for the last couple of months now ive been workin on reinventin my cyberpunk ttrpg NEON SPIRITS to be more evocative, more explicitly southeast asian, more in-line with my current politics and worldview and also just, more actual textual conveyance of the themes i originally wanted to impart. and part of that was a move away from the traditional 70s to 80s retrofuturist aesthetics that to late 90s to y2k retrofuturism
im far from the first to do it (ttrpgheads, go look up cybermetal 2012) but i realized another reason why i was drawn to the change, besides just the novelty. my primary aesthetic inspiration for NEON SPIRITS' setting is the congested concrete heart i grew up in, the filipino capital of manila, specifically my neighborhood in tondo. living here, u can sense a distinct *old-ness* in its tech culture that u only ever rly see in other parts of the philippines, & the global south more broadly
like some examples:
theres a piso-net near my house (if u dont know what that is, google it), and just a day or two ago, i saw a little kid there playing on one of the pcs; the graphic quality of the game told me it was absolutely made between the late 90s to early 00s. i remember watching on an old box tv and using a landline phone waaay into the 2010s until eventually we switched to a flatscreen and people stopped ringing up the landline. our living room cd-stereo is just collecting dust upstairs now, but we put that shit on play late into noynoys presidency. facebook, THE social media platform that ppl in the west see as for old people, continues to be the hotspot for social media activity in the ph; young ppl have started gravitating to twitter in the last decade or so, but fb is still where we message and post and keep up on online announcements
advanced technology as a class barrier is extremely charted territory for the cyberpunk genre. but in ttrpg worlds, it tends to come in the form of "high tech is commonplace, but the even higher/cooler tech is only affordable to the wealthy"; very "everyones got a phone but only rich people have the iphone 15" kind of energy. it sorta has basis in reality, but its also a perspective that comes from a privileged position, primarily from countries at the core of the geopolitical economy
for countries that live out in the periphery of this economy, we r always the last to get new commercialized technology—even when a household has the kind of wealth to be in proximity to the core. were almost always the source for this tech—whether its the manufacturing materials stolen from our soil or the manufacturers themselves—but its always too expensive to proliferate here at the same time it does for the us or uk or spain or elsewhere in the global north
we hafta wait till it hits the bargain bin for us to actually use it; and by the time we do, its already out of date by a couple years (this is also why piracy is so frequent a practice here even among bougie families like mine)
#pissposting#ttrpgs#theres not rly an overall point to this#i just had a thought & followed it#i finally at least solidify the why behind neon spirits' new aesthetics

Situation in the Philippines and South Korea is getting hotter
Deja vu? This is the 21st century.
Whatever happened in the 20th century, happens today. Political crisis, territorial disputes, impeachment. You name it.
The situation in the Asia-Pacific region is getting hotter this time. Last Monday, there was an impeachment filed against Vice President Sara Duterte in the Philippines, for grounds like culpable violation of the constitution and betrayal of public trust. Last night, President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, attempting to stage a self-coup in South Korea, and is in a brink of an impeachment. Come on, the Philippines and South Korea are democratic countries and allies of the United States. Of course, these events send shockwaves all over the Asia-Pacific region and the world, making people ponder, "What the hell is going on? They seem to f*** up."
Not to mention the last six months, there was a political bickering between President Marcos and Vice President Duterte, while President Yoon continues to be unpopular amongst South Koreans. In the last two years when Marcos and Yoon took office, the situation the West Philippine Sea escalated day by day, while North Korea amended their constitution, treated South Korea as its number one enemy, and blown up key road that are connected between the North and the South.
You know what is interesting to me? It's how our leaders play these things by the book. It seems to me that the Philippines is playing in Noynoy Aquino's playbook, while President Yoon failed to play in the old Marcos' or Park Chung-hee's playbook.
And what is more interesting is that in 2016, when Donald Trump won his first presidency, Park Geun-hye was impeached and removed from office. Now that Trump won the second presidency, President Yoon Suk Yeol is in a brink of impeachment and removal.
Goodness us.

