someone sent in this ask and I spent literal hours putting together this tutorial but then it wouldn't let me post it and when I went back into my inbox the ask was gone?? good thing I copy and pasted it, so here it is in its own post
I'm not sure if this will work with programs other than photoshop, but this is how I do it. I know @shinobi-bacon has a tutorial here on how they do it which is pretty different from the way I do it, so if my tutorial is confusing maybe theirs will click with you better lmao. I stole the greenscreen idea from them anyway
SO FIRST, you want your villager on a green screen background. to do this, go to harv's island and use a custom pattern to make the walls and floors bright green. If the villager you're using has green in their design, you'll have to pick a different colour that isn't in their design, but for most villagers green is fine.
if your villager has every colour on them like pietro or stiches then rip you're gonna have to do some manual editing frame by frame. try to choose a colour that doesn't touch the edges of their silhouette too much in that case because it'll make life easier for you
so once you have them in green purgatory, record them doing their emote or whatever. I just use the built-in screen record function that the switch has. press and hold this button to record the last 30 seconds that your switch displayed:
next send that video to your computer and trim off the start of the video so it starts right before a recognizable part of the animation. for this emote I cut it off right before the blink. if you have a slow computer, you'll probably want to trim the end off too so the video is only a little bit longer than one full animation loop
(you can use the video editing software of your preference, I just use quick time player Edit -> Trim)
okay time for photoshop. go File -> Import -> Video Frames to Layers
for "range to import" select "from beginning to end" (or you could skip the last step about trimming the video and select a range here, but I find it kind of finicky), and make sure "make frame animation" is checked
once imported, if it doesn't pop up on it's own, go Window -> Timeline to get your animation at the bottom
click through those frames at the bottom until you find an easily recognizable frame (I chose the first frame where her eyes are closed) and delete all the frames before it. in the layers panel, the layer from the frame you've selected should be the only one turned on. delete all the layers below it
now go through the frames to find the next identical frame. this is where the animation loops. delete that frame and all the frames after it, as well as all of their corresponding layers (note in the picture, frame 121 is selected, and it's exactly the same as the frame from the start of the animation)
hit the play button on the bottom left to double check that it loops properly
next, make sure both THE FIRST FRAME AND BOTTOM LAYER are selected, and crop and reduce the image to your desired size. you can do this step later if you want, it's just that doing it now will reduce the load on your computer and make it run a bit faster. just as long as the first frame and bottom layer are selected, you can do this at any time
SAVE HERE because if you mess up this next part it's a pain to fix, but it's easy to quit and start over if need be
now it's time for my best friend the actions panel !! say hi actions panel !! (Window -> Actions). what the actions panel does is record your steps so you can quickly automate repetitive tasks.
in the actions panel, click the folder and name it whatever you want
then click the little plus and name that whatever you want and hit record. You'll see the dot turn red to indicate that your actions are now being recorded
now with the BOTTOM LAYER AND FIRST FRAME selected (ignore that I have the wrong layer selected in the pictures, I fixed it after), go to Select -> Colour Range
click on a part of the canvas that would be green
shift+click on the rest of the green background and adjust the fuzziness until just the character's silhouette remains
hit OK, now the background should be selected. go Select -> Inverse so that the character is selected, and click on layer mask.
click the next frame button (you MUST click the button, not the actual frame. you need the recording to recognize "go to next frame" and not "select frame 2"),
then keyboard shortcut option + ] to select the next layer up (again, you MUST use the shortcut so it knows to move up one layer and not just "select layer 2"),
and then stop recording.
now just repeatedly click the play button and it will do all those steps we just did for each frame :)
this part is usually where it gets messed up for me. if it did something weird like duplicate the same frame or layer your animation over a static frame, just quit and reopen that save I told you to make earlier. the action recording you just made will still be there when you reopen photoshop, so just select the first frame and bottom layer and repeatedly hit play again. if it STILL doesn't work, you probably did something wrong
the recording is now saved in photoshop forever until you delete it, so you can reuse the recording for other gifs! but if they use a different colour background, you'll need to make a new recording (you can see I have separate ones for blue and purple screens). also if you were working with one of those colourful villagers and parts got masked out that shouldn't have been, you'll have to go frame by frame and manually fix them. that's why we masked out the background instead of deleting it.
now it's time to make it into a gif! go File -> Export -> Save for Web. make sure Matte is set to "none" so you don't get those weird white flecks. colours and dither you want as high as they can go, but you can lower them if you need to make the file smaller (though I'd recommend resizing the image smaller first). the bottom left shows your file size. currently as of January 2024, tumblr allows gifs of up to 10MB

hi there! thank you so much for you ask! 🤍 i already answered a similar question last year so i'm gonna go ahead and just copy-paste part of that reply here, because the process is pretty much the same ✨ 3, 2, 1... here we go!
i do all of my edits/graphics on photoshop. i have a base coloring already done that i usually use and then i’ll just play with the adjustments for each screencap that i choose. it’s all very trial and error, really! but, in this ‘first coloring’, i just try to make the image as 'even’ as possible, using tools like: brightness, curves, selective color or even a few gradient layers, to make it a solid base to work on.
there are 3 things that i do pretty much everytime:
i use a 'color fill’ layer with a dark red color with the 'luminosity’ blending mode (and then adjust the opacity to my liking, usually between 50% and 70%);
a 'photo filter’ adjustment with an orange color (to give the final image a bit more of a warm tone; then also adjust the opacity to my liking);
and, after doing all this (meaning: after i finish ALL the editing i need) and saving as PNG, i open this new image on photohsop, go to the 'filter’ tab and select 'noise’ and then 'add noise’. i think it ties everything together and i really like how it looks in the end (i select around 2.5/3).
now, for the house of the dragon edits you mention (and to add some more info to that previous reply i gave): i use pretty much the same steps above but i also play around more with 'symmetries', overlays/transparencies, different blending modes and opacities, and also different gradients too!
for example, i like to duplicate the same screencap i chose and then 'invert it' to create a 'mirror effect' on top of the base. after that, i play with the blending modes until i find something i like. sometimes i do this same process, but instead of duplicating the same screencap, i chose another one that works (usually it's a screencap from the same scene that is only slightly different). there are also times where i don't 'invert' the image, but i simply move it to a different space of the frame depending on what i'm trying to achieve. again… there's A LOT of trial and error when i do these edits/graphics! to me, that's also part of the fun when i create! 🤗
experimenting with different blending modes is also fun! we get really cool effects by trying different modes and opacities. i usually do this like i mentioned above (in actual screencaps/images) or… with gradient layers! using gradient layers and playing around with the colors and these blending settings, gets you really intersting results too! i really like trying this 'negative effect' kind of thing, where i have a gradient layer with two colors and i then 'reverse' it to create this effect (but it doesn't work with all types of images). these gradient layers also help me get a more 'even' look to the whole edit. i usually try to stick to a certain 'color palette', so that all of the pieces actually work together when i post them here!
sooo... yeah! i don’t know if this is a bit vague, like i said, it really is about trying different settings and adjustments and finding something to your liking. that is literally how i came across this coloring and this 'editing style' and i’m always tweeking here and there! but i really hope this was somewhat helpful! 🤍✨

lil tutorial on how i make bigass gifsets with multiple smaller gifs
what i'm talking about, ex this gifset of dean in each episode
For the lovely @klinejack I hope you find this helpful 💞💋
Back then I made that gifset using groups and masks but other sets afterwards I've been using shapes and clippings masks. Also in my gifmaking process I use the timeline and smart objects.
I'll put the rest under a read more since i'm gonna put in a few pics so this doesn't get too long.
I'm not gonna get in details about sharpening/coloring etc as everyone has their own process!!
I start with loading the frames I previously extracted from File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack... > select the folder where the frames are located > click OK:
2. Next up I use my own Action to load the frames into a Smart Object:
3. Then I copy the Smart Object layer into my layout, bellow is the 5x5 template & then position the Smart Object layer above of the shape where you want it located:
4. Resize the Smart Object to fit as wanted over the respective shape and then go to create a Clip Mask
5. I enabled the pink layer bellow so that you can see that it fits exactly over the shape
6. Load all the gifs into the layout one after the other - do NOT apply any sharpening or other filtering until the end
7. Make sure beforehand that you got the same number of frames for each gif - this will simplify the process as you don't need to scroll along the timeline to see where you want it to start end. Also the less resources (RAM) Photoshop uses the better
8. If psd file size goes over2GB while saving, you cannot save it as PSD but will need to select PSB from the drop down:

When I was making the Dean set linked above each PSB file (size was around 4GB for each 5x5) would use up around 90GB of RAM by the time the last gif is in place - so make sure you have enough space on the harddrive that Photoshop uses. If you run out of space you won't even be able to save the file. You can try then to clear some of the PS cache (Edit > Purge > select each). Try to save it and close Photoshop, then reopen it and you will have more space again.
10. Best to prepare your coloring in a separate file beforehand and at the end just paste it on top.
11. Just before saving it, add your sharpening (easier to have an action for this with a keyboard shortcut) to each Smart Object.

gallavich week 2021 - day 7 - meet ugly

Prompt: Ian and Mickey are neighbors in an apartment complex. They haven’t ever interacted, but one day they get stuck the elevator. One of them doesn’t like confined spaces but doesn’t share this so the other one assumes he is freaking out for no reason.

"I'm going out tonight, dickbreath!" Mandy announced, popping her head out of the bathroom. She was wearing a short sequined dress, fitted tightly to her body and only halfway zipped up so it slipped part way down her shoulders.
"Don't do anything I wouldn't!" Mickey called from his recliner in the living room with an Old Style in hand. Work has been absolutely kicking his ass this week and he wanted nothing more than a chill night in.
"Oh, c'mon, now that's no fun. You don't do anything," she accused.
"That's not true!" Mickey grumbled, remote in hand and flicking past some news channels onto some good shit -- finally. Rerun of Jurassic Park.
"What're your plans for the evening then, hot shot?" Mandy teased as she applied yet another layer of mascara on her already blackened eyelashes, "Dinosaur movies all night?"
"Might go to the corner store for some smokes."
"Please get something to eat while you're at it. We have like nothing in here." She waltzed to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator door and grimaced. He could admit that a grocery run was, in fact, long overdue.
"Yeah, yeah."
"Serious, Mick." Mandy gave him the look. The Look being the same Look that his mother used to give him when he was being a little shit.
Fine. "Got it. I'll eat something." She smiled at that.
"Thank youuu," Mandy dragged the word out as she leaned over to kiss his forehead.
"Gross."
"Ditto. Zip me up?"

Mandy had headed out awhile ago -- long enough ago that Mickey was now halfway through his second 'dinosaur movie.' He should really visit his dinosaur guy again soon, he's probably got some cool new shit. Mickey sighed and got up, idling over to the kitchen.
He downed a full glass of water and opened the fridge. Yeah, unless he wanted to eat a pickle with ketchup and beer, he needed to go out. He debated ordering in, but he needed to go to the corner store anyways. Two birds one stone kind of situation.
Mickey threw on his favorite pair of sweatpants and his Davie Bowie tee shirt with the sleeves cut off. It was a good shirt. Mickey thought Bowie was hot -- fuckin' alien-looking, but hot, nonetheless.
Mickey shoved his wallet and phone in his pockets and locked up his apartment. Maybe Ernie would have the good roast beef sandwiches today.
His thoughts about dinner plans subsided as he noticed the guy waiting for the elevator.
Mickey had seen the ginger around. He was hard to miss -- fuckin' tall, always going out for runs early in the morning in short shorts and coming back all sweaty, always had a million fucking people coming and going from his apartment. They lived on opposite ends of the hall, but Mickey had never actually spoken to him before.
Mandy had given her brother lots of shit for acting so goddamn unapproachable and that's why he has no friends. Mickey didn't want to be friends with everyone, but he wouldn't mind spending some time with the hot red-head down the hall... eventually.
But he was waiting for the elevator with him right now. He couldn't bring himself to make eye contact in fear that it would lead to small talk which would then lead Mickey to inevitably embarrass himself. He couldn't blow his shot. Mandy did the small talk, not him. He took out his phone and scrolled through Instagram even though none of the photos were loading.
He hardly looked up when the elevator arrived and he stepped into it, leaving plenty of space between the two of them. Maybe it was an unreasonable amount of space, but it still wasn't enough for Mickey. He could still smell the guy's cologne. And it was infuriatingly attractive.
"Ground floor?" The man's voice practically sent heat down Mickey's spine. This was going to be a long ride.
"Uh, yeah." Nice, Mick. Not embarrassing at all.
"Great." It hung in the air, a tinge of awkwardness to it.
Out of the corner of his eye Mickey could see the the man leaning against the elevator wall, crossing his ankles as he not-so-subtly stared Mickey's direction.
Mickey was running out of things to check on the his phone and he was about to give in and finally make eye contact when he felt a shift. Then an ungodly clanging of metal. And a stop.
Fuck.
He glanced up at the dial. Sure enough they were stopped between floors, and not at all near the ground.
"The fuck?"
"What?" The red-head locked confused eyes with Mickey's.
"We're stopped. Why the fuck are we stopped?"
"Hm," The guy poked around at the open doors button and nothing happened. "I don't know."
All hopes of positive small talk was out the window as Mickey went into full panic mode. He did not like small, confined spaces -- which happened to be exactly what his current predicament entailed.
"You open the doors!" Mickey practically shrieked.
"Why me!?" The attractive guy spit back.
"You work out and shit -- do I look like I could pry those fuckers apart?"
"Well..." The red-head took a moment to size up Mickey's smaller form. "Yes, you do actually- but these doors are heavy as fuck. We don't have like super strength."
"Fuck you."
"Uh, fuck me!?"
"Yeah, fuck you. Not even tryin' and now we're both going to fuckin' die in here. Any last words, Red?"
He rolled his eyes. "We're not going to die. Don't you think you're being a little dramatic?"
"Don't you think you're being a little too calm considering we're stuck?"
"Oh. You're freaking out."
"No shit I'm freaking out, Sherlock." Mickey ran his hands down his face. This was not fucking happening to him right now.
"Hey, take deep breaths."
"Can't. Gonna die." Mickey gasped.
"Well, if you can't breathe, you're definitely going to pass out."
Mickey shot him panicked eyes.
"Hey, hey it's okay. Just look at me."
Mickey could do that.
"Copy me. In-" He inhaled, chest expanding.
"Out-" Mickey felt his breath on his face. In any circumstance, a stranger breathing on him would warrant a punch in the gut, but now it was more grounding than anything else. They repeated that motion a few times.
"Good. See, you can breath."
"What are you? A fuckin' doctor?" Mickey huffed a laugh in disbelief.
"Been to enough," he chuckled.
"Huh?"
"Never mind. But, uh- look, see, I'll hit the emergency button and someone will come get us soon. It'll be okay."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm positive. Got stuck in one of these with my sister when I was little, kinda scary at first but we were out in practically no time. She sang to me to pass the time, but I take it you don't want me to sing to you?"
That earned a full-bellied laugh from Mickey, "Not yet."
The man grinned goofily like a golden retriever.
They were silent for a moment.
"So, uh, what's your name?" The red-head asked, gazing curiously at Mickey.
Mickey just stared back at him.
"Your name?" He repeated gently.
"Mickey."
"Mickey," He said it so soft like a prayer. "I like it. I'm Ian."
He had no idea what he expected, but it wasn't Ian. Ian was fitting, though. Ian was good.

