How To [Actually] Write a Combat Medic

…according to combat medics and those who know them - Part 1/?

I’ve learned that the best way to get inspiration for characters in certain careers is to find firsthand accounts from people within those careers.

So, in researching for Pharma and Flatline, I found some combat medic skits on YouTube, and I am LOSING MY MIND at some of these comments:

Of course, not all medics are like this, and these commenters only represent a small part of the combat medic population…but I’m rolling with it because, at least in Pharma’s case, one of my goals has always been to keep a little bit of the Unhinged around.

It’s nice to know I can back that writing choice with reality. lol

This is Nova, formerly SSCE11324-GA001. They were the last in a series of experiments attempting to make a Sonic clone called Project Supernova. May make a separate full lore post. They'd meet the Sonic main characters at age 7, wherein they get freed from Robotnik's lab. Sonic and Shadow would be in their early 20s at that point.

Q: I was actually gonna ask you, now that you’re the reigning MVP, you used to have to go over to Sid’s gym all summer long. It was the older one, you spent all this money for the new upgraded one. Now that you’re the MVP does he have to come train with you? How does that work?

A: No, no, it doesn’t work like that *laughs* (You’re still getting bullied?) Oh yeah. Still going to his gym. All good. He’s 20 years in the league, so… Yeah. I train with Batheson so I make him come to my gym. He makes me feel better about myself, so… that’s what I do.

Q: What did you say to Sid when he took 8.7, did you know that was coming?

A: Yeah, I mean *laughs* I remember, like, in July I was like, man, you’re not gonna sing for 8.7. Like c’mon. He’s like, ah, I don’t know, we’ll see. It’s so cool though, the legacy he’s leaving. How much money is left on the table and his desire to still win. He’s still taking less to try and get somebody else this year and next year.

Q: As somebody who’s always looked up to him, he’s 37 now, he’s still doing it. That’s gotta not only amaze you but also kinda inspire you a little bit. Does that surprise you that he’s still doing it or not at all, knowing him?

A: Man, you should see this guy in the summer. My workouts are like a joke. The recovery summers I do, and he is just grinding. He just grinds. He loves it, I think. I think it’s also awesome, not that he wouldn’t be motivated having this Four Nations thing, and then the Olympics. So no matter what happens, he’s got two things to look forward to and be dialled in for and I think being the captain of Canada, I can’t imagine the pressure to be at your best. He’s ready. He looks amazing, All the guys on the ice, it’s amazing he’s 37. He doesn’t look 37.  (Because he doesn’t have kids!) *laughs* Must be the key.

Q: Did you actually have a cereal released in 2021 called MacKinnon Crunch?

A: I did. Frosted flakes. I picked the flavour though, I liked that. (Was that right before you got your deal with Tim Hortons, became a server at their restaurant?) That was 2015. (Do they have you do that same thing every summer?) We haven’t done that since then. We’ve always wanted to do one where we get Marchy in there just because we’re Nova Scotians, and he’s being a rat and messing up people’s orders, and we gotta like sit him down and tell him what to do. They haven’t done that yet. Marchy needs to be nicer on the ice to be more marketable.

Q: Would that be your dream line for the Four Nations? Yourself, Sid and Marchand?

A: That would be cool. (You’d play the wing?) Oh yeah. Yeah, I’m ready for the wing. Definitely. McDavid, Sid, one-two punch. And then everyone kinda figures it out. (In a room like that you’d essentially delegate to McDavid?) You’re not putting McDavid on the wing, that’s crazy! I don’t mind right wing, I’ve played wing, I’m comfortable there and I don’t know if those two have ever played wing. I’m sure they could easily figure it out. They’re two of the smartest players ever. But I think to have those two guys a one-two punch and then if I’m third line centre that’s cool, if I’m playing on McDavid’s right.

Should I tell Sid to go to the wing, do you think? (“I’ve been working at your gym all these years. I’m the Ted Lindsay winner and the MVP. I gotta get something out of this relationship.”) Yeah, I think he could be 50 and I’d still slide over. No problem. Being on a Nova Scotia line it would be really cool. I think we’d work well together too. The way Marchy plays he’s just gonna muck, forecheck, and then Sid’s Sid, and I can try to push the pace.

Q: You said you went to Europe this summer…

A: It’s just relaxing. Just get off the grid. I was definitely tempted to go to Worlds last year. Sid was bugging me and Schenner bout it. (Saying what, if you go, I’ll go?) Yeah. So we were all gonna go, but then I was just like man, I just played 105 games, just lost to Dallas. At this point I feel like I’m all in or it’s hard to go over there and like (Skate around and giggle.) It’s just tough.

Q: You skated in the summer with Marner, how’s he looking?

