Two New Moscow Metro Stations
24 March 2022
The Architectural Appearance Of Two New Moscow Metro Stations Will Be Selected In An Open International Competition
Location: Ostrov Mechty metro station and Zagorye metro station, Biryulyovskaya line, Mosocw
Two New Moscow Metro Station Buildings
The Open International Competition began on March 17, 2022. It is aimed at developing the architectural appearance of the Ostrov Mechty and Zagorye metro stations of the Biryulyovskaya line. The goal of the competition is to find the optimal architectural and artistic designs for the passenger zones and entrance halls of the stations. The closing date for competition applications is April 28, 2022.
The competition is being held with support from the Moscow government and Sergey Kuznetsov, the chief architect of Moscow. The competition is organized by the Mosinzhproekt Group of Companies, the main designer and general contractor of Moscow metro development programs. Agency for Strategic Development CENTER is the operator of the competition.
The quality and feasibility of the projects will be assessed by a professional jury chaired by Andrey Bochkaryov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Urban Planning Policy and Construction. The jury also includes Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow, Yuri Kravtsov, CEO of Mosinzhproekt JSC, Viktor Kozlovskiy, Head of the Moscow Metro, as well as leading Russian and foreign specialists in architecture, design, and urban planning.
Andrey Bochkaryov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in Urban Planning and Construction, considers the construction of the Biryulevskaya line one of the most important transport projects in the capital. It will bring the metro to the Biryulyovo Zapadnoye and Biryulyovo Vostochnoye districts «The new line will improve transport services in the south of the capital, including the rapidly developing areas of ZIL and Nagatinskiy Zaton, as well as the renovation neighborhoods under construction. The plan is to remove load from the central sections of the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya and Zamoskvoretskaya lines, reducing traffic intensity and improving the environmental situation in the areas», said Andrey Bochkarev, «At the same time, in developing the metro network, we strive to create an individual interior for each station, in line with the traditions of Moscow Metro construction».
Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow and Deputy President of the Jury, said that since 2012, the Moscow City Architecture Committee has already held more than 100 competitions, including metro development projects. At all times and in all circumstances, our primary objective is to pursue architectural standards of the highest quality, and competitions are a versatile tool for this. The Moscow Metro directly reflects the modern era. Turning points in history create not just masterpieces, but new directions in art and culture. For all artists, which architects certainly are, this is an invaluable experience and opportunity. I emphasize that we are open to working with international teams.
Yuri Kravtsov, General Director of Mosinzhproekt JSC, noted that the current Open Competition for the development of architectural designs for metro stations is the sixth one organized by Mosinzhproekt. «Thanks to previous competitions starting in 2014, we have developed unique designs for 11 metro stations. Four of them are already open to passengers. These are Solntsevo and Novoperedelkino stations of the Solntsevskaya line, opened in 2018, and Mnyovniki and Terekhovo stations of the Bolshaya Koltsevaya line, which opened in 2021. By the end of the year, we will have completed the construction of several more stations on the Bolshaya Koltsevaya line», he said. Kravtsov noted that the construction of the Biryulyovskaya line, a new 21 km long radial line of the Moscow metro with 10 stations, is another significant project for Moscow’s transport infrastructure. «We will be using modern construction materials and powerful equipment in the construction, in particular, tunnel boring machines with a diameter of 10 meters. Our purpose is to link this project with the current urban environment using digital technology», he concluded.
The practice of holding professional competitions for the development of the architectural and artistic look of Moscow metro stations was revived in 2014 on the initiative of Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
The international competition for the development of the architectural appearance of two Moscow metro stations is open to Russian and foreign architectural bureaus (with a Russian representative office or in consortium with a Russian partner) that are able to attract designers, engineers, planners, and specialists in economics and financial modeling to their team.
To participate, it is necessary to complete an application form on the competition’s official website at https://designmetro.ru/ by April 28 and, in the first qualifying stage, to provide a portfolio of relevant projects and an essay describing the key ideas in the architectural and artistic design of the stations.
The proposed concepts for station design should be harmoniously combined with the current town-planning and cultural and historical context of their locations and be in line with the spirit of the times, technologically advanced, adapted to the movement of all population categories, and also be convenient from the point of view of navigation.
In August, the jury will decide on which projects to implement in the future.
About the competition sites:
Ostrov Mechty Metro Station Buildings
Ostrov Mechty is a future transfer station with Technopark station of the Zamoskvoretskaya line. The project includes an elevated walkway with travelators, two lobbies and exits to Prospect Andropova and the Ostrov Mechty Entertainment Park, as well as to existing and future residential, business, and public buildings and surface passenger transport stops. The station complex will be located on a section of the subsurface metro line.