Ian had hit the emergency button a few times for good measure while Mickey had tried to call Mandy to no success. They settled onto the floor, leaning against opposite walls, feet nearly colliding in the center. Neither made a move to completely avoid that.
After Mickey had calmed down a bit, they fell into bouts of comfortable conversation and comfortable silence.
"I thought you just hated me." Ian mumbled after a bit.
"What I hate is being trapped here." Mickey stared at the walls threatening to enclose around them. He closed his eyes so he didn't start to panic again.
"Even before this."
"Oh?" That was news to Mickey. That was never his intent.
"Yeah, I always see you around, but you never seem to see me." Ian looked to the ground when he said it.
"I've seen ya plenty. You're the dork with the short ass shorts."
Ian smirked, "I guess I am."
"Hard to miss, man."
"You too. I've wanted to say hi for like months, but you always looked like you were ready to snap me in half or something. I kinda like my limbs in tact."
Mickey swiped his thumb against his nose and sniffed, embarrassed, "Sister says I scare everyone away. Used to be a good thing."
"Sister... wait, wait, wait, hold up. You're Mandy's brother, aren't you?"
"You know Mandy? Oh god, you're not banging her, are you?" That would throw a wrench in his plans.
"Oh god, no!" Ian threw his hands up in a mock surrender like that was the most repulsive thing he's ever heard.
"Something wrong with my sister?" Mickey grew defensive. She may be a lot to handle at times, but she was still his sister.
"No, no, she's great! 'm just not into... well, uh- I'm- let's just say that if you had a brother, maybe I'd be banging him." He grimaced.
Watching Ian stumble over his words after being so confident about everything else was a bit amusing.
"Oh -- cool." Mickey wasn't used to such obvious disclosures about sexuality with strangers.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah." Mickey avoided all eye contact.
"So?"
Ian paused until Mickey was able to look at him again.
"So, what?"
"Do you have any brothers?" A playful flicker in Ian's eyes made it obvious that he was just being a little shit now.
"You're an idiot."
"Maybe so, but that doesn't answer my question still."
"Yeah, I have brothers, but they'd uh- let's just say definitely not be into that."
"And you're... not not into that?"
Mickey rolled his eyes. His lack of denial was basically a confession and they both knew it.
Ian smirked and knocked the toes of their shoes together.

Help announced itself to be coming soon over the tiny intercom embedded in the elevator. Sometime shortly after that, Ian had made his way over to the wall next to Mickey's, rather than across.
"Where were you going tonight?" Ian asked, turning to fully face Mickey.
"Nowhere." Nowhere interesting at least.
"Really? So you just take an elevator down to nowhere?"
"Alright, smart ass, I needed to get dinner. Gonna be a late dinner now that's for sure, fuckin' starving."
"Shit."
"What about you? Got a hot date or something?" Mickey eyed him up and down. Ian's outfit wasn't fancy by any means, but he still looked damn good in it.
"Oh, I wish," he winked, "Just going on a walk to clear my head. But this is working just as well."
"Good for you, man. My head is fuller than ever."
"What're you thinking about?" Ian's heavy breath practically bounced off his face. His gaze flickered to Ian's pouting lips. This was ridiculous.
Kissing you. Kissing you. Kissing you. "Nothing."
"Riiiight." Ian's eyes mimicked the same trail that Mickey's had just followed.
"Yup."
Ian scooted closer to Mickey and he swore his heart was beating so loud that even Ian could hear it. If he could, he made no indication. Instead, he eyed Mickey's hand resting on the floor. Gently, careful not to spook him, he caressed Mickey's fingers, nearing his tattooed knuckles.
Mickey fought the urge to yank his hand away. No one ever touched him so delicately, so sweetly. He figured that Ian would have guessed that, seeing his crude tattoos, but he wasn't acting like this was strange. So Mickey let him.
"Fuckin' hate them." Mickey murmured, watching Ian's fingertips tracing over the back of his hand.
Ian frowned.
"The tattoos."
"They're you. I'm sure they have a story."
"Wish I could forget it."
"If it makes you feel any better, I have a pair of tits on my shoulder."
"Ex-fucking-cuse me?!" Mickey pictured literal tits growing out of the man's back.
"Here, look," Ian turned, pulling his shirt up, revealing an insanely toned and insanely freckled back. Surely he was not about to be flashed in an elevator. But sure enough, tattooed on his shoulder was a pair of double-D's.
"Shit! Dude, what the fuck is up with that?" Mickey laughed.
Yeah, this made him feel better. At least he didn't have fucking titties tattooed on his knuckles, though he was sure someone in his family must have something like that. They're fucking idiots like that. Like Ian, apparently. But Ian was good.
"It was supposed to be my mom." Ian winced, pulling his shirt back down to cover it again.
"Mom must've been a banger." Mickey joked, still hardly containing his laughter.
"Ugh," Ian groaned dramatically. "Never gonna live that one down."
He threw his hands back on the ground, near Mickey's but not touching this time.
Experimentally and slowly, so slowly, Mickey hooked his fingers with Ian's and rubbed his thumb against Ian's hand. It was calloused, but so soft. It was a movement so gentle he hardly recognized himself, completely contradictory to the message literally written across his hands.
He was practically holding hands with a man in an elevator. Oh, if dear dad could see him now.
Moving out of his hell house with Mandy had been a good step, but it had taken Mickey years to unlearn his self-hate, allow himself to be. He still wasn't perfect, and he still felt years behind. But with Ian, it felt normal. It felt right and warm.
Right then, he felt the elevator shift again. He tightened his grip on Ian's hand. Ian returned the hold. If he was going to die, at least he wasn't going to die alone.
Mickey realized that they weren't falling down, but rather moving upwards.
They released their hands and leapt up to their feet as the door dinged open, revealing a small staff of maintenance personnel, not looking at all concerned that two men had just been trapped inside for an unspecified amount of time.
"Fuckin' finally!" Mickey ran out. He resisted the urge to drop to the floor and kiss the ground. He was dramatic, but he wasn't that dramatic.
Ian thanked the maintenance people then hurried along beside Mickey. They weren't on their floor, but they sure as hell weren't about to take the elevator again after all that.
"Hey, Mickey, wanna come back to my place? I think I still have some leftover lasagna if you're still hungry."
Mickey checked the time. Yeah, Ernie's place was definitely closed by now. Plus he really did just want to go back to Ian's. He glanced up to see Ian in almost full puppy-dog eyes. The dork was needlessly persuasive, he'd give him that.
"Yeah, sure. I could eat." He grinned like an idiot.
Ian nodded his head towards the stairwell, holding the door open for Mickey, who obediently followed up the steps.

Ian's apartment wasn't too different than Mickey and Mandy's, mirrored and maybe smaller, but it looked oddly inviting and definitely way more lived in -- almost too much décor and family photos hung up around the space.
"Uh, make yourself comfortable," Ian called as he rummaged through the cabinets, grabbing a couple plates to reheat some food for Mickey and himself.
Mickey was no stranger to feigning confidence in unfamiliar locations, but this felt different, more genuine. He actually respected Ian, the man having been kind and patient with him in a less than ideal situation.
He sat himself on the barstool at Ian's countertop and watched him. The gorgeous man who he had been eyeing in secret for months, who had helped him through a small panic attack, who had held his hand and traced his tattoos like they were art. Like Mickey was art.
"So, Bowie, huh?" Ian leaned against the counter, waiting out the timer on the microwave.
"What?"
"Your shirt," he pointed, and Mickey looked down.
"Oh, yeah. He's cool as fuck. Dope music."
"Got great hair, too."
"You would think so."
"Self-love, baby."
"Good for you." But there was no edge in his voice.
Ian smiled. The microwave beeped and they settled in, eating together with nothing but the awkward clanging of silverware and chewing. Mickey was too fucking starving and too fucking tired to care about formalities to give a shit at this point.
"Bet you didn't think you'd spend your night eating lasagna with a David Bowie look-alike, huh?" Ian teased over a mouthful of pasta.
"You wish, man."
"Hey, it's at least a little true."
"Yeah, you're both fuckin' aliens."
"Maybe so, but at least we're hot."
They both smiled around their forks, glancing over at each other a little too frequently with nothing but fondness.

Ian collected their plates when they were done, taking them over to the sink to wash them later. Mickey got up and followed him into the center of the kitchen, still sipping on his beer before setting it on the counter to his right.
In a move that shocked Ian, and even himself, Mickey moved into Ian's space and pressed his chest against Ian's back. He wrapped his arms around Ian's waist, feeling up the plains and softness of his stomach, feeling his breath hitch and his heart beat faster. Mickey's warm breath bounced off of Ian's neck and back onto his own face.
Ian sighed and placed his hands over Mickey's again. He leaned his head back onto Mickey's shoulder for a moment before wiggling free from Mickey's grip enough to turn around and face him, carding one of his hands through Mickey's dark hair.
"Mickey." He said it so soft. With so much admiration. Mickey couldn't take it anymore. He leaned up and pulled Ian's head down so they were the same height.
"Fuck, c'mere," he murmured, lips practically touching Ian's with the words.
Ian pressed their lips together. For all his gentle touches throughout the night, his kiss was anything but. Like he needed him to breathe.
Ian pushed him backwards towards the living room, stumbling over each others' feet in the process. Mickey greedily pulled down on Ian's neck, desperate not to let him go. Ian smiled into it and dropped backwards onto the couch cushions, pulling Mickey on top of him, making out like dumb teenagers.

Eventually, they settled and Mickey rested his head on Ian's chest while Ian rubbed his back and head comfortingly. Truthfully, he was beginning to panic a bit. He hadn't liked anyone in awhile, and Ian was very hard to not like.
"Are you good?"
Fuckin' mind reader.
"I don't know." Smooth, Mick.
"You don't know what?" Ian probed gently.
Mickey sighed, "How to do this," he answered honestly. There was no point in lying to Ian.
Ian kissed Mickey's forehead, "We can do this any way you want, alright? No rush, no pressure."
"Yeah?"
"Absolutely," Ian scratched Mickey's head for a moment, "I've been waiting for you for awhile, Mick, I'll wait for however long you want."
Mickey leaned into his touch and then kissed his shoulder, "I want you, this."
"Me too." They smiled into each other. Safe together.

Neither made a move to push things further for the night. Ian had flicked on the tv to the same channel Mickey had on earlier, the Jurassic Park marathon still playing. After whatever movie was on now, Mickey decided he should head home. He was utterly exhausted after the day, and as much as he liked Ian, he didn't want to pass out in the guy's apartment -- though he was sure Ian wouldn't mind at this point, kind bastard.
After Ian had pulled Mickey into one last embrace, Mickey wretched open Ian's door, only to come face to face with his sister, makeup smudged and heels in hand after her night out.
She gasped way louder than fucking necessary, "You slut!"
"Shut the fuck up," he grumbled pushing past her to head back to his own apartment.
"See ya later, Mick!" Ian called down the hall. Mickey didn't respond, but Ian took no offense. To be fair, he had just been caught red-handed by his very dramatic bitch of a sister.
Mandy grinned and looked between Mickey's retreating form and Ian's blushing face. "Oh my god, Ian! I knew it!"
"Hi, Mands." He ducked his head, scratching the back of his neck.
She gave a cheeky, knowing wave goodbye and took off barefoot after Mickey, "You fucker! I want all the details!"
"You ain't gettin' 'em, bitch!" He stormed inside, but left the door open for her behind him.
Mandy threw her shoes on the floor and met up with him in the kitchen, punching his arm lazily so he spilled his newly-opened beer down his hand. "The fuck?!"
"I'm so proud of you!" She made grabby hands at Mickey in attempts to smush his cheeks, but he weaseled out of there quick enough to avoid her gross hands. She may be fuckin' drunk, but she was still quick.
"Yeah, will well ya stop screaming it from the rooftops. Ian's gonna think I'm a fuckin' loser."
"Awww," She chased after him as he headed down the hall, "You are a loser, but that's besides the point! I've been waiting for this for weeks!"
"Night!" Mickey shut his bedroom door in Mandy's face. She'd get over it in a minute. Hell she was probably well on her way to passing out already. Maybe she'd get some details out of him tomorrow.
But tonight -- he reveled in the fact that he spent the night making out with his very kind, very dorky, very hot red-headed neighbor.

And when Mandy eventually moved out from their apartment and in with her girlfriend, Mickey had absolutely no problem finding a new red-headed roommate.

Thank you, @rinielle for tagging me! She chose the piece above (original post), and oh boy this one was a whole ass rollercoaster ride! Unfortunately, I hadn't turned on the timelapse feature for this but I'll try to go through each part of the process as best as I can!
The photos I'm gonna upload are gonna be a mix of screenshots and literal photos of my screen, because I'm taking some of them from my updates to friends, since a lot of the steps got lost in my painting process.

