This is a drawing of Richard Allen, The founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The drawing is found on the link to the  National Portrait Gallery. The image shouldn’t be published without the owner’s permission. So I am running afoul. The owner is named as Dorothy Porter, and I strongly supspect it is Dorothy Porter, a Black woman pioneer in library and information science, created an archive that structured a new field. She passed away in 1995.
I love Black History Month. It’s great that lots of people share links and stories. I feel encouraged to seek out answers to questions and to follow my curiosity. Efforts to supress “difficult” history neglects the joy in discovering connections.

For whatever good it will or won't do, the link to contact the Smithsonian NPG and complain:
https://npg.si.edu/contact-us-0
If nothing else it's a way of indicating opposition
the david zwirner gallery and the felix gonzalez torres foundation in the smithsonian removed the descriptive plaque for portrait of ross in la by felix gonzalez-torres. the old plaque explained portrait for ross' origins as the artist's partner's aids related death, and replaced it with a plaque with absolutely no information about the piece itself, who ross was, or who gonzalez-torres was either. portrait of ross was also reeranged to lay on the floor long ways instead of in a pile as it typically is situated, and the plaque outside the exhibition FOR GONZALEZ-TORRES omits his sexuality, as well as his aids related death. i'm in utter disbelief

A) The artist of my chosen work, Alice Neel, born in 1900, mainly painted portraits of all types of people.
B) She didn't gain notoriety in the art world until her seventies.
C) It took Alice Neel five years to paint my chosen work, called Self Portrait, and was completed in 1980.
D) This work was only one of two self portraits painted by Alice Neel.
E) The highest price of this work at an auction was 3 million dollars back in 2021.
3. Yes, the way I thought about this work initially is vastly different than how I think about it now. At first, I thought it was rather sad and melancholy, but learning that Alice Neel made this work in response to her late success made me feel happier about it. It shows that growing older doesn't have to be something to fear but to celebrate. And yes, I didn't notice the paintbrush in her hand in the picture at first.

The Wet-plate Collodion-
This particular style of portrait making is an over hundred-year-old method. Originating in the 1850s and 1860s, this style of photography is making a comeback in the last decade. Kelly Anderson is one of these artists bringing back the method and showcasing it in her own work. this method consists of a long exposure time needed in order to create a tintype that the sitter can remain still so a sharp image can be produced.
this method causes the subjects to remain in a transfixed neutral expression, reminiscent of those of the 19th century. This takes away the modern style of smiling for a photograph as the images need more time to capture the fine details of the subject's face.
Anderson-Staley creates her method of wet-bough by mixing and pouring the emulsion for each plate on the shooting site a little before the portrait is created. This method of hand-coating each piece leaves behind embedded traces of the maker in the final image.
Anderson-Standley states that her upbringing deeply influenced a lot of her early photography. One example was her first book, "Off the Grid" based on her childhood home. This book focuses on families who live without the modern-day amenities in Maine. This interest in people is what drove her to work in portraiture.
Tumblr media
as stated by Anderson-Staley when asked about the evolution of her work
"I used to focus more on narrative-based photographic projects, but my work is now more conceptual. I like both modes, and I think photography is well-suited to both, but I like projects that make photography the subject of inquiry as much as the vehicle of it."- Keliey Anderson-Staley
Anderson's work is well executed and stunning to look at, as she has not only mastered the art of portrait photography but also a hundred-year-old method of taking said portraits.