The design calls for two single-track tunnels to approach the station, resulting in the station being designed with a single island transfer platform. Due to the depth of the access tunnels, the station and one lobby will be located predominately underground. The station’s other lobby will be above ground. The underground zone includes a pedestrian crossing, one lobby, and the passenger platform. The second, above-ground lobby will include an elevated walkway (bridge) to Technopark station, ventilation ducts, and stairways and elevators with entrance halls with access to the surface.
Zagorye Metro Station Building
Zagorye is a future station located along Lipetskaya Street. The station will have two lobbies, northern and southern. The southern concourse will have exits at the intersection of Lebedyanskaya Street and Lipetskaya Street. Both lobbies will have exits to Lipetskaya Street, which is adjacent to the Tsaritsyno natural-historical park. The station complex will be located on a section of the subsurface metro line.
According to the design, one dual-track tunnel will approach the station, resulting in the station being designed with two transfer platforms. Due to the depth of access tunnel, the whole station will be located underground. The underground zone will feature pedestrian crossings, lobbies, and the passenger platforms. Only the ventilation ducts and stairways/elevators with entrance halls will have access to the surface.

Moscow Metro Competition Winners

Moscow Metro International Competition Winners
Location: Moscow area, Russia
Winners Announced for the International Competition
for the Design of the Prospekt Marshala Zhukova and Klenoviy Bulvar 2 Metro Stations
The Fifth International Competition for the Design of Moscow Metro Stations has come to an end. The judges awarded the first prize for designing the Prospekt Marshala Zhukova station on the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya line to the ASADOV Architectural Bureau, Russia, and the first prize for designing the Klenovy Bulvar 2 station on the Biryulyovskaya line to a consortium headed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Great Britain.
The competition was initiated by Mosinzhproekt JSC, the sole operator of the Moscow metro development program. The competition is held with support from the Moscow government and with contributions from Sergei Kuznetsov, the chief architect of Moscow.
Moscow Metro Design Competition – Klenoviy Bulvar 2 Metro Station winning design by Zaha Hadid Architects:
Andrei Bochkarev, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Planning Policy and Construction, jury member “Moscow brought back the tradition of open architectural competitions for the design of metro stations in 2014 at the behest of Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. This particular competition saw 113 bids submitted from 12 countries. It had two stages, which culminated with a decision by the jury, which choose the most unique design for the two stations.”
Sergei Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow, Deputy President of the Jury “We have already held five station design competitions, and each time we have had the most amazing results possible. These are always symbolic milestones for the architecture of the Moscow metro, as such things help improve the public image of both the metro itself and the modern architecture of Moscow in general. This year’s winners offered us vibrant innovations that showed that we’re moving in the right direction. I firmly believe that the new stations will make an excellent addition to the city’s tourist itinerary.”
Moscow Metro Design Competition – Klenoviy Bulvar 2 Metro Station winner:
Yuri Kravtsov, Director General of Mosinzhproekt JSC “Development of the Moscow metro is the driver of the city’s economic growth. Mosinzhproekt, as the managing company in charge of building new lines and stations for the Moscow metro, has a vital mission: to keep up project pace no matter what happens. Even though we announced this competition during a pandemic, we managed to attract a lot of applicants from all over the world: we were seeing submissions not just from Russian architects, but also from those in Great Britain, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, Latvia, Germany, Hungary, China, Poland, and Uzbekistan.
Looking back, I have to say that the competition successfully met its main goal – to collect interesting design concepts for the Moscow metro stations. The winners’ project proposals feature innovative architectural forms that the Moscow metro has never seen before, and they will require an unorthodox approach to construction as well.
This means that development of the Moscow metro is not stagnating. It keeps moving forward on all fronts, technology included. The wide geographical reach of the competition is a clear testament to the universally growing interest in the design of Moscow’s metro stations, and Mosinzhproekt is planning to continue holding such open international events in the future.”
Moscow Klenoviy Bulvar 2 Metro Station winning design by Zaha Hadid Architects:
The architectural solution for the Prospekt Marshala Zhukova station is based on the design of the Great Patriotic War medal: a symbol of courage, valor, and heroism. The concept offered by the ASADOV Architectural Bureau uses ruby-tinted light, golden accents, and sharp geometric patterns.