Planning
Sometimes, I get an idea first and find reference photos to go with that idea. But for this one, I sought out a reference photo first, and built an idea on top of it!
After that, I roughly sketch out the base pose. Usually, this looks very messy, but it doesn't really matter as long as I understand which part goes where!
The idea for the background didn't really come until the creation process because I don't think I really planned this to be a full piece.
Creation

Honestly, from this point on, it's more of trial and error.
So, I redid the the initial base pose—made it cleaner and a little bit more detailed. See: the added definition in their arm muscles, the rearrangement of Wei Wuxian's legs, and Lan Wangji's hand on Wei Wuxian's back. If you look at the second photo, I also changed the pose a bit midway—I tend to edit as I go sometimes when I change my mind. (For this, I thought, given the Lan arm strength, it would be better to make Lan Wangji look more at ease carrying Wei Wuxian. This gets covered by the robes anyway though, so it didn't matter much in the end.)
I also started adding details to the base! I usually start with the face and then the hair! I usually go for the clothes next, but I dreaded the robes in this piece so I guess that's why I ended up with a basic idea of what I wanted for the background instead LOL I also figured out how I want the final crop to look like, so I blocked out all the other areas with an extra layer!
Okay, onto the part that killed me like ten times: the robes. There are a lot of interactions between their robes here given their pose, and not to mention they also have layers upon layers on each of them! So, to maintain my sanity and to keep track of which part is which, I color coded them into the most colorful sketch I've ever made.
Another reason why I filled in each layer of robe with a solid block of color, is so that all the lines underneath gets covered. Without all of the colors, the actual outline actually looks like the one on the right. What a nightmare!
I also ignored the crop again for this part, because it's always better to draw past your borders, in case you decide to rotate or tilt or whatever your piece later on. I didn't do the feet anymore though, because that I was sure wouldn't show in the final piece anymore.
After that, I did the sketch one more time and then started adding the base colors. (I didn't have a screenshot of just the base colors, and the final CSP file is a nightmare so I copy pasted the layers into a new canvas to show you guys :') )
By the way, I drew their robes flowing this way, because I wanted it to frame the lower arch of the moon behind them for the composition. It was a little frustrating that I couldn't get Lan Wangji's robes a little higher because of Wei Wuxian's legs but I later filled in the empty space with his forehead ribbon anyway, so it all worked out in the end!
Painting
Because apparently, I was a masochist back then, I merged the base colors all into one layer and started adding shadows to the robes. (These days, I add shadows first and then, merge. It's much easier this way.)
And then, I started painting! Again, I did the face first and then the hair, before finally the robes. This was my first time painting side profiles and honestly it was quite a pain to figure out LOL but !!! I think I did a good job and I'm proud of how it turned out. I again used reference photos for this one but I can't link any because they were just several random Pinterest photos that I didn't save.
Another thing to note is that I use the mesh transform tool a lot, especially on faces. That's largely why Lan Wangji's face looks so different in the latter two!
And then I went with the robes. Somewhere along the way, I realized I didn't like how I planned to do Lan Wangji's sleeves and the flowy part of Wei Wuxian's robes and I... decided, with much dread, to do them over. So I sketched on top of the painted layers and redid the robes, again.
It was at this point that I decided to take a break from this piece because it was honestly very draining! I think it took about three weeks before I decided to open the file again and continue it.
When I did, I just finished painting the rest of the robes and their hands. The blue details on Lan Wangji's outer robes were painted on a separate layer that I put on Multiply. I probably did more adjustments to the face and hair and stuff, because my painting process is honestly a mess :')
Final Adjustments
I added some correction layers on certain areas to fix some of the colors. See: Lan Wangji's sleeve becoming much brighter and paler; Wei Wuxian's legs having less contrast. And then I merged all of the layers (excluding the background) and added a bit of blur. See: Wei Wuxian's ponytail; the entire lower part; the flowing forehead ribbon. My reasoning for this is so that most of the detail (and therefore the flow of the eye) goes to their faces and expressions!
And then, I put a blue Overlay layer on low opacity to make Wangxian blend better with the background, added a bit of shadow on the inside and the lower sections and added the glowing details for the added flair. I initially wanted sparkles and/or stars but they didn't turn out as well as this did. I also upped the contrast by a little for the entire piece!
Aaaand, that's it! In truth, I did a bit more color adjustments to the whole piece, but I was a dummy who forgot to turn them back on before posting so ... oh well.
Posting
Before posting, I upload it either on my spare private Twitter account or on a drafted Tumblr post so I can check the colors on my phone. This is because the colors on different devices can look very different, and I would at the very least want all my pieces to look nice on both of my devices!
And then, once I deem it satisfactory, I just try to think of a caption and post! Some artists wait for a certain time where most of their followers are active, but I didn't have a lot of MDZS followers at this point so it didn't really matter to me.
It still doesn't really; I haven't actually been able to figure out when my MDZS followers are awake even now.

I rlly want to know how you did you're header cuz holy fuck it looks so cool!!!
OK OMG SORRY FOR TAKING SO LONG TO ANSWER THIS BUT. First of all, thank you so much 🥺💖💖 Second, I'm more than willing to answer so I can brag about my header cuz I worked SUPER hard on it and would love to share my work process 💖💖💖 This is gonna be a liiitle complex, so here's the TLDR version of my process with a full explanation under the cut (plus some other fun info under the cut!)
I made the colored overlay in my art program of choice (Illustrator) and made the colors partially transparent, while keeping the black lines 100% opaque to have solid separations between each clip. I also figured in advance that I'd fit 5 boxes in the frame at a time so I sized them appropriately
I used my video editing software of choice (Sony Movie Studio) to place each clip in and manually crop and pan all 13 of my selected video segments to make sure they fit in their respective boxes. This was the biggest chunk of the work tbh :0
My original plan was to export the clip as frames and place them into a gifmaker, but this thing was such a beast at 15 seconds and 449 frames that it exceeded the frame limit of any gifmaking site, so instead I exported the clip as a video and used an MP4 to GIF converter.
The final file came out to 34 MB (which is HUGE for a gif) so to get it under Tumblr's 10MB gif limit, I had to compress and optimize the hell out of it by shrinking it, cutting the colors down and adding lossiness, and the final file in my header right now is a bit under 9MB
There we go, that was a condensed version of my whole process!! But under the cut I've got some screenshots of the editing process if you're interested :3c. Give it a look, I worked super hard on it!
Here's the original file of the colored overlay! The canvas dimension started at what I knew would be the width of my GIF, so I started at 720px and measured 5 boxes within the space. Afterwards, I copied and pasted the boxes until I had 18 total, and I resized the canvas to fit the entire thing accordingly. See how the five boxes on the end are the same colors as the five at the beginning? That's where the GIF loops in the final product!
And here we have the video file I used to create the GIF! Fun fact, I actually intended there to be a text overlay of my url, but I decided to remove it at the last second. In my opinion, the finished piece looks much better without text uwu But you can still see the layer up top that had the text in it!
It's really hard to describe how much work this actually was unless you're familiar with video editing software, but basically everything you see that moves in the final gif, well, there's no automatic process to make it move in that way. To put it simply, the easiest way I could do it was to tell the editing program to move the clip from point A to point B, but those two points had to chosen manually. This was much easier on clips of my f/os who stayed in one spot, like Tom, Massimo and Robotnik's clips, but there were clips where my fave moved around so that they wouldn't still be inside the box if I only gave the clip the "point A, point B" command. That means that there had to be multiple other movement points in between, and some up these clips move a LOT so they ended up having to go from point A to, like, point H. (Discord's is actually kinda messy in my opinion, as I was trying to keep his head in frame even when he threw it back to laugh, so you'll understand what I mean if you go back to that one in particular.)
But I also had to make sure that the clips didn't overlap each other, so for every single clip I had to crop them using a cookie cutter video effect, which I also had to, you guessed it, give a point A and point B to move across. Also, you may notice the top five clips that I had to cut to go at the end and beginning of the GIF so that it looped properly, and for all of those clips, I had to make sure the end and beginning had the exact same frame, and I had to copy-paste the position coordinates as well to make sure that the loop was nearly seamless. In the final product you can notice a slight stutter where the gif loops, but in my opinion it worked out much better than I thought it would!
Okay that's pretty much it for the technical stuff but lastly, I wanted to show off the notes I was doing on my little desk notepad to keep track of stuff during this whole project. Fun fact I started this project a little bit before I added Massimo as an f/o, which is why his name is kinda reluctantly squeezed in on both pages. On the left you can see my process for deciding the colored box I'd assign to each f/o; my starting number was 12 faves so I tried to do 2 shades of each other the rainbow's colors. You may also notice that Hopper's color ended up being Massimo's, and I changed Hopper's to more of a forest green!
On the right I had the order the clips were going in, as well as some various coordinate notes to help me remember where to place a few clips. You can also see I wrote down the conversion site I used to turn clips I found into MP4s, cuz sadly youtube to MP4 sites are becoming an endangered species ;-;
Aaaand that's about everything I can think of! I'm very happy with the final product and I'm very glad that a lot of people seem to think it's cool! 💝💝💝

Lost in a Dream World
Part 8: past the kingdom walls
You quickly found that this Shoji was exactly like your world's Shoji, kind but extremely quiet. You gave up on small talk about 10 minutes into your long walk and there was an uncomfortable silence ever since. The Edgelands was composed entirely of jagged lava rocks, the ground was always rumbling, and it was terribly hot. Shoji was right, it was hell. Every once and awhile there was a huge gust of wind from nowhere and Shoji would order you to hid under him. He'd wrap his arms around you like a protective shield and get close to the ground. The ground was so hot it burned your exposed skin, but Shoji held you down until the wind subsided.
"This is land of dragons" he explained after the third time "We're trespassing and they know we're here"
'Dragons?' You felt scared and giddy at the same time. This world was unbelievable, no one at home would take you seriously when you told then there were dragons here. You frowned thinking about home. Shoji decided it was time to take a rest and you passively agreed, grabbing one of the heavier packs Todoroki had given Shoji and opening it. You blinked as you looked down at the pile of gold inside the bag, lifting a piece to inspect more closely. "This is what we've been carrying? What the hell?"
One of Shoji's hands slapped over his mouth and he shushed you harshly. "Too loud (Y/n)! Put that away it's dangerous!"
The wind started up again stronger than before and you yelped as Shoji threw you into his back and started running. You turned and saw a huge silver dragon flying after you. A scream escaped your lips and a hand was slapped over your mouth again. "This isn't the time!" Shoji hissed, lunging to the side as blue flames scorched the land you had just been standing on. 'I'm gonna die' you thought, looking back at the dragon with wide terrified eyes. "Throw something at it!" Shoji commanded and you threw the gold bar that was still in your hand.
Surprisingly the dragon hesitated at the sight of the shiny metal. You let out a cautious breath and Shoji slowed his pace to a jog. You continued in silence and Shoji set you down after a while. The two of you walked side by side when the path was wide enough. The heat was making you dizzy and your body was drenched in sweat. Was it getting hotter? You glanced up and see a shadow scaling the rock face above you, too small to be a dragon. It looks like a person. You nudge Shoji "I think there's a person."
Shoji tenses and uses his extra arms to scan the jagged rock face. Your daggers are pushed in your hands and you both slow your pace. "Don't be fooled" he hisses at you "Some dragons can shape shift."
You swallow loudly and push forward with caution, trying your best not to hyperventilate. It was so hot, you felt like you were melting. The sun was going down in the sky, but the air didn't get any cooler. Shoji notices you struggling and slows down so you can rest.
"We're almost at the edge" Shoji stated taking your bag from you and handing you a canteen. You stare at your feet, chewing your bottom lip uncomfortably. You missed Midoriya, Uraraka, and Iida. You wished they were here to talk to you. It wouldn't be so awkward if Shoji would just talk to you.
"Can you tell me about this world?" You said after a long drink of warm water.
Shoji paused for so long you thought he was going to ignore your question. "I guess I'll start from the beginning..."
Shoji explained how in the beginnging both kingdoms were united as one. Then suddenly the dragons appeared and brought magic with them. The magic attracted dangerous creatures like the goblins and society started to crumble. Some humans were able to harness the power of the magic, other were transformed into different creatures when they came into contact with a vein of magic (like Shoji had, you wondered what he looked like before). There was a great war between magic users and non magic users and the Edgelands was the battle field. The war stretched on for years until the dragons stepped in, making the Edgelands their home and not allowing the warring sides to cross over.
"There's been peace after that" Shoji finished he leaned against a large boulder and sighed. " the merchant's path is the only place magic and non magic users can mix, but they don't let you cross. There's a barrier. Here's the only weak spot."
He used three hands to gesture ahead. There was a huge ravine with floating boulders in between. You got as close to the edge as you dared and looked over the side, you couldn't see the bottom. Your stomach churned. You glanced back at Shoji and saw he was starting to head back the way you came. "Whoa, wait a minute!" You rushed after him and grabbed his shirt. "I thought you were supposed to take me to the other kingdom!"
"This is as far as I go" he responded, patting your head and making you blush. "The Kingdom of magic is on the other side of the ravine."
You felt sick to your stomach. Shoji pull away from you and disappeared into the edgelands. You looked over the edge of the ravine again and then at the rocks floating above. There were several layers of boulders, if you fell off one you might get lucky and land on another. You weren't sure what to do. You opened your pack to grab some food and groaned, face palming as you looked at the mound of gold. You couldn't eat gold and without Shoji you couldn't find your way back to the Todoroki kingdom.
"Heeeeeyyyy!" A voice called from the other side of the ravine.
You looked up surprised searching for the source of the voice.
"Over here! What are you doing over there?" A pink skinned girl yelled, waving her arms over her head.
"I'm stuck!" You call back "Can you help me?"
The girl laughs and makes her way over to you, jumping effortlessly from boulder to boulder. It takes her only a few minutes to reach you. "Come on!" Mina smiles "I have someone waiting for me so we have to hurry! Plus it's not safe outside the barrier."
She holds your hand as she leads you over the dangerous ravine. The floating boulders are much more stable than you thought they would be and closer together. Mina chartered the whole way across, a nice change of pace from the awkward silences you experienced before. You try to explain your situation to her, but she just laughs. Your phone had been dead for hours, so you didn't have any proof this time. It didn't seem to matter much to Mina, she seemed glad to help out anyway. Even when you made it to the other side of the ravine Mine held your hand tightly. She lead you towards the towering walls of the kingdom chatting away.
Once inside the walls you audibly gasped. The city was full of people and overlooked the ocean, completely different from the forest you had been in days before. Mina pulled you through the crowd, weaving through people at a fast pace. She lead you through the market square where booths were selling all sorts of strange objects, animals, and... People. You made eye contact with a young boy and guilt bubbled up in your throat. The pink skinned girl didn't stop, she pulled you into a back street and knocked on a wall. You jumped when a hand reach through and pulled you through.
"Mina you can't keep doing this! You're going to get caught!"
"Kaminari?" You ask reaching you hands out in the dark.
A candle was lit and revealed blonde boy with a black lighting bolt marked in his hair. His eyes were wide with surprise and Mina giggled. "They says they're from a different world with copies of us in it!" She squealed, running around the room to light more candles "I wasn't going to bring anymore non magic users but this one is different!"
"No kidding..." Kaminari mumbled, looking you up and down "they're wearing other kingdom clothes, they're gonna get caught!"
"It's fiiiine! I'll take them shopping!" Mina was so happy running around the small room.
You reached over to touch Kaminari's arm and yelped when you got shocked. Kaminari blushed and put his hands up "Sorry! I got hit with lightning near a magic vein and now I shock everything I touch."
Your eyes were wide with surprise and you had an idea. Digging around the bag Midoriya had bought you, you fished out your phone and a charging cable. You plug one end into your crack phone and thrust the other end towards the confused boy. "Put this in your mouth."
Kaminari's mouth drops open and Mina starts laughing again. "What?? No! Why?" He takes a step away from you.
"I need to charge my phone! Please, Kaminari! You do this all the time where I'm from!" You have him backed against a wall and he puts his hands over his mouth, shaking his head no.
"What is that?" Mina points at your phone "it looks busted"
"It's a... It's a tiny magic mirror, but it'll only work if it's charged. Kaminari, please!"
"You're gonna suck the magic out of me with that?" Kaminari clasps his chest dramatically and looks at you with a horrified expression.
"What? No! Ugh, just come on!"
"I wanna see it work!" Mina exclaimed grabbing the end of the charging cord and forcing it into Kaminari's mouth.
He gags at the metallic taste and glares at Mina right before the charging notifications goes off with a little "ping". The two gasp and look at your phone mesmerized at the little noise it made. As soon as it had enough power you switched it on. Smiling at the two amazed expressions before you. You pulled up the pictures you had with Mina and Kaminari. "Tiny magic mirror" Mina breathed one hand over her mouth, other outstretched towards your phone.
You snorted and laughed, handing the phone to them so they could scroll through your pictures.
You find a chair to sit in and your legs basically give out, you didn't realize how tired you were. Leaning you head against the wall you close your eyes and drift off to sleep, comforted my the familiar sounds of you friends laughing and joking with one another.

