If you followed me for hxh i DO highly recommend checking out tower of god. It’s its own story obviously & there’s nothing on the level of the chimera ant arc writing-wise yet but it scratches a lot of the same itches that hxh does (i.e. expansive intricate worldbuilding, good character writing, interesting power system etc). it’s fucking long (although so is hxh ig) but it’s a very fun read :)

Ok first of all: Yeah listen laimar doesn’t have a grip on me anymore but I still quite enjoy it! Just more passively… Altho I do have an analysis that focuses a lot on the importance they hold to each other in my early stage wips drafts, and listen in canon I do think they’re queerplatonic flavored, call me an ot3 qpr truther because Laios Marcille and Falin have a something going on and it transcends being put into a box. But hey hey I reblog laimar artworks I bought that recent doujin I put laimar fics in my -checks- 106 pages long to-read list… Also I have like 5 pages of fanfic prompts for them I may or may not get to writing. Though yeah I do feel bad whenever I notice people following after liking all my laimar posts haha

Laios goes to Marcille for love advice.  "You like someone?! Do I know them?" She eagerly asked. "Erm… Yes…?" // Post-canon. He’s so nervous and puts his foot in his mouth n lets things slip out that he thought would give him away. (Comic) "You like someone??! What are they like? Who are they?" And he’s like "Well… She’s a half-elf." He’s like shit she’ll probably know right away. And she goes still. "I’ve never met another half-elf!! We’re so rare! You’re saying you met one and didn’t tell me???!" She’s shaking him. And then she goes still again, contempt drawing on her face. "Wait… Are you asking me for advice because I’m a half-elf?" Laios runs with it "Yes!! And because you’re so savvy with romance and what people like…? If, uh, if you were a half-elf, what would you like to get as a gift? What sort of confession would you want?" "… You saved it there. Okay so since I’m so knowledgeable on romance, tell me what is she like?" "-describes Marcille-" She nods, smug yet oblivious. "Aah I can already tell we’d be great friends. Good taste." (then Thinking bubble with him giving her flowers at a restaurant "Did you know roses are edible and used in recipes", candlelit dinner, or wait maybe the most romantic is cooking together alone at home, chocolate! It’s expensive though… Wait I’m king now!)

Lil comic, Laios wakes up snuggled against Marcille’s back then promptly falls off the bed. The noise makes Marcille wake up and she’s like omg are u ok?? Laios is so sweaty and panicked and in denial about her being special to him.  She explains, disgruntled at the memory "Izutsumi is bunking in with Chilchuck again, they’re taking the whole bedrolls." Pause. "Sorry, I should have told you, but you like sleeping with Izutsumi too so I figured…" She looked sheepish. "Between you and Senshi, I much prefer sleeping with you. It feels sort of nostalgic, like a sleepover, no?" He relaxes and gets in the bed again, smiling. "But… We’ve never had a sleepover?" She chuckles "I guess not. I must be getting that impression because of Falin…" And the air between them is warm yet bittersweet now, as she smiles like that and his eyes and smile cloud over. The earlier instinctive reluctance to touch is gone now. She snuggles into his arms and is like "Hug me?" "Okay." And he does, wraps his arms around her and tucks his chin over her head.

Post canon, marcille takes him to a squid restaurant. Cute lighthearted hehe. He sulks "If there are any parasites in this I will ban squid from this kingdom or so help me…"

Short post canon fluff marcille pov about laios gaining weight n becoming chubby. She used to dream of chiseled abs and angular elves, laios in every way, shape and form is so far from the beauty standards she idealized so. And yet… She loves how soft sleeping against him is, how much there’s more of him for her to hug and nuzzle her face in. She loves seeing him and seeing someone strong, who isn’t malnourished or underweight, someone healthy with color in their skin. An healthy appetite. He used to look more like a rectangle, severe and strict, but now he looked rounder, and seeing him smile at her always made her feel like that roundness suited him. She smiled back, and melted thinking about how her boyfriend was the sweetest in the world. ^I still wanna do this one really bad. Sometimes a fic premise comes from nowhere and puts you in a chokehold and you must finish it to obtain catharsis

Dinner for two: Very warm. Marcille and Laios are meeting up and cooking a dinner just for them both, no one else is there. They’re being so domestic and it’s light. Laios pauses at some point, doing the dishes, saying… I’ve always worried, thinking doing things like these would remind me of my parents.

