Once upon a time at the fifth of November it looked like this. 🍂
The two fern photos here are included in the print poll over at p a t r e o n!
Folks at the print collector tier can vote - get em in there before Saturday. (Three slots currently open at this limited tier!)
Maybe I should challenge myself again to go out with my camera and find some unexpected beauty in this melting and grey gloomy weather? 🍃

Since you had band practice after school, you and Eddie agreed (much to his dismay) that you would ride over to his trailer when you were finished, your club sometimes running later than intended.
The rain was pouring against your car window, wipers speeding back and forth to re-direct the rain to the corners where they didn’t fog your vision.
Although you loved November time, the downpours that regularly infiltrated Hawkins were not the nicest. Especially when you had to travel somewhere.
You pulled into Forest Hills Trailer Park, your wheels pushing through the stodgy, mud-flooded grass, taking a right turn and parking up next to Eddie’s infamous white and green van.
You open your door, the rain blowing directly into your face as you slam it shut, making a run for Eddie’s front door, which luckily had shelter covering the porch.
Even though Eddie persisted you enter his place freely, you were brought up with respect and manners. So, to not frighten your boyfriend or his uncle if he was home, you rapped three times against the wood, awaiting a response.
However, you receive none. You assumed it was the rain, Eddie most likely being in his room, perhaps meaning he couldn’t hear you over the beginning thunderstorm.
You tried again, your knuckles hitting against the wooden door, but neither Eddie nor Wayne responds.
Knowing that Eddie was home, you begin to throw your taught manners out of the window, entering the small trailer, your panic now rising.
“Baby?” you shout into the open space, “It’s only me, sweetheart!”
Yet, you’re still met with silence. Wayne always hung out in the living room, so he must’ve been working. But, Eddie never goes anywhere without his van. You always joked about how he was allergic to walking.
You quietly pace down the small hallway, twisting the handle to Eddie’s room to find the door locked. Pressing your ear against the wood, from inside, you can hear shallow breaths, your imagination running wild at the situation you had encountered many times in your life.
You were pretty sure that Eddie had anxiety, but the costs of getting a diagnosis were sky high. Not to mention the inaccuracies in the diagnostic criteria. Eddie was a charismatic, extroverted guy. You already had a sinking feeling that they would write it off as nothing.
You softly knock, making sure not to startle him, even if he already had heard your many knocks at the front door from beforehand. “Honey, it’s only me. If you can, can you unlock the door for me, please?”
However, there’s no scuffling of the feet, no movement, just the same rapid breaths.
“Fuck,” you grit out to yourself in a mumble, quickly thinking of a way to get through to him. You definitely weren’t gonna knock his door down, Wayne would be anything but impressed.
A lightbulb flickers in your head as you reach to the back of your hair, pulling out one of the bobby pins keeping your bun in place.
You bend it outwards and slot it into the lock, twisting and fiddling until you heard a click. You remove the bobby pin, grabbing the handle with your other hand and pulling it down, the door budging open.
You make sure to open it as slow as possible, not wanting to raise Eddie’s anxieties.
No matter how many times you’ve seen him in this state, it continues to break your heart every time. He’s sat in the corner of his room, legs crossed, arms folded over perched on his legs with his head positioned in the small gap he made for himself.
You rush over to him, kneeling down and softly speaking, “Baby, it’s me. You’re okay. You’re safe. Can you lift your head for me?”
His head rises from between his arms, tears streaming down his face, eyes red raw as his breathing remains rapid, him still not looking at you, staring off into the distance.
“Can I touch you or not?” you ask, to which he responds with a shake of the head, you shuffling back slightly to give him the space he needed. “Okay, we’re gonna do a deep breath in and out and then our technique. You ready?”
He doesn’t respond, but you know from experience that he wants to get out of the situation as quick as possible, the sinking feeling making him feel like utter shit.
“Okay, in,” you start, breathing in yourself so he can replicate you, which he does. “And, out,” you say, him letting the air flow out of his mouth, the anxieties moving out into the atmosphere.
“Okay, five things you can see baby,” you start, him finally moving his eyes from the fixated position in the distance. “Umm… You, my bed. Shit…” he mumbles, you reassuring him, “Take your time, it’s okay.”
“Uh… my magazine, Anthrax poster, and… Screaming for Vengeance.”
“Great, now breathe in and out again,” you say, the two of you inhaling and exhaling before you move onto your next question. “Good honey, good. Now, four things you can touch.”
“Umm…” he thinks, his breathing beginning to become more regulated, “You… again,” he shyly says, trying to come up with new answers, but knowing you were there was such a comfort for him. How could he not name you?
“The floor, my own arm, and… my dresser.”
“Good job. In and out,” you repeat, before moving on, his breath much more steady now, his answers becoming quicker and clearer. “Three things you can hear.”
“You… the rain and the birds,” he says, finally looking up into your eyes, whispering out, arms outstretched, “Can you hold my hands?”
You don’t say a word, simply slotting yours between his. His hands are clammy, covered in sweat. Not that you mind, of course, but it’s a reminder of how bad these hurt him. You wish you could just take it away, or take it on for yourself. You hated seeing him like this. It hurt a lot.
You don’t even need to tell him anymore, him closing his eyes and taking a deep breath in and out. “Two more to go, sweetheart. You’re almost there. Two things you can smell.”
“My cologne and your perfume.” Even though it was an anxiety calming exercise, his answer made you melt. His room had such an array of smells from smoke to the kebabs he ate last night, even to his weed. But, the only thing that mattered was the smell of the two of you. But, that’s what love is, right? Everything else sort of fades away, the only things existing being you and him.
He breathes in and out for the final time, you reminding him, “One thing you can taste.”
“The pizza I ate when I got home.”
“Great, amazing,” you say, the words of encouragement causing him to let out one big final sigh, him shaking his head as if to release the final anxieties and tension out of his brain.
“How we doing, my love? Scale of 1-10?”
“Better,” he replies, “Still feel like shit, but at least it’s not like that. A solid five, I suppose.”
“Explanation or distraction?” you ask softly, knowing that his answer differentiates by the day. Sometimes he is extremely open, telling you exactly the causation of the attack. Others he hides it in for a while, wanting to focus on something else to let his mind wander for a while, usually coming to you a couple days later explaining everything.
“Umm… Explanation is probably better,” he chuckles a little, “I mean, I’ll need to fix something anyway that caused this.”
“Okay,” you whisper, standing up and holding out a hand, using all your strength to pull him up off the floor. You both walk hand in hand over to his bed, taking a seat on the edge as you motion to him, “Arms up.”
He slowly drags them above his body, you taking off the Hellfire t-shirt that was clinging to his sweaty frame. This was practically a routine for you two now. You knew his attacks caused his entire body to become super sensitive, as well as the overwhelming heat that had overtaken him, so it was better for him to let himself breathe a little.
Not willing to leave his side, you shuffle behind him, removing the black scrunchie from your hair, the bun your hair was once styled in now being let free. Although full of knots, you grab the curls that framed his face, pulling them to the back of his head, wrapping them around your hand.
You press a gentle kiss to his shoulder, telling him, “Go ahead. I’m listening,” as you get to work on your styling task.
He sighs out, “I was trying to learn Raining Blood, and then the fuckin’ tape jammed up on me, not that I was doing so well anyway,” he critiques himself, you humming along, not so much in agreement, but in acknowledgement.
“So, I was already fuckin’ stressed as hell. Was putting Sweetheart back on her stand, and I just look up and look like absolute shit. Suppose it all just set me off.”
By the time he was finished explaining, his hair was now up in a messy bun, giving his neck some breathing room as you wrap your arms around his torso, pressing another kiss to his shoulder.
“You’ve heard of the phrase ‘practice makes perfect,’ right?” you ask him, about to go on one of your insightful conversations.
He hums in response, “’Course I have. Why?”
“Well, you ever thought about the pressure that inadvertently gives you?” you ask, Eddie looking a little confused at your thought. Although, he’s certain he’ll understand by the end. He was accustomed to your weird, but enlightening sentiments that you randomly blurted out in your life. It was one of the many things he loved and adored about you.
“Like, the pressure that you have to keep going and going until you mastered something to upmost perfection. As if you can play a solo as amazingly as Brian May, despite him creating it to his playing ability? Perfect doesn’t exist, it really doesn’t. It’s simply what another person perceives.”
He turns around, now facing you, your arms flailing about as you ramble your insight out, “You know when you play guitar for someone and you mess up, and when you point it out, the other person usually goes ‘Oh, I never even noticed?’ That’s perception. That’s how every single thought and action you make in your life plays out.”