A: He looks awesome. You hear stuff that’s always negative, a lot of the time it’s negative and then you get on the ice with him and you’re like, how can anyone ever be negative about this? That’s why I think for me, I just admire how good he is because people chirp him a lot. Up in Vail he was sick. Him and McDavid were flying around together. It was so fun to watch.

I used to like going to Popeye’s Supplements as a kid with my dad and looking at protein powder and stuff. I don’t know. I’m just into it.

Q: We heard so much about you policing the food in the locker room. Are you still doing that? Are you still going on there, like no sugars, no sweets. Whit said you strangled Lehkonen because he ate a Snickers bar or something. Is that true?

A: Nawww, stop it. That’s not true *laughs* I’m trying to mellow a little bit for sure. I definitely see some shit and I get mad but I try to keep it to myself. I don’t know, you eat what you want but I just think when you’re at the rink, we’re the NHL, you’re a pro athlete, I think it should be healthy and good food. I just think the least you can do as a pro athlete is be in good shape.

Feelings and Faults (Wolverine)

Requests: Hi I was just wondering if you could write wolverine x reader smut where he is in love/obsessed with her and she has feelings for him but doesn’t acknowledge it because she doesn’t think she deserves to be loved which could be down to past trauma (it’s up to you) but then they confess their feelings inspired by the scene in the Honda Odyssey just without deadpool please it’s okay if not

Author’s note: I didn’t see the smut part until I went to post so that’s not part of the story. But I hope you like it!

She sat in the Honda Odyssey with a drink in her hand. She never really was one for drinking but times like these it was needed. Everyone was either inside planning the attack on Nova or by the fire drinking. She was in the car, alone in thought. Not realizing that she had someone that could never look away from her.

Someone that loved her and wanted to be with her even though she had fault in that. After losing Erik she never felt like she could be loved again or deserved it. But Logan adored her and wanted her forever. In his universe Y/N and Magneto were the happy couple that he let get killed. He always adored her but could never have her.

Now, she didn’t have Magneto in her life anymore and he wanted to be the one to fill the void. He could tell that she beat herself up over it and the blame was on her. Whatever happened between them, he would never believe that she was fully the one to blame. She deserved love and happiness, even if she couldn’t see it.

After his talk with Laura he walked over to the car that he knew she was in and got in the driver side. She looked over at him and saw a bottle of whiskey in his hand and smirked. He was definitely one for drinking. But she couldn’t blame him. “How did I know that you were in here?” He asked and she shrugged. “Despite what Wade says, I think the Honda Odyssey fucks hard.” She said and that made him chuckle.

Wade hated this car but Y/N liked it. “I also didn’t take you for drinking.” She smiled at him and held up the drink, “Cheers to that. I never was a drinker but after things go south it’s nice to have one.” He watched as she chugged the rest of her drink and held out her cup to fill it up. He gladly poured her another glass. “So about the fight earlier-” “Don’t mention it. He’s fine.” “I’m talking about you. Us.” She looked over at him, “What’s there to talk about? You’re right. I beat myself up over a guy that probably never gave a shit about me.” He felt guilt for saying that to her. “In my universe, you guys were married. Had kids even. You two were in love.” She rolled her eyes, “And let me guess we died?” He nodded and cleared his throat, “Yeah. It was awful. I constantly think back to that night and it haunts me.” “It was probably meant to be.” He looked at her, “What do you mean?” “I’m not meant to be happy in any universe.” He wanted to roll his eyes at her and her stupidity but he kept going, “No. That’s me. You sit here and act like nobody loves you and you’re alone but that is fair from the truth.” She looked at him as he finished off the bottle.

“Y/N, In my universe I was in love with you. I wanted you so bad but Erik beat me to it.” Her eyes widened in shock. His words repeating in her head. “The first second I met you I felt it all come back. Only this time Erik isn’t in the way. It’s you.” She chugged her drink before she could get out the words, “What?” It wasn’t a question of her asking him to repeat what he said or that she couldn’t hear him. She simply could not believe the words that left his mouth.

“Don’t act like nobody loves you and doesn’t care about you. I do! And I always will.” She stared at him with wide eyes. Sure, she had some feelings for him but she beat herself up after what happened with Erik. “You’re drunk.” She stated and he laughed. “Unbelievable. I pour my heart out to you and you tell me I’m drunk?” She didn’t know what to say to him at this time. “Y/N, Erik was a fucking idiot for not loving you and trying with you. You’re amazing and beautiful and only a dumb fuck like him wouldn’t see that.” Her eyes filled with tears, “You can’t mean that.” She whispers and he sighs, “Well I do. And if Wade wasn’t there earlier than maybe this would have come out sooner.” She turned away from him and sighed.

This couldn’t be real. There was no way he was telling the truth. Was he? She looked up at the top of the car, “The Magneto that Cassandra killed, that was mine.” He turned to look at her, “The TVA had got him before I could save him. I feel like the biggest fuck up about it. It wasn’t that he didn’t love me or wanted to be with me. It was never known but we had something special.