I really like your new hood. What kind of visual editing are you doing? Also, what exactly are the rules of this hood? I tried looking it up with the tags, but alas, it wasn't explained fully. Is this a Zombie Apoc challenge? I'm doing a variation of the one on MTS2, but it takes place in post-War California, circa 1939, if Germans invaded the US. Please let us know your rules for this hood! Thanks! child_of_air
Oh dear, this is going to be really long, sorry. :)
1) The pic-editing. I made a Photoshop action to do that. At first, I was going to edit pics of that neighborhood in a warm, low-contrast sepia-tone. Because I like sepia-tone. So, I fiddled with an existing sepia-tone action I had (one meant for regular photographs) to make it work with Sim-pics. It does everything non-destructively, with adjustment layers, so the original image remains intact "underneath." But then I decided that I wanted SOME color but still low-contrast and matte and kind of grainy. So, on top of the sepia-toning layer group, I plopped down another copy of the original image and set a "Soft Light" layer blend with the layers below to merge it with the sepia-toning. THEN I edited a "film" Photoshop action that I had on hand to make it work better with Sim-pics, then ran THAT on the copy of the original image. Again, it works via adjustment layers, non-destructively. Then I reduced the opacity of the "film" layer group and the second copy of the original image so that the sepia-toning below merged better with the added-back color, resulting in the kind of images I've been posting.
THEN I recorded ALL of the above into a one-click Photoshop action that'll work on most Sims-pics. It'll sometimes need to be further adjusted, especially if the original image is really dark, like an outdoor nighttime pic with little or no light source, but for many pics, it's just one click.
I could share the action, if anyone would be interested in having it or fiddling with it for their own use, but it is still dependent on the other two actions that I edited. I'm not sure how to share all three together since one of the dependent actions is bundled with about a dozen others. I don't know how to extract just the one. I suppose I could just share the whole bundle, though. It's a very nice bundle that offers lots of nice effects, actually! :) I'm pretty sure it's one of the hundreds of free ones my hubby has, since he has the ones he paid for in a different folder on the networked external archive drive... Well, if anyone wants it, let me know, and I'll look into it. :)
Now as for the rules....
There really isn't a hard-and-fast set, I'm afraid. I'm kind of making things up as I go along. Initially, this was SUPPOSED to be just a neighborhood to test out some of Sun & Moon's stuff and some playing ideas prior to using those things in another neighborhood I'm developing but where I don't want to experiment. Then it kind of took on a life of its own. *laugh* It has BACC elements merged with the "backstory" of an Apocalypse that can also easily be a "pioneer" or “homesteading” kind of thing with no apocalyptic undertones. :) There are also some elements of an "integrated" playing style. In its pure form that would mean that everything has to be "built" in-hood, with nothing just appearing out of the air. I don't want to go full-on with that -- too tedious and therefore un-fun, IMO -- but I do have some supply chains. More on that further down.
Basically, it goes like this: The end of civilization was coming (Plague, nuclear war, zombies, who knows? And who cares? :) ), and only one person seemed to realize it. That one person was in college at the time. So, rather than focus on his studies so much -- After all, civilization was ending so there goes that MBA and lucrative corporate career, right? -- he focused on making as many friends as possible and convincing them that, "Hey, world's gonna end, we need to get outta Dodge and make a new world." Slowly, he gathered a group of friends -- people who lived in the dorm, a few professors, hell, even a cheerleader -- who believed him and started to make preparations. Everyone else made fun of them, of course, but who cared about that? They were all gonna die or whatever. After graduation, they left, trekking out into the wilderness with (in my imagination) enough stuff like preserved food and potable water and seeds to plant and candles to burn and shovels and saws and stuff like that, to get them by for a while.
And sure enough, they were right! Civilization collapsed. Infrastructure was destroyed or became nonfunctional. Telecommunications systems were gone even if there'd been electricity to run such devices. This group of 16 is out in the wilderness, and other survivors/escapees/whatever are wandering around, too. But the core group has a collectively-agreed-up mission to work cooperatively to make a new and better and simple-living world: Peaceful, completely egalitarian, communal, a world where money and power neither exist nor are desirable, where everyone works together, willingly, for the good of the collective, a world living in harmony with nature. (Basically, my ideal world. *laugh* I really am a communist at heart, only without the oligarchical totalitarianism that modern attempts at communism have been corrupted by.)
At first, they all lived together in one place, sleeping in quickly-built, rough cabins, doing potty business in bushes, collecting rain water for makeshift showers, and eating food that they brought, that they grew/gathered, or that they caught. All the while, they were busy putting together the "raw materials" they needed to build individual houses to live in, each dedicated to a specific function that benefits the community as a whole, the fruits of which would be shared equally with the entire community. Each time a production goal was reached, one person/couple could move off the communal "raw materials" lot and into the lot that could be "built" from the gathered raw materials. And the community grows from there.
Meanwhile, there are those other folks, wandering around alone and frightened and helpless in the wilderness, having escaped whatever the disaster was that occurred. Sometimes, members of the community meet up with them while they're out scoping out the territory. Those poor souls can be brought into the fold as well, added to the communal lot and becoming contributing members of the community.
And that's as far as the "story" goes for now. :) Bear in mind that my neighborhood is age-modded with this mod, so my Sims have PLENTY of time to live out their lives. Not sure playing this way will really work with the standard-length lifestages. You'd have to figure out ways to speed things up rather a lot, I would think or else your founders will be dead before they can even earn a house, much less reproduce and stuff. :) But anyway, the "rules," such as they are, so far:
1) No careers. No vacations. No Uni after the initial "gather your founders" part, if you do that. No subhoods at all. And no money, so if you want to you can give your households a million simoleons because it simply doesn't matter.
2) No electricity. No indoor plumbing. (I intend to add those things as they are "earned," down the line, but only at the earliest when the first born-in-game generation are adults. Haven't figure out exactly HOW it'll be earned, though.) No phones. No nannies, repair people, maids, gardeners, etc., unless you want to set up some sort of in-neighborhood system for that. (Which is certainly doable; I plan to do it later, once my supply chains are in place and I'm looking for "employment" for new people.) No vehicles except "vehicle horses." (Only once you have a horse farm!) Use candles for light sources. Use only charcoal grills for cooking. (Unless you want to download an historical-type oven, but I'm trying to run this with less CC, not more, and I want there to be some big rewards for earning electricity.) Don't use an electric fridge. (I'm using this one.) Use an outhouse, not indoor flush toilets. Use mods so that water has to be gathered to use to fill bathtubs and sinks. Stuff like that.
3) I recommend using the Visitor Controller to ban all but playable Sims from every lot. Also ban mail and newspaper delivery. You COULD make the neighborhood from empty templates and no stealth hoods, yes, but then you're going to lose the "meet people by hiking" thing, which is how "new blood" gets added to this neighborhood. That function draws from the NPC household that includes things like the BV tourists/locals and the hobby leaders and stuff like that. If you use empty templates and whatnot, you won't have that.
4) Get yer founders. I did this via sending Komei Tellerman to Uni and having him focus on making friends amongst the dormies, professors, and Uni NPCs so that all the founders would at least have a strong relationship with him, if no one else, but you could just make a bunch in CAS if you’d rather skip that part. Or if you don’t have Uni installed, of course. :)
5) Build an initial lot to dump everyone on. (I teleported them with the Sim Blender, aged them to regular adults, gave them the extra want slots they should have as college graduates, etc., since they weren’t yet playables in Uni.) Include everything they need for basic motive-filling but not much else. (You could put a working stack of books somewhere if you want them to skill, but really? With no careers, skilling isn't really all that necessary.) There will also need to be ways to make/gather raw materials. Here's the layout of the one I made, with some useful links to stuff I used on it. This lot houses the founders, any new members added to the community, and ALL born-in-game Sims once they reach teenhood, until they earn individual lots.
Note: For me, I did not want kids on this lot. They have to wait until they earn an individual lot for that. So the only place to autonomously woohoo is the park benches I used as seating for eating. But, I have ACR set so that woohoo on sofas/park benches requires privacy...which is hard to get on a lot with no real walls and a bunch of other people living on it. :) If you DO want them to have kids, then they could woohoo in the cabin-tents, but ACR doesn't enable autonomous tent-woohoo, so...yeah.
Note 2: I let the communal lot run pretty much entirely on free will, only commanding certain Sims to do certain things at certain times. That way, the residents form their own relationships and either succeed or fail at taking care of themselves. They also develop different sleep schedules, which is nice for the player, less of them to keep an eye on at any given time. :) It's also easier to NOT micromanage 16 or more Sims at once, naturally. But this, of course, would be up to the player and how you like to play.
4) Earning a lot: The communal lot has choppable trees, the mining rocks from Sun & Moon's mining set, and Nixnivis's blacksmith station on it. I have fiddled with the trees and the mining rocks to make them autonomous, and the rule is that Sims can never be commanded to chop trees or mine ore. They must decide to do that themselves, so production is limited by how industrious your Sims are. Further, the mined ore has to be "refined" (into things like nails and other things that go into a house). For this, I use the blacksmith station, just having a person make that object's basic single horseshoe object as as "stand-in." (This isn't autonomous; it's one of the things that Sims can be commanded to do.)
NOTE: I could share the edited autonomized choppable trees if someone wants to use this idea; I don't think Beck would care. But sharing the edited autonomized mining rocks would break Sun & Moon's policy, so if you want that, you'd have to do the editing yourself. It's not hard, if you can run SimPE.
In order to earn each new individual lot, the communal lot must produce 75 bundles of chopped logs and 40 horseshoes. And each horseshoe “requires” 2 buckets of ore, so you need to keep track of how many buckets of ore you have in inventories and subtract out the appropriate number of ore buckets when a batch of horseshoes is made. (Just sell them "to the air;" money doesn't matter. Much of the crafting in this hood will work the same way, too, with "prerequisite" objects that need to be produced somewhere first, so get used to the technique. *laugh*) So to get those 40 horseshoes, 80 buckets of ore have to be (autonomously!) mined first. Once you have the required materials, remove them from inventories and sell them to the air. Then, you can build an individual lot and move whoever you want to own the lot out of the communal one.
(You might want to adjust the requirements needed for how you play. For instance, if you don’t want to go pure free-will, you should probably have much higher requirements. If you don’t age-mod, then you’ll want to adjust simply because you just won’t have time to earn lots with enough time left over for your Sims to have kids to keep the neighborhood going. So, yeah. That’s certainly not set in stone; it’s just what works for my set-up.)
5) Supply chains and stuff: Before you build your first individual lot(s), you're going to want to choose what that lot will be dedicated to, because that will dictate how you build it. My list of possibilities -- so far, that is; it's ever-growing as I get new ideas and figure out how to implement them -- is as follows:

Some of those are Maxis things. Some of them are CC. Some of them don't actually exist and I'm using stand-ins instead. (Like, for instance, candle-making. Sun & Moon's beekeeping set produces beeswax as one of its end products, along with honey. They didn't yet make a candle-making station, though, so in the meantime, I'm just gonna use the robot station or something and pretend. They can make toy robots that can be one-for-one "exchanged" for functional candles, which can then be distributed. It's easy to do because money doesn't matter.) Most of them have "prerequisites." I'm not going to go into how all of these will work because I'd be here for days, but I'll give you one example of a supply chain and its prerequisites and stuff.
Let's talk about the sewing supply chain, clothing and blankets and stuff being the ultimate end-products of that supply chain. In order to have new clothing and towels and quilts/blankets and other nice decorative things like that, first, at the very bottom of the "pyramid," you gotta have someone who'll grow hay. Because you can't have sheep (and other livestock) without something to feed them. And you can't have wool without sheep. (Or growing cotton or flax for linen or making silk or something, and if I can figure out how to make THAT happen, I will. I have an idea brewing for marijuana -- think hemp -- but for now...sheep.) And you can't knit a sweater or produce fabric without cleaning and spinning that wool into yarn/usable fiber/thread. And you can't have fabric without someone with a loom to weave it. And you can't have leather (for shoes and stuff) without someone killing some kind of animal (domesticated or hunting wild ones) and tanning the hides. ONLY THEN can you have someone making new clothing. And at each step, there's a kind of conversion. Like "1 spun basket of wool = enough yarn to make 1 sweater." So, you sell the basket of wool (obtained from the sheep farmer) to the air, then "spin" (via a CC spinning wheel plus an invisible sewing machine to make a few potholders or something as a "stand-in" for the process), then you sell those potholders to the air and use Beck's knitting ball to make one piece of clothing which can then be distributed and used to "buy" one sweater or whatever.
That's how everything basically works in a supply chain, some of which have more steps than others. Producing new clothing would be the longest one I've come up with so far. So, when building your lots, if you want to use supply chains at all, you must start out with the "anchors" of the supply chains you want to have. If you don't want to be that complicated, you could just pick randomly or pick whatever appeals to you.
6) Individual lots: Plop down a lot. On that lot, build a house but leave room outside for the lot's function plus the outhouse, the outdoor fridge, a well/water pump and a garden. (Eventually gardens can go away, once you have enough food-producers that can consistently produce enough to distribute amongst the population. But until then, folks will need to grow stuff.) The size of your lots is gonna depend on you and how you play. Me, I like smaller lots and I don't mind cramming large families into small houses...which suits a "pioneer" sort of lifestyle, anyway. So, my individual lots are no bigger than 3x3, and the house itself (they're all the same, just different colors, different furnishings, and oriented differently on the lot), for a child-producing household, is a 9x9 square with a 3-tile deep front porch across the front. Floor plan here.
7) Unlike a BACC where CAS Sims are “earned” by certain events, any new, non-born-in-game Sims have to be met via hiking. (It’s one of the possible outcomes of hiking.) It’s a substitute for being out “exploring” or “looking for wandering domesticate livestock to capture” or whatever. If a non-pet “someone” is met, that person gets added to the communal lot, joining the “queue” for an individual lot. (I just use the Sim Blender to teleport them into the communal lot and add them to the household.) I prefer to age up any children to teen and age down any elders to adults, but that’s up to you, of course.
Annnnnnd that's about it, really. I have yet to figure out exactly how the "economy" is going to run. At the moment, the individual lots are still producing stuff with not enough to distribute yet and I don't have any full supply chains yet...but I need to figure it all out soon. I'm leaning toward just equally distributing end-products in truly communist style, but I'm not sure yet. I could list some more miscellaneous rules...but I think that's enough for now. *laugh*