You take his hands in yours, sighing as you twiddle with his thumbs, “I’ve been doing some reflecting lately sweetheart, and it’s made me realise a lot. A hell of a lot,” you scoff, slightly shaking your head as you think of the ways the world works.
“A pro-guitarist will notice your mistake and critique you on it, a non-guitarist will not even take notice. And honestly, the same applies for anything, everything you do is down to the interpretation of someone else. I’ll give you example, my love.”
“Okay,” he responds, looking into your eyes, slowly beginning to understand your train of thought. “Say a girl, around our age, walked down the street. She was dressed very feminine, blonde hair, blue eyes, just an extremely sunny-looking person. She walked past you and went ‘Hey, I really like your style.’ Would you feel that she is complimenting you or mocking you?”
Eddie simply sits there in astonishment. He knew what his immediate reaction would be considering the general consensus around his pure existence in Hawkins. “Umm… Yeah, I would assume mocking. Of course I would. Everyone in this town fucking hates me, sweetheart.”
“But, you assumed the same when you met me, didn’t you? When I told you that you seemed cool.”
“Shit…” he mumbles out, letting his head fall into the crook of your shoulder, “I think I see where you’re going with this…”
“You were wrong, because I always meant it, I still do now. I love you to pieces, baby,” you say, lifting his head up and cupping his cheeks, “So, knowing that you perceived me as being negative when I wasn’t, who’s to say that the voices in your head aren’t also wrong?”
You stroke his cheek with your thumb, moving your right hand to sit comfortably on his thigh, “I think you’re beautiful, Wayne thinks you’re beautiful, your friends think you’re beautiful. Nobody, your friends and I especially, chose you for no reason. We love you, and we thought you were the coolest person on the planet, so we chose to start a relationship with you, whether that be platonic or romantic.”
He leans his forehead against yours, trying not to let the tears spill down his cheeks again. Although, this time would be out of complete appreciation and happiness, rather than solemness.
“So, whenever you look at yourself in that mirror and think ‘I look like shit,’ you have to tell those voices they are wrong. I think you look pretty as shit right now,” you say, kissing the underside of his jaw. “That’s for one. Two, tell those voices, ‘Fuck you, because I have a girlfriend that thinks I’m hot as hell and a bunch of friends who chose me and find me extremely cool.’ Because, the more we spend time with ourselves, the more we fall into critiques. But, if we remember who chose us, we’ll think of many more positives to ourselves.”
“Jesus, how did I score myself the smartest girl on Planet Earth?” he questions, you giggling as you lean back, getting off of the bed and holding out your hand, “C’mere.”
He doesn’t question anything, taking your hand as you lead him over to his mirror.
You stand beside him, you squeezing his hand as you say, “What would you say is your favourite hobby? If you had to pick one.”
He chuckles, “Jesus babe, that’s like choosing a favourite child,” you laughing as you remind him, “Well, parents do secretly have a favourite child.”
He squints his eyes, deep in thought before looking down, “Sorry Sweetheart, D&D takes the reign on that one.”
You frown, looking at the guitar itself before looking back up at your boyfriend, “She’ll be okay. She can handle the critique.” You smile, “Okay, now what do you specifically like about D&D?”
And as if like clockwork, you grin proudly as Eddie starts to list off his reasons. “I get to create cool campaigns, and have complete control over every design. Like, I could choose a Demogorgon for one campaign, but then Vecna for my next one. The extremes can be insane. Also, I get to hang out with my friends, and have a great fuckin’ laugh. We get really enthusiastic about it, y’know? And yeah, just… good times.”
You look up at him softly, hugging his arm as you say, “See? Was that so hard?”
He gazes down at you, before simply speaking without words, cupping both of your cheeks and pulling you in for a long kiss. You wrap your arms around his neck, almost feeling the love and appreciation through his lips. Once the two of you apart, you lean your foreheads against each other once again, Eddie’s lips not deciding whether they want to remain in a shocked state or creep up into a smile.
“Shit… I love you,” he blurts out, those being the first words to show his sign of appreciation, “I just… Thank you. I really don’t deserve you— Wait, fuck, yes I do. What am I talking about? Of course I fuckin’ do,” he rambles, placing a quick peck to your lips again.
The pair of you giggle like school children, both of your hands cupping the other’s cheeks, the closeness feeling like a warm home. “What I am trying to say is I love what you just did. Do you know how many years I have beat myself up for stupid shit? I’ll have one zit on my face and think my life is fuckin’ over. But, you won’t care, Gareth won’t care, Dustin won’t care, nobody will care. The only people who will care will be the ones that already fuckin’ hate me with a passion.”
You nod as you remain leant against his forehead, him continuing his own rant, “I could do anything for the people that hate me, and they would still hate me. Hell, I could join the fuckin’ basketball team and Jason would still bully me.”
“Exactly baby, now you’re getting it,” you say, “And, if someone came up to me and said I looked like shit, you would give them hell for it, right?”
“’Course I would. You’re the prettiest, most beautiful girl on Earth. They’re blind if they can’t see that.”
You lean back, moving your arms to around his neck, his falling to your waist, “So, why not do the same to yourself? When those voices start bullying you in your head, you just go ‘Fuck off, that’s not true. I’m a good person and I have people in my life who can prove that.’”
He nods in response, “Yeah, shit, yeah… Yeah, I’ll start doing that. Fuck… Thank you sweetheart, I love you so goddamn much.”
You give him another peck on the lips, “I love you too. But do remember, this isn’t gonna be a linear thing. This will sometimes bite you in the ass. So, if you ever find a day where you can’t fight the voices, call me and I’ll come do the work for you, okay?”
He hums in response, the anxieties finally gone. It was always gonna be you that helped him. Even if this was an inner healing thing, he wouldn’t have been able to do it without you. And that’s why he’s made a promise to never let you go, no matter what happens. He’s gonna marry you one day, get to show off a ring on his finger as proof, because you were a part of him, and he was a part of you, and he never wants that to change.
i hope you enjoyed!! again, lmk if anything is inaccurate in the comments!!

That is invaluable information, and a level of attention to detail of which I can only dream tbh. So, in that spirit, I went back and replayed the whole of June and half of July, to get a complete calendar of Akechi interactions. Here's what I learned:
Apart from Saturday, there doesn't seem to be any real "you can find him on these days" schedule. Between June 10th (confidant 1) and July 12th (the date I got confidant 5 on my live playthrough), there are 9 days when you can find Akechi in Kichijoji, and those days are as follows:
all three possible Saturdays;
3 out of 4 possible Wednesdays. The other, 6/15, is rained off—though he doesn't show up even if you're doing confidant 2 rather than 3, and of course he shows up for confidant 2 on 6/13 in the rain;
once each on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday;
never on Friday or Sunday.
The week of 6/13 only has one day when you can find him—the Monday, when you can get confidant 2 and then he vanishes for the rest of the week. If you (say) don't get confidant 2 on 6/13, he still won't show up on 6/15 (his regular Wednesday slot) to offer it again;
The weeks of 6/27 and 7/4 each have two opportunities to meet him;
The week of 6/20, on the other hand, has three opportunities, and he will text you twice;
Once you're time-locked on the confidant, he will no longer appear in Kichijoji, and he will not text you to hang out;
If he's not time-locked, he always texts on Saturdays, so it looks like you're his big night out. Heavens, Akechi, the wild life you do lead.
so does he vanish for months in the summer?
Over in this post, I talked about how Akechi vanishes for most of September and October, in the runup to Joker's murder. There just appear to be no plot notes that bring the two of you together.
If you do confidant 5 on 7/2, and confidant 6 when it unlocks on 9/3, that looks like another two-month gap—but actually, there are various choreographed events that break it up:
train station meetings on 7/11, 7/20 and 9/2;
the lunch with Yoshizawa on 7/11;
the Medjed meeting with the PTs on 7/18;
the aquarium date on 7/29;
there is then a month's gap before the Leblanc trauma dump on 8/28—interesting, since this mostly overlaps with Futaba's Palace. Which Akechi doesn't know about, so it looks like they've vanished as planned.
So they have a lot going on in July even apart from the confidant. But in August, in the summer, they're out of each other's hair, until he comes back for 8/28 and confidant 6. What's going on? Is this actually a longer disconnect of three months after confidant 5, broken up by setting up the Okumura plot? Does he think Joker gave up as he predicted, when faced with a difficult opponent like Medjed? (disappointing) Is it something else entirely? Or does he just have a busy August?
