugged at his bottom lip and he swallowed nervously before approaching her.
She was aware that her denim-shorts fit nicely on her toned legs, and white tank revealed her smooth skin.
“Firebird?”
He has the voice of an angel.
“Third generation.”
“‘82?”
She looked up in surprise, smiling as she brushed a loose lock behind her ear with the back of her hand, “Yeah.”
He returned the smile. “Problem?”
“Leaking throttle body gasket. Tightening down the carburetor or throttle body mounting bolts should stop the leak so it will be okay.”
He nodded, like he understood, but somehow she doubted he did, “You sure know a lot about this stuff? You work here or something?” He asked like he didn’t already know.
She raised her eyebrows before returning to her previous position, bending over into the car. “Yeah, something like that.”
As he ran a hand through his hair, she could tell he was trying to think of a smooth line so she interjected for him, “What’s wrong with your bike?”“What? Oh no, my bike is fine.”
“Then what are you…”
“Doing here? Right. Yeah…that…”
She rubbed her hands on her cloth, placing down her tools at the same time. Walking over to his bike to inspect it, he followed behind her.
“No it’s okay. It’s perfectly fine. I just…”
After running her hand along the handlebar, she looked up to see him staring blankly at her.
Did he not want her to touch his bike? If not, why didn’t he say something?
He didn’t.
He shook his head and started again, “Okay. I’m going to start again. Right. I’m Jughead, and I’m terribly in love with you I’ve come to the garage a few times, mainly to…I don’t mean this creepily at all, but mainly to see you. So I know that you work here and you’re the best by far and everyone loves you dearly. I think you are just…gorgeous. Like it’s insane. Oh god. I’m just rambling now. Feel free to stop me. Did I just say you are ‘just’ gorgeous? I didn’t mean it like that. I know there’s so much more to you. Well I don’t, but I’d love to find out. Oh dear. I’m not exactly the ‘smooth’ type but here goes…” He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath.
He opened them to see her giggling at him. Any other circumstance, he would have been agitated, but her giggle was so cute he couldn’t help but grin stupidly. If his rambling could make her giggle, how would she react if he was actually trying to be funny?
“What?”
“Were you…were you trying to shamelessly flirt with me?”
He grimaced, “Is that a problem?”
“Absolutely not, you may proceed.” Her eyes urged him on more than anything else, with that sparkle indicating that she was intrigued and excited.
“Alright. How’s this?” He started reading from his hand. “All these sick wheels here, yet still the only one I want to take for a ride is you. Wait. No. Oh my god. No. Sorry. Okay let me try this one. So many tools-Nope, definitely not that one.”
It was adorable that he was so nervous about asking her out that he had pre-planned pickup lines scrawled across the back of his hand.
She was cracking up as he attempted terribly to impress her.
He could do this all day as long as he got to watch her smile light up the whole world.
“Alright. Alright,” she was clutching her stomach with one hand, and her other on his arm to stable her balance, “Stop. I’ll go out with you, fine, just stop.”
Mirroring her grin, he huffed successfully, “Alrighty then. I’ll pick you up when you get off.”
She quirked an eyebrow, “What? Here? And how do you know when I finish?”
He smiled sheepishly as she shook her head, smiling to herself.
“No, not here.” She grabbed a pen out of her pocket and took his hand, smiling at the tingling sensation she felt with his smooth, slender fingers, sitting hesitantly in her other palm as she inscribed her number into his skin.
New tattoo maybe?
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Jug.
”Call me when I finish, and I’ll give you my address,” she winked.
When she finished writing, she didn’t move her hands away, but instead looked up at him to see him looking at her. His eyes were already full of this admiration that she knew she couldn’t get sick of seeing. She found his fingers interlocking with her’s as smiles tugged at their lips and an adorable blush crept up onto his cheeks.
Finally she broke the intent gaze, and retrieved her hand, as a customer walked into the garage calling for her.
“Alright, see you at 7!” He called, turning to face her as she headed in.
She looked back over her shoulder, “By the way, you have faulty wire grounds.”
His mouth dropped and he looked at his bike, but when he looked back at her, she had gone inside the garage to meet the customer.
Grinning stupidly, he couldn’t help but feel giddy, despite this new piece of information.
Betty Cooper was going on a date with him and he could not have been more ecstatic.