The first stop was to the hotel so that you could both change into sweats and pack up your things. You nearly squealed with delight when Bucky let you remove his bowtie in between kisses, and then nearly dropped all of your toiletries when he removed his shirt, finally getting a peak at the hardened muscle all those terrible layers of clothing had been hiding all this time. Bucky let out a soft chuckle when you pouted as he threw on his red henley before he began to help you pack. You woke to the feeling of Bucky’s hand cupping your face, thumb stroking your cheek.
“Come on, love,” he whispered, and though your eyes hadn’t yet opened, you could hear the smile on his face as he spoke. “We got a big day ahead of us.”
God, his morning voice might actually be the thing that killed you.
He kissed your forehead and you let out a small, content sigh, eyes slowly fluttering open.
Bucky was, in fact, smiling. Eyes looking at you as if you were everything good in the world.
The sun was just beginning to rise across the vast fields before you. Bucky had originally offered to drive you back to the hotel as the late evening transitioned to early morning, but you were so happy, so lost in this magical little bubble the two of you had created together, that you said you wanted to stay in the back of the truck and watch the sunrise.
So, here you were, safely secure in the arms of the man who made your chest ache and your head spin, your leather jacket from the night before replaced by one of his flannels he kept in the truck as backup. The air was a bit chilly this early in the morning, but you barely registered it thanks to the furnace that was Bucky’s body and the blanket wrapped around you.
His smile grew as he watched you wake up, and he leaned forward to give you a slow, chaste kiss.
“Morning, love,” he murmured into your lips while pulling away.
Another happy sigh. “Morning, Buck.”
“Ready to see the sunrise?” You nodded and he kissed your nose before pulling you up to sit along with him. “Right then, we need to get moving then.”
You let out a soft whine and he chuckled, rubbing his hands up and down your arms at a quick pace and then caging your face between his calloused palms to pull you in for a deeper, hungrier kiss.
That woke you right the fuck up.
He guided you down the bed of the truck, then grabbed a few bottles of water from the cooler and you smiled as he handed one to you. Never in your life had you had someone who was so attentive to your well-being, and Bucky seemed to do it so effortlessly.
His cheeks turned pink as you continued to stare at him fondly. “What?” he asked.
You shook your head. “I’m going to be really fucking sad when I leave tomorrow,” you responded, your voice light but coated with bitterness.
Bucky frowned, then pulled you in for a tight embrace, his chin leaning on the top of your head. “Can I be honest with ye?”
Your heart skipped a beat as dread spread through your body in an instant. He was going to say that he couldn’t wait for you to leave, or that you leaving wasn’t going to affect him at all.
You braced yourself and nodded against his chest and he sighed, hand running up and down over your hair.
“I know it hasn’t been a full day since our paths crossed, and I don’t mean to startle ye,” he said, “But I’m pretty sure that the second you’re not within arms reach of me, my heart is goin’ to cleave in two. Colors will be less bright, the air will be less sweet, everythin’ will be dim because you’re not there.” He chuckled. “I must sound like a nut, don’t I?”
You squeezed him tighter before pulling away to look into his eyes, moving a hand up to trace along his jaw and cup his cheek.
“No,” you said softly. “I think you described it perfectly, Buck.”
He smiled, moving forward for another deep kiss, a light breeze pushing the tips of his hair into your face and you reveled in the feel of it, soaking up as much of the experience as you could.
After another passionate makeout session that made you breathless, Bucky took your hand and led you down the field and up a small hill that ended up providing a perfect view of the sunrise. You sat there between his legs, back leaning against his chest as he wrapped his arms around you. He kept his cheek pressed against yours, moving only to press his lips to your temple, your forehead, your jaw, every spot of your skin he could get to.
You turned to look at him once the rays began warming your body, admiring the way his skin glowed in the light. The way the orange/yellow hues mixed with the blue of his eyes made your breath hitch, and with the way they sparkled when he looked at you, you knew he felt the same.
As much as you would’ve liked it to, the moment could not last forever. You still had a job to do and Bucky had one more stop planned before dropping you off. He took you to a cafe, where you had the best coffee and soda bread of your life, the two of you sharing stories of your childhood, your friends and family back home, learning as much as you could about the other person.
Then, your time was up, and suddenly his truck was pulling up to the hotel. His hand was interlaced with yours, and he lifted it up to kiss your knuckles.
“See you tonight?” you asked with a smile.
He nodded. “I’ll be countin’ down the hours, love.”
You scrunched your face and he scrunched his back, the two of you giggling as you got out.
When you reached the door of the hotel, you turned around to find him still parked, eyes locked on you, smiling.
You pulled open the door and winked at him, and you could hear his chuckle perfectly in your mind as he shook his head, switching his focus to the road and driving away.
A small groan escaped you as you noticed Quentin standing against the wall by the door to your room, his arms crossed in front of him. The sound caused his head to shoot up, and he scoffed.
“Where the hell have you been?” he chastised, standing straight.
You rolled your eyes, digging through your bag for your key. “I was out.”
His hands waved around in the air as he let out an even more dramatic scoff. “Out where? With that mechanic Tony said you met yesterday? Are you even capable of doing your job, Y/n?”
You whipped your head at him, eyes filled with rage and momentarily startling Quentin.
“Quentin,” you said in a cool, calm voice. “Was there an emergency last night involving Tony?”
He huffed. “Well, no but-”
“Did Tony ask you where I was at any point last night or this morning because he needed me?”
“No but-”
“Then I don’t understand what the problem is.” You held up a hand, pressing one finger at a time as you listed off facts to the brat in front of you. “I got him his phone, I got him to his event last night, I got him back to the hotel, and now I’m here an hour before his press schedule begins. And had Tony called me at any point last night, I would have dropped whatever I was doing and taken care of it. Now unless you have some actual constructive criticism about my job performance, I would ask that you let me change and get ready so that I can get Tony where he needs to be, alright?”
He clenched his jaw, stepping toward you and you narrowed your eyes in defiance, showing no fear as he leaned down to meet your eye. “Listen here, you little-”
“Y/n,” Tony said, voice slow and questioning as he watched you and Quentin jump back from each other, eyes both on your boss with much lighter expressions. “Beck…everything okay with you two?”
Quentin let out a chuckle, seamlessly switching into his Tony’s in the room time to schmooze mode. “Of course, Tony, just making sure Y/n here got in okay. Looks like she had a wild night.” His hand patted on the flannel Bucky told you to keep covering your shoulder and you flinched.
Tony nodded slowly. “Right….uh, Y/n, can I talk to you for a sec?”
Knots formed in your stomach and you nodded, forcing yourself not to look over at Quentin’s smug expression as he walked away.
This was it, you were actually going to get in trouble for being out with Bucky last night.
He walked over to you and smiled. “So, I take it you had fun last night?” His eyes went down to the flannel covering your arm.
You grimaced, wrapping your arms around yourself. “I’m sorry boss, I should have come home and been here if you needed anything. This was so unprofessional-”
He shook his head. “No no no, Y/n you’re fine.” He smiled. “I’m glad you had a good time! I love that giant bastard. Pretty sure I got lost in those sweet baby blues of his a couple of times yesterday.”
You laughed. “They are quite hypnotizing.” Your eyebrows furrowed. “So, you’re not mad at me? And I’m not fired?”
His eyes narrowed, head jumping back in confusion. “Absolutely not. Why on earth would I fire you?”
Biting your bottom lip, you explained to him the reason for your panicking. “Cause of the fiasco yesterday with the phone and the car, and I’ve just spent the night galavanting off with some random guy I just met.”
Tony cocked his head to the side. “Was Quentin just giving you shit for all of that?”
You blinked, not wanting to put yourself into a deeper hole with Quentin or causing Tony any unnecessary stress.
It was enough of an answer for him though and he rolled his eyes. “Clearly he never told you about his first year on the job. Kid forgot to convert my international tour schedule to the appropriate time zones. I don’t even want to talk about the number of flights and events I missed because of that.”
Your eyes widened and you breathed out a small chuckle as Tony continued. “Y/n, you are seriously doing a fantastic job. Yes, yesterday got a little crazy, but this whole job is fucking crazy. And you handled it like a champ! As far as the Bucky thing goes, you’re an adult! And though the hours for this job get a bit nutty, I hardly expect it to be a 24/7 gig. In fact, I would hate that for you. So if you meet a cute guy in a foreign country and decide to get safely swept away by him during the time I’m not asking you to buy me a new phone that I dropped off a cliff, who am I to get in the way? I am the cool boss, after all.” He winked and you laughed again.
“Thanks Tony. For this job, this trip…everything. You’re seriously probably the best boss I’ll ever have.”
He grinned. “Damn straight.” Then, he lifted his arm to check his watch. “Alright, I should go back to my room and let you get ready.” Walking backwards, Tony made a peace sign with his fingers and went back into his room.
A small smile lingered on your face as you walked into your own, checking the time yourself.
Technically, you should start getting ready for work now so that you didn’t have to scramble to meet Tony on time.
Or….you could scramble and still make it on time….after laying in bed and pressing your face against Bucky’s flannel for five more minutes.
Yeah, that would be a good idea.
When Tony first told you about the fancy dinner you would be attending to raise money for child literacy programs, you had originally gone shopping for fancy gowns and sparkly dresses. It wasn’t everyday that you got to attend such a high society event, so why not go all out with the glam and live out your Princess Mia Thermopolis dreams?
But then, two weeks into your job you worked your first event, and you were glad that you hadn’t bought an outfit yet because you were hit with a sudden realization.
There was no way you were going to wear a dress while running around every which way for hours on end. Your thighs would never forgive you.
So, you went with pants.
A green sequin jumpsuit, to be precise (you were in Ireland, after all).
It was now the greatest thing you owned. So sparkly and chic, yet incredibly comfortable. The quarter-sleeve piece hung loosely around your body making it easy to move around without fear of anything ripping or tearing, and its tie belt wrapped around your middle to give your figure shape.
In this outfit, you felt hot as fuck even as you were lugging stacks of chairs across the large ballroom, a thin sheen of sweat forming over your brow as you hustled to put everything together.
You had thought that Quentin had set everything up last night, seeing that he used it as an excuse to skip Tony’s event. It turns out that he had set up the tables….and rolled the racks of chairs into the room.
That was it.
So when you showed up an hour before showtime to a half-empty room, you asked one of the servers setting up the bar for a free shot of scotch before getting to work, scrambling to decorate the tables and put up the seating cards and make the fundraiser that was supposed to raise millions for children’s literacy program into something that looked worth investing in.
Luckily, after a month of working for Tony, you had grown used to the chaos and you were able to shift to total work mode and get things done quickly. Within thirty minutes, the tables were dressed and decorated. You were so focused that you barely noticed the stack of chairs being lifted from your hold for a moment until you realized that you were walking towards a table with empty arms.
You stopped short, staring at your hands confused until you heard a soft chuckle behind you. And then Bucky was walking past you toward said table, chairs in hand. You took a moment to ogle at the giant irishman, dressed in a tux that fit his body extremely well. So well, in fact, you felt slightly concerned that if he turned too quickly he might tear the fabric. The thought made you instinctively run your fingers over your mouth to make sure you weren’t drooling.
“Ye gonna stand around all day while I get this place situated, love?” he asked, giving you a side smile as his eyes looked you up and down hungrily. “Not that I’m complainin’ if ye do. Ye look too gorgeous to be doin’ any work, in my opinion.”
You grinned, running forward to give him a quick kiss before grabbing another stack of chairs. “I love the flattery, Barnes, and I owe you many more kisses for coming to my rescue to help set up, but we have twenty minutes before the big wigs show, and this place needs a lot of work.”
He nodded, expression going serious. “On it, boss.” Then he smiled again. “Ye look beautiful, Y/n. Just gotta make sure ye know.”
Your smile grew. “And you look devilishly handsome, Bucky. Now let’s get this party started so it can be over that much faster and I can finally rip that bowtie off of you, undo a few buttons, and mess up that gorgeous hair of yours.”
This time, when Bucky nodded, he stayed silent as you watched his Adam’s Apple work.
By the time the first round of guests arrived, the room looked stunning, as if an entire team of workers spent hours making sure everything was perfect, instead of two now very exhausted people running around last minute in a panic. As soon as the final napkin was placed on the table, the head bartender of the evening placed filled glasses of whiskey in yours and Bucky’s hands, congratulating you both on achieving the impossible.
The two of you made eye contact as you downed the drink, laughing in complete shock that you had finished the job.
Tony and Quentin were one of the first to show up, Tony looking around the room in awe as they walked up to you.
You pulled on Bucky’s arm, silently asking him to lean down until his ear reached your lips and you whispered, “That’s the deck I was telling you about. Quentin.”
Bucky let out a low, almost silent growl in the back of his throat and his jaw clenched. When he stood straight, you saw him roll his shoulders back and puff his chest out, looking larger and more intimidating than ever before.
You knew he was trying to look frightening, but to you, he had never looked hotter as the Irishman went into full protective mode.
“I gotta say Quentin, you really outdid himself with this one…I swear it’s never looked this good before,” Tony said as they approached, patting his employee on the back.
Bucky furrowed his brow, opening his mouth to argue but you elbowed him in the gut and smiled, nodding at your boss.
“Just doing my job boss. You know I’ve always got your back!” Quentin narrowed his eyes as he looked Bucky up and down, sizing your date up (even though your date towered over him easily). “So,” Beck said, “You must be Bucky…”
Bucky nodded, one hand reaching around to rest on your waist as the other extended out to shake Quentin’s. “And you’re Y/n’s colleague. Heard a lot about ye.”
Quentin cocked his head to the side and shook his hand, fighting back a groan as you watched his fingers get crushed within Bucky’s tight grip. All he could do was bob his head in response, desperate for his hand to be free. When Bucky finally let go, Beck’s fingers flexed a few times to allow the blood flow to move once more.
“Anyways,” Quentin said, forcing a smile, “I should start chatting with some of the investors. You should do the same, Tony. You know they love ya.” He patted your boss on the back and Tony rolled his eyes.
“I know how to talk to people, Beck. You do your thing and I’ll do mine.”
You and Bucky exchanged glances as soon as the two of them left, then burst out into a fit of giggles.
“Bucky, you’ve done a lot of stupidly hot things over the past 24 hours. But the look on Quentin’s face as you crushed his hand? That takes the cake, babe.”
His eyes lit up and he winked. “Listen, that deck has to know that as long as you’re my girl, he better be on his best behavior. Even if ye weren’t my girl, he should respect ye as the fierce, hard working woman ye are.”
You bit your bottom lip, fighting back the urge to kiss him senseless in a room full of people that weren’t his closest friends like at the Golden Elixir. “Well, Buck, ready to meet Dublin’s elite?”
He stayed by your side the majority of the night, chatting with various investors with so much charm and wit that you had to force yourself to stop staring at him and make eye contact with the other people you were chatting with.
It worked out for Bucky as well, because everyone you spoke with took a liking to him immediately, and as soon as he mentioned that he worked at Wilson’s, most of them remarked that they would be willing to check the shop out, complaining about the shit work “high end” mechanics did around these parts. Bucky was overjoyed at the idea of potential new business, and you beamed when he offered free tune-ups to anyone who contributed more than five thousand dollars for the fundraiser.
“Bucky,” you whispered, hand wrapping around his forearm.
He shook his head, smiling. “It’s alright, love. It’s for a good cause. Plus, we’re good at what we do, so if we can lure them in with free work, we’ll most likely get guaranteed business forever. It’s all about the investment, right?” He winked again, and you couldn’t stop yourself as you stood on your tiptoes and kissed the now blushing man on the cheek.
“Oi! Barnes!” a deep, rumbling voice echoed through the room and you saw a blond head bobbing through the crowd. “Is that you, mate?”
Yesterday, you had first thought that Bucky was the tallest man you had ever seen in your life.
Then, you met Steve, who managed to stand over Buck ever so slightly.
But now, as the blond man stood before you, you were certain that he was an actual giant, a literal skyscraper next to anyone who ever crossed his path.
Bucky smiled from ear to ear, moving forward to pull the large man in for a hug. “Thor! It’s so good to see ye, brother! How are ye?”
Thor grinned back, shaking Bucky’s hand when they pulled away. “Absolutely grand! Even more so now that I know someone fun is at one of these things.”
Bucky turned to you. “This is Thor Odinson, part of Asgard Electric. His family’s company lights up almost all of Ireland. We went to primary school together. Thor, this is Y/n, she’s Tony’s assistant.”
You extended your hand to shake Thor’s, only to let out a small yelp as he wrapped his arms around you, lifting you in the air as he hugged you with a hearty chuckle.
“Y/n! Lovely to meet ye!” He lowered you to the ground and you stumbled back to Bucky’s side. “Ye sure have a lovely woman on your arm tonight, Barnes.”
Bucky shook his head, smiling as his arm made its way back around you. “Aye, she is lovely, but I feel as if I am her arm candy for the evening. She’s quite an impressive woman. Practically put this whole thing together.”
Thor’s brows raised and he nodded. “Well, you’re lucky to have such an impressive lady.”
Bucky nodded back, squeezing you against him. “That I am.” He looked at you with a fond smile before turning back to Thor. “So, are ye here alone or is the rest of the clan here? I’ve been meaning to talk to yer mother to see how her car’s been holding up since we changed the battery last month-”
His words were cut off as the two of you were jostled by a figure bumping against your arm. Quentin.
He let out an incoherent apology as he worked to stand up straight, alcohol sloshing around in his glass and he gave you a mischievous grin.
“Well, Y/n,” he slurred, completely ignoring Bucky and Thor as his arm waved around to gesture at the crowd. “Welcome to your first party filled with the dumb, snobby rich folk. Now I know you came here with your own date or whatever,” Bucky pulled you closer to him and out of Quentin’s reach, “But you should really consider hitting up some of the old crones who are looking for a fun time. I’ve managed to add a few extra thousand dollars to a donation thanks to my generous attention to some of the guests who are looking for a little something extra.” You looked over to Thor and Bucky who were both frowning, clearly uncomfortable with what your trashed coworker was saying.
Quentin, completely oblivious to their being upset by the conversation, kept going, and he whispered loudly in your ear, “I think I’m gonna go for the wife of the electric company guy. That hag Freyja looks like she hasn’t had a good time in decades-”
Thor roared, grabbing Quentin by his jacket and lifting him up in the air, face red with rage. “What did you just say about my mother?”
Quentin whimpered. “I’m sorry, I didn’t- I wasn’t-”
“What is going on here?” Tony emerged next to you, brows knit together in anger.
Bucky jumped to action, moving to Thor’s side and whispering something in his ear. Thor grumbled back, but then lowered Beck to the ground, his hands still clenching his suit. He looked the terrified man in the eyes as he responded to Tony. “This little maggot just disrespected my mother, Stark, and I’m half inclined to rip his mouth from his face so that he never gets to speak ill of her ever again.”
Another whimper from Quentin. “Tony,” he pleaded, “Ya gotta, ya gotta believe me man I was just joking around of course I would never-”
“Are you drunk, Beck?” Tony asked, crossing his arms.
“N-no,” Quentin stammered, hands out in an I’m innocent manner. “I mean, I’ve had s-some drinks here and there-”
Thor let go of Beck and stood back as Tony stormed over to him, silencing his employee and you heard him murmur. “I want you out of here, Beck. Don’t pretend like you’ve been acting like a real piece of shit these past few months. I thought the new role would give you more responsibility to finally get your head out of your ass, but looks like I was wrong.” He gave Quentin a long, cold stare before saying, “Pack your bags, you’re fired.”
Quentin stared at Tony, horrified for a few seconds before he regained composure, standing straight and buttoning his suit jacket. “Fine,” he said, feigning nonchalance. “I’ll go, and see how long you last without me.” His glassy eyes bore into yours and you glared at him. “Good luck with this incompetent loser managing everything on her own-”
He yelped as Bucky’s hand grabbed him by the back of his hair, the seething Irishman now dragging him by the scruff toward the exit. Nobody had noticed the scene playing out before, but now all heads were turned to the two of them as they cleared a path to the exit.
Bucky was back by your side in less than a minute, his hand interlacing with yours and squeezing it as he leaned down to whisper in your ear. “You okay, love?”
You nodded, squeezing back. “Thank you…for being here and taking care of that.”
His jaw worked. “Believe me, I’ve been wantin’ to do that ever since I realized he was the root cause of ye cryin’ yesterday. It was a pleasure to toss him around a bit.”
At that, you let out a small giggle, and Bucky finally smiled for the first time since the whole ordeal.
Afterwards, you went into damage control mode, starting with politely asking the servers to hand out a new round of drinks to everyone and escorting them to their seats so that speeches could start to hopefully prevent gossip from spreading too far. Then, you, Tony, and Bucky went to issue a formal apology to the Odinson family (Bucky, of course, had nothing to actually apologize for, but he still offered to do a full detail of each of their cars for free). Per your suggestion, Tony offered to donate five signed full sets of his books for the libraries at the schools of their choosing.
Thor gave both you and Bucky a big hug for dealing with Beck. “Barnes, the way ye dragged him out with his tail in between his legs was just grand! Wish it could have been me doin’ it, but I probably would have done way worse and for everyone’s sake, I’m glad I didn’t.”
Bucky nodded, shaking his hand and you smiled up at the man at your side, grateful to have him here to keep you grounded after feeling you were going to pass out from the panic racing through your veins.
You were definitely still in shock, not totally believing that Quentin had just been fired.
Thank fucking God.
The rest of the night was a roaring success. Tony went up to the stage shortly after the chaos died down, being his usual charming self and completely winning the crowd over. Bucky kept his hand in yours for the rest of the night, never wanting to leave your side.
There was one moment that the two of you had to temporarily part ways at the end of the night – much to both your disappointment – when you had to square away payment for the bartenders and caterers.
When you returned, you noticed that Bucky was standing in a circle with Tony and a few of the investors that were heading out, smiling and laughing as Bucky shook one of their hands. He turned to you as you approached and his smile widened, excusing himself to head your way.
“Making friends, Barnes?” you asked, tilting your head to the side questioningly.
He wiggled his eyebrows up and down. “What can I say, love? Everyone wants a chance to talk to the handsome mechanic who can get them a deal on good-quality service.” He leaned closer and whispered, “Becca and Sam are gonna shite themselves when they start getting calls from some of these folks.”
You laughed, rolling your eyes. “Alright, Mr. Hotshot Mechanic, how about the two of us get out of here?”
His eyes lit up in excitement and he extended his arm out, the other finding its way back around your waist right where it belonged. “Lead the way, love.”
You both bid your goodnights to Tony and then Bucky went to grab the truck, leaving you and your boss outside the venue by yourselves.
“I’m so sorry you had to deal with all this shit, Y/n,” Tony mumbled, face apologetic. “I should have fired him long ago. I guess I never realized how much he sucked until I actually hired a good assistant.”
You gave him a small smile, nodding. “No worries, Tony. I’m just sorry he wasn’t who you thought he was.”
He shrugged. “Well, I’ll be much more mindful of that when I look for a new Brand Manager. Until then, your workload might get a little nutty. That okay?”
You laughed. “If it was anything other than nutty I’d honestly be a bit concerned.”
Tony laughed with you, resting a hand on your shoulder. “Ain’t that the truth.” Headlights hit his face and you turned to see Bucky’s truck pull up. “So….are you two like, officially a thing now?”
You turned back to Tony, smile turning bittersweet. “Who knows. Kind of complicated, you know, living thousands of miles apart and all.”
“You never know. Sometimes things change.” He paused for a moment, then grinned. “Speaking of change, I got asked to go to breakfast with one of the investors from tonight right before our flight home. It’s right by the airport and it would honestly be a waste of time for me to go there and then pick you back up at the hotel.” His eyes flickered to the truck then back to you. “Do you think you might be able to find a ride to the airport and just meet me there?”
You fought back a gasp, eyes widening. Not having any morning obligations with Tony, nor driving with him from the hotel to the airport meant so much more time with Bucky. It wasn’t much, but any amount you could get with him was now a precious gift. You nodded, seeing the knowing look in his eyes and feeling like you’d never be able to adequately express your gratitude.
He nodded back, patting your shoulder before stepping away. “Right then, go have a good night and I’ll see you tomorrow.”
You grinned. “Have a good night, boss!”
His fingers moved up in a waving motion as he walked toward the valet pickup area, and you wasted no time turning and running to Bucky’s car.
The first stop was to the hotel so that you could both change into sweats and pack up your things. You nearly squealed with delight when Bucky let you remove his bowtie in between kisses, and then nearly dropped all of your toiletries when he removed his shirt, finally getting a peak at the hardened muscle all those terrible layers of clothing had been hiding all this time. Bucky let out a soft chuckle when you pouted as he threw on his red henley before he began to help you pack.
Helping turned out to be more like a series of constant derailments caused by him wrapping his arms around you from behind and kissing your neck every five minutes.
Once that was done, you checked out of your hotel and Bucky put your belongings in the truck, and then it was time to drive to your new favorite spot: a field in the middle of nowhere Ireland where the stars shone brighter than the streetlights in New York.
In the arms of the man you had fallen for before you even had a chance to stop yourself.
There were many moments when you wanted to crumble and burst into tears, as his hand cradled your face, or when his lips brushed against yours so tenderly. But you knew that as soon as you started you wouldn’t be able to stop, and you didn’t want anything to ruin this perfect moment.
Still, there were a few tears that managed to slide down your face, but Bucky kissed them away before they could leave streak marks on your skin.
You held onto each other, through the stories you shared, the silence that lingered as you stared into each other's eyes, the desperate kisses that made you wish you could stay in this moment forever.
Forever wasn’t an option, but the emotions you had felt the last two days would at least last you a lifetime.
You tried to stay awake all night, arguing that you could just sleep on the flight home. But the work from the last few days left you completely exhausted, and your lids grew heavy as Bucky’s hand moved along your arm in a hypnotic motion.
What really did you in was the moment he started humming an unfamiliar ballad, his perfect, soothing voice coaxing you to sleep.
When your eyes opened back up, the stars were gone, replaced by a purple sky.
You turned your gaze to the side to find Bucky awake, staring at you, a small, sad smile on his face.
“Morning, love.”
Things moved by in more of a haze the rest of the morning. You watched the sunrise, but your focus was more on the feel of your cheek against Bucky’s shoulder. The green fields passed you in a blur as you passed them on your way to the airport, your attention solely on the profile of Bucky’s face as he stared out at the road ahead, the way his fingers wrapped around the steering wheel of the truck, the way his hair blew in various directions from the wind.
Everything you could memorize about him, to paint the clearest picture in your head so that no matter where he was in the world, you could find him in your daydreams.
When the airport finally came into view, you felt knots form in your stomach, bile rising in your throat, dread puncturing your heart. Bucky noticed your distress and took your hand, giving you a comforting smile as he parked the truck.
You both sat there for a moment in silence, looking out at the crowds of people moving about outside, unable to make eye contact.
“We never spoke about it,” you finally whispered, taking a deep breath and turning to look at him. “About the after. After I leave…and what happens then.”
“Well,” Bucky started, clearing his throat, “I’m probably going to go to the pub and drown in my sorrows for the day after I make sure you’re settled and kiss ye senseless. And then, I’m gonna sit by my phone and wait for ye to call me when ye land and tell ye how much I miss ye.”
You smiled, tears welling in your eyes. “I know you said that you don’t have plans to visit New York anytime soon, but if you ever find yourself with a free week or something and feel like taking a trip across the pond…I would really like that.”
He bit his bottom lip, grinning. “That sounds grand.”
“And I definitely have to go back to the Golden Elixir to hang out with the hot redhead,” you said with a wink.
Bucky groaned, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest as he shook his head and you laughed along with him.
Your phone buzzed and you looked down at it, smile dropping from your face. “That’s Tony. He just got here. Guess I should go meet him.”
Bucky nodded somberly, then reached out to grab the back of your neck to pull you in for a sweet, tender kiss.
The two of you moved slowly as you grabbed your bags and made your way to the airport entrance, Bucky’s hand around your waist, thumb stroking your side.
Once you got to the double doors, you stopped and Bucky followed suit. You could see Tony through the glass windows scrolling through his phone, the one that you had been so desperate to get for him only two days ago.
The memory of Bucky’s small smile as he handed you the small rectangular box, as if he was truly so excited to do something that would make you happy. To fix whatever was going wrong in your life.
Oh how you wished he could fix this moment for you.
You turned to him, tears starting to fall. “I-”
“I have somethin’ for ye,” Bucky said nervously, lowering your bag to the ground and reaching into one of his pockets.
You breathed out a laugh. “If it’s another phone Bucky I might slap you.”
He shook his head. “No, it’s not that, love. Although if you want one let me know and I’ll give Sarah a call.” You lightly shoved his left shoulder and he grinned. “It’s nothin’, really, and if ye hate it you’re more than welcome to toss it in the bin as soon as I turn my back. I erm,” he shifted on his feet, “That day we met, I was finishin’ up a job near ye, and as I was walkin’ back to my truck Becca called asking me to head over to BHOD to help a panicked American lass out.” He smiled fondly at the memory, then pulled something out of his pocket, holding it out to you.
It was an Irish penny, a circular piece of metal punched through it and attached to a black leather cord.
“As I was talkin’ to Becs, I saw this coin right by the front tire of my truck. I don’t know what the custom is in the states, but it’s good luck to find a penny on the ground, so I took it. I never realized how much luck I was going to get from the blasted thing, but it led me to ye, and now I feel like the luckiest bastard on the planet for getting to spend these last few days with ye. They’ve been the best days of my life, and no matter what happens when ye walk through those doors, I’ll cherish the memories forever. I just want ye to remember that.”
You took the necklace, brushing your fingers over the coin, more tears falling down your face. You looked back up at him with a smile.
“I love it.” I love you, you thought, but couldn’t find the courage to say it. You figured he knew, though, and you figured he might feel the same.
“Grand,” he said, beaming. Then he moved behind you to tie it around your neck, leaning down to brush his lips right above where the leather rested along your skin.
When he was back in front of you, his hands caged your face between them, and he wiped away your tears with his thumbs.
“This isn’t the end, love, okay? I reckon we’re too good together for that to be the case, aye?”
You nodded. “And miss a chance to see this pretty face again? Never.”
He scrunched his nose with a smile, then pulled you in until your mouths found their way home.
No matter how long it might be before you crossed paths again, you knew you’d never forget the mesmerizing taste of Bucky Barnes’s lips.
They were sweeter than honey.
He pulled away to envelope you in his arms, embracing you to the point of almost crushing your body, and you still felt like it wasn’t tight enough.
“Until the next time, love,” he murmured into your ear. “I’ll be counting down the seconds.”
You nodded, moving back until you locked your eyes on the beautiful cerulean ones before you.
“Remember what you said to me that first night? About your lips being mine as long as I’ll have them?”
He smiled, eyes glistening. “I do.”
“Remember what I said after?”
A tear fell down his cheek. “That ye’d have them forever.”
You kissed him again, then whispered into his lips, “I’m holding you to that, Barnes.”
His smile widened. “Sounds like a plan, love.”
You smiled back, rubbing your nose against his and running your fingers through those soft, gorgeous chestnut locks.
Then, you grabbed your bags, took a long, deep breath, and moved to the double doors.
As soon as you got inside the airport, you looked over your shoulder.
Bucky was still there, smiling at you with tears in his eyes.
With one small wave, you turned and kept walking, heart cleaving in two.
FOUR MONTHS LATER
“Listen Y/n, are you sure you can’t come with us to D.C.? We’re meeting the President and everything!”
You chuckled, looking both ways before crossing the street. “I know, I know, but it’s my best friend’s wedding this weekend. I know the President is a big deal, but he wasn’t there with a sewing kit when I had a wardrobe malfunction at junior prom.”
Tony sighed. “That asshole,” he joked and you both laughed. “Well, I hope you have fun this weekend. Maria and I will sing all the karaoke without you.”
You nodded, even though he couldn’t see the movement through the phone. Maria Hill was Tony’s new Brand Manager. At first, she terrified you, her seemingly tough and serious demeanor incredibly intimidating. But then Tony took the two of you out to a karaoke bar after the first event she worked, and you realized that she was actually just the coolest, funniest person ever. She even helped with setup and breakdown, and complimented you when you did your job well. Basically, she was awesome, and you did feel a tinge of disappointment that you were missing a chance to hang out with them this weekend even though you saw them almost everyday. “If y’all sing any Spice Girls I will be devastated, you hear?”
He gasped, acting as if you had just accused him of murder. “I would never.”
“That’s what I thought, Stark.” You checked the time on your watch. “Has your car picked you up yet? They should be there within the next five minutes.”
“Not yet,” he said. “I’m bringing my bags down right now though so I’ll be ready when they do.”
“Do you have everything? Wallet, laptop, boarding pass, Invisalign-”
“Y/n, you have to let the Invisalign thing go. I forgot it one time-”
“And then I had to overnight it to Texas for you, where it got held up at some warehouse and took twice as long to redirect it back home. I’m sorry boss, but until those pearly whites are straight and no longer need a fancy retainer, it is permanently on the checklist.”
He sighed. “You know, sometimes it’s annoying how good you are at this job.”
“Just trying to make it impossible for you to fire me.”
“Well, you already nailed that one. If you ever threaten to leave me I might actually get on my hands and knees and beg you not to. Or I’ll make Morgan give you her best pouty face.”
“That’s not fair. You know I can’t resist a Morgan pout.”
“Neither can I.” He paused, then continued. “So…the wedding. Got a date or anything?”
“Nah, I usually go stag to these things. Besides, the only person I’d want to go with is thousands of miles away.” Though your tone was joking, you felt the familiar ache return in your chest, and your free hand moved to grab the penny resting on your chest.
You and Bucky had talked non stop since you left Ireland, either texting almost 24/7, late night phone calls, FaceTiming, or sharing funny TikToks with each other. You had wished that the two of you could have reconnected in person by now, but with your chaotic schedule and him focusing on applying to schools, there didn’t seem to be enough time for it to work out. Nor did it seem like it would anytime soon…
“Gotcha,” Tony replied, “Probably for the best, anyways. I bet you’re going to be too busy making sure the bride doesn’t have her own wardrobe malfunction.”
You giggled. “Exactly.”
“Oh, car’s here. What are you up to right now?” Tony asked.
“Almost home. Why? Do you need something?”
“Well, I did have something delivered to your place that should be there by now. Just want to make sure you get it.”
You furrowed your brows in confusion, rounding the corner to your building. “What is it-”
You stopped short, mouth agape as you stared wide-eyed at the door of your apartment.
At the ocean blue irises that were now locked onto yours, the sheepish smile just below them.
“Bucky?” you breathed out.
“Oh, good,” Tony said, and you could hear the smile on his face. “Delivery got there. I’ll leave you to it then. Have a great time, Y/n.” He hung up, but you couldn’t move the phone away from your ear. You couldn’t move at all.
Bucky walked slowly down the stairs and toward you, hands buried in his pockets.
You finally lowered the phone to your side. Your heart was pounding, head dizzy.
He stopped when he was a few feet away from you, and you noticed a pink hue form along his neck and up to his cheeks.
“Hello, love,” he said softly.
“W-what…what are you doing here?”
His shoulders moved up and down as he released a deep breath. “Well, I kind of live here now.”
Your face scrunched in confusion. “Wait, like in New York?”
He nodded. “Classes start in a week, so I just moved into my new flat.”
Your brain felt like it was moving 100mph and yet the idea of forming a coherent sentence seemed impossible. “You- classes? You do school here?”
He grinned at your words. “Columbia. Studying engineering. Also managed to snag a job as the personal mechanic for some rich author or whatever.”
Bucky was here. He was in New York. And he was staying? “I..”
“Listen, love. I know this was sprung on ye and I’m sorry I didn’t tell ye sooner. I had actually been wantin’ to apply before we even met, but I didn’t want to say that in case it made you feel any kind of pressure between us. And I honestly didn’t think I’d be able to get in because this school is so damn nice and I didn’t want to get yer hopes up. But Tony introduced me to some people in Dublin who knew members of the admissions team and..well, here I am.”
You tried to speak again, but there were too many words trying to push themselves up and it caused what could only be described as a traffic jam in your throat.
The silence made Bucky uncomfortable, so he continued. “We can talk about what this means. Obviously this is a very different scenario than what ye first imagined all those months ago. If ye wish our paths didn’t cross while I’m here, that’s…” he took another deep breath, “That’s fine. But I’d love to take ye out on a proper date if you’re interested. Many dates, if possible. Of course, I don’t know any of the places around here to eat so ye’d have to tell me what place ye like to-”
Without warning, you had finally regained control of your motor functions, and you jumped to close the distance between you, lips crashing into his.
He let out a gruff moan, arms wrapping around your waist and pulling your feet off the ground as he held you tightly to him.
And just like that, it felt like you were back in Ireland, surrounded by fields of green as the light of the sunrise kissed your face.
His lips were just as you remembered. Soft, tender, hungry.
Sweeter than honey, and all yours.
Forever, just as you wanted.