@pugs-cats-bb-8 mentions in their tags that September and October are Akechi's worst months for availability, which corresponds with his vanishing from the plot for those two months as shit falls apart. If August, by contrast, really is the best time to find him, it suggests he's not intentionally avoiding you then so much as the plot is just not throwing you together.
It looks like, in theory, confidant stages 2-5 are meant to be done by the end of July, when the game schedules a lot of other social stuff for you.
here's the calendar
June M T W T F S S 06 07 08 09 ! 11 12 * 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 x * 24 x 26 27 28 * 30
July M T W T F S S 01 x 03 04 05 * 07 08 x 10 11 *
x—days when Akechi texts you to hang out. *—days when you can find Akechi in Kichijoji, but no text. !—the TV studio. Confidant 1.
Days when the game will always stop you doing anything in the evening (and so you could never meet anyone) are struck out.
Days in red are days he didn't appear in this replay (where I nailed all the dates), but did appear in my real, current playthrough (where I'm about a week behind). Note that 7/9 itself is one of these days—if you get confidant 5 on 7/2, he will not then face you on 7/9 after his tantrum.
Here's a summary list of events:
6/10 Friday—the TV studio. Confidant 1.
6/13 Monday—available in Kichijoji. Confidant 2.
6/22 Wednesday—he texts you in the evening. Confidant 3.
6/23 Thursday—available in Kichijoji. (no rank up)
6/25 Saturday—he texts you in the evening. Confidant 4.
6/29 Wednesday—available in Kichijoji. (no rank up)
7/2 Saturday—he texts you in the evening. Confidant 5.
7/6 Wednesday—available in Kichijoji. (but not if rank 5)
7/9 Saturday—he texts you in the evening. (but not if rank 5)
7/12 Tuesday—available in Kichijoji. (but not if rank 5)
also, we dreamed of him
Also, playing back to check certain days I missed to voluntary Metaverse activity, I found out you can go to bed early and have a dream that raises your stats or your confidants! So that's worth knowing. If you got this far down, here are some entertaining dreams.
"I dreamed that I was being chased by a gigantic Akechi... I'm glad that was just a dream."
"I dreamed that Akechi and I went to the beach, but the waves washed away my swimming trunks... I'm glad that was just a dream."
"I had a dream where I was in a quiet café, asking Akechi for advice... I feel a little closer to Akechi."
I think you may have a better chance of getting "good dreams" if you are ranked higher with the confidant.

Kaiser-Fleetwings XBTK-1 at Bristol PA 1945
In early 1942 the U.S. Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer) was planning the replacements for the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver dive bomber and the Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bomber. The aircraft was to carry the torpedo in an internal bomb bay. By late 1943 it became obvious that the proposed VBT design like the Douglas SB2D had drastically increased in size and weight. Therefore the U.S. Navy was initiating a smaller dive bomber design. The BuAer recognized the engineering workload for the major wartime programs and therefore assigned the design to companies without a major wartime production. BuAer selected Fleetwings at Bristol, Pennsylvania (USA), which was acquired by Henry J. Kaiser in 1943.
The XBK dive bomber program was initiated in February 1944 with a contract for two prototypes. To keep the airplane size down it was decided that all stores would be carried externally. A radar could be carried underneath the left wing. The dive brakes were of the lower and upper picket fence type at the inboard wing trailing edge. The horizontal tail was mounted on the tail fin above the fuselage. This feature avoided empennage buffet when the dive brakes were open. Unusual was the placement of the engine exhausts almost aft of the cockpit. It was hoped that this feature would significantly decrease drag, A mockup inspection without engine was carried out in April 1944 while the engine was installed in May 1944, with completion of the first prototype scheduled for November 1944.To speed up later production the U.S. Navy even constructed a new airfield at the Fleetwing plant. In early 1945 BuAer requested that the plane would be able to carry a torpedo. The weapon was fitted to a new centreline station and the designation was changed to XBTK. The first XBTK-1 was finally completed in March 1945,making its first flight on 12 April 1945.
The flight testing revealed inadequate engine cooling and severe fuselage vibration. Resolution of these problems and the replacement of the R-2800-22W engine, which was already out of production, by the -34 delayed restart of flight trials until July 1945. The aircraft was delivered to the US Navy Naval Air Test Center (NATC) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland (USA), in August 1945 for evaluation. After the end of the Second World War the US Navy cut orders from 20 to 10 aircraft. NATC recommended replacement of the novel exhaust system with a more normal system, as the cockpit temperature was very high and cockpit egress and access after an engine shutdown was extremely difficult. It also noted that stall performance was poor, particularly with power off. It was noted, however, that diving characteristics were superior to any dive-bomber in service or under development. The plane was transported back to Fleetwings where redesign began. The second production aircraft first flew in March 1946 and featured built-in leading edge slots which greatly improved the stall performance of the aircraft. However, by early 1946 procurement of new planes was drastically cut down and the BTK found its role already filled by the Douglas AD Skyraider and Martin AM Mauler. In May 1946 it was decided to complete five airframes already in production. Continued testing revealed problems when the aircraft was spun, and the US Navy finally terminated the contract on 3 September 1946, as there was no need for the aircraft anymore. The five prototypes were scrapped.

Why Harry Styles Just Scored His First No. 1 Song
Like any boy band alumnus, he first had to overcome radio’s bias against teen heartthrobs.
Late summer is a great time for sleeper hits: songs that have been hanging around the charts for months and finally hit their stride. Four years ago, in August 2016, Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” reached No. 1 after knocking around the charts since the prior winter, getting its final boost from a Sean Paul remix. In September 2018, Maroon 5’s year-old “Girls Like You” slipped into the top slot after wafting around the Top 10 for more than four months, with a Cardi B verse putting it over the edge. Last year around Labor Day, Lizzo finally topped the Hot 100 with “Truth Hurts,” a song that was two years old and had been rising gradually on the chart since the spring.
This year’s sleeper hit is “Watermelon Sugar,” a wisp of a song by boy bander–turned–self-styled rock star Harry Styles. With a name inspired by Richard Brautigan’s hippie-era, post-apocalyptic novella In Watermelon Sugar, Styles’ lackadaisical tune is not only a sleeper but a grower, the sort of hit that sneaks up on you—I wasn’t sure it even had a fully written chorus the first time I heard it, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. Indeed, the whole nation took its time deciding that this quirky ditty would give the starriest, most eccentric member of One Direction his first-ever U.S. chart-topper.
youtube
“Watermelon Sugar” is the third single promoted from Styles’ second solo album Fine Line, which was released last December. That alone is remarkable, given the challenge in the digital age of generating chart interest in anything other than an album’s first couple of singles. Generally, in an era when all of an album’s songs are available to be consumed the day the album drops, you need a remix or a special guest of some kind to gin up chart action months after the song first hits streaming. “Sugar” has none of those. To be sure, there was some gimmickry fueling the song’s leap to the top, albeit of an old-fashioned kind: The song had its best week of sales ever thanks to an assortment of limited-edition vinyl and cassette singles that came bundled with a digital download. Those sales got “Sugar” the last mile on the charts, but Columbia Records wouldn’t have put the physical goods on sale if the song wasn’t already a radio smash—“Sugar” currently has the second-biggest U.S. airplay audience—and they knew they had an opening between current hits by Taylor Swift and a pair of lascivious female rappers I’ll almost certainly be writing about in this space next week. So, fair play to Team Harry: They took advantage of an open chart window, a tactic as old as the Hot 100 itself.
As “Sugar” leaps from No. 7 to No. 1 on the Hot 100 this week—essentially switching places with his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan,” which falls to No. 8—Styles scores only the second-ever chart-topper by a member of One Direction. That includes all of the hits by 1D itself. In its five years of recording, from 2011 through 2015, the band never scored a Hot 100 No. 1. This despite topping the Billboard 200 album chart with its first four studio albums, the only group in history to launch a career with that haul. So … what was that other 1D-affiliated Hot 100–topper I mentioned? It was by ex-member Zayn Malik, the only member to break from the crew while it was still active. Zayn’s smoldering, Weeknd-esque boudoir jam “Pillowtalk” debuted at No. 1—and spent a solitary week there—in the winter of 2016, fueled by blockbuster streams and downloads ginned up by 1D superfans still mourning his departure the prior year and the group’s resulting, presumably permanent hiatus.