Laios doesn’t know what to do when he realizes he actually *likes* likes Marcille, so he avoids her. Everyone notices and is disapproving of him.

Her mana acts up and she shares her dream with someone, kinda like with Izutsumi. Listen the premise could be smutty but I think it’d be more fun if they just hanged out n were silly, like the nightmares chapter without the nightmare

Laimar pining but from the view of Chilchuck, his love hatred sensing a storm brewing. The giggling, the looks. Ugh! It reminded him of himself and his wife when they were young and newly dating.

I love Laios and Izu being worsties so. Laios sees izutsumi rubbing her scent on marcille’s clothes and gets possessive. Maybe Golden Kingdom maybe something else I have no clue but Laios being ridiculous and cheek rubbing or something <3

I might want to do an AU where Laios gets into werebeast ring fighting, before canon and the split happens after he deserts the military. So he’s alone, has nothing going for him and stumbles into that sphere and gets werebeast tattoos done. It doesn’t make him happier at all and fighting sucks actually, but it brings money and he likes being a beast and being cheered by a crowd aka illusion of being liked, and money brings food and eating is the privilege of the living etc etc. So then when he goes to check on Falin at the academy it’s a big AU where he has a whole other reputation and look to him, and when he meets izutsumi their relationship is different and aaaaaa… He’s freeer in this au, lets himself be animalistic and weird, even though ofc the arc is him letting himself be more human as well and connecting with humans, through talking and infodumping n shit. Oh I went off but the laimar is because it’s inspired by cool laimar art here (warning tho it’s an art dump with toudencest also 😔) but werewolf Laios laimar AUs… A lotta fun stuff there idk idk

Either way, it's made me think a bit more about the twins, and Poképhilia stuff in general as well! Like, the animosity some of these puppets have for each other!!!!! Some of them are just straight up Not Friends, lmao.

I need to play more of it, but if anyone is reading this, go play I Was A Teenage Exocolonist. I expected it to be waaaay more popular, especially on Tumblr, but it's so underrated? The writing is wonderful, the characters are well-defined, and the art is breathtaking! Please take a look at the trigger warnings, cuz there are a few that are definitely applicable, but it's soooo good... If it has to be said, I romanced Dys first, lmao.

I am watching The Apothecary Diaries right now, just started today, and can I jsut say... I'm such a fan of all the women in this show!! I love the perspective it gives on court life a lot! Maomao definitely is pulling in all the men AND women, huh.... i appreciate that. Jinshi also 100% wants to get degraded by her, huh. Maomao is the sexywoman of this show.

My favorite manga ended after 6 years of me following it, so y'all get to hear me ramble about how Falin from Dungeon Meshi and Noelle from Worm are counterparts. Major major major spoilers for Dungeon Meshi, just a warning. And Worm I guess, but I just kinda assume anyone seeing my posts knows about Worm.

So first off, super obvious comparison, they're both women who have had their lower halves replaced with a massive monster body that's a mishmash of multiple animals that is so large their human torso is dwarfed. Falin has a rather coherent feathery and scaled chimera body, and Noelle has a mass of meat and mouths and limbs that's constantly expanding. Both of them got this lower body through some sort of fucked up life-saving medical procedure too. Noelle was dying and needed to drink her vial to heal, and Falin was a completely deceased set of bones before Marcille revived her. Both of them immediately seemed better in the aftermath, only for the consequences of drinking half a vial/repurposing dragon flesh to regrow a human with dark magic to show themselves after a short period of relief. The two of them are both taken over by their monster half as well. Falin's soul is overwhelmed by the dragon soul and her orders now that she's part of the dungeon, and Noelle is slowly subsumed by her broken connection to her passenger that takes away parts of herself until she's a violent and aggressive mess with barely anything of Noelle left in her.