That’s why I was so nervous about coming here. I was so scared that he wouldn’t want anything to do with me and hated me but he’s dead. That’s worse than him hating me.” She was pouring her heart out to him. “I want to believe you, Logan. But I don’t know. After seeing you and you helping us I realized that maybe Erik wasn’t the one for me and that I could have another chance at happiness.”

“You can. I’m right here.” She turned to look at him to find that he was already looking at her. Maybe it was the heat of the moment but she really wanted to kiss him. As if he was Charles Xavier and could read her mind, he leaned in and kissed her. She kissed back and maybe it was the drink or the kiss but she felt herself calm down and realize that this was meant to be. “Erik wasn’t your fault sweetheart. You are not at fault for that. You deserve love and all the happy things in love.” She felt herself smile at his words. “Thank you, Logan.” she whispered and he smiled. “No problem, sweetheart.” He said before they locked lips again.

gonna ramble about worldbuilding

I've been refining old concept art of the city of my story, Spiro and Nova, (because it sits in my head always and never truly leaves.) The sunflower skyrise is a giant, flower-like skyscraper that is supposed to open and peel back to protect the city beneath it from frequent, violent storms. In the setting of the story, it has been fixed in its closed position for several years.

(I am driven a little insane by how rapidly our climate crisis has increased since 2018 when I first started thinking about this story.)

I am not a true crime girlie, but I am a horrible history girlie. I listen to a lot of construction tragedy stories and I feel angry because they're all caused by corporate greed and negligence. I also read a lot about architectural greenwashing, when a building is marketed as eco-friendly and has all the stylings of a solarpunk utopia, but is really environmentally hazardous and costly to maintain/destroy.

I'll be real, my inspirations for the city are Power Rangers RPM and Attack on Titan. As a kid, they made me ask a lot of questions about urban design: What happens when your livelihood is dependent on a single, declining structure? What happens when that structure fails to work as intended? Who is hurt by this? Who benefits?

I live in a major city that is actively destroying the very forest that it is iconic for. I've been writing about that a lot as a journalist this past year. That experience (and the pandemmy) has made this idea not yet story hit too close to home sometimes. But at the same time, that's why I don't want to let it go.

Oooh this is interesting!! Alright lemme see what I got...

Cemetery Mary: I think Mary came out especially cute! Though, maybe that's just my favoritism showing...but her little peterpan-collared dress and her ball-joint tights! The look is simple but I think it compliments her well and keeps her design from being too busy! ♡

Tricks N Treats: I think Sunny's costume came out very adorable and I'm happy with the end result! I just think it came out so cute! I also enjoyed putting Embry in the astronaut costume, I love the idea of them using their helmet as a candy bucket hehe

Holiday Shopping: There's only like 3 characters really but I like how Twyla's winter look came out! It just feels cozy and fits her well.

It's Not Me It's My Basement: I have always been very proud of Embry's design and I'm happy that others like it too! I like how I captured the sort of "messy kid morute-lite" vibe (im just saying words at this point arent i)

Here For Sweethearts: This one is fun because so many characters got different designs for it! For my favorites I'd have to say Netina, Mary, and Zapara. Netina looks like a clean and popular student, Mary looks so cozy and cute, and Zapara looks like an accurate representation of her kind of girl! Oh! And also Fem!Nova, I just adore the big pigtails ♡

Crowscare: I have to say I'm very happy with how Venna came out!! She captured the vibes I wanted for her perfectly, and I loved getting to have a character in a big ball gown and eye mask!

Blackout Hospital: A tough one because there's so many characters! I have to say I like Vasilis in their jumpsuit, as simple as it is. I like Mary's design but I think it's mostly for the nostalgia of it all, haha. I think Griindel's design is really fun, and I love the outfit I gave to Ollie even if it doesn't show off their turtle-ish-ness so well! OH! And I like Lucky, I think he's simple but cute!

Semiaquatic Circus: I like Capella a lot, including her special end-scene outfit! Pogo Gogo and Savannah are also designs I like a lot and had fun designing them ♡

Sweet No Death: Stella's design is one I'm most proud of, I just think everything about it comes together SO perfectly!! I'm also pretty proud of Ruuuby's design as I like how I incorporated everything into it, and I like how Lambchop came out a lot as he feels very self-indulgent to me!

Fia's Night Out: Again not many characters in this one! But I like to think the outfit I gave Fia is cute, and I do love Jaxter here as well!

My Neighbor Enide: I think Allie came out perfect! (Preferably her pre-timeskip outfit, but post-timeskip is fun too!) and I LOVE how I designed Enide's outfit for this game, I might even like it better than when I first designed her as a character! (Though I don't know if anyone's ever seen that here?)