The white-trimmed red star and its golden rays are brought together to evoke the image of a memorial stele. The dark sidewalls symbolize the tragedy of war and also make the station visually more spacious. Lighting also has a huge role to play. The delicate threads of golden light weave into a geometric pattern on the ceiling. The ruby glow of the columns’ glass sections makes the interior even more magnificent. The entrance pavilions are shaped like giant red triangles, which not only make the station’s entrance more visible, but also carry special meaning: their design harkens back to the arrows on war maps.
Zaha Hadid Architects offers a next-gen look for the Klenovy Bulvar 2 station, with special design methods that impact the passengers’ perception of the station in unprecedented ways. Elegant, weightless, transparent, full of light, and clean lines – the station will provide comfort and reduce the stress associated with living in a metropolis.
Lighting is one of the project’s essential elements: the dynamic system of regulating the light’s tint will help announce an incoming train. A bright space with tall ceilings and smooth pillars, designed to look like arrow heads and blending into trails of light to reflect three-dimensional motion, allow for the station to be kept well-lit and visually indicates the platform edge.
Moscow Klenoviy Bulvar 2 Metro Station winner:
Remember, Moscow brought back the tradition of open architectural competitions for the design of metro stations in 2014 on the initiative of Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. This event was preceded by 4 other international competitions. The first competition helped design the Solntsevo and Novoperedelkino stations on the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya line, which opened in 2018. The others resulted in design solutions for the Mnevniki, Karamyshevskaya, Maryina Roscha, Rizhskaya, and Sokolniki stations, as well as for the Nagatinsky Zaton and Klenovy Bulvar stations on the Bolshaya Koltsevaya line.
The competition for development of the architectural appearance of the Prospekt Marshala Zhukova and Klenovy Bulvar 2 metro stations is the fifth such event. The number of applications broke all records and was 50% higher than the previous competition. As many as 330 potential contestants registered on the website. 113 of them (primarily from Russia) submitting applications. Italy led the foreign countries, with 8 companies in the competition.
Italy was followed by Great Britain, with 6 companies submitting applications. The other international competitors were companies from Spain, Latvia, the Netherlands, Japan (2 from each country), Hungary, Germany, China, Poland, and Uzbekistan (1 from each country). The competition had two stages. At the first stage, the expert jury headed by Andrey Bochkarev, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Policy and Construction, selected 5 finalists for each metro station based on their portfolios, relevant experience, and two essays (one per station).
Moscow Klenoviy Bulvar 2 Metro Station design by Zaha Hadid Architects:
Klenovy Bulvar 2 Metro – Shortlist
• Architectural Bureau KPLN LLC (Moscow, Russia); • Consortium led by Zaha Hadid Architects (London, UK), consortium members: A-project, Krost (Moscow, Russia); Arup Lighting (London, UK); Systematica s.l.r (Milan, Italy); • ABTB LLC (Moscow, Russia); • Blank Architects CJSC (Moscow, Russia); • Consortium led by Buro Vozduh (Moscow, Russia), consortium members: WP ARC Plan GmbH (Hannover, Germany).

Moscow Metro International Competition Winning Designs During their final meeting, the judges chose the winner for each station. The winning teams will have the opportunity to sign a contract to develop a booklet on the station’s architectural and urban planning solutions, which is needed in order to obtain a certificate of approval for the architectural and urban solution for a capital construction project and authorize the supervision of design and construction work based on their proposal.
About the competition objects
“Prospekt Marshala Zhukova” is an interchange station, connecting two Metro lines – Bolshaya Koltsevaya Line and Rublevo-Arkhangelskaya Line. The station will be located in the area of Khoroshevo-Mnevniki of the NorthWest Administrative Okrug (NWAO). It will be designated as a key transit point for residents of the district.
The station is located at the junction of Demyana Bednogo Street at the intersection with Marshall Zhukov Avenue. The station complex will be located on a section of the deep-lying Metro line. In accordance with the project, two singletrack tunnels approach the station, resulting in the station being designed with a single island transfer platform.
“Klenoviy bulvar 2” is an interchange station, part of the transport and transfer node formed by the Bolshaya Koltsevaya Line and the future Biryulevskaya Line. The station will be located in the Nagatinsky Zaton district of the Southern Administrative Okrug (SAO).
As well as the obvious transport and logistical advantages for residents of Nagatinsky Zaton, a feature of this station is to provide the necessary connectivity of Kuryanovo and Biryulevo districts, as well as convenient access to the Kolomenskoye Museum Reserve. The station is located at Klenoviy Boulevard at the intersection with Kolomenskaya Street, and the station complex will be located on a section of the subsurface Metro line. In accordance with the project, two single-track tunnels approach the station, resulting in the station being designed with a single island transfer platform.
