In the remote Scottish hamlet of Sunnyville, some of the residents have been attempting to erect their Christmas decorations.

Sunnyville – originally known as Achmothogair but renamed in the mid-1930s by an absentee English landlord of unbounded optimism, who had visions of constructing a model village on his newly acquired land then succumbed to the gout before the project was half begun – includes among its few remaining habitable structures the dilapidated studios of Novelties and Notions, which serve as their operational headquarters, so far as that is possible…

In the tiny Scottish hamlet of Sunnyville (more properly known as Achmothogair) Christmas is celebrated in a traditional way, for time moves slowly in remote rural areas and most of the few remaining residents have left their youth far behind, so they tend to indulge in nostalgia. The days of mid-winter are short and dim at this extreme northerly latitude, and made even darker by almost unbroken cloud cover; life in Sunnyville during the festivities is therefore spent mainly indoors, centred around hearth and home, and illuminated by such artificial means as they can muster.