Noelle and Falin are also the heart of their groups. Noelle was the common friend among everyone in the Travelers, and Falin was was similar with her being generally friendly and very important to Laios, Marcille, and Shuro. Both groups immediately start looking for a way to save them, but I think it's rather interesting how the relationships strain in different ways. In Dungeon Meshi, when Falin died the adventuring party fractured. Namari and Shuro left, and Chilchuck only stuck around because he had been paid in advance, and when she was revived into being monstrous there was consideration of giving up. The adventuring group in Dungeon Meshi weren't really friendly at first with Falin gone, they were co-workers who argued and bickered and stuck together out of obligation. Marcille thought Laios was crazy, Chilchuck thought he was dumb, and Marcille and Chilchuck were often getting on each others nerves, but through their quest to revive and then to un-chimera Falin they all bonded and actually grew close and cared deeply about each other. The Travelers are similar, they were all friends before their wacky psychological body horror isekai, bar Cody and Krouse, but once the group was put under stress and the heart of the group in Noelle got her condition they began to grow apart. By the time we see them in canon, none of them really like each other and they all feel alone despite being in the group, but they remain because they don't have anywhere else to go and most of them care about fixing Noelle. Both groups go from being friends, to having something horrible happen to the common uniting factor in the group, to being strained and disliking each other. The difference is though, Dungeon Meshi has them grow to like each other beyond their bond with Falin, and they make new friends along the way, but the Travelers just become more and more resentful of each other and can never really bond with anyone else on Earth Bet. The groups have the same starting point, but they travel in opposite directions and reach opposite destinations. Noelle doesn't get cured, but Falin does.

This is a Dungeon Meshi post, so I have to make a comparison to food as well, I'm legally obligated to. Falin is saved by being consumed, with everyone coming together to eat her lower half, and it's a proper meal. Noelle though, she mindlessly consumes with no purpose. She feels a constant hunger and is sustained with insane amounts of meat, eventually consuming people as well. It's not a meal, it's not a way to spend time with others and appreciate the effort put into food, it's just consumption with no joy or meaning. It's an odd parallel. One of their monster halves eats, and the other is eaten.

Another fun little parallel is how the adventurers line up with the Travelers in some ways. Both groups do some pretty illegal shit in their quest to save their giant monsterified friend, but I think there's especially a fun line to draw between Krouse siding with Noelle when she was fully gone and rampaging and Marcille becoming the lord of the dungeon with saving Falin as one of her main goals, and then they both get sentenced to super mega turbo jail after it all. Marissa and Laios both get the fun little moment of "resolving to kill their former closest friend because she's completely gone, only for her to appeal to their bond," but Marissa incinerates Noelle anyway while Laios hesitates. Marissa also parallels with Marcille because both of them have massive codependent desperate crushes on their respective friends turned into mindless monsters, and Laios parallels Krouse in being a leader that the group often hates, there's a lot of ways to twist those 4 around and look at them for funsies. Beyond that there aren't really any easy parallels to draw between the group members. Cody could be Shuro because they both have a crush on Noelle/Falin that goes completely unrequited, and they fucking hate the leader of the group. Jess could be Izutsumi because they both resent their bodies and desire freedom. Luke and Chilchuck both want to leave the group when everything goes to shit, and retire from adventuring after the experiences. Oliver is Senshi because they're both eye candy.

Ultimately, I don't have a point here, I just think that it's nifty that I can draw so many connecting lines between these two groups in vastly different media. Its neat seeing how having the central member of a group be put through the horrors can either fracture or forge friendships, and I like how they both turn out in such vastly different ways despite the similarities. Rip Noelle you would have loved Dungeon Meshi.

Fun fact: I myself have been eyeing Kabru before properly watching Dungeon Meshi, suspecting that I might get a crush on him. But then shit happened, and here I am, obsessing over Thistle instead... Kabru is still cool, though. I especially love how the manga shows that him lying to manipulate people has consequences, so now he has to supress his honest emotions and do things he doesn’t want to do. It’s hilarious, I have never seen it done anywhere before.