Explaining how the top-selling boy band of the 2010s could shift so many CDs and downloads but generate only two No. 1 singles means briefly recapping the fraught history of boy bands and the charts. Selling albums has never been hard for pinup pop groups, since the days of Meet the Beatles! and More of the Monkees. And in the ’70s and ’80s, such precision sing-and-dance troupes as the Jackson 5, the Osmonds, and New Edition managed to generate both gold albums and chart-conquering singles. In 1989, New Kids on the Block had the year’s second-biggest album and four of the year’s top singles, including a pair of No. 1s. But starting in the ’90s, as U.S. radio networks consolidated (fueled by the 1996 Telecommunications Act) and programmers more narrowly targeted specific demographics, radio stations shied away from maximalist teen-pop that appealed primarily to under-18 audiences. By the end of that decade, even as boy bands were enjoying a new wave of TRL-fueled popularity, radio became a chart handicap for them. The Backstreet Boys and ’N Sync had the top-selling albums of 1999 and 2000, respectively—the diamond-selling Millennium and No Strings Attached—but only scored a solitary Hot 100 topper between them, ’N Sync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” (Backstreet never hit No. 1: The deathless “I Want It That Way” peaked at No. 6.)
This radio bias against boy bands has persisted into the 21st century. And ever since the Hot 100 went digital about a decade and a half ago, teen-pop’s chart placements have been the result of a battle between rabid downloaders and radio gatekeepers—massive digital sales compensating for modest radio play. For example, radio was what kept the Jonas Brothers from scoring any chart-topping hits during their original wave of teen idoldom; their biggest hit of the ’00s, the No. 5 hit “Burnin’ Up,” sold 2 million downloads but only ranked 55th at U.S. radio. By the ’10s, the same fate befell one-man boy band Justin Bieber. In this long-running Slate series, I have chronicled the blow-by-blow between Justin Bieber and radio programmers that swung from Justin as hit-starved teen idol in the early ’10s to dominant young-adult chart-dominator in the late ’10s. In the early ’10s period, Bieber was a YouTube and iTunes demigod with not a single radio smash to his name. He could sell a half-million downloads of “Boyfriend” in a week and still fall short of the No. 1 spot, thanks (no thanks) to radio.
For One Direction, the chart patterns were the same. A Frankenstein’s monster that Simon Cowell famously threw together in 2010 on his televised competition The X Factor from five solo competitors—Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson—1D continually found its singles dragged down on the Hot 100 by radio, even as the band sold truckloads of albums. The pattern was set in fall 2012 when “Live While We’re Young” debuted with a staggering 341,000 downloads but could only get to No. 3 on the Hot 100, thanks to its 50th-ranked radio airplay. In the summer of 2013, the slyly Who-interpolating “Best Song Ever” became 1D’s highest-charting hit ever, debuting at No. 2 with record video views and near-record downloads, but at radio it never got past No. 53. “Story of My Life” (No. 6, 2014), “Drag Me Down” (No. 3, 2015)—no matter how many downloads sold or videos viewed, 1D could never top the Hot 100 so long as its radio spins remained limited.
The reason I’m running down all of this granular chart data is it reveals the hurdles both 1D and its post-breakup soloists had to overcome to top the Hot 100. Like Justin Bieber, they had to become credible radio fodder with adults as well as kids. With his early break from the group, Zayn was the first to pull this off. Though “Pillowtalk” debuted at No. 1 largely due to massive sales and streams, the carnal song did eventually become a No. 4–ranked airplay hit. Cleverly, Zayn had chosen a then-current EDM-inflected R&B mode and dropped his debut while the Weeknd was between albums. Other former 1D-ers have had their share of solid radio hits, including Liam Payne’s hip-hop–inflected “Strip That Down” featuring Quavo of Migos (No. 10 on the Hot 100, No. 4 on Radio Songs) and Niall Horan’s softly bopping pop jam “Slow Hands” (No. 11 Hot 100, No. 2 Radio Songs).
And Harry Styles? He decided to make things harder on himself. His 2017 debut album was chockablock with old-school classic rock. This would be like launching a career in 1964 with big-band jazz. While Styles’ fame ensured a big launch for his Bowie-esque single “Sign of the Times”—it opened, and peaked, at No. 4 on the Hot 100, fueled by strong downloads—radio showed only moderate interest. It eventually reached a modest No. 21 on the airplay chart. Later Harry singles like the twangy “Two Ghosts” and the thrashy “Kiwi” missed the Hot 100 and had little radio profile beyond a handful of pure-pop stations that were loyal to Styles from his 1D days. One admired Harry for following his artistic muse—more Joni Mitchell than Justin Bieber—but as a pop star, he arguably squandered his momentum coming out of One Direction.
What has made Fine Line, Styles’ sophomore album, such a clever left turn is he retained the rock flavor he naturally gravitates toward but converted it into mellow California-style surf-pop, and he let his production team—Tyler Johnson and Thomas “Kid Harpoon” Hull—fashion the songs into percolating radio jams. Each single has opened the door a bit wider: “Lights Up,” a No. 17 last October, is lightly strummed beach music with ethereal backing vocals. And “Adore You,” a No. 6 hit in April (for my money, still Styles’ best single), is thumping electropop. “Adore” in particular served as Styles’ entrée onto radio’s A-list—it reached No. 1 on mainstream Top 40 stations and No. 2 on Radio Songs by early summer.
With this beachhead established, Harry was finally free to let his freak flag fly with “Watermelon Sugar,” which is simultaneously his oddest single and his most infectious. The chorus consists of nothing more than the line “Watermelon sugar high” repeated a half-dozen or more times, with emphasis on the “HIGH.” (TikTok users have keyed into this idiosyncrasy, sharing videos in which the “high” gets its own video edit of the user playacting her best stoner face.) Last November, when Styles did double-duty hosting and singing on Saturday Night Live, “Sugar” was one of the songs he performed, and in that indoor setting, it came off as willfully quirky and seasonally incongruous; the song’s first verse line is “Tastes like strawberries on a summer evenin’.” Now, timed for 2020’s beach season—complete with a video filled with beautiful people on the shore, shot just before the pandemic and, according to a title card, “dedicated to touching”—it’s sitting atop the hit parade.
In short, Harry Styles finally has a profile on the radio and on the Hot 100 that matches his profile on magazine covers, and he achieved it on his own schedule and something like his own terms. Like John Lennon in the ’70s—the founder and nominal leader of the Beatles but the last former Fab to reach the toppermost of the poppermost as a solo artist—Styles just had to find his own way. As that onetime teen heartthrob sang, “Whatever gets you to the light, it’s all right.”

Acoustic Treatment Update
*Project direction has diverged from building a diffuser to bass trapping / absorption*
Reasons that informed this decision:
I intend to complete this project with a piece of acoustic treatment that provides utility in my work-space, which most of the time is an unideal setting for production. This treatment also needs have a degree of portability, as my home-production environment will frequently change over coming years.
Diffusion vs absorption: Diffusion & absorption are similar in objective, but differ in application. Diffusers work to reduce localised reflections by evenly scattering sound waves throughout a space, whilst absorption provides a porous medium to absorb and dampen sound. (soundwaves are absorbed and lose energy) [1,2]. Diffusion lends itself towards mid - high frequencies due to the relationship between smaller wavelengths and the attributes of moderately-sized diffusers, whilst absorption is effective across the board, especially for low frequencies.
Low frequency build up is a common issue presented by the nature of small, untreated rooms. These low frequencies (Sub-250Hz) are difficult to manage due to their large wave length, high energy, and omnidirectional behaviour [3,4]. This low frequency build-up is common along hard surfaces like ceilings, walls and corners; bass traps occupy the corners of a space, providing effective echo reduction through its materials dense, absorbent composition.
It is important to attend to low frequency issues first, as otherwise treatment approaches focused towards higher ranges will be less effective, hence I have chosen to switch to an absorbent approach/ bass trapping.
Portability & Simply assembly:
Acoustic treatment is generally not portable in design and often requires permanent changes to a room. My design aims to be easily transportable whilst simple to install. To fasten the treatment into a corner, it features a counterpressure-dependant mechanism extending from the top face.
For transport / portability the bass traps slot together and fasten with a connecting strap, which passes through the ends and centre of each.
The name bass trap is rather misleading as low frequencies are never really trapped or fully absorbed, but rather lose energy and divert in direction in relation to the sound source. We want to transform / dissipate as much of this low frequency energy as possible, using as little space and material as possible; we don’t want an enormous, heavy piece of treatment. This is where the materials and dimensions of the design come into play.
The dimensions and composition of the treatment determines the frequencies it can absorb, so it is crucial that this aspect is done correctly as to ensure frequencies are actually losing energy when they meet the treatment, opposed to just passing through or reflecting. What this means for low frequencies is that we generally require a larger, thicker/more dense treatment, in order to effectively manage their high energy and large wavelength. The material is key, as specific membranes lend themselves in favor of specific frequency bands;
Porous materials come in 2 forms, each providing slightly different utility[5,6].
