Harlem's Renaissance in Paris: A network of African American women in Paris enriched the interwar blossoming of Black culture known as the Harlem Renaissance. French society was by no means colorblind, but it lacked the segregation policies of the United States. In Paris, American women of color felt liberated from the double burden of racial and gender-based discrimination. They were free to study at the city's many art academies and private studios and to show their work in prestigious exhibitions. Writers thrived in an environment that seemed far more egalitarian than the one at home.

“Figuring History” by Robert Colescott, Kerry James Marshall, Mickalene Thomas is a phenomenal collection of contemporary black art you should check out, says STOOP 55.
“…three generations of contemporary American artists, whose work challenges a Western painting tradition that underrepresents people of color. The vibrant and monumental paintings by these artists offer bold perspectives on Black culture and representation. Presented together for the first time, the figurative paintings of Colescott, Marshall, and Thomas are shaped by distinctive historic events, unique in style, and united in questioning the narratives of history through Black experience.”

British Baritone @PeterBrathwaite finds inspiration with #GettyChallenge: John Dempsey: Black Charley of Norwich (1823). From Dempsey’s extensive folio of British street people. Reworked with my red baby shoe. Black Charley was a boot and shoe maker/mender during the 1820s.