(By the way, I’ve seen many people joke about being disappointed by Kabru being a man because they though he was a beautiful butch woman. Thoughts on that?)

so sorry to say… the cannibalism is mostly symbolic…. 😔 it’s like sentiments of “i want to eat you” and sexual biting and like. heavy cannibalism allusion used in smut. that kind of thing. kabru i think wouldnt be able to stomach survival cannibalism much less pleasure cannibalism like hes not that kind of guy. cath is a different story.

speaking of cath shes my s/i. her name is Catherine Entrailé she’s fantasy french (unfortunately, that was just too good a name…) and she’s a vulture beastman (were-vulture?). she can shift between human and vulture forms and was cursed to be this way (like izutsumi). she needs to turn fully into a vulture every so often or suffers consequences, she disappears from the party for a few days at a time and they notice a vulture following them, etc etc…

i havent decided who cursed her shes still a fledgling character. likewise i dont know how cath and kabru met (shes in his party) and suggestions would be appreciated lol. i am thinking of giving her a dead sister or something as backstory.

also, as backstory, she has past trauma from being poisoned, so she has to know EXACTLY whats in her food at all times. she eats carrion because its one flesh with no extra ingredients. this sets up conflict with senshi bc nooo why are you putting extra things in my food are you going to poison me!! so she’s like izutsumi bc they’re both picky eaters. she and izutsumi would either get along like a house on fire Or become lifelong mortal enemies. also there might be an arc there about growing past it because shes a vulture now and can digest many toxins without being harmed.

i think thats probably all i have for her for right now, hopefully i can come up with more stuff soon~ i know her dynamic with kabru, though. the reason why she’s in the dungeon is because she’s a murderhobo actually. she’s like kabru in that she hates monsters, but she hates Literally Everything Else too and thinks all humans should die. if she doesnt kill things in the dungeon she will start doing it on the surface. kabru is worried by and captivated by her weird psychology. they also hook up before he realizes she’s a beastman bc she keeps it well hidden. after he realizes he fucked a girl thats part monster he gets so upset it gives him cramps. i still dont know how to get over this obstacle lol i do not think kabru wants to be shipped with a demihuman. sucks for him bc im doing it anyway hes my little toy 🤍

other assorted thoughts: cath heavily enables kabru’s desires and they have like hungry hands-everywhere can’t-get-enough-of-your-body-sex, laios is the reason why cath became more comfortable telling people she’s a beastman and existing in an state between human and vulture (kabru wants to kill himself so bad rn), tension between rin and kabru and cath happens where rin absolutely despises cath bc kabru wont give her attention but will give cath attention. cath kind of doesnt care about rin too much bc shes aro/polyam like me. if they one sided hatefuck it will go nuclear and tear the party apart.

anyways to the rest of your ask! yes kabru is such an interesting and unique character! i like how hes shown as sympathetic and with good intentions but has some very worrying traits like what is up with his freaky stare when he straight up executes those guys? and when he attacks falin? and also the way his trauma affects him is pretty well done. sometimes he reminds me of light yagami but better lol. he also does take it upon himself who gets to live and die based on a moral framework of “some humans are irredeemable vermin that must be removed” but he’s actually a likeable character and DOES NOT have a god complex. my poor little fucked up guy im gonna use him

i never thought kabru was a butch woman but sometimes i wish he was 😔 though i’ve been doing surprisingly well with the idea of him as a cis man. it pisses me off a little bit that he and cath are m/f and both cis. at least hes bisexual. usually my s/is are lesbian but i cant do that here lol. For the ask game I am curious about 20, 23 and 24 (yttd and undertale)

20. your very first fandom!

My first fandom was Fairytail and gosh I have so many memories about it. While I have my reservations about fanservice and story plot holes, the power of friendship actually (mostly) made sense and the found family that is the guild is very sweet. I was mesmerized by all the magic types and many likable characters. I even used to tell fanfics to my friend who got me into it (yes, "tell" because I had no idea what fanfic was, so I just imagined random stories. I never thought them out or finished them but it was incredibly fun).