This is the Christmas Station ID of TV5 in 2014. The Christmas Station ID is themed “Krismas Mas Mas Masaya”.
The Christmas Station ID theme song was sung by Filipino OPM singer and songwriter Sarah Geronimo featuring OPM group Gimme 5 who are the backing vocals of the song.
The Christmas Station ID is led by Vice Ganda, Empoy Marquez, Coco Martin and Zoren Legaspi who are known as "The Taros Comedy Crew" from the TV5 sitcom show Banana Split. They are the genderbend versions of Arcee Muñoz, Ritz Azul, Alice Dixson and Eula Caballero who are the original cast members of Banana Split featuring Imee Hart, Iwa Moto and Sugar Mercado. But now, The Taros Comedy Crew is now a band consisting of Vice Ganda as the drummer, Empoy Marquez as the bassist, Coco Martin as the keyboardist or the keytarist and Zoren Legaspi as the guitarist. They resemble as “The Wiggles” but are more crazy than The Fresh Beat Band from Disney and the Imagination Movers from Nick Jr. The Christmas Station ID also contains special guests like Maine Mendoza, Gelli de Belen, Ogie Alcasid, Judy Ann Santos, Jodi Sta. Maria, Sam Milby, Bea Alonzo, Maja Salvador, Willie Revillame, Luis Manzano, Xian Lim, Enchong Dee, Matteo Guidicelli and DingDong Dantes who resemble as “The Backstreet Boys”, twin sisters Anne Curtis and Jasmine Curtis-Smith featuring Barney from Disney’s Barney and Friends, Kermit the Frog, Elmo and Big Bird from the Muppets who are created by Jim Henson, Wayne Allwine who is the voice actor of Steve from Disney’s Blues Clues, Frozen actors Will Smith, Robert de Niro and Freddy Highmore including president Noynoy Aquino.
Somehow, Other TV5 crew members are missing in the Christmas Station ID as well. Somehow, This is the only Christmas Station ID to feature the crew from ABS-CBN and GMA as special guests. But Ogie Alcasid, Luis Manzano, Xian Lim, Enchong Dee, Matteo Guidicelli and DingDong Dantes moved to TV5 in 2010. Otherwise, Sam Milby and Willie Revillame may have moved to TV5 in 2005 when it was launched in May 5, 2005. But other crew members like Gelli de Belen, Judy Ann Santos and Jodi Sta. Maria weren't from TV5.
The Christmas Station ID was recorded at the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong, Manila in November 30, 2014. However, Some of the clips are re-used in the Barney and Friends 35th anniversary Home Video special Sing and Dance with Barney when Barney appears on TV and makes magic to make it come alive featuring the music video of My Name Is by Vanilla Ice from Disney's Blues Clues and deleted songs like The Real Slim Shady and Without Me by Vanilla Ice in the 2002 movie Frozen which also have music videos in the DVD.
The Christmas Station ID will be re-used in 2015 with the new theme “Happy Ka Dito Ngayon Pasko!” but with minor changes and an explosion at the very end. Somehow, The Christmas Station ID will also include cameos like Rufa Mae Quinto, Julia Montes, Cristine Reyes, Dimples Romana, Alex Gonzaga, Roxanne Guinoo, Angelica Panganiban and Valerie Concepcion waving at the end.

Isaiah 47
You said, ‘I am forever—
the eternal queen!’
But you did not consider these things
or reflect on what might happen.
8 “Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure,
lounging in your security
and saying to yourself,
‘I am, and there is none besides me.
I will never be a widow
or suffer the loss of children.’
9 Both of these will overtake you
in a moment, on a single day:
loss of children and widowhood.
Revelations 18
“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.
3 For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,
and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”
Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.
In her heart she boasts,
‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;
I will never mourn.’
8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

Like Colony, Like Colonial Master: West Philippine Sea Vs. Gulf Of America
In 2012, then-Philippine President Noynoy Aquino boldly renamed parts of the South China Sea as the “West Philippine Sea,” as if sovereignty could be established with a simple administrative order. Over a decade later, a Google Maps search for WPS yields nothing but disappointment. Fast forward to 2025, and the world witnesses an eerily similar yet vastly different spectacle: U.S. President…

'And So It Begins’ Review: What do we do next?