Open cell membranes
Open cell structure allows sound to easily permeate
Aerated structure, cells are connected
Light weight , cheap, accessible
Useful for trapping sound, absorbing reflections
Less effective for low frequencies
Closed Cell membranes
Closed cell structure effectively absorbs & dampens sound
Dense composition & more surface area
Particularly useful for low frequencies
Some commonly used examples of porous acoustic materials:

Foam

Fibreglass acoustic panel. Retrived from https://m.made-in-china.com/product/Studio-Acoustic-Panels-Fiberglass-Acoustic-Wool-Panel-866917445.html
I am yet to decide on the specifics of my material, although I am leaning towards foams as they're cheap and accessible.
Identifying the problem areas:
As we know, the size & shape of a room directly impacts how sound behaves within it, thus it is important to identify what frequencies are being exaggerated or cancelled out as a result of reflections and resonances. We can identify this in a few different ways:
Pink noise test:
Pink noise consists of the entire audible frequency spectrum (20Hz - 20Khz) playing at equal amplitude[7].
The test involves playing pink noise from one or various high-fidelity monitors, and moving around the room to determine problematic areas through your perceived change in sound. From here we are able to asses where different forms of treatment are appropriate.
Calculating what frequencies correspond to the size of you room:
If the size of a room directly corresponds to the length of a wave, that frequency may reflect at the angle of inception and reinforce the initial wave. This largely contributes to counter-productive reflections that exaggerate a relative band of the frequency spectrum, disrupting the stereo image and sound-source clarity.
We can calculate what frequencies our room is exaggerating by measuring the length of the room and finding what wavelength corresponds. Wavelength is calculated by dividing the speed of sound -1,130ft/second - by the frequency -(X)hz, so, a 40hz wave (1,130/40 = 28.25) has a wavelength of 28.5ft, meaning that it would reproduce greatly in a room around 28.5ft.[8]. Thus, if we divide the speed of sound by our room length, we have the resonating frequency.
As part of ensuring the bass traps effectiveness, it must be positioned 1/4 of the given frequency's wavelength away from the corner. This is referred to as the 'quarter wavelength rule', in which describes the point of highest amplitude and energy of a sound wave[9]. It is considered to be the ideal placement for treatment to have significant impact on the strength/ energy of a wave. So, utilizing our prior example, if our wavelength is 28.5ft long (28.5/4=7.125), theoretically our treatment should be 7.125 ft from the wall / thick. Now, while this is not a practical example, the principle is the same; this is why treatment for very low frequencies (sub100) usually requires pressure-reactive devices such as Helmholtz resonators or diaphragmatic absorbers[10,11].

Blockbuster composer Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, talks to Gemma Gracewood about composing for titans, his pride in Dutch cinema, friendship with George Miller and longing for Olivia Newton-John. Plus: his Letterboxd Life in Film and why he’s selling his prized collection of recording gear.
It has been a spectacular spring for Tom Holkenborg, the Dutch musician also known as Junkie XL, who has crafted the scores for multiplex fare such as Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Terminator: Dark Fate, Sonic the Hedgehog and the upcoming zombie banger Army of the Dead. Only weeks apart, two blockbusters landed on screens with his sonic stamp all over them: Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong and Zack Snyder’s re-realized Justice League.
Thankfully, the Godzilla vs. Kong score was complete by the time the Justice League telephone rang. Holkenborg—who had lost the Justice League gig along with Snyder the first time around—knew the Snyder cut was coming; he had closely watched the growing calls for it online. “Zack and I already started talking in 2019. He’s like, ‘What if we were to finish this? What would it take?’ Those conversations turned to ‘Well, how many recording days potentially do you need and how much of an orchestra do you potentially need?’ Finally, somewhere in April 2020, that’s when that phone call came: ‘Okay, light’s green, start tomorrow, and start running until it’s done because it’s four and a half hours’.”
Ray Fisher as Cyborg in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’.
Holkenborg approaches the titanic task of blockbuster film scoring with an engineer’s mindset: “Building a fantastic, huge house with 20 bedrooms and the dance hall and the kitchen… You’re not going to start by building the third bathroom for the third guest room, right?” Once he has identified the scenes that are most important to his directors—for Snyder, they included the introduction of Cyborg, three fight set-pieces, and a scene of The Flash running that comes towards the end of the film—the composer identifies instrumental “colors” in order to build a theme around each character. Then he holds some of those colors back, theorizing that “if you want like an, ‘Oh!’ experience by looking at a painting that has a huge amount of bright yellow in it, it’s way more successful to see fifteen paintings in front of it, where yellow is absent.”
The Godzilla vs. Kong score satisfies Holkenborg’s life-long love of both characters. “I don’t have a preference for either one. I love them both for various different reasons.” Their respective histories fascinate him: Godzilla as a way to make sense of Japan’s nuclear fall-out, and Kong as a gigantic spectacle that ended up attracting the sympathies of the audiences he was supposed to scare. Even when the science makes no sense (“what the fuck are plasma boosters, anyway?!”), Holkenborg is still happy to wax lyrical about the emotional depth of Kong’s stories, the elaborate concepts of the Godzilla-verse, and his musical approach to the pair—dark, moving brass for Godzilla, with synthesized elements “because he is a half-synthesized animal”, and a more organic, complex orchestration for Kong, featuring “one of the world’s bigger bass drums”.
Adam Wingard’s ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’.
All of this seat-shaking bombast is composed on an “insanely massive sound system” in Holkenborg’s small home studio (though he reassures pandemic-stricken film lovers that he has recently seen both Godzilla vs. Kong and Justice League on his laptop—and “really enjoyed watching it like that”). The process, he says, was “pretty intense”, but only in terms of the sheer amount of score needed. Composing in quarantine was not much different from his usual workflow. “I’m a pretty lonesome cruiser anyway. Composing, by nature, is like a solo exercise—obviously with assistance.”
Like many creatives (Bong Joon-ho recently told a film studies class that he is up at 5:00am most days to watch a movie), Holkenborg is an early riser, waking by 4:00am. “I’m super sharp between like 4 or 5:00am and 9:00am, so I like to do a lot of creative work in that slot.” He takes care of business until mid-afternoon, when another creative spurt happens. “And then I have another batch of calls usually to make, and then around 8:30pm, I’m going to retire for the rest of the day and just chill out a little bit and watch stuff that I want to see, read things that I want to read. Right now I’m studying Portuguese.” By 10:30pm, he’s asleep. “And then at three o’clock I get up.” (Needless to say, Holkenborg’s children are no longer small.)
The pandemic simplified a lot of things for a lot of people: for Holkenborg, it has been a moment to tidy up the physical side of his work. In November last year, he opened an online shop to divest the bulk of his gear—synths, pedals, guitars, drum machines and much more—that he has been collecting since the late 1970s. When friends told him he’d regret it, he disagreed. “At some point I’m going to die. I can’t take them to the afterlife. I also found out I don’t need them. I love to have them around, but I don’t need them.”
Tom Holkenborg with the bass drum used in the ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ score.
It certainly solves the question of what he’d take if his house was on fire. “The hard drives with sounds and music over the last 40 years, 45 years, that’s hard to replace. So, that would be it. I’m just thinking about things that are absolutely irreplaceable and there are not that many, really.” Alas, it’s bad news for that bass drum. “I can’t take that with me when the house is on fire. Unfortunately, it’s going to make the house burn longer.”
Anyone who has interviewed or spent time with Holkenborg will agree: he may be a lonesome cruiser, but he is also personable, funny, loves to settle in for a chat. As he lights his second or third cigarette in readiness for his Life in Film questionnaire, I’m curious about his relationships with the esteemed filmmakers he has worked with—who include his mentor, Hans Zimmer, directors Sir Peter Jackson, Tim Miller, Robert Rodriguez and, especially, Fury Road’s George Miller.
The story of how Holkenborg scored Mad Max: Fury Road bears retelling: that George Miller did not want a soundtrack (“he was convinced that the orchestration of sounds of the cars would be enough to carry the whole movie”), that Holkenborg was only brought in to create a little something for the Coma-Doof Warrior’s flame-throwing guitar, that they hit it off, the job grew, and grew, into a score that covers almost the entire film.
The Coma-Doof Warrior in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015).