However, I didn't really see the fandom until later, when third season came out. It was light-hearted, memey and fixated on power scales and ships. I didn't exactly join it because I never interacted with anyone (given some hot takes of mine maybe it's a good thing) but there was plenty of material to read and analyse. And I was obsessed so I count it as my fandom

Also my second most powerful hyperfixation, Freed Justine. It was awkward waiting for this guy to appear at least somewhere while majority of fandom was into ships and main characters. But then I saw that someone wrote fanfics about him, there were plenty of fanarts. My thirst for information was more or less satisfied. He became so inspiring that I ended up creating oc based on him (partly because I didn't like his canon character development but hey I shouldn't be negative here)

Dungeon Meshi seems comforting for some reason, maybe due to Senshi (that's his name, right?) and how he promotes healthy eating habits. And memes about characters being different kind of autistic. If I join this fandom know it was power of autism all along

I know some events from Omori but not the whole story. I heard it's depressing so I don't want to be sad, I have real life and yttd already. But at the same time I'm intrigued by its fighting system and well, sometimes I'm attracted to tragedy

Parties are for losers is something I have googled and read about but ultimately I didn't watch anything. So maybe once I'll finally give it a try

And I have read a bit of school bus graveyard but I decided that one hyperfixation is enough. Even though it is an interesting webtoon.

24. how has fandom positively impacted your life? (Yttd)

Right now I adore our fandom! It is so cozy and funny and I'm glad to be part of it! Honestly, before I began posting I was afraid of hate or that my takes were wrong etc, but people were far more accepting. I argued only once about my opinions and even then it was a civilised discussion. Some tumblrinas followed me, I followed back and I got to know those people better. So even if my life is hard I know that there are people here that care. It's heartwarming to know

If I'm talking about yttd as a game it's going to be too long but in a nutshell it really makes me think. What is good, what is bad, what is justified? What makes us human, what is weakness and what is strength? It is not black and white, yttd shows how different perspectives define our understanding of these concepts. And one of many conclusions I've come to is that we should believe in ourselves and try to stay true to our beliefs as much as possible

Also, English language practice. English is nowhere near my mother tongue so I make ungodly amount of mistakes. But with practice I am improving little by little. And I'm grateful that there's absolutely no semblance of hate due to grammatically incorrect sentences and the like

24. how has fandom positively impacted your life? (Undertale)

I didn't actively participate in it but it was so creative! So many AUs, so many ideas. I loved listening to musicals (which also helped me understand English orally). I am still inspired to do something like this. I dream of creating musicals for my favorite games (I've tried to write lyrics for battle of wits from Exit/corners but I have no idea if the result is fine). And some of my ocs come from Undertale's souls because I loved the concept of souls and their abilities

This comforting game also made me think about forgiveness and the whole complexity of monsterkind's situation. I really sympathise with overwhelming majority of them. Is violence an option? Is it the last resort? Such lessons are impactful even if you're the one choosing the answer

29. Apple Cider

Warnings: Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon spoilers, character briefly being drunk

a short, one-off Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon fanfic i wrote! takes place pre-manga, back when the Golden Kingdom had just won the war and Thistle was only barely starting to lose his grip.

The prompt is from @creativepromptsforwriting��s November prompt list

The Kingdom’s main square was quiet by the time Thistle had relaxed enough to partake in a drink, signs of the earlier celebration all but abandoned for a quick return to practicality.

A small tankard in one hand and candle in the other, he took the occasional sip as he stalked slowly through the streets. While most would feel lonely (or, if one were the particularly jumpy type, unnerved), seeing the items from the earlier feast scattered throughout the streets, the elf could only find relief in being alone after such a long day. He’d been subject to several questions throughout it, words tainted with either excitement, suspicion, or fear. Some had even wished to learn of his methods themselves, but the elf was well-aware of those who may very well betray him if the opportunity arose. Not even just him, but King Dergal as well by extension, and he wasn’t about to simply let another would-be assassin have their way with the Golden Kingdom.

Not as long as Thistle drew breath.

Monsters of various kinds drew his eye as they occasionally moved through the shadows. Most slipped between buildings with ease, and Thistle couldn't help but stare at the more powerful of his creations, watching them even as he raised the tankard to his lips again. Everything was coming together. Not only had he found the Winged Lion after what felt like a decade of sleepless nights tracing the source of its power, but it had enabled him to ensure the Kingdom’s prosperity- immortality, even. The smile widened, before eventually shifting into an outright grin.

