this has largely been a discussion over on twitter and i haven't seen much of it over here really but regardless i still want to make how i feel clear. can we cool it with certain comments about iii's appearance. these were tweets he liked just before leaving the site so it's pretty obvious with this in mind that he's not taking whatever everyone has had to say for months as harmless funny jokes. he's not your friend that you can joke around with.

Glad I'm not the only one that noticed the ears.

So much going on in this scene with Michael and David's body language, between the red ears and the dilated pupils...

There's been a lot of talk about acting choices and doing something for the character vs. the actor's own personal desire. But what I think keeps getting overlooked is that Michael himself said that everything from the last four years--everything that's happened with him and David since the first season, including enduring a global pandemic and being in Staged--plays into what we see on screen. It would seem beyond belief, then, that Michael could stand across from someone who generates as much emotion in him as David does and not feel as though he's reacting to David as much as Crowley.

And if that is the case--if real life is bleeding into the characters as much as Michael is saying it is--then it would make all the sense in the world for their bodies to react to each other. For those involuntary physical responses to be something that happens when Michael and David are around each other, that they bring out of each other, and not just when they are acting. I am just glad other people are seeing it, too...

as a media psychology researcher 85% of my job is figuring out the most horrifically academic way to say "you idiots wouldn't last a day on tumblr"

#my job really is turning band lore into observations that are abstract enough that we can do math about it #ADT my beloathed </3 #time for me to rant now #you have no idea how frustrating it is for the general consensus in your field of research to be so completely off-base #sometimes the way I have to talk to get other researchers to listen to me makes me feel like I'm a traitor to my own beliefs #like yes. in a -very very basic- sense we do tend to like nice people who do good things and dislike mean people who do bad things #there are traceable social-evolutionary reasons for that #but its SOOOOOOOOOO reductive. especially when it comes to fiction (and it's not even limited to that!)#my entire dissertation is probably going to sum up like 'hey uhhh maybe sometimes people like characters because they're INTERESTING'#(cue 'what do you mean 'interesting'?')#and you'd think that's so fucking obvious (it is) but it will take me literal non-metaporical -years- of research to get that point across #when am I ever going to get further down my hit list. I also need to set aside time to destroy the concept of moral purity #and don't even get me STARTED on character identification. the measures for parasocial shit are so broken we might as well just start over #don't get me wrong I love my job. yeah ok so I caved. Lit up another bowl, opened a new folder on my Obsidian vault, and I'm gonna rewatch the minecraft diaries and I'm going to take detailed notes on everything plot related I can, separated episode by episode, make observations, and then create a little personal wikipedia of my interpretations of the characters as they appear on the show.

I just did episode one to do what is essentially a "am I capable of watching this" test (I feared since it was 2016 youtube that I was into in the year 2016, a historically terrible year for me, that I would have some HEAVILY BIASED ideas on the quality of this show, and that if I rewatched I would ruin it for myself) and I honestly didn't have too hard of a time with the youtube of it all. Cringe is and has been dead, and I'm looking at this like a fun little excercise in studying how this piece of media tells the story it tells.

Speaking of, I find it so interesting how the machinima of Zenix and Garroth kicks us off and we then have Aphmau speaking as like... a comentary youtuber. The machinima sets up a plot that isn't even hinted more at in the episode, too, but I can see the first 10 or whatever episodes having all been recorded in 1 batch all at once and then cut up. I don't recall how characterized Aphmau gets in this whole thing.

And also I find Aphmau doing the voices for Garroth and Zenix so unironically fun and endears me to the series. Idk why but it made me smile!

I'll probably liveblog more of this experience bc I'm incapable of keeping my mouth shut.