What is his best memory of Fury Road? “Well, obviously, when I saw the movie for the first time and I was like ‘what the hell am I looking at?’,” he laughs. “What I mostly look back on is the friendship that I developed with George and the film school one-on-one that I got admitted to, while being paid at the same time, to study with somebody like him. We would talk all night about all kinds of things and nothing, because that really defines our relationship so much—a joint interest in so many different things.”
Happily, Holkenborg and Miller are working together again, on Three Thousand Years of Longing. “It’s really great to be in that process with him again. It’s just like about pricking each other with a little needle. It’s like, ‘Oh, why are you saying that?’ We do that with each other to keep each other sharp. ‘Oh, but if you’re doing this, I’m going to be doing that.’ And then, ‘Oh, if you’re doing that, I’m going to be doing this.’ So it’s really interesting.”
What is your favorite Godzilla film?
Tom Holkenborg: 1989’s Godzilla vs. Biollante. It’s a very obscure one where he’s basically fighting a giant rose. Let’s not look for the logic there.
Why has that particular Godzilla captured your heart? It’s so corny. Yeah. Mothra vs. Godzilla is also great. Mothra looks like a very bad Arabian carpet that was imported through customs and it got delivered by FedEx completely ruined and then laid outside for like four weeks in the rain.
‘Godzilla vs. Biollante’ (ゴジラvsビオラン, 1989).
What is the first film you remember seeing in a cinema? Bambi. I was six years old, yeah.
And is there a film you have fond memories of watching with your family—a movie that became a family favorite? Not, like, a family favorite because our opinions were too diverse for that, but the next movie that became very important to me when I was a little older was Saturday Night Fever. I thought the soundtrack was, like, groundbreaking, mind-blowingly insane. It’s not necessarily those three massive beats of the Bee Gees on there, but all these other really alternative, left-field tracks by bands like Kool & the Gang. And the way that that darker disco music played against that really dark movie about what it’s like to live in New York and become a competitive dancer, it’s incredible. And still, today, it’s one of the movies where film music and the film itself had so much impact on me, even though it’s not a traditional film score in that sense. It’s incredible.
What is the film that made you want to work in movies, given that you also have a whole musical career separate from movies? (Enjoy Junkie XL’s early 2000s remix of Elvis Presley’s ‘A Little Less Conversation’.) For me, the move from a traditional artist into film scoring was a very slow gradual process. There’s not one movie that pushed me over the cliff. It’s just, like, all the great movies that were made. And I still have a list of obscure movies, classic movies that I need to see.
Yesterday I saw the weirdest of all, but I do want to share this: the original, uncut R-rated version of Caligula, [from] 1979. He [director Tinto Brass] was notoriously brutal and he organized orgies and had terrible torturing techniques. But it’s really weird, there’s Shakespearean actors in there, and then it goes to full-on porn sections. It’s really weird. The music is incredible. You can find it online. You will not find it anywhere [else]. I can just imagine what this must have felt like in 1979 when the film came out. Suspiria, that’s another one. It’s just like, how weird was that thing?
What is your favorite blockbuster that you did not compose? Ben-Hur. I’ve seen that one at least 20 times.
What’s your all-time comfort re-watch? The movie I’ve seen the most is Blade Runner. It’s just, like, it’s a nice world you’re stepping into, that fantasy. It’s not necessarily because I have memories [of] that movie that brings me back to a certain time period, it’s not that. It’s just that I just love to dwell in it. It feels a little bit like coming home. You can use it as comfort food, you can use it as, “I’m not feeling anything today”, or the opposite. You feel very great and you feel very inspired and it’s like, “Oh, let’s go home and watch that movie again.”
Terrence Malick’s ‘The Thin Red Line’ (1998).
Hans Zimmer has been an important mentor to you. Do you have a favorite of his scores? Yes, The Thin Red Line. It’s also the filmmaking of Terrence Malick—he forces a composer to think a certain way. He would always say, “It’s too much, make it less, make it smaller, make it this, make it that.” So, A, it’s a very good movie and B, he got Hans into the right place and Hans just over-delivered by doing exactly the right things at the right time and then shining just because of that.
Who is a composer that you have your eye on and what is one of their films that we should watch next? It’s so sad to say, but I mean, let’s call it like a retrospective discovery if you will. I’m so sad that we lost Jóhann Jóhannsson. He was a composer I felt really close to. We started roughly in the same time period making our way in today’s world. Also, Jóhann came from an artist background, even though it was a modern classical background. He made really great records, great experimentation with electronic elements, with classical instruments, and the mix between the two of them—very original way of looking at music. With Denis Villeneuve as his partner in crime the movies that they did were just mind-boggling good, whether it was Sicario or Arrival or Prisoners, and his voice will truly be missed among film composers. So people that are not super familiar with his work, I would definitely check it out.
‘Turks Fruit’ (Turkish Delight, 1973).
What is a must-see Dutch film that we should add to our watchlists? Holland has small cinema, but it has a really rich cinema and a very serious cinema culture. Usually because there’s not enough work in film, people are serious stage performers but then they also act in movies so they understand both really well. And we’ve delivered. There’s a string of actors that make their way to Hollywood or star in well-known series, whether it’s like Game of Thrones, or what we just talked about, Blade Runner. Many directors like Paul Verhoeven, Jan de Bont, the cameraman.
And so a movie that I’d like to pick is an old movie, called Turks Fruit (Turkish Delight) from the 1970s. Rutger Hauer is a younger guy, like, this completely irresponsible guy that starts this relationship with a really beautiful young girl, and they do all these crazy things, they do a lot of drugs and they have a lot of sex. He’s just like a bad influence on her.
Then he finds out she [has] cancer and it’s terminal. And to see him deal with that, and to see him want a change, but also in that change he does a lot of bad stuff at the same time… It was a sensational movie when it came out. And it actually was directed by Paul Verhoeven, one of his earlier films. When you see it, you’re just like, ‘Why am I watching this?’ for the first 45 minutes and then it starts and it’s like, ‘whoa’. So it’s really good, even in retrospect.
Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta in ‘Grease’ (1978).
What is the sexiest film you’ve ever seen? When I was super young, it was definitely Grease, with Olivia Newton-John, when she was in her catsuit at the very end of it. I had her picture on my bedroom, above my bed sideways because I was only like ten years old or something. I was so in love with Olivia Newton-John. It wasn’t the film per se, it was her. Yeah, I find, personally, movies from the ’70s to be more sexy, but it has something to do with the super-loose way that people were dressed and people were behaving.
And the other one was later in life: Basic Instinct. Sharon Stone. I’m not talking about like the famous shot, right, where she crosses her legs. I’m not talking about that, but the way that she acts throughout the whole movie. It’s insane. It’s really great.
Are there any films that have scared you? Like, truly terrified you? Yeah, I’m not a big fan because I get sucked up too much in it. The found [footage] horror movies like Paranormal Activity and things like the Japanese version of The Grudge, I cannot watch that stuff. That gets me too much. Because when I watch a film, I cannot watch it with one eye half open, the other one closed, like, ‘Okay, kind of cool, interesting’. I just get sucked into it.
Is there a film that has made you cry like no other? Oh yeah. Multiple. Once Upon a Time in America. The Godfather. Hable con Ella (Talk to Her). Betty Blue.
Thomas Holkenborg, AKA Junkie XL.
These are the films that make you weep? Not like on a regular basis, but I remember those were the ones that I really got hit. I’m talking particularly about the third Godfather. That whole end scene when they get out of the church and then… It’s really well-acted. So many Godfather fans that were dismissive of the film when it came out, in retrospect, ten, fifteen, 20 years later, are like, ‘it’s a really good film’. And I actually think so.
Final question. Is there a film from the past year that you would recommend, that you’ve loved? [Long pause.] The thing is that I watch pretty much a movie a day. So, that’s like three to four hundred movies. It [has] happened so often that I watch a film and then I’m just like an hour and 45 minutes in, it’s like, ‘wait, fuck, I’ve seen this thing before’.
So, we have an app for that… [Laughs.]

What Senate Committee Deals With Slot Machines 2020
House panel approves gambling deal, Senate plan on hold. Tribe, do away with greyhound racing while allowing dog tracks to keep operating other games, and open the door for slot machines in Palm Beach County. But a Senate committee, expected to vote on its version of the gambling legislation, postponed consideration of the.
A House panel on Tuesday overwhelmingly supported a trio of gambling bills that would ratify a $3 billion deal between the state and the Seminole Tribe, do away with greyhound racing while allowing dog tracks to keep operating other games, and open the door for slot machines in Palm Beach County.