I just gotta ask!! I mean ur one of my favorite authors and I'm guessing you've been reading a lot of books and fics too, so who is your favorite author and what is your favorite book? :D btw, loved chapter 8!! so much drama xD (although it did break my heart for louis)
Ohhhh yes! Okay. My favourite book hands down is called “Un Lun Dun” by China Miéville. It is an absolute gem! I can’t shake the feeling this post is gonna be long as fuck....we’ll see....
So, as you can see, my copy of this gem has seen better days. I have read this thing back to front and apparently through a hurricane, I love it so very much.
It is a dystopian (sort of) alternative dimension kind of deal wherein these two tween girls, Zanna and Deeba, accidentally embark on a quest to save the literal planet because after falling through a portal in London, and discovering “Un”London, where everything is topsy turvy as fuck, Zanna is declared “the chosen one” or the Shwazzy, so she’s expected to be this righteous catalyst for change, and she didn’t ask for any of it and nothing makes sense, and Deeba ends up being the badass instead and magical shit happens.
But this world was so well thought-out. It’s essentially an anthropomorphism of the terrible shit humans do to our planet. Their form of rats is living litter and trash that people throw away in the real London, and the main antagonist is smog. So all the pollution and carbon blahblah seeps through the gutters of London, and ends up in Unlondon as a sentient, gloomy and villainous gas. Tons of cracks at the degradation we inflect on the atmosphere, it’s just woke af. And it was written in 2007, I can only imagine how bad the smog in Unlondon is now haha.
AND! THE ILLUSTRATIONS??
Look at that skin-eating giraffe! Tons and tons of bomb ass illustrations throughout the whole book that pop up to give you a peek at the world and it’s fucking magical. Giraffes tear people’s skin off and wave it in their mouths like a flag, don’t ask me. There are so many layers to this amazing novel, everything is done fucking perfectly, and I could honestly talk about it until I died. I read it when it first came out because my (wow, I’m getting so fucking descriptive) aunt took me to a bookstore so I could have a book for a plane ride i was getting on, and I just picked up the first thing I saw. I didn’t want to read anything, but I also knew I was going to be on a plane soon, so I just grudgingly chose one and by the time I was off that plane, I was well over halfway through and walking into shit in the airport because I could not stop. That was in 7th grade. This book has traveled with me to many different places in my country, and that’s probably why it looks like shit. CHECK. IT. OUT. IF YOU. WOULD LIKE. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Moving on, my favourite author is hard to choose, because there aren’t many authors that I read entire collections of. Like, I don’t have a shelf full of stephen king or orson scott card or anyone like that, I just have little bits and pieces of people, but there is a series out there (beSIDES Harry Potter because that’s obviously so fucking up there on the list i don’t even need to mention it) that gave me a favourite author without reading anything else outside the series.
And that person is Michael Grant. He’s written a ton of shit, I know, but the Gone series....THE GONE. SERIES.