How incredible, how amazing, his bad flirting seemed to win her over. The way things work can be simply miraculous.
A story to tell the grandkids for sure: ‘He won me over with his terrible pickup lines.’
Oh and he got that tattoo.
Walker wins a dramatic Race 1 at Silverstone
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mounsey and Crosby complete the podium as Saturday sees a huge shake-up, with drama from start to finish The penultimate round of the Honda British Talent Cup promised it could be pivotal, and after a dramatic Race 1 at Silverstone that may already be proved half true. As drama hit for key contenders for the crown, it was Ollie Walker (Moto Rapido / SP125 Racing) who came through to take his first win, getting some deserved reward for running at the front after late heartbreak in a few recent rounds. Second was another first as Sullivan Mounsey (iForce Lloyd & Jones) stood on the rostrum for the first time after another standout ride, with Harrison Crosby (Banks Racing) taking his second podium in third place once the dust settled in the wake of the shake-up. It started with what's become the standard at lights out as Johnny Garness (City Lifting by RS Racing) took the holeshot from pole, with Casey O'Gorman (Microlise Cresswell Racing) slotting into second and an early breakaway forming as the duo were joined by Mounsey, points leader Evan Belford (City Lifting by RS Racing), Carter Brown (City Lifting by RS Racing), James Cook (Wilson Racing) and Jamie Lyons (C&M Motors Ltd / Tooltec Racing). It didn't take long for that first bout of huge drama though. Heading into Maggots, Lap 3 saw Belford suffer a moment and the points leader tagged closest competitor O'Gorman as, shockingly, both the top two in the standings went down. Riders ok, but the door suddenly wide open for those on the chase to capitalise. So then there were five, with Garness leading with a small margin by the next lap around. But he wasn't allowed to escape and the chasers soon closed in, with someone else closing in too: Walker. He and Crosby were on a charge and well in the mix in the front group by a third of race distance run. On Lap 8, more drama. Cook overcooked it right after taking the lead, the number 34 sliding out and losing his shot at glory. The group that had gone from seven to five to seven again had become a six-rider freight train - with Mounsey in the lead. Lap by lap, so it remained. A classic group battle between the six looked set to roll on right to the end and that it almost did, although Lyons and Crosby lost a little touch with the front four in the last few laps. but even more drama was to come, with Saturday delivering an absolute rollercoaster. Heading over the line to start the final lap, it was Garness in the lead and Brown fighting off both Walker and Mounsey. But Brown was able to tag back onto the leader and by Luffield, he was close enough to attack - and went for the outside. Locked together initially, there was then contact as the number 74 tagged Garness and it was Garness was forced to sit it up and run on, the number 57 out of the race. In the aftermath of that, Walker and Mounsey swept through to finish 1-2, both putting in their best races yet and hitting some impressive milestones - having been right there in the battle throughout. Brown crossed the line in third after that final drama of the race, seemingly having made some big gains, but the final final drama of the day was still to come for the number 74. For the incident with Garness, he was given the equivalent of a Long Lap penalty, a three-second time penalty, and drops to fifth - losing the chance to gain a much bigger chunk of points. The duel between Crosby and Lyons went all the way to the wire and became the fight for third after the penalty for Brown, and the number 15 just took it by 0.075. So Lyons is forced to settle for fourth, and Brown completes the top five in the classification. Sixth saw Troy Jeffrey (Stiggymotorsport) hold off Harley McCabe (MLav VisionTrack Academy) by half a second, but both impressing and Kiyano Veijer (Microlise Cresswell Racing) likewise as the Dutch rookie took P8. Josh Bannister (Dunsley Heat Racing) took his best finish by far in ninth, beating Harrison Dessoy (Thorneycroft56 Racing) by just 0.046 as he, in turn, held off Lucas Brown (Amphibian Scaffolding / SP125 Racing). That's a wrap on an incredibly dramatic day at the Silverstone National office, with Belford still ten points ahead of O'Gorman in the standings - but Brown now just a single point further back in third. Will Sunday be another rollercoaster for the BTC? Find out at 14:20 (GMT +1) as the lights go out for Race 2! Understanding Auto Parts
The basic idea of a car is pretty simple  turn wheels to pull you down the road. But, as illustrated by the hundreds of individual parts for sale at your local Pep Boys, AutoZone or Napa Auto Parts, it actually takes a lot of machinery to make cars work.