MY WISHMAKER: I like Reginald's suit here, and it may in part be due to how it reminds me of Yuppie Psycho haha! I think Mary's outfit is also cute in this game ♡

One Girl's Trash: I am in LOVE with how Maggie, Zapper, and Opaisley look. I think Maggie and Opaisley really hit the nail of what I want to achieve when designing animal-inspired characters, and I think Zapper's design is just so different and fun compared to the kind of masculine fashion I usually lean towards (lots and lots of suits...)

I have gone far enough in the fandom hole that I have made an OC. Not any oc. We made a fankid.

My best friend @procrastinatingrockstar and I have given Sephiroth, Angeal and Genesis a child.

Her name is Jenova Hewley-Rapsodos because Sephiroth was allowed to named her. (Name is inspired from one of @altocat's post)

She's a cute kid with Sephiroth's sliver hair and more human looking hazel eyes. Most people call her Nova as a nickname.

Angeal, Genesis, and Sephiroth attempt to raise their baby together.

Like most things involving Sephiroth, Nova will eventually become Zack and Cloud's problem.

I warn you this is more of 'Add something to canon and shake' then a fix it au. This is a fun fluff post. I'll have an angst post later.

I hope Tommys able to regain his love of content creation someday. Not even bc I like his content I haven’t watched it in a lonnnnnng while, but because I Know what it’s like to lose love for stuff bc of weirdo adults ruining it for you and it SUCKS. It’s not fun! It doesn’t feel like moving on it feels like having things you love ripped from you and smashed into itty bitty pieces. It’s what happened with the Nova AU, actually! I haven’t talked about what happened there much, and this is probably a bit of a heavier read than usual, so sorry about that, but it’s important to me. Discussions of grooming and sexual exploitation below- NOT that I’m saying the same happened to TommyInnit, it’s about what happened to ME.

The Nova AU comes from concepts that existed since I was very little, but the last time I was super into it was when I was fourteen. I’d gotten super into Sonic again and a lot of the major concepts that'd become integral to the AU- Sonic's injury, Nova's experimentation with roboticisation, the themes of how child abuse even if done in different ways can have the same effects, even the fact it’s Metonic at all- were stuff I’d developed hanging out with friends.

It was also in those areas where I was pressured into sexual conversation, had people joke about masturbating to (entirely innocent) images of my, again, fourteen year old self (and I looked a LOT younger than fourteen), and during a game of truth and dare I was pressured into looking at Sonic pornography and describing my sexual fantasies and masturbation to a group of adults. I openly had a crush on Metal Sonic at the time, being a teenage furry, so it seemed like a funny joke, but it always made me feel really weird inside. I didn’t like looking for that stuff, it wasn’t something I wanted to think about. I made sex jokes, sure, but I was fourteen. I thought they were funny because I was a teenager. I didn’t think about this sort of stuff or wanted to do it. I found it kinda disgusting, actually, to think about in such a way. It was uncomfortable and it really stuck with me, and drained a lot of my love for that AU. It felt weird and tainted. It made me think of that stuff I didn’t like. I have the images burned in my brain, the exact ones I sent to get them to shut up about it. I couldn’t forget it if I tried. That, along with everything else, made me feel repulsed from ever exploring it in depth for several years. It broke my love of something that was a huge drive of my creativity.

And not exploring that? It didn’t make me happy, or make me feel relieved. I felt trapped. I had something I loved a lot, that was a very important part of my history in creating art and writing, no matter how silly or weird it might seem, but I had images and words burned into my head that made it hard to think about. Elements of it are absolutely visible in everything I’ve create, salvaged and repurposed, but I didn’t want to salvage it. I wanted to be able to get excited and draw and make up elaborate timelines. But I just. Couldn’t.

It’s been seven years since I was fourteen now. And I’ve finally been able to go back to my silly Sonic AU. And do you know what? Out of all the things I’ve done at twenty one, being able to do that has been one of the most joyful, freeing things. I’m able to explore the stuff I loved so much and that made me feel so inspired without thinking about being exploited and hurt anymore. I’ve been so enthusiastic about this AU for a reason- it’s not just something I’ve had for ages, but it’s something that was ruined to me up until it wasn’t. And that’s the most wonderful feeling, y’know? Being able to recover stuff and make it yours again.

Obviously, we have no evidence that what happened to Tommy was anywhere even close to that, and I don’t want it to seem like I am. Even far less serious stuff can ruin things for you for a long time. But I know how utterly agonising it is for things you love to be tainted by asshole adults as a kid, and how painful it is to have the pieces of something you once loved but being unable to fix it from a final painful memory. It’s awful. No one deserves that. The way he talked about content creation reminded me a lot of myself, but I have recently been able to return to what once was tainted to me, and it’s made me giddy with joy. I hope everyone who experienced that might do the same someday