While they were lamenting how the Marcoses successfully…

WPS II
After the Cold War, the U.S. switched from containment to encirclement, and not of Communism but of its rivals, namely Russia and China.
The Philippines and the U.S. were aware of China and Vietnam fighting over parts of the WPS back in the late 1980s, of Chinese incursions in the Kalayaan area during the mid-1990s, of Malaysia building up in the late 1990s, and so on, but did not act.
When Duterte became President, he thought that he could negotiate with China and thus receive alarmed reaction from the U.S. It didn't happen because the President that time was Trump, and Trump wanted the opposite: decrease military exposure and make those who need help pay.
Later, Duterte switched to the U.S. because he realized that Biden would become President, and Biden is like every U.S. President before him except for Trump: support the military industrial complex to "save" poor countries like the Philippines against tyranny. Duterte agreed to renew the VFA but demanded $16 billion for the last decade. Why? Because that's what U.S. allies like Pakistan received from the U.S.
Marcos, Jr., continued what Duterte did, but it didn't work because the U.S. was also forced to provide aid to Taiwan, Ukraine, and Israel to deal with rising conflict in Asia plus an ongoing one in Eastern Europe. Also, the U.S. knows that the Philippines has no one else to turn to--not even itself because of politicking and a weak economy--so it gave only $500 million. Taiwan, which is even richer than the Philippines, got $8 billion.
The Philippines has no one to turn to because it's a poor version of the U.S. and tied to other countries. For example, it's heavily dependent on exporting laborers to other countries and receiving remittances, and it's main source of that is the U.S. Its main investors are Britain, the Netherlands, and Singapore. Its main donor is Japan. Its main trading partners include the U.S. and China.
Finally, the U.S. has also been manipulating other countries, including those claiming parts of the West Philippine Sea. For example, it sells arms to Vietnam, which has the most installations in the WPS. One of the military allies of Vietnam is Russia. The country that mainly bullies Vietnam is China, but China is also its partner in oil exploration and other deals. And the country that bullied Vietnam in the past, leading to two million dead, is the U.S. Here's the punchline: the U.S. has the second-highest approval rating in the region in Vietnam, which is a Communist country.
Another example: Taiwan claims most of the West Philippine Sea (in fact, the "dash" claim by China actually came from the Koumintang). The main ally and arms supplier of Taiwan is the U.S., which is supposed to be an ally of the Philippines. But Taiwan has both the U.S. and China as major trading partners, and the U.S. won't recognize Taiwanese independence because it doesn't want to anger China, which is also a major trading partner.
Allies like the U.S. are dependent even on countries like China for munitions needed for ammo, and even on countries like Russia for things like uranium.
Anyway, this is something to think about everytime we try to attack China over the U.S., or the other way around, or argue that the Philippines should be independent, or that Duterte is at fault, or Marcos, Jr., or Noynoy, and so on. Chances are, even what we mean by negotiating and coming up with an "independent" foreign policy will be hard to explain if the U.S., China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and others know everything I just pointed out above.

This is the Christmas Station ID of TV5 in 2010. The Christmas Station ID was themed “Maligayang Pasko, Kapatid! In the Service of the Filipino”. The Station ID is accompanied with the Christmas version of “Para Sa’yo Kapatid” performed by Jose Mari Chan and Apo Hiking Society featuring Regine Velasquez. But somehow, Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez also performed the original version of the “Para Sa’yo Kapatid” in June 30, 2010.
The Christmas Station ID was launched in December 1, 2010 which is the same thing that the “Da Best ang Pasko ng Pilipino” music video was released from ABS-CBN.