If you're trying to figure out what all the parts in your car do, HowStuffWorks AutoStuff is the place for you. Here's a collection of our key car part articles.
Engine System
How Car Engines Work
It's the reason you can put the pedal to the metal and go from zero to 60 in about 8 seconds. The car engine is a piece of engineering genius and one of the most amazing machines we use on a daily basis. Learn how the four-stroke internal combustion engine works.
How Diesel Engines Work
Ever wonder what the difference is between a gasoline engine and a diesel engine? Diesels are more efficient and cheaper to run than gasoline engines. Instead of using carburetion or port fuel injection, diesel engines use direct fuel injection. Find out what else makes diesel engines different!
How Hemi Engines Work
The HEMI engine has an awesome design and great performance, and it's pretty unique in operation. With the revitalization of the HEMI in the 2003 Dodge trucks, industry and consumer attention is once again on this interesting configuration. Check out how the HEMI works and see what makes it different from the typical engine design.
How Rotary Engines Work
A rotary engine is an internal combustion engine, but it's not like the one in most cars. Also called a Wankel engine, this type of engine performs intake, compression, combustion and exhaust in a different part of the housing. Learn about the unique rotary setup and how it compares performance-wise to a piston engine.
How Radial Engines Work
Radial engines reached their zenith during WWII. But today they are not that common. One place where you can still see the radial engine's influence is in the two-cylinder engine of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. This remarkable engine can be thought of, in a way, as two pistons from a radial engine. Find out about radial engines.
How Quasiturbine Engines Work
The quasiturbine engine takes the Wankel concept and improves on it: Instead of three combustion chambers, it has four, and the setup of a quasiturbine allows for continual combustion. That means greater efficiency than any other engine in its class. Learn about the quasiturbine and why it might be the most promising internal combustion engine yet.
How Camshafts Work
The camshaft has a huge effect on engine performance. It helps let the air/fuel mixture into the engine and get the exhaust out. Learn all about the camshaft and how a new one can radically change an engine's behavior.
How Superchargers Work
Since the invention of the internal combustion engine, automotive engineers, speed junkies and race car designers have been searching for ways to boost its power. One way is by installing a supercharger, which forces more air into the combustion chamber. Learn how superchargers can make an engine more efficient.
How Turbochargers Work
When people talk about race cars, or high-performance sports cars, the topic of turbochargers almost always comes up. Turbochargers use some very cool technology to make an engine more powerful, but the concept is really quite simple. Find out how turbos increase the speed.
How Fuel Injection Systems Work
The last carburetor-equipped car came off the assembly line in 1990. Since then, fuel injectors have been the primary means of getting gasoline into the engine cylinder so it can combust and you can drive. Find out how fuel-injection systems work.
Power Train
How Manual Transmissions Work
If you drive a stick-shift car, then you may have a few questions floating around in your head. Have you ever wondered, "What would happen if I were to accidentally shift into reverse while I am speeding down the freeway? Would the entire transmission explode?" Find out all about manual transmissions.
How Automatic Transmissions Work
Automatic transmissions take the work out of shifting. A truly amazing mechanical system, the automatic transmission in a car accomplishes everything a manual transmission does, but it does it with one set of gears. Learn how the whole setup works.
How Clutches Work
You probably know that any car with a manual transmission has a clutch -- it connects and disconnects the engine and transmission. But did you know that automatics have clutches, too? Learn how the clutch in your car works, and find out about some interesting and perhaps surprising places where clutches can be found.
How CVTs Work
In a regular transmission, the gears are literal gears -- interlocking, toothed wheels. Continuously variable transmissions, on the other hand, don't have interlocking gears. The most common type operates on a pulley system. Learn all about the smooth-operating, ultra-efficient CVT.
How Differentials Work
Without a differential, the driven wheels (front wheels on a front-wheel drive car or rear wheels on a rear-wheel drive car) would have to be locked together, forced to spin at the same speed. Find out how this essential component allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds.
Braking System
How Brakes Work
A car's brakes are probably the most critical system on the vehicle -- if they go out, you have a major problem. Thanks to leverage, such as AUDI VW headlight level sensor, hydraulics and friction, braking systems provide incredible stopping power. Find out what happens after you push the brake pedal.
How Disc Brakes Work
Disc brakes are the most common brakes found on a car's front wheels, and they're often on all four. This is the part of the brake system that does the actual work of stopping the car. Find out all about disc brakes -- even when to replace the pads.