But a Senate committee, expected to vote on its version of the gambling legislation, postponed consideration of the measures after Sen. Joe Negron filed a series of amendments that would dramatically change the proposal, months in the making.
Senate Regulated Industries Chairman Rob Bradley said he decided to delay discussion of the gambling bills (SB 7072, SB 7074) for a week to give the panel more time to “digest” Negron’s complicated proposal.
“I received requests from committee members to have some time to review those amendments without feeling rushed. This is an issue that is complex and large enough that it’s a reasonable request,” Bradley, R-Fleming Island, told reporters Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the House Regulatory Affairs Committee approved three gambling measures. One (PCB RAC 16-01) would ratify an agreement, called a “compact,” inked by Gov. Rick Scott and Seminole tribal leader James Billie in December. The compact would allow the Seminoles to add craps and roulette to their casino operations in exchange for a guarantee of $3 billion in payments to the state over seven years.
A second measure (PCB RAC 16-02) would allow greyhound tracks to do away with dog racing while keeping other pari-mutuel activities such as poker and slots, a process known as “decoupling.” The bill, amended to include the compact, would also decouple harness and quarter-horse races but would keep thoroughbred racing at Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs.
The proposal would also allow slots in Palm Beach County and at a new facility in Miami-Dade County.
The committee also approved a proposed constitutional amendment (PCB RAC 16-03), which would let voters decide whether they want to expand gambling in the future — after the compact and the other gambling changes go into effect.
House Regulatory Affairs Chairman Jose Felix Diaz said he decided to go ahead with the vote on the House’s gambling legislation after Bradley told him he was going to delay the vote on the Senate’s bills.
With the legislative session reaching the halfway point Wednesday, the Senate panel’s delay could make ratification of the compact problematic.
“We’re in week five, so every week that we don’t have a bill is a week closer to the bill dying,” Diaz, R-Miami, said. “It could very easily be one of those bills that we’re deciding at the very last moment. It just sort of looks and smells like it.”
But both Bradley and Diaz said that there is “plenty of time” for the Legislature to finalize a deal before the session ends on March 11.
“All the same challenges that existed six months ago, one month ago, one week ago, still exist today,” Bradley said.
Negron’s proposals, if passed, would significantly alter the agreement worked out by Scott’s general counsel, Tim Cerio, in tandem with Bradley and Diaz, who negotiated with the tribe for months before reaching an accord in December.
One of Negron’s amendments would allow slots at pari-mutuels in each of six counties — including Palm Beach — where voters have approved them, and in other counties where voters sign off on them in the future.
His plan would also decouple all dog and horse racing along with jai alai games, but allow the pari-mutuels to keep operating cardrooms and slot machines.
His proposal also includes $45 million — $20 million from the compact, and $25 million from revenues from slots and card games at pari-mutuels that discontinue racing or jai alai games — for thoroughbred purse pools.
And, in an effort to offset the expansion of gambling with the additional slot machines, Negron’s plan would eliminate 20 dormant or inactive pari-mutuel permits, while spending $20 million for the state to purchase active permits.
What Senate Committee Deals With Slot Machines Jackpots
Negron also wants the gambling measure to include language that would confirm that “fantasy sports” are legal in Florida, the subject of a separate bill he is backing.
Diaz said he believed he had the 61 votes necessary to pass out of the House the measure approved by his committee Tuesday, but he acknowledged that the bill is “an absolute work in progress.”
“Every shift in this bill can lose a vote and gain a vote. I’ll know at the very end where we stand,” he said. “I’m optimistic that we have a bill we can pass … but I’m not going to OK a bill that’s bad just because the money’s good.”
But Negron, a Stuart Republican who will take over as Senate president after the November elections, said he believed his proposed changes would make it easier to garner support from the upper chamber.
“I think everyone understood that (the compact) was a first draft for the Legislature to consider,” Negron said. “Without addressing the issues in my amendment, there are not enough votes to pass the compact in the Senate. My amendment actually increases the likelihood of the bill passing.”

Have a friends survey, because I’m really missing mine.
-- List 8 Friends of Either Gender --
1. Andrew 2. Jo 3. Aya 4. Gabie 5. Hannah 6. Angela 7. Laurice 8. Aliyah
Questions About These Friends
Does number 4 have a driver’s license? Yeah. I’m pretty sure we were part of the first few people in our high school batch who learned how to drive and get our licenses.
Can number 7 speak another language? Well yeah, she can speak Filipino. Everyone on the list can at least speak Filipino.
Does 2 know your parents well? Not so much. She knows the basic stuff about my parents that I tell everyone, like how my dad works abroad.
Have 3 and 5 been in the same room together? Multiple times, until Aya graduated. All three of us were in the same applicant batch in our org so we spent a loooot of time together.
Does 1 have similar music tastes to you? Broadly, yeah. I know we both like R&B and hip-hop but he’s faaaar more passionate about the genre and he’s a lot better at picking out artists and songs.
Has 6 ever stayed at your house? She’s visited a handful of times, but I prefer going to her house instead. I don’t really have a lot to offer here whereas we never run out of things to do at her place.
When did 3 last text you? If we are talking of strictly texts, November 2018. Aya was never a good replier on text lol. But my last notification of her in general was at 4 AM today, when she sent a meme to our friends’ group chat.
Does 5 have any pets? If so, what do they have? Nope. WELP I don’t know actually. She lives all the way in Bacolod so her home life doesn’t get raised much. I know she loves dogs though.
Does 7 live in the same town/city as you? Nah, she’s a south baby through and through.
Have you ever lent something important to 8? I’ve never even met her yet. We keep planning to especially since she works in Metro Manila now, but our schedules just never work out.
Can number 1 sing well? Yes. He’s done a lot of singing gigs and as far as I know he even put out an EP at one point. He has a sick stage name too.
Does 2 have any siblings? Nah, she’s an only child.
If 4 called you at 2 AM, what would your reaction be? Take it and assume she has trouble falling asleep.
Who is 8′s best friend? I’m not sure; I don’t know her all that well. I would assume it’s someone all the way in Mindanao, since that’s where she grew up and went to school and her whole life is there - she really only moved to Metro Manila for work. That’s why I feel for her sometimes and keep offering to meet up, so she can feel less lonely.
Does 6 have a favourite tv show? If so, what is it? She loooves watching TV series but I never knew what her favorite is. Good question, I’ll have to ask her this soon.
Who out of 5 and 7 knows you the best? I say they both know me on the same level but I think Laurice does slightly more. We’ve had deeper conversations, so it’s a safe guess.
Does 4 have a boyfriend/girlfriend? You are reading her answers right now. ;)
Does 2 have a career/knows what they want to be? Yes, she’s always wanted to be a journalist. She’s entering her senior year now and I’m really proud and super impressed with her for being able to keep up such a demanding, brutal passion; I was burned out from journ by freshman year. She even helps run a fact-checking website now :) It had just been a requirement in her class to come up with a fact-checking website but theirs got SO successful, racked up some awards, and now it’s still going.
Have you ever kissed 1? No. He’s like a brother to me and that just sounds like the weirdest scenario.
Does 3 have or want children? Yes. I know she wanted them when she was with Jo, but I’m not sure if she’s changed her mind lately.
Does 6 have any piercings or tattoos? Yep, on her ears.
Do your parents know 8? No. She’s an internet friend, so I never get to raise it in conversations. And I doubt they’ll be happy if they found out I made a friend on the interwebs anyway.
Which Number...
Have you had romantic feelings for? 4.
Have you told a secret to? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,7, 8. I’m pretty open with my secrets, as dumb as that sounds lol
Have you shared a bed with? 2, 3, 4, 6, 7.
Have you watched a movie with? I remember watching The Devil Wears Prada with 2 and 3. I’ve watched several movies with 4.
Have you seen cry? 2, 3, 4, 6.
Have seen you cry? 1, 4, 5. 5 hasn’t seen me cry but she has definitely heard me.
Have cooked you something? 6 and 7 :) They’re also the biggest mom friends on the list, so I’m not surprised.
Have a boyfriend/girlfriend? 1, 4, 6. I’m not sure if 2 and 3 are still together; we never get to update each other anymore. Have met your parents? 2, 3, 7 from a meeting we once held at my house. And 4 and 6, of course - they’re my mom’s favorites.
Have been to the same school/college as you? Everyone except 8.
About Number One What age are they? He turned 22 in June.
Have you met their parents? Never. He can’t give less of a shit about his dad so I don’t care for him, though. I know he’s super protective of his mom.
Have you ever been in a relationship with them? Not at all. He wouldn’t be my type, and like I said he’s a brother to me more than anything else.