He’d truly done something amazing, hadn’t he? It was the happiest he’d seen King Dergal since the death of his father. Not only that, but he was safe as well. Possibly forever.

Just thinking about it made the feeling contagious to the point that Thistle couldn’t help but laugh to himself, spinning around as if being twirled in a joyous waltz with his old friend. The bells on his clothes jangled at the movement, catching the attention of a few young wyverns, who flew loose circles around him in their own little dance, letting out the occasional chirp. He came to a stop only as he nearly stumbled. Perhaps it would be for the best to return to the castle.

“Having fun, are we?”

Thistle turned abruptly at the sound, the wyverns alighting on his shoulders protectively. Whoever it was was hidden by shadow. “We won the war, and the Kingdom has been saved.” He replied. “There’s no reason for me to not celebrate our victory, is there?” The stranger stepped forward, only for their identity to be covered further by a hood. He was not completely clueless, however, as he recognized the clothes they wore as belonging to King Dergal’s royal court. But this did little to ease the elf’s mind. Thistle wasn’t about to let another traitor come in right under his nose, royal court or not.

“Perhaps that is the case for now. I am one of King Dergal’s prophets, and I have come to inform you of a vision I had- one of terrible danger.” They recounted, tone serious. “I foresee that this path - awakening the Winged Lion, joining the kingdom with this underground place, immortalizing everyone - will someday spell out your doom. Not only yours, but-”

The abrupt sound of iron thrown hard against stone cut them off.

“That’s enough.” Thistle growled, the hand that had previously been holding the tankard clenched into a tight fist. “I followed the necessary course of action, and no amount of ominous muttering from the shadows will undo what has been done. I now have the power to save them. Do you really wish to take this away from those who need it?” He took an accusatory step forward. “Or are you a spy, hoping to unravel us from the inside?” This, possibly combined with the three other pairs of red eyes watching them from his shoulders, finally seemed to unnerve the self-proclaimed prophet, who widened the distance between them yet again.

“I-if you won’t listen, then at least withdraw your monsters. We’re almost overrun with them, and many are getting worried.”

He was quickly losing patience, which showed blatantly in the furrowing of his eyebrows. “They protect us. With the monsters on our side, the people of this kingdom no longer have anything to fear,” Thistle had come closer as he spoke, and the prophet suddenly found it hard to not be aware of the aforementioned monsters creeping closer out of the corners of his vision. “Be it thieves, armies, or even traitorous scum, King Dhergal is... safe. We... are all safe. Maybe you’ll even… even milk one someday.”

He stumbled. 

Whether it was over a monster, the prophet, or a mere misplaced stone, he was unable to process. Nothing much was reaching his brain anymore, only a single thought shining brilliantly in his mind: 

He desperately needed to sleep this off.

Thistle moved past the stranger with an awkward half-push and several careful steps, long legs struggling to cooperate with his slowed mind, only making a few steps before having to lean against a wall for support. They were speaking, but he hardly bothered to listen. A single thought brought a kelpie - a horse-like monster with kelp for its mane and tail - to his side. “Do you see?” He slurred as he dragged himself onto it, though it was unclear whether or not the question was intended to be heard, let alone answered. The triumphant tone it carried implied that the answer was a no.

“Helpful.”

They then departed into the night, leaving behind only a bewildered prophet, reckless promises of a better future, and a single empty tankard of apple cider.

Steve Wolfhard: The Frederator Interview

Steve Wolfhard is a cartoon writer and storyboard artist who's been nominated for an Emmy award for his work on Adventure Time. Since joining AT in season 3, Steve has contributed his zany humor and style to several more great shows, including Over the Garden Wall and our own latest season of Bravest Warriors. Steve lends great insight here into his path through animation and sources of inspiration. To hear that he often pulls ideas from dreams gives helpful context to the nightmarish ‘Lemongrab eats Lemongrab’ scene that he wrote, below. Going on the record as saying that this is and has been one of my very favorite minutes in animation. Enjoy!

When did you know you wanted to work in animation?

I always wanted to be a cartoonist as long as I can remember. I went to animation school because I just wanted to get better at cartoons. Once I got in there, I started to really enjoy animation.