My fucking god. This man created something that has never gripped me tighter in my life. Every single sentence that he wrote, along with his co-author and wife (how cute) K.A. Applegate, is pure liquid gold. I can’t even fathom what this series did to me throughout high school. I think I found the first one freshman year, around 2008 and 09, and I lived and breathed it so hard. I got sent to detention because I couldn’t stop reading it, got it taken away from me, had so many late reminders for return in the library (even though I worked in there as a TA multiple years in a row and got cut slack because mrs. sloan loved me) i still kept them all way too long.
LISTEN.
This fucking story, man. All at once out of nowhere, after a nuclear meltdown from the power plant that miraculously stops, everyone over the age of 15 is GONE. Nobody knows what the fuck is going on, but the adults zap and disappear like fucking magic, and there’s nobody left but kids. They soon find they are stuck in a huge dome that had a i don’t remember how long mile radius around their whole town, but it’s like a coastal beach town MAYBE in Cali but I could be wrong, but this dome impenetrable as fuck, and painful to touch if I recall.
The adults are all on the other side, and nobody gets what’s happening, but even the military can’t crack through this fucking dome. can’t see through it either. it’s like frosted glass kinda. Anyway, they start to get worried or whatever because some of their birthdays are coming up, and they assume they’ll just pop out of the dome and be okay, like all the other adults and above-15-year-olds did, bUT YOU DON’T. NEWS FLASH, YOU DON’T. two girls on their birthday disappear, but they START SCREAMING FIRST. or something. and uughhkjf panic ensues.
So, these kids start developing powers. Like mad weird ass powers and mutations the longer they’re stuck in the dome. Weeks, and months pass, alright? They’d eaten up and ransacked all the grocery stores hella long ago, they start eating each other, militias form, there’s giant worms with teeth in all the crops, disease spreads, they have to form a society with rules and shit, but it’s chaos, and when they think they’ve got something down, their resources run out. There’s no electricity soon. It’s all fucked. They’re starving, they’re rabid, they’re changed, some are killers, some are cannibals, some are now official doctors that have to do shit we can’t imagine to save people, and holy fucking shit. Like our protagonists become warriors real fuckin’ quick.
There’s also a very reasonable reason why all this happened (I’m gonna laugh if you’ve read this series), but I can’t explain it. It gives way too much away. I actually just TRIED vaguely explaining it, and I had to delete everything cuz it was way too telling.
All in all, it’s a fucking tear-jerker. Characters die like flies, and you can’t get attached to anyone or you’ll choke. Centered (kinda centered, but it really does touch on everyone. Like if you’ve read love endless, yeah, it’s a larry story, but it’s also a harlock, jenner, martin, tanner, azazel blahblah story, you feel me?) so Sam and Astrid centric (the cute lovers that never would have been lovers if it hadn’t been for this disaster because she was like the goody two shoes and sam was street trash, but ya know, circumstances...), and Quinn (the side best friend), and they are FULL OF BADASSERY. HFJKRHFWKLFEW. THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IN THIS STORY, CAN YOU IMAGINE? GAH. I can’t hfeifhrjkdfre.
AND i DON’T OWN THE SERIES? i DON’T PHYSICALLY OWN THE SERIES, I ONLY MASS CHECKED THEM OUT THE LIBRARY FOR FOUR YEARS STRAIGHT. I NEED THE GIFT SET. ALL. NOW.
I’m a fucking mess, and none of this makes sense. Terrific. But yeah, just that whole series has irrevocably made Grant my favourite author outside of Rowling and Tolkien. I’d read his fibre supplement poop progress journal, I don’t care. He’s a MASTER. He just takes you in, throws you down in the panic, and MURDERS YOU. Makes you feel starving and desperate just like them, uiiegjkeghgjksfgerf. So good. SO. GOOD.

hiya! Have you got any tips for editing your work? i wrote a chapter the other day, came back to it to edit it and found out it was 9k words lmao... needless to say I'm having a hard time fixing up the whole thing without it taking ages!
Oh man, I've definitely had chapters like that. I aim to average about 3k words a chapter, but I let them get bigger or smaller depending on content. It's all about the flow of the story, to me. BUT, that's not what you asked. So, editing tips, huh? Well, I can certainly go over my process. To be honest, I am not the best editor, because I'm usually too impatient to do a proper job. Still, I do HAVE a process, and I always edit at least a little because posting something without editing, to me, is like jumping into a lake of fiery acid in nothing but my birthday suit. It's gonna burn, and oh boy am I gonna have regrets. The bare minimum of editing that I will do on any given story looks a little something like this:1. Write the whole chapter. 2. Read through and adjust where needed. 3. Copy text from Scrivener (my main writing program) into Microsoft Word. Read through again and use the MS Word grammar/spellcheck to catch any missed errors. (you can also use a program called Grammarly that is pretty nifty with this step, too. I'm not a grammar savant, so I like to rely on software to catch the things that I missed because I type how I talk, which is atrocious apparently). 4. Copy text from MS Word and paste into AO3, click preview, and read through again to check for errors and format. 5. PostFor stories like Tearing Down the Heavens and As Bright as the Stars, that was about all I did. I didn't need to do a ton of editing for those because they were lighter to write. For stories like One Hundred Years in the Making or The Traveler, however, this process gets a LOT more complex. Those stories have complicated narratives, and I am balancing several different plot threads at any given time in any given chapter. There are layers on top of layers, and it gives the writing and editing process a whole new flavor. For more complicated stories, the process starts to look more like this: 1. Write the whole chapter. 1a: stop in the middle, double back to check something, realize that it isn't right and redo three paragraphs. 1b: re-read through the beginning of the chapter to get the flow again1c: realize that I forgot to foreshadow something and add it1d: actually write the rest of the chapter2. Read through and adjust where needed.2a: realize I'm still missing foreshadowing. Adjust, start the read through again.2b: realize nobody is talking like a human, not even for the fantasy genre. Edit for human flavoring. Adjust, start the read through again. 2c: Start the read through over to check for flow, make adjustments to the adjustments. 2d: check my outline and check the next few plot points coming up in the story to make sure I didn't fuck up the story progression or miss any OTHER points of foreshadowing. Make any necessary adjustments.2e: Repeat all parts of step 2 until a read through has been completed with no adjustments made.3. Copy text from Scrivener (my main writing program) into Microsoft Word. Read through again and use the MS Word grammar/spellcheck to catch any missed errors. 3a: argue with MS Word grammar check over word order. 3b. Fuck you, MS Word, "chivalry" is a perfectly valid word. 3c: check document from the beginning again to make sure I REALLY feel like I'm right and MS Word is wrong on all squiggle battles (I am not so prideful to think I actually know what I'm doing, so I like to triple check these things when a computer says I'm wrong)4. Copy text from MS Word and paste into AO3, click preview, and read through again to check for errors and format. 4a: notice something wrong, adjust. 4b: read through and make minor adjustments, then copy that back into Scrivener so I have the updated copy. 5. Post5a: hyperventilate slightly until someone commentsAnd those are just my steps for average chapters. If a chapter is Important with a capital I, then I will usually write it ahead of time and come back to edit it repeatedly. This means it will go through a lot of changes, usually with large portions being scrapped in favor of newer ones, but it ends up being polished enough to carry the weight of the big parts of the narrative. If a chapter is giving me any trouble, I usually try the following things to get through editing:Reading it out loudChanging the font as I edit Changing the medium (as in sending it to myself and reading it on my phone, or a tablet, or printing it, etc.)ReAdInG iT oUt LoUdSending it to a friend to get their opinion on something (no joke, this saved my life in the chapters of ABatS where Nicolette is in Jumin's apartment. I think I rewrote a couple of those chapters 8 or 9 times before I was happy with them, but I also needed input because I was trying to balance someone exhibiting detestable behavior while not making them out to be a detestable person, ie still garnering compassion and sympathy. It was a very fine line to walk along. "Test" readers help me get those parts right.)It's also worth noting that sometimes NOT editing right away is a better plan. With most of my fanfiction, I'm impatient and don't bother waiting because I want to post, but with Original works I will usually step away and wait at MINIMUM 24 hours before I try to edit anything. Coming back with fresh eyes can really alleviate a lot of the strain. You'll catch more, have a better grasp of the flow, and be more constructive while you edit. The flip side of that is that you shouldn't wait TOO long. If you wander off into the woodlands and return to your words a year later, you will have grown as a person and a writer, thus making what you previously wrote very inadequate and requiring EXTENSIVE edits, or the need to be rewritten. And while that is good for some projects, if you table everything and continuously come back to rewrite it, then you will finish nothing. Older work should be like shrines dedicated to your progress, not a phoenix rising from the ashes of the past every time you decide you want to give it a new polish. Now, since you said the chapter is 9k, I would recommend reading through it a couple of times. Longer chapters tend to require more attention to the flow, so that each thought transitions to the next properly. This can, of course, change if you have it split by different POV shifts or otherwise broke it up into smaller, more digestible chunks. But with a chapter that long, it needs to flow VERY smoothly through the different segments, otherwise you will have people's attention span snapping in the middle. Then THEY'LL wander off into the woods and get eaten by bears, and the news outlets will find out they had been reading your chapter, and there will be organizations formed of angry mothers who hold up signs and declare that your words drive people to death by bear. That probably isn't what you are going for with the chapter, so...yeah. There has to be a sort of heartbeat to the words, that keeps urging the eyes to keep going down the page and the reader to keep thinking "oh yes, but what then?". Flow and a sense of good pacing are paramount to longer chapters. I think one of the chapters I hated editing the MOST was Chapter 4 of Facing Down the Void. It was a solid, 6400 word chunk of exposition, and I poured over it several times trying to make sure that it flowed well enough to support what was happening. It was basically ALL dialogue, and had several parties to account for in the conversation, so I drove myself nuts trying to make sure it was balanced. Even then, I'm sure if I picked it up and looked at it again I would feel like it needed some re-writing (something I will eventually get to, once I catch back up in my DA stories and get to writing that one again). In the end, if you want to SHORTEN editing time, then I recommend taking a break and coming back to it in 24 hours. Then, when you return, pop it into a different font and read it out loud to yourself. You will probably only have to read through twice before you have worked out all the kinks. Disclaimer, I'm still not a fantastic artist and don't have a ton of push to develop it as a long term skill, but this is all stuff I've found to develop my art skills unintentionally over time.
TRACE STUFF.
Not other people's art obviously, but photos. Do you want to draw Henry Clay? I wanted to draw Henry Clay. Fifteen times, for a school project where I wrote and illustrated a children's book about how the dude NEVER got elected president no matter how hard he tried. Now, I could draw with as much skill as a clod of dirt, so what did I do? I pulled up a picture of Henry Clay on the computer, sat in a dim room with brightness up 100%, stuck a piece of cardstock on top of my screen, and traced.
At first, I traced every detail I could see through the paper.
Then, as I got lazier, I traced the big lines and freehanded the details. To my surprise, I found these pages looked better than the first ones.
Towards the end, while I still was tracing other things, I didnt bother tracing Henry Clay. I just pulled up a reference photo and freehanded the whole thing. Once again, to my surprise, these final pages looked EVEN BETTER.
Three years later, a few weeks ago, I tried to draw myself for a big collaborative art piece for jse. No references at ALL. Just a stylus, a stimulant-induced need to do SOMETHING (I had messed up my medication that evening), and my own brain. And lo and behold IT WAS ACTUALLY KINDA GOOD.
Unless you're a human copy machine like my little sister, you aren't always gonna know how the thing in front of you translates into lines on a page if you don't trace it or find how to books or just trial and error until you cry. Tracing from a computer screen is cool because the layer in between fades out the fine details like shading, bringing attention to the defining shapes and lines that build what you want to draw (in my scenario, a face).
That's not everything though; I don't post a ton of art on tumblr and anyone who's seen my art knows it is like a coloring book; the basic shapes are pretty true to life and recognizable, but I don't know how to do shading and finer details (for the exact reasons I just described). But as a start, tracing from photos is so much definitely your friend and don't let anyone on this hellsite shame you for it.
Does anyone have advice that they can offer about how they learned to draw? I dont where to go or what to do…