Do they like most of your other friends? We mostly have mutual friends, so. I know he likes my best frieinds though - he was even the one who reminded me about putting Angela on my thesis acknowledgments.
How often do you two meet up and/or talk? Back in school we used to see each other around 1-2 days a week. He’s a little busier than I am since he takes side gigs, so he’s not in campus all the time.
When did you last argue? We’ve never fought but the last time I got quite upset with him was last December. We were rushing to get our thesis draft submitted on time and apparently he submitted the file to our professor’s VIBER. He for sure got an earful from me that day.
What is their favourite food? I’m not sure. He does tend to have unpopular food opinions so I wouldn’t be surprised if his favorite is not a common choice.
Where is their favourite place to be? On the basketball court or anywhere with Leigh, I’m guessing.
How many close friends do they have? I know of at least two - JM and Blanch. He is friendly and has an extensive circle though, so I’m sure I’m missing several other close friends of his.
Number Two What colour are their eyes? Dark brown.
Have they known you the longest? Not at all. I’ve only known her for three years.
Where were they born? I’m guessing it would either be Manila or Makati.
Why are they your number 2? She just fell on the second slot. I was trying to randomize my friends’ names and hers just turned out to be the second one I thought of.
Do they like children? I don’t know how she feels about them exactly but one thing I know is that she doesn’t hate kids, and we’ve had numerous conversations on what we’d do in certain scenarios involving kids.
Would they beat you in a race? I think so. But then again I did track at one point, so I’m walking onto that contest already with an advantage.
When did you last spend time alone together? Ugh c’mon man, this question is just sad. Jo had been hanging out at Skywalk less and less ever since most of the people in our friend group graduated last school year, so our last real hangout was probably that time we slept over at Laurice’s in June 2019. We never hung out a lot after that, and of course the lockdown just killed any chances we had of doing so.
Do they have a pet peeve? What is it? She has a lot of pet peeves but I can’t place any of them at the moment.
Number Three What is their hair colour? Black, as do most Filipinos.
What is their job, if they have one? Last I heard she got a gig with a major broadcasting network. I think she’s a segment producer? Segment researcher? Something of the sort.
Do they have their own place? I don’t think so; not just yet.
How many brothers or sisters do they have? I know she has a sister. I’ve forgotten if she has a brother.
Have you ever done something illegal with them? Yes hahaha illegal in university terms, at least. When we had free time and we saw that no one was using one of the classrooms in the college, our friend group snuck inside and played The Devil Wears Prada on the projector. As the only goody-two-shoes in the group I was super uneasy the whole time, but literally no faculty or staff checked in on us for the entire film. That was the moment I knew I was no longer in private school, where everyone watched you like a hawk lol.
How old were you when you met each other? I was 19, she was 21.
Are they more sporty, arty or academic? ARTSY. She’s one of the best artists I’ve ever seen and she can absolutely fucking slay any editorial cartoon.
Have you ever travelled out of country with this person? Nope. I would love to.
Person Four Do they have a favourite musician? St. Vincent’s been her fave for the longest time.
Have you drank alcohol with this person? Many times. When I drink she’s usually around.
Are their parents together? Yes.
What do you enjoy doing with them? EATING OUT!!! I also love going to new places and museum strolling with her, but yeah nothing works for me better than food with my favorite person.
When is their birthday? June 5th.
Do they have long or short hair? Long.
Have you been to a concert with this person? Yes, when we went to (illegally) see Coldplay from the top of a parking lot. Still felt like we were part of the concert grounds though.
If you asked them to describe you, what do you think they would say? Determined, hates to lose, and annoyingly generous.
Person Five Where did you two meet? I met Hannah on our enrollment day for our sophomore year in college. She and Macy had transferred from UPLB to UPD and since Macy and I were already friends from high school, she introduced me to Hannah. Then we became a lot closer when it turned out we were both applying for the same org.
How long ago did they phone you? We both hate phone calls and we’d hate to call/be called.
Do they have a certain sport they play? I don’t think she’s very athletic herself, but she loves watching UAAP games and she has a particular affinity for volleyball.
What about them annoys you sometimes? I never found her annoying. I did notice that her one weakness as a co-worker is her fear of being assertive, putting her foot down, being confident to come up with her own steps on how to come up with steps towards a situation, that kind of stuff. She often wanted someone who she felt like was more knowledgeable to be by her side and make all the decisions. But I did see her bloom a bit after a few months, so I’m proud of the progress.
Are they ruled by their head or their heart? Heart.
Are they male or female? Female.
In what ways are they the opposite of you? She’s religious and she loves to sing and perform.
How many rooms do they have in their house? No clue; I’ve never been to her house. I’ve never even been to her city.
Person Six Can they play an instrument? I think she knows *a bit* of guitar. But she’s not crazy gifted when it comes to musical instruments, I know that much.
Are they close with their mother? VERY. And she has no reason not to be - her mom is the nicest and most compassionate person I’ve ever met. Always treated me like family.
Do you know any of their siblings well? She’s an only child.
How many times have you visited their house? Countless, especially in high school and in our first few years in college.
When did you last go out to eat together? Feb. It was one of the food stalls at The Palace and we needed to eat away all the alcohol lol.
Do they own a bike? I haven’t seen one in her place so I’m assuming no. Her neighborhood is not very bike-friendly to begin with, so it’s understandable.
Do they have a sweet, sour or salty tooth? She has a...green tooth? Hahahaha she likes eating healthily.
What music genre do they listen to most? Pop, pop rock, indie, indie rock.
Person Seven Would you ever consider dating this person? Probably not. She’s SO stable and happy; I’m still working on it. I wouldn’t want to dump my shit on her vibrant and bubbly outlook on life.
Do they prefer cats or dogs? Dog, I think. I don’t know for sure though.
Are they or do they plan to go to college? To study what? Yes, she’s in her senior year now. She’s also taking up journalism – it’s how we met.
If they did something illegal, what would it be? I highly doubt that would ever happen lmao, she’s super nice and such a goody-two-shoes. If she got caught doing something illegal it’s 100% only because she was with someone who did the thing.
Have you ever shared a sundae with this person? Maybe once or twice.
is their hair dyed or natural? It’s all black now, but at one point she dyed it light brown.
Is this person sarcastic? She can be, especially with people she’s close to.
Is this person more likely to party or sit in and read a book? SIT IN AND READ A BOOK. Literally the most accurate option.
Person Eight Have you ever lied to this person? I probably have. We’ve only ever talked on social media, where it’s a lot easier to tell a tiny lie and get away with it.
Do you know where this person was born? Somewhere in Davao I’m assuming.
Do you know their middle name and do they know yours? We know each others’ second names because have them put out on Facebook; but not our middle names.
Do they have any special talents? If she does, I don’t know about them. She’s amazing at writing though.
What is their starsign? Whatever star sign falls on the first half of December.
What is the first thing you notice about this person? Ever since the time she tweeted that she doesn’t like smiling with her teeth, her smile has always been the first thing I’m drawn to.
Have you ever had a big row with this person? Never.
Do you like the same types of movies as this person? Not really. We met because she was friends with my friends who liked the same things she did, but when it comes to us we couldn’t really be any more different.
Random Stuff
Which of these friends would you say you are the closest to? Gabie, of course.
Can you remember all of their birthdays? I’ll give it a shot. June 22, December 31, December 5, June 5, January 16, September 15, May 23...and Aliyah’s is in early December, I’m certain.
Is there anything you regret saying to any of them? I guess only towards Gab, because I’m closest with her and we’ve been through the most together.
Which one of these has been there for you the most? Angela.
Which one have you known the longest and the shortest amount of time? I’ve been aware of Gabie the longest (18 years); been friends with Angela the longest (15 years); and been friends with Andrew the shortest (about a year and a half).
If you needed a laugh, you'd call... I wouldn’t call my friends if I needed help...but if I needed a laugh I’d turn to Anj or Andrew.
If you needed advice, you'd call... Mmm I’d pick among Andrew, Aya, Gabie, Angela, and Laurice.
Which one does your parents like the most? ANGELAAAAAAAA. She’s That friend that I can name-drop when I’m asking for permission to go out, and once my mom hears that she’s going to be with me she usually won’t hesitate to say yes haha.
Is there any of these your parents dislike? They don’t dislike any of them but I have a feeling they’ll disapprove of the fact that I made an online friend in Aliyah, especially my mom.
Do any of them share the same initials? Andrew and Aliyah do.
You can invite one with you for a once in a lifetime trip, which one? Angela.
Something you'd like to say to one of them: I miss you. That applies to everyone.