When you were in the Classical Animation program at Sheridan, did you already know you wanted to be a writer/storyboard artist?

No. Until I learned about how Adventure Time did their work, as a board-driven show, I didn't even know that writing was an option that might be available for me, or that storyboarding could be something that I could love.

What's a general outline of your path through animation, from first job on? How did opportunities come about?

When I graduated from animation school, there weren't many jobs available, so I started on a public access animation show with some friends of mine in a small town in Ontario. After that I started working at Studio B in Vancouver doing character design and flash animation. Then I planned on quitting animation for good. I did illustration and comics for a couple of years. I met Pen Ward at a comic convention, and he was collecting comics people to work on Adventure Time. That was my first job writing and storyboarding.

What have you written that you're most proud of?

I'm really proud of a scene from an Adventure Time episode called "Another Five More Short Graybles". The outline just said something like "the Lemongrabs get angry." I made that into a scene where one of the Lemongrabs ate the other one. It still makes me laugh.

What is your writing routine like? Any must-haves for writing?

I get ideas in dreams a lot. The idea for the Bravest Warriors episode "I.O.U. for Your Love" came from a dream. I like coming up with a setpiece or a fun ending and working around that. I also like to come up with fun jokes and get a lot of those in there. If I'm in a block, I think about what I'm trying to say with this story. In general, though, I don't trust anything that I come up with. I always talk with my wife Leslie about it and trust her to know if something's good or bad or how something can be fixed.

What do you like best about being a writer / storyboard artist? What's most challenging about it?

Writing and boarding are an artistically fulfilling part of animation. A job's a job, and I know that the important thing is keeping the lights on and food on the table, but I feel really lucky that I get to tell stories. I can get kind of exhausted from having to come up with ideas all the time, but I'm very lucky.

What are your favorite things about Beth, Danny, Wallow and Chris? Do you have a favorite character?

I like that the four main characters are very sweet but also have sex drives. Haha. I think that a lot of adult-centered cartoons would have sex-focused characters, but it would be lecherous. In BW, characters can be lustful but they don't lose any of their sweetness because of it. My favorite is Wallow. He's the most sensitive, and I like his voice actor, Ian Jones-Quartey.

What do you like best about Bravest Warriors overall?

I like how much adventure can be packed into one episode. I see that going back to the roots of the show on YouTube, where each episode would start in media res and end before the actual story ended. Wall to wall action. And I appreciate how the space setting lets you bring in literally any kind of creative idea. What's to stop you? It's space. Who knows what's out there.

How would you describe your writing style or voice in a few words?

I'm joke-focused, but I also like things to be very quiet and plain. In the most entertaining possible way.

What are your favorite cartoons? Which artists or writers do you admire most?

Right now, I'm really enjoying Craig of the Creek. As an adult, the things that have affected me the most have been the pilot for Adventure Time, some of the later episodes of Bee & Puppycat, and the first time I saw OK KO. My favorite cartoonists are KC Green, Meredith Gran, Emily Carroll, Kate Beaton, and Pen Ward. And they are wonderful writers as well. You can't really separate out cartooning and writing. I also read a lot of science fiction. My favorite sci-fi authors are Ray Bradbury, Brandon Sanderson, Vernor Vinge, Ursula Le Guin, and Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Which 5 books / comics / movies / seasons of TV would you have on a desert island - that has a functional entertainment center?

Books would be The Princess Bride (William Goldman), The Wizard of Earthsea series (Ursula K. Le Guin), the Zones of Thought series (Vernor Vinge), Something Wicked this Way Comes (Ray Bradbury), The Stars My Destination (Alfred Bester). Comics: Vampire Loves (Joann Sfar), Dungeon (Lewis Trondheim, Joann Sfar), Dungeon Meshi (Ryoko Kui), Ranma ½ (Rumiko Takahashi), Madman (Mike Allred). Movies: Porco Rosso (1992) Harvey (1950), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Pinocchio (1940), A Room With a View (1985). TV: Lost. It would be funny to have it on a desert island, but I don't think I could bear to watch it again... let’s not count that one. Lost in Space (the original series), The Sopranos, Jeopardy!, and The Great British Bake-off. ❀