How Anti-lock Brakes Work
Stopping a car in a hurry on a slippery road can be challenging at best and at worst, very, very scary. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) help alleviate the danger. Learn how anti-lock brakes prevent skidding, check out what that sputtering is and find out how effective they really are.
How Power Brakes Work
Power brakes are fairly ingenious machines -- they let you stop a car with a simple twitch of your foot. The concept at the heart of the power braking system is force multiplication -- a whole lot of force multiplication. Get inside the black cannister that provides the power.
How Master Cylinders and Combination Valves Work
We all know that pushing down on the brake pedal slows a car to a stop. We depend on that every day when we drive. But how does this happen? The master cylinder provides the pressure that engages your car brakes. Learn how the master cylinder works with the combination valve to make sure you can brake safely.
Steering, Suspension and Tires
How Steering Works
When it comes to crucial automotive systems, steering is right up there with the engine and the brakes. Power steering systems make the job a whole lot easier, and the internal workings are pretty cool. What happens when you turn your car is not as simple as you might think. Find out all about car steering systems.
How Car Suspensions Work
All of the power generated by a car engine is useless if the driver can't control the car. The job of a car suspension is enormous: maximize the friction between the tires and the road surface, provide steering stability and ensure the comfort of the passengers. Learn how car suspensions work and where the design is headed in the future.
How Tires Work
In the market for new set of tires? All of the different tire specifications and confusing jargon the tire sales clerks or "experts" are shouting at you making your head feel like a tire spinning out of control? Find out all about car tires, including what those sidewall symbols mean!
How Self-inflating Tires Work
Self-inflating tires perform two crucial functions: They automatically maintain ideal tire pressure for safety and performance in standard conditions, and they allow the driver to alter psi on the fly to adjust to changing terrain. Learn how self-inflating systems like the Hummer's CTIS work.
How Sequential Gearboxes Work
Combine the ease of an automatic with the driver control of a manual, such as a window switch, and what you've got is a sequential manual transmission. Instead of having to navigate an H pattern, a simple forward push advances the gear. It's the transmission used by race cars and an increasing number of high-performance street cars. Learn all about the sequential gearbox.
How Torque Converters Work
Cars with automatic transmission parts have no clutch that disconnects the transmission from the engine. Instead, they use an amazing device called a torque converter. Find out all about the torque converter.
Electrical System
How Wires, Fuses and Connectors Work
Wires, fuses and connectors - they may sound like the most mundane parts on your car, but they are essential. Yeah, they help keep the tunes going for a long ride, and they make reading that map at night a lot easier. But, they're also necessary for things like the cooling fan in the engine and your anti-lock brakes. Learn why wires, fuses and connectors are so important!
How Ignition Systems Work
A car's ignition system is the key component that helps the engine produce maximum power and minimum pollution. Find out how much is riding on a well-timed spark.
How Car Computers Work
Cars seem to get more complicated with each passing year. Today's cars might have as many as 50 microprocessors on them. Essentially, you're driving around in a giant computer. Learn all about the various computer systems that control your car.
How Windshield Wipers Work
Without windshield wipers, a rain storm would make cars pretty much useless. What began as a hand-cranked system is now automatic, including auto switch and headlight switch, and only getting more so: There are now some windshield wipers that can actually sense rain. Learn the mechanics behind this essential automotive tool.
Exhaust System
How Catalytic Converters Work
A catalytic converter is one of the most important parts of a car's emissions control system. It treats the exhaust before it leaves the car and removes a lot of the pollution. Learn how catalytic converters reduce pollutants and help you pass the emissions test.
How Mufflers Work
Every car out there has a muffler -- it performs the crucial job of turning thousands of explosions per minute into a quiet purr. Mufflers use some pretty neat technology to dim the roar of an engine. Learn about the principles that make it work.
Other Car Parts
How Odometers Work
Mechanical odometers have been counting the miles for centuries. Although they are a dying breed, they are incredibly cool inside. Learn how this simple device tracks distance and find out about digital odometers.
How Cooling Systems Work
A car engine produces so much heat that there is an entire system in your car designed to cool the engine down to its ideal temperature. In fact, the cooling system on a car driving down the freeway dissipates enough heat to heat two average-sized houses! Learn all about fluid-based cooling systems.
